WYOMING COACHING STAFF honors since 2009. It was the fourth individual event victory during Jensen’s tenure. Stewart’s 208 (-8) also tied for the third-best tournament score in school history. Jensen directed the 2012-13 Cowboys to their fourth-consecutive Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic team award for having a team grade point average of 3.0 or better. The Cowboys were one of 79 teams honored from NCAA Division I and one of just two schools from the Mountain West in 2012-13. Junior Eric Parish was also named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Parish was the 10th Cowboy to receive the prestigious honor. The 2011-12 Cowboys had a team GPA of 3.39. Cowboys Jake Hedge, Eric Parish, Case Ruff and Eddie Stewart earned Academic All-Mountain West honors. Parish and Ruff also earned MW Scholar-Athlete awards. He also helped junior Clinton Boutelle to a 15th place finish at the Mountain West Championship. In 2010-11 Jensen directed senior Gabe Maier to his second consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearance. Maier was the first Cowboy since current PGA tour player David Hearn to earn consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. Maier also tied the school record low round at the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., firing a 63 (-7). For the third consecutive season Jensen helped lead the Cowboys to a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic team. Cowboys Phil Henzlik, Parish and Ruff earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete awards. Wyoming golf also had four student-athletes selected Academic All-MW, including Henzlik, Maier, Ruff and Zach Zaremba. The 2009-10 season was a banner year for the Cowboys as they sent their first golfer to the NCAA Regional Tournament since 2002, as well as being named a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic team. Cowboy Gabe Maier earned UW’s first NCAA Regional Tournament berth since 2002 with his 12th place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championship. Also during the 2009-10 season the Cowboys were named a GCAA All-Academic Team with a combined GPA of 3.18. Cowboy golfers Henzlik, Maier, Zaremba and Ruff were all named Academic All-MWC. Henzlik and Ruff also earned MWC Scholar-Athlete Awards. In addition to the numerous school records, the Wyoming golf program added two individual tournament championships in 2009. Cowgirl Jonelle Martinez won the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship and Cowboy Gabe Maier won the 2009 Jensen with Drew McCullough at the 2015 MW Championship University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. In the summer of 2009, Jensen was involved in the Palmer Cup, which is college golf’s version of the Ryder Cup. The event, which pits 10 American college players against 10 college players from Europe, was played at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo. For his efforts with the Palmer Cup, Jensen was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America in December of that year. In 2007, the Cowgirls hosted the first annual Cowgirl Classic during the same week as the men’s event. The Cowgirls’ event will be held for the ninth consecutive season during the spring of 2015 at the Ak Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. In addition to the Cowboy and Cowgirl Classics held each spring in the Phoenix area, the Cowboys began hosting the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate tournament in 2008. The sixth annual Desert Intercollegiate was held on Feb. 21-23, 2013 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The Classic Club is the host course of the PGA’s Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. In 2003, his second as head coach of the Cowboys, Jensen initiated the UW/Cleveland Golf Cowboy Classic Collegiate tournament. The event is held each spring in Scottsdale, Ariz., and hosts many of the top college golf programs in the country. The 2005 tournament marked Jensen’s Cowboy squad’s best finish with a second-place finish of the 20 teams in the event. Jensen’s teams annually excel in the classroom, as evident in 2005 and 2006 when Cowboy golfer Dan Silva was named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the GCAA in back-to-back years. In 2010, Phil Henzlik, Gabe Maier and Zach Zaremba were recognized for the honor, as Parish joined the list of Cowboys named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in 2013. During his first two seasons as head coach, Jensen coached All-Southwest Region selection Mike Urbatchka in 2002 and AllAmerica Scholar honoree Kurt Kowaluk in 2003. His teams have also been recognized for their efforts off the course by winning the Athletics Director Award two times. The annual award, which is based on excellence in athletics, team GPA and community service, was given to the Cowboy golf team in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Active within the community, Jensen is currently on the University of Wyoming Academic Planning Committee. He is also Chairman of the Board of the UW First Tee Chapter, a nationally recognized junior golf program primarily supported by the PGA and USTA with a curriculum of life skills and golf skills. Jensen was instrumental in organizing UW’s First Tee program and served as the chapter’s executive director for a year.

JOSEY STENDER Asst. Director of Wyoming Golf Head Cowgirl Coach Josey Stender enters her 12th season at the helm for the University of Wyoming women’s golf team in 2016-17. Stender has served as head coach of the Cowgirls and assistant director of Wyoming golf since August of 2005. The UW program has grown in leaps and bounds on the golf course during Stender’s tenure, while also continuing its tradition of achievements in the academic realm. Much of the success comes from Stender’s coaching philosophy, which exemplifies her compassion for molding young adults. The 2015-16 season UW was highlighted by a couple top-five finishes for the Cowgirls. Wyoming claimed second at the Bobcat Spring Invite and a fourth-place finish at the Grand Canyon Invite. At the GCU Invite, Stender guided Gabrielle Gibson to a secondplace finish, which was the best of her career. It also became the top-individual finish for a Cowgirl since Juanita Rico finished second at the Guistana Memorial Classic in 2011. Just before conference play, UW was led by four Cowgirls in the top-20 at the Bobcat Spring Invite, with Klara Castillo and Kaylee Knadler each tied for fifth place. Additionally, Wyoming’s three-round total (894 +30) at the Bobcat Spring Invite was the fourth-best 54-hole score in program history. The third-round score of 294 (+6) was a season best and the third lowest in Cowgirl history. “I value the idea that members of our Wyoming golf team have a great college experience on and off the course,” she said of her athletes. “I look for well-rounded student-athletes who are willing to work hard to accomplish their goals athletically, while also striving to excel in the classroom for their future.” Stender’s list of achievements while directing the Cowgirls include helping the program rewrite the Wyoming record book and garnering multiple team and individual honors. Under her tutelage, the Cowgirls have posted their top-seven lowest Head coach Josey Stender and the Cowgirls team event scores and team round scores, including setting the pose after shooting a program-best 891 at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial in 2008. best marks in both categories at the 2008 CU/Heather Farr Memorial. In the final round UW shot a 291 (+3), which gave them a score of 891 (+27) for the tournament. The Wyoming women also picked up their first team win in 10 years with a title at the Bronco Fall Invitational in 2008, while posting their first back-to-back, top-three team finishes during the 2011-12 season. Individually, several members of the UW women’s golf team have shined with the help of Stender. Juanita Rico set the Cowgirl record for lowest individual season stroke average at 75.5 during 2011-12, as she also became just the second UW woman to earn Mountain West Golfer of the Month accolades. Five of UW’s top six golfers in stroke average competed under Stender, while UW’s top three lowest individual rounds and top six lowest individual event scores have come with her guidance. Stender also coached Jonelle Martinez, who was one of the most accomplished golfers in Wyoming history. Martinez became the second Cowgirl to win an individual Mountain West Championship by claiming the title in 2009 and was named to the First Team All-Conference squad as well. In the classroom, the Cowgirls have earned a total of 31 Academic All-Mountain West honors and 12 MW Scholar-Athlete Awards during Stender’s tenure. Eight student-athletes have also been named All-American Scholars by the National Golf Coaches Association under Stender. Stender has also helped broaden the name of Wyoming golf by hosting several big-name tournaments. The program hosted the sixth-annual Wyoming Cowgirl The Stender Family Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz., during the spring of 2012 and Jeff, Josey, Griffin, Jovee and Porter Stender

WYOMING COACHING STAFF held the first-annual Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., during the fall of 2011. Stender came to UW from Boise, Idaho, where she had been the communications director for the Idaho Golf Association. A collegiate golfer at the University of Memphis from 1998-2003, she served as a graduate assistant intern in the fall of 2003. Formerly Josey Edwards, she married Jeff Stender on Aug. 20, 2005. Josey and Jeff, an assistant principal at Laramie Junior High, have a son named Griffin, born in July 2008, and twins Jovee and Porter, born in March 2010. The Wyoming’s men’s and women’s golf programs were restructured in 2005, as Joe Jensen was elevated from his position of head men’s coach and was named director of both the UW men’s and women’s programs. Jensen remains the Cowboy head coach and oversees all aspects of Wyoming’s golf teams, while Stender primarily works with the UW women’s squad but also serves as the assistant director under Jensen. As the assistant director, Stender is involved in multiple aspects of Wyoming golf, including outreach, recruiting, practice, putting together the home events hosted by both teams Stender with former Wyoming golfer Stacey Blunt and scheduling with both squads. “She’s always striving to get better,” Jensen said. “We’re trying to compete on a national level. I think that’s our expectation and she’s on board with that. She just does an amazing job. “It’s how she connects with the players and her honesty. It’s her coaching style. She doesn’t say too much, but she says enough. Our players are very fortunate. She just has a great way of adapting to the players and the players trust her.” Stender earned her bachelor’s degree in education, with an emphasis on sports and leisure studies/sports management from Memphis in 2001, and then earned her Master’s of Science in sports and leisure commerce from Memphis in 2004. An accomplished student, she received numerous academic honors during her playing career, including being named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Athlete team three times; 1999-2000, 2001-02 and 2002-03. Stender, an Idaho native, had a successful amateur career in her home state. She won three state high school titles and earned the 1999 Idaho Women’s Amateur Championship, as well as being named the Rocky Mountain PGA Female Amateur Golfer of the Year that same year. She was a member of the USGA Idaho State Team in 2003, and was a participant at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in 2004. Stender was runner-up in the 2001 Pacific Northwest Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship. She currently is an apprentice for the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division.

WYOMING GOLF FACILITIES
RON R. RICHARDSON GOLF PERFORMANCE CENTER ABOUT RON R. RICHARDSON The Fisher family—Blake and Julie Fisher and Donne and Sue Fisher—Pat Spieles and Carol McMurry, and donors who wish to remain anonymous made the lead donations for the golf facility. The facility is named in honor of the Fishers’ family friend, Ron Richardson. Donne and Sue Fisher’s support of the University of Wyoming has been extraordinary. In addition to supporting athletics, they support academics and made the lead donation to the UW Literacy Center and Research Clinic. Their original intention was to name the literacy center after Ron. The Richardson family was incredibly flattered and taken aback by the Fishers’ gesture but felt that naming the golf facility after Ron would be more appropriate. The Richardson family’s ties to athletics and golf runs deep. Tracy Richardson, Ron’s son, who works for the UW Foundation and helped raise funds for this project, is a former UW Cowboy golfer. Ron and his wife Kris created the Ronald R. Richardson Golf Excellence Fund to foster excellence and provide support to the UW men’s and women’s golf programs. Ron was also very involved with Cowboy Joe Club. It seemed only fitting to name the facility after someone so dedicated to UW golf.

ABOUT THE CENTER
The facility includes four 8-foot-wide hitting bays; an 1,800-plus-square-foot indoor putting green with a high-tech synthetic surface; a state-of-the-art golf simulator; a centralized location for range balls with a washing station; and a team room with amenities, locker rooms, an office, study areas, a team lounge, a hall of fame, and recognition of donors. The simulator is from the industry leader aboutGolf and is the same type the Golf Channel uses. Its 3D graphics let the golfer feel like they are really on a particular course—it’s possible to golf in Florida in February without leaving Wyoming. The company spends more than a year reproducing every course so the golfer feels like they’re really there. The launch monitor is provided by Trackman, another industry leader in golf technology. It gives the golfer reliable swing and ball flight data, which are essential to game improvement. These tools are the best in the industry, which is what UW golfers need to become top-notch players and to remain competitive. Cowboy and Cowgirl golf players will be able to improve every aspect of their game—from putting to driving to everything in between. This center gives them the opportunity to practice year-round in an environment that mimics actual playing surfaces. “I can easily say we have greatly enhanced the overall studentathlete experience for Wyoming golf,” Jensen said. “It is wonderful to see the pride the student-athletes and alumni have in this building. I have no doubts it is going to create an improved yearround training environment.” It will also be a place where the golf teams can host alumni events, allowing previous generations and current students to mingle and swap stories. “I don’t think it could have turned out any better, and it is just a great example of all the great people we have surrounding our studentathletes,” Stender said.

MORE THAN GOLF
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Golf is a game where power meets control, and flexibility and balance are the keys to coordinating body movements. The strength and conditioning program for Wyoming's Cowboy and Cowgirl Golf teams addresses these areas while reducing the risk of injury in a highly repetitive sport. Each athlete receives a program that is designed to address the needs of the game. Exercises are chosen based on their ability to improve balance, core strength, power, flexibility, and total body strength. Focus is given to balancing the muscular strength and flexibility in all important areas of the body. Each lifting session is guided by a certified and trained coach to ensure proper execution and intensity. The mission of the University of Wyoming Strength and Conditioning program is to enhance the collegiate experience of each athlete both physically and mentally. This should be accomplished through scientific training methods, as well as through the promotion of a healthy training environment. The Rochelle Athletic Center Weight Room serves as the main training facility for the majority of the Wyoming varsity athletes. The Fieldhouse weight room is also used by UW teams. This facility is used throughout the year depending upon sport schedules. Strength and conditioning coach Ricky Hargraves works directly with the men's and women's golf teams at UW.
THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for studentathletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 15th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 14 years of Omni Tucson National Golf Club existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated Tucson, Ariz. solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to experiment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West was among the first Mission Hills Country Club in conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the-art basketball instant replay system. Rancho Mirage, Calif. The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders five MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, respectively, while Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State add a West coast influence with their locations in Central, Southern and Northern California. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean. For the 14th consecutive season, the Mountain West sent at least three men’s golf teams to the NCAA Tournament. New Mexico earned the league’s automatic bid and was joined by San Diego State and UNLV with at-large invitations. The Lobos and Rebels qualified for the 2013 NCAA Finals, marking the third time in the last four years and ninth time overall the league was represented by at least two teams at the NCAA National Championship. Both teams advanced to match play, which was the first time in Mountain West history the Conference had multiple squads competing in match play at the NCAA Championship. UNLV’s Kevin Penner tied for second place at the NCAA Finals, equaling the highest individual finish for a MW golfer since UNLV’s Ryan Moore captured medalist honors in 2004. On the women’s side, UNLV earned the Mountain West’s automatic berth and made its 12th straight appearance in the NCAA Women’s Golf Regionals.

WYOMING TRADITIONS RAGTIME COWBOY JOE The familiar fight song of the University of Wyoming athletics teams is Ragtime Cowboy Joe. This song is performed by the band as UW teams enter the playing surface, following a score or big play, and to fire up the fans. The Cowboy and Cowgirl studentathletes traditionally sing this following each Wyoming victory.
RAGTIME COWBOY JOE “He always sings raggy music to the cattle as he swings back and forward in the saddle, on a horse - a pretty good horse! He’s got a syncopated gaiter, and you ought to hear the meter to the roar of his repeater; how they run - yes run! - when they hear that he’s ‘a-comin’, cause the western folks all know, he’s a high-falootin’, rootin, tootin’, son of a gun from ol’ Wyoming, Ragtime Cowboy, Talk about your Cowboy, Ragtime Cowboy Joe.”
THE WILD BUNCH The Wild Bunch is the official athletics fan club for University of Wyoming students. The Wild Bunch is one BIG fan club for all 17 NCAA Division I sports at the University of Wyoming. The Wild Bunch leads Wyoming fans in spirit, tradition and passion for Wyoming Athletics. Members of the Wild Bunch receive multiple benefits, and as a student at UW, The Wild Bunch is the best way to become involved in Wyoming Athletics.
COWBOY NICKNAME The nickname “Cowboys” was applied to Wyoming athletic teams as early as 1891 - two years before the first official football game. The story is that the Wyoming pick-up football team appealed to a 220 pound cowpuncher, Fred Bush, for help in a game against the Cheyenne Soldiers. Bush signed up for a course or two and came out for the team. When he trotted onto the field decked out in a checkered shirt and Cowboy hat, someone yelled, “Hey, look at the Cowboy!” Since many of the members of the team were also ex-cowboys, the name stuck. When women’s sports were added at UW, the nickname of Cowgirls was applied to those squads.
COWBOY JOE PONY Cowboy Joe IV, a fourth generation Wyoming mascot, trots around War Memorial Stadium after each Cowboy touchdown, a tradition which started in 1950 when the Farthing Family of Cheyenne made a generous donation of a young pony to become Wyoming’s mascot. Cowboy Joe also represents UW in parades around the region, appears in Tailgate Park on football game days and leads the band and team in the pre-game Cowboy Walk. This beautiful little pony is very popular with Cowboy & Cowgirl fans of all ages.

WYOMING TRADITIONS SPIRIT SQUADS The primary purpose of Wyoming’s Spirit Squads is to support the Cowboys and Cowgirls, and to serve as public relations ambassadors for the University of Wyoming. The UW cheer and pom squads work hard to get the crowd involved, lead cheers, entertain, and to boost the level of fan excitement and support to new extremes. In addition to their game-day involvement at UW Athletics’ contests, Wyoming Spirit Squad members also make numerous appearances at university activities, functions, programs, charitable and public events. Cowboy and Cowgirl sports are flying high and the Wyoming Spirit Squads are leading the way.
PISTOL PETE Pistol Pete is a UW student mascot who works alongside the Wyoming Spirit Squads, encouraging the crowd and getting fans involved in the game.
WESTERN THUNDER MARCHING BAND The University of Wyoming Marching Band “Western Thunder” - features musicians from nearly every major on campus, who perform for thousands of football fans each year at home and road Cowboy football games. The Wyoming Pep Band plays at numerous other UW sporting events.
UW’S LOGO - STEAMBOAT One of the nation’s best, and most distinctive logos, the image on Wyoming’s uniforms depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse. This symbol has been a part of the University of Wyoming Athletics Department since the early 1920’s, when UW Equipment Manger Deane Hunton obtained a photograph of a cowboy, Guy Holt, riding the world famous bucking horse Steamboat. Hunton had the photo made into a logo, which was then utilized by UW athletic teams. While there are differing opinions on exactly which horse and rider is depicted on all of UW’s athletic uniforms today, it is the symbol that is important. The bucking horse and rider represents the toughness, and the never-say-die spirit that is Wyoming. A statue honoring the symbol called ‘Fanning a Twister’, was erected at the north entrance of UW’s athletics facilities in 1991.

BROWN AND GOLD COLORS The story behind the colors of the University of Wyoming dates back to 1895. In the spring of that year, the first ever UW Alumni Banquet was held. Decorations for the banquet included Brown-Eyed Susans, a flower native of Southeastern Wyoming. The Alumni were so impressed with the colors (brown and yellow) and the beauty of the flowers that they decided to select these colors as the official school colors at UW. Currently, the colors are described as brown and gold.

Spend some time here and you’ll agree that much of UW’s character is shaped by this great “home on the range.” Laramie, the location of the main campus, is a safe, friendly community of 30,000 people. Nestled between the Laramie and Snowy Range mountains in southeastern Wyoming, it’s a beautiful, unspoiled place with a special life-style. The campus extends over 785 tree-shaded acres. There’s an attractive mix of modern and traditional structures; many were built with native Wyoming sandstone. It’s a place where the sun shines 320 days each year. It’s hard to be gloomy here. When you view it from 7,200 feet, you see things more clearly. But it’s not just a pretty place; it’s also a place that works. Up-to-date facilities support the learning and research mission that makes UW special. There are classrooms with state-of-the art computer technology, laboratories with the latest equipment, excellent libraries, computer systems with universal Internet access, and a long list of premier research facilities both on campus and in the surrounding area.

WYOMING…LIKE NO PLACE ON EARTH | The Tetons and Snake River |
They say it’s beauty is like no other, and you fall in love with its people. Wyoming, it is like no place on earth. Within it’s boundaries is America’s first and largest national park, Yellowstone. The unbounding beauty there includes “Old Faithful” geyser and Yellowstone Lake, the world’s largest high-mountain lake. There is Yellowstone Falls, so awe-inspiring, it’ll take your breath away. There are over 260 different species of animals and birds located there. Wyoming’s wonders seem to be unending. There is Grand Teton National Park, whose centerpiece is the spectacular Teton Mountain Range. There is Devil’s Tower, America’s first national monument. There is the world’s largest mineral hot springs located in Thermopolis. There is the beauty of Ten Sleep Canyon and a hundred other places.
| Devil's Tower National Monument |
For breathtaking beauty, Wyoming is unmatched. Its reputation brings millions of visitors to its borders each year. Plus, some of the best skiing in America can be found in Wyoming. Tourists and sportsmen can’t wait to get here to enjoy the clean mountain air and limitless outdoor attractions. The history of the great American West can be heard whistling through the trees of Wyoming. Wyoming had an historic place in the taming of the West in the late 1800’s. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were two of Wyoming’s most famous citizens during the era of lawlessness. There remain plenty of reminders of an age that will live forever in American lore.
| Yellowstone Falls |
People are Wyoming’s strongest resource. These folks are down to earth, friendly and helpful. And, oh how proud they are of their Cowboys and Cowgirls. Wyoming has some of the best fans in America. As their only four-year university, Wyoming folks are tremendously supportive of their teams. Yet, as down to earth as they are, many Wyomingites are on the cutting edge of politics, entertainment and business. Among some of the most famous are: former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney; Dr. Jerry Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers; Dean Conger, former chief photographer of the National Geographic Society; Curt Gowdy, the most decorated national sportscaster in history; Alan Simpson, former United States Senator; Gerry Spence, attorney and television personality; and General Pete Schoomaker, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff.

For great people, great scenery and a great education, there is no place quite like Wyoming.

LARAMIE…THE CLEAR CHOICE One of the best things about Laramie is its location between two beautiful mountain ranges. It’s a place of blue skies and clean air. Much of the area surrounding Laramie is public National Forest land. That means great access!
