NEW TERRITORIES TOMORROW

Following the urban design programme’s aim to respond to the social issues in Hong Kong’s new towns, students explored their research interests beyond the design studio. This chapter presents a selection of student essays around a range of specialist subjects. They document urban theory, case studies and field studies that investigate the cultural role of public space, and the economic and ecological role of Hong Kong’s new towns within the Greater Bay Area.

The articles in this chapter explore detailed insights around issues such as public space and residents‘ sense of belonging and urban identity, the economic significance of new employment opportunities in new towns, and a theoretical framework for balancing urbanisation and ecological development.
