It feels as though the whole town turns out for Hertford’s annual Christmas gala – shopping at the pop-up market stalls, enjoying festive food and drink, fairground rides and entertainment and finally squeezing as near as they can to the entertainment stage in Salisbury Square to join in the countdown to the festive lights being switched on by the Mayor (this year at 6pm).

By far the biggest feature in a year-round programme of events organised by Love Hoddesdon BID in conjunction with Broxbourne Council, this year’s event will take place on a Sunday for the first time. This full day event runs the length of the High Street and features shopping, entertainment, food and drink and a Father Christmas parade. You can meet Santa at Hertfordshire Zoo every weekend from 30th November as well as on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th December.
Entry to Santa’s Grotto where you can share your Christmas wishes with the all-important man of the season, receive a small gift and capture the moment with a keepsake photo, is included within the price of your day ticket.
The zoo hosts a whole range of festivities in the lead-up to Christmas. Hear seasonal talks from zookeepers about some of your favourite animals, watch as the animals explore their Christmas-themed enrichment toys, and look out for The Grinch who will be roaming the zoo on Saturdays spreading his own brand of holiday humour.

Tewinbury Farm
From Thursday 28th November to Wednesday 1st January
This festive season Welwyn’s Tewinbury Farm will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland as the 700-acre farm hosts its Farmer Christmas Light Trail and Grotto.
Starting at the historic main farmhouse, the magic begins in the Festive Garden before the twinkling woodland trail guides you through the Enchanted Archway and
Cathedral of Lights, past Santa’s Sleigh and into the illuminated Field of Lights where the farm’s trees, adorned with fairy lights will cast a beautiful festive glow.
From there make your way down the Rainbow Road, a circular tunnel of light, along the Snow Path from where you’ll see the farm covered in a white blanket of snowflakes, past the Reindeer Run and Presents Galore installations.
Passing by the Secret Fairy Village you’ll arrive at Santa’s Grotto where Farmer Christmas awaits with gifts for little ones.
A cosy Christmas tent will offer seasonal food and festive drinks.
The event starts on Thursday 28th November and will be open from Thursdays to Sundays from 3.30pm to 8.30pm.
During Christmas week, from 23rd December to 1st January the trail will be open every day with the exception of Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Anyone who’s struggled to fit five or more feet of Christmas tree into their car in December will appreciate a brilliant service offered by the local charity Mudlarks.
In December in conjunction with Festive Trees, an environmentallyfriendly company based on a family-run farm at Watton at Stone, Mudlarks offers an annual Christmas tree service.
Simply go online, select your preferred delivery day, size of Nordmann Fir tree, add delivery (prices vary by location) and wait for it to arrive! Trees start at £38 and
deliveries are offered between Monday 2nd and Friday 20th December.
Delivery is generally within a ten-mile radius of Hertford although if you’re further afield do ask for a delivery quote. There’s even a recycling service which gives you an option to have your tree collected after 6th January for an additional £5.
Proceeds from the tree sales go towards the running of Mudlarks projects which support adults and young people with learning disabilities and mental health concerns.

On Christmas Night is the title of Ware Choral Society’s annual Christmas concert. It will take place at Ware’s Drill Hall in Amwell End on Saturday 7th December at 7.30pm. The concert launches the society’s second season under its new director Rosie Howarth and will showcase the very best of seasonal music by living British composers.
The main musical contributor is Bob Chilcott, who published his eight arrangements of mainly traditional carols in 2011. The other substantial piece, Cecilia McDowall’s 2002 cantata Christus Natus Est is also based on traditional carols. Both were arranged for participation of a children’s choir, and Ware Choral Society will be joined by two for this performance – Thundridge CE Primary School and Ponsbourne St Mary’s CE Primary School.
