STEP OUTDOORS: How to find nature in Auckland

From rugged beaches to a sparkling harbour dotted with treasured islands and the peaks of volcanoes popping up in between, Auckland is a region of natural contrast.

1. Climb Auckland's volcanoes

There are 48 dormant volcanoes in Auckland, and no visit to this region is complete without visiting at least one – photographs from the top are always astounding. Hop on a ferry to Rangitoto Island, climb to the summit of Maungawhau (Mt Eden), take a picnic to Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) or explore tunnels by torchlight at North Head.

2. Make tracks

Auckland is full of fantastic walks. Skim the edges of Ōrakei Basin via bridges and boardwalks and then pop into Benson Rd Deli (a local favourite) for coffee. Embark on the 5km Heritage Walk between Point Erin Pools and Parnell Baths, or step it up a gear with the 16km Coast to Coast Walkway leading from one harbour to another. 3. Download the app

Download the Pūkete Taiao o Tāmaki Makaurau app to discover the flora, fauna and culture of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Learn Te Reo pronunciation and discover must-see green spaces. Available for both Apple and Android.

4. Help us fight Kauri Dieback Disease

Kauri dieback disease is killing kauri trees in many of our regional parks (such as Waitākere Ranges Regional Park and the Hunua Ranges Regional Park). The closure of some tracks and the creation of protection zones helps prevent the spread of the disease, but you too can play your part to save kauri. Clean your shoes, bike tyres and equipment before and after visiting, use the cleaning stations on major tracks, stay on the boardwalk and off kauri roots.
