had introduced legislation to end the program by prohibiting any future Federal funding of any motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. That bill is HR 904. The mammoth highway bill includes the same language as contained in HR 904.

abateofaz.org

ABATE of AZ. 7509 N. 12th St, #200 Phoenix, AZ 85020

According to the Motorcycle Riders Foundation reports that Wednesday, February 1st, the US House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has rolled out the latest version of the highway bill. The bill is the long term funding bill for road construction and highway programs.

This version of the bill takes aim at a controversial practice of the Department of Transportation which funded motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints with taxpayer dollars. The checkpoints have drawn much criticism from the motorcycle community at large. So much so, that longtime motorcycle champion Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-WI)

Representative Sensenbrenner had this to say, "We need to focus on proven methods of motorcycle safety, including crash prevention, rider education, and training and proper licensing. Motorcycle-only checkpoints are an intrusive governmental overreach that place an undue burden on riders while doing little to actually improve safety," He added, "It is encouraging to see that the transportation reauthorization bill will encourage more efficient use of taxpayer dollars and smart motorcycle safety policy." Representative Tom Petri (R-WI), a staunch defender of the motorcyclists, had this comment on the issue, “Motorcycle riders are right to be outraged at being singled out for safety inspections," Petri said. "Nobody is suggesting flagging cars down for unscheduled inspections, and there's no good reason why motorcycles should be treated differently. It's unnecessarily intrusive, and not a smart way to use limited police resources."

At this point I can hear you saying “What the ***** do I care what happens in Wisconsin!” You should care, because if you don’t care and you aren’t vigilant in watching what happens

in other states, one day you’ll wonder how the hell a practice like “motorcycle-only checkpoints” got started in Arizona! It’s a money maker for the state and one day when the folks at the dome decide that we need to be protected from ourselves it’ll be like fishin’ from the pier. So this is the reason we have MRO’s and one of the reasons it is not enough to say “I don’t want to get involved in politics.” If we don’t pay attention we will pay the price of freedom.

To everyone that had the opportunity to attend Day at the Dome and visit with their Legislators, thank you. Remember, you don’t have to wait for this event to communicate with your legislators, let them know that you vote and that you are paying attention to how they vote on issues that are important to you. MDATD does not have to be a once a year event, this is your state, your legislature, “keep in touch” with them by, e-mail, visit or phone call, you can help them with their campaigns. You will be pleasantly surprised, by the results of your efforts. Stand up and be counted! Carole O’Reilly

Officer reports:

Hello to all my Brothers & Sisters;

Many prospective members may ask you a simple question when they are approached to join ABATE of Arizona. I feel this is a simple answer to their question. WHY BELONG TO AN ORGANIZATION:

How many times have you been asked to join an organization or asked why you belong to an organization – or what can association “do for me”?

Since it costs money to belong to an organization, it is logical to ask, “What can an organization do for me?” A probable answer could be nothing! An organization can do things with you (with your support, expertise, cooperation, etc.), but not for you per se. Apply the same principles to a business – it can’t do anything for you unless you do something for it. If, you invest money in a business as well as your time and energy. The degree of success depends on the talents, time, and energy expended, even more than the amount of money invested.

The same holds true for organization. The dues-dollars represent an investment, just as it does in one’s business. There are certain functions and services that the organization, acting in concert with its membership, can perform – but to be successful in its efforts, the association requires the support and involvement of its members. It needs the collective thinking of all concerned to formulate plans, and it requires the physical effort of its membership to put those plans into operation.

A potential member who rebels against paying association dues is always the first to criticize and to say the organization does him no good. However, he is always on the front line to take the benefits that come his way as a result of the

organization and its dues-paying members. These benefits just don’t happen. They are the results of a lot of hard work and effort by our Officers and members who devote time and energy to get the tasks done. Just as 100 individuals going their separate ways in trying to dam a river – dig a tunnel or build a highway - would result in disorganized chaos, so it is with any organization that lacks the power of an association effort. But, just as the efforts of those 100 individual (organized under a single leadership with mutually agreed plans and specs) can dam that river, push a tunnel through or get a highway down – so goes an association function, by taking many small parts and joining them into a cohesive mass that gives the group power.

Granted that benefits of association membership are many and varied, there still are those who fail to see how it will benefit them. My answer to this group is simply, “Come on in and find out. Get your feet wet.” Join ABATE of Arizona.

Organizations, after all, are a lot like insurance. When one has no problems, he has no need of insurance. When he does have a problem, if he doesn’t have insurance, it’s too late for it to help. Our life style has many potential problems with numerous government dealings, Law enforcement dealings, environmental issues, etc. The motorcyclist who comes face to face with one of those problems before he joins an association will be just like the man with no fire insurance watching his house burn down.

Remember, Democracy begins with you, and Democracy only works when you get involved!!!

Drive now text later. You can’t do both.

MASTERLINK MARCH 2012 NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

ILLINOIS MOTORCYCLISTS CAN NOW LEGALLY RUN RED LIGHTS Motorcyclists in Illinois will no longer be stuck indefinitely at stoplights, as effective January 1st the Land of Lincoln joined eleven other states that allow riders to proceed through malfunctioning red lights.

Sensors that trigger light changes often aren't sensitive enough to detect motorcycles, which prompted the Illinois legislature to pass HB S860, supported by ABATE of Illinois, which allows motorcycles stopped at a red light to go through the light if it doesn't turn green after a "reasonable" amount of time. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn vetoed the bill, claiming it "endangers our motorists" because it allows the motorcyclist to determine how long is "reasonable," but both the House and Senate voted to override the veto and the original bill became law.

The new law, as now on the books, states: "After stopping, the driver of a motorcycle or bicycle facing a steady red signal which fails to change to a green signal within a reasonable period of time because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle or bicycle due to the vehicle’s size or weight, shall have the right to proceed subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign as required by section 11-1204 of this code." The law applies only to municipalities with a population of less than two million, so the city of Chicago is exempted.

Similar so-called "dead red" laws have been enacted in Minnesota (2002), Tennessee (2003), Arkansas (2005), Idaho (2006), Wisconsin (2006), North Carolina (2007), South Carolina (2008), Missouri (2008), Oklahoma (2010), Kansas (2011) and Virginia (2011). In Texas and California, state law requires stoplights to be fitted with sensors that detect motorcycles.

LAS VEGAS CLUBS SUE OVER POLICE HARASSMENT A group of Nevada motorcycle clubs is suing Metro Police, accusing the Las Vegas police department of violating the constitutional rights of bikers. The Confederation of Clubs and Scoundrels Pub filed the lawsuit Wednesday, January 11, claiming that "The police are interfering with private business and telling private businesses that they cannot allow certain motorcycle clubs inside their private businesses."

Their attorney says Metro Police officers harassed bikers and threatened to pull liquor licenses at local biker bars, like Scoundrels, based solely on the businesses' clientele.

The lawsuit includes a letter Metro PD sent to Scoundrels Pub last June that states an event involving the Vagos Motorcycle Club violated Clark County code and could put the pub's liquor license at risk.

Coast to Coast

"We've not asked for a penny. We don't want money. We just want to get recognition of the situation and get the Metro Police Department to give us our constitutional rights. That's all we're asking for," said Bandido Motorcycle Club Las Vegas President Rich Novicelli in an interview with CBSaffiliate 8NewsNow. Metro declined to comment. JUDGE BARS N.H. TOWNS FROM ENACTING STRICTER NOISE LAWS New Hampshire cities and towns cannot impose limits on motorcycle noise that are stricter than what state law allows, a Rockingham County judge has ruled.

"If each town in New Hampshire had the authority to enact different noise emission ordinances, the state would be subject to a checkerboard pattern of laws," ruled Superior Court Judge Kenneth McHugh on Dec. 9. "For example, a motorcyclist who complies with the state noise emission limit could be precluded from driving through a town because that town enacted a lower noise emission limit than the state." The judge's decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the Seacoast Harley-Davidson dealership, which filed suit against the town of North Hampton, successfully arguing the town did not have legal authority to adopt its own motorcycle noise ordinance. North Hampton adopted a noise ordinance at a May 2010 Town Meeting, requiring all motorcycles operated in the town to have exhaust noise limited to 80 decibels. State law permits motorcycles to reach 106 dB.

After the ordinance passed, the local police chief refused to enforce the ordinance, describing it as unconstitutional and explaining that law enforcement and the town could face legal action if they enforced a lower noise threshold than state law allows. Similarly, McHugh found the local ordinance to be "in direct conflict" with state law and ruled the town of North Hampton "is hereby prohibited from adopting or enforcing the ordinance." In granting the permanent injunction, the judge noted in his decision that the N.H. House of Representatives' Transportation Committee rejected a bill to enact a law that was similar to the North Hampton ordinance.

McHugh also noted that the town administrator was notified by the federal Environmental Protection Agency that it does not grant cities and towns "any additional authority to control environmental noise beyond that available to them under state and local law."

House Bill 1442 has since been introduced in an attempt to lower the state's motorcycle noise limit to the federal standard of 80 dB and would require that any motorcycle brought in for servicing to have EPA-compliant mufflers installed at that time. Similar measures have failed to pass three times in the past four years due to what

the bill’s sponsor calls “fierce” opposition from the powerful motorcycle lobby.

LIVE FREE AND RIDE A New Hampshire legislator wants his state’s “Live Free or Die” slogan emblazoned across motorcycle license plates. While he hasn’t straddled a bike in some years, State Rep. Tim Copeland (R-Stratham) said "it's a great saying" that shouldn't be limited to license plates on cars and trucks. He said the idea was hatched at a convention for lawmakers where candy trays were sold that were made by inmates out of defective license plates. While looking at those candy dishes, Copeland wondered why the quote — from a toast made in 1809 by General John Stark — isn't celebrated on the backs of motorcycles. Rep. Copeland said there would be no additional cost to the state and he's been told there's nothing logistical to prevent stamping the state slogan onto the smaller motorcycle plates.

Copeland's bill is with the House Transportation Committee and proposes replacing the word "motorcycle" at the top of all motorcycle plates with the state motto.

SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR PROMISES TO VETO A HELMET LAW Less than two years after a State Supreme Court ruling barred the city of Myrtle Beach, S.C. from enforcing a mandatory helmet law stricter than the state’s requirement for riders under 21 to wear them, a helmet law for all

motorcyclists statewide has been introduced in the South Carolina legislature. Senate Bill 1046 was read in Senate for the first time Tuesday and has been referred to the transportation committee. South Carolina required all riders to wear helmets from 1967 until 1980 when the legal mandate was limited to young riders. The attempt to change back to a comprehensive helmet law is opposed by groups such ABATE of South Carolina which is challenging the bill saying that they have no problem with helmets, but don't agree that it’s the government’s responsibility to police personal safety.

Governor Nikki Haley met with biker rights lobbyists recently on the steps of the State House, where she promised them she would veto the bill. Gov. Haley, a member of Lexington County's ABATE, told bikers at the capitol that the senate has more important matters to focus on. She told them to tell their legislators, "Don't waste your time," because even if it does pass, she'll veto it.

In 2007 the state formed a motorcycle safety task force to look at ways to lower fatalities. That group did not recommend a mandatory helmet law. Currently, only 20 states require all motorcyclists to wear helmets, 27 only require them for younger or inexperienced riders, while three require no helmet use at all. FRENCH TO REQUIRE REFLEC-

East Valley Chapter

Well, hello to everyone. It’s great riding weather right now. I can’t believe how mild the winter has been. Hope everyone has a chance to take advantage of it. We have a very special thanks going out to Robin Munn for hosting our Jan. meeting at her house. She made breakfast for everyone. She made killer biscuits and gravy and all kinds of other things. Thanks Robin, you’re the best.

By the time you all get this the East Valley chapter Valentine party will have come and gone. Everyone always has a great time. Special thanks to Jess Method and the Valentine committee for organized it and throwing a great party. Hope you did something special for your significant other. On March 17th the CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association) is having their annual benefit for Sunshine Acres Children’s Home. Sunshine Acres is on Higley rd. between the 202 and McDowell rd. It all starts at 10:00am.As always the East Valley Chapter will be cooking and serving the food. We have been cooking for this as long as I can remember. It’s a great day for the kids that live there. The kids get free motorcycle rides around the complex by the great people that show up. Come on out and enjoy the day with the kids and give them a ride. They really love it.

All right, it’s time to get “ON THE BOX” (soap box that is). I’m having a problem with the TV media. Every time they do a report on an accident involving a motorcycle they always make it a point to say if the rider was wearing a helmet or not. Why is that? Fact is that the majority of motorcycle fatalities are from body trauma not head trauma. Not to say that head trauma is not a factor. The way they tell it, no one would get killed if everyone had a helmet on. We all know that is not true. Why is it that they almost never tell the rest of the story? Like if the person that caused the accident happened to turn left in front of the motorcycle or debris that blew off a car or truck that was on the road caused the cyclist to go down. Maybe a car ran a red light or pulled out in front of a motorcyclist. Maybe they were driving erratically and pushed a biker off the road or in to a guardrail. The fact is that we never get a fair shake with the media. You never hear about us promoting Motorcycle training and education. How we are teaching in the driver’s Ed. Classes in the high schools. How we do motorcycle awareness events for the parents and the kids. We work really hard just to be SEEN! Why don’t the media help us with awareness and education? If they partnered with us to promote training and awareness just think about how much more we could do. I can’t remember how many times I have seen an interview were the person said “I didn’t see him” What’s it going to take people. OK, time to get off the box. I just bite my pencil in half. Remember, pay attention out there. Pretend that you are invisible because to the cars and trucks out there most of the time YOU ARE!

Be safe out there.

High Country Chapter

Well hello brothers and sisters,

A nice time to be riding down in the valley, but not so warm up here in high country, for those who ride up here ya'll know what I am saying, I hope everyone made it to M.D.A.D. if you did, I am proud of you because I sit here healing from my back injury! Well we have our motors running, getting things ready for WILD IN THE WEEDS camp out hope to see you up here for this event. It is a real good time, live music and free camping with your paid admission, bead run, and biker games. The first weekend in may is the date.

Chicknbone H.C.C. Coordinator Hi all,

Chapter Reports

Mohave Chapter

Thing are looking up here in Mohave County. We have sign up several new members and Don Russell has several prospects in the works.

We have begun our planning for our Mohave County Freedom Rights Rally. We have set a date of April 8th from 1 4pm. That should be interesting, as turn out for our meetings has been disappointing. However, I guess we aren't alone in that department. I'm sure if we promote this right, we can get a good turnout. We also have been pursuing the possibility of Map classes in Bullhead, Havasu and Kingman. Since the public schools have out sourced Drivers Ed, it's a little difficult to work this out with the schools. Any ideas from the other chapters will be appreciated.

The warm weather will be here soon, and there are a lot of runs coming up in the next month or two, which will give us the opportunity to go after more new members and promote our Rally. We will post the flyer in next months Masterlink. Ride safe, Joe Monfredo Coordinator, MCC

Northern Arizona Chapter

Today was the Northern Arizona Chapters second meeting. We now have 4 new members, 2 transfers and 2 new members. Who knew people actually read this column, lol, that's how our transfers found out about us. So we are working on putting a run together for April. What a big difference the north is compared to the valley. In the valley you can ride all year, but in the north it snows. They tell me April will be the beginning of riding season, I guess that gives us more time to concentrate on preserving our rights and educating the public about giving motorcycles the respect we deserve on the road. Although I must say there were quit a few bikes out today because it was perfect riding weather. It amuses me that there can be snow on the ground but still be a gorgeous day to ride.

On another note, we need members, especially members willing to step up and fill our officer positions. Being a new chapter we are all learning together, so experience is not required, just someone with a little extra time they can give to the cause. We welcome everyone to come check us out, whether you want to be an officer or not.

Well, as we grow we will have more to report, so for now ride safe and watch out for the idiots not watching out for you. Northern Arizona Chapter (NAC) ABATE of Arizona

Southern Arizona Chapter

This year Southern AZ Chapter is further building local ties within the motorcycle and business community. This is more than a wish it is something that comes from inside to facilitate cohesion and support not only for ourselves but for the many others that ride as well. Our chapter members are participating and becoming involved with causes/events such as B.A.C.A. (Bikers Against Child Abuse), Ride for the Red, etc. We have passed out flyers, attended meetings and in each way we need to contribute our part. These are the basic tools that build relationships that will stand the test of time. ABATE being an MRO we do set the bar by helping and supporting local events in some fashion, from helping with registration, packing ride bags etc.

MASTERLINK MARCH 2012

It just takes time and it always is well received and appreciated by those in need. To be able to pass out our own flyers at others events is huge, everyone benefits as I can not emphasize this enough. The support returned to us can be boundless...

Our first run/event will be held on Sat. May 12th 2012. Titled "CAN YOU SEE ME NOW!" is to raise awareness of motorcycles on our roads and we demand to be seen! By sheer number & wearing the loudest, brightest of colors, we will be recognized. One of Southern AZ Chapter's goals this year is to petition the City of Tucson for the month of May (Motorcycle Awareness Month) locally. The proclamation to be adopted here locally reflecting the work we have already accomplished with our state. May is a great month for so many things but especially promoting safety and awareness,

Congratulations to all that attended the ASMI Accident Scene Management Inc. in Phoenix this past Feb. 11th & 12th. We had two unique things happen, first and foremost was to have Vicki RobertsSanfelipo here to share her talents and knowledge with us. Vicki is the one who created and started ASMI from the ground up and it’s a chance of a lifetime to pick up what she was putting down. Secondly a unprecedented first time for a “advanced” ASMI #300 class has been available here in Az. Now our State Safety Officer Jean Cooper will have the privilege of continuing this great course here. I can never say enough about these classes, they do save lives. Keeping the shiny side up…

Yavapai Chapter

No snow in January, but old man winter is back in the Prescott area. Cold temperatures did not deter the Yavapai Chapter faithful from turning out for meeting held on the 12th. Before I get started on what is going in our chapter, I want to thank Linda “Gabby” Kocar for filling in for me last month. 2012 is going to be a busy and productive year. We have a St. Patrick Day Run and membership drive scheduled for March 17th. The ride starts at the Jackass Bar and Grill in Prescott Valley (sign begins at 9:00 AM, with kickstands up at 10:15), then off the Drunken Lass for free biscuits and gravy. After our bellies are full, we will be heading to the Burro Inn in Wilhoit with a ride on the famous Spars (rivaled only by the ride to Jerome). Our final stop will be the Gurley Street Sports Pub in Prescott for live music, a big raffle, fashion show, bike show, and lots of vendors. It is only $5.00 per person and we are hoping to kick off the Spring by adding new members while having a great ride in the beautiful countryside around “Preskitt” (how locals pronounce Prescott). Thanks go out to 44Dan for his pack riding safe-

ty tips at the meeting.

Beginning on March 23rd we will begin bike afternoons at the Drunken Lass from the 3:00 to 7:00 PM. This should be a great way to get together with fellow riders and a great start to your weekend. So tell your boss you have worked hard all week, and head over for cold one and listen to Longhair James spin some tunes and raise money for the cause. Our May 19th Run to the Hills event in Jerome is shaping up nicely. We will be selling run pins early this year and the cool part of that is, just show your run pin at the gate and you are in. The event will be run old school style, in other words, bring your own everything. This is a 21 and over event, so you can bring grandpa, but not the grandkids. Grandpa will enjoy the live classic rock, the bike show (I am sure there will be a panhead, knuckehead or vintage bike or two), the treasure hunt, and people games (in case he is no longer able to do the bike games). If none of those suit his fancy, I think he will enjoy the wet t-shirt contest. The cost is 10.00 per person, and that includes camping (first come, first serve). I will have more information on this event next month. I have a few unpaid service announcements. Deb Butita motorcycle activist extraordinaire who is active in ABATE and the MRF brought up that individuals to donate to the award given to the Young motorcycle activist of the year won by Waldo’s daughter, Charity last year (a tax deduction to boot). Our chapter voted to donate $100.00 to this year’s fund. For more information on donating, go to the MRF website (http://www.mrfae.org/yas.php). Our own Paul Pendergast (State V.P.) announced that volunteers are needed to help out at Arizona Bike this year at the booth we are sharing with the Sunchasers at Westworld in Scottsdale (3/28-4/3). This is a great opportunity to get out our message and recruit new members. The American Legion in Prescott is having a run on 5/19 and funds from the run will be donated to help disabled Vets. If you go on this run to support our Vets, remember it is a short ride from Prescott to Jerome, where if I am not mistaking there will be a lot of people having a good time at the Gold King Mine. We would like to welcome a new business member, Mountain Pass located in Prescott Valley 3044 N. Robert Road next to the Circle K. Mike and Cheryl have a great selection of biker leathers, knives and stun guns. All you need to look good and protect yourself in more ways than one. Until next time, ride free, but aware. The PAC Rant

We could do like Government does. That is, find a small problem, make it big then tell everyone that their livelihood and wellbeing are threatened, and only we can save them. (Principles of Propaganda; 101) But that isn’t our style and doesn’t work on intelligent people anyway. (Hopefully)

Jim Page State PAC Officer

Guys, I really don’t have a lot for ya that I haven’t said before or that isn’t covered in Carole’s Lobbyist’s report. I was in a conversation about membership last night, (Guys we really need to get more members.) But it was said to me that the reason that we don’t have many members is because we don’t have a threat. Oh there are threats to our lifestyle out there but they aren’t the big ones that get everybody up in arms.

Then I got home and there was a show on T.V. (No, not Dr. Who) it was called “Doomsday Preppers”. It got me to thinkin’ that that is really how I need to look at this. That we are the ones that are preparing and we need to be ready when the “excrement hits the ventilator”. Ok So I can do that, but it still doesn’t mean we have enough members. The bigger your group is the more chance you have in prevailing. So guys, the “Big one” is always looming. Get out there and sign someone up.

So I’m trying to figure out how to get more people involved. What Is ABATE?

ABATE Of Arizona, Inc. is a non-profit motorcycle rights organization that is dedicated to freedom of the road for all motorcyclists.

ABATE is a volunteer organization that fights discriminatory legislation aimed towards the motorcycling community. ABATE's position is that all motorcycle riders have the right to choose not only the machine that they ride, but also the riding gear that they choose to wear or not to wear, (i.e. leathers, gloves, boots and helmets.) ABATE promotes rider education for all motorcycle riders and motorcycle awareness for all automobile drivers. ABATE needs the support of all motorcyclists.

Good Morning America. As motorcyclist, we all enjoy the freedom of the road, we enjoy the scenery and the camaraderie that happens when groups of us get together for a Spring ride. With all that joy comes certain unavoidable risk; things such as pot holes can take you down and ruin your entire day. Animals like deer seemly come out of nowhere and if you hit one, the results can be devastating. Then there are the dead animal carcasses all over the roads. Skunks, Opossums, squirrels' and birds you name the critter and you will more than likely pass one rotting away on the highway.

Then there is the seasonal hazards like fresh gravel, leftover cinders or sand that can take the control of your motorcycle away from you and put it directly in the hands of God. If something does happen while your out on the road, isn't it nice to have a safe place to pull off and assess the damage or situation ? Absolutely ! How about rain and severe weather? There is nothing better than a nice dry overpass to pull under during a driving rain storm. Believe me, if you have been riding for any length of time you can and will get caught in the rain. The colder and wetter you get the more you will be searching for that overpass.

The situations I've described are temporary. The potholes will eventually get filled , The animals will get scraped up or just rot away, the rain will cease and hopefully wash the sand and gravel away. As bad as any of those situations may be, there is a new hazard, so awful , so dangerous and so potentially deadly that I had to devote an entire column to it in hopes that someone reading this will take heed and avoid this particular stretch of road when ever possible. Worst of all perhaps... the whole thing is entirely man made.

The hazard I'm writing about has really sparked a lot of conversation and concern among fellow motorcyclist around this area. Who's responsible for this highway motorcycle meat slicer and what kind of demented person would ever consider installing such an evil devise? We can thank the Obama administration and their artificial job creation act for it. Along I-275 in Kentucky, the highway dept. has installed a barrier between the lanes that spells dismemberment at

PAGE 9

best and death at the worse for any motorcyclist that may be forced to have to ditch their motorcycle in a hurry.

There was no thought given to the safety of any motorcyclist when they elected to install this insidious death trap under the guise of highway safety. The metal fence support 4 one inch wire cables that have the potential to tear your leg off should you be unlucky enough to run into one of them at almost any rate of speed. If that's not bad enough, the post alternate, one on the inside and the other on the outside. These If you have crash bars on your motorcycle there is a very real chance to get snagged by one of the aforementioned fence post. Just to add insult to injury, the pull off lane is very, very narrow and puts you just about in the path of any vehicle traveling in the high speed lane. I'm sure the current administration had the best intentions when they installed these motorcycle death traps but the jobs they created are finished . Now we, the American riding public are stuck with the terrible results. I've seen what happens when cars and trucks blast through these barricades, they snap off those metal fence post and create jagged metal spikes all the while , those one inch metal cables wave freely in the breeze.

I just keep on praying to the Good Lord Above that no one loses their life or limbs to this highway monstrosity. There are times when you may have to lay your bike down. Motorcycle rider training teaches you these avoidance techniques. You never know when a tire might blow or something falls off a trailer in front of you. Pieces of rubber from blown tractor trailer tires is another perfect example..... those are split second decisions that don't give you a lot of room for errors and in Kentucky, your chances for survival just got a lot slimmer on I-275. Please watch out for the hazards if you find yourselves traveling along the I-275 corridor in Kentucky or Ohio. Thank God Indiana still has the good sense to not install this type of barrier, the American motorcycle riders thank you for not doing something stupid in the name of safety... Peace...................... Until Next Month...... Hamster

TOO BROKE for STURGIS 2012 MORMON LAKE, ARIZONA JULY 27-29

We are happy to report that A.B.A.T.E of Arizona’s “Too Broke for Sturgis” is going to be our best party yet. We appreciate all the love and kindness that we have received. I personally am humbled and overwhelmed by all of you. Not only has our own biker community come together, but the citizens of Mormon Lake, the staff of Forever Resorts (MLL), local L.E. and EMS have all embraced us with respect and caring and it will never be forgotten. Thank You.

Some of you reading this may not know what I am talking about. We had a terrible

domestic violence tragedy at TBFS 2011 that forced us to close our only yearly fund raiser on the first night. I have been writing this piece in my head since July and decided that I didn’t want to go into the details of that awful night, but only say that for many of us, it was one of the worst times of our lives. That being said, we also don’t want rumors to cause hard feeling towards any person or group. Therefore I ask that if anyone needs to discuss anything TBFS related to contact me or any of the 20 TBFS committee members directly. jrosen302@cox.net

February Safety Report

streets. There will be lots of riders coming to Arizona for Bike Week or just passing through to other places. We still have to ride defensively, keeping vigilant to protect our safety.

Jean Cooper State Safety Officer

The nearly perfect riding weather is upon us. Even though there are around 160,000 motorcycles registered in Arizona, there are many more on the

Last weekend several of us, 5 of us from ABATE, attended the first Advanced Accident Scene Management Course in Arizona. Vicki Sanfelipo, who developed the program, came to teach us the next level of skills to use at a crash scene to promote greater survival and prevent greater injury. It was a great class. I am thrilled to tell you all that I am now certified to teach the next level. I look forward to sharing the next level of skills

with as many people as I can.

I cannot say enough about distracted drivers!!! Every day I see nearly every driver going past me either talking on a phone or texting. They drive slow, fast, slow as they try to navigate the vehicle while paying attention to the little device. I even see bikers doing the same thing. What are they thinking?? Oh, wait, they aren’t. Protect yourself, stay away from them. The best defense is to keep your riding skills up to date. There are several places to renew your skills and in some cases your insurance company will offer a discount for proof of course completion. Challenge yourself to a skills course. You’d be surprised how much concentration it takes to follow the course and do it right, even after years of cruising down

the highway.

While you’re thinking about riding skills and safety, think about making yourself visible…. Picture the stereotypical biker in black leather jacket, black leather pants or chaps and black gloves riding a black motorcycle. On a sunny day in Arizona, that biker is hard to miss. Now picture the same biker on the same black motorcycle with the same black clothes on at night. The biker is hard to see. Make yourself visible. Wear reflective clothing. Ride with your lights on. Keep your bike is good repair. Remember motorcycle boots are not made for walking.

Like I said we have nearly perfect riding weather. Get out and enjoy! And be Safe!

MASTERLINK MARCH 2012 12NR02 - MRF News Release - US House Committee Passes HR 3199 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 07 February 2012

Contact:Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Ralations and Public Affairs US House Committee Passes HR 3199

Tuesday, Feburary 7th, the United States House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space and Technology passed HR 3199 - a bill that would require a comprehensive study of the scientific and technical research on the implications of fuel with more than 10 percent ethanol. Essentially, this bill would slow down the fast tracking of the fuel blend that is 15 percent or more ethanol. The Administration made it legal at the end of 2010 for fuel suppliers to sell the blend.

In an Opinon Editorial to the Hill newspaper, Rep. Sensenbrenner (WI) had this to say, "Many claims by E15's supporters are questionable. For instance, ethanol's proponents argue that ethanol is cheaper. But this claim ignores the fact that E15 lowers fuel efficiency. Since ethanol's energy content is just 70 percent of the energy content of gasoline, American drivers will be forced to make more trips to the pump, largely negating any savings from E15." Sensenbrenner added, "As bad as E15 is for our cars, it is downright dangerous in small gasoline-based engines like those in our lawnmowers, boats and ATVs. E15 in a boat engine is

News from the MRF

like metal in a microwave. The United States Coast Guard warned that E15 in marine engines increases the risk of fires and explosions. And, "The EPA dismisses these concerns — from stakeholders within the government, no less — because these engines are not included in EPA's E15 waiver, but EPA is willfully ignoring inevitable issues with misfueling and lack of availability of fuel with lower ethanol content. At a Science Committee hearing last year, we examined the EPA's E15 decision, and witnesses testified that the agency cannot prevent misfueling." We at the MRF are all for reducing our dependence on foreign oil and keeping the planet healthy, but the facts are not all in when it comes to the 15 percent blend when used in a motorcycle engine. In fact, the Motorcycle Industry Council has said that the blend could be harmful to motorcycles. The EPA went so far as to say that motorcycles are prohibited from using the new blend altogether. Until further comprehensive study, such as required by this legislation, is conducted we must issue caution when using the new blend.

The MRF will keep you updated on this and every other issue effecting motorcyclists from Washington DC.

12NR03 - MRF News Release - The BEAST is Coming to Atlanta! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 10 February 2012

Contact: Teri Stobbs Ricci, MRF

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 3% of Roadway crashes involve motorcyclists but 17% of roadway fatalities were motorcyclists. Statistically, another motorcyclist is the first to be on the scene of a motorcycle crash. Conference Assistant

The BEAST is Coming to Atlanta!

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s (MRF) Annual BEAST of the East Conference will take place in Atlanta, April 13-15, 2012, hosted by ABATE of Georgia. MRF conferences are designed to educate and motivate those in the motorcyclists' rights community. In addition to being a fantastic learning opportunity, these events are a great chance to meet other people from all over the country who are as passionate about motorcyclists' rights as you are. Workshops and seminars this year will be presented by motorcyclists’ rights activists from Georgia, Washington DC, Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin, and we expect participants from all over the country as well. You can register in advance for BEAST, as well as download and/or view the BEAST poster, registration information, and tentative agenda at www.mrf.org/events.php. When making your travel arrangements, PLEASE NOTE that workshops for BEAST this year will begin at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 13. The agenda covers a wide range of topics, and naturally, we will update participants on all federal motorcycling issues and the MRF’s 2012 legislative agenda. We will have informative seminars regarding motorcycle awareness and education, women in motorcycling, a variety of legal perspectives, and the U.S. Constitution. In addition, we will have training seminars on how a federal bill becomes a law, develop-

PAGE 13 ing relationships with legislators and agencies, passing bills, and “Share the Road” programs; as well as special meetings for MRF Reps and for motorcycle club members. One of the highlights of the conference will be a general session on “The History of the MRF.” Some of the most valuable knowledge you will gain will be in the “meetings after the meetings,” which take place in the hallways, hospitality suite, and banquet. The networking opportunities are phenomenal at MRF conferences. We do have an auction at the banquet to raise money for the MRF (it costs approximately $1000/day to keep our office open in DC, even with an entire volunteer Board of Directors). Auction item donations are greatly appreciated, and will be collected on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at the conference hotel.

Conference participants are required to make their own hotel reservations. We have negotiated a special room rate of $89 per night at the Westin Atlanta Airport, which includes free parking and special meal rates in the hotel restaurant. Attendees who are not staying at the Westin will be required to pay $10/day to park in their lot. Rooms must be reserved by March 15, and you must mention the Motorcycle Riders Foundation BEAST of the East Conference, to get the special room rate. The BEAST conference poster provides all of the hotel registration information. I hope to see you at the MRF’s BEAST of the East conference in Atlanta!

MASTERLINK MARCH 2012 TIVE RIDING APPAREL “Ride to be seen, but ride like you’re invisible” is sound advice for all motorcyclists, and wearing bright colored reflective riding gear is one way to be more conspicuous in traffic and avoid getting ran over by distracted and inattentive drivers, but France will soon be enforcing legal measures to ensure that motorcyclists are seen.

French officials apparently take motorcycle visibility so seriously, they’re making it Illegal not to be noticed. According to a new rule in their highway code that takes effect January 1, 2013, riders and passengers aboard any bike bigger than 125cc will each be required to wear at least 150 square centimeters of reflective fabric on their upper bodies -- and according to British motorcycle activists Riders Are Voters, France already requires reflective stickers on helmets.

FIRST MOTORCYCLE-ONLY GAS STATION OPENS ABROAD More motorcycles are sold in Indonesia in a year than exist in the entire United States of America! According to the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), 7.4 million motorcycles were sold there in 2010, and by comparison there were 7.9 million motorcycles registered in the U.S. There are significantly more motorcycles than cars operating in this denselypopulated region, and of 70.71 million vehicles in Indonesia, 52.43 million are two-wheel machines, which has led to the opening of the world’s first motorcycle-only gas stations.

Coast to Coast (continued)

These "Shell Motor Express" stations are designed exclusively for motorcycles and it was the Indonesian government’s idea to provide “comfort, safety and time-efficiency” for the majority of the country’s commuters. Shell Indonesia says: "This motorcycle gas station is a pilot project developed in response to the Government’s idea to provide a dedicated refueling service for motorcycles. Shell Motor Express is purposely built to serve motorcycles which are the largest and fastest growing segment in the domestic motor vehicle industry.”

WEIRD NEWS: DIRTY SECRET ABOUT GAS PUMPS Gas pump handles top a recent study of filthy surfaces, so just when you thought filling up couldn’t hurt any more, medical researchers have announced another reason to avoid touching the gas pump: GERMS! Gas pump handles turned out to be the filthiest surface that Americans encounter on the way to work, according to a study released on October 25, 2011 by Kimberly-Clark Professional, a unit of personal hygiene giant Kimberly-Clark Corp. A team of hygienists swabbed hundreds of surfaces around six U.S. cities to see what everyday objects are breeding grounds for the worst bacteria and viruses.

The top offenders, following gas pumps, were handles on public mailboxes, escalator rails and ATM buttons. Closely following on the filthiest list were parking meters and kiosks, cross-

walk buttons and buttons on vending machines in shopping malls.

"It comes down to the fact that nobody cleans the things that you're going to touch on a daily basis," said Dr. Kelly Arehart, program leader of KimberlyClark's Healthy Workplace Project.

MOTORCYCLISTS FINED FOR WEARING DOT-APPROVED HELMETS In a strange twist, motorcycle riders in Mumbai, India are being hassled by law enforcement for wearing DOTapproved helmets because, in an effort to curb the use of cheap helmets, the police commissioner recently issued an order stating that all motorcyclists must wear helmets with an ISI marking to certify that they are approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

ATTENTION - ALL RIDERS: =======================

It has come to our attention that business establishments in Arizona may still be discriminating against motorcyclists. Please carry copies of this form with you at all times. Discrimination can range from a sign stating "No Colors" or "No Motorcycle Parking" or "No Motorcycle Attire" etc., to simply being asked to leave a place of business, just because you are on a motorcycle or because of your riding apparel. If anything like this happens to you, PLEASE fill out this form in its entirety and send it to the address noted. Your lobbyists cannot get sponsorship for "equal access" legislation, without evidence of this type of discrimination. Documentation of Discrimination DATE: ______________

What Does it Take?

motorcyclist killed. It is very sad, another brother or sister lost. What does it take to prevent hearing these very words every day?

Casey Yates State Secretary

You hear it almost every day, another

Many have said we should do this and that but how many really put their money where there mouth is and join an MRO or vote or, there are so many ways to get involved in keeping our rights and keep our riders safe.

I believe unity between MRO’s and the general public would help. Why can’t we support each other, work together for the

greater benefit? Is it some hidden law that MRO’s can’t work together?

I was reading some other papers and noticed that we are fighting for a lot of the same causes, and even our members are members of another MRO’s. It is a little step, but we need a big giant leap.

You can’t fight for motorcycle rights if you don’t know what you are fighting for.

We are fighting for our safety! In the last week alone we have had 5 motorcycle accidents, 3 of them fatal. The larger the article if you ARE wearing a helmet. Most of these accidents are on the freeway but just as many occur on surface streets. We can’t fight for our cause if we can’t

get the word out. PEOPLE, the more people we make aware, the voice we have is louder. At ABATE, our cause IS motorcycle rights, including education. Motorcycle Day at the Dome is our day to talk to our legislators and make a huge impact by our presence. WE MUST be heard!, If our voices are as loud as the pipes on a bike, we can make a difference. MDATD, will be over by the time this article prints, it is my hope that MDATD is a huge success and we gain a few more members wanting to be a part of our cause. Casey Yates
