Above: Mingyu Du & Joseph Khawane Thirteen student designers from the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, debuted their collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week on Friday February 07 at New York’s Lincoln Center. Mingyu Du and Joseph Khawane used army tent, parachutes and cotton canvas to create a 1960s inspired womenswear collection.


Jaci Hodges & Nisha Hanna Btesh  Jaci Hodges collaborated with Nisha Hanna Btesh to create a collection that makes use of Shibori, a Japanese technique of resistance dyeing.

Earnest Haung Earnest Haung, from Taiwan, showed a womenswear collection comprised of natural materials such as leather, wool and cotton, juxtaposed with man-made fabrics such as Phifertex and viscose. Bosnia-born designer Arijana Kajdic presented her womenswear collection that plays homage to the women who nurtured her, particularly her grandmother. The pieces contained a large amount of handwork including dyeing and beading.


Elizabeth Castellon Elizabeth Castellon’s menswear collection made use of leather and wool as well as upholstery fabrics. Elizabeth drew inspiration from futuristic architecture and themes from 1930s sportswear when constructing her garments. Frank Tsai collaborated with textile designer Andrea Nieto to create his menswear range inspired by an international photography collection titled Beauty in Decay. Flora Cervantes’ collection drew inspiration from the twisted shapes found in nature.

Jasmine Gonzales Jasmine Gonzales gave her womenswear collection a very personal touch. Her collection included hand-knitted pieces, hand-made yarns and hand-dyed velvet.
