NCOM Region II -Conference– Desoto, Texas
I truly have to say that this was one of the best NCOM Regional Conferences that I’ve ever been too. They really do know how to do it better in Texas!!! There were anywhere from 300-400 in attendance, which is unheard of when it comes to a regional. Guess ‘mandatory’ does work in some cases. abateofaz.org

Soldiers For Jesus MC for hosting the hospitality room. It couldn’t have been better.
Region II is made up of 6 states, Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Thanks to the hosts, there was a band on Friday night as riders came in, as well as a ‘Freedom Fighters Social’ Saturday night to rap it all up. A big thanks also, to the
The day started with introductions, a brief overview of Confederation of Clubs by Sarge, Executive Coordinator NCOM/AIM, followed by ‘Freedom of the Road Throughout the Nation’ by Doc Reichenbach, NCOM Chairman and President of ABATE of FL. Doc mentioned that there was currently no BILL in Congress or Committee regarding a National Helmet Law, and that New York had an AIM Attorney filing a lawsuit in regards to the motorcycle checkpoints. He stated that there were no states currently running bills to repeal helmet laws and that we needed to get the clubs to make a bigger presence at the Capitol. He said, “We need to take our country back and how about doing that at the ballot box.” Motorcycle accidents are up in Florida due to Population Growth, Tourism and Climate. He talked about the “NCOM Flyer Program” and how your organization can save up to $250 when printing your flyers, just by putting the NCOM/AIM advertising box on the bottom of your flyers and have Richard Lester pay for their printing. Contact Sarge for the details. Later on in the day, Doc pre-
sented Gimmi Jimmy, Liaison for COC Texas, Bandidos M/C, with a new and much deserved award, called the Chairman’s Award. South Dakota’s State Senator Jim Putnam, and newly appointed Chairman of the NCOM Legislative Task Force (LTF), gave everyone tips on getting our people elected to public office. A few of his Tips for going into politics were: * Know the Rules and Requirements of running for office. * You should have more than one issue and talk about those as well as ‘freedom’ issues. * Get involved early. Start with your precincts. * Be yourself, if you can bray without lying! * Be prepared to ‘repeal’ as well as ‘pass’ legislation * Never talk out of both sides of your mouth. Give same message to everyone.

State Meeting Minutes December 5, 2010 Officers in attendance: Joe Ferrucci, Joel Jackson, Connie Johnson, Ron Kool and Margie Ferrucci. Guests: Tim O’Reilly, Leo Balthazor, Phil Hubacek, Jim Page, Joel Rosen, Rick Henry, Eric Hampton, and Jimmy Clark. Call to order: Pledge of Allegiance and moment of silence led by Joe Ferrucci Reports:
Vice President’s Column * Work with Consumer Product Safety Commission to overturn bike ban * Participate in European Union and United Nations Activity
So this is my last report :(, I hope Ross and family had a great vacation, but it's time to get back to work lol. I hope the holidays were good for everyone and this will be the beginning of a brand new year. Welcome again to all the new officers and thank you again to all the out going officers. We lost quit a few friends last year and I hope this year will be different. I think I want to remind everyone what the M.R.F does for us. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), incorporated in 1987, is a membership-based national motorcyclists’ rights organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. The MRF monitors and when necessary, sways federal legislation and regulatory action that pertains to street riders. The MRF concerns itself with what is going on in the arena of motorcycling safety education, training, licensing, and public awareness. The MRF provides members and state motorcyclists’ rights organizations with direction and information to protect motorcyclists’ rights and motorcycling. The MRF sponsors annual regional and national educational seminars for motorcyclists’ rights activists and publishes a bi-monthly newsletter, The MRF Reports. Basically what this means is that if they can stop laws federally than we won't have to deal with them on a state level. Below is a list of the 2011 agenda. * Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) * Stop NHTSA checkpoint grant program * Increase 2010 motorcycle grant funding * Maintain Motorcycle Advisory Council (MAC) * Continue NHTSA to States lobby ban * Monitor Federal crash causation study * Monitor MSF alternate naturalistic study * Promote US House Resolution 1498 * Monitor all motorcycle specific efforts by EPA, sound and emissions * Advocate for good distracted driving laws * Promote and pass Right to Repair * Work with the USDOT to update Federal of definition of a motorcycle * Stop motorcycle and motorcyclists discriminatory legislation.
There are 2 very important issues that scare me, The Motorcycle Riders Foundation has learned from a source at the US Department of Transportation that they have funded the motorcycle only roadside checkpoints. NHTSA also continued to defend their discriminatory practice of funding motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints, including their recent $40,000 award to Georgia's Department of Public Safety. The idea is based on no science or research, but simply the notion that pulling every motorcycle off the road at the discretion of law enforcement will "save lives." Also , The MRF reports that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling on all States that do not have a mandatory helmet law to adopt one. The NTSB has a "top ten most wanted" list that has never before addressed motorcycle helmet law, but does now. They are asking for every State to enact mandatory helmet law for every rider and passenger on every motorcycle. so what I am getting at is we need to support the MRF, they work for us and can't do it without our help. I for one do not want to be told what I have to do to be able to ride, and I believe everyone feels the same. So let's not forget the people in Washington watching out for us. You can learn more about the MRF by visiting their website @ www.MRF.org. Ok have a great we have a great year ahead of us, so ride safe, watch out for the other guy so we will all be around to enjoy it. -Margie F ABATE of AZ State Vice President State Run/Events Coordinator Motorcycle Riders Foundation Ad Manager to Communications

Secretary minutes from November- Joe Ferrucci made a motion to waive reading of the November meeting minutes. Joel Jackson 2nd. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report- given by Joel Jackson Membership- Ron Kool announced # of members, business members and nonrenewals. Safety Officer- Vacant P.A.C. Officer- Vacant Lobbyist report written by Bobbi Hartmann as follows: - HIPPA - Seeing as how the Federal Bill to close the HIPPA loophole on 'Source of Injury' insurance claims has not passed the Congress in more than 10 years, the MRF has asked that the states do what they can, to pass this legislation at the State level. After obtaining a copy of the Federal Bills language and what Colorado passed a few years back, the lobby team met with Senator John Nelson and his staff last week, in regards to obtaining his support and possible sponsorship of the HIPPA Bill. The staff, who now understands the Bill language needed, will be doing more research, counseling with Legislative Council and will be getting back to us shortly with a 'draft folder'. Senator Nelson, whose record of successful Bills speaks for itself, has worked with us and supported our efforts for many years. More on this as we obtain additional details and get closer to finalizing the language. - Distracted Driving/Texting - As I reported in November, we have decided not to do a straight 'Ban Texting Bill', and are seriously looking at Maine’s Distracted Driving language instead. The decision was made by the entire lobby team, due to the problems we heard that other states were having with 'texting bans', while at the MRF Meeting of the Minds Conference in September. In talking with Jeff Hennie, MRF's Federal Lobbyist, we found that he highly suggested a more inclusive Bill, similar to Maine's Distracted Driving statute. After obtaining their language and working with their lobbyist to understand all of Maine's related statutes, we've put together the proposed language for a Bill to do the same. We've been talking to some of our legislators on this 'Potential' Bill and will be having a meeting with Representative Farley on December 17th. As you can imagine, there is much more to do, prior to making final decisions on this type of legislation. We will need to get more background information and facts, and then review that with Rep Farley and others, before moving forward. - Emissions - The lobbyist have another meeting scheduled with ADEQ on
December 15th. As I reported some time ago, the EPA and ADEQ were finalizing additional information requested and are moving forward as planned. As I've continually reported, the ADEQ and MAG have been working closely with the lobby team, from the beginning. All of us are still looking at this coming to a close by the first quarter of 2011. - Lane Splitting - As I reported throughout the year in 2010, there were some major issues with this legislation. Although it passed through the House and Senate, the Governor vetoed it. The number one reason she did, was that neither ADOT nor DPS supported or were in favor of this Bill. One of the biggest arguments was there wasn't enough support for this type of legislation and no support for what it would take to run a test for a year in Maricopa County only. We also found, after the fact that many of our organizations members were not in support of it either, and said that they were glad it didn't pass. This does not mean that we wouldn't look at this issue again, if these factors were to change. - Motorcycle Safety Fund Sweep - As Ross reported at the November meeting, according to the lawyer he reviewed this with; it is not possible to get this money back. The council is doing the best they can to get the monies in the fund committed to the individual projects chosen to be financed by the fund. Senator Nelson spoke of how the fund of one of his much needed programs was swept last year as well, and that this year isn't looking much better. It was easy to see that he too was devastated by the cuts that were made and the jobs lost, due to the budget crisis in this state. Run/Event Coordinator- Margie Ferrucci announced Joel Rosen is the chairperson for the “TBFS” committee. Merchandising Officer- Ron Kool has done some research on promotional items. Bumper stickers from Vista Point are $200 and key fobs were researched. Recommend bids to the January BOD officers. Joel Jackson made a motion to give away dated t-shirts to the officers training on January 8th. Joe Ferrucci 2nd. Motion carried. OLD BUSINESS 2011-2012 A.B.A.T.E. News from the MRF 10NR34 - MRF News Release - NHTSA Meeting FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 10 December 2010 Contact: Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs NHTSA MEETING The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) recently participated in a regularly-scheduled meeting with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The government safety group continues to deny that the recent drop in motorcycle fatalities could have anything to do with education and awareness, instead maintaining that that the decrease was a result of people riding less. However, the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) reported that during the
same time period, 2008-2009, vehicle miles traveled for motorcycles were up 6.8% or 27.6 billion miles in the U.S. The MIC also reported that tire sales, a unique measure of motorcycle use, were also up 9.6% in 2008-2009. NHTSA also continued to defend their discriminatory practice of funding motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints, including their recent $40,000 award to Georgia's Department of Public Safety. The idea is based on no science or research, but simply the notion that pulling every motorcycle off the road at the discretion of law enforcement will "save lives." NEW SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE It is safe to presume that Representative John Boehner (R-OH) will become the next Speaker of the House once the vote
is taken by the 111th Congress when they are sworn in this January. With Republicans taking control of the House, it is likely that Boehner will garner the majority of the votes. The MRF recently met with Mr. Boehner's staff to congratulate him. Representative Boehner has been a long-time friend of the MRF and ABATE of Ohio, and we look forward to continuing working with him in his new role. NEW HOUSE TRANSPORTATION CHAIRMAN The new chair of the powerful U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) will be John Mica (R-FL). Representative Mica has been a constant supporter of the MRF and all of our initiatives, as well as a very staunch advocate for ABATE of Florida. When it comes to anything motorcycle, Mica has
an open door policy for the MRF, and the MRF meets regularly with Mr. Mica and his staff. Mica is tasked with the awesome responsibility of writing the next surface transportation bill. This mammoth piece of legislation has been the vehicle for such things as the national helmet law repeal, NHTSA lobby ban, motorcycle education and awareness grants, and the motorcycle advisory committee. The MRF will be working hand-in-hand with Mica and his team over the coming months as the bill is drafted, to make sure that motorcyclists continue to benefit from it. The MRF wishes you, your families, and your friends a Merry Christmas and a healthy, "many miles on your ride" and Happy New Year.
Motorcycle Day at the Dome (MDATD) The purpose of the Motorcycle Day at the Dome (MDATD) is to meet, greet and converse with your District Legislators and discuss various issues facing Motorcyclists today. Representatives from various Motorcycle organizations and Legislators will attend the Annual Motorcycle Day at the Dome. This event is sponsored by MMA and ABATE of Arizona and the Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC). The date is Wednesday, February 23rd from 11:30am-1pm on the Capitol grounds, Senate lawn. All volunteer organizations/workers and clubs should be on sight by 9:30am. Please mark your calendars. "All Bikers Welcome". A barricaded area is reserved for bike parking on 17th Ave between Washington and Jefferson, the full length of the Capitol grounds itself. Any delivery vehicles will have to enter the area from the Washington side. We have notified TV stations for media coverage.
Your lobbyists cannot do this alone and we are asking for your help to make this another great year with our Legislation. We are asking that each of you invite as many of your motorcyclist friends as you can to participate in this important event. PLEASE CALL or EMAIL your 2 Representatives and 1 Senator yourself, and give them a personal invitation to join you for lunch. Set up an appointment with them to meet in their office before or after lunch if you have the time. If you're not sure who your Legislative person is you can obtain their name and contact information by going to the following website: GOTO www.votesmart.org ENTER your ZIPCODE on the left SCROLL DOWN - to "State Legislative" CLICK on Their Name for an info page along with their picture and email address CLICK on "Complete Contact Information" under their picture, for
more info and phone GO BACK two pages and do the same for the other two We will have a sheet with the Legislative bills that we are running for this year at this time on site and at the Sign-In Table. For further information on the event, go
to the http://www.mma-az.org/ or http://www.abateofaz.org/. The Motorcycle Day at the Dome Committee (MDATD) Sponsored by MMA, ABATE and ACMC.
Emissions in Maricopa County Members of the lobby team attended a Public Hearing at the AZ Dept of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) yesterday. This was another necessary formality in the steps to eliminate motorcycle emissions from Maricopa County. As we've been reporting, the ADEQ writes a State Implementation Plan (SIP) which shows that elimination and how Arizona's air will not be effected by it, and then the long wait of the EPA allowing it to happen.
We are still hoping that this will all come to an end, and all Arizona motorcyclists will be free of yearly emissions by early 2011.
Pima County (AREA B) - Tucson area was eliminated approximately 2 years ago, without much of a hitch. However,
Bobbi Hartmann ABATE Designated Lobbyist bobbij2@earthlink.net
when the SIP was submitted for Maricopa County (AREA A) this last October, the EPA required additional information in order to move forward with that request. ADEQ has sent them everything they asked for and held the fiinal Public Hearing as required.

Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter It’s the time of year when we roll out the old and bring in the new! With that being said, a great big THANK YOU! To last years officers and a big HELLO to our 2011 officers. There will be an Officers Training- January 8th, 2011, Saturday from 12:00 noon-4 p.m. at the AIAC. We did close the 2010 year with “finally” deciding by show of hands the design to be used on the chapter tshirts. GraphicsGraphics brought us 3 designs; Design #1 was the hands down winner. Thank You GraphicsGraphics for your awesome designs. Bids will be requested by next year’s chapter coordinator, Jim Page. Is it to early to be planning for “Too Broke”? Hello?? NO!! 2011 business cards for “TBFS” were handed out at our meeting. Please take and get the info out there. This is OUR 20th Anniversary for “Too Broke For Sturgis. Let’s make this one the biggest and best yet! Mark your calendars July 22-24, 2011, this is a weekend you don’t want to miss. Thank you members for opening up your hearts and your wallets, A helmet was passed to collect funds to help Bill Hensler with expenses for his late wife Barb. An account has been set up at Wells Fargo, if you would like to add to the funds, go to any Wells Fargo and ask for “Bill Hensler Fund”. This months PAC report presented by Tim O’Reilly was very informative as there are so many changes in the 2011 year. This is just one of the hot topics; The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) recently participated in a regularly-scheduled meeting with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The government safety group continues to deny
that the recent drop in motorcycle fatalities could have anything to do with education and awareness, instead maintaining that that the decrease was a result of people riding less. for the cause and has already had a garage sale that netted over a thousand bucks. There will also be a fund raiser at Big Sky Motorcycles with a pool tournament and other fun games on January 22nd. TGI Fridays will be helping with the chow. Put it on your calendar and let’s make sure Southern Arizona Chapter of ABATE makes a good showing.
The 2010 year The New Year’s Eve Party will be held at Mike Kilmer’s house. Theme is hillbilly, come dressed as a hillbilly and listen to the band. Party starts at 7:00 p.m. Check out our Facebook “Phoenix-Shadow Mountain ABATE of Arizona” for more details.

Southern Arizona Chapter Wow, we had 20 folks show up for our last meeting of the year. Nice work guys and gals. Ron moved the meeting right along and we covered a bunch of topics in the 45-minutes we talked story. (Hawaiian talk!) Dawn told us about the Chapter transfer and the issues involved. It seems like we’re going to have just a couple colors to choose from as some colors in the transfer will not go with a particular color, i.e. black on black. It sounds complicated but Dawn will figure it out and let us know early next year what options we have. We did hold elections and I could list the names but they are exactly the same as last year, and the year before, and the year before, etc. Come on folks, we need some new blood running the show. Sean had a good report on the PAC and indicated the motorcycle only checkpoints are an ongoing issue. Discrimination is another problem that isn’t going away and our lobbyists are working on that. There is also legislation afoot about “distracted drivers.” That’s the current buzzword for talking and texting while driving. I don’t think the legislators are going to stop the talking part but hopefully the texting will be unlawful. That’s good for those on two wheels – I’ve never seen a biker texting while riding down I-10! Bob Welton is heavy into Bikers for Babies. He has formed Bob’s Posse and it’s a March of Dimes effort to help premature babies. He is soliciting money
The HOG Pit won the dollar jar but the business member wasn’t there so it rolls over as usual. Ron won $19 in the 50/50 and donated it back to the Chapter. Thanks Mr. Coordinator. After the short meeting we celebrated Dawn’s 50th (good Lord how can she be that old?) with a birthday cake done appropriately with a biker theme. Happy birthday young lady.
We don’t have a meeting in December and our next one will be January 23rd at the Kettle Restaurant. By the way, we no longer have the buffet and we all order off the menu. That works better for a lot of folks. The officers of the Chapter want to wish each and every one of our members a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you folks next year and remember to: Ride Hard Rich Montgomery
Yavapai Chapter We just had our last General Meeting for 2010. If you read last month’s report you already know the chapter survived and voted in all knew officers with the exception of our Treasurer, Rich Kocar, who stepped up to take Coordinator position, the key to saving Yavapai Chapter. I learned today that a couple of names were not spelled correctly in writing the chapter report last month. I will list them again to correct this mistake. The following are the new officers for 2011; Rich Kocar - Coordinator David “Doc” Pratt - Vice Coordinator Paul “Sonar” Pendergrast - Treasurer Mark “2 Toke” Stabolito – Secretary “Longhair James” Venegas – Runs/Events Mike “Dawolf” Ruddell – Communications Bonnie “BJ” Reithmayer – Safety Lynda Marie “Handi” Barnett – PAC JD Fillingim – Sgt. at Arms Welcome to all these new officers and thank you all for stepping up to the plate to hold the chapter together. A very special thank you goes to our outgoing officers for their service representing Yavapai Chapter. We still need a Membership Officer so if anyone would consider this position please come to the next meeting and we’ll explain what it entails. While I’m mentioning the next meeting we now have a new place to hold our monthly meetings, at least for the first half of 2011; January 9, 2011 at The Taj Mahal Restaurant, 124 N. Montezuma St. in Prescott @11:00am. Linda “Gabby” Kocar Soon to be ex Yavapai Chapter Secretary ABATE of Arizona

Lobbyist Report (continued) I believe it was Animal, Alabama COC, that said that it was all about Participation and Commitment. He said it was much like a Ham and Egg Omelet. The Chicken represented a ‘Show of Participation – BUT – the Pig’s contribution was definitely considered ‘Commitment’ After lunch, Gimmi Jimmy spoke about the creation of ‘Fusion Centers’, which are a means of bringing together information from distributed sources for the purpose of collection, retention, analysis, and dissemination. These new fusion centers, over 40 of which have been established around the country, raise very serious privacy issues at a time when new technology, government powers and zeal in the "war on terrorism" are combining to threaten Americans' privacy at an unprecedented level. He also spoke of InfraGard, whos goal is to promote ongoing dialogue and timely communication between members and the FBI. InfraGard members gain access to information that enables them to protect their assets and in turn give information to government that facilitates its responsibilities to prevent and address terrorism and other crimes. This could go so far as
to collecting data off of credit cards during transactions made while shopping etc. Goggle both of these topics. Scary business. Jimmy followed this conversation, with one of his infamous presentations of the Defender Program, something I never get tired of hearing time and time again. He said it’s time to quite going nowhere!! In 2007 they ‘took Texas back’. He spoke of how, after speaking to other 1% clubs, that he changed the U.S. Defenders patch from their Bandidos Club colors, to making it Red/White/and Blue, and that they currently have 35 states who are solid in the Defender Program. He described how the COC’s are like a mechanics shop without tools, and how the Independents are important tools in the process. They are now doing it ‘legal’ and getting the legislators attention by flooding them with phone calls and emails. He talked about how the ABATE’s are knowledgeable in this arena and know what they’re fighting for. BUT, without “boots on the ground” and an army behind them, they can’t get as far as they could with them. He stated that he’s going to fight no matter what it takes and that we need to help him! He re-iterated
that in Texas, they are Large and in Charge and Loud and Proud. He went on to say that it’s no longer about fighting over turf and areas or that one club is better than the other. He asked, “Where were you in the 60’s? The fight was then. You all know where it all is by now and who’s in charge of it. There’s only one thing going now, and that’s RESPECT!!! The Defenders is a must join. Quit bitching about Richard’s office. Get out there and do it. He finished by saying that what he saw that morning, when Doc had everyone under 30 years old stand up and saw how few there were, scared the s--t out of him. He said we need to be Respectful in ALL aspects of our lives and that they have a thing in Texas – “Do the right thing, or don’t be around when it gets dark”!! Texas State Representative Chavez, may have lost her political race, but was in attendance to receive her ‘US Defenders Patch’. She honored the memory of Sputnik, one of the greatest Texas Freedom Fighters known, and assured the clubs that she will be working with and standing along side of them, throughout the 2011 legislative session.
Later in the afternoon, representatives from the National Sport Bike Association (NSBA) held a seminar for all to attend. Lady Ninja started off by talking about bridging the gap which formed when older riders started looking down on the younger ones. She educated us on what they as an National association promote amongst other sport bike riders. A few of them being – Pick and choose when to do some of the things you do – Being part of an association gives you the opportunity to be heard – They have to start speaking for themselves and help those that are out there fighting the fight for them – Need to get attitude – Don’t matter what you feel about someone next to you, what unites us is 2 wheels – Stop the crap, wheelies only pour gas on an existing fire – Encourage responsible riding – Write charity press releases to be recognized for positive in the public eye – Pull someone over and “Correct” bad behavior when you see it. She also spoke of how the NSBA riders can be part of any of those Confederations like Texas, that allow independents, or the Defenders COIR. The Regional Meeting, with moderators

ABATE promotes rider education for all motorcycle riders and motorcycle awareness for all automobile drivers. ABATE needs the support of all motorcyclists.

Too Broke for Sturgis Update Hi everyone, it seems like Too Broke For Sturgis is right around the corner. This year we plan on keeping you informed as we get closer and closer. This year is our 20th anniversary and it hopes to be the best ever. We will keep you informed on what’s happening with our planning as we move forward. The first update I have for you is, if you have been camping across the street from the main gate in the past years, this year you will not be able to. The Forestry Department has installed permanent signs informing the public that there is NO camping there any longer. I believe it has always been that way but never enforced. They say that the property over there is suffering from all the campers, not just us but everyone. So they have put up signs to inform everyone that there is no camping there. From what I’ve been told if you camp over there they will probably come by and give you a warning, if you do not move they will ticket you. But no fears we still have plenty of room within
the main event site. I know change is hard sometimes, but ABATE has no control over this change. On another note, we will be setting up an R.V. inside the gate at the beginning of the R.V. section where there will be an emergency contact person. The R.V. will be clearly marked with signage stating “Security”. If there are any problems throughout the night or after hours please come to that R.V. and let us know. So when that karaoke guy starts singing in the middle of the night just come get us and we will quickly solve the problem. Well that’s all I have this time, but keep watching for more information as we get closer to the event. I hope to see you all there again this year and hopefully you will bring all your friends. Till next time, ride safe. Margie F State Run/Events Coordinator 602.AbateAZ (222.8329)

Tiger Mike of ABATE/COC of Oklahoma, Louie Nobs NCOM BOD and Paul Landers Chairman of TMRA2, Escondidos MC, allowed the states in Region II, an opportunity to talk about what was going on in their states. Tiger Mike talked about how Oklahoma riders can now proceed with caution when they come upon a malfunctioning traffic light due to not recognizing their motorcycle. They have written clarification of their Right Of Way statutes and have 3 riders now appointed to the motorcycle safety council, and are also working on the fact that patches were not allowed at the OK State Fair.
and all states present, to the table to talk about what was going on in their states. Sarge, Executive Director AIM/NCOM, along with others, insisted that I join them to provide a legislative update for Arizona as well. Following are a few of the issues covered in this session. - OK – COC in existence for 14 years – 60 clubs – working on Anti Gang Bill and Criminal Street Gang issues. - NW-Texas – Share the Road Program is good – Told everyone the importance of joining your local ABATE’s. - SE-Texas – Were able to get Motorcycle Awareness Proclamations from 18 counties and 17 cities plus signs mounted.
Texas - Escondido Paul spoke of how they are busy expanding their US Defenders program to other states and how there is a HUGE hole at the Capitol with their good friend Sputnik in the lead. Sputnik had asked that Paul take over the TMRA2, and so he has had to evaluate how the TMRA2 can move forward, but more importantly to continue by utilizing those people that were doing it in the past. ABATE of Texas is growing and they’ve brought them into the fold, by opening up there Texas COC meetings to them. He spoke of how they need to put ‘Territorial issues aside and utilize the people and processes already in place.
- Austin – Have gone from 30 to 72 clubs. Talked of how they reach out to sport bike riders and the importance of that. - Arizona – Have gone from 17 clubs in the beginning to over 50 clubs including associate members. Fortunate to have a lobby team made up of ABATE, MMA and Arizona Confederation lobbyists. Passed a very comprehensive Right of Way legislation in 2010 and introducing bills to address the HIPPA Loophole and possibly Distracted Driving in 2011. Spoke of Motorcycle Awareness Program presentations done by MRO’s and clubs alike and that the ACMC was holding a run to the Pima County Fair in April to address the ‘No Colors’ policy at that event.
The Christian Unity Seminar and Meeting was as informational as ever. They talked about serving their communities and that they would have to set aside denomination, in order to serve the communities as one. Texas Bandido Lee spoke of the many things they do in regards to hospital and funeral work, and providing condolences and weddings. He said not everyone wants to marry a biker of course, but then not all bikers want to get married. They divided up their regions and layout who and what they do. They even have a hotline for bikers to call, and last month managed to beat the ambulance to the scene. He summed it up by saying that some clubs may have been ignoring the Christian Clubs, but now realize that they’re not going away. He thought of this as an opportunity for the Christian clubs to fulfill their missions. He ended by saying, “The Clubs have needs your missions can fill.
- San Antonio – They now have almost as many independents signed up, as they do clubs. - Houston – Stated that they were ‘Huge and in charge’ and that they needed more independents to sign up. The information passed along at this regional was phenomenal to say the least. And, like I told Jimmy and Escondido Paul, I have a whole new appreciation for the ‘commitment’ and ‘cohesiveness’ in TEXAS!!!! Bobbi Hartmann ABATE Designated Lobbyist

Guest PAC Report out the window on this one !!! This is why all the MRO’s and bikers in Arizona want a Distracted Driving Bill written and passed in the near future. Everyone who agrees that texting while driving is a bad idea, please contact your Arizona State Senator and House Representatives Everyone has 2 Rep’s, and ask them to get behind a Distracted Driving Bill. This article is exactly as it appeared in MMA’s paper.
Hello to all my Brothers and Sisters; It has been a while since I spoke to everyone in the State PAC Report. Due to the untimely passing of Tom Bateman, State PAC Officer, I was contacted and asked if I would write this months’ PAC report. First I want to express my deepest condolences to Tom’s family, his club, The Red Iron Brotherhood, and to all his friends. We, (ABATE of Az.) lost a very good friend and freedom fighter. I am going to “borrow” an article that MMA Westside District found and put out a week or so ago. The article I feel deals with how little non riders know about what we, Motorcycle Rights Organizations, are trying to convey to the general public. If you operate a motor vehicle I guess common sense is totally

This is the one of the most irresponsible things I have ever heard done. Statistics show that texting while driving is as bad, if not worse than drunk driving. What are you folks thinking ???? I am copying the Governor and Representative Jerry Weiers to hopefully bring attention to this completely irresponsible act.
I urge you to please remove this form of communication to KTAR as soon as possible, before it's too late and someone is seriously injured or killed due to a driver texting a traffic alert to KTAR. The Passing of Dear Friends Tom “Coyote” Bateman
Barbie Hensler
I feel that I need to take some space and put my thoughts and feelings down for the chapter. We are all very sad that we have lost our Brother "Coyote" Tom Bateman. FELLOW BROTHERS AND SISTERS, Tom was a light to our chapter and the state. At times a rowdy light but always ready for fun and excitement. One thing about Tom was his extreme passion for motorcycle rights. He was devoted and hard working in the fight. He also was an inspiration and help to many local charities in Mohave County. He had a heart of gold and was willing to help anyone out. If there was a ride going on he was there. As I spent time talking with his son, he was glad to know how patriotic and selfless his father was. We are all missing his enthusiasm and lighthearted comments. Our meetings and rides just won't be the same. I know Tom would want us all to carry on and keep up the fight. Even though we may have lost a battle by losing Tom we will definitely win the war. Coyote will always be with us in our hearts and memories as we do the work he was so passionate about. Rodney Rich Coordinator Mohave County Chapter ABATE of Arizona

lawsuit against the NYSP and New York State on behalf of ABATE of New York and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM).
RIDER TRAINING TRUMPS RIDING EXPERIENCE A new study utilizing a motorcycle simulator has found that formal advanced training is better than the school of Hard Knocks regarding how a rider reacts to emergency situations on the road.
Proner believes the Federal Court will agree that the stops are designed primarily for law enforcement purposes as opposed to public safety purposes. “Rather than promoting any legitimate public safety concern, the checkpoints are intended to harass and intimidate motorcyclists attempting to attend motorcycle events thereby depriving them of their First Amendment right to freedom of assembly as well as their Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment rights to due process, equal protection and freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.”
A Triumph mounted on a custom rig designed and built at the University Nottingham’s Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics & Rider Human Factors in England was used to investigate the attitudes, behaviors and skills of different types of riders according to their level of experience and training, with simulation software projecting different riding scenarios onto a large screen in front of the rider. Three groups; novice, experienced and those who had taken advanced motorcycle training, were put through identical scenarios on the simulator as well as other tasks in the laboratory to test aspects of their hazard perception and behavior. The researchers discovered that experience on its own does not necessarily make riders safer on the road, while those riders who had taken advanced motorcycle safety training used better road positioning to anticipate and respond to hazards, kept to urban speed limits, and actually made better progress through bends than the other groups of novice and experienced bikers. “This is one of the most in-depth studies of its kind ever conducted,” said Dr. Alex Stedmon from the Human Factors Research Group. “Whilst experience seems to help develop rider skills to an extent, advanced training appears to develop deeper levels of awareness, perception and responsibility,” Stedmon noted. “It also appears to make riders better urban riders and quicker, smoother and safer riders in rural settings.” NHTSA STILL PUSHING MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS NATIONWIDE The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has ignored congressional requests to halt or delay a plan to implement and fund motorcycleonly checkpoints nationwide. The first federally-funded checkpoints, dubbed “roadside motorcycle safety checkpoints,” will be launched by the Georgia Department of Public Safety, via a NHTSA grant to the Georgia State Patrol. NHTSA has implemented the checkpoint funding plan despite being asked by members of Congress not to fund the program until the merits were explained. NHTSA has requested applications from law enforcement agencies across the country to conduct “safety checks” that specifically target motorcyclists to pull aside for a lengthy inspection of their vehicle, equipment and paperwork. The New York State Police have been conducting motorcycle-only checkpoints since 2007, often targeting major motorcycle events such as Americade. Seeking a legal remedy to stop the constitutionally questionable roadblocks, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitchell Proner of NYC has filed a class action
NTSB CALLS FOR STATES TO REQUIRE HELMETS The National Transportation Safety Board stated on Tuesday, November 19, that all states should require riders to wear federally approved helmets. Christopher A. Hart, the NTSB’s vice chairman, called motorcycle accidents ”a public health issue." and said that helmet laws have been added for the first time to the NTSB’s “Most Wanted List” of safety improvement priorities. The list is considered a powerful tool by which the NTSB forces legislative change. But highway safety laws are largely left up to the states, which have been increasingly resistant to many federal recommendations, and the transportation agency’s appeal comes at a time when motorcycle deaths have actually been on the decrease since 2009. This is not the first time there has been federal pressure exerted on states to pass helmet laws. In the late 1960s, Congress threatened to withhold highway funding for states failing to adopt universal helmet laws, and within a few years almost every state had a helmet mandate. But by the late 1970s, political resistance and pressure from motorcycle groups convinced Congress to break the link between motorcycle laws and federal highway funds, and over half the states repealed their helmet laws. In 1991, Congress decided to try again, offering safety grants to states that enforced helmet and seatbelt laws. States that didn’t enforce such laws had three percent of their federal highway money redirected to their highway safety programs. Still, only two states re-instituted helmet laws and by 1995 the federal effort was again overturned and five more states soon repealed their helmet laws. Today, only 20 states require all riders to wear helmets, and last year more state legislatures considered laws to repeal helmet laws than to enact them. Forcing states to implement safety regulations is not territory the safety board wants to enter, according to Steve Blackistone, NTSB’s state and local government relations specialist, who said “We are not prescriptive; we cannot mandate implementation.” But on the same day as the NTSB proclamation, the insurance industry advocacy group Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety called upon Congress to observe the NTSB recommendation and “enact federal legislation that would result in all states adopting all-rider helmet use laws.”
NEW JERSEY ESTABLISHES STRINGENT GUIDELINES FOR NEW RIDERS A measure sponsored by Senator Nicholas J. Sacco, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, which would establish safety guidelines for new motorcycle riders in the Garden State was approved by the Assembly recently by a vote of 67-7. The bill, S-736, would enact several motorcycle safety regulations, including a tiered licensing provision. Under the bill, if a person is issued a motorcycle license for a vehicle with a smaller-size engine -less than 231 cubic centimeters -- they would be legally prohibited from operating a motorcycle with an engine displacement of more than 500 cc. Senator Sacco said that this provision would ensure that new motorcycle riders are restricted from operating vehicles with engines that are too powerful for that driver’s skill level. Among other provisions, the bill would also require all applicants under the age of 18 to complete a motorcycle safety program as a condition for licensure or endorsement. The bill was approved by the Senate by a vote of 31-3 on August 23, but must be returned to consider Assembly amendments which were largely technical in nature. If approved in the Senate, it would head to the Governor to be signed into law. MOTORCYCLE SALES DOWN, RIDERSHIP UP Motorcycle sales continue to be hard hit, despite the declared end to the recession, but according to the Motorcycle Industry Council there are other indicators that point to a brighter future for the twowheel industry. Although year-to-date market data reveals an 18.3% drop in new unit sales, tire sales are up 6.6% in 2010 versus 2009, indicating motorcyclists are still enthusiastic about the sport and riding. In addition, motorcycle miles travelled increased by “approximately 5% last year, some 1.3 billion more miles than in 2008,” according to the MIC’s 2009 Motorcycle Owner Survey. "In many ways, we are better poised for a comeback than ever," said Ty van Hooydonk, communications director for the council. CHINA BECOMES THE WORLD’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE PRODUCER China has now overtaken Japan as the largest producer of motorcycles in the world. Yearly, 50 million motorcycles are produced worldwide, and China now produces at least 27.5 million of that figure or a little more than 50% of the total world production. China has already taken over the top spot in world automobile production by producing more cars than Japan and the U.S. combined. Interestingly, some historic American companies like Harley-Davidson are moving ahead for plans to produce motorcycles in China, but whether they will be exported to the U.S. or simply sold in this Asian market is not quite known yet. The city of Chongqing has become China’s motorcycle production center, with more than 10 million motorcycles a year coming out of this modern city
alone. In fact, four of five of the largest Chinese motorcycle brands that produce over 1 million units a year come out of this city. China has more than 130 motorcycle brands. Expect to see more powerful and modern motorcycles coming from China as this nation seeks to become the largest and most powerful economy in the world. OLDER BIKERS HAVE MORE SEX “Older single bikers are putting down more miles than their married counterparts, if you know what we mean,” reported www.clutchandchrome.com about a recently released AARP sex survey. Although the study wasn’t specifically aimed at motorcycle enthusiasts, with a large part of riding demographics firmly in the age bracket surveyed, the study can make riders look at each other in a slightly different light. Aside from older riders having more sex than may be generally considered, results from the AARP sex survey, “Sex, Romance, and Relationships: AARP Survey of Midlife and Older Adults”, also contradicted popular opinion with singles age 45+ showing a higher satisfaction rate and having more sex than married couples in the same age group. But some stereotypes rang true in the AARP study, such as which sex made sex a priority; Men are more than five times as likely as women with 45% vs. 8% to say they think of sex once or more every day, and men also rank sex higher on the list of what makes for a high quality of life. And if any further correlation needed to be drawn between the AARP study and motorcycle enthusiasts, the final conclusion seems to draw a pretty solid line. Just as with riding, the largest predictor of sexual satisfaction is the number of times, or the frequency a respondent gets in the saddle. The number of people who consider themselves satisfied rockets to 84% if they “ride” more than once a week while the number falls to 59% for those who only “hit the road” twice a month. WEIRD NEWS: HEAD GAMES In Lagos, Nigeria, motorcycle taxis called “okada” are so dangerous in that local hospitals have special orthopedic wards meant just for people who have suffered accidents while riding them. So you'd think a law requiring passengers to wear helmets would be welcomed. But it turns out that, for many Nigerians, the only thing scarier than a motorcycle taxi is a motorcycle helmet. Many people refuse to wear them out of fear of juju, or supernatural powers. Some fret that previous passengers may have put nefarious juju spells on the helmets to steal someone's good fortune, or to make a person disappear in order to be used in a sacred ritual. "Our people are quite superstitious about anything dealing with their head," says Ralph Ibuzo, who created the “Original Lapa Guard”, a cloth cap that he claims can protect wearers from disease and sudden disappearance. "People believe that if you put on a helmet, [others] can take away your brain, or your good luck," he told the Wall Street Journal, so the hygienic cap provides a thin layer of separation between the head and a helmet full of potential trouble.

Back To Broke reprinted from http://backtobroke.blogspot.com
take a pliers to peel my tongue off the roof of my mouth.
This is a blog detailing a motorcycle trip around the world starting August 15th 2009 and ending September 2010. All told I plan to visit about 40 countries and in the process ride somewhere in between 40 and 50 thousand miles.
After a serious amount of graft in the last couple of days we ride at 10am tomorrow.
From there we rolled to Needles where both of us discovered a problem with our bikes, Helmars sump guard is ready to fall off, 2 of the bolts have disintegrated, and my final drive is leaking. First day...not 200 miles driven and we've both got non trivial problems with the bikes, but we'll be able to get them sorted in Phoenix.....now before any of the lads back home chime in.... the hughes lad did not do anything in the way of maintenance on the final drive..... I can hear the derisory tsks from here!
The last 48 hours have been a real eye opener for us in terms of getting a feel for the different types of problems we'll see. We spent about 2 hours today just talking about what exactly we were trying to do and why.... somewhere in all the running around over the last 7 days we lost sight of it a bit, but were back on track.
We spent a good part of today riding on Route 66, and for over an hour we only saw 1 truck and 1 car on the road. With it being September the tourist season has dried up so the road is empty. We pulled into Kingman Arizona tonight with the first day done ....having covered about 350miles...... it feels great to be back on the road.
We also knocked out all the final packing, the bikes are tip top, all the modifications are complete, the bikes are serviced and ready to go, and the weights are balanced with each pannier carrying 30lbs of kit....and most importantly we managed to fit everything we need to take into the available space without having to break out the KY jelly.
Thanks for all the messages of support.... Really appreciated...!! The big fella
T-1 Friday, October 9, 2009
Day 1 of the project starts tomorrow...we ride out to Kingman on Route 66.... and the wheels wont stop for almost 50,000 miles through 39 countries.... May the force be with us The big fella Kingman Arizona Crazy Crazy day. First off, today was hot...so hot my arse is cooked and ready for carving, not that there'll be too many takers .... never really went below 40degC all day and even tonight long after the sun went down it was still over 40. I've seen it all before but I was wearing my new Alpine star all weather waterproof goretex trousers.... guaranteed to protect you no matter what the weather......whats the best way to describe it....hmmmmm........did you ever see the episode of Friends where Ross has the leather pants?....same sort of thing.... by the end of the day my trousers felt like a big two legged condom on me.....I thought I would be taking them off with a paint scraper by the end of the day..... Anyway back to the story.... we left Los Angeles about 2 hours late this morning, always takes more time to pack that you'd think.... and we burned straight away for Barstow about 2 hours north of Los Angeles. It marks the end of the LA traffic so is a great place to pull over and take a break. I was so thirsty I had to
Prescott Arizona Today was pretty straight forward, just cruised on route 66 for the first half of the day, and for the second headed down to see Helmar's sister in Prescott Arizona, last time he'll see her for a year....family first and all that good stuff... On the way to her house the 2 of us drove through a swarm of bee's.... first time its ever happened to me...best way I can describe it is..... its as if someone was to throw a bucket of bees at you at 60mph. They were splattered all over the windshield and visor with about 5 of them... or what was left of them making it into my beard. Helmar got a bunch right in the mush....one blowing up on his sunglasses. After wiping all the "Bee Ass" and "Bee brain" out of my beard it was time to head on.....how neither of us didn't get stung I'll never know... the 65mph probably had a lot to do with it though. We'd a good few more problems with the bikes today, my final drive is pissing oil...and Helmar's front bulb blew which is on top of his sump guard issues. More than enough going on to keep the eyebrows raised. Most used phrase in the last 48hours...."BMW's man...fuckin BMW's" We stopped in a cool cafe called the RoadKill Cafe for grub.... I was here last year.... the best apple pie...you know its good when your taking a nap later and your still thinking about it.... Over the next 3 days we make our way back up to Utah, were heading to
Coast to Coast (continued) Aside from preventing paranormal paranoia, Mr. Ibuzo also has the law on his side as this sub-Saharan city enacted a traffic regulation last year that requires okada passengers to don helmets. But despite efforts at enforcement by city officials and traffic police, most passengers refuse to wear them out of concern about juju, widely feared throughout West Africa.
QUOTABLE QUOTE: "The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first." Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), 3rd President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence
Bonneville for the speed trials, and then coming back down through Canyon country before scooting on back down to Phoenix. From there its on to Tombstone...and then we cross into Mexico at Douglas in about 8 or 9 days.....
them changing out the seals on the bike and we ended up buying a heap of stuff which we don't have room for....but thats thats what God invented butter and hair for...if it wont fit...either butter it or put some hair round the available space...it'll definitely fit then.
In terms of how the filming is coming on were probably averaging a D "Minus", main issue being that any time the HD cameras come out we both turn into orangutans and cant get a sentence out to save our lives.... but we'll get better....
The worrying thing is that 3 days into the trip...we've had 2 complete and utter show stoppers with the bikes...make no mistake had these issues happened in Bolivia in the desert they would have been identifying us by the age of the vulture poo on our bones.
Take care Oisin Phoenix...not the plan! The plan today was to head to Sunset Crater, but as Samuel L Jackson said in Die Hard 3... "you can stick your well laid plans up your well laid ..."....you know the rest.... This morning I went out to fill up the bike with Gas, when I came back I noticed a small pool of final drive oil on the ground, and given it only has 180ml worth of storage capacity in the area....this was a major problem. It had been dripping but we'd been topping it up and getting by...with this much of a pool forming in just a second or two the drive could leak all the oil and tear itself apart in a matter of minutes. After I inserted about 2 billion euro in the swear jar we burned straight down to Phoenix to Victory BMW where we got it repaired. The guys there were great and took us in straight away. As the folks were working on my bike we decided to head off and find a place to stay. No sooner was Helmar's key in the ignition that he had an EWS failure which is where "something very bad happens" and the bike wont start...so all of a sudden we had both our bikes on the operating table. So we just hung out in BMW all day, the guys there were great and let us film
Looks like both bikes are in good shape now, and I booked mine in for a full service when we get back here in a week to make sure its tip top before heading south into mexico. Bottom line... 3 days into the trip... already 3 days behind schedule! :-) ....and I'm about as confident in these 1200's as I am in a central american government staying in office for a full term. To drown our sorrows we had a couple of 22 ounce fosters in a frosted glass in the outback steakhouse..... Mmmmm! :-) Anyway...tomorrow we try again to get to sunset crater.... we'll see how it goes. Over and out... and a big thanks to the guys in victory BMW... The Big fella Ten Miles norh of Page Arizona The forecast today was for storms north of Phoenix and the weather guys were spot on. About 70 miles south of Flagstaff we got pummeled by a doozie.. you can see the video footage above.... the best of its towards the end... We headed for sunset crater, where they filmed a piece of Easy rider, but it was overcast, and the fact that we were soaked through meant that we didn't real-

Hamster Time "It's one of nature's ways that we often feel closer to distant generations than to the generation immediately preceding us".......... Igor Stravinski Good Morning America. Well, it's finally time....As I look outside at this very moment, the snow is falling, the skies are gray and dreary, ice is forming over the streets. In other words a perfect time to head south ( if not in person , at least in your mind). Time to mount up and head to a place that time has forgot, a tavern no less. A tavern that has a history all it's own and has been standing in the same spot since long before motorcycles ever past it's porch or before the roads were ever paved. A place where you can actually feel the history seeping from the timbers of it's walls and walk in the steps of the ghost of Civil War soldiers and native Americans . A place lost in time where the mountain people are real and where Bikers feel at home. If you look up Bob's Place on Facebook you'll see it described as a small town bar with deep roots and deep history. It's run by a incredible woman named Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson has ran the bar for 59 years and has the perfect attitude to manage it for another 59 years. I have absolutely no idea where the "small town" was because Bob's place sort of materializes out of no where but where the heart of the hillbilly nation and Southern pride proudly exist. The trip to Bob's Place was about a two hour ride from our base camp at Maggie Valley, North Carolina but the roads that surround that area are so beautiful you don't want to be in a hurry. Waterfalls
and streams are abundant and there's lot of places to pull off and enjoy the scenery. These are roads you want to savior. I know a lot of you might be familiar with Deal's gap or as it's most commonly referred to as "The Dragon". The famous road that runs between Tennessee and North Carolina. With it's 318 turns in 11 miles. Well every mile that we road on that day was equally as challenging and as beautiful. With switchbacks and hairpin turns that passed countless mountaintops and amazing vistas. After riding about 90 minutes we crossed into Pickens County, South Carolina and from there is was just a hop, skip and a jump to Bob's Place. Most of my 18 friends that had made the trip had visited Bob's place the year before so it was like old home week when we arrived. The stories they told made Bob's Place the highlight of the trip and I was soon to discover most of the stories were true. Except there were no live chickens running around the place and the floor had been covered with plywood. As we pulled into the lot several things immediately caught my eye.The most prominent feature that drew my attention was the large American and Rebel flags crossed on the roof..There's a large porch wraps around the front and side of the building and it's got an assortment of different chairs and tables that offer a nice spot to kick back and relax.. The structure itself appears like an ancient building. A building with a stone foundation and timber beams cut by hands of men long since gone and no inside plumbing.
Bob's Place is one of warmth and welcome. Bob's Place is perfect for the off the beaten path crowd . If you like a stuffy, phony or pretentious sort of joint, you may not feel the love at Bob's Place. The Restrooms are outside and the beer is stale and as old as the building but served with a smile and easy conversation from Mrs. Johnson (if she feels like getting up). Otherwise you get your own beer and just leave the money on the bar. The walls are adorned with stories, pictures, newspaper clippings. Even a newspaper story about a former president who stopped by Bob's Place when he was campaigning. White Christmas lights that hang year around add a certain ambience and charm to the place. As we were enjoying our time at Bob's something extraordinary happened. A nice couple in their mid 30's pulled up wanting to take some pictures of all of us standing around the bar. Of course, we invited them to have a beer with us and they informed us it was their wedding anniversary. We ask if they wanted to renew their vowels because one of us also happened to be an ordained minister. They said yes, so a couple of the girls picked a bunch of wild flowers for a bouquet and we all gathered in front of Bob's Place, bowed our heads and had a beautiful little ceremony. To many of us it was the high point of the trip. I know God was listening..All to soon, it was time to leave Bob's Place. The weather in the mountains is sporadic and sometimes can be downright unpredictable. The weather had turned terrible. Rain , fog, slick roads you name it and
we experienced it. I was second to the last bike and was riding extremely cautiously when I completely lost my vision due to the blinding rain ( no pun intended) . I reached up to wipe my goggles and to clear my vision and discovered several important things in the blink of an eye; The road made a sharp right hand turn down a hill, I was on the wrong side of the road, an SUV was coming the opposite direction and there was a storm ditch directly in front of me . Hello Mr. Ditch ! I had no idea if there was a cliff or exactly what lay on the other side of that ditch but it sure beat the idea of slamming head long into the front end of that SUV. I knew if I locked up my breaks, that's exactly what would have happened. As it turned out, the ditch was as hard as a soft cotton ball but I did dig a hell of a deep furrow in the side of it, but in the end not a scratch on me or my Harley... Oh yea, it shook me up real good and I took a couple of minutes to regain my composure . The guy in that SUV was awesome, he stopped traffic and helped push my bike from that ditch. My Brother D-Rail came up behind me right after I went down he said " Hamster, I don't know how you did that, I saw the whole thing" . I told him I didn't, the man upstairs did.. Like I said, I know God was not only listening but paying mighty close attention and the fact that I'm writing this today is all the proof you need. Remember, you can always buy another motorcycle, you can't buy another you ! Peace..... Until Next Month.......... Hamster

Discrimination can range from a sign stating "No Colors" or "No Motorcycle Parking" or "No Motorcycle Attire" etc., to simply being asked to leave a place of business, just because you are on a motorcycle or because of your riding apparel. If anything like this happens to you, PLEASE fill out this form in its entirety and send it to the address noted. Back To Broke (continued) ly get anything out of it. From there we headed towards some Indian ruins (cant remember the name) and as we worked our way through 2 or 3 areas the sun finally came out and treated us to one of the best sunsets I've seen in a long time.
the big fella
Once it got dark we headed out for Page in northern Arizona. The road cuts directly north and our left side the sun had gone down leaving an orange hue floating above the distant hills. On our right side the moon was coming up reflecting the orange color as it rose above the cliffs that seem to be everywhere in this part of the world.
We took off from the Cowboy Inn, 9 miles north of Page and moved out for Zion Canyon. I was cranky because I didn't have a bit of grub in 24 hours, and hadn't had a drink of water since about 8pm the previous evening.... The Hughes 1970 machine is a 4 liter engine which runs for about 4 hours before it starts to break down....24hours without nose bag..... this is how rampages begin. Although to be fair I could miss grub for a week and still have more chins than a Chinese phone book...so it probably did me good.
Every now and then the moon would get covered by a cloud and the whole world would go completely dark, highway 89 is a two lane highway with only a set of cats eyes to light your way. Several times I came over a hill with the full beams on and the cats eyes in the center of the road seemed to stretch off into Infinity, with nothing but pitch blackness all around.... it was like riding in a dream. As you get closer to Page the road cuts its way though mountains which were just shadows due to the hour of the night but with Helmar riding behind me my shadow was thrown up onto the cliffs as we cut our way north. The last part of the ride the moon came back out and lit up the whole countryside. We got to Page and on account of it being Memorial day weekend over here the whole place was sold out. We went 10 miles up the road to the cowboy inn where every room had its own name and theme.... my room was called rodeo rider.... I thought to myself.......Jayzus.....I'd love a ride! Pretty much just went in turned off the light and went to bed.... but what a great day... and no problems with my bike... Helmars horse (nicknamed Ruby) continues to give a problem or two...see above..
Panguitch, Utah Weather was gorgeous all day today, thank you "Hey-Suus", much appreciated.
Off we went into Zion.... if you haven't been make it your next holiday, you wont be dissappointed. Were constantly experimenting with different camera types and angles. Right now we've got the big production camera .... which if I was to upload a file to the internet from would be the equivalent of trying to suck a coconut up your john thomas, in a word way too large.
Anyway...enough shite talk .... after the canyon we headed up to Panguitch and booked into the Marianna motel, and went out for dinner. Overheard the conversation below between 2 adjoining tables of guys who obviously knew each other.... First Guy at one table: Man....that apple pie is really hitting the spot! Second guy at other table: .... Yeah the spot on your Ass..... First Guy again: ... its cooling down the JalapeĂąos! A really good day.... The big fella
The other is the Hand held HD cameras, again way too big, and then the POV cams which are attached to the bikes, these are ok. On top of that we've tried some cheapo HD cameras, you can see the output of each above...its not great but we think we can make it work. All of these integration problems have convinced us to spend a day on just integrating formats and see if we can get an output which meets our needs. So were going to do just that and hopefully get a working product.....ps thanks for all the feedback that the videos were crappy quality... don't worry these aren't the formats were using for the production. Last count we were carrying 10 different cameras!.....
Later
Probably worth adding at this point that if we'd read the manuals we wouldn't have had half the problems... however..... we are men....we don't read manuals....ask for directions.....read any form of instructions.....we reserve the right to piss all over the toilet seat....support the same football team forever and get into a bad mood every time they lose.....and remark that Brittney spears has put on some weight while we shift our Moobs (Man Boobs) out from under our armpits..... if the girls think they are getting a raw deal .... just remember who has to put out bins every Tuesday... nuff said.
Ely Nevada We had intended to try and make it to Bonneville for the speed trials today but by 6pm this evening we were both wrecked so pulled into Ely instead, leaving only 130 mile jaunt tomorrow morning. We finished the day off sitting on a patio downing a couple of frosted Coors lites (watching the figure)......after a day in the desert...sooooo good! :-) Had a dream last night where I woke up covered in spiders. I cant help wondering what part of evolution thought it would be useful for our survival if every now and then we woke up roaring in utter ter-
ror! I went in for a shower and there was a teeney weeney little spider on the wall.... hit him with the equivelent of a lump hammer about 20 times... The big thing we did today was to head up to the Great Basin National park, a 10000ft view of the desert with a couple of bristle cone trees at the top; some of the oldest trees in the world I'm reliably informed. Today we roll to bonneville, which is becoming a regular outing for me at this stage...but its Helmars first time and we should be able to get some great stuff there..... later Oisin Bonneville Baby We spent the last 2 days in Bonneville, the idea was we'd take a day off and pretty much do nothing. We booked into a casino for 2 nights. As it turned out it was a bad idea, the casino was tacky, the room was a country mile from where we had to park the bikes and we'd to hike all the kit back and forward 3 or 4 times to get all the stuff to the rooms. We went down to the salt flat with the idea being we'd film some speed runs, i.e. we'd run one of the bikes up to 100mph and see if we could film it. We'd also get the footage on the POV cameras so when it comes time to make the production we could cut the whole thing together and it might make a good scene. One of the problems we encountered was that there was a lot of rain in the previous week so the salt was a lot softer than normal which completely covered the bikes in salt and made the bikes swish back and forward a lot more than normal. With all this in mind I set off shitting

Back To Broke (continued) bricks to do the run, you can hear the nervous gibberish coming out of me in the video. I ran it up to 100mph twice and it was pretty nerve wracking, but exhilarating at the same time. While 100mph isn't that fast, to do it on softish salt I reckon is pretty radical, however theres lots of folks driving machines here during speed week well above 200mph. Once we were done we headed to the buffet, and nailed about 30,000 calories a piece.... the grub was magic.....and in a day or two I'm going to be "falling off the top" of the crap of the century. Wendover is a bit of a dump, usual story in towns where you have casinos, theres always at least as many pawn shops. The casino's are full of elderly people playing slots and by and large no one seems to be happy or smiling.....the staff in the hotels
Call for Bids
etc are all brimming with attitude, I guess its hard to attract good staff into the desert. The mad thing is that the town should be great..... it should market itself to petrol heads and speed enthusiasts all over the world....but the speedway is hardly mentioned in the town really, or at least you would never know that 5 miles out of town theres people riding machines on the ragged edge. Anyhoot, were done here and moving out to Phoenix via Monument valley. Hope you enjoy the vids above. The big fella to be continued...

January Safety Article By TC Fulgham, Phoenix-Shadow Mountain Safety Officer Well folks we made it to 2011 Hope all of you had a great, safe and wonderfull holiday season . With that said we now need to get back to the subject at hand and I hope you all thought about a rider safety course this year . Veteran riders as well as novice riders can use this information . You can never have enough info and training with the way people drive out there . If you see a younger rider who is riding like they just got the bike , start a conversation with them and bring up the subject of training and see if they have taken a course . If they give you that old line about how they don't need that you can always let them know you have been riding for 25+ years and you take one to refresh your skills . Have a Masterlink
handy in your saddlebag to give them , which has a fine selection of courses listed in it , and show them the page with the list on it . You maybe saven a life with this action , maybe your own . Now on to my pet peeve this morning . Ipod use while riding . I have noticed an alarming increase in use of Ipods from riders . I have noticed several times riders messing with them at stop lights and not watching what is going on at the light and with traffic around them . Not only this but with that in there ears with the volume up I wonder how many of them have failed to hear a Firetruck coming up behind them , or that horn from the car that wasn't watching coming up behind them also . You add a helmet on top of that from the sportbike riders and how much more is your hearing cut down . On
top of that it is a major distraction while riding and illegal in the state of Arizona . Inattentive riders as well as drivers are a major reason for accidents . Now you will say " What about the bagger riders with cd players and Ipod hook ups " ? Well they can be a distaction but they also don't have things in there ears either which let's them hear more while riding around town . " What about those who have CB and rider passenger intercoms " ? I don't like the use of these either because they also cut down on your hearing and can distract from where the attention should be and that is what is going on around you Now I do use ear plugs on long rides to cut down on wind noise . I find I can still hear very well what is going on around me and I don't have that roar in my ears
which after awhile you can't hear anything else but the wind and that is an issue . When you come into town and go back to stop light traffic ,and you still have wind noise in your ears , it could have an effect on what you hear coming up behind you . Plus it can also lead to hearing loss over time which has been proven . Now whether you use ear plugs or not is up to you , but earphone ( Ipod ) is illegal and is it worth the possible ticket or a possible accident to hear that favorite song one more time before getting to work ? For me , no is the answer I come up with . Untill next month TC
