When an electrical element is used to heat a towel warmer or radiator you will not get identical performance as you would connected to a central heating system. There is no circulation and it will therefore take longer to heat up and will be noticeably hotter near the element. After 1 to 2 hours continuous use the heat would have spread but there will still be temperature variances across the surface but this is not a fault.

BATHROOM ZONES & IP RATINGS The bathroom is divided into zones based on a level of risk. Each zone has specific requirements regarding the installation of electrical equipment in that zone. The diagram below is only a guide. Please refer to I.E.E. Wiring Regulations for detailed information.
IP Ratings IP Rating: ‘X’ denotes level of security against dust particles. The second digit denotes level of ‘watertightness’. IPX5:
protected against low pressure water jets.

the area inside bath, sink or shower tray. Not recommended for radiator fitting. the area above the bath/shower tray to a height of 2.25m. Minimum rating of IPX4 should be used unless water spray will be present. In this case, a rating of IPX5 should be used. the area stretching 0.6m from zone 1 and above the sink to a radius of 0.6m. Minimum rating of IPX4 should be used here. the area outside zones 1 & 2. Assuming water jets are not to be used for cleaning this area, lower IP ratings can be used.

ABOUT THE STANDARD ELEMENT With a standard heating element the wattage of the element is matched according to the size of the radiator. It will then heat the liquid inside the radiator and the heat is dispersed by the surface area of the radiator. It has the protection of a thermal ‘cut out’ should the element become too hot, however there is no control over the radiator or the room temperature.

It is very important for the care and guarantee of your towel warmer that it is looked after in the following two ways ;1. The internal protection of the towel warmer / heating system It is a requirement of our guarantee (and all new heating systems) that the water within a heating system is cleaned and protected in accordance with BS7593. This is very important for all components of the heating system in addition to the towel warmer.
General Information
Care of Your Towel Warmer
Abacus recommend the use of Fernox water treatment chemicals for the protection of our towel warmers. Fernox are world leaders in the treatment of heating systems. To protect a system in accordance with BS7593 the system should firstly be flushed with Fernox F5 cleanser (or similar) and then system be re-filled with addition of Fernox F1 Protector (or similar). Please see opposite for details and prices of the product.
Eliminating magnatite Also if your heating system suffers from magnatite (black sludge) we would recommend the installation of a Fernox TF1 Magnetic Filter which will not only protect your towel warmer and radiators but also make your heating system more efficient. Magnatite (sludge) is a major problem with many heating systems and is caused by a build up of Oxides within the heating system. This can largely be eliminated by the installation of a Fernox TF1 Magnetic Filter. These filters will not only enhance the efficiency of a heating system, but also remove the harmful and corrosive magnatite which are a major cause of problems and failures. This is available in an ‘installer pack’ and comes complete with the F1 inhibitor and F5 cleanser which are required for protecting the system. Again please see opposite for details and prices of the product.
2. External cleaning and protection of the surface finish
It is very important that consumers are aware that chrome, stainless steel and painted towel warmers are not self cleaning ! Mains water can often contain many oxides and if a towel warmer is left wet for long periods of time then surface oxidation (rust) can form on the surface of the product. This can be avoided by using the cleaner that is supplied with your towel warmer as a sample. It is important that towel warmers are periodically cleaned externally to maintain the finish of the chrome, painted or stainless steel. For this purpose, we supply a sample of Peek surface polishing chemical with all our towel warmers from new. Further quantities of this can be purchased as detailed opposite. Just like cleaning the chrome parts on a car this cleaner is designed to protect surface finishes from chemical attack in a damp environment.
