Contemporary Virgins For the sĂŠries with the mask I wanted to create contemporary virgins inspired by McQueen. We wanted to go to the dark side of the virginal and catholic aspect. The pictures were taken in an ancient church here in Lyon. Someone told me that the picture in color reminds him of Egypt, I like this idea as well. I like to see the models as figures of a spiritual dark mind.

Complicated Intimacy I started taking pictures of myself naked as I didn’t have a model. It is complicated to find people who want to take the postures that I have in mind. Maybe because I really want to produce something very intimate and to show a mood. When I take a bath, there is a mood in the bathroom and the idea was to show it, not in a very sexual way, I like to think that the séries is more sensual than sexual, a sensitive sexuality maybe. I think, i’m going to continue this series, maybe in a different way, but still searching for intimacy. Now that i found some models to photograph, I think I will have more faces in the pictures, but maybe that will remove the anonymity, so maybe I won’t :)

Who are you and where are you from?

It seems that you prefer film photography. Why is that?

Hi! I am from Indonesia. I was born on July 1989 in Serang, a small town that is beautiful and has kind people. Now I am working for a chemical factory. Previously I spent 7 years in Yogyakarta for my study and in that city I also learned a lot about photography.

I do not want to debate whether I prefer to use film, or if I hate digital. It is about taste and what kind of photos you want to produce. The process and the resulting photos is more important, not what camera you use. If someone told that using film is more experimental … oh, come on! So is digital. To me, no matter what kind of camera is used, I emphasize on the concept of photography. Basically, both of them has good and bad aspects. I can say that the best kind of camera is the camera that is in your hand. If someone took beautiful photos with a phone camera, the result would still be good.

How did you get in to photography? It started when I found a family photo album in my grandpa’s house. When I was 15 years old, he showed me his camera collection and gave me a Yashica Electro 35. After graduating from senior high school, I continued my study in Yogyakarta. There a learned a lot about photography. I joined a photography community. I remember there was a friend that lent me a Nikon FM10 and taught me deeper about photography. It was the beginning and I became addicted to using film.

18

Digital is important in the context of working. If you worked for a magazine, TV station, or whatever, would film has a place? I do not think so. Especially in my country. But to me film has feeling that is more specific and intimate. I love the combination of color, light, and contrasts that are produced by film. It looks honest, explicit, and full of surprise. Film teaches me to be more selective in what object I take. When I hang out with friends, I always bring my film pocket camera. I have no idea why, but it makes me better.

How is your creative process? It is a difficult question. It should be asked to a professional photographer. There is no specific creative method behind the making of my photos. Usually when I have an idea or inspiration, I make a note. Sometimes a pack of cigarettes and a cup of coffee helps me to find an inspiration. An inspiration can come from anywhere, and usually I find it in music and film. For instance, with my photo about gender, “Double Vision”, it started when I watched “A League of Their Own”, a film about the struggle of a woman and her baseball team. Then I got the words “double vision” when I listened a song. The talents in the photos are friends of mine and most of my photos are portraits. My friends told me that my photos are contemporary, although I do not even know what contemporary photography is. There are a lot of ways to get the creative process going. I once took photos of she-males, and prior to that I had conversations with them and followed their daily activities. In the end I had a lot of questions like “is becoming she-males are their decision or not” and “do she-males have a right to belong to a religion or not”. In that stage the process of creativity is happening. So, in my opinion the process of creativity will come naturally when you understand what you will take. Do you have a favorite series at the moment? “Hate the Taste”. It was my first time taking photos of a nude woman. Full of experiments.

I think of my photos as a visual diary or as visual poems. Something that refers to the world around me in a oblique and indirect way. On daily walks with my camera, I see and am drawn to things that are mundane, neutral and maybe often overlooked. A water stain, things that have been d iscarded, benign and in-beween spaces, the time just b efore or after something happens. These things, spaces and e nvironments become vehicles for an exploration—questioning elusiveness and impermanence. The photo becomes a metaphor for complex feelings and sensations. I have a masters degree in photography from the University of Wisconsin and live and work on the east coast close to NYC. Timothy Pyle Fairfield, CT

Lukasz Wierzbowski is no rookie to photography. He has released two books in 2010 and 2013, appeared in a bunch of exhibitons and magazines, and now he has graced us with a few answers to our questions.

WHO ARE YOU, AND HOW DID YOU GET IN TO PHOTOGRAPHY? I READ SOMEWHERE, THAT YOUR FATHER PLAYED A PART IN THAT …

I’m a 32-year-old photographer currently working and living in Wroclaw. My father introduced me to photography when I was a kid by teaching me how to operate my first camera. During high school I was more into making short movies with a VHS camcorder.   I came back to photography while studying psychology, and it became my favorite pastime.

I SHARE YOUR LOVE FOR ANALOG PHOTO GRAPHY. DO YOU EVER GO DIGITAL?

I did at a very beginning, but soon switched to film, and I haven’t used digital since.

YOUR IMAGES HAVE A SPONTANEOUS FEEL TO THEM. BUT HOW IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? It’s quite simple as I just try to use any given space in an active way. Before I start taking photos, I ask the model to forget about typical posing and just be natural and able to embrace all the body’s imperfections. I only give overall instructions or demonstrate a certain pose, then capture the result.

WE KNOW YOU BEST FROM FLICKR … HAVE YOU EVER DONE COMMERCIAL WORK? Yes, it has happened few times over the years.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO THESE DAYS? Tame Impala, Bob Moses, and Son Lux–just to name a few.

WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU?

I’m in the process of gathering works for my upcoming book.
