By Johnny D ALMA MC ACMC Designated Lobbyist ABATE State PAC Officer

Hello again my freedom loving readers. As we all heard, the legislature is in session once again. They are bound and determined to make this session as short, or shorter than the 2015 session. This year we tried a new tactic, we had about fifty bikers at the Capitol on opening day. I prepared a flier with information on two bills that we had to fight. The first was SB 1054, a bill that would have made it a crime to take video of police officers within twenty feet of them while they were engaged in any type of official actions. I first thought “whose responsibility is it to bring the tape measure?” We needed to kill that one. Senator Kavanagh, the bill’s sponsor, pulled it a couple of weeks after the public outcry became deafening.

The second bill was HB 2052. It is the same one that Representative Friese from Tucson tried to push last year. Basically a fee for not being required to wear a helmet or a five hundred dollar fine if you are caught without one. That bill is going nowhere as it did last year. David Gowan, the Speaker of the House, does not like helmet laws and respects the motorcycle community’s desire to decide for ourselves. Outside of that most of the other motorcycle related bills are only of interest to specific people like motorcycle dealership owners and Slingshot owners. I was interviewed by a reporter from Cronkite news about the helmet bill. She also interviewed Randall Friese and Mick Degn. The article can be found here: Cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2016/02/02/Arizonans -go-head-to-head-on-motorcycle-safety-laws

She and I spoke for nearly forty five minutes and I had about three sentences in the article. The fatality statistics she was given need to be vetted and I will soon do just that. The vocal minority Rep. Friese cites are the owners and riders of the 192,000 registered motorcycles in Arizona. While we are not the majority of registered voters, we are a sizable interest group. We are actually the single largest interest group in the state. If only we could get every rider engaged politically, we could rule the legislature. Owning a motorcycle means you are of voting age. My dream is to one day be at the level of Cathi Herrod who can summon thou-

sands of calls and emails on a bill within hours. If our group of lobbyist and activists could walk in and honestly state that we represent 192,000 voters, they would shake in their boots when we set foot in sight of the Copper Dome.

On another note, the AMSAC council is short two members as of this writing. In2015 they only had one meeting instead of the four they are mandated by law to have each year. I spoke with Mari Hembeck at the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. She said that Alberto Gutier, the GOHS director, was considering putting an end to AMSAC. I had learned that the law that created it, as well as the funding from motorcycle registrations, was set to expire in June of this year. As I was working with Deb Butitta and Karen Fann on extending the sunset of these, we found that Skypilot and Bobbi Hartmann had spoken with Senator Worsley and he dropped a bill to extend the sunset until 2024. I have contacted Jim Butsback and he is actively searching for ABATE members to apply for the positions. You can go to bcgovernor.gov and apply yourself if you want. All you need is a resume including your activities in the motorcycle community. We desperately need someone from our group on that board. Please step up if you can. There will be more news next month. Until then enjoy the early summer we are experiencing. Stay hydrated while riding in the warm sunshine. Live to ride, ride to live.

MASTERLINK MARCH  2016

President’s Report

comes to looking twice to see motorcycles. Please ride carefully and remember that you may be invisible to those in the cages around you.

As we enter the month of March, the calendar seems to fill up with rides and events of all types. It can sometimes be a challenge to make all the rounds of the events you wish to support. There is Arizona Bike Week coming up and Too Broke for Sturgis will be here before we know it.

By Jim Butsback

As I sit writing this it is the middle of February and the weather here in Arizona has changed drastically from last month. The highs here in Tucson are near the record highs and the lows are in the Fifties. This is making for great riding weather but it also is the weather that attracts all the “winter visitors” and why all the college kids decide to attend school here. These groups of drivers are not always the most attentive when it

This year Motorcycle Day at the Dome will be held on April 18th and be more like the old Freedom Rally. NOW is the time to start contacting you state legislators to make appointments and let them know that the event is taking place and you would like to meet with them. It is important that you let those sponsoring events that you attend know that you are an ABATE member and that you are supporting their event. Always try and wear ABATE gear so others see you are a member. This helps not only our image as an organization that we are supporting the motorcycling community but also helps in recruiting new members. Folks tend to want to join organizations that are active and support the same things that they do.

I was recently talking to a group of riders at one of the events that I attend and even though many of them were ABATE members they expressed to me that they did not know who the various officers were and especially had no knowledge of anyone outside of their own chapter. I discussed this with the State Officers and it was decided that we would start a series in the Masterlink of short bios of the various officers and board members from around the state. This will help folks put a face to a name and learn more about our brothers & sisters in the other chapters. This month we will start with State Officers and will follow with various board members and chapter officers in the months to come. Arizona being such a large state geographically it makes it hard for us to attend other chapter’s event and to develop strong relationships with others from around the state. Hopefully this will be on step and the road to correct that. May is “Motorcycle Awareness Month” nationally and once again we will be working with the Governor’s office to have Governor Ducey issue a proclamation officially designating May as “Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month” in Arizona. I know most of our

PAGE 3

chapters are planning some kind of event or project to support this in their local areas. Please support all efforts to get the message out to the general public to “Check Twice for Motorcycles” and this may be a good idea to take to your local city or town council to get them on board to promote motorcycle safety and awareness.

I would like to remind everyone that we are still actively seeking a candidate for Designated Lobbyist for ABATE of Arizona. If anyone thinks they may be interested in learning more about this position please contact me via email at president@abateofaz.org and I will be happy to discuss this and put you in touch with those can give you more details on what is involved.

I would also like to thank all of the Business Members that you see listed and their business card ads throughout the Masterlink. Without the support of these community members we would be hard pressed to do what we do. I strongly encourage all ABATE members to support those businesses that support us.

Until next time! Ride Free! Jim

East Valley Chapter

Here is my husband Nolan Steed’s Valentine’s present. I love you honey. I am taking his turn at writing the chapter report. AWWW ain’t love grand. I know that it will be long past by the time everyone reads this but I hope everyone had a Happy Valentine’s day. However you may or may not have chosen to celebrate it. Let’s see what East Valley Chapter was up to this month.

We had our first Chapter meeting with our new officers in place. It was interesting to see the differences, just little things. I applaud and appreciate all the old and new officers. I thought Jim did a down right awesome job he seemed pretty comfy in his spot. We got to see Nolan give his first ever Safety officer report hitting on checking your brake lines.

We had a few guests at the meeting so a warm hello to Margie and Hannah.

It pays to come to the meetings #27 Harlen D could have been $162 richer. Our lovely treasurer Deb won the 50/50 and donated her winnings back.

Redbone and the Bonettes are looking forward to serving at The Church without Walls on Feb 27th. Also the annual Spaghetti Feed has been set for June 4th 2016. Mark your Calendars.

We made a year commitment to have a booth at Motorcycles on Main will have the spot C6 which is in front of the bank and the jewelry store. So make sure ya come on out and see us. It is always a blast. Thanks to everyone who came out even though we were moved over to MacDonald instead of Main Street for the February event.

At this point all I can say is that the first Hard Ass Run Committee meeting has been held. MUHAHAHA.

So once again until we meet again, be safe out there.

Enjoy the ride and as always keep it rubber side down. Here’s to Wind Knots in my Hair, Dawn P Steed East Valley Chapter & State Secretary

Hello Brothers and Sisters.

We finally got a break in the weather, and its been dry and warm. Well, warmer than it has been. It's been great for riding, and I hope you have had a chance to take advantage of this time. Up here in the High Country, we have

been getting a jump on things with the preparation for "Wild in the Weeds". This is at Punkin Center, the weekend of May 6th-8th. Be looking out for our flyers with all the details. We are working on some improvements of an already fantastic event. Mark this weekend on your calendars, because you are in for a great time.

We are still looking for more vendors so if you are interested please contact CCrider at 928-478-1955. We have live music for both Fri. and Sat. nights. Free camping, Rv parking and Motel rooms are available. Motel rooms are going fast, so get your reservations in soon. For reservations call 877-479-2229. We have plenty of activities planned for your enjoyment. HCC holds our meetings on the 3rd Sun. of every month. Everyone is invited to join us 10am at the Moose Lodge 852 in Star Valley. Breakfast at 8:30am at the Spur. Hope to see you there. Keep wind in your face, sun on your back, fuel in the tank, and rubber on the road. Wayne Slocum Coordinator, H.C.C. ABATE

Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter

As the Phoenix/Shadow Mountain meeting was called to order, it was noted that there was a good turnout in spite of it being Valentine’s Day. This was mostly due to the State meeting that was held directly afterwards. Many State officers were in attendance and Jim Silk invited the Phx/SM Chapter to the next East Valley meeting to be held on February 28th at 11:00 A.M. at the Eagle’s Lodge (Dobson/Broadway). A review of new and old business, including open discussion, was read in lieu of a full reading of the minutes by Secretary. Vic graciously offered a custom guitar for the Chapter to raffle off for the Too Broke for Bike Week event to be held in April and the motion was accepted. Safety reminds you to inspect your motorcycle and perform your T-clocks – cleaning, lubricating, lights, tires, chassis, oil, and kickstands. PAC reported that the helmet law is dead and that the AMSAC appropriation of $1.00 registration fee has been approved for motorcycle safety. Our Run Coordinator discussed several upcoming events; look for all events on the Phoenix - Shadow Mountain, ABATE of Arizona Facebook page. Merchandise asked for chapter members to bring Chapter shirt ideas to next meeting in March. The BOD Representative announced that the Board of Directors are traveling to Yuma to hold the next BoD meeting on April 13th. We look forward to seeing you for the March 6th monthly meeting!

MASTERLINK MARCH  2016

Southern Arizona Chapter

The January meeting, as always, was held at the Kettle Restaurant. This month it was a little confused because the Kettle once again double booked the meeting room. It seems that a group from the local political party has more pull than we do, go figure. The meeting started at 9:01AM with the Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer for those in harm’s way and fallen Brothers and Sisters. The meeting was held in the restaurant do to the meeting room screw up. Officers Present were Coordinator Jim Butsback, Vice – Coordinator “Radar” Huntington, Treasurer Dawn Detelj, BOD/Merchandise-Sean Pinder, Safety Robert “Grease” Templeton and PAC Officer Annisa “Dragonfly” Huntington and Run Officer Bob “Gizmo” Welton.

The minutes of last month’s meeting were approved as written, and the Treasurer’s report was accepted.

Our membership has been holding strong, we have picked up a couple new business members Pappy’s Diner & the Territorial so please support our business members. Total membership for the Chapter is at 139. Everyone keep up the good work, the more members we have the more we can accomplish. Bob said he will be signing up a new Club member by next meeting, good work Bob. We are asking everyone to feel free to take photos and write up a little article on any of the events that you attend so we can submit it to the editor of the Masterlink. Eric will use what he can if there is room; these stories help show what we do in the motorcycle community and everyone likes to see if they made the paper.

Bob is still working on an event for February. We will be sponsoring a Poker Run to support the Arizona Fisher House at the VA Hospital. It will begin and end at the Bashful Bandit, one of our business members. There will be stops at Big Sky, the VFW, Renegade Classic and the American Legion with the final event back to the Bashful Bandit. It will be on February 20th with registration from 911. We will need everyone to come out and support this event. We will also be needing volunteers to work, and raffle prizes so if you can help us obtain some it would be most appreciated. We are putting this together rather quickly in order to show support for this worthy cause. The VA will be holding the dedication for the new Arizona Fisher House on Thursday February 18th. As always please keep promoting our Business Memberships to those you do business with. We have been doing Great on this so let’s keep up the good work. Anyone who is not getting emails from the Chapter, please send your email address to abateofazsac@yahoo.com. There is also a group page at Yahoo Groups. All Chapter members can sign

up there and receive all emails from the Chapter through the group.

It is abateofazsac@yahoogroups.com. We are trying to save the Chapter some money by cutting down on postage. Yuma Chapter

The Yuma chapter met on February 9th at 6:00 pm at the Kountry Kitchen restaurant to conduct our monthly business meeting. The meeting was called to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, guests were introduced, and normal reports were addressed.

The ABATE Board of Directors will be meeting in Yuma on the April 3rd at the Sons of Hell MC clubhouse. The Yuma chapter is also planning for our annual March ABATE Membership Run. The membership run will be held on March 26th. See the run flyer in this month’s Masterlink. Our ABATE members were tasked with various duties and responsibilities to make this run happen. We hope to have a large turnout this year.

Over the past month Yuma ABATE chapter members attended the GLBO Annual Biker BBQ, a CMA social, the Dirty Dawg MC 3rd anniversary party, and The Sons of Hell MC swap meet and their Mardi Gras party.

The new Hands Free Driving Law is now in full swing in the City of Yuma and the police are now citing drivers who are texting, talking, or holding cell phones in their hands. The law also includes people eating and putting make-up on while driving. This is a good law to help protect the motoring public.

The Yuma ABATE chapter meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm. The next meeting will be held on March 8th, 2016 at the Kountry Kitchen Café located at 11242 S. Foothills Blvd, Yuma, AZ. We would love to see you there.

RIDING “OFF THE GRID” -- HOW TO ESCAPE GPS TRACKING ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE

Freedom of the Road isn’t that free these days. “We often talk about what you can do to protect your privacy, but more often than not we accept the technology given to us by large corporations with government influence,” writes Gil Mellen, ABATE of California’s rep to the Southern California Confederation of Clubs (SCCOC), “And with that ease our phones store more than just our private information, they are a collection source for who we are, what we do and where we go 24/7.”

Turning your phone off or on airplane mode doesn’t cut it either, he explains. In order to truly be undetectable to ANYONE you must use a first line of defense on your phone, such as Silent Pocket. By employing a Silent Pocket “Faraday cage” (conductive material surrounding a piece of equipment to exclude electrostatic and electromagnetic influences) you can block all wireless signals to and from your mobile device.

Once placed inside the stylish leather case, your device is completely sealed -- No GPS tracking, NO cellular, NO wifi, NO Bluetooth, and NO RFID scanning or NFC in all frequencies. Additionally, Silent Pocket cases protect your financial information from credit card skimming and scanning.

BIKER ATTIRE ALLOWED IN NEW MEXICO COURTROOMS

Declaring “A great victory for our community,” Annette Torrez, chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) and National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, announced that; We received the following message from Chief Justice Judge Nash concerning motorcycle vests in District Courthouse, "Please be informed that the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department will NOT be requiring members of your organization to turn their vests inside out upon entry into the Second Judicial District Courthouse and its' Courtrooms in the

future."

The NMMRO and the NNMCOC (Northern New Mexico Confederation of Clubs) sent Judge Nash a letter regarding an issue in which Bernalillo Sheriff Officers were asking the Guardians of the Children to remove their vests and turn them inside out so none of the patches were visible. “These vests and patches are what identify them to the abused children who they are there to support in court under difficult circumstance as these children have to face their perpetrators or have to sometimes testify,” explained Torrez. “While we can all benefit from this victory, it is the abused children from our community who will benefit most, as now members of motorcycle community can continue to support and accompany them in court. Your voices were heard as we united in support.”

Nash’s message specifically denotes “members of your organization" which is why “it is so important we as motorcyclists join and support the NMMRO, an organization that stands and fights for your rights, freedoms and liberties,” said Torrez, adding; “Thank you to Judge Nash for doing the right thing as we believe our 1st Amendment was being violated. We must also remember that we must be respectful at all times in our courthouse, we must be on our best behavior so that we may continue to wear our patches and motorcycle related attire in the courthouse. I want to thank the Guardians of the Children for bringing this to our attention. Thank you to Double D from The Motorcycle Profiling Project and Attorney Dan Sorey for their support and advice in

MANIFESTO ON THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY AND FREEDOM OF THE ROAD

“I read your recent (NCOM Biker Newsbytes) report and the piece about the NCOM board requesting input on motorcycle issues to discuss at the upcoming NCOM Convention,” writes Keith “Bandit” Ball of Bikernet.com and former editor of Easyriders magazine. “I have a major bitch and a project that could save the custom motorcycle aftermarket and place freedom at the forefront of our nation once more.”

WHEN YOU CAN’T GIVE UP, WRITE -- A Brief Manifesto; “Sounds ominous but it’s not, then again it is a tough alteration to current government thinking. And I believe our industry could be at the forefront.

Why can’t we prove that Freedom always needs to be a consideration? Why can’t we prove that all the custom motorcycles in the country will never have any significant impact on the environment and agencies need to leave us alone?

If we were successful, this could place Freedom at the forefront in many applications from hot rods, to go carts, to speed boats.”

As evidence of governmental regulation usurping personal rights, Ball (Bandit@Bikernet.com) submitted the following news release on behalf of SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) entitled “EPA Seeks to Prohibit Conversion of Vehicles into Racecars”:

“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use into racecars and make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal. The proposed regulation was contained within a non-related proposed regulation entitled ‘Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and HeavyDuty Engines and Vehicles - Phase 2’.

The regulation would impact all vehicle types, including the sports cars, sedans and hatchbacks commonly converted strictly for use at the track. While the Clean Air Act prohibits certain modifications to motor vehicles, it is clear that vehicles built or modified for racing, and not used on the streets, are not the ‘motor vehicles’ that Congress intended to regulate.

‘This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,’ said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting.

Working with other affected organizations, including those representing legions of professional and hobbyist racers and fans, SEMA will continue to oppose the regulation through the administrative process and will seek congressional support and judicial intervention as necessary. The EPA has indicated it expects to publish final regulations by July 2016.”

BILL IN WASHINGTON WOULD ALLOW MOTORCYCLES ON SHOULDERS IN TRAFFIC

Washington State might give motorcyclists preferential treatment on some highways during traffic jams under a bill that has the support of the state Senate. The measure would give motorcyclists permission to drive on the far left shoulders of divided highways when traffic is moving under 25 miles an hour.

Coast to Coast (continued)

“It really is about relieving congestion,” said State Senator Tim Sheldon (D-Mason County), the bill’s sponsor. He tried passing a bill last year that would have allowed what’s known as “lane splitting,” allowing bikers to ride between cars stopped in traffic, but that bill failed.

Sen. Sheldon told CBS King5 News in Olympia that his proposal would alleviate traffic and make highways safer for motorcycle riders in heavy traffic. ”When congestion basically stops traffic, a motorcyclist… they’re vulnerable to over-heating as well as being rear-ended.” KANSAS HOUSE SPEAKER GIVES HORSEPOWER TO 3-WHEELER REFORM BILL

A House committee in Kansas kicked the tires of a bill creating a special driving examination and license for people who ride increasingly popular three-wheeled motorcycles. Under current Kansas law, individuals are required to take a test on a two-wheeled motorcycle even if they own and plan to ride a machine with three wheels. House Bill 2436 would establish a special class of motorcycle licensing that aligns the examination with the type of vehicle to be driven.

Three-wheel licenses issued under the proposed law would forbid the person from legally riding a two-wheeled motorcycle, but anyone passing the two-wheel test could ride both motorcycle variations.

House Speaker Ray Merrick (R-Stilwell) urged the House’s Vision 2020 Committee to endorse the “friendly, common-sense update to Kansas statutes.”

“Considering the vast differences in the physical requirements between two- and threewheeled motorcycles,” Merrick said, “it is reasonable that a person who can only ride a three-wheeled motorcycle should be allowed to take their license training and test on the type of motorcycle they will be using.”

Brian Thompson, a lobbyist with ABATE of Kansas, said the reform proposed by the House bill would benefit young and old riders alike. “Those with less skills would be able to

feel the independence and freedom of the road if they desire,” Thompson told the Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper.

NEW MOTORCYCLE HAZARD - TEENS WALKING WHILE DISTRACTED

Motorcycle riders have a lot to watch for when cruising through an urban environment such as a city or town. While the first focus may be other vehicles, a new study shows bikers should watch for teens crossing the road while distracted by their smartphone.

According to research released by Safe Kids Worldwide, with support from FedEx, distraction plays a role as 50% of teens admit they cross streets while using a mobile device, and an alarming 40% admit to actually being hit or nearly hit by a car, bike or motorcycle while walking.

Of the teens who have been hit or nearly hit report crossing the street while: 47% listening to music, 20% talking on the phone, and 18% were texting.

“Every hour of every day, a teen is hit or killed while walking,” said Kate Carr, President and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “Texting and walking or driving can be fatal. That's why we're asking everyone to put phones down when crossing the street.”

TEENAGER CAUTIONED AFTER SERIOUSLY INJURING MOTORCYCLIST

A 14-year-old boy was recently “cautioned” by police after causing “life-changing injuries” to a motorcyclist by tying a rope between two trees on a woodland path. The 17-year-old rider was rushed to the hospital with serious neck and wind-pipe injuries after hitting the rope while riding in woods near St Neots, Cambridgeshire, UK, and he spent seven weeks in the hospital including twoand-a-half in an induced coma.

The boy, who admitted responsibility under questioning by police, was issued a youth caution for causing grievous bodily harm without intent. He must also attend sessions with the Youth Offending Service.

Incorporating motorcycle riding into daily life improves various cognitive functions (particularly prefrontal cortex functions) and has positive effects on mental and emotional health such as stress reduction. Ensuring your health is where it needs to be to be able to ride is also important. Folks with heart disease or diabetes need to take special care of their health.

Edit Invite manuallyPromoteDismissUndismissBlock for lanesplittersHideShare to KinjaGo to permalinkOn Aug. 3, 2012, Justin Wilkens was speeding on his Aprilia motorcycle and unwittingly passed Oregon State Police Officer Rob Edwards in an unmarked cop Camaro. After a few minutes of chase, Edwards rammed Wilkens off the bike, pulled a gun on him and kicked him in the chest.

If you think that sounds egregious, a jury agrees with you.

Dash cam footage shows Wilkens’ motorcycle speeding past cars and crossing double-yellow (no passing zones) lines near Veneta, OR when the officer pulls up behind him at an intersection, hits the bike and knocks the biker to the ground. Edwards maintained this was unintentional; a result of “brake fade” from the Camaro’s discs being overworked. At this point in the footage, Edwards enters the frame and lands a kick to Wilkens’ chest while drawing down on him with his pistol before cuffing him.

In an interesting plot twist, Edwards stated he did not know the police car’s dashcam was running. Wilkens suffered a broken left clavicle, a fractured rib and other injuries in the incident.

After being apprehended, Wilkens brought an excessive-force claim against Edwards. As explained by local news, a jury of eight people “awarded Wilkens more than $31,000 in economic damages to reimburse his medical expenses and motorcycle repair bills; $100,000 in noneconomic damages for his injuries, pain and suffering; and $50,000 in punitive damages,” which Officer Edwards will be forced to pay. reflection of reality – motorcycle riding is good for your health, both mentally and physically. When riding a motorcycle, the brain of the rider is stimulated. Differences in brain use and level of brain stimulation can be observed in motorcyclists who ride regularly and in motorcyclists who have not ridden for extended periods.

Staying hydrated is always crucial any time of year.

Oh for the love of our machines: Now that the warm weather has returned, our TCLOCKS are important prior to long or short rides. Ensuring that the folks we ride with are also riding safely is important. Remind your Brothers and Sisters to also inspect their rides. No one wants to ruin a ride due to unnecessary mechanical breakdowns or blow out from bald tires. Something you may want to consider- is a spot check of bikes within your club or chapters. Don’t give law enforcement a reason to pull you over. Most know this but friendly reminders are always good. T-CLOCK is a

mnemonic developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for assisting you in doing a comprehensive pre-ride (or a prepurchase) inspection of a motorcycle. It is easily memorized and very useful. The individual letters stand for the specific areas to check: T — Tires & Wheels C — Controls L — Lights O — Oil C — Chassis K — Kickstand

News from the Net for a hippy killer like this one for too long.

A quick look at the low-slung, tightlined 2017 Octane reveals a motorcycle that first and foremost is built to thrill. You can't miss that brand-new 60-degree engine, a high-revving four-valve 1200cc liquid-cooled V-twin that— unlike most cruisers—was designed to sing its tune past the 8000 rpm mark. Victory announces that the Octane can deliver an authoritative 104 horsepower and is geared short for quick acceleration. They say the Octane can sprint down the quarter-mile in 12 seconds and hit the 0-60 mph in under four seconds.

We're deep into sportbike territory here, and that's certainly more ponies than any production Victory motorcycle has ever spat out.

Heck, I feel like we're already on a first name basis with this bike, so let's drop the formalities. Octane’s solidmounted powertrain is a stressed member that connects cast-aluminum front and rear frame sections with twin tubular-steel backbones for added reinforcement. A fast and nimble motorcycle like Octane must have a stiff chassis to transfer power squarely to the pavement and to let the steering and suspension do their work with maximum efficiency. To that effect, Octane also uses a conventional 41mm telescopic fork equipped with dual-rate springs up front, while the back gets a pair of preload-adjustable shocks, also with dual-rate springs. ========================== Buffalo Chip — Guess The Band Contest

Hello. I have Worked in Aerospace/Defense Machining.and as a Mechanic, and Equipment operator. and am excited and Honored. to Be Elected to Sit, as Vice President at State Level. i will do my Best To represent Us All. Dawn Steed, State Secretary

Let’s see now. How to answer the dreaded “Tell me about yourself” question? What to share, what to not share.

I was born in Aurora, Oregon and am the oldest of 12 kids. Yadda, yadda, and Fast forward.

I was introduced to ABATE in 1997 by my mother in law Reeda who was a lifetime member of the Davis County chapter, ABATE of Utah.

It wasn’t until my husband Nolan and I settled here in Arizona that we finally decided to join up in May 2014. East Valley Chapter ended up being the lucky ones. Later that year I was lucky enough that they sent me to Meeting of the Minds with Jim Silk, Mary K, and Jean giving birth to “The Conference Virgin” as they lovingly called me. While we were gone they nominated me for PAC. I am telling you don’t go pee or anything else during nomination time. I ended up raising my hand for communications and secretary too. I spent a year struggling to juggle all 3 offices and work full time, Silly me. I must admit a good learning experience. I was lucky enough to be sent to Meeting of the Minds again, this time with Jim S, Larry and Tami, Teresa and Ben. We met up with Jim B there. It was a whole other level of adventure. Knowing that Tami would be taking the PAC position made

Introducing: ABATE State Officers things easier.

This is my second year on the Hard Ass Run committee, and my first year being on the Too Broke for Sturgis committee. I have limitations. It has taken me 45 years to admit that. So now when talk of Jean getting tired and wanting a break started to swirl of course who speaks up to help out and be groomed for the State Secretary position? Yeppers, you guessed it that would be me. I love Jean dearly and nobody will ever be able to properly fill her shoes. Good thing I have her on speed dial. As soon as I made the decision to put my name in the hat I told the chapter that I would rerun for secretary only. I am proud to say that I stood my ground during the Chapter elections when nobody spoke up to take the communications position. It was very hard not to raise my hand. .

even as a member of ABATE Chicago Chapter since 2007 but I never held a position, not that I didn’t want one it was that membership at Chicago ABATE was and continues to be deep and loyal and there were numerous members ahead of me and my intentions are to grow and bring that attitude to Arizona ABATE.

Teresa and I concentrated on training riders to become first responders through Accident Scene Management. In 2012 we moved to the valley and have been enjoying the weather, highways and scenery but miss my three daughters and granddaughter back in Chicago. One of my goals is to visit all the chapters and that I get to meet you in person.

Ben Martinez, State Membership

My name is Ben Martinez and I am your new State Membership Officer out of the Phoenix Shadow Mountain Chapter. I have been riding since I was 12 years old. A friend of mine invited me over one day to hang out to ride his mini bike and once I got on it I never wanted to get off. I saved my money as a caddy the following year and have owned a bike ever since. Currently my 2006 Honda Shadow has 132,000 miles on it and feel an upgrading is coming soon, an Indian is a possibility. I had always been an independent rider,

I was born and raised on the NW side of Chicago. I have been in Arizona for 4 years this March. I’m engaged to an awesome guy who is also active in ABATE (your State Membership Officer). I am a mom of 2 awesome daughters who also ride -and a grandma of a precious 3 year old.

I am a Masters Degree prepared Registered Nurse who has practiced for 23 years primarily in Prehospital, Emergency and Trauma. I now work in a Valley Hospital as Director of Education, Trauma Services and Infection Prevention. I am an American Heart Association Instructor for CPR and Advanced Cardio-Life Support. I am a course Director for Trauma Nurse Core Course and a member of the Emergency Nurses Association. I also am an Instructor Trainer for Accident Scene Management- that awesome class that trains riders how to handle accident scenes until EMS arrives. (www.accidentscene.org ) Recently I have joined the Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation Advisory Board. (www.amsaf.org ).

I started riding when I was a pre teen on dirt bikes and ATVs. Keeping up with the big boys has never been difficult for this Tomboy. 2 wheel adventures are sure a favorite and the key to my heart is motorcycle accessories. My current Honda Shadow Aero “Mo” has 71k of my miles on it.

Living in Chicago, I was also a member of ABATE of Illinois – Chicago Chapter. I enjoyed going out to high schools providing the Motorcycle Awareness Program. From 2006-2012 I was the Director of Training and Curriculum for Rescue Riders- a 501c3 organization that recruits, trains and educates riders the core curriculum of Accident Scene Management and puts it to work by providing volunteer medical support for large Motorcycle rides and events. (www.rescueriders.org)

My vision as State Safety Officer is to incorporate education to all riders for the rider, passenger and the ride. I’d like to offer education for CPR and Accident Scene Management Classes to ALL Chapters. This is also my second year as

ABATE Officer Name: Hooody (Judy Brus)

ABATE Chapter: Shadow Mountain ABATE

ABATE Member Tenure: Off and on for about 10 years. I wanted to be more consistently involved so by taking on an officer position, I have upped the ante for myself. I tend to join the meetings where I might otherwise have slept in! &#X1f603 So I guess my strategy is working, and hopefully you will all benefit as much as I know I will.

Of course, it is NEVER too cold or too hot to RIDE here. I'm stayin.

Riding History: I recognized my inner BCW (Biker Chick Wannabe) in my teens, but with no access to even dirt bikes or ATVs (just cows and horses), it really hung in 'wannabe' mode for a long time!

Once on my own, that feeling of BCW grew to unbearable levels and I was often heard saying "it ain't Spring til I get a ride on 2 wheels!"

SO.....rather than wait on the sidelines for my 'Spring intro ride', I opted for my own little slice of riding heaven....a rough riding 1979 Sporster (yes, the AMF years; don't rub it in!)

While my excursions often consisted of riding away from the house -- and walking back pushing a 600-pound rolling 'stone'. Surprisingly, it did nothing to squelch a reconfirmed love of wind in my

face and a sense of freedom and indepence that I have yet to surpass.

Now parking my butt on a 2001 Heritage Softail Classic that my brother reluctantly parted with only 1600 miles after he brought his 'baby' home, I've been riding just under 20 years.

I ride SOMEwhere, almost daily, and yes, sometimes I ride it when I should be WASHING it! If you think that's bad,

The East Valley ABATE booth has become a familiar fixture at Motorcycles on Main, which is an event held on the 1st Friday of every month from 6 to 9 pm in downtown Mesa. Favorite AZ short ride: Mingus/Jerome/Skull Valley - any combination of them!

Furthest 'shirt' destination: Paris, France - during the Sportster-owning years, I traveled for work and once hoofed, bussed and sprinted an entire day back and forth through Paris, getting repeatedly incorrect directions to the Paris Harley dealership for my destination shirt. If you know the French (few really ever do), they really DID have good intentions, but also had no clue where the Dealership WAS, even though I carried address in hand (ah yes, pre-

GPS....). I beat closing time by 10 minutes to land in the....absolutely....tiniest....HD shop EVER (smaller than Glendale HD's old store on Grand Avenue!). Lotsa parts, a couple bikes, and about 20 shirts. !! It really IS all about GETTING THERE! Mision Acomplis!

motorcycles.

Parti was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on June 23, 1935. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1945. The neighborhood that Parti grew up in was, in his own words, “very motorized,” so by the time he was teenager he was already getting his hands greasy in old motors. At 15, Parti bought an old Ford jalopy. When his mother saw the car, she threatened to chain the tires together until Parti turned 16 and got his drivers license. Early on, he bought an old Indian Scout

for $15, which Parti pointed out was the going rate for a bike that didn’t run in those days.

As he became an adult, Parti had a group of buddies who shared in his enthusiasm for cars and motorcycles and they all followed each other in one another’s interests. If one got into desert racing, they’d all get into it; if one got into scrambles, they’d all follow along. And, as Parti remembered, if one decided to hang out at a beer joint they all joined in. A local Harley-Davidson mechanic,

PAGE 13

Harry Sorensen, who’d befriended Parti, was instrumental in getting him more involved in bikes.

“One day I was taking a radiator in to be fixed for the umpteenth time,” remembers Parti. “Harry told me that motorcycles didn’t have radiators and you didn’t have to crawl underneath to work on them and the girls were prettier. I became a motorcyclist on the spot.”

By the mid-1950s, Parti began racing scrambles on old Indians and Harleys. He finally tired of competing on old, wornout bikes and broke down and bought a new bike – a Triumph Cub – and started racing the 200cc class. At one point, famous Speedway racer turned motorcycle dealer Wilbur Lamoreaux was a sponsor.

In the early 1960s, Parti became a sidecar enthusiast. He remembers riding his wife and baby daughter around in the sidecar.

“Ladies would pull up to the light and smile, thinking the sidecar was cute, and then they would turn to a look of horror after seeing the baby in my wife’s arms.”

Parti took to racing the sidecar rigs and found that his former sprint car racing experience translated well to the sidecars. During the mid 1960s, Parti held the AMA’s District 37 number one plate for sidecars for three straight years, earned in all forms of off-road racing – scrambles, enduro and desert racing. He rode the famous Greenhorn Enduro 11 times at the controls of a sidecar rig. He passed yesterday (Feb 14th) in a Southern California hospital of naturals causes. He was one of the masters. ===========================

First trial delayed for biker arrested after Texas shootout

WACO, Texas (AP) — A judge has postponed the first trial scheduled for one of the many bikers arrested after last year's deadly shootout at a restaurant in Waco, Texas.

During a pretrial hearing Friday, Judge Matt Johnson scheduled a hearing for April 1 to consider Matthew Clendennen's motion for a change of venue. Clendennen had argued that pretrial publicity would taint the jury pool. The district court judge also ordered the state to turn over evidence from a federal sting operation that led to the January indictment of top officers of the Bandidos motorcycle club. Nine people were killed outside a Waco restaurant in an apparent confrontation between the Bandidos and Cossacks motorcycle clubs. Evidence reviewed by The Associated Press shows that four of the dead were shot by the rifles police use. ===========================

Hells Angels lose bid to take back B.C. clubhouse

VANCOUVER - The Hells Angels have lost a bid to regain control of a clubhouse in Nanaimo, B.C., in advance of a civil trial scheduled for next year.

The province seized the clubhouse in November 2007 under the Civil Forfeiture Act.

Orders were granted against the property by B.C. Supreme Court judges at that time and again in March 2009, meaning the building and its contents could not be used, mortgaged or sold.

Lawyers for the Hells Angels Motorcycle Corp., Angel Acres Recreation and Festival Property Ltd. and several individuals applied to set aside the orders in B.C. Supreme Court.

They have asked Justice Barry Davies to allow Angel Acres Recreation and Festival Property Ltd. to regain possession of the Nanaimo clubhouse pending a civil trial set for May 2017.

MASTERLINK MARCH 2016

Davies has dismissed the application, ruling there's enough physical and expert evidence to support allegations that the clubhouse could be used in the future for unlawful activity by the Hells Angels.

His ruling notes the director of civil forfeiture is trying to seize clubhouse and its contents, including clothing, bar equipment and alcohol, as well as more than $10,600 in Canadian currency and US$278. The ruling says the director of civil forfeiture will also seek the seizure of clubhouses in Vancouver's east end and Kelowna in May 2017. ============================ Mongols Motorcycle Club asks expo shooting witnesses to tell the truth

In a rare move, the Mongols Motorcycle Club held a news conference Thursday in Denver where a bow-tie-wearing lawyer, flanked by unidentified club members, spoke about Saturday's biker brawl that left one man dead.

Las Vegas attorney Stephen Stubbs read from a statement and rarely veered from the script, which he described as important and pointed. The statement included the Mongols' version of what happened in the fight between their club and the Iron Order Motorcycle Club at the Denver Motorcycle Expo at the National Western complex.

"The Mongols Motorcycle Club is confident that the many independent witnesses will tell the truth and this matter will be handled appropriately," Stubbs said. "Everyone has the right to defend themselves from physical confrontation. If someone is threatened or attacked, that person has the right to stand up for himself and use appropriate force to defend against that threat. However, any force used to defend yourself must be reasonable." Victor Mendoza, a 46-year-old Mongol, died from a gunshot wound he received during the brawl. Seven others were injured, including someone who was stabbed.

Each side has blamed the other for starting the fight.

Stubbs' statement said Mendoza was trying to disarm an Iron Order member who

pletely different!] opinions. We can’t get enough! when it comes to supporting opinions in our quest to educate that big wide world of NON-riders. I’m bettin’ on bigger’n’better exposure here. After all, everyone in the state of Arizona probably knows OF a ‘rider’, whether it be “that lady in Marketing who rides her Vespa to work on Thursdays”, “my sister’s nephew showing off his first sport bike”, or “my uncle who just retired and went out and bought a motorcycle out of the blue”.

United….We Stand! - Crossing Barriers to Strengthen Our Message What, what is that you say? What barriers? While I haven’t been an officer for long, I have spent years listening and observing – to riders, to friends and acquaintances. So today I’m talking TO you… ABOUT you….and YOUR potential … to strengthen our collective riders’ VOICE in a cage-based world.

Why should we Cross Those Barriers? For information. For solidarity. For strength in numbers. So we can join together in protecting our remaining freedoms of the road.

And wait, a voice in the Legislature is only part of it. I’m talkin’ about a voice with the crotch rocket rider who speeds past you - or the cruiser who is squelching your ‘need for speed on an open highway some early Sunday morning. I’m also talking about awareness for “the 2nd ripple” – those riders all have friends; those riders all have families and jobs with coworkers; those riders all talk to people in line at the Circle K and at the supermarket. We need to understand the common traits AND the differences to really Cross Those Barriers. The fact is: we still all want the same thing –a safe ride without unnecessary limitations. And I don’t think the non-riders want to deny us those freedoms – they just aren’t aware.

So how can we strengthen our bond – and as a result, increase awareness? Here’s some ideas to Cross Those Barriers.

DO Respect all riders and their [com-

Talk to them and Cross That Barrier. You’ll likely discover that the Vespa rider doesn’t want to wear a helmet either, the nephew wants a riding class to get his ‘M’ on his license, and the uncle on his cruiser didn’t know he could go to a Day at the Dome to show his solidarity and meet riding buddies at the same time. Sounds like win-win-win to me. DO Visit other ABATE Chapter Meetings At January’s State Officer meeting, we identified the desire for stronger communications between chapters – our 2016 State ABATE President Jim Butsback confirms that for 2016, Crossing This Barrier is a high priority.

I encourage YOU, as ABATE members, to Cross That Barrier and visit another chapter’s meeting – it’s easy to get date/time/address at the ABATE Events Calendar. If you’re looking for a ride destination, it won’t cost you more than some gas and a couple hours of your time to hear some new rumblings about helmet laws on the horizon or profiling. OR, you could just stay home and play couch potato . . . just sayin’.

TIP: Your Chapter can alert everyone of special topics or events by posting info

DO Recognize our Numbers. At our Shadow Mountain Chapter meeting this month, I’m told 886 thousand motorcycle riders are out there on Arizona roads and trails – yet only a small percentage belong to Arizona ABATE, quite minimal in comparison to other states. How do we Cross This Barrier? I think here, again, it’s all about expanding our communications circle – Yes, yes, exactly! Talking to people you don’t normally encounter. You’ll be surprised at what you find out AND what can be accomplished.

DO Explore Other Organizations. So ABATE is your brotherhood of choice. I’m not saying leave ABATE, no no NO, not by any means – and let’s recognize that maybe ABATE is not your one’n’only, but here’s the good news on that. Unlike many other relationships, ABATE encourages your outside affairs because we’re all directed to the same freedoms and the same breaking down of any challengers to those freedoms. So please, Cross That Barrier – and feel free to share what you learn via email or bring it to your next chapter meeting. My guess is your local officers would appreciate any tidbit of research that helps them…to help you. Now it’s time to CROSS THAT BARRIER (CTB)!!!

This month, I challenge you to Cross That Barrier…for real! Talk to someone outside your normal circle if you’re Mr.Conversation/Ms. Social. . . . or soak up some info on the multitude of websites (www.MMA.com, www.MRF.com, for example) if you prefer individual time and statistical details as your

Share your CTB Moment and Win a Prize And let’s raise the stakes a bit – anyone sharing their CTB moment prior to March 4, 2016, will have their email entered in a drawing for a nominal prize valued at $5-20. This is non-sponsored, a hoody-based challenge (I’m Hooody, remember). The only caveat for the winner being that I’ll need your physical address to mail you your prize -- or maybe we can meet up for our own CTB moment if you win. Simply send me an email (hooodyhooo@msn.com) with “CTB” in the subject line, include your story with at least 1) how you think this was a CTB moment and 2) What was gained (Example: learned about profiling/gained a riding buddy/got drunk and had an energy-burnin’ fistfight). It’s all good.

Tip when Crossing Those Barriers – Remember …a simple compliment or useful factoid can capture people’s attention, even if only briefly. Wow that bike looks GOOD on ya! Where did you get those pipes? (See what I mean?)

And you always have room for a new perspective or some new riding connections – it’s a network with unlimited potential, isn’t it? Let’s make it work… FOR ABATE and its Riders.

Ride Safe, Cross Those Barriers, and let me know how I’m doin’! --Hooody-Hooo

pointed a gun at a crowd of people.

Mendoza was acting in self-defense, he said, and the shooter's actions were unreasonable.

"He was a dedicated father and husband," Stubbs said of Mendoza. "A true brother and friend with the talent to make kids smile. Victor Mendoza sacrificed his life attempting to save others. There is no greater love than this."

Stubbs described the shooter, who has not been identified, as "some intoxicated lunatic." A Colorado Department of Corrections officer, Derrick Duran, fired a shot in the fight. He is on administrative leave.

Police have not said whether Duran's shot struck anyone. Duran, who used the nickname "Kong," has been identified as a member of the Iron Order.

John C. Whitfield, an attorney for the Iron Order, said the Mongols' version of the fight is "fantasy." He also criticized the club for holding a news conference but refusing to cooperate with the police investigation.

"It's one thing to hold a press conference," Whitfield said. "It's another thing to do what law-abiding citizens do — and that's cooperate with the investigation."

On Thursday, Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman said detectives continued interviewing witnesses and the investigation was ongoing.
