HISTORIC HANGOUTS

Tony’s Original Steak & Seafood Restaurant is an Auckland icon, sitting on Wellesley Street for over 58 years. Likewise, The Shakespeare Restaurant & Brewery on Albert Street has been serving punters since 1898 and houses New Zealand’s oldest microbrewery. If you’d like your next Auckland night out to encompass salacious tales from bygone times, try the Auckland Historic Bar Tour. Scouring the streets of central Auckland, it provides three hours of stops, stories and sips.

UNIQUE EATS

Order afternoon tea in your own private glass house at Miann Chocolate Factory in Morningside, or swing by Ol’Mate Avondale, the latest (and brightest) café-in-a-caravan to serve hot brews in Avondale. While away the hours with over 300 teas and romance novels at Chapter Book & Tea Shop in Mt Eden, play board games all afternoon at Cakes n Ladders café in Eden Terrace or satisfy your sweet tooth at K’ Road’s Sneaky Snacky – this cult Korean hangout serves burgers in glazed doughnut buns. In a similar vein, Mighty Hotdog in Chancery Square drench their hotdogs in sugar.

WINTER TREATS

The humble roast dinner is winter’s ultimate comfort food. The Grill by Sean Connolly serves an impressive slow roast every Sunday; visit Lord Kitchener in Sandringham for beef served inside an enormous Yorkshire pudding, or head to Grangers in Half Moon Bay for a $20 Sunday feast. For hot chocolate fans, a s’mores version from House of Chocolate in Takapuna is a must, as is the entire eight-choice hot chocolate menu at Elisabeth’s Chef Coffee & Dessert café in Kingsland. For the ultimate indulgence, Honest Chocolat in Commercial Bay pours hot chocolatey lava into edible biscuit cups.
