Here I am, back again to fill you in on what your Motorcycle Lobby Team is working on. To start, the permanent license plate for motorcycles issue is on hold for now.

The Motorcycle Lobby Team has a meeting on November 19th with D.P.S. to discuss the handle bar height issue. We’ll let you know how

January 12th, 2015, is the first day of the new legislative session. Please join us down at the capitol and talk with your legislators, every little bit helps. Call your legislators a couple of weeks in advance, make an appointment to talk with them on opening day. Show them that you are interested in what they do for us.

On Monday, November 17th, the Lobby Team meets to start working on Motorcycle Day at the Dome, to be held February 23rd, 2015, 11am3pm on the Senate lawn. We are working to make this one even better than the last one. It is very important that you to get in touch with your legislators around the first of February. Call your one State

Senator and two State Representatives and request appointments with them for Monday, February 23rd, 2015.

We’d like to have our children included at Motorcycle Day at the Dome. It would serve as a lesson in civics for the children, and show the legislators that we are real people with families and all the concerns and responsibilities that go with them.

Well, that's it for this edition. As always, keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down, and be ever watchful for cagers.

With much love and respect, V. M. GradyDesignated Lobbyist for A.B.A.T.E. of AZ, Inc.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FREEDOM FIGHTERS!

Coming to the end of my first year in office as A.B.A.T.E. of AZ State President, I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement that keeps me going. We have made progress this year by increasing our membership by over 10%, re-energized our Yavapai Chapter with “new blood” (volunteers), decreased costs of The Masterlink, increased profits at Too Broke For Sturgis 2014, and inspired new members into officer positions. THANK YOU “TEAM A.B.A.T.E.”!

We just revamped the A.B.A.T.E. of AZ membership application to appeal to a broader spectrum of motorcycle enthusiasts, and give a clearer understanding of what we are, and what we are not. If we’re going to continue to be a viable organization and grow our numbers, getting new members is crucial and everyone’s job. Hook up with your Chapter Coordinator for a supply of the new and improved membership applications. Keep one with you for those opportune moments when you can encourage someone to join our team. The easiest “fish to catch” is one that has been a member before. Reach out to those members that you haven’t seen in a while and invite them back to a meeting or event. The friendships I’ve made with fellow motorcycle rights advocates are the strongest and longest friendships I have. Most people will be glad you thought of them and eagerly take you up on an invite. I’m so glad AZ State elections are over, and we have resumed our regularly scheduled programming. AZ residents were bombarded more than most states this year with over 23,000 political advertisements. My US Mail volume is back to normal. (How many trees did they kill for all those mailings and signs?) Now if we could just get the rest of those street-littering political signs to disappear!

Which brings me to the next subject, there are new and re-elected legislators we need to meet. Your first chance will be on Monday, January 12th, 2015 at our State Capitol. Our new governor, Doug Ducey, will give his State of the State address and swear in all elected legislators. This is a big meet ‘n greet day at the Capitol. Wear your vest, be visible and approachable. Try to get appointments to meet with your State Senator and two State Representatives. Introduce yourself as a motorcycle expert. Tell them that if they see any legislation with the word “motorcycle” in it, that they contact us for our opinion.

Your next opportunity to meet with your representatives will be at Motorcycle Day at the Dome, Monday, February 23rd, 2015, 11am-3pm. This event has seen increased participation each year. In 2014, we had 37 legislators come out to our meet and greet. If you can take a couple of hours for lunch, come and join us. Numbers speak volumes. We encourage you to bring kids too. It introduces them to our legislative process, bringing in the next gen of freedom fighters. It is an excused absence from school because it’s a civic activity. It will also project us in a different image to the legislators, as family friendly folks. We held our annual member meeting on November 1st. Our guest speaker, Wayne Weirson, gave a high impact presentation on being a responsible rider, and taking responsibility for our friends, when we know they aren’t in condition to ride. It can be a tough situation, but please don’t ever say “I hope they make it home okay” and let them go. Wayne said one motorcycle club has a policy where if someone shouldn’t be riding, 3 members approach the person. One says “I’ll get your bike home”. One says “I’ll get you home” and the third makes sure the

during mailing. To send the pins parcel post costs $2.50 per unit. 2. Larry proposed switching to patches for a cost saving and ease of mailing. This change will be a cost saving for the organization. Motion: Vic made the motion ABATE will convert from pins to patches depicting the number of years of continuous membership. 2nd by Handi. Vote: all in favor; motion carried. Larry plans to meet with chapter membership officers to notify and educate them regarding the change. 3. For those who want pins, chapters can distribute the pins. Members could buy an annual pin for perhaps $1.00. The chapters can work out the details of ordering, stocking and distributing the pins. 4. Larry has edited the membership letter to include explanation of conversion from annual pins to patches.

Treasurer – Matt Brown –will send reports soon. Matt has been a little busy; his daughter Ada Mellony Brown was born 10/29/14. Congratulations! 1. Budgets were accepted by the BOD, all except TBFS budget which is coming soon. 2. Matt has been requested by the BOD to provide greater detail on monthly treasury reports regarding amounts held in the state account for each chapter. He will comply with next report.

East Valley Chapter

On Sunday, October 26, 2014, East Valley members gathered at the FOE building in Mesa. Headed by Joe, the meeting went well as we reported on and discussed chapter business, new and old.

On behalf of Jim Silk, Dawn Steed read the treasurer report, and overviewed the new Riders Advantage Program - a promising new program that looks to incentivize membership growth through a points system. Members will earn points toward a TEAM AZ course by signing up members, attending meetings, and volunteering at various ABATE events.

Dawn also reported on her experience at Meeting of the Minds. It was motivating to hear her feedback. Her enthusiasm was inspiring.

Additionally, East Valley members voted to be a sponsor for the 2015 Skin and Steel event at AL Post 2 in Tempe on January 17th.

Members nominated chapter officer positions for 2015. Chapter elections will take place at the November meeting.

We also approved having Injury Lawyer and friend of the motorcycling community Mark Breyer attend and present at our chapter meeting on January 25th, 2015. We invite all who are interested to come out and be our guest.

After the meeting, many of us rode to have lunch at Fat Willy’s in Mesa. It was nice time breaking bread and hanging out. On behalf of the East Valley Chapter of ABATE of AZ, I wish you all safe and enjoyable riding. All the best, Larry Keim COMMS, VC, PAC

High Country Chapter

Hello Brothers and Sisters. Up here in the high country we have been rather busy. We have had events and elections. It was stressful but we made it through. We did how ever get to go for a ride or two, so we were able to clear our heads,

Let me start by talking about our last event. HCC's Chilli Cook-Off was a huge success. I don't recall having such a great turn out for this event. I would like to thank the Spur Bar for all their help, hard work and generosity. They were such gracious hosts and really went all out for us. This is what helped to make this event so successful. I would also like to thank East Valley, and Southern Az chapters for attending. It was a pleasure having you all and getting to meet some of you for the first time. I hope you all had a great time and come to visit us again. To all our volunteers thanks so much for your hard work as well. Without you it would not have been possible. We had eight chilli entries and over sixty tasters. I was a little worried we wouldn't have enough chilli to feed them all, but somehow we managed. At our chapter elections; John Lacy was voted Safety Officer. Chick-n-bone was voted Run Coordinator. Forest (Woody) Phillips was voted Board of Director and

PAC. Mark Fickle was voted our second Sgt of Arms. All other positions were reelected. Those re-elected thank you for last years service as officers of High Country Chapter ABATE and your continuing service. To our newly elected officers; Welcome aboard and thank you. I look forward to working you. I would like to thank Billy Hensler for all his past years of service as BOD, Great job Brother.

The 1st of Nov, a few of us took a ride down to the State Election Rally and Board meeting. We enjoyed visiting with other members, swapping ride stories, mechanical tips and tricks, and old jokes. We also sat in on an informative seminar put on by Wayne Wierson on the 3R's. Afterwards we went out to the parking lot for a few Bike games. These are always a lot of fun. Afterward trophies and appreciation were awarded. Upon leaving we rode to the Maverick. We had heard they were doing a benefit there, so we decided to drop in. Then we fueled and headed back to the high country. Everyone had a great ride and got home safe. Yea, a busy month it may have been, but there is still more to come. You are all invited to join us for our next event, which will be on Dec. 13th THE BARBIE HENSLER MEMORIAL TOY RUN will be held at the Historical Journigan House, located at 202 W. Main st. in Payson.

You are also invited to our meetings, held on the third Sun. of every month at the Moose Lodge in Star Valley 10am. Breakfast is available at the Spur Bar at 8:30am. Hope to see you. Keep wind in your face, sun on your back, fuel in the tank, and rubber on the road. Wayne Slocum Coordinator, H.C.C.ABATE

Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter

Our meeting was called to order at 10:45 AM.

Johnny D. reminded us that the new legislative session start January 12th. If you can, be there and meet with your congressman and senator. We need to let us know that we are there and care. It doesn't matter if you are a CEO of some large corporation or an cashier at a fast food chain, let them know we are concerned residents of Arizona.

Motorcycle Day at the Dome has also been scheduled for Feb 23rd. If you can, take the day off and show your support of the motorcycle community. It was also election day. Mike Schneider will be taking over as Chapter Coordinator and Jimmy Page (not the one from Led Zeppelin) is once again back as our Vice Coordinator.

I also brought up a report on KPHO regarding bikers running ramped. I'm not sure how accurate the reporting was, but it's more bad press for us. You can find the report at http://tinyurl.com/lrrtsj3 Steve Palmer Phoenix-Shadow Mountain ABATE Communications Officer

Yavapai Chapter

Our November meeting was very productive!

Attendance is growing with participating members and we were able to accomplish nominations, for most of our officer positions. Yay! Jalene Gathman has stepped up for treasury, approved by BOD at November's State Elections. We are excited and confident she will do a fantastic job. We have a few new officers and some returning ones on the way... Paul Pendergast, Coordinator, observed a great "synergy" developing amongst our chapter. This will allow us to come together and have some fun in the new year.

December 14th is our Elections! We are looking forward to making all the nominations into official officers. To celebrate and end the year in a positive light, our meeting will also include a Holiday Party. White Elephant gifts will be exchanged, along with a breakfast burritos and an open bar. We welcome all members and any visitors! 2nd Sunday 11am Meetings @ VFW Post #541, 202 N Arizona St Prescott AZ 86301.

The Yuma chapter met on November 11th at 6:00 pm at the Kountry Kitchen Café in the foothills to conduct our monthly business meeting. MASTERLINK DECEMBER 2014 NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

CITY IN WASHINGTON SETTLES PUBLIC RECORDS LAWSUIT WITH BIKERS The city of Kennewick, Washington has settled with a Tacoma motorcyclist and a group of motorcycle clubs who accused the city of violating the state Public Records Act.

The city will pay $45,000 as part of the settlement of two lawsuits and will release some of the disputed records, City Attorney Lisa Beaton recently told the city council.

The city has not admitted any wrongdoing in the handling of the records requests filed by Edward Goehring and the Washington Confederation of Clubs (COC). Both separately sued Kennewick after they claim they were improperly denied documents, including photos and videos, that Kennewick police took when they cited motorcyclists in separate incidents.

ABATE of ARIZONA Serves to: Encourage political involvement of its membership.

Coast to Coast

Goehring was one of eight motorcyclists stopped by Kennewick police and Benton County sheriff's deputies in August 2012 and cited for traffic violations. And in April 2013, authorities stopped some motorcyclists from the Washington Confederation of Clubs and cited them for traffic infractions during a gathering in Kennewick.

In both cases, Kennewick police pursued information about outlaw motorcycle gangs, according to Beaton.

The city, Goehring and the motorcycle club still disagree about some records. However, they agreed to have a thirdparty arbitrator review those records to decide which should be withheld or redacted and then released, Beaton told the Tri-City Herald.

The $45,000 will come from the city's risk management fund. Insurance does not cover public record lawsuits, she said. About $12,400 will go to the WA COC, and Goehring will receive the remainder. As part of the agreement, Goehring and the motorcycle clubs will dismiss their lawsuits with prejudice, which means

they can't be filed again, according to city documents.

Goehring and the Washington Confederation of Clubs are represented by the same attorney group, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorneys Marty Fox and Mike Meyers.

CHIEF OF POLICE CANCELS OCEAN CITY BIKE WEEK "NO COLORS” POLICY A.I.M. Attorney addresses Ocean City's No Colors Policy... GOOD NEWS (Sept 12, 2014): The Maryland Confederation Of Clubs Attorney Mitchell Greenberg approached the Ocean City Police on Thursday, Sept. 11 to address the “NO COLORS” policy stated on the Chief of Police Bike Week Rules and Regulations page on the OCPD website. The matter was brought to a quick and friendly close including a personal call to Mitch from Chief of Police Ross Buzzuro who assured the Maryland Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney that all Clubs and Colors are welcome in Ocean City. Mitch in turn assured Chief Buzzuro that the leaders of each Club share his hope for a Safe and Incident-

NHTSA WAIVES BUY-AMERICAN REQUIREMENT FOR MICHIGAN RIDER TRAINING Because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that American makers don’t offer a small and light enough motorcycle for a Michigan Rider Training Program, the agency has approved their request to waive federal Buy-American rules to allow the state to purchase foreign-made motorcycles for their courses.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning will now use government grant money to buy a fleet of 20 Suzuki training motorcycles, though so-called “Buy America rules” say NHTSA cannot award any funds “unless steel, iron, and manufactured products used in such project are produced in the United States.”

However, NHTSA is allowed to waive the rules if they are “inconsistent with the public interest” or such materials and products are not produced in the United States in reasonably available quantities or “the inclusion of domestic material will increase the cost of the overall project contract by more than 25 percent.”

Finding that “a cost waiver is appropriate for the twenty training motorcycles because domestically produced motorcycles would increase the cost by more than 25 percent,” NHTSA awarded Michigan grant funds to improve rider training.

VIRGINIA COPS SPIED ON MOTORISTS AT POLITICAL RALLIES Documents released by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia confirm that the Virginia State Police used cameras to track motorists attending political events. Automated license plate readers (ALPR) are used by law enforcement agencies throughout the country, ostensibly to fight crime by finding stolen cars. But a March 18, 2009 state police memo also documents the use of the “Help Eliminate Auto Theft” (HEAT) camera to identify attendees at 2008 campaign events for then-Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. It was not until 2012 that the state police chief asked for an official determination of the legality of the license plate reader program, and in a February 13, 2013 ruling, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli

Many countries including the Netherlands have been clamping down on their nationals trying to join ISIS jihadists who have taken over swathes of Iraq and Syria. Measures include confiscating would-be jihadists' passports before travelling and threatening prosecution should they return.

Dr. Terry Goldsworthy, Bond University Criminologist, said the information being provided has not necessarily helped the crackdown on bikers. “[Crime Stoppers] have received about 1200 pieces of information,” he said. “124 offenders have been arrested in relation to drug and property and weapon matters, but interestingly though, only 22 people can actually be able to have shown to have any links to any criminal organizations - it’d interesting to see how many of those 22 were actually bikers.”

BIKERS VS. ISIS: “NETHERLANDS OKAYS BIKER GANGS TO FIGHT ISLAMIC STATE” The Dutch public prosecutor has announced that “motorbike gang members” who have joined Kurds battling the Islamic State group are not necessarily committing any crime. Members of the infamous 'No Surrender' motorcycle club are fighting against Islamic State militants in northern Iraq, and public prosecutor spokesman Wim de Bruin told the AFP news service, "Joining a foreign armed force was previously punishable, now it's no longer forbidden."

"You just can't join a fight against the Netherlands," he told AFP after reports emerged that the Dutch bikers were fighting ISIS insurgents alongside Kurdish troops in the Middle East. In November 1965, Ralph “Sonny” Barger of the Hells Angels MC sent a letter to President Lyndon Johnson at the

Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is looking for an Arizona State Representative

The men and women involved in the MRF's State Rep Program are dedicated volunteers from the membership ranks who are willing to give their time and energy to build, maintain and enhance the relationship between the MRF and all motorcyclists within their states. They must work closely with the State Motorcyclists' Rights Organizations, attending their meetings and events, keeping the SMROs abreast of national issues, international issues, and issues affecting motorcylists in other states.

MRF State Reps promote the MRF by all possible means, such as making presentations to SMROs and other groups. Writing articles for newspapers and newsletters, membership recruiting, and speaking to individual motorcyclists are other examples of promoting the MRF.

Arizona does not have an MRF State Rep at this time. If you are interested in applying for the position, some of the requirements for appointment are:

PAC Report

helmet law. According to complaints, the troopers did not understand the state laws well enough to properly enforce them.

By Handi, S.R.M.C. & A.B.A.T.E. State PAC Hello freedom fighters and welcome to winter in Arizona!

With the many toy runs and holidays on our minds, let’s not let the importance of addressing motorcycle ridng issues slip our minds.

January 12, 2015 is the first day on the capitol for our elected officials. Note this is not Motorcycle Day at the Dome (MDatD). It is a “meet and greet” day for the new legislation. Make a note to be there to make a showing for motorcyclists. And around the lower 48:

Tennessee: Troopers target motorcyclists,,,, State Rep. John C. Tidwell (D) and Concerned Motorcyclist of Tennessee/ABATE Inc. took on state troopers who were unfairly ticketing motorcyclists under the state’s motorcycle

and over.

Tidwell, who helped write Tennessee’s helmet law, explained to state law officials that helmets with other certifications were legal for riders 21

California: Assembly Bill 1646 passed the assembly and senate but was vetoed by the governer on Sept. 30th. This measure would have required at least one question to appear on written noncommercial driver’s test about the dangers of a hand held mobile device and texting. (important bill- vetoed?)

Michigan: On Oct. 7th a bill called “Nathan’s Bill” was sent to the governer for their signature. HB 5438 would require classroom instruction for new drivers to include information about motorcycles and bicycles and their presence on the road and “look twice”.

New Jersey: Assembly Bill 2280 enacted Sept. 10th requires all police vehicles that are used for traffic stops have an “onboard” or “on body” video recording system, to record events during a traffic stop.

PAGE 9 Yes, riding a motorcycle puts you at risk!! we know that!! We love to ride and ride to live, and distracted driving is currently at an all time high. In 2011 according to the NHTSA, 11 percent of teen drivers ages 15 to 19 who were involved in fatal crashes were distracted at the time of the crash. Currently there are 251 bills that deal with distracted driving. In 2013, legislators in 40 states considered 170 driver distraction bills. As of December 2013, laws in 41 states specifically ban text messaging while driving. Florida legislation passed this year requires secondary enforcement, meaning an officer may issue a citation only if the driver has been stopped for some other reason. so much going on for motorcyclists…..

More about e-15: the EPA has not issued the standard for renewable fuel to be blended into domestic fuels for the current 2014 year. The agency proposed a 2014 RFS (renewable fuel standard) of 13 billion gallons and the Energy Independence and Security Act calls for 14.4 billion gallons, experts say the EPA will set a 13.6 RFS for this ending year. The AMA opposes the sale of e-15 fuel and states that a mix higher that e-10 will run too hot in small and cause failure. Corn belt candidates for congress want the EPA to adopt a higher RFS. Missouri governer has sidestepped the state legislature to permit and encourage the sale of e-15. onward to 2015, Have a great set of holidays, a happy new year and ride safe!

Motorcycle Riders Foundation Awareness & Education (MRFA&E) was established to promote motorcycle awareness and education due to an everincreasing rider population. No one is more concerned with rider safety than riders themselves, and obviously those best suited to educate newer riders are veteran riders.

Promote awareness and education in the motorcycle community to improve rider’s safety. Please donate, we are a 501C3 Corporation. Your donation is tax deductible. To donate go to our web site listed at the bottom.

PAGE 10 Goldsworthy said they’d be quite different to QPS figures. He said the reward campaign has not had the outcome the Government anticipated… “This reward system has been highly advertised, and to only have one successful pay out, indicates to me that I don’t think it’s a success.” BRITISH POLICE APPEAL FOR INFO ON BOOBY TRAP Police in Totton, Hampshire U.K. are investigating after a piece of thick string was found tied across a road at neck height, posing a distinct danger to motorcyclists.

It had been tied between lampposts either side of a residential street, and “The string could have caused serious injury and even a broken neck,” according to the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG-UK). “It was spotted by a passer-by at night time, when it would have been difficult for riders to see.”

Coast to Coast (continued)

Totton councillor Chris Lagdon said: “The morons responsible must be tracked down by the police and made to face the full force of the law. As a motorcycle rider myself I know how dangerous something like that can be. It was an atrocious thing to do and I’m absolutely disgusted that an incident of this sort has occurred in Totton.”

Mog Morrison, head of the New Forest Motor Cycle Action Group, said: “If this was some sort of prank involving youngsters I hope the police or their parents take them to one side and educate them about the potential consequences of their actions… This sort of thing has killed people in the past.”

Totton Police Tweeted following the incident on Tuesday, October 13: “Unknown persons have placed green string across Water Lane near Bagber Road. Any information?” WEIRD NEWS: HORMEL MOTORCY-

CLE RUNS ON BACON GREASE Hormel Foods Corp. headed out on the highway with a motorcycle designed to run on bacon grease. The Austin, MNbased company created a new marketing campaign in time for the International Bacon Film Festival in San Diego in late August, and rode the bacon bike from Minnesota to California.

America runs on bacon, and so does this bike -- getting about 100 mpg -- and the exhaust smells like bacon! Hormel and marketing firm BBDO Minneapolis sponsored the world’s first motorcycle that runs on organic biodiesel made of refined bacon grease, and a team of 12 travelled with a rider during the trip to document the journey for a film, “Driven By Bacon,” which was shown at the film festival this year. Charlie Smithson of CSE Engineering and Taylor Bamber, Smithson’s work partner, custom designed the motorcycle based on a rare 2011 Track T-800CDI

MASTERLINK DECEMBER 2014 diesel model. Grease is an abundant fuel source, as hotels and restaurants in the United States generate 3 billion gallons of waste cooking oil per year, which could fill tanker trucks parked bumper-tobumper from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. and back. Hormel representatives say the marketing push is an exciting opportunity to spread the word about Hormel’s Black Label Bacon brand and the pig-powered hog will likely be used as a promotional tool in the future.

Once the film is complete, the motorcycle could be displayed at the Spam Museum. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote.” ~ Government posters in the city of Chicago (1928) - original authorship unknown

MASTERLINK DECEMBER 2014 As I get older this phrase holds new meaning to me and has become a mantra to making good decisions. If it makes sense. People who know me laugh because they have probably heard me say this over and over. “Hey what do you think about me putting a 300 series rear tire on my bike?” If this question was posed I would simply say “if it makes sense”. The response I usually get is “What does that mean?” So let me enlighten our readership so we in turn, together, can enlighten the world. If you enjoyed taking long rides on twisting mountain roads for hours and hours on the weekends to keep the wind in your face, then increasing the size of your rear tire to a 300 would not make sense. If you like to go from the house to the bike show and back, then perhaps this modification would make sense. I will give you a couple of examples. First let me start with myself and a purchase I am still happy with. I did not have the benefit of another Wrench standing next to me saying “if it makes sense, do it”. Early in my riding career I was all about accessories. More for the

If it Makes Sense...

look than the function of the piece. Being a born gear head I saw a bike with a hyper-charger on it and instantly fell in love. How nostalgic! The butterfly valve opening and closing as the motor revs up. I had to have one. I ride a fuel injected bike. The science behind this piece works in direct contradiction to the idea of fuel injection. The ability to force more air into the motor as it goes faster just makes the motor work harder to maintain the correct mixture. It doesn’t make sense. It looks really cool and I refuse to take it off but the performance side of me screams to provide the motor with a readily available stream of air instead of trying to force feed the motor at higher speeds. Another example I will give you is one of success! I had a very long and involved conversation with a very good

friend of mine. He is a little shorter than most and has a hard time on his tip toes when he stops his Road Glide. This makes maneuvering the bike while not under power very difficult for him. His first instinct is to lower the motorcycle by buying different shocks. I told him absolutely not! He was shocked as I am all about making the bike your own. I explained to my amigo that lowering the bike is going to reduce the rideability of the cycle. He is a very experienced rider and loves to carve mountains and curves to the max whenever possible. At the stock height he usually chews up floorboards very quickly. Lowering his bike would be a huge mistake because it would reduce his potential lean angle.

The solution was right underneath him the whole time. Changing the profile of the stock seat would lower his riding position but maintain the ride height of the motorcycle. Again, if it makes

PAGE 11 sense. This was a much better option for him. The price ended up being very similar to the proposed shock modification because of the choice to go with a custom seat, but still made the most sense for him.

Having a motorcycle I cannot ride safely and comfortably does not make sense to me. Making modifications to improve your experience is what makes the most sense. If adding a 300 series rear tire makes the experience of riding better for you then it makes sense. If adding saddle bags to your sportster removes the backpack from your back and makes the experience better for you, then it makes sense. If adding a supercharger to your Dyna makes you ride more (and who wouldn’t!), then it makes sense. Just make sure your mods fit you!

Next time you see me be sure to let me know how cool my hyper-charger looks! See you in the wind…..if it makes sense

2014 Election Rally & General Membership Meeting

This year’s State Election Rally was held at the Arizona American Italian Club (AAIC) in Phoenix. This was a new gig for us as we wanted to put a program together to include a guest speaker, BOD Elections, BOD Quarterly meeting, and Bike Games. The AAIC was contacted and the only available date was November 1. They offered the complete facility, including the large meeting room, the parking lot for games, outdoor area for Kids’ activities, Bar, along with a short menu, all for a minimal fee. The desicion was made and we jumped in.

To start the event, the BOD meeting was called to order and the Election Rally was open for business. This year’s guest speaker was Wayne Weirson from the Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s A&E. His power point pres-

entation was most informative and interesting. You would have thought we were in Church, could have heard a pin drop. The audience involvement and participation was great. Wayne speaks across the country presenting a few different motorcycle safety related programs.

Jess Method from the East Valley Chapter put on a program for the kids and kept them captivated for a while. Paul and Sandy Hassinger from Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter were selling merchandise in the meeting room. The Bike Games included the Slow Race, a little different version on the blacktop, Bike Wash, and Jousting.

This year we recognized several members who have helped shape ABATE of Arizona to where we are today with some one-off custom awards. Billy Hensler,

Eric Hampton and Jim Silk received Freedom Fighter Awards for all their YEARS of dedication. Matt Brown’s Law firm, Brown & Little, PLC, was recognized for its ongoing financial support for events. Outgoing BOD members, Jack Batty, Clyde Brooks, Billy Hensler, Sean Pinder, Deborah Butitta, Rick Breadwell. were also recognized for their contributions. Most of the outgoing BOD members were re-elected for another term. The BOD members for the next 2 year term are: Sean Pinder Southern AZ, Jack Batty EV, Clyde Brooks PHX/Shadow MNT, Rick Breadwell Yuma, Deb Butitta Yavapai and to the new guy Forrest ‘Woody’ Phillips from High Country Welcome. The Bike Game Winners were, Slow

Race-Dana Smith of HCC, Bike WashRich Ertzner of Phoenix/SM and Donna, and Jousting-44 Dan of Yavapai and Katrina. Thanks to Vic, Wayne, Dee, Lisa, Rich, Katrina, TV Bob and Navy Mike for your participation and help. And to the Winners a big thanks for competing. Also, thanks go to Jess for entertaining the future ABATE members. The 50/50 was $65 won by Dana Smith. Sean Pinder picked up a unique piece of clothing from the Silent Auction (enough said there). And let’s also give a head nod to Jean Cooper for putting this Event together. Ride Fast and Take Chances, Clydeman

MASTERLINK DECEMBER 2014 other two do what they said they would, and no one ever speaks of it again.

When we give each other the acknowledging “wave” while riding down the road, I believe that means we look out for each other as a brotherhood of bikers.

Apparently, an old Greek philosopher named Heraclitus said, “Change is the only constant in life.” He also said something about never stepping in the same river twice, but what did he know, really? That was over 2,000 years ago. What I do accept is that change is indeed a part of life, and we have to adapt or get lost in the mix.

This fact brings me to our process of recognizing each of you for your consecutive years of membership in ABATE of AZ. As you know, we have been awarding pins depicting the number of years of continuous membership. The issue is that there are several problems in getting those pins to you safely, and in a timely and cost-effective manner. Postage cost has increased, and the US

In closing, I wish all the best to you during this holiday season, and remember to help those less fortunate.

Pins to Patches

Postal Service will no longer let the envelopes containing the pins (wrapped in bubble wrap) slide through the system as a simple “non-machinable” letter. This means that our renewal cards and consecutive year pins must be shipped as a parcel. This costs about $2.40 each, plus the cost of the pin. And this still does not guarantee that the pin will arrive undamaged. To do it right, we would need to buy a stronger package - which adds to the costs even more.

The best solution (like the MMA has already done) is to switch to patches. Patches lie flat in the envelope, are unlikely to be lost or damaged, and are light enough to be sent for the cost of a regular 49 cent stamp. The color scheme of the patches will

match the colors of our ABATE of AZ patch. The patch (like the pin) will depict the number of years of continuous, consecutive years as a member of ABATE of AZ. The size of the patch (about 2 1/2 inches long) will line up nicely with the flat bottom part of our ABATE patch. What do we do with the pins that we have left? I’m going to put together a package consisting of a couple sample pins from each year (2 to 25 yrs) and give them to the chapters. I will also give each Chapter Coordinator/Membership Officer a copy of the order form that the State has been using to re-order pins. This way, if the chapters decided to continue (on their own) to run and fund a pin award program they may do so.

However, due to cost effectiveness and the need for a smooth, reliable way to recognize years of membership, ABATE of AZ (at the State Level) is out of the Pin Business, and proudly in the patch business. I ask for your support during this transition, and I thank you all for your words of encouragement. I will try to serve the best I can.

From: Jeff Hennie, Motorcycle Riders Foundation Vice President Government Relations and Public Affairs

Now that the dust has settled on the 2014 election ,the Motorcycle Riders Foundation issues its reflections on what just happened. As you probably already know, it was a good night for Republican candidates with the pick up of some unlikely Gubernatorial, Senate and House seats. The election ultimately gave the Republicans a Senate majority and the largest Republican House majority since 1929.

Some say that the Republicans received a mandate from the country on their conservative platform: that is a little far fetched, considering the President's dismal approval ratings and the tradition of a second term president's party receiving a walloping at the polls in the midterm elections. President Obama has also inserted himself and his policies into the fabric of peoples daily lives, and that has not had the desired effect-just the opposite actually.

The Republicans managed to capture seven additional Senate seats and possibly more, as Virginia is still too close to call. The Louisiana Senate race, according to state election law, must go to a run off in the coming weeks with polls identifying the Republican candidate with a healthy lead over the incumbent. The Republicans will have a slight majority with less than the 60 votes needed for full control. Mitch McConnell is apparently the heir to the Majority Leader position after handily defending his seat against a worthy adversary.

The Republicans also held onto and even expanded their robust control of the U.S. House of Representatives. They padded their majority, elected the first black Republican woman, and are set to re-elect speaker Boehner. Speaking of women, this Congress is now the first to elect 100 women to the House and Senate.

Longtime motorcycle champion and House transportation committee member Nick “Nicky Joe” Rahall (D-WV) lost his bid for a 20th term in the House. We are sad to see him go, and his loyalty to the motorcycling community will be missed. Republicans also won some very unforeseen Governors races, most notably in Massachusetts and Maryland: both were stunning upsets in solid blue states. Whether the Republicans had a great midterm because of there policies, President Obama's unpopularity, or if the Democrats just had bad candidates is up to you to decide.

Now Congress must come back to work and finish the “must pass” spending bill,s as well as any last minute business that the “lame duck” session will accommo-

date. After that, anything is possible. The next Congress will see lots of veto threats from the White House and lots of complaining from the Republicans. We will also see how the Republicans run the Senate with razor thin majority. Expect lots of partisan theatre, showdowns, and maybe even another government shut down. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation will keep you informed on this issue, and every other matter affecting motorcyclists in Washington, D.C. ============================= 2015 MRF Legislative Strategy Agenda FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 10 November 2014

Contact: Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, MRF President, kirk@mrf.org The Motorcycle Riders Foundation Releases its Legislative Strategy Agenda for 2015

At the 2014 Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s (MRF) 30th Anniversary Meeting of the Minds Conference held in September in Kansas City, Missouri, a Legislative Strategy Session was hosted by the MRF’s Legislative Committee. As has been done for the past several years, the MRF requested that it be attended by Sustaining State Motorcyclists’ Rights Organizations (SSMRO) Legislative and/or Executive Officers. We welcomed several representatives from our Sustaining Motorcycle Clubs and Organizations as well. The goal was to set the MRF’s Federal Legislative Agenda for the 2014 Meeting of the Minds to the 2015 Meeting of the Minds annual cycle.

The MRF’s SSMRO partners responded once again with a majority attendance that resulted in a healthy dialogue focused on motorcycling. The MRF Legislative Committee remains extremely pleased at the aligned and clear direction we experienced again this year from our SSMRO partners. This level of agreement continues to allow for solid action plans to be developed by our Legislative Committee and our Board of Directors that can be effectively employed by our Government Relations Department and our SSMRO partners while in Washington D.C. and in working federal issues in their home states. Additionally, we continue to see productive gains in state legislative activities that support our federal efforts when it comes to protecting on-road motorcyclists, motorcycling, and its associated lifestyle. The MRF Legislative Committee continued the practice instituted four years ago of recording one vote per SSMRO in attendance. A full breakdown of each vote can be seen in the upcoming issue of the MRF Reports. The session this year was moderated by MRF Vice President, Jay Jackson, with support from MRF Vice President of Government Relations & Public Affairs, Jeff Hennie, and MRF President, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard.

Continue participation at the federal level where the definition of a motorcycle is under review taking advantage of any opportunity available to enhance and further clarify MRF will oppose any motorcycling, motorcycle, or motorcyclist-based discriminatory legislation or rules proposed by the U.S. Congress or by a federal agency MRF to seek a legislative vehicle to include motorcyclist anti-profiling language this upcoming session

Continue participation in motorcycle related activity in the European Union, United Nations and Canada

MRF to continue to insure the inclusion of motorcycles in ongoing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) emerging technologies Pursue safer roadway design strategies at the federal level, include safer cable barrier research similar to European improvements in the discussion

MRF to pursue limiting of funding of CDC on their involvement in motorcycling safety issues through a relevant appropriations bill, pursue CDC lobby ban and seek to remove language where CDC suggests motorcycle crashes are preventable injury events. MRF to continue to support efforts to refocus the CDC on their mission as stated in the letter from Congressman Petri to the CDC on September 27th, 2013

MRF to monitor private organizations that oppose the legislative agenda or mission of the MRF and investigate their funding sources to make certain they are not receiving federal tax dollars

our legislative agenda or mission and respond appropriately if they receive federal tax dollars

MRF to monitor and report on transportation entities that are active in motorcycling but by their charters or mission statements are or should be non-relevant to motorcycles

MRF to monitor and report on non-transportation federal agencies becoming increasingly involved in motorcycling such as the Government Accountability Office (GAO) MRF to continue to closely monitor the federally mandated Affordable Health Care Act for potential motorcyclist and motorcycling discrimination

MRF to fully engage the EPA on upcoming activity on motorcycle emission regulations and motorcycle drive train mandates

MRF to support the Black Box Protection Act, currently HR2414, seek introduction of similar language in the upcoming Congress to regulate black boxes in motorcycles, seek to clarify the rights of

the vehicle owner to ownership of the recorded data

MRF to research fair tolling concepts on federally funded roads and roads supported by federal bonds

Federal Agency Motorcycle Design Standards – MRF to oppose non-motorcycle manufacturer mandated specific design standards

There was agreement that while the handling of non-motorcycle powered two and three wheelers such and mopeds, scooters, and the various cabin based steering wheel type vehicles was considered a state by state issue that there would be an effort to get these removed from motorcycle crash statistics if they do not have to follow the existing motorcycle licensing program in the state. With the current U.S. Congress, combined with our comprehensive and aggressive legislative agenda, the MRF Legislative Committee strongly encourages our SSMRO partners and our MRF members to actively engage in a lively motorcycling dialogue with their U.S. House of Representative and U.S. Senate

PAGE 15 Members as an immediate priority. We will need a strong presence going into the new 114th Congress as well. If your SSMRO needs any assistance in planning a trip to Washington D.C. to begin or strengthen the dialogue with your members of Congress, contact Jeff Hennie in the MRF office at 202-546-0983 or Jeff@mrf.org. MASTERLINK DECEMBER 2014 From Jeff Hennie Motorcycle Rider Foundation, Vice President Government Relations and Public Affairs

Congress came back this week for the start of the lame duck session. During the day and half that they went to work this week, they went through the usual elections of leadership and jockeying for committee chairs. I would list the shakeups in leadership for both parties, but there were none. As the great rock band The Who put it: “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”

This was a historic election, but I feel like we have been saying that about every election in the past 15 years. Margins are slim and when you have razor thin majorities, they tend to Ping-Pong between parties. We all have high hopes for the new Senate, but don't get too excited.

Harry Reid ran the Senate like a fiefdom. He would only bring bills to the floor that he: A. knew would pass; and B. that

News from the MRF (continued)

would bolster President Obama’s agenda. So just about every vote in the U.S. Senate in the past six years were extremely left-leaning and in lock-step with President Obama. This strategy is ironic in that it put every member of the Democrat party in the Senate shoulder to shoulder with President Obama. And in a year that the president’s approval rating has tanked, that’s not a good place to be. So in essence Reid thought he was protecting the president, but at the end he just forced his fellow Democratic Senators to vote much more liberally than they might have liked to by providing zero political cover. This ultimately forced Democratic Senators into tight races to try to distance themselves from President Obama and it just did not work. Okay, all that to say that the Republican Senate will have much more votes and should be much more productive, right?

Wrong. The Senate, along with the House, will churn out more legislation, but it will go to legislative purgatory. President Obama will heave a heavy veto hammer on everything that even remotely resembles a threat to Obama Care, which is going to be a lot of things.

them.

So what’s in store for the lame duck? Well, for starters 60, out of 535 elected officials are not coming back for some reason or another. I expect the session to be fast-paced with lawmakers wanting to put this session behind

What will pass: government funding (they have to pay themselves, people!). Seriously, these are the must-pass spending bills to keep the federal government governing. I also expect to see some sort of an Ebola funding bill to make an appearance, as well as our good old friends, the tax extender bills.

Some are saying there may be a war declaration on ISIS. Also possible but not likely is the Keystone pipeline authorization. I personally think this is a waste of time right now, because this has becomes President Obama’s real “line in the sand,” not like the line in the sand he drew in front of Syria, but a real line. He will not budge on this. Republicans are going to have to tie this issue to a huge sweetener for President Obama to even look in their general direction. For some reason this is President Obama’s “Holy Grail”, something to never be given up. What could possibly be his asking price? Immigration reform, his way, which means total amnesty. This is sure to make Republicans bristle. This is shaping up to be a business as usual lame duck. Sort of like packing up the fish camp at the end of a season. Sweep up, close the windows, turn out the lights, and see you next year.
