• It pays to have travel insurance when visiting New Zealand.
• Please don’t swim alone and take particular care at surf beaches. Rips are strong currents of water running out to sea; they are very dangerous for swimmers, but are difficult to identify. If the beach is patrolled by lifeguards, always swim between the red and yellow flags as they identify the safest area to swim.
• Always lock your car and never leave valuables in vehicles. • Keep your valuables, such as your passport, stored securely at your accommodation. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. • Carry a mobile phone at all times. • Don’t leave your bags unattended in public places.
Look for the mark of Quality Qualmark is New Zealand Tourism’s official mark of quality. When a business displays a Qualmark rating, you can be sure that the business has been independently assessed and has met strict quality standards. The Sustainable Tourism Business Awards (Gold, Silver or Bronze) also gives a guide to travellers to recognise the business’s performance against the Sustainable Tourism Business criterion.

Weather Watch It’s important to know what’s happening with the weather. New Zealand’s weather is changeable and unpredictable; parts of the country are susceptible to cyclones, other parts to strong winds and heavy rain. Sudden drops in temperature can take you from hot days to cold nights, especially in spring and autumn, so be prepared. Carry extra clothing, rain gear, sun hats and sun block.
Temperatures
Be conscious that New Zealand’s UV is very strong. Always protect your skin from the sun. New Zealand’s official weather forecaster is MetService, available online, where you’ll find up-to-date information on localised areas, as well as specifically for marine and surf, mountains and parks. Local and national radio stations also regularly update weather predictions. Tune in on the car radio. Average summer

On a budget
tips for
road trips
Some travel costs you can’t do much about, though it pays to shop around for rental car deals – and a huge range of accommodation options translates to a range of related prices, too. From camping at Department of Conservation (DOC) sites, to booking into high-end, beachside resorts – the price of a bed for the night varies significantly. If you’re watching your dollars, here’s how to save: • Consider travelling in off-peak season. The height of New Zealand summer – mid-December to March – is when New Zealand families are holidaying. If you can take your road trip earlier or later, you’ll save on accommodation costs. • Keep an eye out for Farmers’ Markets. Many towns and cities run markets on weekend days. They’re a great place to pick up cheaper fruit, vegetables, fish, free-range eggs, artisan bread, honey and a lot more – and the produce is likely to be super fresh and probably organic.
New Zealand is great for travelling by car. It’s a long, narrow country with intriguing roads in all directions and while many of those roads are winding and narrow, they all lead somewhere interesting.

rive to the conditions, don’t be in a rush, and allow for plenty of stops along the way. Be spontaneous. While the plan may involve going from A to B, why not take that back road or explore the side roads? Do your research. Pick up maps and guides from an AA Centre or i-SITE, or check out itinerary ideas online. Book your accommodation online at www.aatraveller.co.nz Kids in the car? Think about playing some car games and make a point of stopping to let them stretch their legs. New Zealand has plenty of quality, easily accessible playgrounds and even a run on the
• Orchards, market gardens and berry farms selling direct from the gate are well worth stopping for. They tend to operate on the honesty box system, so ensure you have coins for very good deals on apples, citrus, feijoas, nuts, grapes and vegetables. beach will help everyone enjoy the journey in the long run. Pack snacks. With or without hungry children in the car, it’s a good idea to have some food and bottled water to keep the driver’s energy levels up.
• Shop around for petrol. Some service stations are cheaper than others. • Pick up an AA Smartfuel Membership, collect points on your travels and redeem them in the shape of discounts on petrol. • Pick up free AA maps and travel guides from AA Centres and i-SITES.

5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF
Canterbury
DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU’VE SQUEEZED OUT EVERY LAST DROP OF CANTERBURY’S BEST BITS. SWIM: WITH HECTOR’S DOLPHINS When the sun shines on Akaroa, the water is a blinding shade of blue and easily the best place on Earth to live. Or at least that’s the opinion of the Hector’s dolphins that populate the shoreline. Akaroa Harbour and Banks Peninsula host the highest number in one location, and swimming in the water beside them will put a long-lasting smile on your dial. PHOTOGRAPH: THE MILKY WAY The whole of Canterbury is a photographer’s dream day out, but the fun doesn’t stop come nightfall. The Mackenzie Basin hosts the largest dark sky reserve – the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve – meaning the stars shine spectacularly here. The Milky Way is best photographed in winter when it sits higher in the sky. Take the perfect shot from the deck of the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre.
SWIM WITH HECTOR’S DOLPHINS IN AKAROA TASTE: ARTISAN ICE CREAM A mere skip from Sumner Beach, enter through a small wrought iron gate and find yourself in Utopia Ice, complete with its pretty courtyard and swing seats. The ice creams, of which many are vegan, include flavours such as elderflower and Greek yoghurt, made from ingredients grown in the owners’ own garden. Welcome to the sweetest seaside setting in existence.
PACK: A DRY SET OF CLOTHES This one rule will see you right on a multi-day hike. For long treks, pack a spare set of dry clothes in something watertight. Rain is always a possibility and while walking in wet gear is bearable while your body’s warm, you’ll cool down rapidly when you stop. Arrive at your hut, or back at base, with a dry set of clothes to immediately change into. And don’t forget dry socks.
PAY: YOUR RESPECTS It’ll leave a lump in your throat, but the 185 empty white chairs arranged near Christchurch’s Cashel Street represent the 185 lives lost following the 2011 earthquake. It’s a powerful reminder of the city’s anguish, with each seat representing the type of chair its victim would have sat on: wicker chairs, stools, beanbags and perhaps most confronting – a baby’s car seat.

Canterbury
Ocean to Alps
Canterbury BLINK ONCE AND CANTERBURY’S PLAINS WILL ROLL OUT BEFORE YOU; BLINK TWICE AND MOUNTAINS WILL ARISE OUT OF NOWHERE.
A
bsurdly beautiful and incredibly diverse, Canterbury transforms its terrain much like a kaleidoscope switches patterns. Vineyards swap for coastal roads as swiftly as they do for vast lengths of empty plains. One moment you’re swimming in turquoise waters to rival Tahiti, and the next you’ll be shadowed by New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki Mt Cook. And while the ever-changing landscape is a given, the way in which you see it needn’t be assumed. You could soar over the region’s patchworked plains by hot air balloon, ski its snowy peaks, or tramp across the vast expanse of Arthur’s Pass National Park on a multi-day hike. Choose to boat across the glacier-fed lakes of Mackenzie Country, or simply fall into one of the Waipara Valley’s many vineyards; picking at cheese platters in a sundrenched garden. There are thermal spas begging to dissolve all your niggles, night skies erupting with stars, and just when you thought transformation existed only in nature, you’ll arrive in Christchurch: a city always on the pursuit of renewal. WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS
Coastal Kaikoura THERE’S MORE TO KAIKŌURA THAN MARINE LIFE, BUT IT’S A GOOD PLACE TO START
T
his charming seaside spot is densely populated with whales, dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and penguins, and is also known as the albatross capital of the world.
Sperm whales, dusky dolphins, seals and albatross all make year-round appearances, whereas orca, humpback whales, blue whales and hector dolphins are seasonal starlets. Venture to Point
Kean Seal Colony to observe the seals sprawled over rocks, or don a wetsuit and go swimming with dolphins. Giant sperm whales are a captivating sight whether you see them from boat, helicopter or
plane, and just in case you can’t fathom an albatross’s three-metre wingspan, there are encounters with the bird life too.
Albatross Encounter Kaikoura is the best place in the world to see multiple species of albatross.
Dolphin Encounter Swimming with and watching Kaikoura’s Dusky Dolphins! Enter the world of the dusky dolphin and experience the grace and beauty of the most acrobatic and interactive of all dolphin species.
Enjoy close up views of these majestic wanderers of the Southern Ocean just minutes from shore. Incredible photography opportunities and expert commentary.
Don’t miss these world-class tours – advance bookings essential. Sensational food, divine coffee at our Café on the beachfront. Quality jewellery, clothing, art and much more in our Gift Shop and Gallery!

two wheels will grant you access to anything from the family-friendly Kowhai Trail, to challenging uphill adventures towards Puhi Puhi Valley. Swap your tyres for hooves as part of a horse trek across
Kowhai Gorge, or grab a kayak and paddle out to meet seals frolicking at sea. Your own two feet can guide you along the wind-whipped clifftop as part of the three-hour Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, or go all-out on
a two-day tramp along the Kaikōura Coastal Track. If you prefer to absorb the scenery a mile-a-minute, jump on a quad bike at Glenstrae Farm for a 4-wheel adventure. Fully guided and fun for all.

The ‘craypot’ building has won two major interior design awards and was runner-up in the 2017 Museums Aotearoa Museum Project Excellence Award. As soon as you walk in the door, you can sense the pride and passion locals have for this place. Revolving exhibitions often feature the photos and collections of the people who live here. Uniquely, the exhibits include the restored cabin from the Taiaroa, which sank off the coast in 1886, a jail with padded cell and resident ghost, a replica of the largest moa ever found, and footage of the 1978 Kaikōura UFO lights. There’s social history and natural history, Māori taonga (treasure) and displays and artefacts illustrating Kaikōura’s life as a fishing and whaling settlement.

ONE OF A KIND How about taking a llama for a walk? After a quick introduction and familiarisation, Kaikōura Farm Park will give you your very own llama for a one-hour guided walk, or half-day trek. For budding scientists, a kayaking excursion to Hope Springs in Whalers Bay will enthral; ever since the 2016 earthquake, natural gases have been fizzing and gurgling to the surface. aikōura and its surrounds lay claim to huge amounts of marine and birdlife, backed up by eco-tourism operators ready to take you out on an upclose encounter. For an experience of a lifetime, hop on board a purpose-built ‘whale watch’ catamaran to view the giant sperm whales, or take to the air to get a bird’s-eye view of their magnificence. With wetsuits provided, you can join a tour
and swim with dusky dolphins, the most delightfully exuberant characters of the Southern Ocean. These dolphins are found in Kaikōura waters in pods of up to several hundred strong, and although they shy away from flailing hands, if you swim with your arms by your side and sing them a song through your snorkel, their curiosity is likely to get the better of them. You can also take a tour to view fur seals as
they frolic and swim close to the boat, or learn all about the imposing royal albatross – with its massive wingspan – by taking a fascinating cruise. There are many other birds to impress as well, from petrels and terns, to shags and shearwaters. Whatever you choose to do while you’re in Kaikōura, getting out on the water amongst the wildlife is essential. 146 Beach Rd, Kaikoura P: 03 319 5429 E: alpine.kaikoura@xtra.co.nz • Spacious & private with ample parking. 12 ground-floor units (studios, 1 & 2-brms, 2 wheelchair access units). abulous food and wine, alpine villages and rocky limestone outcrops – Hurunui has plenty to explore and it starts just north of Christchurch. Flanked by the Southern Alps and Pacific Ocean, the natural beauty of this region is remarkable. Hurunui is where you’ll find popular South Island destinations, the most famous being the alpine spa village, Hanmer Springs. Indulge in some of the thermal resort’s hot spots before entering the Lewis Pass – your gateway to the West Coast and Nelson. Another destination not to be missed is the renowned

North Canterbury wine region, a master class in cool climate winemaking. Cheviot is more than just a Hurunui stop-off. If fishing is your thing, then check out the Hurunui River that offers superb fishing and whitebaiting. Visit Mt Beautiful Two Rivers Café & Wine Tasting Room for a world-class tipple. Gore Bay is a safe surfing beach with wild pounding surf at one end of the spectrum and peaceful streams at the other. The southern end of the bay is the area known as the Cathedrals due to the organ pipe shapes.
HURUNUI
ccording to Māori legend, Hurunui was one of two dogs which were left by the Maori explorer Kupe when he returned to the traditional Māori homeland of Hawaiki. Another explanation is that the name is derived from ‘flowing hair’ (huru, hair) because the wind-blown red tussock that grew in the area had the appearance of flowing locks of hair when viewed from the hills.

his serene alpine village is a haven for recreation, whether that’s melting into a soothing spa pool, or charging up Conical Hill in pursuit of impressive views. The thermal retreats are world-class and there are countless ways to cover the terrain. Try mountain biking, river canoeing and horse riding – or the power of your own two feet! The surrounding mountains make idyllic walking trails in summer, and powder-rich ski slopes during winter. Kids love to discover the sculptures in Hanmer Heritage Forest, and foodies can indulge on anything from Canterbury lamb to feijoa fudge from The Decadent Fudge Company. For vista-junkies, arriving here via the Lewis Pass certainly won’t disappoint. The jaw-dropping scenery is worthy of a coffee table photo book.

Distinctively different, this region has been called a masterclass in cool climate wine-making. There are 74 vineyards, 31 wineries, 10 cellar doors and four winery restaurants, so you can drop in for tastings and enjoy some wonderful food experiences. here is nothing more Kiwi than pie. Which makes Selwyn District an easy choice for the avid pastry fan. Home to the ‘famous’ Sheffield Pie Shop, with its secret recipe base and various home-made creations, it’s a must-do on your way to Arthur’s Pass.
Hungry for
Selwyn District
Once satisfied, your eyes are in for as much of a treat as your stomach. Selwyn stretches across the great Canterbury Plains and is bounded by the mighty Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers, with Arthur’s Pass National Park to the west and the thrashing Pacific Ocean to the east. If you’re embarking on the TranzAlpine train journey, Springfield’s historic railway station is your last point to catch it, and while coal no longer feeds locomotives, the Rakaia Gorge Walkway – famed for its Snowdon coalmines – is just a short distance away. With six stellar ski fields also in the area, winter sees the power-hounds pour into Darfield, and when the weather warms up again, Craigieburn Forest Park reveals striking mistletoe/pikirangi erupting into bloom.

n Lincoln, the community spirit is infectious. Twenty kilometres south of Christchurch, students descend in swarms for the university, while those without textbooks come for the history, culture and surrounds.
Even if you’re not a bonafide pontist, the engineering behind this great sweeping bridge will still impress.
Here’s a handful of bucket list suggestions to get you off on the right foot…
AVALANCHE PEAK ROUTE: As steep as it is striking, only expert hikers should attempt this eight hour trek to the top.
ARTHUR’S PASS VILLAGE: The village itself is your gateway to the park. Throbbing with accommodation and the starting point for many terrific walks.
DON’T MISS!
POULTER VALLEY TRACK: For seasoned mountain bikers only. If you’re after an easier peddle, take the Mt White Road along Waimakariri River.
OTIRA VIADUCT LOOKOUT:
little caves that the moa hunters probably sheltered in, volcanic precipices that form the walls of the gorge, an amazing array of native plants, a continuous chorus of native birds, and, of course, the Washpen Falls.
RAKAIA GORGE WALKWAY: This easy, scenic family walk follows the rim of the gorge through spectacular geological areas showing lava flows. It then descends into a gully under a canopy of forest and scrub to the site of the fascinating Snowdon coal mines.
MILLENNIUM WALK: A 10-minute jaunt from the Visitor Centre leads to a lookout for Avalanche Creek Waterfall. Return at nightfall when it’s dressed in lights.
DEVILS PUNCHBOWL WALKING TRACK: Standing at the base of a 131 metre waterfall is a refreshing experience, and wholly rewarding after a one-hour tramp through beech forest.
For lunch or dinner, The Laboratory might sound like an ominous venue for a feed, but this Lincoln-based pub serves a fine range of craft beers and woodfired pizza. If your taste buds fall hard for their brews, refillable bottles are available for fans to take home. Closed Mondays.
Kick-start your day with breakfast at Coffee Culture on Lincoln’s Gerald Street. This coffee drop-in is a big hit with locals. You’ll get a real feel for Lincoln’s great hospitality, and the region’s best bagels to boot.

CASTLE HILL LIMESTONE RESERVE: Just one hour west from Christchurch, home to rock formations created over 300 million years ago. Easy access means trails are suitable for all fitness levels.
WASHPEN FALLS WALK: Highlights of this walk include huge boulders of lava from volcanic eruptions,

or the ultimate adrenalin rush, jump out of a plane at 12,000 feet. Alternatively, go white-water rafting on the Rangitata River or check out the many mountain biking options.
The high-country lakes lure avid fly fishers, and if you’re happiest in your tramping boots, there are numerous hiking options. A scenic flight provides a bird’s-eye view of the magnificent varied landscape, or enjoy a day jet boating or horse riding. You can also get out on a golf course, including Terrace Downs, one of New Zealand’s best international golf resorts. Visit Trott’s Garden – a Garden of National Significance, and visit a vineyard or two to sample the latest Mid Canterbury vintage. In Ashburton, the new Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre is ideal for discovering the district’s history and culture, and with its strong aviation history, the Ashburton Aviation Museum is a must. he Rangitata River in the north and Waitaki River in the south of South Canterbury are two of New Zealand’s premier salmon-fishing rivers. In between there are sweeping plains, rolling hills and native forest with lots of ways to get out and enjoy them. Walking and mountain bike trails zigzag through the landscape and the townships welcome visitors with friendly southern hospitality. Hitting the shops for some retail therapy is a must in Geraldine, as the shopping here is excellent. If you appreciate stylish clothing made with natural fibres, there are a number of quality fashion outlets in South Canterbury. Some of the most sought-after garments are made with possum/merino fibre and wool skin. Check out The Tin Shed and Kiwi Country for starters. Arm yourself with a copy of the
& Wine Trail and discover sublime edibles in every pocket of the district. The quaint township of Geraldine has become a gourmet mecca – home to delicious local cheeses, fruit preserves and irresistible handmade chocolates. Get yourself along to the Geraldine Farmers’ Market – held each Saturday in summertime – and sample the area’s best produce, smoked goods, preserves and some of the finest coffee around. Barker’s much-loved preserves are devoured by Kiwis up and down the country, and the opening of the new Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery has only strengthened Geraldine’s reputation as a flourishing foodie destination. Find time to browse the Giant Jersey knitwear shop and The Vintage Car and Machinery Museum with its gleaming array of classic cars.

convenient five-minute stroll from Geraldine’s main street leads to Talbot Forest. Home to four, easy short walks and the largest tōtara tree in the reserve, this beast is an estimated 800 years old. Knowing that Māori used tōtara to build war canoes for up to 100 warriors will give you an idea of their
colossal size. Other behemoths include gigantic kahikatea, the tallest trees in the forest, which can reach heights of 40 metres. For more extensive walks, venture 23km north of Geraldine to Peel Forest. Boasting thirteen native forest trails, can you find the tōtara tree with a threemetre diameter?

he Aigantighe Art Gallery (pronounced “egg-an-tie”) houses a wide collection of art and is completely free to visit. South Canterbury Museum provides history buffs with a rich insight into the region and its people, including the legend of Richard Pearse, a young pioneer who built an entire aircraft in his shed in 1903. For those interested in the area’s Māori
significance, Te Ana Māori Rock Art museum includes an interactive exhibit and exciting ramble into remote farmland to observe caves and rock art. Finish your cultural excursions with a visit to Pleasant Point Museum and Railway, albeit a 20-minute drive from Timaru, it has “steaming days” where you can ride a restored steam locomotive just like yesteryear.
rrive in Timaru and instant relaxation will sweep over you. It may be the second largest city in Canterbury but there’s a distinct no worries, no hurries sentiment here. Visitors are encouraged to pursue leisurely activities such as feeding the ducks in the botanic gardens or meandering along Caroline Bay Beach, complete with
obligatory ice cream. Admire the sculptures scattered across the art gallery’s grounds as well as the Victorian and Edwardian buildings constructed from local volcanic bluestone. Then nip into one of the cafés for a few stolen hours with a latte and your favourite book. This is the stuff dream getaways are made of.

ALIGN YOUR TRIP TO TIMARU OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD AND YOU’RE IN FOR A TREAT. THE ANNUAL TIMARU CARNIVAL FRONTS THE BEACH AND BRINGS TOGETHER A MEDLEY OF FAIRGROUND RIDES, FIREWORKS, CONCERTS AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR A FULL TWO WEEKS FROM BOXING DAY. FOR ALL OTHER TIMES OF THE YEAR, DON’T LEAVE WITHOUT SCOFFING A DENHEATH VANILLA CUSTARD SQUARE, A DEVILISHLY DELICIOUS CREATION ORIGINATING FROM PLEASANT POINT.
imaru is considered one of the best places in New Zealand to grow roses. Test that theory at Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden at Caroline Bay. From the sweet scent of rose petals to a nectar you can taste, find out how beer is made and meet the Clydesdale dray horses on a tour of the DB Draught Brewery. Once fully refreshed, take a 20-minute drive north to Temuka. Originally referred to as ‘The Place of the Hot Ovens’ by Māori who used huge earthen ovens to bake the roots of the cabbage tree, it’s a fitting coincidence that Temuka is now famed for its pottery. Pick up some new homeware from the Temuka Pottery Shop. Or, if you’re more of a thrifty shopper, there are a handful of op shops which hide a wealth of treasures. Having already learnt more about his daring feats of aviation at the museum in Timaru, visit the Richard Pearse Memorial in Waitohi.

ou might think, as the closest town to Aoraki Mt Cook, Twizel needn’t bother to entice visitors with anything more. To the contrary, this purpose-built town is home to a myriad of standout qualities. As well as being a well-positioned base for mountain climbing, there are also mountain biking, horse trekking, skiing, hiking and fishing opportunities. In between cycling portions of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, or navigating a kayak across Lake Ruataniwha, you could be tasting just-caught fresh fish at the High Country Salmon farm, or clipping on your ski boots for a dalliance with one of the area’s four ski fields. Come summer it’ll take a lot to entice water-lovers out of the river’s prime swimming spots, while stand-up paddleboarding across the lake is just as fun – and just as wet if you’re a novice. If you have pint-sized travellers in your clan, the town’s real life tractor loves to be clung to, and the clubs at the Twizel mini-golf course are happiest when swung.

anks Peninsula was formed following violent eruptions of two volcanoes and the result is incredible scenery.
Picturesque BANKS PENINSULA
The erupting volcanoes formed the twin craters of the Akaroa and Lyttelton harbours, which have many smaller bays indenting the coastline. The Ngāi Tahu tribe had already discovered the charm of the peninsula before Captain Cook sighted it in 1770 when he initially mistook it for an island. From the mid-1830s onwards, British and French settlers arrived, creating the unique influence evident here today.
AN EASY DRIVE SOUTHEAST OF CHRISTCHURCH, BANKS PENINSULA IS THE SOUTH ISLAND’S MOST INTERESTING VOLCANIC FEATURE.
Banks Peninsula deserves plenty of time to explore all it offers, especially if you enjoy hiking. You can choose from short strolls to challenging walks through scenic reserves. Among the popular options are the multiple-day walks along the Banks Peninsula Track. The peninsula is a popular destination for a day trip from Christchurch or a long stay with accommodation options to suit all budgets.

Unexpected AKAROA
SHELTERED IN A POUNAMU-COLOURED HARBOUR AND SURROUNDED BY DRAMATIC HILLS, THE SITE OF THE ONLY ATTEMPT TO ESTABLISH A FRENCH SETTLEMENT IN NEW ZEALAND FEELS LIKE A SECRET.
A little je ne sais quoi.
A
ll is not what it seems in Akaroa. The name itself, which means ‘Long Harbour’ in Kāi Tahu Māori, might be distinctly Aotearoa, but as New Zealand’s first (and only) French settlement, arriving here is like descending on a French provincial village – right
down to the names of its streets. Rue Brittan, for example, will lead you up the hill to an old French cemetery. The Giants House, by local artist Josie Martin showcases her playful mosaics and at first glance you might think Antoni Gaudi once holidayed here. Indeed, European influence is
everywhere, particularly in the local restaurants, where a passion for fine food is rife. However, swimming with the world’s smallest dolphin, the Hector’s dolphin, trails rich in bird life, and bathing in crystal waters lapped by golden beaches couldn’t be anything but Kiwi.

7 Reasons to love Christchurh
Christchurch Arts Festival © Christchurch Art Centre
"Use the Christchurch Gondola to get to the top of the Port Hills. On a clear day the views are spectacular. Have a wander, grab a coffee or simply enjoy the panoramas." Graeme Abbot General Manager of the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa ANTARCTIC CENTRE: Experience a heart-pumping Antarctic storm and then ride the Hägglund (an authentic Antarctic vehicle). This is a journey to the South Pole for the slightly less intrepid.
shopping mecca is packed with boutique stores. All shopped out? Hit the sophisticated dining establishments.
traditional Edwardian attire.
CANTERBURY MUSEUM: Beautiful inside and out, situated in the city’s Cultural Precinct and boasting the world’s largest collection of Antarctic artefacts.
QUAKE CITY MUSEUM: The story of Canterbury’s 2010 and 2011 earthquakes is explained via moving displays, videos and survival stories.
NEW REGENT ST Its pastel shaded buildings will delight even the most discerning traveller, while the shops speak to wallets and entice their owners inside. A throwback to the 1930s, with Spanish Mission architecture and an air of glamour, this street is all style.
HOP ON HOP OFF: Freedom to see what you want when you want. Both the Christchurch heritage trams and the double decker-buses of Christchurch Soaring Kiwi City Tours offer hop on and off flexibility.
RIVER PUNTING: Glide down Avon River with the contented ducks. Your skilled punter will be dressed in
THE TANNERY: Where new wardrobes are built. This stylish
DON’T MISS!
SUMNER BEACH: Do as the locals do and take a 20-minute drive out of the city to the seaside. Walk the prom, and explore Cave Rock.

Christchurch
After the original Christchurch Cathedral was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral has a temporary home in Latimer Square, just east of the city centre. It is the world’s only cathedral made substantially of cardboard. The Sydney Morning Herald named the 700-seat cathedral the ninth-best new attraction for visitors in 2013. It is open to the public daily from 9am to 5pm.
CARDBOARD CATHEDRAL
The Anglican Church’s governing body, the Synod, voted in September 2017 and a decision was made – the much-loved Christ Church Cathedral, the city's most recognisable landmark, will be restored to its former glory. Workers have begun to clear the site, but the rebuild isn't expected to start for some time, so don’t expect to see the new cathedral any time soon. Restoration work could take as long as 10 years.

Christchurch WITH A SOLE FOCUS ON OUR AIR FORCE HISTORY, THE AIR FORCE MUSEUM OF NEW ZEALAND IS THE IDEAL SPOT TO VIEW A CLASSIC AIRCRAFT, EYE UP ENGINES, WEAPONS AND MEDALS, AND STEP INTO A COCKPIT.
Y
ou don’t have to be an aviation enthusiast to have a good time at this museum. The 20-plus historic aircraft on display are undoubtedly stunning, but it’s the personal stories and artefacts of the ‘people behind the planes’ – the men and women who have helped shape New Zealand’s military aviation journey – that will really grab your attention.
IMAGES: Air Force Museum © Sgt Tim Jordon RNZAF
There are plenty of opportunities to truly immerse yourself in the air force experience. Climb inside a Vampire or Macchi jet cockpit, test out a World War II bomber’s
gun turret, or strap yourself into the scale replica C-130 Hercules. If you’ve got kids in tow, pick up a Museum Hunt from the Welcome Desk - it’s the best way to explore the Museum together as a family. Don’t miss the ‘Captured’ exhibition, which tells the story of Kiwi airmen captured and imprisoned in
enemy-occupied Europe during World War II. This space is engaging and interactive, so take your own Prisoner of War (POW) mug shot, and no visit would be complete without a flight on the ‘Mosquito Mission’ stimulator. A free guided tour is a good way to get the most out of your visit.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS
C
hristchurch’s floral wonders are a source of great pride and the city was even crowned the Garden City of the World in an international competition in 1997. Covering 165ha, Hagley Park commands plenty of attention. Just minutes from the CBD, its beauty is particularly impressive when spring arrives. Hagley Park is used for events such as Christmas In The Park and sports games, including golf, rugby and cricket in the new international standard Hagley Oval.
The Botanic Gardens have an impressive collection of trees, flowers and other flora from throughout the world and the 21ha surrounds allow you to ‘lose yourself’ and become immersed in the peaceful ambience. The Visitor Centre here, which opened in 2014, is an incredibly beautiful, architecturally designed building with a function space and dedicated gallery with displays exploring Christchurch’s world of plants. There’s also a great café and gift shop selling botanically themed giftware. The centre is also a hub for the operational side of the gardens.

Don’t miss the Court Theatre, which has been part of the fabric of Christchurch for over 40 years. Court productions have ranged from local shows to international classics and New Zealand’s longest-running comedy show, Scared Scriptless. It's located in Addington, an area that's been redeveloped with a post-earthquake scene of bars and restaurants. Orangetheory Stadium, Horncastle Arena and Addington Raceway are also in the area. If you feel like a fun night out, catch a show at the 110-year-old Isaac Theatre Royal in Gloucester St. This ‘Grand Old Lady’ has undergone a $40 million rebuild and restoration project, which earned it the prestigious Saved and Restored Award at the 2016 Canterbury Heritage Awards.
