Glitz and Glam NY Fashion Week boasted of glitzy and glamorous bead work. Taylor Swift is a big fan of the beaded look this year and has been spotted on the red carpet in gowns dripping with shimmer. Lucky for us regular girls, we don’t need a red carpet to rock the glam look. Bring a little shine into your wardrobe with a simple beaded neck tee, statement necklace or sequin-lined skirt. *Make it Work: White is white hot for summer. Get ahead of the trend curve and pair a delightfully glam piece with a simple white flouncy skirt. For an extra pop of color slip into your favorite pair of hot pink low top sneakers to complete the look.

Vintage Accessories A breath of fresh air for a stuffy wardrobe, ask your mom or grandmother if you can go thrift shopping in their closet. Vintage accessories bring an old world charm to your modern gear and make great conversation pieces. *Make it Work: Mixing vintage pieces with your modern style is like a blast from the past. Boy Confidential: WHAT HE REALLY THINKS ABOUT Have you ever wondered what boys really think about? We interviewed Alex, 13, from Richmond, Virginia to find out what goes on inside the mind of real guys . . . STATS: ALEX G. Age: 13 Favorite TV Show: Spongebob Squarepants, Dual Survivors Style: Sporty Favorite Food: Burgers with mustard and pickles Favorite Song: Thrift Shop by Macklamore

OMGirl: What is the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning? Alex: I wish I didn’t have to go to school. And I wish I had went to bed on time instead of playing my PlayStation 3 ‘til 2 a.m.! OMGirl: What’s more important to you – looks or personality? Alex: Personality. Staring at someone for an hour would get boring. A girl needs to have a personality. She needs to be herself. OMGirl: If you like a girl how do you act? Alex: I play it cool. I will make her my friend and try to find things in common with her. If I think she likes me too I will tell her how I feel. But usually I just keep it to myself. OMGirl: What’s it like to be a boy in 8th grade? Alex: It’s nice to be the oldest kids at school but it’s also scary. I know that next year when I am in high school I will be the low man on the totem pole again. So I try to be nice to the younger kids in my school. I hope the good karma comes back to me. OMGirl: What do you wish girls did less of?

6

Alex: Care about their appearance. I’d rather spend thirty minutes playing mini golf with you than thirty minutes waiting on your hair to curl. Besides, I think a girl looks best in jeans and a t-shirt. It tells me she is confident in herself.

Why wait until you are grown to make a difference? Tweens can make a difference too! These five ideas are super simple and easy all while providing ultimate impact for your community. So what do you say? Are you ready to change the world?

Give the gift of friendship –Invite someone that doesn’t have a lot of friends at school to sit with you at lunch. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a lot in common. Sometimes the best friend you will ever have is nothing like you! If your class has assigned seating connect through phone numbers or emails instead. Send love via snail mail – Google nursing homes in your area or find one in your phone book. Pick one that sings to you and get going. Make cards for the residents. Many of them may not have family of their own or get many visitors. You might want to have your mom or dad call and find out how many people live there. Then have a grown up drop them in the mail. Reach out to a hurting kid – Hugsandhope.org is a charity that specializes in providing sick children with fun mail. The only rule is you can’t talk about sickness. Hugs and Hope’s mission is to make life a little more ordinary for kids who have extraordinary circumstances. You might talk about the weather, your vacation or your dog Fluffy . . . just keep it fun! You can find addresses on the organization’s web page. Plant a garden – Environmentalists say that there is more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere today than in the last 800,000 years! Yikes! Planting just one tree or a few small plants can make a BIG difference! If everyone in the world planted ONE plant that would be 7 billion new sources of oxygen! Go on a planet clean up – Gather up your friends and head to your local park. Clean up the trash you find lying around and recycle what you can. Make it a little more fun by making it a contest! Whoever finds the most interesting piece of trash wins! Every girl can change the world. Big or small. Short or tall. Freckles or foundation. When you take the time to care about the planet, the planet will take notice. If every girl in the world did just one thing to make a difference today . . . we would wake up with a different planet.

Get the Look:

Colorful yet simple and PERFECT for spring, Taylor really knows how to make her every day outfits look incredibly chic! What makes Taylor a style icon is that she isn’t afraid to play with bold colors. She always adds a splash of the unexpected to all of her favorite looks! Want to steal Taylor’s style? You probably have all you need already right inside your closet . . .

Button-Up Shirt A button-up shirt is the perfect go to piece for spring and summer. Best of all, you can wear it SO many ways! Button up it to the max with a Peter Pan collar necklace and glam glasses for a day when you are feeling chic. Tie it up in a knot on a hot day at the beach. Leave it unbuttoned and add a pop of color with a bold tank top underneath. If you don’t have a button up in your closet . . . borrow one from your brother’s closet.

Jean

Shorts

Still swimming in a sea of denim from winter? Create your own shorts by cutting just above the knee of a pair of jeans that have become too short. By cutting them longer you can get multiple lengths out of one pair . . . here’s how. Leave them be or roll them up once for Bermuda shorts. Roll up three to four times for a higher cut.

Vintage-Look Sneakers Do you have a dingy pair of white cloth sneakers lying around? Have your mom pick up some fabric dye in your favorite color. Follow the directions and then watch the wow happen! Taylor seems to favor the color red but you can go for any color you dare!

Sunglasses Sunglasses are one item that transfers effortlessly from one year to the next. But if you think yours need an update get out the hot glue gun and make yours brand new! Colorful rhinestones go on seamlessly. You can also try glitter, paint pens and buttons for a kitschy look.

Celebrity Day Jobs Before they were celebrities they were just like you and me. They did their homework. gloves?! We hit the streets to find out where some of your favorite celebrities got their Johnny Depp – Long before he was swashbuckling pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny had a job that was MUCH less hip. Johnny called around trying to get people to buy pens! I wonder if he signs autographs with the pens he couldn’t sell?

12

Kanye West – Do you have that pink blouse in a size 2? Before he was spitting rhymes at the mic, Kayne was folding sweaters at The Gap.

Selena Gomez – I love you. You love me. Selena got her start on kiddy tv! Today she hangs with the Biebs . . . but she used to hang with Barney.

Harry Styles – “Sprinkles or no sprinkles?” Before Harry was baking up fresh beats with One Direction, he spent his time baking donuts at a local bakery. Maybe that is how he got so sweet!

They shopped at the mall. They wore giant chicken suits and inspected the fingers of start – it’s not very glamorous but hey, everybody’s gotta start somewhere! Miranda Cosgrove – “I’ll take a number two with pickles, extra cheese – hold the mayo.” When she was just a wee little thing, Miranda starred in a series of Burger King commercials. So - do you want fries with that?

Adam Levine – Before he was the lead singer of Maroon 5 or flipping his chair around on The Voice Adam flipped burgers at Johnny Rockets. Johnny Rockets is famous for being the home of the original hamburger!

Ellen DeGeneres – Ellen’s first jobs are pretty random. She worked at JCPenny as a salesgirl, at a car wash, a law firm and even at a glove factory! You can find Ellen in the upcoming flick Finding Dory! She’s clearly a much better actress than she is glove maker.

Brad Pitt – Chicken anyone? That’s the question Brad asked when he advertised a fast food joint on the side of the street . . . in a giant chicken costume! Is anyone else having a flashback of Al from Toy Story?

It’s the weekend! No homework. No bedtime. No RULES! Ok . . . well, maybe there ARE rules. But when it comes to fashion? The only rules to make are your own! Have a little fun this Saturday with these fabulous mani/pedi ideas that break up the ordinary routine with a splash of the unexpected.

Pink Lemonade What’s better than pink lemonade sipped poolside? Pink lemonade you wear on your fingers and toes. Darling and feminine without skipping a beat, the only thing this mani/pedi is missing is your favorite bikini. Get the look: Start with a base coat of your favorite shade of pink. Allow base coat to fully dry. Using a nail art pen apply yellow polka dots. If you do not have a nail art pen an old ink pen can provide a similar effect. The circular end of a bobby pin also works well. Simply brush the tip of the pen with your nail brush applicator or dip the bobby pin in your polish bottle and

All the Glitters Try this glam mani and sleep in Monday . . . These glamorous nails make even rolling out of bed look divalicious! Get the look: Pick out a favorite base color and glitter coat from your nail stash. Apply the color coat to your nails and allow it to dry. Apply glitter from the center of your nail up ONLY. Yep . . . that’s it!

mani/ to try week

Strawberry Fields We can’t promise you won’t want to bite your nails when you try this scrumptious strawberry design! This look is perfect for a day at the farmer’s market or simply passing the time on a rainy Saturday. Get the look: Start by applying a base coat of bright red to your fingers and toes. Allow the coat to dry fully. Use a nail pen to add six small white polka dots starting from the bottom of the nail and stopping at the nail’s center. Allow polka dots to fully dry. Using your nail art pen again, apply a spring green in a zig zag line to the top of your nail. This will serve as your strawberry leaves.

pedi’s this end! The Surprise Ending Simple yet surprising, this manicure idea won’t take any longer than your normal routine . . . but it’s WAY cuter! Get the look: Paint your thumbs and all fingers except your pinkies blue. Allow this color to dry so you don’t smudge it while opening color 2. When the blue coat has dried, apply a bright green coat to your pinkies. Instant fabulous!

Little Sister Corner:

Five Easy Ways to be a Mentor What makes a girl beautiful? It isn’t just her outward appearance. What makes a girl truly beautiful is her insides. Caring is GORGEOUS. Kindness is FABULOUS. For beautiful-on-the-inside-you . . . these five easy ways to be a mentor will remind younger girls of one thing too. They are beautiful-on-theinside too. 1. Be a friend to a younger child who has been bullied. Having an older friend can really boost a young girl’s confidence! 2. Read a book to your little sister. She’ll cherish the time . . . you’ll cherish the brownie points. 3. Tutor a younger girl in your best subject. Many schools have a mentor program. If yours doesn’t ask your teacher about ways you can get involved. 4. Make your free time count. Instead of saving all your crafts in a box, have your mom package them to the local children’s hospital to cheer up kids in need. 5. Volunteer to help out at the birthday party of your younger sibling or friend’s sibling. You can paint nails, do makeup and create fierce lil’ diva hair! How are you being a mentor in your community? We’d love to hear about it. We may feature you in an upcoming issue of OMGirl! Aaspirations Publishing Inc. 6424 Longspur Rd Mississauga ON L5N 6E3

Write On: How to Get your Stories Published Walking the runway in Milan sounds fun . . . but you’d rather read Emily Dickenson in a roadside café in Paris. Being a pop diva sounds interesting . . . but not as interesting as having lunch with poet laureate Billy Collins and picking his jalopy sized brain. Yes. When it comes to cookie-cutter-girls, girl, you aren’t one! If you love writing by the glow of a book light and often fall asleep five chapters into Pride and Prejudice then you are well on your way to being a published author! Young people get published every day and some have even went on to be on the New York Best Seller List. Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon, was a kid when he made the list! So how can you get your stories published? Read on to find our expert tips from a real life children’s author!

Write What You Love What makes you tick? What really makes your heart go pitter patter? When you are passionate about your subject your readers will catch on and be passionate about it too. A good writer can write just about anything and have it be readable. But an excellent writer will write about the things that move them and in turn, move others. Simply put – you can’t fake passion!

Research Publishers That Accept Submissions from Kids What is a submission you ask? A submission is when you send one of your stories or articles to a book, magazine or website editor for review. You will need your parent’s permission of course. You can research these places online with the help of your mom or dad. You can also look at the submission guidelines of your favorite magazines. If you are looking to get even more involved in writing, ask your parents for a copy of the Children’s Writer’s Market Guide for your birthday. It is a book of editorial contacts with a special section especially for young authors.

When in Doubt Read it Out! What makes a great writer? An avid reader! Reading can actually teach you to become an amazing wordsmith. Read books from the genre you want to write in. Do you love adventure? Read J.K. Rowling. Do you still love a good picture book? Pick up the Skippy Jon Jones series. Take time out of every day to read and write. You just might be surprised at the things you pick up!

19

Start a Blog A blog can be a great place to get your start and get noticed. You will need your mom and dad’s approval to keep things safe. There are many great sites out there with plenty of safety features. Wordpress is a favorite of many authors. It allows you to share what you want and protect what you don’t. The controls can be tricky so have a parent help you be absolutely certain that yours are in the highest protective mode. When you are writing a blog it’s a good idea to stick with a general theme. For instance, do you like reading books? Use your site to review them. Publishers might be interested in knowing the ideas of the real life kids who read them. Do you enjoy poetry? Devote your blog to rhyme. Do you like mysteries? Give your readers a classic who-done-it story to puzzle over. Whatever you choose . . . just have fun!

Don’t Stress

Know that Even Published Authors Get Rejected When I first started writing, I got A LOT of no’s before the yeses started coming in. How did I get through? I read a great article about the infamous Dr. Seuss. He was turned down more times than you can count. Can you imagine a world without The Lorax, cats in hats and kids who ran the circus? I don’t know about you but I surely can’t!

Rejection is a part of the business. If an editor turns down your work it can very easily be because it’s simply not the kind of material they publish. Rarely, does it have anything to do with the quality of a writer’s work. However, if you do receive constructive criticism take it as a compliment. It is very rare that an editor will take time out of their busy day to give someone feedback. This usually means they see potenStart Small tial in your work. But remember a form letter A lot of girls think that they need to be a big time doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t. Stress is the WORST enemy of a writer. Writer’s Block happens to everyone but if you spend too much time worrying about what editors think your work will suffer for it. Write for yourself first and foremost. Then edit things later if needed. In the end, a writer writes for herself . . . when she does, an audience will follow.

author to make an impact. The truth is if you reach just one reader you are already a real writer! A writer, after all, is just someone who shares their thoughts and innermost feelings on paper hoping someone will appreciate it. If your school has a newspaper, find out how to get involved. If it doesn’t, ask if you can start one. Before you approach your teacher get some ideas down on paper. Every good writer approaches their editor with a kick-butt proposal! A proposal says you mean business.

Self Est

In a world where people aren’t always loving and kind, it can be tempting to not be loving and kind to yourself too. It can be difficult to remember that you aren’t the brain child of someone else’s opinion of who you are.

You are unique. Spectacular. Amazing! When your self-esteem is low and you are feeling like you just don’t measure up, take a look at these simple truths. These famed examples of perseverance echo something every girl should know . . . You are worth it. You matter - Don’t give up!

Truth #1: Other People Won’t Always Be Nice

26

Thomas Edison was described by his teachers and classmates as “dense, dull and stupid.” Thomas wanted more than anything to be accepted but it seemed as though no one be-

teem: Don’t Give Up!

lieved in him. Except for one person - Thomas’s mother. She taught him to believe in himself. Thomas would later go on to shape our modern world and invent motion pictures . . . quite possibly the favorite pass time of kids. Today we read about Thomas in our history books. He inspires children everywhere! It took some time but Thomas got his wish. He was not only accepted but ADORED! Don’t give up!

Truth #2: Not Everyone Will Believe in You Lucille Ball was one of the most recognized comedic actors of her generation. But she wasn’t always so popular. In fact, her drama teacher told her to give up acting and try a new profession because frankly she flat out thought she stunk! But Lucille kept at it. She went on to star in I Love Lucy and many other TV shows that are still played on our satellites today. Don’t give up!

Truth #3: Failure Can’t Last Forever Michael Jordan is an amazing basketball player. He can run, dribble and dunk like no one’s business! But when he was a kid like you he didn’t even make his high school basketball team! Today he is the most well-known basketball star in the entire world! When he failed, Michael could have given up, but he chose to look at failure as a road block not a destination. If he had quit I wonder where he would be today? Don’t give up! Life isn’t always easy. People aren’t always nice. We can’t win at everything. But if we keep the faith, if we press on and believe in ourselves? Success will come, dreams will be fulfilled and happiness will always follow. Don’t give up!

Five surprising facts about bullying you never knew (And what you can do to change them!)

Fact #1: 3.2 million children will be bullied every year. Change it: Refuse to add to the number. If someone is bullying you or someone else, tell a trusted adult.

Fact #2: 160,000 kids will skip school today because of bullies. Change it: Bullies thrive on power. Remember that your power is your OWN. If you are being bullied don’t be scared into staying home. If someone else you know is being bullied, be their safety buddy. Eat lunch with them. Be their friend. Just be there.

Fact #3: 1 in every 4 teachers will do nothing about bullying. Change it: If your teacher isn’t speaking up - tell your principal or counselor. If your principal or counselor doesn’t listen - call the School Board. You and your loved ones CAN change things. Keep speaking up until something changes.

Fact #4: Cyber bullying has become a bigger problem than bullying that takesplace on campus. Change it: If you are being bullied online tell your parents. Then, block the user. If you social media, use it wisely. Even what feels like an innocent joke between friends can quickly be reblogged or posted on the accounts of your friends’ friends. If you wouldn’t want it said about you don’t say it.

Fact #5: The majority of school violence begins with children who are bullied. Change it: While we shouldn’t live in fear, unfortunately violence has become a part of our society today. Instead of living in fear we should be proactive. If you see someone being bullied speak up and tell someone. Reach out and be a friend. You might just save a life.

n a h t r e t r a m S e r a u o Y : k n i h T You u o Y t tha s e u l 10 C be a Genius Could

Could you be smarter than you think? These quirky, yet accurate, clues could be the key to unlocking the secret of your intelligence. So, are you a secret genius? Read onto find out!

You are a chocolate lover. A recent study was conducted that

looked at the number of Nobel laureates, a recipient of a prize of achievement in either art or science, per country. Countries that consumed more chocolate had a higher instance of these types of geniuses.

You are a little odd. If you are, well, a little weird your chances of being a genius are much higher than “ordinary girls. We like to think of it not as weird but eccentric. Some of the most brilliant minds in the world, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, Ludwig Van Beethoven, were considered to be quite odd during their time.

You are the ďŹ rst born child. First born kids are more likely to be super intelligent. They are also more likely to become

30

president than their younger siblings.

You are left-handed. Being left-handed is quite rare. It actually takes the use of your right brain to write with your left hand. The right brain also controls your ability to imagine, be creative and see the whole picture of a situation.

You are very creative. Creative people tend to be more intelligent than those who are not. The ability to see things outside the box is a trait that is thought to be in close relation with genius status.

You are a self-proclaimed night owl. There is something programed in our bodies that encourages us to do what needs doing in the day and to gather energy at night. This is thought to be encoded in our DNA as early ancestors needed to scavenge for food in the day light hours. If you go against the norm and prefer the night life . . . you could be a secret genius.

You are tall. Tall girls tend to do better at tests than their shorter girls. Why? We have no idea, but it IS scientific!

You are an internet whiz. While it’s only theory right now, some experts believe that using the internet over the next ten years will make people smarter. Others say this isn’t true and it actually lowers your IQ. Only our college years will tell I suppose!

You have blue hued eyes. If you have blue eyes you might just be in luck. Girls with blue eyes tend to score higher points on tests that require fast thinking than girls with darker colored eyes.

You are a musician. Musicians are said to have brains that function differently than those who do not play an instrument. If you are not yet a musician . . . no worries. There is no time limit to pick up an instrument and start playing! So how did you score? Are you a secret genius? Share your results with a friend and see how they measure up! And if you didn’t see any secret clues on the list that matched your life? No worries. That probably just means you are a genius already – no secret needed.

Vocal calls, grunts and pant hoot sounds are all used in different variations to alert others of food sources and their location. Each chimp also has a very distinct pant hoot variation that is its name of sorts. It allows the other chimps to determine exactly who is making calls from far away. Aside from this, scientists like Jane, soon discovered that they could pick up ASL, or American Sign Language, quite easily. In fact, Jane helped a gorilla named Koko do just that. Koko phenomenally began to voice her feelings through the help of ASL and even enjoyed watching films. Old films from Holly-

Over the years, Jane was recognized for her work that was not solely based in science but also in compassion. From the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science to the Primate Society of Great Britain Conservation Award, Jane is one of the most decorated scientists in the world. Many people thought that a woman simply didn’t have the knowhow to change things . . . but, boy, were they wrong! Not only did Jane change things – many say the reason she did was because she was a woman. Not only did she have a woman-size brain – more important, she had a womansize heart. And when you combine those two things? You can do some mighty impossible things.

All about MS:

Understanding it, learning the facts an We live in a world where many treatment options become available each and every day for all kinds of dibilatitng diseases. But depiste the many treatment options more and more diseases are still deemed uncurable. MS is the most common autoimmune disease the whole world over and while it has still come so far since the days of your grandparents, the MS community still needs help from young girls like you who can get excited about the cause and carry the torch for the future generation. What is Multiple Sclerosis? Multiple Sclerosis or MS for short is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord as well as the way a person’s nerves receive and send signals. MS can affect a person’s ability to walk, talk, see, hear and remember things as well as interrupt important functions like bowel and bladder elimination. What is the biggest misconception about Multiple Sclerosis? Many people think that MS is a fatal disease that leaves everyone in permanent wheel chairs. The truth is that most people will not die from MS. They will instead live with it and live just as long

46

as anyone else in most cases. While some people may need a wheel chair most will only need them sometimes not always. It is not uncommon for a person with MS to be perfectly fine one day and wake up the next day unable to walk balanced or unaided. Some days they may walk with a cane, some days they may use a chair and other days they may walk perfectly normal. Who gets MS? Most people are diagnosed with MS in their 20’s and 30’s. While kids can get MS too it is very uncommon. My mom or dad has MS. What can I do to help out? Sometimes saving your mom or dad a few motions can make a world of difference. People with MS can have a hard time keeping up their energy levels. Their form of tired is not like ours. It is an unnatural tired. Sometimes making dinner isn’t as hard as all the preparing to make it. Leaning down to get pots, reaching up to get spices – all can take a lot of extra energy. Lay out what your mom or dad needs ahead of

nd helping the cause time.

You can also pitch in with chores and help with younger siblings when your mom or dad needs to rest. While at first it may seem like a drag, in the end it makes your family closer and helps you to learn to work as a real team. Is it normal for MS to make people sad or grumpy? Yes. Sometimes feeling bad can make you moody or feel down. You probably have felt the same way when you had the flu or a stomach bug. Sometimes parents might snip too. It’s not your fault. Sometimes lesions are even to blame. A lesion is a scar that forms on the brain or spinal cord. It sounds scarier than it really is. A scar is just the body’s way of healing after a patch of inflammation arises during an attack. However, the lesion can slow down the signals to your nerves. If a lesion is in the right place it can make people feel depressed or moody for no reason. Medicines can help square things away.

Adorability: Pass-It-Along What girl doesn’t love to send pass-it-along notes? Whether you slip them in your boyfriend’s locker or hand them off to your bestie at cheer squad, these little hints of adorability add the perfect amount of whimsy to the otherwise boring art of note passing.

Upcycle the Old

Old greeting cards and discarded magazines can add an element of vintage fun to your most secretive notes. Shaped hole punchers such as birds, flowers and owls look adorable with reused paper, adding a pop of color and unique appeal. Add a few to the outside of your next pass-it-along note. Your friends are sure to keep them tucked safely in their favorite drawer.

This Outside the Bottle

If you take another look at some of the items in your room you will find they can easily be used to add some pizzazz to plain paper. Glittery sheer nail polish can highlight words. Colored polished can create fun borders around the paper’s edge. Play with combinations to see what looks prettiest or use a series of colors and checkboxes to ask your friends what color you should paint your nails tomorrow!

Vintage Charm

Want to add a little bit of vintage charm to your next note? Simply place a tea bag in hot tap water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes. In the meantime wad up a piece of paper then flatten it back out. Squeeze out the tea bag into the cup and rub the tea bag all over the paper you are going to use. Allow the paper to dry then use a black gel pen or a pencil to write on the paper. Instant vintage chic!

Letter Limbo

Add a little whimsy to your friend’s name or yours by creating bubble letters. Instead of coloring them in . . . turn them into animals, monsters or aliens first! For instance, a lower case h makes an adorable little giraffe. Simply use the back of hump of the h to create a back and tail. The top of the h will serve as your giraffe’s head.

Prize Inside

Add a little hidden surprise to make your notes extra fun. Fold a sheet of stickers inside your pass-along-notes. Bookmarks, nail art stickers, trading cards and other small paper items work well. Gum is also a fun addition to summer note passing just don’t pass gum in class. You don’t want to end up in detention! The art of note passing is a rite of passage for every teenager. These special letters are like freeze frames of our lives frozen into time. From serious secrets to silly nonsense, these pass it on treasures will someday be one of your prized possessions tucked beneath your office chair and your future husband’s briefcase.

48

So what are you waiting for? Get to work on those masterpieces. Half the fun of note passing is making a memory! What memories do you want to make?

avoiding the lure of online fighting While bullying still takes place inside our schools, it seems like more and more bullying is becoming a cyber-issue. Many people believe this is because schools are not usually monitoring the social media sites of their students which means that many people feel they can get away with more cruelty with less punishment. If you are a Facebook fan or Twitter user, you may have already experienced some of the people who seem to live for social media drama. With so many people participating in bullying, gossip and mean-spirited jokes, how do you make sure that you are avoiding the lure of online fighting?

Don’t Post Public Pictures

Close friends are less likely to say unkind things about material on your site. It is a good idea to keep some of your feeds private.

Don’t Share Deep Dark Secrets

Deep dark secrets are best kept between two friends . . . not two hundred. Remember everything you write on your wall or Twitter feed is free game for everybody to see!

Don’t Bad Mouth Others

Even if the wall you write on isn’t likely to be seen by the person you are dissing, there are plenty of other people viewing it. One of those people may be friends with the other person. Feuds like this can get ugly FAST and end in nothing but back and forth name calling.

Surround Yourself with Positive People

Surrounding yourself with positive people is one of the best ways to avoid the drama of online media. When you and your friends keep each other accountable you will be more responsible, guiding your actions with your heart and not your ego. *If you or someone you know is being bullied or threatened online tell a trusted adult, parent or teacher. You shouldn’t have to suffer alone.

Say What?! SAVE IT FOR ENGLISH CLASS I was passing a note in class professing my undying love for my crush since all the way back in the 5th grade. The guy was out with chicken pox so I didn’t freak out too much when the teacher took it even though he had warned me eight times in the past month about passing notes! I was, however, shocked that I didn’t get detention. All the teacher did was look at me and say “Save the note writing for English class.” Well, two weeks went by and I thought I had gotten away scotch free. That was until the guy came back to school. As it turned out, the teacher had sent my note to my crush along with all the get well cards our English class had made him. I thought I’d die right there! But to my surprise my crush thought I was just trying to be cute. So he asked me out to a movie. We have been dating ever since!

So I put my head down on the library table only to doze off a few seconds before someone yelled “Hey, Lacy, read!!” Well I did read and I proceeded to look straight into the camera to tell the whole school “Don’t forget to return your library boobs by noon on Monday.” What the heck are library boobs anyway?!

I LOVE YOUR FOOT Ok. I know it’s horrible but I really wanted to get in with the popular crowd so when I was invited to a slumber party and my best friend was not I kind of told that she liked one of the girl’s brothers. I promised I’d never tell but I just blurted out “Susie loves Ryan’s arm muscles!” I really hoped they wouldn’t say anything but word got out. The next day my best friend was mortified. She didn’t speak to me for a while! But then suddenly I noticed she had gotten really chatty with the popular girls that I had attended the slumber party with. Before I knew it everyone was coming up and asking me why I loved feet. What?! I was pretty

As it turned out, Susie had gotten back at me by making up something worse than what she had really said “Josephine really loves Ryan’s feet.” For the rest of the year I was known as the foot-freak. MORE POOL OOPSIES TELL ME THAT JUST DIDN’T HAPPEN Last summer I attended my first boy/girl pool party. I was so excited! I searched for weeks for the perfect swimsuit and even invested in some sunless tanner so I looked my absolute summery best. You are not supposed to shower or bathe for three hours after application – and I didn’t. But I didn’t realize that bronzer and sunless tanner were different. So here I am, looking bronze and gorgeous. I dive into the pool and I start to taste something weird.

Color Your Way to Happy: How Colors Change Your Mood Look around you right now . . . what do you see? What if we told you that the way you are feeling and even acting might not be all your fault? (So, yea, go ahead and feel free to tell your mom that you aren’t totally responsible for that temper tantrum you pitched over losing your iPhone data plan.) Colors are all around us and not only can they affect our moods they can also affect the way we behave. So what are these magical hues and what powers do they possess? Read on to find out!

RED The color red is often used in restaurants because it actually has the ability to make you hungry! Red is also known for increasing blood pressure and heightening awareness. So if you are prepping for a test it might be a good idea to study in a red room.

YELLOW Yellow is thought to be one of the cheeriest colors on the planet. Hello? Can you say sunshine?! While it can help you concentrate it can also be hard on your eyes. Some people think it can actually make you furious!

BLUE

ORANGE In ancient times, civilizations would use the color orange to heal lungs and amp up the energy of their sick villagers. Today the color orange is thought to be a color that evokes a feeling of being welcomed with open arms.

PURPLE A regal color, purple’s roots in royalty came from a time when the color purple was very expensive to produce in clothing dye. Lighter shades of purple can unleash your creativity.

GREEN Had your tonsils removed or been in the ER for a broken arm or something else? You might have noticed that the hospital likes to use a good amount of green in their décor. And no – we don’t mean the Jello. Gross. Green has long been thought to possess healing and stress-reducing powers. This is why you often see it in hospitals, doctor’s offices and schools.

BLACK 64

If you are going on your first job interview or just need to make a good impression blue can be the way to go. Fashion designers say that it conveys a sense of loyalty. But don’t go TOO blue. Overdoing it on the color blue can come across cold and depressing.

Black is a favorite fashion hue for looking more sleek but it is also thought to represent power. Perhaps this is why many business women MUST own a black power suit!

WHITE White is a peaceful and serene color thought to have a calming, pure effect. You might see this color in combination with green for its stress reliving properties.

Get a New Room . . . This Weekend!

Ready . . . Set . . . Go!

Renew Your Curtains WINDOW WHIMSY Nothing renews a room quite like window treatments. They provide an instant pop of color and break up tired, white walls - but they can get pretty costly. You can create a set all your own with just a few dollars and a trip to the fabric store. Ask the sales rep to help you choose a fabric that cuts well. This way you only have to sew the upper portion of your curtains and can leave the bottom hem to flow freely. After you choose your fabric, measure your window top to bottom and side to side. For a longer window treatment, floor lengths look elegant or for smaller windows just measure to fit leaving 12 inches extra just in case. You can always trim down but it’s much harder to add more! Depending on the size of your curtain rod, fold a section of the top of your window treatment back. Place a few straight pins to hold. Thread your needle. Knot one end of the thread and sew an in and out stitch to the end. Knot and cut the access. Your curtain should now slide onto your rod. Double check that it works without any glitches before moving ahead. If it doesn’t cut one of the knots in your thread, pull it out and start over. Now to create a statement piece. Cut several 4-6 inch circles from a felt sheet. Cut each circle into a spiral. Taking a hot glue gun, glue the spiral back together so that the spiral raises a small bit each time to create a 3d flower. You can now hot glue those to the top corner of your treatments. Use a few beads or sequins to create a flower center. You can also opt to add ribbons, felt letters or anything else your heart desires.

66

*Thrifty tip: Don’t have the cash to buy fabric? Ask your mom if she has any old sheets or fabric table clothes that you can repurpose. You can even make a patchwork window treatment with pieces of old t-shirts or jeans.

They say a change of scenery can change your life and if your room leaves a lot to be desired than you know it’s true. Sometimes just a few simple changes can be the difference in fab and drab. Whether you want to totally renovate your room or just tweak things a bit, we’ve consulted our dazzling design team to help you start from scratch and spend pennies to make your room look like it stepped from the pages of a dream. So what do you say? Are you ready to makeover your bedroom?

Storage Solutions CHIC COLLAGE BOXES Let’s face it. We have too much stuff and not enough space to put it! It doesn’t matter if you travel light or love to shop – storage is a must! Recycle old shoeboxes or family moving boxes with nothing more than glue and magazine clippings. Spend a weekend thumbing through old magazines and picking your favorite pictures, florals or words. The closer you cut around the pictures the prettiest your collage will look. ModgePodge with a gloss finish seals perfect and it lasts through a lot of projects. School glue will work fine too but it won’t last quite as long. After you cover your shoebox completely coat the box in a single layer of glue or ModgePodge. Allow to dry. Now your collage box is ready for storage and the good news is that it is so pretty it serves as a decoration too! PLANTER POTS Need an inexpensive but darling way to store pens, jewelry and other small items? Clay pots are super cheap and easy to personalize. With a few coats of craft pain you have an instant set of storage pots to bring an organic chic look to your bookshelf. For a cute addition to this idea? Hot glue faux felt flowers to the tops of your pens and place them inside a pot for decoration and purpose!

67

Create a Chic Statement Wall GIFTWRAP GORGEOUS Have any leftover giftwrap from your last soiree? Make it into a chic statement wall. Ask your mom or dad what you can use to safely adhere the giftwrap to your wall. Scotch sells double sided tape that doesn’t damage walls but you can also use simple gift tape if you don’t mind seeing a few edges. Now with a contrasting color, Create a small frame to go around the gift wrap. Scallops look lovely. You can now start to add some personal flare to your new statement wall! You can safely tape on your favorite photos, write on your favorite quote and add bits of bedazzle to make it pop. Ribbons are a nice touch too! Redo Your Accessories PRETTY FRAMES AND SHADES Picture frames tired? Lamp shade so last year? Craft tape is a great way to jazz up the old and make it new again. Craft tapes come in many different colors, patterns and designs. Best of all they are super simple to use. Simply wrap the object you want in the colors and pattern of your choice – and viola! Instant redo. Another great idea for redoing accessories is taking broken jewelry and upcycling them. Use a hot glue gun to bedazzle the corner of a plain picture frame or redo a tired blah-zay pencil holder to sparkle and shine.

68

Jazz up Your Bed DREAMLAND DÉCOR A few decorative pillows can really add a whole new look to a tired, drab bed. Felt sheets are already in an even shape and using them means that you can make several pillows in one sitting. All you need is some thread, scissors and stuffing. First, cut an applique to go on the outside of your pillow. Some of our favorites are kittens, birds, owls and hearts. Sew this applique on to only one piece of felt. Knot your thread and set aside. Now, place the back piece of felt behind the piece of felt you just sewed on. This will hide all the unsightly threads inside. Sew around the edges to create a pillow and stop a few inches from finishing to stuff. Complete your stitching. Knot and cut the access thread. Wah-la! Instant dreamland chic! Whether you have a couple hundred bucks saved up in your pig or just a few quarters swimming around in your purse, with a little imagination you can makeover your whole life. Creativity is rich and it doesn’t cost a penny.

OMG: What was the nicest thing your boyfriend ever did for you?

ANNA: He took me on a two seat-er bicycle. I love old vintage bikes and I always wanted one. He had borrowed it from his mom’s friend. Truthfully we almost crashed but it was the thought that counted! ABIGALE: He picked me a flower for every day we had been dating from his front yard. He tied a note around it that said “I’m glad you picked me.” It was so sweet. OMG: What is your guy’s best feature? ANNA: I like his smile. I think it is really genuine. ABIGALE: I really like his music. He learned to play the drums when he was a kid. He plays in a small garage band with some of his friends. They are called the Five Flying Fries. Weird right? LOL OMG: Does your guy have a pet? ANNA: Yes! He has about five dogs living at his house on any given day. Sometimes he finds them homes and other times he will keep them until he can find a home. But a lot of times he has trouble letting them go. ABIGALE: No. Their apartment flat doesn’t allow pets but if he could have one he totally would! OMG: What is your guy’s idea of a dream date? ANNA: He’d probably take me to a free concert in the park because he could take his dogs. ABIGALE: Maybe a roadside café for a cup of decaf coffee and a dessert. We really love to talk and hang out and I’ve always told him that I would love to go to a roadside café in Paris someday!

We’d totally hate to be on your bad side. You could drop a house on us! We think it’s time for a reality check and a heaping spoonful of a nice. Mostly B’s: Average Jane You are a pretty even tempered girl. You are real, of course, and you get mad. You don’t hide it but you don’t blow it out of proportion. You are a healthy balance of knowing when to speak up and when to let it slide. That’s a pretty good mix! Mostly C’s: CHILLED OUT CHICK Mellow to the max. Nothing gets to you! Sometimes that’s good and something that’s bad because sometimes you let things fester until you get really upset. It’s good to be understanding and also good to be honest. But what’s great about your calmness is that it comes with clarity. You see the good in everybody. That’s a terrific quality.

What Does Your Nail Hue Say about you? Pink and feminine to bold and blue, your nail hue says a lot more about who you are than you realize. Colors are said to be connected to emotions and can actually cause you to feel or act a certain way. So what color is on your hands today? You might be surprised to find what secrets your nail polish bottle is keeping about you!

Blue – EARTHY You are the first one of your friends to gear up for Earth

Day. When you grow up you’d rather save the whales than walk a red carpet. From picking up litter to protesting worthy causes, blue wearers are rocking mamas who love Mother Earth.

Green – ARTISTIC Green is a bold color and it takes a bold girl to wear it

right. Green fingered gals tend to be artistic, poetic types who would rather draw inside her math bath then use it for actual math work.

Pink – FLIRTY You don’t always notice it but you come off a little flirty

sometimes – even when you have a boyfriend. This can make your guy kind of jealous. You don’t mean anything by it, of course. You smile at everybody and think it’s only polite to be extra kind to others.

Clear – SECRETIVE Clear may come across as low maintenance but deep

down you long to break free from your shell. You like vintage fashions and wild, quirky getups but play it safe to avoid backlash.

Red – SERIOUS SIDE Red wearers are often very passionate and passionate often comes with a serious side. You get your feelings hurt easily and can take things to heart. When you love you love hard and sometimes that comes back to bite you in the tush.

Yellow – FUN LOVING You are an optimist at heart and you wear it on your fingertips. Yellow lovers are outgoing, life-of-the-party types with lots of friends and a personable character.

Black – DEEP You are a free thinker. You never look at a bird and see

ONLY the bird. You think about how the bird got there, where it’s going next. When you look at life you see the journey. You also are likely to spend a lot of your free time reading.

Sparkle – LOW MAINTAINANCE Didn’t see that one coming did you?

82

Sparkle polishes are super-easy and on-the-go. They are almost impossible to mess up! So while it might seem like a gal in glitzy polish is rather diva-esque it can be actually quite the opposite – just a simple quick fix for a girl who’d rather be doing anything other than painting her nails.
