ESCAPING REALITY - FINDING TRANQUILITY IN PATTAYA If you are like me, then sometimes you just need a bit of peace and quiet, somewhere you can visit that has a tranquil and unaggressive atmosphere. Although Pattaya is all about fun, exuberance, excitement and chaos, and that’s why we love it, sometimes we need to get away for a few hours of serenity. Here are a few laidback recommendations for those of you who want to get away from the crowds and to have a bit of reflection time.
Buddha Mountain and Bangsaray If your wife or husband has been nagging at you again for staying out all night partying on Walking Street and they won’t shut up, just get in a taxi or a hire car and head towards the Bangsaray area of Pattaya. It really is one of the most peaceful and serene areas in the region. The Buddha Mountain is a famous monument in Bangsaray with a gold-tripped outline of a Buddha on the side of the mountain. The scenic garden areas are immensely peaceful, perfect for a stroll and offer a tranquil environment you won’t often associate with Pattaya. Indeed, the surrounding countryside over in Bangsaray is home to some of the quitter attractions in the region, such as Silverlake Vineyard and numerous sheep farms. When you need to get away for a few hours of unadulterated peace in the countryside, Bangsaray is the best choice.
Sanctuary of Truth Anytime you hear the word ‘Sanctuary’, you think of a place to get away from it all and bask in solitude. The Sanctuary of Truth is one of Pattaya’s most popular tourist attractions in its own right and is a great place to get away, enjoy the ancient temple atmosphere and to just gaze out across the Gulf of Thailand and gather your thoughts. Although this stunning building is just 20-years old, it has the appearance of a centuries-old temple with intricate carvings and reflective vibes. Located a short drive from the city center at Naklua, you can catapult yourself into a den of tranquility in the city in a matter of minutes.
Koh Larn Island If you really want to immerse yourself into a tranquil holiday experience, getting away to the tropical island of Koh Larn always does the trick. Many people opt to take the 30-minute ferry ride to Koh Larn when they need to take a respite from Pattaya City. Koh Larn is one of those special places with a stunning array of beaches with a true and unadulterated island atmosphere, similar to the costal islands of southern Thailand. When you want to escape reality, Koh Larn is the place we go, either for a few hours or a few days.

THE ART OF HAGGLING ON THAI MARKETS
T
he art of haggling has existed since the dawn of creation, as far back as ancient Mesopotamia and beyond. Now you know why Middle-Eastern people are so adept at battering down the prices of everything. They invented this game and have a couple of thousand year’s head start on the rest of us. In the Western world, we go to a shopping center, see what we like, check the price and pay the fee.
#
1 – Knowing what you want Knowing what you want in life is one of the things that hold human kind back. We just don’t know what we want, so we drift along through time and space on this watery ball going from one thing to the next. Know what you want and go for it. Visiting a Thai market not knowing what you want will result in you purchasing a myriad of useless trinkets such as pieces of wood that sound like frogs, grotesque hill tribe garments and similar unwanted paraphernalia, which at the time seemed like a good idea. See what you want, know how much you want to pay for it, and go right for the jugular!
#
2 – Don’t pay the first price you are quoted Standard practices of Thai market traders are to firstly offer you a vastly inflated price for an item. Don’t be offended, you are seen as a rich person. Surely that should give us a false sense of grandeur, which always feels good. The traders are especially insightful at smelling out fresh meat. The simple way to deal with this is to immediately slash the offer by two thirds. This will send out a clear message that you are not to be messed with. Playfully bounce the prices off the trader until you both come to an acceptable compromise. Although the language barrier can sometimes get in the way, the language of money is universal.
#
3 – Keep it light hearted You would be surprised how many times I have seen full-scale arguments over the smallest amounts of money between traders and tourists. Getting the best deal is important, but please keep it light-hearted at all times. Always keep a smile on your face and control the situation with banter as opposed to aggression. Remember that this is their livelihood and they are just trying to feed their kids, their family and an extended entourage that would make Puff Daddy feel inadequate. If you are losing your cool, take a break from haggling and come back at a later date.
#
4 – Walk away if you have to One of the main maneuvers we have in our arsenal to ensure the traders know you have made your final bid is to simply walk away in the middle of the discussion. If the trader tries to chase you down the street agreeing to your last offer – you know you it’s a good bargain and purchase it immediately. If they don’t call you back, there are another 324,584 markets to choose from. You have the power; always remember that when haggling on the market. If you stand strong, hold your ground, always keep a smile on your face and know what you want, you will be going home with a vast choice of bargain items to remember your Thailand holiday for the rest of your lives.

PATTAYA IN THE 1970S
P
attaya in the 1970s Anyone who was old enough, or sober enough, to remember the 1970s will tell you it was the time when Michael Jackson went through puberty, flared trousers were commonplace underneath the Wurlitzer
disco lights of John Travolta’s seediest dreams and that television had finally become Technicolor. By the 1970s, Pattaya had become a fledgling vision and mini-me version of the city we know and love today, so check out our article about Pattaya in the 1970s. In the late-1950s, Pattaya was still a sleepy fishing village, but only 20 years later by 1978, Pattaya was finally recognized as a city. At that time in history, only the Naklua area was recognized as an actual place attached to a municipality, while other areas in Pattaya were yet to be developed in any way. As we mentioned in last month’s article about the 1960s in Pattaya, during the decade, Pattaya had become a rest and relaxation place for the US troops fighting their war in Vietnam. In a short space of time, the city had been transformed from sleepy village into a party place of debauchery and delight, attracting hundreds of impoverished girls from the Northeastern Isaan region to Pattaya to find fortune and life-changing money. There are some great accounts of 1970’s life in Pattaya, which describes the city as a “bizarre sexual Disneyland”. Where the soldiers went, shopkeepers, girls, hotel builders and construction sites followed. The 70s are probably the time of the biggest growth and change in Pattaya with the construction of new resorts looking to
29
PattayaCityUncovered.com
cash in on the ‘boom’. Hotels and resorts such as Pattaya Palace, Orchid Lodge (today the Amari), Tropicana, Merlin (today the Hard Rock), Siam Bayshore, Asia, and the Royal Cliff, were constructed and the holiday destination we know as Pattaya was truly born to international travelers, especially backpackers at the time, changing the city’s fortunes forever. The growth was simply manic over a short time period, and in true Thai-style, completely unplanned, creating a melting-pot of bars, resorts, guesthouses, restaurants, street food vendors, massage parlors, taxi stands, shops and stores, but still no 7/11 in sight! Some may say that the changes came too fast and that still today, we are experiencing some of the knock-on problems of rapid and unplanned growth. Not only were tourists from the fledgling holidaymaker markets in Europe and America flocking to the city, but there was also a massive migration of Thais coming to Pattaya looking for fame, fortune, husbands, riches and opportunities to cash in on the rising popularity of the city. As the Vietnam War came to an abrupt end, US servicemen stopped coming to the city, but by this time Pattaya was beginning to be overrun by single European men, which more than made up for their absence, cementing Pattaya’s reputation as a truly must-visit holiday destination for those looking for sun, sand and promiscuity. Without the boom in the 1970s, it’s highly unlikely that Pattaya would be the famous and popular tourist destination it is today.

How much does it cost to retire in Thailand? Offshore Investment Brokers (“OIB”) provides qualified investment advisers globally. Having been established in the Middle East and Africa for over 15 years, in 2015 they looked further East and now operate four offices in the region, two in Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and two in Thailand, in Bangkok and Pattaya. The Pattaya office is run by Craig McAvinue,, a Chartered Accountant with over twenty years’ experience in the offshore finance industry, mostly in Jersey , Channel Islands Coming from a Trust background Craig understands that wealth preservation is of upmost importance. Having sat on Investment Committees of Trust Companies during his time in Jersey, he was able to see first-hand where the opportunities existed to grow clients’ wealth. As dealing with very sizable accounts and so often courted by fund and wealth mangers, this gave a better chance of identifying where to place clients’ monies to obtain a better return.
It can also be a quite complex situation when you leave the UK from a tax perspective. Just because you are no longer resident there does not mean that you have no tax liabilities and the penal UK Inheritance tax can still be in effect. Craig is able to advise on the above and help with planning to ensure that you or indeed your beneficiaries once you pass away do not get any nasty surprises from HMRC . Please email craig.mcavinue@oibme.com to arrange an appointment and then visit us at our conveniently located office just off Soi Bukeow for a no obligation review of your situation
Living overseas, we generally do not have the luxury that many of our friends who remain at home do when it comes to an employer paying into a pension fund for us. Therefore, it is vital that we arrange our own retirement planning. OIB are here to assist with this as well as helping people manage their retirement funds even, if you are nearly there already. If your plan is to move away from the UK, moving your pension into an overseas scheme can save you 17.5% on your income.

PATTAYA DAYTRIP WATCHING PATTAYA UNITED PLAY FOOTBALL
A
lthough Pattaya is famous for its daytrip options, at Pattaya City Uncovered, we always like to push the boundaries and offer you something completely different. Pattaya has its very own football club, Pattaya United, that plays in the Thai Premier League, which really is a great day out and something that not many tourists get to experience.
At the Game Make sure you get to the game in good time so you get to choose where you want to sit, especially if you are bringing your family along. The games can get quite packed, so being on time is important. The tickets are also fairly-priced at 120 THB, 150 THB and 200 THB for VIP tickets. It makes for a really inexpensive few hours of fun. Okay, there are no meat pies or Bovril, but you can get alcohol at the stadium, which as we mentioned above, goes hand-in-hand with visiting a live football match. And if you are hungry, there are some great nearby restaurants to visit after the game…
Pattaya United are football team based in Pattaya, formally known as Pattaya NNK United that was rebranded in 2009. They play at the Nong Prue Stadium, which is located in East Pattaya near to Siam Country Club Road and only a 20-minute drive from Downtown Pattaya. They have been a firm fixture in the Thai Premier League for the past few years and are considered as one of the most solid teams in the league in terms of support. Before the game As with any football match, it’s not just about the game, but also what you do before and after. We would recommend that you get to the Nong Prue Stadium at least an hour or so before the game not only so you can get your bearings, but also so you can get a good parking spot if you are driving there.
After the game Now the game is finished, it’s a good idea to take advantage of being in East Pattaya. There are loads of restaurants in the area, mainly on Soi Khao Noi and Soi Khatalo. However, the stadium is near to Siam Country Club Road that leads directly to the stunning Lake Mabprachan area. Lake Mabprachan is an amazing place for bars and restaurants and enjoys more of a laidback and upscale atmosphere. Halfway around the lake, you will find The Loft Sports Pub & Grill, which is quite a new establishment offering an authentic air-conditioned sports bar atmosphere with a wide choice of Western dishes that are high quality. With draught beers and lots of options, this is the perfect way to end the day, and also ideal if live EPL football is live on television.
Once you get to the stadium, there are a number of bars nearby where you can get a drink and prepare your alcohol intake for the game. Just a 2-minute walk from the stadium is the ‘Player’s Lounge’, which is a Western-style bar/restaurant that serves draught and bottled beers at a good price. Going to the game being sober is sacrilegious, so make sure you get over to the Player’s Lounge to prepare. PattayaCityUncovered.com PattayaCityUncovered.com

DISPELLING THAILAND MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS I always find it amusing when people, especially some of my friends who have never visited Thailand, ask me really daft stereotypical questions or make sweeping statements and generalizations about Thailand. Usually, I just ignore them, but from this moment on I will send them a link to this article dispelling Thailand myths. Anything that will save my vocal chords for more pressing issues such as berating the missus for lukewarm gravy, singing Gladys Knight and the Pips tunes in the shower, or shouting abuse at tuk tuk drivers and erratic motorcyclists is a godsend. All Thai Women are in the business! Not exactly true! I am too lazy to find statistics, but there are over 60 million people in Thailand, so theoretically at least 30 million are women. I can’t even begin to tell you how stupid that statement is, but even guys who have lived here for years talk like that. It’s like saying all Germans wear sandals, all the English are beer-swilling football hooligans, or all Russian men are called Vladimir. I think you will find that the statement is insulting, and let’s face it, some of the Thai girls I have met had much more money and a better quality of life than I, and worked very hard to get to that point might I add. It’s just a ridiculous statement, so let’s not have any more of that kind of talk.
Thai people are always trying to scam money from me! Yet again, complete balderdash! This reference basically comes from those who stay in holiday destinations where the main focus is on parting holidaymakers from their wallets. Go to any holiday destination in the world such as the Costa del Sol, Amsterdam, Jamaica and even Las Vegas. This happens everywhere and shouldn’t be used to bash Thai people… it’s just plain wrong! When the King passes away, the Prince will cause big trouble for Thailand! Again, not exactly true. This is a statement I hear all the time from not just foreigners who live here, but also the local Thais. I have to be careful what I say 38
PattayaCityUncovered.com
here, for lese majeste reasons. Money runs countries, plain and simple! Hi-society Thais live and breathe cash, and they also come from very powerful families that make up the politicians, governments, lawmakers, media moguls and the richest business people in the country. Nothing will get in the way of them and their money, not even the Royal family… you better believe that! As long as the world stays on the same megalomaniac path, things here will remain the same, regardless who is supposed to be running the country! The Thais always make it hard for us foreigners to own land and property here! I feel where you are coming from if you are a businessman seeking out investments and capital ventures. But let’s face it, what’s wrong with protecting their country for their own people… it makes complete sense to me. Too many countries around the world have sold out to the highest bidder. A Thai friend of mine in Phuket said that if the prices on the Phuket property market continue to rise, normal Thai people will have to go and live in the mountains or under a bush somewhere. No-one is saying that is the foreigners fault because many Thais build developments to profit from foreign money, but if England had protected their own interests 30 years ago, there would not have been such a high percentage of unemployed and homeless people. So I suppose it depends which side of the garden you’re speaking from. I believe that protecting your own interests as an entire nation is a good thing for its inhabitants! If you live here, you will know these statements are very prevalent in everyday life in Thailand. If you say the statements enough times over and over again to people, and they repeat them over and over again to their friends, they become like cast-iron facts. But don’t worry, it’s okay to think for yourself sometimes, it’s not hard, just stop listening to hearsay and form your own unbiased and objective opinions. The world will be a much better place for it!

THE 3 WAYS TO ENJOY SONGKRAN IN PATTAYA
ongkran isn’t only the name for Thai New Year, but is also known as the biggest water fight/festival in the world. It’s the perfect time of the year to get up close and personal with Thai culture in the most exciting and fun way. If you are in Pattaya or anywhere else in Thailand from April 13th onward, you can expect to become part of a water fight of the ages, and there is not much you can do but batten down the hatches, get your arsenal of water cannons at the ready… and let’s go! Depending on where you are in Thailand will define how long the festival takes place. In some places in the North of Thailand, the festival can go on for one week, although in Phuket it’s only for 24-hours. The festival takes one week to unfold in the Pattaya region, moving from area to area each day. It has been scientifically proven that there are only 3 ways to enjoy Songkran in Pattaya in a recent study by Quantum Physicists, and here they are:
Full-on Debauchery If you are going to do something, do it properly! The most pro-active way to immerse yourself in Songkran 2017 is to revert back to the scene from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Commando movie, when he ramraids the gun shop, straps on several pump-action weapons, grenades, rocket launchers and mortars and proceeds to unload them all simultaneously on his enemies.
The Passive Way Not everyone is a true action-hero. Sometimes in life it is better to know your place. If you are like me and like to enjoy things but never really take them to the limits, a more passive approach to Songkran is essential. You are going to get wet, that is an absolute, and you do really want to partake in some of the fun, but not at 100mph.
You don’t have to blast policemen and old ladies in the face with your pump-action water cannon, as you can still get out onto Pattaya beach road, soak up the atmosphere and excitement and then find a restaurant where you can keep out of the firing line while still enjoying the view. Treat Songkran as a spectator sport. Opting Out of Songkran No-one likes a party-pooper, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. That is the attitude of our third group. It will be difficult to get through the entire seven-day period of Songkran in the Pattaya region without getting wet, but a few well-placed plans will help. Barricade yourself in your hotel, condo or villa, get enough rations to last a week and then you can literally hide away in your safe dry place until the madness is over. Maybe you can watch the entire Game of Thrones back-catalogue or finally make a start on reading War & Peace.
Pattaya will come to a standstill during the festival, so there are not many ways to hide from the water fight, so get all your weapons together, form a tight-knit task-force and proceed to spray everything and everyone for the entirety of the festival. Just remember, you get 10-points for spraying a police officer in revenge for all your driving fines!
