CAGE CAGE

2018 | Built | 275 sqm Mumbai, India Design | Execution MMA Matrix Gym is a Mixed Martial Arts Gym located in Bandra West, Mumbai. A space for fighters, the Gym has been designed for cardiovascular and weight training, a cage for the fights, a corner to recover & a juice bar. The cage mesh defines the Gym and it has been used as a design element for the dividers, the lockers & the bar stools; the wooden bar counter brings in earthiness while the black exposed ceiling, concrete finishes and glass partitions complete the look. The lighting has been designed with a continuous magnetic track that folds and covers the whole gym area without interruption while still providing flexibility as per the needs. The indoor plants create a relaxing and pleasing environment to exercise in.

THE GREEN LINK Abraham John Architects 2018 | 1st Prize Competition Mumbai, India Competition Team Leader The development of an urban park above railway lines creates accessible and usable green public spaces providing an enhanced experience for daily commuters & casual visitors. The design suggests a renewed system of transport, allowing one to walk, cycle & use the train, generating a balance between private & public modes, reducing congestion and overcrowding. At the same time, the design will drive more people to use the public modes of transportation by creating large spaces of public use in the form of cycling tracks, greenways for their recreational use thereby generating a balance between private and public modes, making sure both congestion and overcrowding are taken care of.

DORMITORY FOR INCLUSIVE SCHOOL Fundaciรณn Vicente Ferrer 2015 - 2017 | Built Anantapur, India Design | Execution The dormitory building was built to host the children who study in the Primary School for Inclusive Education. In contrast with the school, the building is looking inside. This structure gives the children safety, independence and privacy. Six dormitory blocks are being interspersed among courtyards ensuring ventilation and natural light. The centre of the building is an oversized chess board where children spend time playing around. The design of the veranda roof is a vault made in metal sheet above the rest of concrete slabs leaving in between enough space for ventilation. The complex was designed giving special attention to the children who will host the building and their difficulties so that the use of textures, colours and natural light have been carefully considered to make their lives easier.

PHASE 0 EXPLANATION OF THE NEW CONCEPT

PHASE 1 FEASIBILITY STUDY + MEETING THE COMMUNITY

1st approach: Technical visit + Meeting the Communities Explaining the project. Make sure that the village comply with the requirements

PHASE 2 WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

COMMUNITY CENTERS, NAVABUKOTA Fundación Vicente Ferrer 2017 | Under Construction Anantapur, India Design | Management The new concept design for Community Centers has the goal of adapting to every village’s requirement or need. It is important for the project to get the community involved since the very beginning in order to create the feeling of possession and in consequence make people feel responsible for the building and maintain it properly in the future. We have to look to participation as a guide. This guide must be based on all the analysis and work done with the community and to the site since the first contact with the village.

CORE USES

VOLATILE USES

OPEN SPACES

CONNECTIONS

In terms of concept design, what we did is splitting the previous concept in smaller pieces and in such a way making it more flexible to create a longer list of options. The community must participate in both phases, choosing among the options and then designing the building along with the architects. They must also agree every step forward as it is the only way of making things work. The list of options provided is endless and it will grow as much as needed. The blocks are divided in two main groups: fixed blocks and optional blocks. This means that every project will have a list of mandatory options, those that RDT imposed according to the organization criteria (storage, water point and toilet) and those that will give the shape to the whole building (metal roof and paved platform). The rest of the blocks are optional and here is where the community has to start working. Within this last group the options are divided as per budget and so the communities have to be able to spend their budget cleverly according to their needs.

2nd approach: First workshop Introduction of the concept to the village. Explanation of the options in detail / Voting

PHASE 3 DESIGNING WITH THE COMMUNITY

3rd approach: Design Stage Verify the feasibility. Double check with the community the options chosen. Check design according Vaastu or other specific requirements. Reach a Final design and present it to the village.

NAVABUKOTA CASE Navabukota is the first village where the new concept of Community Center is being implemented. At the moment construction has started after having completed the previous 3 phases. Fixed blocks given:

BEFORE

RocĂo VahĂ Architectos 2013 | Built | 80 sqm Seville, Spain Design | Execution Plaza de la Alfalfa is one of the busiest plazas in the center of Sevilla. The tiny space for sellers was making sales difficult. The size of the boutique was enlarged by opening it to the public. The pharmacy was divided into sections according to different sciences. The aesthetics reminisces the old pharmacies in the old town while offering nowadays products.

The proposal starts in valuing the ancient mediterranean housing typology and the condition of the piece itself. Working in an specific historical context and adecuating to the current conditions of contemporary life at the same time. Considering, not just the piece, but the evolution that the society is experimenting in the area. The proposal is focused on the residential use but in an specific way. A programme targeted to the elderly population of the city, a vulnareble group of people that is suffering from the relocation to adapted residences for that age, out of the city center where they have spent their whole lives. The aim is to design a place for this group of people to age in relation to their past and enjoying their present.

Orientation Orientation

BLOTNIA PAVILION Academic Project 2012 Blotnia, Gdansk, Poland Diploma Project Blotnia countryside is where the ephimeral pavilion for students is located. The area presents a pronounced slope, surrounded by forests. In the highest point, there is an abandoned train wagon, which will take part in the pavilion. The new structure will be used mainly by students, during different seasons of the year. Period would be as long as projects require. The idea is to work with a fixed foundation designed and give more flexibility to the upper levels. Rooms are desing depending on the activity that is taking place and the weather conditions, as in Poland should be specially taken into account.
