PRESIDENT MESSAGE WINNING BIG WITH THE PAF!

GABRIEL HERNANDEZ President

The PAF, its members and sponsors are all coming off the high of victory after the Florida Print Awards and the PAF Golf Classic on July 21th. That is usually the case after our mid-year celebrations, but this year the feeling is more positive. Some might say that the good vibes are attributable to the Golf Classic being moved to the fantastic Grande Lakes golf course, or to the upgraded menu and production value of the awards banquet. This is partly true, but I like to think that in addition to the better experience our members are having at our events, they are noticing the association’s new focus on member benefits.

PAF members will continue to see the new focus on benefits through efforts of the PAF Membership Committee. Newsletters, postcards and site visits will become the norm. If you did not know what benefits the PAF offers you, these communications and visits will make sure that you will. Every month, we will highlight a benefit offered by the association and provide clear details on how you can take advantage of them. If you have any questions about PAF benefits, please call us at 407-240-8009 and we will be happy to help you. Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 Golf Classic. The first-place team included David Sambo, Sean Toomey, Bill Szczerbacki and Mark Kannenberg. Just missing out of the top spot was John Black, Jack Ballard, Jeanie Harvey and Jennifer Larson. The third-place team included Mark Peterson, Mike Waldron, Harvey Reid and Mike Thomas. Visit flprint.org for the winners list and photos. The Florida Print Awards were once again a special night. Our big winners were, Color Express Inc. “Best of Show Division I”, Associated Printing Productions, Inc. “Best of Show Division II” and Southeastern “Best of show Division III”. Southeastern also brought home the Golden Flamingo! Congratulations to all our winners! Visit flprint.org to see the complete winners list and photos. The award presentations were followed by the Mac Papers Casino night. Thank you to Mac Papers for their sponsorship. Without you, this event would not be possible! Thanks also to all our sponsors for their generous support of this event and the entire print industry. And finally, thank you to my two co-hosts Curt Kreisler and Art Abbott for their efforts throughout the awards presentations. Remember, you should start saving samples for next years’ Florida Print Awards now! You can’t win if you don’t hang on to your samples. I look forward to seeing you at next years’ banquet!

GRAPHICS UPDATE | FALL 2017

FLprint.org

The biggest night of the year for the Florida printing community was a blast and everyone showed up. Even Marty. What did they witness? The printing industry’s largest and most prestigious statewide graphic arts competition, recognizing the most outstanding printers in the state of Florida. Gabe Hernandez, President of the Printing Association of Florida, was very impressed with the talent represented this year. “WOW! All of the participants should be very proud. The printed work that was honored this year shared the tremendous talent and amazing skill of Florida’s printers. If next year’s entries are half as impressive as this year’s, then we are in for a great show!” Continue reading in the pages ahead to find out who won the big awards. But first, a quick word from one of the evening’s biggest stars, who has a message for those companies thinking of participating next year.

How do you find success in the world of commercial print? John Beadel, President of Associated Printing Productions Inc., says that the solution is simple. You just need to stay ...

MEMBERS NEWS

I sat down with John Beadel to learn how his business will change (or not) now that he has assumed the title of President. Have you ever studied for a test so thoroughly, that once it came time to take it, you knew you would not just pass it, but ace it? Or, if not a test in a classroom, perhaps it was a challenge on a sports field, a music hall recital, or a client’s board room. Where you had prepared so absolutely, so completely, that when the time came to face the test, all fear and hesitation faded away leaving only confidence and eagerness to fill the void left by their absence. Where the eyes of spectators were not forgotten, but welcomed. Where the

jeers of competitors were not silenced, but transformed to supportive cheers. If you have experienced this, then you might know how John Beadel feels as he takes the helm of Associated Printing Productions Inc., (APPi), in Miami Lakes, FL. He is prepared. He is focused. He is ready for success. When I stepped into the APPi lobby, I was greeted by the receptionist who kindly asked me to wait a brief moment while she summoned John. She

Associated Printing Productions Inc. gestured to a chair and there I sat, reviewing my notes for the interview. I expected to go over John’s history, back to the founding of APPi with his brother Richard, up to the present, as John assumes the role of president from Richard, who is set to begin retirement. Feeling prepared, I took a moment to notice my surroundings. The front office was neat, organized and buzzing with activity as employees moved about, meeting their various responsibilities of the moment. Equal to number of employees were the branded promotional pieces placed around the room. Both were dwarfed by the copious number of awards and accolades proudly displayed in the office. APPi had recently been recognized at the Florida Print Awards with 7 best-of-category awards among many others. But those feathers had not yet been added into their cap as there was no more room to hang them on the office wall. It seemed that construction was needed to accommodate further kudos. John broke into the room, apologizing and thanking me for my wait. He cited the reason for his delay as a phone call. It was only later, during the interview, that I would learn the importance of that call. We exchanged pleasantries as he led me to his office where two desks sat. One manned by John, organized but busy with documents and papers that typically reside in the house of management. The other void and silent, telling the story of Richard’s recent departure. John ushered me to a seat opposite his desk. While he talked, I noticed that he is a confident, likable man who can hold a conversation easily. It revealed, in-part, why he has found success over the years. Clients enjoy doing

business with people they like and who are comfortable in their own skin. The remaining factors that contributed to his successes were to be revealed in the conversation we were about to begin and that important phone call that delayed it’s start. I begin the interview with the details of John’s introduction to print. He came into the industry years after his older brother. Richard was a national sales manager for a paper company in Philadelphia when John was 16 years old. During his summer breaks, John would come up to visit and work in the paper factory. It was a great lesson for John to learn how a factory worked. But, instead of jumping right into the print industry, John joined the Army, serving for ten years. His last three as a drill sergeant. Two years teaching privates, and in his final year, his was selected to teach at the Drill Sergeants Academy. After learning from his mother that John was going to leave the Army, Richard called hoping to convince John to start a business together. The first thing Richard did to help John get started was to send him the pocket pal. He told him to “Start reading.” “This is what you have to know.” To say that John did not know much about the print industry at that time would be too kind. “I was like, what the hell is a dot?!” John laughs as he tells me. “I didn’t understand anything at the time. It was amazing how much I learned (from Richard)” “Richard sent me out to our biggest client at the time to show match prints. You know, back then, it wasn’t digital, we had to make match prints to show color. But that was all I knew. So, I took GOAexpo.com

the prints and the client said, “Where are the chromes?” “Where are the transparencies?” I said, “I don’t know what that is.” The client responded, “Well, how am I supposed to check the color?” She scolded me. When I returned to the office, I asked Richard what the chrome things where that she was asking for. When Richard started laughing I knew I had been set up.” “It turned out that the client was a close friend of Richard’s and he asked her to be tough on me. Richard’s ruse made me realize that I needed to be totally prepared before seeing a client … it also made me call him an idiot.” He laughed. “That was a good thing … it was something a brother would do.” John focuses on his brother for a moment and speaks with much affection. “Working with family isn’t always easy, but over 26 years together you realize that there are a lot of people that will hurt you in business, what you have to do is rely on your family … we had to rely on each other. That was a really good thing (to work together). Me taking the succession is a big honor to me. I am buying him out but I am glad. I feel good that I am able to do that. That he is able to retire. That is a good feeling to me … more than anything.” APPi began in downtown Miami 26 years ago as a print broker sharing a building with another printer. But they quickly grew and decided to expand to a bigger facility in Opaloka. They were there for about ten years until they outgrew that building and moved to Miami Lakes. Currently they have two buildings. The first is their production facility and the second is for warehousing space. The rapid growth of their business came from the services they offered clients outside of printing. Fulfilment, mailing, wide format, digital printing, data management, marketing. Over the years, they expanded into these services, constantly reinventing themselves not just to be relevant to their clients but an innovator that helped the clients’ businesses grow. They did it BEFORE it was needed. Most printers realized too late that the needed to adapt and they rushed to add services just to keep the business they already had. APPi did it early, expanding their business and establishing themselves as a partner that offered real solutions. That built a level of trust that

16

Associated Printing Productions Inc. was hard to shake. It did more than just protect the business they already had, it allowed for it grow. I asked John how he and his brother fit into the evolution. Did one of them push the new services? “In the beginning, Rick was certainly a lot more knowledgeable.” John recounted. “But our thought was as brokers, you sell what you can sell and I will sell what I can sell. We soon realized that it was more than that. We needed someone performing operations, accounting, everything. I still have the old ledger books. It took a year for us both to see what our positions were and what we had to do together to function properly. When it comes to business decisions, Richard is more aggressive and I was more of the thinker, the nuts and bolts guy. I always wanted to make sure it’s going to work before committing and he wanted to go, go, go. Between that there was a good balance that worked well for us. There were definitely times we disagreed, but at the end of the day we were still brothers. We owned the business 50/50, so if one of us said no, then it was no. What that did was teach us that we had to know enough to convince the other. If you feel so strongly about it, build a case. It was a good exercise for anyone in a business. Do your homework.” The differing personalities made the business stronger. They both had the same goal but different instincts on how to accomplish it. But they worked together, “did their homework,” and made good decisions. “When I was building up the biggest segment of the business Rick thought I was crazy, because back in his day, you would go out, look for the one big job, bid on it and hope that you win it. I did not want to do that. I wanted to build a segment of business that was constantly repeating. So, you would become a partner (with the client). So, I really wanted to change the way we did business. The normal way of doing business at that time was going to an advertising agency and biding on the big job. That was what everyone was after. I did not want to do that. I wanted to go after corporate clients. And that’s what I aggressively did. BUT, my two biggest clients were in based in Hawaii & Japan and the other in the UK. I was easily working 18 or more hours a day, every day with the time difference. I used to spend the night working in the office. Rick thought it was a mistake, that I was killing myself. But I had a different vision and I felt like I needed GOAexpo.com

MEMBERS NEWS to do it. And now, twenty years with this main client stands out. Clients come and go, advertising agencies seem to disappear, being gobbled up or combined. A lot of guys built their business on that and you saw them fail.” That work ethic and different way of thinking that changed the way they did business comes from his time in the military John believes. “That was absolutely the military. I knew it then. My dedication and work ethic came from the military experience. My training was amazing. I went in the service in ‘82 and left in ‘91. When I was in the military I was stationed in Europe in a reactionary unit. You had to go through specialized training to be in this unit. That training helped to shape my life. I learned a lot about myself through my training. I learned who I was and that I was capable of a lot, so much more than before I was in the army. I had no idea. I went into training with 90 other men, and only 13 made it through the month-long course. These were the best of the best and I saw them drop. I thought, how the hell am I doing this.

18

GRAPHICS UPDATE | FALL 2017

But you learn about yourself and what you can take and how mentally strong you are. For me to work as hard as I did for so long, trying to build these new segments of our business, that came from my military experience.” So, John learned who he was in the military, he learned about the print industry from his brother, applied those things to help APPi become what it is today. But now he is stepping in as the sole president. “The company is his now, so what happens next?” I asked. What I expect to happen when I ask this question is for John to answer with a clear plan that is well thought out, forward thinking and smart. It will be innovative like most of the ideas he has had over the years, BUT I also expect to see some cracks form in the confidence he has exhibited when talking about the past. That is not a knock-on John, as it is a natural thing to hesitate, or experience selfdoubt once you take a leadership role. The magnitude of the responsibility demands it. So many people are counting on you. So many clients measuring your every step waiting to

FLprint.org

see if you can handle the new burden. Constantly comparing you to the past leadership. Not to mention that John is someone who likes to take a different path. He tries new things that are not easy and carry some risk. With that comes extra scrutiny and doubt. Before I can even try to detect a hesitation, John blindsides me with his enthusiastic depiction of the future of APPi. There was no erosion of his self-confidence. Not even for a split second. An uninformed man might say that this enthusiasm is blind. It’s just excitement from the advancement in title. That would be true if not for the fact that John is thoroughly prepared. The details he shares with me are not what will happen next for APPi, they are what is happening now, yesterday and weeks before I had ever stepped foot into his office. The phone call John was on while I waited in his lobby, it will change his company and its service offering. I will not give away the details, but it is something that is … ahead of the curve.
