DEDICATION
Dear Dean Stahl, We Danforth Scholars, along with scores of other Washington University students whose lives you have touched over the past two and a half decades, have had the extraordinary privilege to be counted as your students and your mentees. When we arrived on campus, you welcomed each of us by name. When we were lost, you guided us. When we struggled, you hugged us. And when we succeeded, you celebrated us. No matter how busy you were, you always made each one of us feel important and special. You led by example, exhibiting the kind of warmth and respect that we could only hope to emulate. You showed us what it means to live with a purpose. Each of us holds special memories of our time with you, and words cannot express how much we have gained because of it. Thank you for helping to chart our courses in life, for teaching us the value of setting an example of leadership, and for empowering us to make a difference in the world. As we move through life, we will recall fondly the lessons you taught us through your words and your actions. And thanks to you, we will all forever live by a quote you taught us to hold dear: “To be my own self, at my very best, all the time. We will always cherish the role you have played in our lives. With deepest thanks, The Danforth Scholars 9

“Hi, Dean Stahl! There is SO much I could write about how much I appreciate you and the work you’ve done at WashU. But let me share a quick story about a specific moment you provided me that has shaped my life since. In 2004, on the Danforth Scholar retreat at Camp Miniwanca, we did an activity where you asked us to take a piece of paper and write one word that defined us. You told us to remember that word and let it inform our approach to life and our college education. I chose the word “Creativity,” which I cut out with scissors and elevated on the paper to make a sort of 3D diorama. Ten years later, I am the founder and director of Performing Arts Abroad, a company offering study abroad programs, internships, volunteer opportunities, training/intensives, and group programs for music, theater, dance, and film in thirteen different countries. This year, in our fourth year of operation, we are sending more than 100 performing artists abroad. As I work with my employees to define our core values as an organization, Creativity remains at the very top of the list. Ever since that day on Lake Michigan, I return to this word and remember never to confine myself to that which has already been imagined. There is always another way to do things, and there are always possibilities just beyond the limit of current understanding and modes of thinking. Thank you for everything you have done for your students. You will never truly know the enormity of the impact you have had!!!” Reynolds Whalen, Class of 2008

My experiences at Washington University continue to be significantly impacted by the love and compassion within the Danforth Scholars community, such an environment that was only fostered by your true passion and dedication for the program. It’s hard to imagine what WashU will be like without you, and without the hug and warm smile that we were invariably greeted with whenever we bumped into you on campus. But, like the many great leaders at our university that have gone before you—individuals such as Dr. Danforth and Dean McLeod—your presence will still be felt. You’ve given a part of yourself to this university and to the hundreds of Danforth Scholars that you’ve mentored throughout the years, and that will live on long after you’ve retired. Thank you for always listening, and for teaching us to be our own selves. I’ve learned that the most important thing for us to do is to love ourselves, for better or for worse, and to truly take ownership of both our unique talents and flaws. The bookmark that you gifted to me at Miniwanca last year is even inscribed with a reminder from Ralph Waldo Emerson to ‘make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.’ I wish you all the best as you enter a new chapter in your life and continue to make the most of yourself.” Chase McGrath, Class of 2016 “Thanks for everything. When I transferred into WashU in 2000 I was nervous, but hopeful because through your eyes I saw the opportunities and doors becoming a Danforth scholar and pursuing my medical education there could open for me. I’ll never forget, ever, the words of encouragement, and the true actions—from setting me up with my first research lab position to bringing me into your home to meet your family and discuss my ambitions with your husband, Dr. Stahl—that made me realize that I could trust in you, and that you were undoubtedly invested in my success. How you have had the energy to devote to so many of your students is truly amazing, and please know that I am forever grateful for the role you played in my path. Now, as an Assistant Professor in Neuroradiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, much has come to fruition. I can only hope to emulate your example of encouragement to those students coming behind me - large steps to follow, but steps I am happy to pursue given the impact I experienced as a result of those same efforts made by you. Thank you Dean Stahl—I truly appreciate you and everything you contributed to my life. It was an honor to be a Danforth Scholar under your guidance. Wish you much love, and enjoyment of your future endeavors! Toyin Idowu, Class of 2003 “Dear Dean Stahl, a heartfelt thank you for your support and kindness during my years at WashU. I hope I can pay it forward.” Aycan Nur Sagir, Class of 2011 “I appreciate very much what you did to build up the Danforth Scholars program. It really enriched my college experience in a way that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Crucially, I made a connection with professor Bender, which led to some successful undergraduate research, which helped me get into grad school, to get a fellowship (NSF). Likewise, the Danforth Scholars lunch discussions were really important for me in terms of developing my ability to form and articulate nuanced opinions about a large variety of topics. This had a natural lead in to me being engaged in the dialogue surrounding feminism/diversity in science. And being able to engage with these issues has enriched my life. Also, I got my first exposure to feminism through meeting older Danforth Scholars who were studying it.” Alexander Anderson, Class of 2012 “Dean Stahl—thank you for making WashU and the Danforth program a warm home for all of us over the years!” Rebecca (Griffin) Vincent, Class of 2008

“I can tell you exactly what I was doing when you called to congratulate me on my acceptance. I was sitting in the living room eating Triscuits and cheese while watching Spongebob Squarepants. It’s weird to think that was the start of one of the most amazing times of my life. I cannot image that part of my life without you, Dean Stahl. You are such a kind person and always see the best in people, even if they can’t quite see it themselves. What a wonderful occasion, and I am delighted to contribute to this album to commemorate your commitment to Washington University and the Danforth Scholars Program. Your retirement is so well deserved. After the dedication that you have provided to your community, it must be so exciting to be able to focus on yourself and your family. I am sure you hear it frequently, but please let me echo the words of my friends and former classmates, that my time at Washington University was exceptional and that my experience as a Danforth Scholar made a tremendous impact on my life, both personally and professionally. I love that the program held service in such high esteem—its commitment to “personal integrity, selflessness, a commitment to community, and a dedication to leadership and academic excellence.” As an international public health worker, every day I continue to live out this mission statement, providing leadership and vision to ensure that people around the world, in the hardest-to-reach places, have access to health care services regardless of ability to pay. While I certainly was committed to service before matriculating to Washington University, my time there as a Danforth Scholar reinforced this passion and I am forever grateful for this opportunity. Though it has been many years, I fondly remember seeing your kind and smiling face around campus, whether it be at weekly seminars during freshman year, delicious dinner events you graciously hosted at your home, or simply walking around the beautiful flower-lined paths on main campus or the South 40. Comforting moments like those made me feel so integrated, so at home at Washington University, and so proud to be a member of its community. At first, I remember feeling a little surprised that this scholarly dean was hugging 18-year-old prospective students that she had never met before. But maybe that was a ‘normal college thing’, I tried to justify. I soon realized that it was very much not a ‘normal college thing’, but rather a ‘special WashU thing.’ Your warm embrace would come to symbolize for me not only the importance the Danforth community, but also the family community at WashU. During sad and challenging times, when our Danforth family needed you most, you were always there for us, waiting with open arms. You would be willing to drop all your important obligations, which seemed like they numbered in the hundreds of thousands (maybe millions), to cater to our every need. And during festive and happy times, you would be the first one to sing our praises and congratulate us. Whether it’s your frequent dinner invites, your friendly smile, or your inviting hugs as we would pass each other through campus, I always felt like you treated me as more than just a student. I was a friend, a mentee, a son (notice how I didn’t say grandson!). You wanted to get to know me, and the rest of the students, by name, and by story. I remember, when I returned to Camp Miniwanca as a Junior this past year, I tried to pass on what it means to live as a Danforth, just like so many of the older counselors had shared with me. It’s about being humble, yet confident. It’s about being a kind and genuine person. It’s about being determined to be a positive impact in the community. It’s about striving to be my own self, at my very best, all the time. It’s about living like Dean Stahl. At the center of our Danforth community, you have stood, and your spirit is something that I try to embody each and every day.” Ian Lever, Class of 2016 83

“My first interaction with you was when I was pulled out of my AP English class and told that a Dean from WashU had called and needed to speak with me immediately. I had already applied and been accepted to WashU early decision and was absolutely terrified that something terrible had happened. I thought maybe for some reason my offer of admission had been withdrawn or something bad was going to happen, because why on earth would a Dean be calling me? I walked down to my college counselor’s office and called the Dean back. You answered and said, “I’m going to make this really quick because I’m at a traffic light and don’t want to be pulled over! You’ve been selected as an alternate for the Danforth Scholars Program and we’ll be flying you out next weekend!” I was so excited! You seemed so friendly and obviously I was ecstatic that I had the opportunity to get a scholarship. That following weekend at WashU was everything I wanted it to be and more. You were so welcoming and made me feel like WashU was a home that I already had. Throughout my time at WashU, you have continued to make sure that was the case. Even when my freshman year turned out to be much more difficult than I expected and I ended the year having no clue what I was going to do with my future, you were right there to help guide my way. You assured me that, no matter what, everything would work out in the end and that you would be there to support me the entire time. You, as always, were right. Each semester you checked in on me and always offered guidance when you could. You even offered to let me stay at your house when my roommate troubles seemed like they would be too much to handle. No matter what difficulties I faced, you were always there with a warm heart and open arms. You definitely give one of the best hugs ever, hands down. Dean Stahl, you have been one of the most influential people I’ve met at WashU and I can’t imagine how my life would be if I had not met you. Thank you for everything that you have done for me, and the WashU community as a whole. I do not think that this community would be the same without you. You’ve inspired me to “be my own self, at my very best, all the time” because I truly believe that you embody this motto. I wish you the best in your future endeavors and hope that our paths may cross again!” Sheridan Frank, Class of 2015 86

Thank you so much for all you’ve done for me, the Danforth Scholars program, and the entire WashU community. You made the Danforth Scholars an incredibly close community and special part of each of our lives. You have played such a tremendous and influential role in shaping my and all of my colleagues’ lives and inspiring each of us to live our lives at our own best, all the time. I will always remember your generosity of time and support in our academic careers. Your care and attention to us all made each one of the scholars feel so at home while on campus. Enjoy your grandkids and your retirement!” Geoffrey Salvatore, Class of 2007 “Dean Stahl, I can’t put into words what you and the Dan-fam have done for me. Thank you so much for always being such a kind and generous presence in my life these past two years. It’s been so incredible having someone as inspiring and thoughtful as you really shape my WashU experience. From the moment I stepped off that shuttle to WashU and you knew my name and all about me, I was so blessed to have someone as caring as you in my life. Thank you for all the times you thoughtfully hosted us in your beautiful home. You are such an incredible person and I’m going to miss you, my wonderful and unexpected encounters with you in the DUC and around campus, but I also know that I’ll be seeing you often!” Lauren Berger, Class of 2017

“Thank you for being here for us these last four years!” Cristina Clow, Class of 2015 “Dean Stahl, you’re my second mother—there’s no other way to say it. Thanks for keeping me in line, helping me grow up, being my sounding board, and— of course—getting me up in the morning! You could never appreciate all you’ve done for me. Thanks for everything. You’re a true role model.” Andy Flick, Class of 2009 “Dear Dean Stahl, thank you so much for being the heart and soul of the Danforth Scholars for so many years. My experience at WashU would have been completely different if it hadn’t begun with the wonderful and reflective Miniwanca trip and multiple dinners at your lovely home. I am so grateful to have met you when you came to visit my school when I was a junior and even more privileged and downright lucky to have the pleasure to be in the Danforth scholars program spearheaded by you for these past two years. Thank you for embracing us all with open arms and an open heart and for truly embodying the spirit of kindness, compassion, consideration, character, and strength that is WashU. I know you will always be the heart of the Danforth scholars, our grandmotherly-mascot of sorts, and we will always keep you in our hearts too. I can’t thank you enough for the impact you have made on my WashU career and for the impact you have made on me as a person. I hope to always uphold the values and true character of the Danforth Scholars wherever I go. Thank you so much for your guidance, your understanding, your nurturing, your devotion, and your love.” Kristen Koyanagi, Class of 2017
“Dear Dean Stahl, you were an empowering presence from the moment I met you. My parents still remember your phone call when I was in high school and found out I received a Danforth scholarship. They still ask about you, and I reply that I am sure you are continuing to brighten the lives of so many people, young and old. Now that I am 32 I realize just how rare people like you are in the world. You evoked a sense of the importance of family and groundedness in addition to the importance of doing good, hard work. As life gets more and more hectic, I often return to Dinners at Dean Stahl’s house—the first time I was away from home, feeling very lost—and yet feeling so immediately welcomed because of your warmth. Thank you for all that you are, and for all you have given to me and so many others. May you enjoy your next adventures to the fullest!!” Anne Clark Baker, Class of 2004 “Your passion and dedication have been such an inspiration to me. Thank you for your guidance, care, support and, of course, hugs!” Megan Nicklay, Class of 2017 “Dear Dean Stahl, couldn’t imagine my Wash U experience without you. The course of my life was changed for the better that night you called to tell me I was a Danforth finalist! Congratulations on a beautiful legacy! A million thanks yous and best wishes.” Carmi Cioni, Class of 2013
