NATIONAL INITIATIVE FUND What is NIF? The National Initiative Fund (NIF) was created to strategically advance awareness and recognition of ABPS Member Boards as a choice for physicians. NIF contributions enable the organization to advocate for ABPS Board Certifications with influential stakeholders, including the U.S. Congress, state legislators, state medical boards, hospital systems and health plans.

★NIF ACHIEVEMENTS★ ABPS is becoming a recognized option for physician board certification in the healthcare industry. This is the result of hospitals, health plans, online databases and communication platforms updating their policies and bylaws to include ABPS. These efforts are funded solely by donations from ABPS Diplomates and Members.

Please seriously consider contributing to NIF to help strengthen our efforts onVision your behalf. 3 Exceeding the 2019-2020 Annualwww.aapsus.org Report

A Letter from the President Dear Fellow Diplomates & Members: I am proud and humbled to have served as your President of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc (AAPS). I have had the great fortune to serve alongside some of the greatest physicians I have known that I now consider dear friends. We have navigated the organization through some challenging times alongside our Tampa leadership and staff, and I am so grateful that we have come out ahead. Thanks to our collaborative efforts I can now leave the Terrance Lee Baker, MD, MS, FAAEP

position knowing that together we have built a stronger more stable organization.

Over the past year, we have ended the litigation that so long overshadowed the brilliant work our colleagues have been doing. We have advanced awareness and recognition of our boards of certification and strengthened our financial future through strongly established strategies where we stayed the course. The Tampa leadership, Staff and our Diplomate volunteers seamlessly worked together to ensure a better future. We have come together during our country’s greatest healthcare crisis in a century to push on higher levels of patient safety and care through the establishment of suggested treatment protocols, the Essential Workers Bill of Rights and our continuing efforts with national leaders during this pandemic.

It is with great confidence and humility that I leave as your President knowing that the organization is on a path to growth like we have never seen before. ABPS’ continued dialogue and relationships with leading physician and healthcare organizations, public policy makers along with state and federal legislators only grows in strength and in numbers. This is having a great impact in strengthening the role of our Member Boards within the healthcare community and before multiple stakeholders. I cannot thank you enough for allowing me the privilege of being your President. I offer you my sincere thanks and ask that you continue to support the great work our Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Tampa team continue to do on your behalf. Your continued support and engagement make our mission possible. Please join me and the AAPS Board of Directors in celebrating the advancement of ABPS. Cordially,

Terrence L. Baker, MD, MS, FAAEP

Federal Regulatory and Legislative Activities Much advancement in our strategy and efforts have been made since June of 2019. AAPS Chief Executive Officer Jeff Morris, JD, and our external affairs consultant, Monique Tapie, continue to positively grow the credibility and perception of the ABPS boards of certification. Their work has exponentially increased before key House and Senate stakeholders with strong oversight in the areas most impacting our physicians’ certifications. From faceto-face meetings, to committee briefings, the team has made great strides in unveiling the vast control and negative impact the monopoly has on patient safety and care, along with patient access to highly skilled board-certified physicians. Most recently, the team has been able to capitalize on the development of the White Paper developed by the nationally recognized antitrust attorney on the “call for antitrust enforcement of the ABMS”. The White Paper supports the ABPS’ external affairs team’s longstanding work with key stakeholders on how the monopoly in physician board certification is a threat to our overall healthcare system, and how the country is in need of change of the antiquated healthcare system the monopoly controls. The White Paper greatly demonstrates the need for competition within physician board certification and recognizes ABPS as a true standard and choice. In addition, the unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic has allowed Jeff, Monique, and the team to expand their work with influencers inclusive of Attorneys General, the DOJ and FTC, along with legislators. Their work has allowed them to expose the damage the monopoly has had on patient access to critical care at a time of the greatest healthcare crisis our country has seen in the last century. Our dedicated team is now more driven than ever, especially as they continue to build upon the foundation they have so strongly and successfully established.

Exceeding the Vision State Legislative Activities During this year’s legislative session ABPS lobbied on 64 bills in 26 states. There were 30 bills that included ABMS and only one incorporated ABPS. Our national lobbyist, Linda Murphy, successfully killed 3 of these bills and prevented ABMS from being listed exclusively in law. ABPS was also able to successfully defeat the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact bill in New York

Thank you for A D V A N C I N G the American Board of Physician Specialties in your healthcare community.

American Board of Physician SpecialtiesÂŽ Healthcare stakeholders across the country recognize the value of physician board certification. Patients, physicians, practice management groups, and others with an interest in healthcare have differing interpretations about why board certification matters. Make no mistake. It does matter to anyone who cares about the effectiveness of the American healthcare system and the advancement of public health. It starts with patients. The basic mission of the ABPS is to make sure that patients receive access to the best possible care.
