Since 2005, the School of Fashion has premiered the collec<ons of students and recent graduates during New York Fashion Week. For the Fall 2014 season, 13 designers presented eight collec<ons; of the collec<ons, four were collabora<ons between Fashion Design and Tex<le Design students. In total, six womenswear and two menswear collec<ons were presented.
The Designers
Frank Tsai, M.F.A. Fashion Design, was born and raised in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Before aRending Academy of Art University, he earned a B.S. Degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising, was awarded high honors for his undergraduate fashion show, and worked as the marke<ng manager for FU YU Clothing Company. His Fall 2014 menswear collec<on was inspired by the mood and emo<on of an interna<onal photography collec<on, en<tled “Beauty in Decay.” He collaborated with Andrea Nieto, B.F.A. Tex<le Design, who created the tex<les for their collec<on. Andrea Nieto, B.F.A. Tex<le Design, grew up in Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. She is on the Academy of Art University President's Honor List with a GPA of 3.855, and was recently awarded a $10,000 scholarship through the YMA Scholarship Fund as a Geoffrey Beene Na4onal Scholar. For the 2013 Gradua<on Fashion Show, Andrea created the tex<le designs for B.F.A. Fashion Design student Shumpei Okamoto's senior collec<on. Her work in the 2013 show earned her an internship at BCBGMAXAZRIA, which was offered to her aber show aRendees Max and Lubov Azria viewed her work. For Fall 2014, she collaborated on a collec<on with Frank Tsai, M.F.A. Fashion Design; her tex<le designs were inspired by personal struggle, raw emo<on, and the different stages of the healing process.
The Designers Mingyu Du, M.F.A. Fashion Design, is originally from Qinhdao, China. Before coming to Academy of Art University, she had received a B.F.A. in Fine Art and Calligraphy and won the Na<onal Dragon Cup Pain<ng Calligraphy Compe<<on in Beijing, China. For her Fall 2014 collec<on, she used unique materials including an army tent, a wool blanket, a parachute, and coRon canvas. She was inspired by the mod fashions of the 1960s as well as the aitude and freedom of the youth from that period. She collaborated with Joseph Khawane, M.F.A. Tex<le Design, who created the tex<les for their womenswear collec<on. Joseph Khawane, M.F.A. Tex<le Design, was born in Fairfax, VA, and grew up in Bal<more, MD. Aber earning his B.F.A. in Fashion Design, he worked on theatre set and costume design, as well as millinery produc<on. His design internship with Aysha Saeed in New York City inspired him to pursue his M.F.A. degree at Academy of Art University. For Fall 2014, he collaborated with Mingyu Du, M.F.A. Fashion Design, on a womenswear collec<on and developed tex<les with a focus on texture. His tex<les were created with military elements, oben using fabrics in unconven<onal ways. Addi<onal inspira<on was drawn from Ghanaian sculptor El Anatsui, and Syrian contemporary ar<st Diana Al-‐Hadid.

Tex<le Design, on a womenswear collec<on that was created with the use of Shibori, the Japanese technique of resistance fel<ng. Jaci was inspired by the excess of prints worn during the late 1960s, in par<cular to those seen on the Brady Bunch, and the costumes worn by Mia Farrow in the film Dandy in Aspic. She aimed for her garments to be mix of sophis<ca<on and quirkiness. Nisha Hanna Btesh, B.F.A. Tex<le Design, is a California na<ve, born and raised in San Diego. During her <me as a student at Academy of Art University, she created her own t-‐shirt line, Company Cream, and designed repurposed garments from items donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in San Francisco to benefit the organiza<on’s charity auc<on Discarded to Divine. Her vibrant tex<le designs mix perfectly with the design aesthe<c of Jaci Hodges, M.F.A. Fashion Design, for their collabora<ve, 1960s-‐inspired womenswear collec<on.
The Designers Earnest Huang, M.F.A. Fashion Design, was born in Taichung, Taiwan. Before aRending Academy of Art University, he had completed his B.A. in Humani<es and Social Sciences. He collaborated with Hong Ni, M.F.A. Tex<le Design, on a Fall 2014 womenswear collec<on. His pieces are comprised of natural materials such as leather, wool, and coRon, as well as man-‐made fabrics Phifertex and Viscose. The collec<on’s aesthe<c was inspired by his personal travels to Hong Kong. Addi<onally, his designs drew on his background in sociology, rethinking the rela<onship between spaces, social classes and people. Hong Ni, M.F.A. Tex<le Design, is from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. She holds a B.F.A. in Tex<le Design and an M.F.A. in Tex<le Interior Design and Fashion Trend Research. Her many accomplishments include earning the 2010 Chinese Na<onal Art Exhibi<on Award, teaching at her undergraduate alma mater, and being the chief designer for two fashion companies, LingLuoHui and Dacheng Cityscape Design LLC. While a student at Academy of Art University, her 3.78 GPA earned her a spot on the President’s Honor List. Her tex<les for the Fall 2014 collabora<ve womenswear collec<on with Earnest Huang, M.F.A. Fashion Design, were inspired by the scale and fine details of aerial view photography as well as contour maps of the countryside.
The Designers Flora Cervantes, M.F.A. Fashion Design, grew up in Warwick, NY. Before aRending Academy of Art University, she earned a B.A. in Interna<onal Poli<cal Economy and Business Administra<on, and an A.F.A in Fashion Design. She con<nually draws inspira<on from the environment, especially the raw griRy textures of the city. She collaborated with Lori Solem, M.F.A Fashion and Tex<le Design, on a Fall 2014 womenswear collec<on constructed from canvas, coRon, wool, and latex. She found inspira<on in both the twisted shapes found in nature as well as the way human emo<ons are bent and gnarled by life experiences. Lori Solem, M.F.A. Fashion and Tex<le Design, hails from Sumas, WA. Before coming to Academy of Art University, she earned a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Fashion Design, Sustainability, and Social Accountability. She has also studied art, par<cipated in an interna<onal art show in Florence Italy, worked as a show coordinator and fashion designer for Vancouver Fashion Week, and has completed a fashion design internship with gr.dano, and a tex<le design internship with Chum’s Design and Prin<ng Company. Before aRending Academy of Art University, she graduated from The High School of Fashion Industries, and then went on to complete her B.S. in Human Ecology, with a concentra<on in Fashion Design. Her Fall 2014 menswear collec<on is comprised of leather, a variety of wools, and upholstery fabrics. She took inspira<on from futuris<c architecture, interiors, sculptures, and also incorporated themes from 1930s sportswear. Her goal was to the classic tailoring elements that tradi<onally embody menswear with an abstract, futuris<c appearance. Jasmine Gonzalez, M.F.A. Fashion and Knitwear Design, grew up in San Jose, CA. The main details of her knits were taken from the design of Fabergé eggs, while the oversized silhoueRes were inspired by her reinterpreta<on of tradi<onal Inuit outerwear.
The Designers
Arijana Kajdić , M.F.A Fashion Design, was born in Velika Kladusa, Bosnia. At six years old, her family immigrated to Ravensburg, Germany where they received asylum un<l the end of the Bosnian War. French lace company Sophie HalleRe provided the lace in her collec<on, and other fabrics used include alpaca, mohair, wool, sui<ng, coRon, silk, and gauze. ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY
A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN
It all builds into a frenzy — spectators squeezing up front, models and designers primping to make everything just so — and then the rush unleashes onstage. The hair, makeup, clothes and strut all come together, and in the end, a lone lint remover is the last sign of a fetching event.
NEW YORK — San Francisco’s Academy of Art University’s fashion show at Lincoln Center has become one of the must-attend events of New York Fashion Week since the school’s debut in 2005. The quality of the collections continues to attract attention from both San Franciscans who make annual trips for the occasion and New York celebrities looking for the next up-and-coming designers. This year, 13 designers presented to a celebrity-filled house on Feb. 7; four collections featured collaborations between fashion and textile design students and graduates. The show started with a standout pop of pop culture with Jaci Hodges and Nisha Hanna Btesh’s psychedelic, shibori-felted collection inspired by “The Brady Bunch.” The mood changed dramatically with Frank Tsai and Andrea Nieto’s urban decayed menswear, which made use of laser-printing technology in subtle herringbone details. Arijana Kajdic experimented with masculine-feminine balance, juxtaposing hand-dyed lace and beading with relaxed, unstructured shapes, reminiscent of early 1980s Japanese experimental fashion. Flora Cervantes utilized a mix of canvas, cotton, wool and latex for her collection with Lori Solem, whose prints were drawn from the work of 19th century French illustrator Gustave Dore. Earnest Haung and Hong Ni mixed natural materials and man-made fabrics, including Phifertex and viscose, with a range of influences including Hong Kong streetwear, aerial photography, and sociological relations of space and class. Elizabeth Castellon tailored her menswear collection with an eye toward futuristic architecture and a nod to the 1930s. Jasmine Gonzales’ sculptural, oversize knits were created from yarn the designer made by hand as well as hand-dyed velvet. Mingyu Du and Joseph Khawane repurposed Army tenting, wool blankets and parachute material in a collection inspired by 1960s DIY youth quakers. Following the show, writer and man-about-Manhattan Michael Musto gave the academy the ultimate New York endorsement: “I only see two shows at fashion week,” Musto said from his perch in the front row. “The Blonds and the Academy of Art University.” — Tony Bravo The collection, above left, by Academy of Art University’s Flora Cervantes and Lori Solem blends canvas, cotton, wool and latex. Hurry up! Wait! Two hours before the models hit the runway, it’s a lot of hurry up and wait backstage at the fashion shows. There is the hustle of getting makeup and hair done, as well as rehearsing the runway choreography. Then the models just wait to step out before the crowd. Here are some scenes from the Feb. 7 Academy of Art University show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City.
