The fashion designer and dog lover opens up her Downtown Los Angeles studio to The Spoiled Life. Maria Korovilas launched her eponymous line, Korovilas, in 2012, and was quickly dubbed one of Gen Art’s fresh faces in fashion. Since then, the Los Angeles-based fashion designer has been hard at work creating a carefully curated collection. Maria remains a breath of fresh air in the trend-driven fashion landscape. Feminine pieces are done in classic silhouettes, emphasizing beautiful textiles and craftsmanship, a nod to her background in couture. Korovilas’ designs are just as elegant as they are conscious — all her garments are produced locally in Los Angeles. Although Maria typically works a 12-hour day, she still takes time between creating her collection to spend time with her pint-sized pup, Elizabeth, and to treat herself to the occasional sweet indulgence.
My favorite party companions are dogs, because they handle all the conversation. When I need to get away, I book a flight straight to New York City. I actually find the hustle and bustle a relief from the lo-fi, calming atmosphere of Los Angeles. I like to hole up at the Jane Hotel and just wander the streets. Getting lost is a lost art. My favorite sweet indulgence is cookies. Any kind. I am the real life Cookie Monster. My last splurge was vintage Mongolian indigo textiles. I was on a mission at the last Rose Bowl flea market to hunt down this guy I saw with loads of them months ago. I kept dreaming about them and we ran into him at the midnight hour. To give back, I am constantly giving things away. It makes me happy to give people things. Boosting morale can take many forms, but that’s how I give back best. Pay it forward, you know? Giving back for me isn’t an act here and there, it’s a commitment in the best way you can commit and mean it. Beauty wise, I can’t live without my Dermalogica skincare routine. It’s the only thing that has ever truly worked for me consistently. Currently I am most passionate about my business and working hard for the dream! My top three designers right now are Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tischi, and Marc Jacobs. My go to toast is “thank you universe and the laws of attraction!” Spoiling myself means allowing myself to take a day off and indulging in a massage. I love those days.
