Introduction to India! India is a country that leaves one spellbound with its alluring contrasts and striking features in all that it beholds! India is a 34,000 years old country with a rich legend and history. One is sure to get intermingled with the plaited knots of customary and contemporary ingredients of India. Where else will you experience spirituality and solitude than in the mystic land of the lords! The rich rituals, distinct culture of India, festivals and ceremonies that India celebrates, unfold its legendary sagas. Ancient India was a country that covered the territories of Pakistan, Bangladesh apart from the territory of current India. Ancient Indian history can be broadly divided into three ages namely the Bronze Age, Indus valley civilization and the Vedic age. Religion in India is as diverse as its geography and culture. It comprises of world’s most ancient traditions and believes. In India, religion and culture play a very important role. Religion is an essential part of most Indians. Agriculture is not only the dominant occupations of the people of India but is also one of the most important economic sectors for the country. Almost two-thirds of the working population of India is dependent on agriculture for its livelihood. Indian economy is on the rise for the past few years with effects of globalization, privatization and liberalization being seen. India is a country that leaves one spellbound with its alluring contrasts and striking features in all that it beholds. Religion in India is as diverse as its geography and culture. It comprises of world’s most ancient traditions and beliefs. In India, religion and culture play a very important role. It’s truly remarkable how India has managed to remain united despite the presence of several unique religions. It shows the inherent strength of Indian civilization. Very few countries in the world can boast of such religious diversity and yet remain united. India is a country which is full of beautiful contrasts. It is also a land of rich rituals, fascinating festivals and mesmerising ceremonies. The geographical diversity of India makes it one of the most sought after tourist destinations.

INDORE Indore – Heart of central India


About Indore Indore is the commercial capital of the state Madhya Pradesh, and a major city in central India, Indore was the capital of former princely state of Holkars. Indore posses a diverse culture and a rich heritage, and its history date back more than 300 yrs. The nearby industrial hub Pithampur houses many leading industries such as Hindustan Motors, Eicher Motors, Bajaj, Nicholas Piramal, Bridgestone, Larsen & Toubro, and Gajra Gears etc. The electronics complex in the city also houses offices of some of the top IT companies in the country. Indore is biggest contributor of revenues to the Madhya Pradesh government. Indore is located in the western region of Madhya Pradesh, on the southern edge of the Malwa plateau, on the Saraswati and Khan rivers, which are tributaries of the Shipra River. Indore has an average elevation of 550 meter above sea level.

Culture Indore city has a variety of cultures. Over the years the city of Indore has welcomed people from all castes, creed and color. People from all corners of the country have migrated & settled in the heart of Madhya Pradesh for their livelihood, education or just for its peaceful culture. People here know to maintain harmony by intermixing and enjoying their life, irrespective of castes or region and by respecting every religion. A city with abundant social life, Indore was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for holding the largest tea party in the world.


Food Indore is famous for its culinary range and is known for its wide variety of Namkeens, Poha & Jalebi, Chaats (snacks), Kachoris and Samosas, cuisines of various types in different restaurants, and Bengali, Muslim, Rajasthani, continental and confectionery sweets, as well as exotic dishes such as Dal-Bafla, Nihari Gosht and BaflaGosht - a delicacy of Indore and Malwa Region.

Main Festivals All national festivals like Holi, Rangpanchmi, Baisakhi, Raksha Bandhan, Navratri,Dussehra, Ganeshotsav, Deepavali, Ramzan, Gudi Padwa, Bhaubeej, Eid and other others like Nagpanchmi, Ahilya Utsav, are celebrated with equal enthusiasm.

Climate Indore has a transitional climate between a tropical wet and dry climate and a humid subtropical climate. Three distinct seasons are observed: summer, monsoon and winter. Summers start in mid-March and can be quite hot in April and May. Due to Indore's location on the southern edge of the Malwa Plateau, a cool breeze in the evenings makes summer nights quite pleasant. The monsoon season starts in late June, with sustained, torrential rainfall and high humidity. Winters start in mid-November and are dry, mild and sunny.


Transport

Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport Airways: Indore is served by the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport. Indore airport is about 8 km from the city centre and currently handles only domestic traffic. The airport has been operating services by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways Konnect, Jet Lite, and Kingfisher Red. Indore has a direct connectivity to Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Raipur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune, Kolkata & Jabalpur,

Railways

Indore Main Railway Station There are many trains which are connected to the railways station of Indore. Trains form every part of India goes via Indore, so commuting via Indore to any place around India, is not a problem.


Road

Local City Bus The major bus terminals are Sarwate bus terminal, Gangwal bus terminal, Navlakha bus stand & Jinsi bus stand. India's first of its concept - GPS & IVR enabled city buses. Indore is well connected to other parts of India through national and state highways. There are some major highways which pass through Indore and connect it to some major cities. The major national highways passing through the city are:  

National Highway No. 3 (NH3 – Agra- Bombay) National Highway No. 59 (NH 59 - Indore-Ahmadabad)

Metro Taxi in Indore Indore has an efficient public transport system. There are 225 General Low Floor, 190 Semi-Low Floor and 90 AC Special City Bus being operated under this new service. The buses are color coded as per their route. For local transport, there are also the options of Auto rickshaw, Van and Local City Ride Buses called Nagar Seva. You can book a metro taxi by simply calling: (+91)-(731)-4288888


Visa & Registrations There is no separate VISA for a trainee coming to India on a student internship program through AIESEC. You are not eligible for a work permit either, as you are not going to be a permanent employee of the company. A tourist Visa does not allow you to do an internship in a company. We suggest that you ask for a Business Visa with a special endorsement that says Intern at company name e.g. Intern at CompuCom Software Ltd. OR Trainees at company name e.g. trainee at Maharaja Textiles The special endorsement is taken when the authorities write the words, mentioned above, on the Visa itself. • Fill up the Visa application form and in the purpose of visit column; write the wordsInternship/ traineeship at the company name through AIESEC. • Attach the company acceptance note and the formal letter of invitation from the company. We will send both these documents to you. • We suggest that you also get a letter from the Local Chapter in your country mentioning that you are a participant in the exchange program and that you will be working in India through this program for the specified duration. Also give a short description of AIESEC and the exchange program. The Local chapter in your country can give you this letter, so please ask for it. • Try and get to the consulate yourself so that you can make sure that you get the right Visa. If not, please make sure that you call the consulate. If you’re Visa does not have the special endorsement, please send it back to them and ask them to make the endorsement. • When you arrive in India, we will register you with the foreign office within 14 days of your arrival if your Visa is longer than 180 days. There will be scrutiny of your passport and Visa, so please be very careful and make sure that you have the right Visa before arrival. Also note that a company does not pay a salary but will give you a stipend in Indian Rupees that will cover your basic living expenses. It is in the form of a reimbursement. Please DO NOT mentions the word SALARY anywhere. The registration of any foreign national, residing more than 180 days is to be done within 20 days of his\her arrival into the country.


In Indore the registration is done at the office of Superintend of Indore Police, which is situated at the “Regal Square Indore�. An AIESEC member will be assisting you with the process.

Arrival and Registration Please make sure that you are in touch with the AIESEC in INDORE TN Manager and he or she has the exact details of your arrival. Once you arrive in India, please Give a call to the TN Manager and let him or her know about your plan as to when and how Are you going to arrive in the city? You will be received by a few of us, so ensure that we have your travel details with us before you leave. A few Aiesecers will definitely be there to receive you. So wait for them. They will take you to one of their houses for the first night, and then after showing you around the next morning, they will take you to your current accommodation. You will be visiting your company the next day or so with your trainee account manager. You must also fill your expectation form as soon as you are down, so that we can serve you better. Your trainee account manager will accompany you to your company the first day, and there you shall be given your detailed job description and also meet your co-workers.

FOOD

There are many small eateries and big restaurants in Indore; while you can get a good meal for Rs. 50 in any of the small eateries the big restaurants could cost you anywhere Rs. 500. For your regular meals you either opt for mess or Tiffin delivered at your apartment, but they will be serving only Indian food, if Indian food is not your taste you can try cooking it yourself. Many ready to eat meals are available but in long term they might end up being costly proposition for you.


Communication

There are many ways by which you can stay connected to your friend and family back home, and contact us in emergency or need. Public Phones Indore has got lots of pay phones, they can be spotted in every nook and corner, payphones are generally designated by PCO or ‘Public Call Office’ They charge Rs. 2 for a local call while some coin drop pay phones take Re. 1 coin.

Some have International Calling facility available designated by ‘ISD’, from here you can call your family and friends, here you pay as per charges on the indicator above the phone or computer printout. PCO - Local Calls STD- Intercity calls ISD - International calls. Mobile Phones: They are widely used, and there are many service providers in Indore that provide good services, your foreign subscription is unlikely to work in here. If you have a mobile phone you can bring it along with you, a connection or SIM costs about Rs. 150 and if you use it modestly your monthly charges would be anywhere around Rs. 200, a simple mobile handset in India costs anywhere Rs.1500.


Internet Access If you happen to bring along a laptop, you can have an Internet connection, but they have high initial cost and most of them require telephone lines or cables, some mobile service providers provide Internet services but they are costly. Anyways you can always go to any of the many cyber cafes in the city they are cheap and provide high-speed Internet access, they will charge you anywhere Rs. 15 – 20 per hour.

ROLE OF A TRAINEE Please notify us well in advance of your exact arrival date and time (in 24hr format) and with which airline/flight number (or ship or train or Bus or on foot ;)) you are coming. Most European airlines arrive in the Middle of the night in New Delhi, so please be careful about the date! We will be there to pick you up in INDORE! Initiate opportunities for cultural exchange & discuss your problems with AIESEC members Do your job whole heartedly and to the best of your abilities. Fill in the traineeship reports we will give you, to give us Feedback. Help us help you -this is only possible if you talk to us about any Problems, anything that you expect us to do, any questions you Have, etc. Participate in the activities we organise for you. Get yourself involved in the work and know more about the Organization.
