Notes from the Editor

An Obligation to Buy Local? I feel a ping of guilt whenever an Amazon parcel is delivered to my door. It’s not the guilt of a criminal mind. Just a tweak of consciousness, reminding me that I haven’t contributed in a way I could have. It’s a bit like walking past a wheelie bin that’s blown over in the wind without picking it up. The feeling comes from knowing that whatever it is I’ve bought, I could probably have bought it locally. Instead, the package has come from who knows where? It has been delivered by a driver in such a hurry that their van is practically airborne over the village speed bumps. And it has been placed in a box with enough brown paper and air cushioned packaging to half fill my recycling bin. And if all that needed a cherry on top, there’s the knowledge that I’m supporting a business that for several months sneakily charged me for a Prime subscription I had no idea I’d signed up for. I was furious when they did that! Yet still, I order off Amazon, telling myself that I don’t do it that often it. In the same way that people on Facebook pretend they’re hardly ever on it and are definitely not the sort to post what restaurant they’ve been to or how far they’ve run today. I even get irritated by Amazon adverts. I heard an advert on the radio that seemed to imply that only losers would wait until shops re-open to buy their Christmas presents. And they’ve managed to stretch Black Friday out to an 11-day event. It niggled that at a time when small businesses and shops are

fighting to survive and can’t even trade because of lockdown, a corporation that clocked up sales of $75billion in the first three months of this year alone would attempt to further exploit the situation. This may be coming across like a speech delivered by an anti-corporate activist through a rolled up copy of The Big Issue. But ultimately, I’m one of many who would like to think of themselves as a supporter of local independent businesses, yet all too often resorts to online shopping for the convenience. Nearly all the Christmas gifts I have bought so far are from Amazon, and a rather uninspiring selection it is too. I’ve only realised what dull choices they are because of a feature in this edition of the magazine. We contacted an array of independent shops, stall holders and craftspeople from across the Horsham District, all offering something for Christmas, be it a hand-made tree decoration, a Teddy bear, or a metal pipe man on a motorbike. The idea was partly born out of desperation. Thanks to lockdown, we’ve not been able to do many of our usual features, so set about creating a list that had something for everyone. Kind of like a holiday mix tape from the 1980s, where everyone in the family picks their favourite song. You might not care much for mum’s China in Your Hand, but she’s not enormously impressed by your Pump up the Jam either. It’s the same here it won’t all be for you, but something will pique your interest.

We asked each owner to describe their business, suggest gift ideas and recommend another independent. Not only did they give us great gift suggestions, but the responses made me reflect on my views about online retailers. Whilst corporations like Amazon exploit opportunities, so too can independents. Online shopping isn’t going away and we all need to adapt to survive in business. Enterprising local businesses are already doing that and thriving. Piglet in Bed, a business that started in a barn in West Grinstead, is selling so much of its fabric in America that it now has a second base across the pond. Parkminster Candles is selling its luxurious products all over the world, thanks to global demand for English scents. Wakefield Jewellers, a feature of West Street for over a century, has invested in a new website that has led to a boom in online sales. For others, the key is to build a reputation as a “destination” outlet. The Horsham Cellar hosts tasting events to build its customer base, La Vida Boutique has one-to-one styling sessions with clients, Sussex Lighting offers a home design consultation service in addition to selling lights, while Steyning Bookstore works in partnership with authors to offer something unique. Shoppers shouldn’t necessarily feel obliged to “buy local”. However, I do hope that after reading the feature in this edition, you’ll feel more compelled to, as we do have fantastic businesses on our doorstep...

highlighting interesting routes and historic features. The idea draws inspiration from the Millennium Heritage trail, which saw 32 plaques placed across the District. The 20 new trails include an iron trail through Knepp, the New Beginnings Trail that takes in a walk around the historic Coolham Airfield, a Southwater Heritage Trail and an exploration of Bramber in a Walk in the Adur Valley.

The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with support from Horsham District Council, Treetop Design and the input of about 40 volunteers from Community Partnerships. The trails can be viewed online, where a resource guide can also be downloaded for anyone wanting to create their own heritage trail. https://www.horshammuseum.org/ heritagetrails

Essential site preparation work has begun at Horsham Enterprise Park in Wimblehurst Road, Horsham. It includes disposal of building waste, internal stripping of the central buildings, ground preparation, tree root protection and putting up perimeter hoardings. Commercial phases of the scheme will begin in spring 2021. It is hoped the Enterprise Park will include 25,000 square metres of employment space with up to 300 new homes. West Sussex County Council bought the former Novartis Pharmaceuticals site in 2016. The preparation work carried out by Axio (Special Works) Limited is due to take five months to complete.

A new bakery opened in Horsham’s Bishopric on Saturday 14 November. Gwyn’s Bakery has proved to be an immediate success, with long queues as residents show their support for the new business. The bakery is run by chef and baker Benjamin Lines, with a contemporary layout combining with traditional baking methods. One of its signature loaves is the Sussex Loaf, which fhas 50% heritage whole-wheat flour milled locally. https://gwynsbakery.co.uk

Horsham Football Club achieved the highest football attendance in the country on two occasions in October and November. Capacity has been limited to 600 by Covid restrictions and this figure was achieved for the 4-0 victory over Brightlingsea Regent and the 2-1 win over Corinthian Casuals. With elite football being played behind closed doors, many fans of teams in higher leagues have sampled the family-friendly atmosphere that the Camping World Community Stadium offers. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has introduced new heritage trails, offering walks and the chance for people to explore local history. The project, initiated by the Horsham District Community Partnerships Forum in 2018, initially intended to use local heritage to promote tourism. However, with more of us enjoying walks because of Covid, the heritage trails also encourage local people to further explore the area by

Eighty people participated in the Together in Horsham webinar from their own homes. The online event, celebrated as an evening of hope and positivity, enabled the community to come together and hear school, church and community leaders talk about how vulnerable children and families that need support can be reached. Collaboration between the Horsham Schools Partnership, the West Horsham Schools Network, Horsham Churches Together and Fegans will result in additional BACP-qualified counselling in schools.

Santa’s New Sleigh, a play by Brad Fitt with original music and songs by Richard Lamming, is showing at The Capitol, Horsham, on 12 - 24 December, with a relaxed performance on 14 December. The show is ideal for children aged 2 – 8, with audience participation, singalongs and a present from Santa for every child. It’s a 50-minute show with no interval and socially-distanced seating. Global travel restrictions will make Father Christmas’s job harder this year. However, it is hoped he will visit local attractions to spread some much-needed festive joy. The Magic of Christmas Toy Store at Fishers Farm, Wisborough Green, runs from 5 – 24 December. Children can choose their own present from a sack full of goodies. Visitors can also see a giant Christmas tree and meet Bonnie and Clyde, the nativity donkeys. Direct from the West End, The Showstoppers will be heading to The Capitol on 18 - 20 February 2021. With 12 years as an Edinburgh Fringe phenomenon, a BBC Radio 4 series, an acclaimed West End run and an Olivier Award to their name, The Showstoppers have delighted audiences with their blend of comedy, musical theatre and spontaneity. The Shipley Arts Festival is planning a musical feast to celebrate its 21st anniversary in 2021. The provisional programme includes live concerts to be streamed online. Following their poppy endeavours, ladies at Trafalgar Road Baptist Church have knitted angels to brighten up Christmas. The angels celebrate the staff at St Catherine’s Hospice, who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, despite the loss of income through fundraising events. The angels are also a symbol of remembrance to those who died this year. The installation of 35 angels are now displayed outside the church. Jackie Hutchinson, one of 12 angel knitters, said: “We hope lots of people will enjoy our angels and that it will lift their spirits after a difficult year. We also hope the angels will bring comfort and support for those who are grieving.” Traditionally, the church conducts a Service of Lights in partnership with the hospice. Raymond Briggs has been a Patron of his local children’s hospice for many years. His classic 1978 picture book is loved by families everywhere and Chestnut Tree House is hoping that children will be inspired to draw or paint their own snowman-themed work. It must feature a snowman (or more than one if you like) along with no more than 250 words about a special memory you have shared with someone. Horsham Freemasons restarted their hot meal deliveries initiative across the District during the second lockdown. Run in conjunction with Horsham Matters foodbank, the scheme has seen the freemasons deliver a hot, two-course Sunday lunch to vulnerable people every fortnight. The meals are cooked by Debra Moore, proprietor of The CafĂŠ in Nightingale Road. It follows the success of a scheme run by Horsham Freemasons between May and July, when over 350 meals were delivered. St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church in Horsham has been awarded a ÂŁ9,865 Heritage Stimulus Grant to pay for urgent repairs to the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boiler house roof. It is one of nearly 100 churches and cathedrals to share a ÂŁ13million emergency government grant, designed to support heritage sites that have suffered severe loss of income due to Covid. The Reverend Canon Lisa Barnett, Vicar of Horsham, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The roof has caused us a considerable headache as rainwater has caused

the boiler to stop several times. We now face a further financial challenge, as our boiler has been declared beyond repair and we are looking at options for a new heating system. We are fortunate to have a large congregation that has supported our wonderful building and our appeal over the summer raised almost ÂŁ50,000. But the months ahead will remain challenging.â&#x20AC;? The first phase of redevelopment work on Livingstone Road, off New Street, has started. Page Court, an outdated retirement scheme, will be replaced with 40 one and twobedroom flats for affordable rent and eight two and three-bedroom houses for social rent. The project is a partnership between Horsham District Council and housing association Saxon Weald. Phase two, which will include the demolition of three bungalows on Park Terrace East, is due to begin in January 2021. The George and Dragon pub in Dragons Green will be closed until 2021. Whistlestop Arts have secured funding of £1,000 from the Horsham District Council Community Fund, as well as £3,623 from the NET Coronavirus Fund at Sussex Community Foundation. Founded by Annalees Lim and Luna Russell, Whistlestop Arts delivers community arts programmes across Sussex and Surrey. The funding will enable it to deliver interactive arts, focused on those whose mental health and well-being has been impacted by Covid. Luna said: "We are developing audio talks that engage directly with older people across the Horsham District. We know how difficult it has been for people without interaction and wanted to develop a programme of activities that enable them to engage creatively at home.” Five episodes of the Whistlestop Talks will explore the local countryside and places of cultural interest, with special guests participating. Each episode will have an accompanying craft activity for participants. The series includes visits to Horsham Museum, Sussex Wildlife Trust at Woods Mill, Amberley Museum and Steyning Bookshop. Annalees and Luna will deliver talks on USB sticks to participants, along with a sound player and craft materials, and hope to have doorstep chats too. The Tapestry Club cares for vulnerable people in the Horsham District

The Tapestry Lunch Club has been hosting virtual tea parties for lonely people in the community during recent months. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Coronavirus Fund, the Club has also rented tablet devices for people without a computer, so all can attend the tea party online. The lunch club is a notfor-profit social enterprise offering a different kind of day support for small groups of older people in the community who would like to meet and socialise with others. It aims to create a warm, friendly environment within a host's home, where guests (2 - 5 per host) can be cared for to reduce anxiety, regain confidence and provide high quality replacement care for carers. YOUTH ECO FORUM GIVES A VOICE TO THE NEXT GENERATION

he Horsham Youth Eco Forum has been created as part of the Horsham Climate Cafe.

The forum offers a space for young environmentalists aged 11+ to meet weekly to discuss concerns and problemsolve in a creative way. Working in partnership with Sussex Green Living and the Climate Café, it enables young people to tackle eco-anxiety with eco-action and be an important part of the green community. AAH met members Catherine, Flora and Ellie, as well as Christ’s Hospital pupils Maddie, Max and Freddie, with the school strongly represented on the Youth Eco Forum. With the group currently meeting on Zoom, most of the photos are of Eco Rangers in the allotments at Christ’s Hospital.

Catherine: During lockdown, Horsham Climate Cafe (HCC) and Sussex Green Living (SGL) were forced into meeting online. One idea that came up was the creation of a forum for young people. Many of us are involved in climate action individually or through our schools and colleges, but are isolated from other like-minded young people. The idea was to bring us together and give us the space to speak about issues important to us and operate independently. Max: At Christ’s Hospital School, we have many environmentally-friendly initiatives, led by a team of Eco Rangers. These include litter picking, food waste projects and a drive to stop single-use plastic bottles in school, with pupils given a reusable bottle instead. Carrie Cort of Sussex Green Living visited the school for a second-hand clothes sale and when the Youth Eco Forum was set-up, asked if any of the Eco Rangers would join. Catherine: One of the cool things about the forum is that members have different interests with an environmental theme. It’s been great to meet new people and talk amongst ourselves.

Articles range from fast fashion to vegan cooking to biodiversity, written by members and guest contributors. The e-zine also includes

artwork and poetry. It encourages people to share their knowledge and interests and has helped us reach new members across the county. Flora: Carrie visited my school to talk about environmental issues and that inspired me to subscribe to SGL’s newsletter. When I read the e-zine by the Youth Eco Forum, I joined the group and contributed to the second edition. In future, I want to write about make-up products, as many are made with single-use plastics that end up in landfill or the oceans. I'm obsessed with sea life and hate seeing animals suffer, so want to promote eco-friendly alternatives. Max: We take part in community events too and several of us attended a Bio-Blitz at Rookwood. When new developments are built, it’s important they maintain the biodiversity of the area, so we logged what we found and submitted our findings to the local authorities. Ellie: The Bio-Blitz was interesting as there was so much to see. We had an expert with us who could name different species of birds,

spiders and insects that we found, as well as many trees and plants. Catherine: It was good for us to be represented at Rookwood, as it was difficult for young people to respond to the Council’s consultation about the proposed development. I searched online and there was a document about 300 pages long, explaining the plans. I wanted to comment, but felt I couldn't justify my response without reading everything they had written first. It was very inaccessible and didn't encourage young people to get involved in the process. Maddie: A positive aspect of the Forum is that it helps us make links with different community groups and schools. I was one of the Christ’s Hospital pupils involved in the Fridays for Future (FFF) march in Horsham in 2019, where we met people from other schools. Some of us have also been involved in the South-East Climate Alliance and even become Youth Climate Ambassadors through involvement with the Youth Climate Summit (YCS), which has inspired us to introduce new green initiatives at our own school.

Freddie: The School Council at CH led a campaign to review energy efficiency and worked with the maintenance staff to introduce cost effective lighting around the school site. We’ve replaced street lighting, with more efficient systems in classrooms and the Chapel. Maddie: We’ve also revived the school allotments. They were used long ago, but had been neglected for some time. During lockdown, a project involving pupils and staff saw fruit and vegetables grown there once again. It has helped us think creatively about using the space and increased awareness of sustainable foods. Max: As an YCS Ambassador, I had the chance to interview with Peter Wohlleben, author of The Hidden Life of Trees, for the Youth Climate Summit. Being involved in that has given me interesting opportunities.

Catherine: It's easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of the problems we face and think that you can't do anything alone. Whatever you do, it can feel like just a drop in the ocean, so what’s the point? Whilst it’s true that you can only do so much alone, by coming together, we can find ways to reduce the human impact on climate change and make a positive difference. We take great inspiration from people like Greta Thunberg, as she confronts world leaders with uncomfortable truths. Flora: People think these issues are only going to be a problem for future generations, so they don’t act now. But it's closer to home than what people realise. We are already seeing the damage we are causing and it’s important to protect the planet, because it's not ours to exploit.

Maddie: It feels like we have lost a little momentum because of lockdown, which is frustrating. Lots of people were talking about climate issues and taking positive steps. Because of Covid, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve held meetings online recently, so we keep in touch, but it doesn't have the same feel to it. We hope next year we can embark on more exciting projects. Catherine: We are reaching out to the community. Crickmay allowed us to put green-themed murals and artwork in the window of a vacant unit in East Street, Horsham. We have also been given a ÂŁ1000 grant from the Argus Appeal Fund at Sussex Community Foundation to run an outdoor activities and eco-education day for young people, hopefully in Spring 2021. This will include workshops on environmental themes, eco-friendly food and encourage young people to engage in the great outdoors.

Freddie: It is difficult to attract new members, otherwise there would be more of us. Students who are at an age when they might get involved in activism are often busy with exams, so it can be a question of finding the time. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also the case that people do not know how to help as an individual. That where a group like this is more powerful. Ellie: I have asked people at school to join, but most say they are busy. Lots of people have watched programmes like Blue Planet and been affected by it, as people love nature and want to help wildlife. So, I hope that more people will be inspired to get involved.

Sadly, Owen died of a brain tumour 4 years ago when he was just 7 years old. In his last few months, Owen was supported by Chestnut Tree House childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospice where he made precious memories with his family that they will cherish forever.

akefields will embark on one of the most extensive refurbishments in its long and illustrious history in the New Year.

The family jewellers expects to be closed for six weeks as it creates a contemporary new look, providing an improved experience for customers. The refurbishment includes a new bar (with a menu offering everything from freshly brewed coffee to sparkling wine) and a larger area devoted to Rolex. Melanie Wakefield, who co-owns the business with brother Dominic, said: “Wakefields became an official Rolex retailer in 2012 and it’s been such a successful partnership that Rolex has requested more space.”

A PART OF HORSHAM Wakefields has become synonymous with the town, having been founded in 1911. John Wakefield, Melanie’s greatgrandfather, was senior watchmaker at Cramp’s before setting up his own shop. As well as clocks, watches and jewellery, he sold gifts and oddities, whilst during the First World War, munition shells were made there. Wakefields moved to its current location at 11 West Street in 1935 and helped during the Second World War too, making spitfire dials. Since then, the business has faced recessions and changing trends, with the current climate being among the most challenging. Melanie says: “To be successful in these times, you need to elevate your bricks and mortar and create an experience. You can buy almost anything online, with Rolex being one of the few exceptions, so it’s important to offer something different.” “High street businesses need to engage with customers and provide something they cannot get sat behind a computer. That is why we’re seeing an evolution towards “destination” outlets. It’s a huge challenge, as you also need to embrace the internet and promote products online to engage customers. We launched a new website in June and it helped us greatly during lockdown.” “We are hugely grateful for the support of our loyal customers, who have been incredible. When we opened our doors after lockdown, we had people coming in, wanting to support independent, family-run local businesses.”

KEEP ON ROCKING SUE GRAHAM’S DEVOTION TO VINTAGE ROCKING HORSES

mong the many amazing artefacts at the V&A Museum in London is a wooden rocking horse dating back to the early 1600s. It’s the earliest bow rocking horse to have survived and is believed to have been used by a young King Charles I. Nearly three centuries later, another monarch triggered a boom in the popularity of rocking horses. Queen Victoria arrived on a dapple-grey horse for her visit to J. Collinson and Sons, a Liverpool rocking horse company. From that day forth, they only ever used grey paint for their products! The heyday of traditional rocking horse makers has long passed, as children were enticed instead by exciting new toys, from bicycles to computers. Yet there remains a market driven not only by nostalgia, but also for quality craftsmanship. Sue Graham is among those with a passion for restoring the horses, focusing on the famous Collinson brand.

“Having done some furniture restoration before, I had thought about working on a rocking horse but wasn’t sure if I had the skills to do it,” said Sue. “Finally, I bought a small Collinson horse on eBay and it was in such bad condition that I had no choice but to strip it down to the bare wood and see what was underneath. That’s where my interest started.” “Some models were very expensive and targeted at the children of wealthy families. But Collinson made a more affordable horse. There’s was a workhorse; the cob of the trade! They sold in large numbers and many have survived. Because of that, they’re not the most desirable name for collectors and are relatively cheap to buy.” “However, most are in a poor condition, as they haven't been used in decades. They might have been kept for future generations, but ended up sitting in a shed or attic, gradually deteriorating.”

PULLING THE REINS Today, there is a demand for restored horses. They might not be popular with most children, but do make a special gift for those with a passion for horses. They also make for interesting decorative feature for the home. New models are expensive, so restoration can be a more affordable alternative. However, Sue says there can sometimes be a huge amount of work required to bring an old horse up to scratch.

They get bashed around by excited children, or placed too close to walls and bash against them. Saddlery is often missing or needs re-upholstering. my own horse, because it's very physical work, but wanted to be able to replace smaller parts, such as a jaw or leg, if I needed to. That’s been very helpful.” “People don’t realise how much work goes into it. Even the hair of the mane and tails are real horse hair, which isn’t cheap. But the most time-consuming part of the process is painting. Once you’re down to bare wood, you need to apply several layers of gesso, made with a rabbit skin glue, which hides blemishes and treats the wood. Once that has been sanded down to a smooth surface, it leaves a beautiful marble effect. I’m always

tempted to leave it like that, as it has a translucent shine. But for a proper Collinson restoration, you need to prime it and give it a dapple-grey finish. I can't quite bring myself to do a brown horse, as it just doesn't work as well!”

Sue’s passion isn’t born out of a sense of nostalgia, as she didn’t have a rocking horse of her own growing up. Instead, it’s inspired by a love of horses. She has ridden since childhood, but that was largely curtailed by an accident five years ago. After fracturing five vertebrae in a fall, Sue took heed and swapped galloping for a gentle rocking motion! Still, Sue believes her interest in all things equine helps with restoration work, as she is familiar with the facial features of the animals. Whilst not actively pursuing projects, Sue does take commissions. One client asked for an imitation of a racehorse, which was fortunately a grey! Another project was to restore a rocking horse for a girl called Verity, who made national headlines when only a toddler by riding her beloved Shetland pony, Noodles. Both clients were delighted with the result, although Sue’s style isn’t for everyone. “It’s difficult working to somebody else's brief,” she said. “Some want an authentic look, with everything looking as it would when it was made. That means restoring the original paint and ironwork and creating an antique look.” “This is an enjoyable retirement hobby for me and not something I do for a living. I like to restore a rocking horse so that it looks new, ready to be used and loved again. One of the reasons I work with Collinson horses is that they’re not antique, but vintage. I’m enhancing a possible antique of the future.”

Number of Challenges in the Housing Market In my December blogs, I normally sum up the year and look forward to what is coming in the year ahead. But I think we all know how this year has been and next year’s hope is simply for a much improved year for us all. Please! Whatever your political outlook, I think we can all agree that the government is under a substantial amount of pressure with regards to the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and Brexit remains a huge issue which is dominating time, resources and attention. I fully appreciate the importance of tackling these concerns and the major toll they are having on the health – physically, mentally and financially – of the UK population. However, there are also a number of other areas which the government can ill-afford to ignore across the housing and mortgage market.

Beyond Christmas... Keith specialises in Raku ware, an ancient Japanese ceramic technique. Pots are glazed and removed from the kiln while red hot and plunged into sawdust.
