Academic thesis design

An Architectural Thesis entitled Under-Exposed proposed a network of six integrated and independent site-specific interventions, each designed to expose Manhattan’s abandoned subway stations. This network of interventions would selectively expose portions of the city’s previously buried history, systems, infrastructure. Furthermore, it will serve to re-define the way people experience the urban landscape by creating a more inclusive urban experience, that integrates the hidden (active and inactive) layers of the city within the everyday public realm. This project was presented as my architectural graduate thesis at the University of Washington, and has not yet been realized. However, dialogue with the New York City MTA Arts for Transit department remains ongoing. dates webs

Professional urban design

The redevelopment of the Yang Shu Pu Power Plant was the first international project for DLR Group in China, and incorporated elements of urban design, architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, historic preservation, economic development, energy policy, environmental protection and energy production. The overall design strategy was authored by a five-person integrated design team and incorporated a variety of multi-scalar green technologies into the foundation of a 250,000 square meter mixed-use and net-zero campus. The project site occupies a 141,984 square meter tract of land along the Huang Pu River in Shanghai, China -- and the project design has been approved by the client and city planners. dates webs

Professional master planning

The Google Kirkland Campus Master Plan is an integrated vision for future campus expansion. The overall Master Planning strategy was designed to highlight multi-scalar campus opportunities and forecast development opportunities over the next 20-years. At each scale, recommendations were organized around the themes of: Connection, Community & Activation. Physical connections would be created to improve mufti-scalar circulation, while community and activation strategies would be implemented to enhance public relations and encourage social interaction campus-wide. Currently Campus Expansion Phase II, and the Phase I & II connecting bridge have been approved by the client and city planners. Plans to adopt future Phases III - VI are currently pending. dates webs

Independent interactive design

Amidst the Everyday is an interactive network of digital installations, designed to unveil unseen aspects of the urban landscape. Through the use of QR codes, linked to web-hosted photographs this project reveals forgotten buildings, alternative streetscapes and unseen infrastructure scattered throughout the city. The intent of this project is to create a more engaging urban experience by sharing elements of the unseen urban environment (in an digitally interactive context), and encouraging people to explore and experience the city in a new way. Any person with smartphone or a tablet will be able to scan-to-see a single unseen image at any given QR marked location, where both the image and its context can be experienced at the same time. dates webs

photographic research These photographic samples represent an ongoing investigations into the post-industrial condition in the United States. Despite their estranged relationship with market forces hoping to redefine their use, these decommissioned structures are significant in their abandonment as historic remnants of an endangered industrialized empire. Furthermore, these photos highlight a profound level of social activity and sub-cultural value inherent to these structures. I do believe that we have more to learn from the subtext of post-industrial decay than current architectural practice suggests, and hopefully this ongoing investigation will continue to inform an progressive dialogue on the value of these structures in contemporary / future design. dates August 2006 - Current webs aaronasis.com/industrial-ruins aaronasis.com/urban-ruins arcadenw.org/article/abandonment-dormancy

architectural design The current North Seattle Recycling and Disposal Station (NRDS) site occupies 100,000 feet of sloping terrain between public open spaces, single-family residences, transit thoroughfares and small-scaled commercial/ industrial operations. The combination of these contextual traits, prompted an early “arching solution, designed to embrace the severe grade of the site, and integrate the structure into the mixed fabric of the surrounding neighborhood. The structure itself will be anchored into the earth with a modest profile, and will provide public access to/through the surrounding grounds. Furthermore, the NRDS is designed to provide public access to the inner workings of the facility, which consist of trash tipping floors, haulers, compaction and trash removal. dates webs

architectural design The site for the Watermark Private Art Gallery occupies a parcel of waterfront land that measures 240’x120’. The program for the site calls for a private gallery space. The location of the site and the nature of its program prompted the integration of an industrial gantry crane into an architectural solution. The crane would aid in the construction of the gallery structure, as well as in the loading, off-loading and relocation of art throughout the site. The gallery itself consists of a lower level gallery, an upper level entry atrium and a public rooftop terrace. Furthermore, the upper level consists of an artists residence land executive office space in an effort to fully integrate use, program, and context into a singular architectural solution. dates webs

International community design

In each of these community design studios, student teams from University of Washington travelled to the Netherlands, Taiwan and Japan respectively. Students formed interdisciplinary teams with local activists, professors, university students and local residents to generate public dialogue with local community groups. The intent of these outreach initiatives was to work with local residents on the development of community revitalization initiatives -- that ranged from the activation of historic city centers, to post disaster neighborhood revitalization. The cross-cultural nature of these each one of these studio projects challenged professional, personal and cultural ideals, but each resulted in an incredible willingness to share, learn and create in an interdisciplinary setting. dates webs

Photographic urban documentation

These documentary style photographs represent an ongoing documentation of the underground urban condition, in major urban centers around the world. These photos also served as the conceptual catalyst and historic framework for my architectural thesis. An eerie calm over the city whole. A whole of environment alien to the general public. A whole of structure aging in the darkness. A lone frontier of solitude amidst the chaos of urbanity The intent of these photos is to provide a poetic glimpse into the historically significant and seldom-experienced beauty of the clandestine urban landscapes beneath our cities. Despite these sentiments, this collection exposes clear disconnects between beauty, accessibility and human occupation. dates webs

Photographic creative documentation

These photographic samples feature images captured and created from cities all over the world. The intent of these collections is to share unorthodox (visual) insights into the experience of being in these cities. Each collection represents a unique/specific photographic technique whereby the creative inspiration is color and texture. The resultant assemblies combine various elements of an everyday urban experience into a series of photographic compositions and/or an visually abstract urban reinterpretations. The individual images associated with the collection on this page (also) continue to serve as travel memoirs, exotic experiences and vivid keepsakes -- without excessive technical rigor. dates webs

temporary installations These site-specific installations hope to redefine our collective standards of appreciation by featuring the qualities and materials of an existing urban condition or circumstance -- and by accentuating their respective narratives as they pertain to the understated or underappreciated elements of their everyday context. Each installation is a temporary creative work that is suggestively derived from the existing characteristics of a specific locale. The intent of each installation is to intellectualize, analyze, identify, spatialize and then artistically render/ accentuate the nuances of the installation site (indoor or outdoor) -- in an effort to facilitate interactive interest by passers-by, via emphasizing a meaningful relationship to a broader spatial context, through the use of sculptural materials. dates webs

permanent installations Installation art is a means by which creative work can be is incorporated into everyday life. Through a variety of different mediums, these permanent installations aspire to expand our perceptions of building use, streetscapes narratives and/or the everyday urban landscape -- through accentuating the past, unseen and/ or presenting the image of the city from a nontraditional vantage point. The intent of these samples of permanently installed installation art is to inform public curiosity and promote increased awareness in the urban realm, by showcasing the lesser visible elements of the built environment in an interactive context -- where both the public art and an everyday urban phenomenon and its respective context can be experienced at the same time. dates webs

furniture collections Timeless utility and an ever-changing collection of recycled materials. These pieces of furniture aspire to be functional works of art that are beautiful in their materiality, simplicity and craft. Each piece of furniture is designed and assembled using 100% recycled materials, inspired by locally salvaged woods and expired pieces furniture. The availability of these materials is dependent on the ever-changing nature of our surrounding environment while the collection and assembly are reflective of a desire to integrate the source and story of each object into the final narrative for the finished piece. These samples represent furniture designed and assembled from 2008-2011. However, my investigations in material use and assemblages of furniture pieces is ongoing. dates webs
