THE CONCEPTS OF AARHUS SYMPOSIUM
THE CONCEPTS OF AARHUS SYMPOSIUM
AARHUS SYMPOSIUM Aarhus Symposium is an event of extraordinary class with the aim of connecting students, the leaders of tomorrow, with today’s leaders and key decision-makers. To accomplish this, an annual symposium is held in the inspiring surroundings of Aarhus University. Here, speakers are invited to share their insights and experiences regarding a theme of relevance to leaders of both today and tomorrow. The participating students and speakers engage in dialogues and discussions, achieving the main purpose of the organisation: to connect leaders of today with leaders of tomorrow. As such, Aarhus Symposium constitutes a visionary learning space for students and top leaders alike.
AARHUS SYMPOSIUM FOCUS Aarhus Symposium Focus zooms in on a national perspective on the overall theme of Aarhus Symposium. At Aarhus Symposium Focus, leaders of today and leaders of tomorrow engage in a discussion about a topic reflecting some of Denmark’s most important challenges.
FOCUS
Aarhus Symposium Focus is an inspiring event that takes place on Monday in the week of Aarhus Symposium. Speakers at Aarhus Symposium Focus allow students to gain key insights on a theme of national interest, offering the most curious students to delve deeper into the theme of Aarhus Symposium. At Aarhus Symposium Focus, speakers with different backgrounds in terms of education and work experience engage in dialogue and debate orchestrated by an experienced moderator.
AARHUS SYMPOSIUM CHALLENGE Aarhus Symposium Challenge is an essay competition with the purpose of ensuring that the seats for Aarhus Symposium and Aarhus Symposium Focus are given to the most ambitious students. This year, for the first time, all participants of Aarhus Symposium and Aarhus Symposium Focus contributed with their thoughts by submitting essays. The students with the most innovative and extraordinary essays have the unique opportunity to engage in a dialogue in Leaders’ Forum with the top leader who has proposed the challenge which the students have taken up. This is an exclusive chance to discuss global issues with true leaders of today. The student with the most outstanding essay will be rewarded with the Aarhus Symposium Award on stage at Aarhus Symposium.

LEADING THROUGH CHANGE THE THEME OF AARHUS SYMPOSIUM 2017
T
he world of tomorrow will always be different from the one we know today. Change encompasses nearly every aspect of life, keeping the world in a constant state of fluctuation. On one hand, leaders hold the power to facilitate change; on the other hand, they are faced with trends that exceed them and which can invade entire industries or even nations. At Aarhus Symposium 2017, we seek to explore the interplay between following the trends of today and setting the agenda of tomorrow. As technological developments advance at an exponential pace, the everyday lives of people in all corners of the world change. The evolution of information aggregation increases market transparency, giving consumers better conditions than ever for finding the best products at the best prices. However, with the exciting opportunities brought about by Big Data and digital marketing, companies too can strengthen their competitive position, customising their products to the masses - even as consumers become increasingly diverse. Globalisation and international cooperation have moved countries closer, enabling firms to grow beyond borders. Leaders must navigate in an increasingly intricate world, when setting the course towards new promising markets. Global developments continuously reshape the foundation of society and leaders must ensure that these developments come to benefit the individual citizen. Bridging the gap between corporate interests and the wellbeing of citizens is vital to securing a sustainable platform for society to grow on. As the world becomes increasingly complex, so does decision-making. Leaders walk a fine and twisted line between creating change in their organisations and reacting to change in their surroundings. But when is the right time to adapt or to create change? After all, being innovative does not ensure success, and a first mover is not necessarily better positioned than a fast follower. Change is often linked to uncertainty and ambiguity; however, it is when leading through times of change that true leaders stand out – rising above the immediate challenges and turning them into new opportunities. This year, the speakers at Aarhus Symposium will share their perspectives on change. Based on their past experiences and current positions, they will address the developments shaping the future. Should leaders aim at predicting the future or at creating it? Questions like these are essential to leaders of tomorrow as well. Although the world is changing, change itself will endure.

evelopments in international cooperation and technology have led to exciting opportunities, as people and businesses become increasingly connected. With globalisation, businesses can expand to geographical areas previously out of reach. In addition, technological advancements not only enable leaders to enrich current markets, but also to pursue entirely new industries and sectors. However, these developments also pose challenges, as competition in home markets is intensified. How can leaders grasp the opportunities of new markets while accommodating to increased competition at home?

Not only is it often legally required, but modern consumers also expect businesses to obtain economic growth by sustainable means. Bridging the gap between corporate interests and the wellbeing of citizens is vital to securing a sustainable platform for society to grow on. he evolution of technology has eased communication, increased productivity, and continues to raise the standard of living across the world. Companies now have access to inventions as Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things; the full potential of which seems incomprehensible. For consumers, this has fostered new demands, which form the basis of completely new types of businesses. On a larger scale, technology will undeniably also affect the way we organise our society. Workplaces must not only welcome human labour but also intelligent robots. How can leaders best seize the opportunities brought about by new technologies?

With Vivino, Theis Søndergaard challenges the traditional wine retail industry by providing easy access to relevant information about wine, making wine retail more transparent to consumers. Within very few years, Søndergaard became the leader of a company that changes the way consumers select and buy wine across countries. Today, Vivino is an example of how the increasing consumer demand for easy access to useful information about products and suppliers has created a whole new market.

arhus Symposium Challenge is the students’ chance to truly engage in this year’s Aarhus Symposium and Aarhus Symposium Focus. Through the essay competition, three sub-topics of this year’s theme, ”Leading Through Change”, encourage students and speakers to inspire and engage in dialogues with each other. Starting off in 2013 as an extension to the ’first come, first served’-based Sign-up Day, Aarhus Symposium Challenge has now developed into the only way to sign up for both Aarhus Symposium and Aarhus Symposium Focus. Hereby, Aarhus Symposium Challenge ensures attendance from the most ambitious students from all universities in Denmark.

LEADERS’ FORUM AARHUS SYMPOSIUM CHALLENGE 2017
L
eaders’ Forum is a unique opportunity for you to engage with the leader whose challenge you have addressed in your essay. On the day of Aarhus Symposium, an intimate and informal setting lays the basis for the exclusive one-hour session where you will meet a leader of today. Here, you have the chance to discuss the ideas presented in your essay and gain valuable insights into how leaders tackle challenges when facing change. Prior to the session, our Knowledge Partner, McKinsey & Company, will host a workshop for all Leaders’ Forum participants. STUDENTS GETTING CLOSE TO LEADERS OF TODAY Laura Dzurna, Andreas Holm Nielsen, and Matias Teglgaard Caldera were among the 12 students, who submitted the best essays and took part in Leaders’ Forum 2016. Here, the students had a unique opportunity to discuss their thoughts in an intimate and informal setting with one of today’s top leaders. We met with the three of them after Aarhus Symposium 2016 to hear about their reasons for participating in Aarhus Symposium Challenge as well as their experiences with Leaders’ Forum. TOOLS FOR THE FUTURE For Laura Dzurna, MSc in Brand and Communications Management at Copenhagen Business School, it was her very first encounter with Aarhus Symposium and Leaders’ Forum. Despite having participated in other symposia in Austria, Laura was triggered by the Challenge Topics at Aarhus Symposium. Laura challenged and qualified for an informal session with Jimmy Maymann, President at AOL Content & Consumer Brands, to discuss the influence of digitalisation. In her essay, she addressed how digital media should focus on innovation by using new technologies such as Virtual Reality.

AARHUS SYMPOSIUM FOCUS 2017
GLOBALISATION IN REVERSE - THE DANISH RESPONSE THE THEME OF AARHUS SYMPOSIUM FOCUS 2017
How can Denmark prosper as a small open economy in a closing world?
T
he foundation of global trade is changing. After decades of increasing economic integration, Western societies are experiencing a backlash against globalisation. As countries work towards national rather than global agendas, the international society is in danger of facing change in its most treacherous form; when progress is suddenly eroded or even destroyed. This leaves Danish policymakers and corporate leaders with a pressing question: Would Denmark be able to withstand such changes?
It is unlikely that this question will remain hypothetical much longer. Countries who once championed globalisation are now turning against it. The USA has elected a President who vows to put America first, and Great Britain voted to leave the EU. In many Western societies, large groups of citizens feel left behind in a rapidly changing world. They are not convinced by economists who argue that globalisation has increased the general standard of living across social groups. This has led to public support for protectionist policies which may ultimately prove harmful to nations who choose to implement them. How should policymakers address similar sentiments among Danish citizens?
These developments constitute a grave threat to the Danish economy, which has flourished in a globalised world. However, while Danes generally perceive globalisation positively, international trade requires other countries to trade with. Many of our largest trade partners depend less on us than we do on them, and should they resort to protectionist policies, the consequences are likely to be severe for the Danish economy. How can we continue to prosper from international trade if our trade partners wish to limit it?
Successfully addressing the challenges of being a small open economy in a closing world requires a combined effort from many different stakeholders. At Aarhus Symposium Focus 2017, a panel of competent speakers with diverse academic backgrounds and experiences will discuss these challenges. We encourage you to join the discussion on October 30, 2017.

AARHUS SYMPOSIUM At Aarhus Symposium 2016, we invited fourteen leaders and key decision-makers to give their perspectives on the theme: ”The Art of Power”. This year, twelve well-esteemed speakers join the intriguing talks and debates on “Leading Through Change”.
COOKING WITH ARLA
COOKING WITH ARLA On May 2, the theme of this year’s Aarhus Symposium, “Leading Through Change”, was announced, and students were invited to the opening event “Embracing the Future with Arla”, which included both presentations, workshops, and mingling. From this event, Arla Foods hand-picked a few students to join them at “Cooking with Arla” held in Arla Foods’ headquarters in Viby.
Covering their usual outfits with red aprons, senior level managers from Arla Foods warmly welcome seven students for “Cooking with Arla” in the remarkable atrium of Arla Foods’ headquarters. After a walk through the lively office spaces, the students are led to Karolines Køkken, where all is set for the dinner preparation. In the company of senior level managers from Arla Foods, the seven students eagerly begin cooking a delicious three-course dinner. Before participating in “Cooking with Arla”, each of the seven students took part in ”Embracing the Fu-
ture with Arla”, wherefrom they were hand-picked by senior level managers from Arla Foods. Here, 100 students participated in the discussion about the coming challenges of the ever-changing dairy market. The event was kicked off with a presentation by Hanne Søndergaard, Executive Vice President & CMO. Drawing on experiences from Arla Foods, she described how a company can thrive in volatile and uncertain markets: “The main point is that when you are leading in an environment where there is a lot of change, having a very clear purpose is very important. Also, not planning too much, but being willing to experiment, is important.”
Kenn Würts Wils (right) was one of the selected students for “Cooking with Arla”. Here, he is enjoying a cheerful conversation with Michael Regner, Finance Manager at Arla.

Chef Anders Kleemeyer Kiil is helping Mathilda Weibel (left) and Signe Hvid Paulsen (centre) preparing a delicious dinner.
The presentation was followed by four intimate workshops, each one presenting a different challenge that Arla Foods faces regarding change.
“You need to hear the young people first because they are the ones defining how products will be consumed in the future.” - Søren Bill, Director of Commercial Operation Int. Søren Bill, Director of Commercial Operation Int., and Maria Apostolaki Johansen, Senior Incubation Manager, facilitated a workshop that concerned how companies can innovate and disrupt themselves from within. During the workshop, he especially highlighted the role of the younger generation: “You need to hear the young people first because they are the ones defining how products will be consumed in the future.”
Back at Karolines Køkken, the air is filled with a pleasant aroma as the students and the senior level managers are ready to start their dinner. The mood is cheerful, and judging by the students’ responses, this type of creative mingling session is to their taste: “It is nice and informal, so you can be yourself and just have a good time. But at the same time, you also get the opportunity to learn more about Arla and the career opportunities they offer”, says Signe Hvid Paulsen, Master’s student in International Business. Her last point is also emphasised by another participant, Kenn Würtz Wils, BA student in Economics and Business Administration: “We all know about the part of Arla with milk, butter, and other dairy products. But the administration of it; the corporation Arla. That we did not know. This type of event really helps us understand how a modern corporation functions.”
