WHY BOARD CERTIFY
Hospitals and managed care organizations increasingly require board certification to obtain privileges. Even malpractice carriers require board certification for liability coverage. The Board of Certification in Family Medicine Obstetrics ® (BCFMO ® ) provides a path to board certification in family medicine obstetrics for family physicians who have completed advanced training in maternity care and obstetrics and are practicing the specialty. Board certification helps translate the complex language of Family Medicine and break down barriers to privileging and patient care for communities in need.

AN ESSENTIAL SPECIALTY
Access to maternal healthcare in urban and rural areas and even urban underserved communities has become increasingly scarce. Family Physicians who provide comprehensive maternity care are essential to reducing infant and maternal mortality and addressing the overwhelming need for safe, reliable access to obstetrical care.
The American Board of Physician Specialties ® (ABPS) developed BCFMO ® to provide a path to certification for family physicians who have dedicated their careers to obstetrical care. Physicians certified in this essential specialty are ideally suited to lead multidisci -

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS
Certification requirements utilize standards identified in the peer-reviewed medical literature as a framework for eligibility.
Family Medicine Obstetrics Requirements Family Medicine Obstetrics
Have completed certification in the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) and Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) programs or equivalent.
Submit a case log that is externally validated by one of the following: Medical Records, Medical Office Staff, Medical Director, Department Chair, or Program Director.
Case log must demonstrate evidence or ongoing obstetric practice by having completed 60 vaginal deliveries, 15 of which must have been in the last 2 years (including those performed in residency and/or fellowship training).
Completed a 12-month, full-time fellowship recognized by the BCFMO. Family Physicians who have not completed a fellowship are still encouraged to apply.
In addition to the Family Medicine Obstetrics requirements 1 and 2 above, submit a case log of cesarean sections*, including those as primary surgeon, with a minimum of 10 in the past 2 years.

EXAM INFORMATION
The non-surgical path to certification requires a computer based written test. The surgical path for certification requires the written test and an additional oral examination covering five case studies. Candidates must first pass the written exam to become eligible to take the oral portion.
