The Initiative The American Academy of Emergency Physicians (AAEP) Post-Primary Care Graduate Fellowship in Emergency Medicine program credentials selected emergency medicine fellowships, designed to provide training in emergency medicine to qualified primary care physicians with backgrounds in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and general surgery. These fellowships are intended to meet the rigorous national board certification standards of the American Board of Physician Specialties速 (ABPS速), the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc.速 (AAPS速).

Often a primary care physician’s interests or geographic requirements create a need for continuing education and experience in emergency medicine. Graduate fellowships in emergency medicine help solve critical workforce shortages in many over-crowded emergency departments. The American Academy of Emergency Physicians (AAEP) credentials emergency medicine fellowship programs that prepare primary care physicians to become highly qualified in emergency medicine. Fellows work under the supervision of faculty experienced in all aspects of emergency medicine. Upon completion of post-graduate training and practice experience, participating physicians are eligible to apply for Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM).

BCEM is one of 17 national Member Boards of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS), which certifies both allopathic and osteopathic trained physicians.

Institutional Considerations Sponsoring institutions need to be appropriately organized for the conduct of graduate medical education (GME) in a scholarly environment and be committed to excellence in both education and medical care. This commitment is exhibited by the provision of leadership and resources that enable the institution to achieve compliance with the requirements. This includes providing an environment in which the educational requirements, as well as the applicable requirements for scholarly activity, can be met. The regular assessment of the quality of the educational programs is an essential component of this commitment.

Program Elements and Application Specific program elements are outlined in the application. They include scope and duration of training, eligible candidates, program organization, program personnel, facilities and resources, educational program, program research and scholarly activity, evaluation and BCEM certification. Program requirements and fees are also identified in the application.
