The Motorcycle Lobby Team recently met to discuss proposed legislation to work on for the 2015 legislative session. We have chosen to use a process developed by the previous Motorcycle Lobby Team. This process has worked well for more than a decade. It's a process encompassing research, contacting other
Two bills are being worked on for the 2015 session. 1) Making a Left turn on a Red signal IF the signal fails to detect the motorcycle. 2) Removal of the handle bar height restriction. The Team is going to continue to meet with key Public Works departments in Arizona, Phoenix and Prescott Valley, and will soon be meeting with Glendale, as well. There will be a legislative alert sent to our memberships asking for their input regarding left turn signals that are not being triggered by motorcycles. The alert will contain specifics of how to report the location and time of day/night to the Motorcycle Lobby Team. Please
be on the lookout for the legislative alert(s) sent by the Team.
Bobbi Hartmann spoke with State Representative Karen Fann (D1Prescott) at Motorcycle Day at the Dome about the legislative process the Motorcycle Lobby Team uses when requesting sponsorship of our bills. Ms. Fann, specifically, told Bobbi the Motorcycle Lobby Team should do what it does best regarding our bills, and when the legislative session is nearing its start to approach her then. As always, it's Voting Season. Do what you can to help your legislators get reelected or help the candidate of your choice to get elected. Hello Fellow Freedom Fighters,
2014 TOO BROKE FOR STURGIS We hosted the 23rd Annual TBFS fundraiser event June 19th -22nd at Mormon Lake Lodge. Just as planned, not a drop of rain! Approximately 1400 folks came out, a lively mix of over 30 motorcycle clubs and riding associations, as well as independents. I can’t think of any other event in Arizona that draws such a mix of bikers. A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona represents “All Bikes, All Riders”, and our guests are a testament to that. All are welcome here.
The TBFS Committee member volunteers put their heart and soul into making this event better every year. We meet every month or more, year-round and work endlessly Wednesday thru Sunday the week of the event to ensure smooth operations. Please thank these members when you see them; Mike Schneider, Jim Silk, Vic Grady, Steve “Muskrat” Musgrave, Paul & Sandy Hassinger, Clyde Brooks, Tim O’Reilly, Charity Stuart, Dan & Lyn Petersen, Jim Page and MK.
Special mention to additional member volunteers who devoted their entire weekend to our success; Jean Cooper, Joel “JR” Rosen, Matt Brown, Ernie Lizarraga, Ron Kool, Sweet Pea, Rick Breadwell & the Sons of Hell MC. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS – WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!
Special thanks to our sponsors; Brown & Little Attorneys at Law, Law Offices of Richard Lester, Law Tigers Motorcycle Lawyers, Chuck Franklin, AZ ATV Rentals, Thomas Bishop Automotive, and Monkey Butt Radio. The Christian Motorcyclists Assoc. served free breakfast in the campground Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I know many folks really appreciated that. Thank you CMA and Desert Oasis
Ministries.
Sacred Bones Society MC signed up as an ABATE Club member at TBFS. Their roots go back to 1947. Check them out on the web. Welcome Sacred Bones Society MC!
We saw lots of new faces in the games, we like newbies, they’re hilarious!! There were several women’s teams for Tug O’ War this year. The Son’s of Hell MC won the Men’s Tug O’ War division for the 5th year in a row, and were awarded the rope as a take home prize. A great time was had by all.
We feel moving the date to June was a good thing. It’s been raining daily since the week after our event. We do wonder if people are going to show up at Mormon Lake Lodge July 24th!
2015 TOO BROKE FOR STURGIS The 24th Annual TBFS will be June 11-14, 2015 at Mormon Lake Lodge. We opted to move it up one more week instead of competing with Father’s Day weekend next year. We’re already planning something new: a motorcycle drive-in for Thursday night … old biker movies on a big screen under the arena canopy, popcorn, peanuts. It’s going to be fun!!
We need to start advertising TBFS 2015 NOW! So, spread the word – June 1114, 2015.

advancement needs more research before it can be fully promoted by MRO Lobbyists. Vic is still focused on Handlebar height as a priority. 4. The Lobbyist group is investigating the issue of left-turn arrows at intersections. They are working with City Public Works departments to address the issue of traffic lights not sensing motorcycle presence at traffic signals. The cities are asking that motorcyclists report traffic lights that are unresponsive to motorcycles. Record the intersection, date and time of lack of response. The report can be made through Vic. MK also suggested that the ABATE Facebook page be used for input on the traffic signals. 5. Vic discussed that the legislative survey he sent to Jean was supposed to have been presented to attendees at TBFS. Jean did not understand she was supposed to do that, so it did not get done. The survey can be published in the Masterlink with instructions for response. The survey can also be presented at Chapter meetings and responses gathered and sent to VIC for review.

Comments - from the Mind of Clydeman:
You know, here’s some food for thought. Fighting against motorcycle discrimination is our mainstay as an MRO. We had a rider enter the Slow Race this year, riding a dual-sport machine. I asked him if he could show me that the bike was street license and insured. He said, yes and his plate was current, so I waved him on. Turns out he won the Slow Race, just by
Well my friends it's good to be back in the mix. As many of you know I just spent a number of months in three different hospitals and have been going through a lot of therapy to learn how to walk again and to try and use my hands. The Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs was kind enough to buy me the Dragon program so that I could create articles since I can barely type right now. I believe that everyone knows we are in the middle of an election season. This means that there are large number of people trying to gain political office. Many of them are incumbents and will probably win reelection. There are a number of offices that have opened up because of term limits, retirements, and people switching what office that they're running for. This is a very good time to make friends with people who are going to be our elected representatives. I keep preaching that we need to show up at their campaign events and offices. What we need are numbers of motorcycle riders making ourselves known to those running for office. So often the only contact these people have with us are when we blow by them on the freeway with our pipes blasting and scaring the hell out of them. Karen Fann in Prescott is the chair of the House Transportation Committee in Arizona. We were trying to run a bill last session that would eliminate the prohibition on handlebars higher than the shoulder. She had no idea that this was actually illegal. She said that she had seen them many times on the road but had never met anyone who rode a motorcycle with high bars. She did not know that so many people get pulled over and ticketed only to have the tickets dismissed in court. When I told her that it was a de facto fine, having to take a half a day off work to go to court, she was stunned. But somehow when it came time to run the bill she became angry about something and said that we have to put this off until next session. I know that the Department of Public Safety put a lot of pressure on her because they use this law as reasonable cause to harass motorcycle riders. They claim that it's unsafe and that insurance companies have a hard time writing policies for these custom bikes with high bars. They actually have no scientific evidence to back this claim. My insurance company tells me that people with custom motorcycles tend to be much safer drivers and get in far fewer accidents than those motorcycles that are stock from the factory. This is where I left off before trouble found me and caused me to lose four months of my life. One other thing that we were working on was that Arizona can get up to
a tire. Then I heard some Boos from the stands.
Later in the games, I had a contestant strongly express his dissatisfaction about letting THAT guy in. Also, later at the awards presentation there were comments and Boos from the crowd when we handed him the trophy.
This got me thinking, the dual-sport/dirt bike/ATV guys face discrimination also. Land closures, noise restrictions, riding gear enforcements, OHV plates required to ride forest roads, much less the same bullshit we street riders face daily. If that guy was riding Lisa’s 250 Rebel, would that be okay? How about if he had a street-fairing and street tires? Maybe a

$210,000 per year for motorcycle safety and awareness. Previously that money was given to the legislature who would allocate spending and that when it was spent on was basically none of our business. I actually have a friend who was in the United States Congress and she sent a letter to the Gov.'s office of Highway Safety to remind them that this money was only for motorcycle safety and awareness and that any other use would be a violation of federal law. She was ready to drag people to Washington to testify before a committee on what exactly this money was spent on. The good news is that Alberto Gutier, the director of that office, decided that it should be henceforth spent on scholarships for new riders to help with the cost of rider training courses. We need to stay on the case with Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation to ensure that they follow through with this plan.
August 26th is the date of the primary elections in Arizona, and November 8th is the date of the general election. This gives us enough time to meet people who are running for office and to make friends. I have found that generally candidates love to see people on motorcycles. I once took a Hells Angel friend to a campaign event for some legislators from Tucson. They were overjoyed to finally meet someone who was only, previously, a mythical being to them. We need to change the image legislators have a of us. So often all they hear about bikers is what law enforcement tells them and we all know that they are generally full of crap and will lie at the drop of a hat. We also know that when we shine light on their activities they have to scurry like roaches to keep from being caught. If you have noticed the last two years at the Florence Prison Run there has been a noticeable lack of lawenforcement presence. What this means to them that we've cut into their overtime and double time, which means they have less take-home pay and it also decreases the basis of their retirement income. This has made them extremely angry, so everywhere they are able to have special enforcement actions they are doubling down on the amount of people that they harass to justify their existence. As it stands we have lawsuits pending against MCSO, the city of Tempe, the Tempe Police Department and the several officers involved in the harassment incident from last New Year's. We are looking for an attorney to sue the city of Mesa. The director of Arizona police officers standards and training advised us that in lieu of passing legislation to change their training procedures that we should sue the several agencies that have harassed us. The recent notices of claim bring this to a total of five agencies and one city. All of these cases have merit and a portion of any proceeds recovered from settlements or jury verdicts will be put back into legal fees to fund more legal actions. Right now the ACMC is soliciting money for its trademark defense fund because the federal government is trying to take the patches one motorcycle club.
They lost one time and took it all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals who told them they could not do that. The Supreme Court let the ruling stand and did not grant cert. Then some half brained judge told them that they should have worded it a different way so they did it that way and are trying again. This is the governments way of using their unlimited resources to break a group. They do this to individuals relentlessly, and generally what happens is that the person or group runs out of money to defend their cause, lose all of their assets, and agree to a settlement that costs them more than they've already lost. This is their intent with this current prosecution. They want to break the club that they are attacking so that they will agree to roll over and allow the government to take their property. Once this precedent is set it is only a matter of time until they sweep up all of motorcycle clubs in the United States. Then they will focus their attention on the motorcycle rights organizations that stand up to the federal government to defend the rights of riders. At that point ABATE will lose its name, and will be unable to meet, organize, or where any type of insignia that shows membership. Anyone who thinks it's only the Mongols who are in danger of losing their trademark is not paying attention. The one thing the government hates the most is organized opposition to their dictates. When Bell and Shoei show up at Congress with
Buell Blast made in the USA would be okay? Last I heard ABATE is open to any and all motorcycle enthusiasts. So, think about it!
checks for anyone who will vote for a federal helmet law and there is no organized opposition to stand up to them we will all be required wear orange colored helmets and those funky vests that the road crews wear when they're cleaning up the highways. I urge the members of ABATE to vote in support of giving money to this cause.
Other than that I would like to thank everyone who came out to support my daughter's in their fundraising efforts while I was in a coma. They used that money to pay my bills and keep me from getting evicted. They also use it for gasoline to come and visit me for the more than a month that I was in the rehab in Scottsdale. I would also like to thank everyone who prayed, sent healing thoughts, and generally hope for my health to return. I believe the only thing that brought me back to life was the concerted efforts of the motorcycle community willing me to return. Again thank you all, and with your support I will keep fighting for the rights of motorcycle riders. East Valley Chapter
Due to the Too Broke For Sturgis Rally, the East Valley chapter did not have a meeting in the month of June.
However, TBFS at Mormon Lake was a great time. Mary Kay and the Too Broke Committee pulled off a successful event, and the good weather during the rally showed that moving the date to June was a wise decision.
Thanks to all who worked so hard during the planning, those that volunteered their time during the rally, and all the patrons that just came out and enjoyed. All of you together made it memorable event of sincere fun and camaraderie, as well as a successful fund raiser for ABATE of AZ.
East Valley Chapter is finalizing the details for our annual Biker Bowl at Brunswick’s in Mesa for August 24th. Additionally, Jim Silk and committee is working diligently on our annual Hard Ass Run for October.

Hello Brothers and Sisters. Well Too Broke For Sturgis has come and gone, but the memories will live on. I know I made some good ones.
When the proverbial 5:00 whistle blew on Thursday, I slid down the dinosaur's tail and headed for my truck. I had TBFS on my mind all day. Having everything packed the day before; I got home, defunked, re-ragged, fired up the bike, fueled and we got out of town within one hour. It was a beautiful ride up to Mormon Lake.
Upon arriving, we set up camp and went for a walk around the grounds. We caught up with a lot of the staff that were busy preparing for the event to come. Let me tell you they were working hard too. After a few hugs and hand shakes we walked through the camping area running into many people we knew, and some we didn't, but all were getting set up and charged for the weekend. On Friday we had our shift to work and I would like to thank all of our chapter members that showed up to help out. After that we checked out the vendors and people games, then returned to camp

U.S. HOUSE VOTES DOWN FEDERAL HELMET LAW PUSH The Obama Administration’s proposed GROW AMERICA Act, a four-year $302 billion transportation funding measure, contains a provision to allow NHTSA to begin lobbying states and state legislators “to consider proposals related to motorcycle helmet use laws,” effectively overturning a ban against such federal lobbying on the issue that has been in place since 1995.
But on June 9th, by a voice vote on the floor of 229-192 (10 absent or abstaining), the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment offered by U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to strike that provision from the House’s version of the legislation; titled the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 4745).

On Saturday more of our members showed up just to help out running the bead run. That was a big help and I'd like to thank them too. That allowed a few of us time to go for a ride. We got back in time to get in the bike games and that was a lot of fun watching and participating. After all that we partied till the wee hours of the morning.
Sunday everyone was moving a little slow. I know I was feeling a little rough, but I'd do it all over again. After breakfast we had to pack up and head home. Packing up sucked, but the ride home was nice.
The following weekend a few of us took a ride up to Heber to visit a Brother and Sister that just recently moved to the area. We all headed to the Cabin Bar for lunch. I spoke with the owner, hoping I could interest her in signing up as a business member. We'll see what happens. All in all it was a great ride.
Remember all are welcome to join us at our meetings, which are held on the 3rd Sunday of every month, 10:00am at the Moose Lodge in Star Valley. Hope to see you there. Keep wind in your face, sun on your back, fuel in the tank, and rubber on the road. Wayne Slocum coordinator, H.C.C. ABATE
Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter
We had a great turnout for our first meeting after TBFS. We had several guests in attendance also. I think we were all in agreement that, although we could not have fires at Mormon lake this year, nobody missed the torrential rain. Mary K. informed us that the tentative dates for next years TBFS are June 11-14th.
We also discussed the problem a motorcycle club is having battling the U.S. Copyright Office over their logo. It seems if the U.S. government has any disagreement with what you do or call yourself, they feel they have the right to revoke your copyright. They have done this to the Washington Redskins and now they are coming after motorcycles. Our chapter voted to make a donation to the clubs copyright defense fund.
I also wanted to add something missed in my report last month. Our safety officer

also warned not to follow trucks too closely especially in the summer heat. Truck tires are more apt to peel in the hot weather. You could end up eating a tire.

The June meeting was held at the Kettle Restaurant on June 14th. The meeting was held on the second Saturday due to Too Broke for Sturgis being held the following weekend. The meeting started at 9:00 AM with the Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer for fallen Brothers & Sisters. Officers Present were Coordinator Jim Butsback, Vice-Coordinator Don Boule’, Secretary Deborah Strong, Treasurer Dawn Detelj, Safety Officer Jim De Young, Sgt-at-Arms Robert Guenther, BOD/PAC Sean Pinder. The minutes of last month’s meeting were approved.
The Treasurer’s report was read and approved.
The main item for this month’s meeting was Too Broke for Sturgis. We need volunteers for our shifts and we also need to coordinate with whoever will be driving and will be hauling gear and supplies. Those planning on attending were advised to get together after the meeting and make arrangements. Dawn is going up early in the week as is Bob Welton. They may be able to block out an area for everyone to camp. Raffle tickets were collected from those who sold tickets. We will still be able to sell up to Saturday at TBFS. If you need to turn in tickets please get in touch with Jim Butsback. Judging by what has already been turned in we look to exceed last year’s sales.
Safety Officer Jim De Young reported on Panic Situations. Studies have shown that TALKING TO YOURSELF in a trouble situation can help you get out of trouble. You know what you need to do but by talking to yourself you keep focused on the situation. There was a handout passed out for all to review.
Our Road clean up was held on June 14th after the Chapter meeting. The road we clean is in Whetstone AZ, just down from Buddy’s Bar. All members that participated had a lunch provided by the Chapter. The info from the road clean up was sent to the Masterlink and was in the July issue. We encourage all ABATE members to become more active and to join the MRF

“VISION ZERO” HITS NYC A controversial European traffic control plan referred to as “Vision Zero” has found its way to American shores, as NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has gained support of the New York City Council for his Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024.
On May 29, 2014, the City Council approved a package of new policies aiding Mayor de Blasio’s quest to end traffic deaths, modeled after a Swedish philosophy that treats all road deaths and
serious injuries as inherently preventable, the initiative has become the centerpiece of the new administration’s transportation agenda.
Among the changes approved, which includes misdemeanor charges or loss of license for hitting a pedestrian or cyclist, certain “exhibition behavior” from motorcyclists will not be tolerated under the law. The new rules governing motorcycle behavior outlaws “wheelies, doughnuts, burnouts and revving” -- a first offense would be punishable by up to 60 days in jail.

She added that the flag mounts that Zien used were not Harley products. “When you alter a motorcycle with non-compliant products, that does impact your ability to make a warranty claim," Blankenheim said. Zien currently has seven flags flying from his three-wheeler including full-sized Stars and Stripes, Don’t Tread on Me, U.S. Marine Corps and Wisconsin flags and an NRA banner that proclaims “Stand and Fight”, and he says all the flag mounts were installed at a Harley dealership.
“All they said was, because I fly flags on the bike, there’s no warranty on the powertrain,” Zien told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper on May 15. The “Million Mile Motorcycle Man” is ready for a fight to defend the right of all to fly a flag on a motorcycle without voiding the warranty. “Ain’t nobody gonna stop our flags, not even HarleyDavidson corporate,” Zien told the paper.
Harley-Davidson told the newspaper that Zien’s warranty is still in effect, but because of the addition of aftermarket products -- essentially, the huge flags -Zien has voided any coverage on the powertrain and transmission.
MOTORCYCLE THEFTS CONTINUE DOWNWARD TREND Motorcycle thefts continued to decline in 2013, a downward trend that began in 2008; and of five major brands only Harley-Davidson owners saw an uptick in the number of stolen bikes.
“The issue isn’t that the flags are heavy,” Harley spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim told the Journal-Sentinel, “but they provide terrific drag on the engine and the transmission, especially
According to new data released by the National Crime Information Center, an electronic clearinghouse of nationwide crime data aggregated by the FBI, overall last year there were 45,367 reported motorcycle thefts nationwide, the equivalent of one every nine minutes, down 1.5%, even as bike sales increased.
Of those stolen, there were 3,907 Harley-Davidsons, up 4% from 2012, while the percentage of stolen Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycles fell 2.1% (Kawasaki) to 9.1% (Suzuki). Honda was the bike stolen most often, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson.
The thefts were highest in California, followed by Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Indiana.
Thirty seven percent of the motorcycles reported stolen in the U.S. in 2013 were recovered, compared with about 50% of the stolen cars.

through 2023 in North America, cites a report last month by Navigant Research, a market research firm. Co-author John Gartner sees several reasons: consumers looking for refuge from high gasoline prices, increases in city traffic and improved e-vehicles.
Zero, the largest U.S. manufacturer of emotorcycles, has boosted production from fewer than 100 units in 2010 to more than 2,000 this year, notes Scott Harden, the company's vice president of
marketing. Compared to gas-powered counterparts, he says Zeros are cheaper to operate -- about a penny per mile -and don't make noise, fumes or vibrations.
E-motorcycles sell best in the San Francisco Bay area, southern California, Florida and Texas, says Adrian Stewart, director of marketing for Oregon-based Brammo, which rolled out its first model in 2009.
The U.S. market faces increased competition as BMW launches an e-scooter this year, and Yamaha plans an electric entry in 2016.
Also on the way are three-wheeled electric tuk-tuks, vehicles without sides that have canopies and are common in Asia. Netherlands-based Tuk Tuk Factory is partnering with eTuk USA, which is seeking road-use approval for three models from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

MASTERLINK AUGUST 2014
June PAC Report coworkers, and community if you are seriously injured or killed in a motorcycle crash because of lessthan-optimal choices about motorcycle safety gear.
By Handi
I live and ride in Arizona because we do not have a mandatory helmet law, but as a motorcyclist, you have many choices that greatly affect your safety on the road. And each choice has a consequence that could affect you and others in your life. As with any life-saving decision, it is vital that you make the best choices you possibly can.
There are personal preferences about which motorcycle to purchase –the new Harley Electric or another manufacturer along with model, size and color. Other decisions require consideration beyond personal preference – such as helmet selection, training courses, and highvisibility protective gear. In some States, laws about helmet use and licensing guide you to make the best and safest decisions. But even if those laws do not exist in your State, consider the impact to you, your family, friends,
HERE IS THE DATA???? ACCORDING TO NHTSA In 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed on the Nation’s roadways.
There was a 33-percent increase in motorcyclist fatalities from 2003 to 2012. During 2012, 93,000 motorcyclists were injured—an increase of 12,000 from the previous year.
There were 10 times as many unhelmeted motorcyclist fatalities in States without universal helmet laws (1,858) as in States with universal helmet laws (178) in 2012. These States were nearly equivalent with respect to resident population.
In 2012, there were 19 States with universal helmet laws. The average use rate of DOT certified motorcycle helmets was 89 percent in States with universal helmet laws, compared to 49 percent in States without universal
PAGE 9 helmet laws.
In a study of patients admitted to a shock trauma center in Baltimore, Maryland, 50 percent of the motorcyclists wearing a substandard helmet (sometimes referred to as a novelty helmet) received a head injury compared to 23 percent of motorcyclists wearing DOT-certified motorcycle helmets.
More than half of the motorcyclists killed across the United States in 2012 were age 40 or older.
According to the National Roadside Survey conducted in 2007, almost 6 percent of motorcyclists are estimated to be riding while alcohol-impaired (not crash-related figures) at night. This was the largest percentage of impairment compared to drivers of passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs and vans. In fatal crashes in 2012, a higher percentage of motorcycle riders had blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of .08 grams per deciliter or higher than any other type of motor vehicle driver. More than 1 in 4 (27%) motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were alcohol-impaired.
THIS IS THE INFORMATION THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO USE TO ISSUE A BLANKET HELMENT LAW NATIONWIDE. WATCH THE NEWS FOR SOME SORT OF ADDITION TO A BILL THAT WILL BE PASSED RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES.
Motorcycle Riders Foundation Awareness & Education (MRFA&E) was established to promote motorcycle awareness and education due to an everincreasing rider population. No one is more concerned with rider safety than riders themselves, and obviously those best suited to educate newer riders are veteran riders.
Promote awareness and education in the motorcycle community to improve rider’s safety. Please donate, we are a 501C3 Corporation. Your donation is tax deductible. To donate go to our web site listed at the bottom.

Riders Always Ride Safely: Its What We Do! In nature, vulnerable critters blend into their surroundings to avoid detection by predators, thus aiding survival. While this works fine for skunks and shrews, such invisibility actually makes riders more vulnerable to the drivers who might unwittingly take us out. They are an odd genome: hapless predators.
By Jim Silk State Safety Officer
Dressed in black leather and a graphitecolored helmet, you look and feel like a bad-ass predator. Piercing urban congestion, zapping past Prius's and dodging buses is all in a morning’s work for any ABATE rider. Surprisingly, despite you and your bike’s combined skill sets, you’re actually not the predator—you’re the prey. That’s because in any altercation with a car, you’re dead meat—and the driver walks away, sorry that he “just didn’t see you.” You were dressed in stealth black, after all.
So in a flip-flop from nature’s order, rather than hide, smart riders find ways to grab drivers’ attention, which means appealing to one of their five senses. Since drivers can’t touch or taste or smell you (unless you aboard Jim Hammonds Road Glide), that leaves attracting their gaze or hearing. Herewith are some well-proven strategies.
Hyper horns: Especially on older bikes, stock horns sometimes offer little more than an loud beep. But wiring up a set of ear-splitting air horns can roust even drowsy drivers fast. Time for a upgrade, loud horns save lives too!
Loud pipes: The classic bumper sticker, “Loud Pipes Save Lives,” is probably true to some extent. They are, however, illegal and don’t make many friends for motorcycling, either. And unlike a loud
horn, they won’t do much good in alerting a car that’s about to swing across your bow.
Neon gear: Some emergency vehicles are painted high-visibility neon, which, in conjunction with their warbling sirens, halts traffic like nothing short of a good miniskirt. A growing number of companies make high-vis apparel, and Cycle gear offers a fluorescent lid that soaks up light energy and then glows all night.
HID lighting: Your BFF may always have your back, but the brightest headlight you can afford will have your front on the street. High-intensity discharge (HID) xenon and light-emitting diode (LED) lighting are super-noticeable in daytime and also brighter than halogen OE units at night. The Harley daymaker lights work!!
Headlight modulator: You already ride with your headlight on, right? Legal in all 50 states, a pulsing headlight modulator from Kisan Electronics draws additional attention to your position in the space-time continuum. Brake-light modulators are also available.
Face Paint: Way back in 1976 a good ol reflector still works well,,add a few More good advice too,,,
The science of sight can teach motorcyclists how to become more visible. Robert Poulin, MD, an eye physician and surgeon who club races a sporty, shares some surprising facts. “As people age, the eye begins to block light, particularly in the blue end of the color spectrum,” he says. “So a blue bike or apparel won’t look as vibrant to older drivers as greens, reds and yellows.” Another surprise is that riders may be more visible at night than by day. “The dark-adapted eye is very sensitive and has a wider dynamic range for detecting light than the lightadapted eye,” Poulin notes. And finally, get a headlight modulator. “As a driver, I really notice bikes’ flashing headlights,” he says
So there ya go,,time for a new horn blaster,,reflectors, and remember ride like your invisible and everyone is out to get you. Hope you all had a blast at too broke, sign up a friend and make our organization stronger. Promote safety we need everyone!
Too Broke for Sturgis 2014 Game Winners
This year’s TBFS was a great event with a good riding weather, temps just right. I am relieved the date change worked so well. We arrived early this year with the big truck; a lot of the set up was done by Wednesday afternoon, in prep for Thursday. With vendors were rolling in and riders signing in, Thursday was quite a busy day. Setting up merchandise, registration, first aid and the safety booth was a lot of work.
After looking at the people games sign in sheets, I knew we were in for a good time Friday afternoon. The winners for this

Saturday’s Bike Games were a real blast! We had quite a turnout. The winners are:
full-size electric motorcycles. The millions of two-wheeled electric vehicles sold each year are almost exclusively scooters and low-powered bikes that appeal to Chinese commuters. But those focused on electric vehicle development say Harley has the marketing power to create demand, and its efforts to lower costs, build charging stations and improve technology will help everyone involved.
Zero expects to sell 2,400 electric motorcycles this year, a drop in the bucket compared with the more than 260,000 conventional motorcycles sold last year by Harley.

I want to thank all the riders who came out to play. This event is all about having fun with our machines (and each other). I also want thank our Game Team members this year: Jean, Ed, Don, Lisa, Wade, Kate, Rich and Sweetpea. And I would like to thank Paul H. for emceeing the event. He did a really great job! Harley-Davidson Introduces Electric Motorcycle
Reprintedd from http://www.myfoxny.com
By M.L. JOHNSON
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Harley-Davidson has introduced its first electric motorcycle, a sleek, futuristic bike that sounds like a jet airplane taking off and can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds.
The bike isn't in production yet. Instead, the public will get its first look at handmade demonstration models at an invitation-only event Monday in New York. The company will then take the models on the road for riders to try and provide feedback. Harley will use the information to refine the bike, which might not hit the market for several more years. The venture is a risk for Harley because there's currently almost no market for
"It does validate what we've been doing; it adds additional credibility to it. It is certainly going to draw more people's attention to electric motorcycles. The marketing horsepower of HarleyDavidson is going to be able to do things for us that we can't do on our own," said Scot Harden, vice president of global marketing at Zero Motorcycles, the top seller of full-size, high-powered electric bikes.
The new LiveWire won't make Harley's distinctive "potato-potato-potato" chug. Its engine is silent, and the turbine-like hum comes from the meshing of gears. Electric motors also eliminate the need to shift gears and provide rapid acceleration and better handling. LiveWire's design places the engine at the bottom of the bike. "When you ride a motorcycle, it's the movement of the top of the bike side-toside that gives you agility in regard to making turns. So, if I put weight low in a motorcycle, I can turn faster. I can drop the bike down and make quicker moves," said Gary Gauthier, of NextEnergy, a
Detroit-based nonprofit with expertise in electric vehicles.
One hurdle Harley and others have yet to address is the limited range offered by electric motorcycles. Batteries typically must be recharged after about 130 miles, and that can take 30 minutes to an hour.
San Jose State University police Capt. Alan Cavallo helped his department buy two Zero motorcycles and said officers have been "super happy" with the quiet, environmentally friendly bikes made nearby in Scotts Valley, California. But he said American riders who like to hit the highway would likely lose patience with the technology.

There were lots of fireworks this week with the IRS administrator testifying, the border crisis, Middle East issues etc. The fallout from the primary defeat of Eric Cantor seems to have settled. The Republicans have elected Cantor’s counterpart, Kevin McCarthy, as the new Majority Leader. McCarthy is a moderate from California. Steven Scalise from Louisiana will take on the position of whip. Scalise is a tea party conservative.
Our good friend, Representative Don Young, has found himself in a bit of hot water. He was convicted by the U.S. House Ethics Committee to be guilty of using campaign funds improperly since 2001 to the sum of $59,000.00. Young used the funds for personal use and failed to report campaign donations properly. Young is the fourth longest serving member in the U.S. House of Representatives. I can't approve of what he did but he is still a great friend of motorcyclists.
An amendment to end the funding of roadside checkpoints is at the ready. Senators Shaheen (D-NH), Johnson (RWI), Ayotte (R-NH) and Manchin (D-VA) have introduced an amendment with the U.S. Senate to prohibit the funding of motorcycle only roadside checkpoints by NHTSA. The bill that would be amended is an appropriations bill so the language expires with next years’ bill. The full bill was to be on the Senate floor as early as Tuesday, the 24th of June. However, the Majority in the Senate is insisting that all amendments need a 60-40 vote to pass and that the Minority would only be allowed to offer two amendments total out of the 150 that have been filed. The Minority refused this offer and the bill has been pulled for now.
The House Roadside Checkpoint bill (H.R. 1861) officially has 50 co-sponsors. Lets go for another 50! ==========================

The thermometer lately here in Phoenix is more red than not. And it's only July. Day after day of over 100 degrees will drain a motorcycle rider. Dehydration will settle in and that is hard to stay in front of. We've been telling you to drink water, stay hydrated, be safe. We even had a segment a while back on this subject with a few tips to stay cool while riding. With that said, I came across a pretty cool (pun intended) product I wanted to share with you.
Last week I was in Renegade Classics here in Phoenix looking for a new set of sunglasses since my Oakleys are getting scratched from sand, bugs and stuff hitting them. I was just looking and I saw a new display that Kelly had put up. Hyperkewl products! I asked her about the product and if it really worked. Immediately she started telling me about the differences between the Hyperkewl technology and the technology the other cooling vests use. So I snapped a few pics of her store display and decided I would do a little more research on these things.

Driverless cars Representative Bill Shuster, the Pennsylvania Republican who chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, brought the car to Capitol Hill to show fellow lawmakers cuttingedge transportation technology — and the need for better roads to drive it on. “This technology is coming to the streets,” said Mr. Shuster, standing in front of the selfdriving car Tuesday morning, by the U.S. Capitol Reflecting Pool, before the test rides began. The “autonomous” 2011 Cadillac SRX developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) looks like an ordinary car, but is equipped with software and sensors that allow it to navigate traffic without the help of a human driver. A staff member of CMU was in the drivers seat the entire time. After the Capitol Hill demo the car mysteriously would not restart.
IRS The House continued to grill the IRS over the missing emails that targeted conservative 501(c)4 groups. The irony is lost on no one, that the agency that requires every american to keep financial statements in a box for at least seven years, cannot find a group of emails from six months ago. I suspect that the emails were torched and we will never know the truth.
munity is over the moon with support for the measure. Congress has not raised the gas tax since 1993. We now have more miles of structurally obsolete bridges, tunnels, storm water drains etc., than ever before. The passage of this measure is unlikely but it sends a signal that times are tough and something needs to get done with our infrastructure and its going to cost money. No wrap up next week, its the 4th of July district work period. ========================== Washington Weekly Updates July 11, 2014 Highway Bill
Senators Corker (R-TN) and Murphy (DCT) have introduced legislation that would increase the federal gas tax twelve cents over the next two years and then levy the tax for inflation. This is a bold idea that is well overdue and unfortunately almost certainly an idea thats dead on arrival. With the economy still in repair mode raising taxes on just about anything is a deal breaker, let alone on something that just about every american uses. Not only uses but relies upon, we need gasoline to carry out basic everyday tasks and chances are most americans think gasoline is already overpriced.
However, without new revenue to shore up the Highway Trust Fund, it is projected to go bankrupt before the end of this summer’s construction season. The current federal gas tax rate of 18.4 cents per gallon has not been increased since 1993 and is not indexed to inflation, which means it has lost nearly 40% of its purchasing power over the past twenty-one years. The Corker-Murphy proposal would fix the Highway Trust Fund and restore its lost buying power. The average price of a gallon of gas the last time the fed gas tax was raised? $1.16.
Gas tax? Senator Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, and Senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, pitched a plan that calls for federal gasoline and diesel tax increases to shore up the Highway Trust Fund. This trust fund pays for most federal transportation programs mostly through a tax on gasoline. The proposal calls for a 12 cent a gallon tax hike. The idea is not popular with most on either side of the isle. The transportation com-
Senator Murphy has this to say: “I know raising the gas tax isn’t an easy choice, but we’re not elected to make easy deci-

The highway trust fund is set to run out of money before the end of summer. To address that issue both the house and senate taxing committees have put forth ideas to keep the trust fund alive. Both proposals are markedly different and therefore likely to stall tens of thousands of transportation projects currently underway or scheduled to begin soon. Both proposals fail to address the long term solvency of the trust fund and instead offer a band aid type approach that kicks the can down the road until about May 2015. No mention in either proposal of a Corker/Murphy type of ideas, which is what really needs to happen. Immigration has been dominating Congress this week, and for good reason. A bill that reportedly had wide support from house republicans and good portion of the House Democrats despite Democrat leadership calls for no support, was pulled late on Thursday. The bills sponsor Mario Diaz Balart (R-FL), a cuban american, scalped his proposal without revealing the details after House Republican leadership made the decision to not have a vote on any immigration bills whatsoever before the end of this year. EPA
Late last year the EPA put forth a proposal to lower the amount of ethanol to be produced. This was a departure for the EPA because of how heavily they seemed to want to force non fossil fuels on America. Well it seems a little bit of lobbying on behalf of the oil refineries is what did the trick. An investigation into the EPA is being conducted to determine if, in fact, the EPA bowed to political pressure from the well connected refineries after they lobbied Vice-President Biden. More on this as results come in.
After watching the video and getting the lowdown from Kelly, the next step is to look at the cost. I know from experience that some cooling vests can cost up to $75. And this one seemed no different. I even went to the Motorcycle Superstore website to check price since they are usually one of the places to get really good deals on products. I was impressed with the $45.95 price tag. I called Kelly and asked what Renegade Classics sells them for. Ready for this? The grey vest is $42 and the pink one is $44. That is $3.95 less than the online store. Add in tax and shipping. Hmmm. I think I will keep my money local. If you are looking for a way to stay cool this summer while riding, go see Kelly at Renegade Classics and ask her about the Hyperkewl vests. Tell her Monkey Butt Radio sent you. See you in the wind.
Mike for some but not so good for others. I took the time to watch Hyperkewl's video. You need to watch this:

"That's the deal with the cars; you can't jump in a Tesla and drive to LA, it won't make it," Cavallo said, adding later, "People want the convenience of 'I pull into a gas station, I pour some gas in my tank and I go.'"
Harley President Matt Levatich said he expects technology to improve and the company is less interested
in immediate demand than longterm potential. True growth in electric vehicles also will require common standards for rapid charging and other features, as well as more places for people to plug in. Harley expects to play a role in that, he said, noting that its dealership network could provide charging stations.
"We think that the trends in both EV technology and customer openness to EV products, both automotive and motorcycles, is only going to increase, and when you think about sustainability and environmental trends, we just see that
being an increasing part of the lifestyle and the requirements of riders," Levatich said. "So, nobody can predict right now how big that industry will be or how significant it will be."

Motorcyclist Clocked At 150+ MPH On I-75 Speaks Out
Reprinted from http://miami.cbslocal.com By Peter D'Oench
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) — A 19year-old motorcyclist from Miami Beach who the Florida Highway Patrol clocked at more than 150 miles per hour on I-75 on Monday near Naples says he lost track of his speed during his “thrill ride” and never intended to elude the troopers who followed him.
FHP also released dramatic dash cam video to CBS4 that shows the motorcyclist going so fast that two troopers were unable to keep up with him.
CBS4’s Peter D’Oench spoke exclusively with the motorcyclist, Santiago Guerra Pineda, who was arrested by FHP troopers on State Road 29 and charged with reckless driving and fleeing or eluding troopers at a high rate of speed.
“Honestly I was just heading back home,” said Guerra. “Yes I was speeding but I
did not see the cops that were on the side. At no point did I plan on running from the cops. The thing is when you ride the motorcycle you can’t let the motorcycle get control of you and at that moment the motorcycle took control of me and I just kept going faster and faster.”
“So you lost track of your speed?” asked D’Oench. “Yes,” said Guerra.
“They say you went at least 150 miles per hour?” asked D’Oench.
“Yes, that’s true,” said Guerra. “I could have gone that fast.”
Dash cam video shows what happened when FHP says Guerra sped by a trooper Monday afternoon on his CBR 600 Honda motorcycle. It takes the trooper exactly four minutes to catch up with Guerra after driving southbound on I-75 at a high rate of speed. The motorcycle is seen briefly on the video.
“He was at a hundred, over 150 and he went off around the shoulder to avoid me,” the trooper says on his radio. He is not able to keep up with the motorcycle.
Later, a second trooper spots the motorcycle.
“He just passed me at 135 going eastbound,” that trooper says on his radio. “The road is wet. I’m not going to pursue.” Later, that same trooper says, “Signal 14. My 2nd clock. He’s about 157.”
The Florida Highway Patrol said troopers caught up with Guerra after he ran out of gas and asked a passerby to help him.
Guerra gave a demonstration of how he was riding his motorcycle and how he says he did not see any troopers as he was crouched down. “Once you’re on the bike in this position, leaning forward, you can’t see the mir-
rors. You can’t see anything from the wind. I’m just looking forward. I am having a thrill ride. I do like the feeling of the thrill. It’s a thrill ride,” he said. “When you ride you are tucked in low with your helmet and the wind around you. And you have no visibility and the wind is hitting you.”
“The thing is when you ride your motorcycle you can’t let the motorcycle get control of you and at that point the motorcycle took control of me and I just kept going faster and faster,” he said. “But again at no point did I feel I was running from the cops.” He said he had only received one speeding ticket before and said it was dismissed. He said he is attending F.I.U. and also has a job in a restaurant on Miami Beach.

“My record is clean,” he said. “I’m a student. I work. I sustain myself and at no point do I want to get myself in that business because I’m not a bad kid. I’ve never been a bad kid.” FHP says it is alarmed by this incident.
Capt. Conner Cardwell said, “The concern we have is the danger not just to yourself but to the public out there in general as well as law enforcement. At such a high rate of speed it’s not going to take very much to cause a problem. Road debris or any unforeseen movement by another vehicle could cause an accident and on a motorcycle you don’t have the
protection that you have in a vehicle.”
Guerra’s mug shot taken by FHP shows him with a smile on his face. But Guerra said he could explain that.
He said just prior to the photograph, he was telling the trooper that he had kidded with his friends that whenever a mug shot was taken of them, it would probably end up on Facebook.
“So he went to take my picture and he told me to look up and when I looked on he said this one is for Facebook and that is when I started laughing just before he took the picture,” said Guerra.

He also said this incident was no laughing matter. “Now that I’m talking to my parents and my family and friends, it’s definitely got me thinking I have to slow down and maybe I’ll take a retreat from my motorcycle for a little bit,” he said.
“Definitely speed will get you nowhere,” he said. “Speed will get you nowhere and safety is something you need to think about. You need to think about it for yourself and the people around you.
