01 PROJECT:

Am I Queer-ious?

LOCATION:

415 Broadway, New York

SUBJECT:

Studio 2

YEAR:

2022

The aim of this Studio was to closely study a non profit organisation and create a space that would reflect its mission and values. The space has been designed keeping in mind users from the queer community, anyone who has a queer individual in their circle, or even someone who want to become an ally. The entire project revolves around various forms of utilities of sustainable materials, including the master element, “terracotta,” which apart from reflecting the feeling of warmth and calm also takes meaning from the traditional brown stone color of New York, which depict a sense of belonging within diversity.

The biopholic elements in the space are symbolic of refuge, prospect, mystery and fluidity. They evoke feelings of serenity in the midst of the space and the variety in seating in all the floors offer a unique sense of comfort and multifunctionality. The overall incorporation of curves and circles into the spacial design is constructed to convey an idea of exploration and uniqueness of each person’s journey with queerness. Furthermore, the usage of curves is also an association with fluidity and freedom of expressing oneself in their own terms, becoming a highly instrumental tool in designing furniture and the floor plans of the space. The spacial organisation weaves all activities of the community into one fabric, such as the experiential center, including hanging personal letters, artwork and souvenirs of current students and previous alumni to encourage the potential members, therapy and wellness rooms, lounges and common areas for gathering and fostering a sense of community and acceptance.

04 PROJECT:

Summer House

LOCATION:

Rajasthan India

SEMESTER:

Studio 1

YEAR:

2021

The residence, Summer House is a blend between past and present, highlighting a strong connect with nature, adding a layer of personalisation through play of color theory and addition of a unique and aesthetic window system called Jali, a concept inspired by the Mughal architecture and is introduced in the design. Apart from acting as a medium of art, Jali also brings strength and stability to the overall structure. The hypothetical client, in this case, is interested in a strong sense of color, connection with nature and an addition of a unique and aesthetic window system to acknowledge the climate.

The furniture layout was designed to play with the element of light. The Jali remains the focal point while the spatial distribution is done keeping in mind the preferences of the client. It contributed towards creating a synchronous experience.

SUBJECT:

The project expected us to design a dining space inspired by a specific cuisine with a unique set of furniture. The cuisine of choice was Japanese and the core element taken as design inspiration is chopsticks. The purpose of the design was to create a different seating and dining experience providing a sense of flexibilty to the guests. It is an attempt to make product design seem minimal and comfortable to compliment the overall ambiance of the dining space. The furniture adds an experiential quotient in elevating the space.

The goal of the design is to highlight a commonplace yet very signature piece of cutlery in Japanese culinary culture while simultaneo
