ABATE of AZ. 7509 N. 12th St, #200 Phoenix, AZ 85020

The Lobbyists are working on “Lane Sharing” for this session of the legislature. From some of the comments received when I mentioned this to my chapter it was obvious that not everyone thinks that this is safe.

Plans are well underway for Motorcycle Day at the Dome, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 22, 2012. As the date gets a little closer I’ll post it on our website. Mark your calendar and plan to be there if you can. If you’ve never attended before, I can assure you that you will not regret visiting the “Copper Dome” and meeting the legislators. This is what ABATE is about, taking an active part in legislation that effects motorcyclists. Last year after the luncheon we had the opportunity

What I’d like to emphasize is that Lane Sharing is not something that you have to do. It does alleviate the problem of overheating motorcycles with air-cooled engines and worse yet, overheated motorcyclists and that’s the reason the Lobby Team believes it would be beneficial to Arizona. What we would like to propose is using this option in very definite situations that occur only on “State Highways and Interstates in Arizona” where the traffic is either stopped or

going under 25 mph. If we are able to get this passed, there is a period written into the bill that would be used to advertise and educate not only the motorcycling community, but all Arizona drivers. If passed it wouldn’t go into effect until Dec. 31st, 2012. There will be a full year to determine if enactment of “Lane Sharing” has been successful. At this point if it is successful “Lane Sharing” will be written into permanent law. Please be assured the Department of Public Safety and the Highway Patrol are being met with for their input before anything is drafted. health plans would provide health-care benefits for employees involved in illegal activities, like driving a car while drunk, but cut off those benefits from many legal activities such as riding a motorcycle. Employees that travel in an auto to business related events are reimbursed their mileage, yet many companies will not authorize you to travel by motorcycle.

Yet they do and get away with it. *As those of us at TBFS this year witnessed, they can pull you out of your tents, motor homes, and beds to try and gain any possible information that they can with or without probable cause. These practices are happening all the time and all over the U.S.

Another example of discrimination happened when someone was attempting to park in a "public" lot at his Dr's office, the gate attendant would not let him in. He said that motorcycles are not allowed in the "public" lot. A legal, registered, insured vehicle & a licensed taxpayer is being discriminated against. Will taxes on the bike be lowered as it doesn't have the same rights as a car?

Now I know a lot of you are thinking "I don't wear a patch so why should I care or worry?" Well there are so many types of discrimination that affect everyone on 2 wheels. Although business can't discriminate based on race, in some states, they can based on the fact that you ride a motorcycle! The First Amendment DOES NOT protect you from local business owners discriminating against you because of the clothes you wear, your membership in a motorcycle club, or the fact that you ride a motorcycle, even if your patch represents the fact that you joined the military to defend our First Amendment Rights. How can that be? discrimination is discrimination period. Did you know that motorcycle lenders are classifying motorcyclists as high risk. On the average, when a motorcycle lender is looking to approve any motorcycle financing they have a much higher cut off in the credit score range than an auto lender. This exists whether you have good or bad credit. Employers are discriminating against motorcyclists, leaving them without insurance coverage when they were involved in recreational activities such as riding a motorcycle that might lead to injury, when some

And let us not forget the "Safety Checkpoints", this program blatantly discriminates against motorcyclists and fails to address motorcycle safety. The motorcycle check points do not address nor decrease motorcycle accidents and instead “profiles” motorcyclists and discriminates against citizens based on their mode of transportation and clothing. If the NHTSA is truly interested in motorcyclist safety, it should fund proven programs that help prevent crashes, such as mandatory motorcycle awareness classes rather than checkpoints that single out motorcyclists. There are so many levels of discrimination, I could go on and on and if we allow any of these practices to happen it will only escalate. As they take away our rights it only gets easier. If we let them get away with even 1 form of discrimination, eventually there will be no motorcycles on the roads. They will continue to take more and more. Sadly, the fight continues, this is what

Is it illegal to discriminate against bikers? It only stands to reason that it would be illegal, right? The government, whether it's the feds, the state, your county, or any government-owned entity, cannot discriminate based on race, gender, or national origin. They can't forbid you from belonging to a motorcycle club, or wearing clothes that give a message they don't like, such as your club patch, for example.

Opinion Pieces: For and Against Changing Too Broke Admission Policy FOR:

AGAINST:

Why vote for enactment of ballot initiative? TBFS has turned into one of the best biker parties in Arizona. However, many participants have no idea what ABATE is all about: specifically, that we are a not-for-profit-motorcycle rights organization and not event promoters. Nearly all of the people that made inappropriate comments and even threatening physical harm to TBFS committee people regarding the event coming to an early end this year were not Motorcycle Rights Organization members. They thought we were just being greedy by kicking everyone out and pocketing their money. They had no idea about the fact that this fundraiser is for a not-forprofit organization and is benefitting every motorcyclist in Arizona, even if they are not members of our organization. The volunteer members that put thousands of man hours into the planning and implementation of TBFS, live and breathe motorcycle rights. By having an MRO membership requirement for entry to this phenomenal fundraiser, we are saying loudly and clearly that

Reasons, WHY, to leave Too Broke for Sturgis as it is...... I have been a member of ABATE of AZ for almost 20 years now, and have seen a lot of members come and go, a lot of policies come and go, a lot of changes over many years. I hear some people on the Too Broke Committee bring up that different things are done in different States, and that may be great for them, but if you have been in AZ very long and been a member of a Motorcycle Rights Organization very long, things that do work in other States, DO NOT seem to work here. Yes, we just endoured a terrible tragedy, which has definately had a major effect on our Event, on a lot of the participants, on the Vendors, and on the Venue, is that reason enough to initiate new policies concerning attendance? I don't think so. Personally I think we have been missing the opportunity to capitalize on what ABATE is all about, what we have accomplished over the years, and the importance of being a member. Get people motivated by showing them what can be done

Chapter Reports East Valley Chapter Meeting was held at 11:00am on August 8th 2011. Points of interest that were talked about was the upcoming Hard Ass Run on October 1st, it will be the 10th anniversery. Also that Redbone is taking on the role as board representitive of East Valley. Another important matter coming up this month is chapter officer elections, which you will see the results in the next Masterlink. Thats all for now till next time. Make sure to stay hydrated in this heat, and remember keep the shiny side up! Events coming up Hard Ass Run______October 1st, 2011Motorcycles on Main____ October 7th, 2011 Comm. High Country Chapter Hello brothers and sisters, Well up here in High Country, the weather is starting to cool down! But its feeling good. Come on up enjoy it !Its a nice ride ! Well we are having a chili cookoff, October 22nd bring ur chili on up and if its the best win the 1st place prize! Elections are coming up please vote ! Chicknbone H.C.C.

Mohave Chapter Hi Everyone, This has been one shaky start for the recovery of the Mohave County Chapter. First we start out with basically a skeleton crew of officers. Then "Too Broke", now we just lost two officer positions held by Mary Smith who due to personal reasons has resigned. Secretary and Treasurer positions are now open. We were unable to hold our September meeting due to the vacancies and another officer being out of town for a few weeks. Today my ViceCoordinator paid me a visit, to tell me he was moving to Bakersfield area for a good paying job. So add ViceCoordinator to that list of openings. So, I am reaching out to our Mohave County ABATE members to step up to the plate and help us fill these vacancies. Our next meeting will be October 2nd at noon, at the Moose Lodge #1860 on Miracle Mile in Bullhead City. Anyone interested in running for an office, please attend that meeting. Our gun raffle is going to go off without a hiccup, with a winner to be drawn on October 1st at noon at Cathie'z Leathers on Hwy 95 in Bullhead. Tickets are still available at Cathie'z or the Moose Lodge #1860 until 15 minutes before noon on October 1st. Good Luck to all those who have purchased tickets. Until next month... Ride safe, Joe Monfredo Coordinator/Mohave Chapter

Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter Happy September! It is going to cool down soon I hope. Riding weather is on it’s way. It was another great turn-out for this month meeting, we actually got a lot accomplished. Moon Mullins Run is on it’s way, it is going to be awesome! Check out the flyer FMI. This month our members really stepped up for 2012 Chapter Officers, you may be surprised on who is on the ballot. Congratulations to Charity for winning the spot for MRF’s Young Activist Scholarship Program. Safety officer Jean Cooper will be having First Responder and CPR classes every other month starting this September.

Reserve your spot in class now as they fill up fast. There is also a need for MAP Instructors, See Jean for more information.

Rich Milinovitch won the 50 / 50. Nick Pauly won the dollars jar but wasn’t present. The jar rolled the $ 18 over to the September meeting.

Rumor has it that we may be having a Tombstone Run next spring…I haven’t done this ride, but I hear it’s a helluva good time….details to follow as spring gets here.

Jim reminded us to watch for sand. Ron didn’t listen and went down in town due to sand in an intersection.

I would like to Thank Everyone who donated and rode with us the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Looking for Too Broke for Sturgis merchandise, items still available online.

Southern Arizona Chapter Rich Montgomery went down in Idaho recently. He is still in intensive care in Idaho. Besides a badly broken leg he has 5 broken ribs. The ribs have caused damage to his lungs. He is on a ventilator so that they can manage the fluid buildup. All we know about the crash is Rich went off the road for some reason. There were no other vehicles involved. His partner riding in front didn’t see him leave the road but saw the dust cloud and returned. Members will be updated by email on his progress. The meeting was kicked off right on time at 9 AM. Vice coordinator Jim DeYoung ran the meeting. After the pledge we got right to the reports. Dawn reported that since the iron ons were going to cost $10 each without the shirt we haven’t ordered any yet. We may need to revisit silk screened shirts again. Membership is up to 132 active members and 6 business members. Sean gave us the current info on the legislative front. HR2715 passed both houses and the president signed it into law August 12th. Up until then it was illegal to sell youth sized motorcycles and atvs. Also nationally we are working on the “Right to Repair” issue and motorcycle only “Safety stops”. There will be some items on the November election ballot. Should TBFS be a mro only event. Entrants would have to prove they belonged to ABATE, MMA, MMMA, or MRF. Another item will ask if the chapters should be able to elect their own BOD members. Currently the chapter nominates their member and they are elected by a vote of the general membership. Members were reminded about the road clean-up on Saturday 9-10-2011. We discussed raising money. Our poker runs have not shown a profit. The main discussion revolved around a spaghetti feed like East Valley does. They make a very good profit since almost everything is donated. The Eagles Club on Stone will give us the hall for free but wants $50 if we use their kitchen. . Jim Butsback works for a catering company and can assist with tray warmers, wholesale food, and cooking. We remembered we once had an event at the Wildcat house where they discounted the food for a setoff menu choices. We discussed having bands and venders. After much discussion it was decided to have the event in January or February. There will be a group ride to the inaugural Yuma Chapter meeting on August 27th at 11 AM. Leaving Marana Road at 5 AM. The requirement to become a state officer is to have served as a chapter officer for one year. Since we have such a small group that would qualify we had no state officers nominated at this meeting. As for chapter officers we have Dawn for Treasurer and Jim Butsback for Coordinator. We will continue to take nominations and hold chapter elections in November. All positions are up for grabs.

The meeting was adjourned right on time at 10:05 AM. Ron Kool

Yavapai Chapter Fall is in the air in the Prescott region. Early morning rides might include something missing for past few months, In other words, leathers! Speaking of Fall, our chapter’s Oak Creek/Sedona Dice and Fun Run on October 8th should be a cool scenic ride. Sign in is from 7 AM to 10 AM, with kickstands up at !0:00 AM. Sign in is at Bobby D’s BBQ and English Kitchen on Main Street in Jerome. Our chapter is also participating in the Thunder valley Rally in Cottonwood at Kactus Kates. Our bike night this summer was a great way to start weekends on Friday nights. Some bikers braved some monsoon weather but still had a great time. Oh yeah, most importantly, money was raised for our members to attend important biker rights event, such as

Meeting of the Minds in Romulus, Michigan. There was a strong Yavapai Chapter turnout for the M.S. run on September 3rd sponsored by the Journeymen MC and the Desert Eagles MC. Thanks to clubs for putting on a great event for a very worthy cause. Longhair James is organizing a ride to Kid Chileen,s for the state elections on November 6th. As someone not familiar with the Yavapai Chapter can obviously see, we are a very active chapter committed to biker rights and education. . As a chapter we are encouraging all of our members to support all ABATE activities. For example, I have a feeling the Moon Mullins is not to be missed on October 29th. Our chapter has a very strong group of officers and members as well. We would like to sincerely express our gratitude to Margie for the support she has given to our chapter to help us become a strong chapter. She is always just a phone call away with answers and help. She took over a tough job under controversial circumstances and has been a truly strong and committed leader for ABATE of Arizona. A big OOOORAH from the Yavapai Chapter! ILLINOIS GOVERNOR SEEKS CHANGES TO RED LIGHT BILL

Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) PENNSYLVANIA MEASURE WOULD LIMIT LEARNER PERMITS ABATE of Pennsylvania is supporting legislation to limit the number of motorcycle learner’s permits allowed before a rider must get a license. “All too often those involved in serious accidents have no motorcycle endorsement on their license,” lobbyist Charles Umbenhauer of BikePAC told the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), adding that “In most cases this also means they have had no formal motorcycle rider training.” State Representative Seth Grove (RDover Township) has introduced legislation aimed at increasing motorcycle safety by requiring riders to get a motorcycle license rather than continuously reapplying for a motorcycle learner's permit. Currently, an aspiring rider can get a permit after passing a written test, which is good for a year to allow motorcyclists to legally ride and gain experience until they get their motorcycle license. However, some riders reapply to renew the permit year after year rather than getting a full license, Rep. Grove said. Under Grove's proposal, a rider would only be allowed to reapply for a learner's permit three times in 10 years. "The purpose is to make people get the license," stated Grove, adding that more motorcyclists taking the skills tests or enrolling in the state’s rider training program would mean more trained riders on the road. If a rider doesn't get a license within 10 years of receiving the first permit, he or she wouldn't be able to get another permit for seven years. The bill was referred to the transportation committee earlier this year and is expected to be addressed this fall.

Illinois motorcyclists who get stuck at red lights will remain stuck a while longer, as Governor Pat Quinn has vetoed legislation that would have made it legal to proceed through a red light that does not detect motorcycles. However, the bill may yet become law if legislators agree to make some changes. Illinois has what is called an Amendatory Veto, wherein the governor can reject a bill as presented for signing, but with changes requested that, if met, will win his signature. As written, House Bill 2860 sponsored by Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) and Representative Daniel Beiser (D-Alton), specifies that motorcyclists could run red lights "after a reasonable period of time." Quinn objected that such wording is too subjective and “its interpretation could vary from individual to individual and county to county." He asked that the bill be changed to specify that the motorcyclist must wait two minutes. Quinn also asked for clarification that motorcyclists would still have to obey signs prohibiting right or left turns on red and would still have to yield to oncoming traffic. ABATE of Illinois supported the measure when it passed the legislature in May, which is similar to laws enacted in 11 other states. “I was kind of disappointed with what the governor done,” said Sen. Forby. “ABATE’s going to have to make a decision on whether they want to negotiate with the governor’s office or try to override his veto.” The Illinois Legislature has placed the amendatory veto on its calendar for action on October 19. Call for M.A.P. Instructors We can use the impact of that news item to enhance our M.A.P. (Motorcycle Awareness Program). The M.A.P. is an educational program aimed at the target audience of high school students in driver’s education classes. There has been a small group of instructors who have volunteered to present the M.A.P. to students throughout the state. But, we need more instructors.

The recent news item about the group of bystanders lifting the burning care off the injured motorcycle has done a great deal for motorcycle awareness. Just think about it. A young man on his bike and the news repeatedly said, “The car ran into the motorcycle”. There were flames adding to the danger. A group of people lifted the car and pulled out a young guy. The next day when the motorcyclist went on the news the next day to thank everyone, he was clean cut and articulate. The whole unfortunate incident did so much to promote motorcycling awareness and share the road.

Remember, that ABATE stands for EDUCATE. Our purpose is to spread the word about safe motorcycling and promote a positive image of motorcyclists. What better way than to speak to the future drivers of our state. The students hopefully, will not only be better equipped car and truck drivers but will also be more aware and watch out for us. To become an instructor you must:

control of the group. Know the material being presented: There is an outline for all presenters to follow so there is uniformity in the material presented. Commit to teaching at least 2 classes per school year: We hope to have at least one volunteer instructor in each ABATE Chapter. That person will attend and instructor class (about 4 hours), attend a M.A.P. with an experienced instructor, teach a class with an experienced instructor in attendance. When the new instructor is comfortable and the experienced instructor assesses him/her to be ready the new instructor may begin teaching alone. The mentor program assures that everyone is teaching the same material and everyone has support.

Provide record of teaching to the M.A.P. Coordinator on a consistent basis. This is your opportunity to get the word out to new drivers about the importance of sharing the road with motorcyclists. This is your opportunity to support the mission and vision of ABATE in your community. The next instructor class will be November 15, 2011 at the ABATE State Office at the American Italian Club, 7509 N. 12th Street, Phoenix. Call me 602-616-9855 or email me azjkc@aol.com for more information and to register to become a M.A.P. Instructor. Jean Cooper ABATE State Safety Officer ABATE M.A.P. Coordinator

Be available during the day: The presentations in the high school driver’s education classes last about an hour during the school day. Be willing to stand up in front of a group of about 30 high school students and speak: That sounds easier than you think. You need to be able to gently maintain

ABATE is a volunteer organization that fights discriminatory legislation aimed towards the motorcycling community. ABATE's position is that all motorcycle riders have the right to choose not only the machine that they ride, but also the riding gear that they choose to wear or not to wear, (i.e. leathers, gloves, boots and helmets.) ABATE promotes rider education for all motorcycle riders and motorcycle awareness for all automobile drivers. ABATE needs the support of all motorcyclists.

PAC Report

Hello to all my Brothers and Sisters; I am looking forward to attending this years’ Meeting of the Minds, which will be held in Romulus, Michigan, September 22 – 25. The Conference is put on by the MRF, Motorcycle Riders Foundation. For those of you who are wondering Romulus is a suburb of Detroit. As far as information, Meeting of the Minds is superb. My November article will inform everyone what is going on throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and possibly our biker friends’ way down under from Australia. Some of

you may be asking why do I care what goes on in other countries? A little history lesson I will share with you. Many ideas, good or bad, start in Europe or maybe Australia. After becoming a law there, it seems this “law” or concept moves to Canada, from there the concept comes to the United States.

tion, “French Association of Angry Bikers” was able to show that the figures quoted were taken from winter months and extrapolated to the entire year. Then, using government agency data, they showed that in fact, deaths had dropped by 20%.

The Europeans for years have had many more restrictions placed upon them. For example, numerous aftermarket parts are not allowed on motorcycles. Modifying the bikes exhaust or motor is strictly enforced and not allowed. Restrictions on type of motorcycle “gear” clothing. In Europe it is mandatory that riders and passengers must wear a helmet. It has been the law for so long that they don’t even bother trying to fight it any longer.

State Officers elections and General Membership Meeting is just around the corner. Both start at 12:00 PM Sunday, November 6,2011 at Kid Chileen’s Bad Ass Bar B Que. Voting ends at 3:00 PM and the new State Officers will be announced at 4:00 PM. Come out and show your support not only by voting but stay for the Board Of Directors meeting, it will be interesting, As usual. Until next month;

France is considering banning all bikes more than 7 years old from urban areas, arguing that they put out too much pollution. A protest was staged in August when the government tried to push tighter sanctions on bikers, claiming they were necessary because motorcycle deaths had increased dramatically. A bikers associa-

We like to say Ride Free but that doesn't come free, we need to work together, no we need to fight together to protect ourselves. Until next month ride safe and watch out

MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2011

More Coast to Coast NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS REPEAL OF KIDS’ MOTORCYCLE BAN President Barack Obama signed a bipartisan consumer safety bill on August 12 that exempts youth-sized motorcycles and allterrain vehicles (ATVs) from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 that bans children’s products that contain lead. H.R. 2715, introduced by U.S. Representatives Mary Bono Mack (R-CA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), passed nearunanimously in the House 421-2 on Aug. 1 and was approved by unanimous consent by the Senate later that day. The measure excludes kids’ off-road vehicles from the overly-broad CPSIA lead certification rules, which previously prohibited their sale due to lead content of components such as batteries and brakes. “This law is a win-win for American consumers and the American economy,” said Congresswoman Bono Mack, “and I thank the President for signing this critically important bill into law.” Be sure to contact your federal legislators and thank them for rectifying the onerous “Lead Law” bike ban, and for supporting the rights of millions of off-road enthusiasts and future motorcyclists. ABATE OF MICHIGAN REQUESTS YOUR IMMEDIATE ACTION This urgent Call To Action is on behalf of ABATE of Michigan, requesting the help of all motorcyclists in their fight for freedom. “Senate Bill 291 passed the Michigan Senate in late June,” writes ABATE President Vince Consiglio. “We are asking all rights activists to send a post card to Michigan's Governor, Rick Snyder, urging him to support motorcycle helmet choice for adults.” Consiglio further advises that; “A postcard from a ‘FREE’ state may help him realize that Michigan loses motorcycle money every day of the summer with a mandatory helmet law. Governor Snyder prides himself on being all about business and helping business. Please urge Governor Snyder to support adult choice.” MAIL to: Governor Rick Snyder, State Capital, P.O. Box 30013, Lansing, MI 48909 or call (517) 373-3400 or e-mail Rick.Snyder@michigan.gov. Michigan is one of 20 states with a mandatory helmet law for all riders, but before the state legislature broke for the summer the Senate voted 24-14 on June 28th to repeal their 40-year old helmet requirement for motorcyclists 21 or older, who have been riding for at least two years or passes a safety test, and have $100,000 in personal injury insurance. A sunset provision would cause the ban on helmetless riding to resume in five years, unless the legislature acts again. The heavily-amended measure now moves to the House of Representatives for further action. NHTSA (AGAIN) PUSHES HELMET LAWS NHTSA Administrator David Strickland has testified once again before a Congressional committee urging federal action to get motorcyclists to wear helmets. On July 27, during a reauthorization hearing on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Strickland told a subcommittee of the U.S. Senate

Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation that “the most important step we can take to reduce the deaths of motorcyclists on our roads and highways is to assure that all riders wear a DOT compliant helmet.” He further stated that, “A grant program emphasizing the use of motorcycle helmets would be effective in reducing fatalities.” Last year, in response to Congressional testimony from Strickland that increased helmet use is the core component of NHTSA’s motorcycle safety plan, U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) introduced a resolution urging NHTSA to concentrate on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education instead of lobbying for helmet laws. U.S. MOTORCYCLE MARKET RESEARCH Research and Markets, a worldwide marketing research resource, has announced the addition of the "Motorcycle Dealers" report to their offering of over 718,000 global marketing research reports, which covers nearly 4,300 motorcycle-related stores in the United States with combined annual revenue of $18 billion. According to their industry research, no major companies dominate; most companies have a single retail outlet, “The industry is highly fragmented: the 50 largest companies generate just 10 percent of industry sales,” states the report. Under the “Competitive Landscape” heading, the R&M report says: “Discretionary personal income and interest rates drive demand, since motorcycles are high-ticket purchases and often financed. The profitability of individual companies depends on volume and sales of higher-margin goods like heavyweight motorcycles. Large dealers have advantages in broad inventory selections and negotiating power with manufacturers. Small dealers can compete effectively by providing superior customer service or offering unique services, like bike customization.” The report further observes that, “Major competitors include private market sellers, other recreational vehicle dealers, service center chains, and independent service shops.” Other key topics include: Industry Overview, Business Challenges & Trends, Industry Forecast & Opportunities, and Products, Operations & Technology: For those in the motorcycle industry or starting a motorcycle business, or interested in better understanding the two-wheel marketplace, check them out at www.researchandmarkets.com. R&M has also conducted numerous other motorcycle-oriented marketing reports, including a Global Industry Guide and a Global Motorcycle Report, which examines market conditions across Western Europe, North America as well as key emerging countries such as China and India. NEW REPORT REVEALS THAT 1 IN 7 DRIVERS ARE UNINSURED Summer is the time for road trips, long motorcycle rides and making those daily back-and-forth trips to run household errands. Chances are drivers will not be involved in a vehicle accident during these travels, but everyone likely will be involved in at least one motor vehicle accident in his or her lifetime. Across the United States, chances are

roughly one in seven that a driver is uninsured, according to estimates released in April from the Insurance Research Council. The economic downturn is thought to be a major factor in the increase of uninsured motorists, with approximately 13.8% of U.S. drivers being uninsured in 2009 despite laws in most states requiring drivers to maintain minimum coverage. In a new study, “Uninsured Motorists, 2011 edition,” the IRC estimates the percentage of uninsured drivers countrywide and in individual states for 2008 and 2009 based on the number of uninsured motorist insurance claims versus the number of bodily injury claims. In 2009, the five states with the highest uninsured driver estimates were Mississippi, 28%; New Mexico, 26%; Tennessee, 24%; Oklahoma, 24%; and Florida, 24%. The five states with the lowest uninsured driver estimates were Massachusetts, 4.5%; Maine, 4.5%; New York, 5%; Pennsylvania, 7%; and Vermont, 7%. The moral? Protect yourself by making sure you’re fully covered, with Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage included in your insurance policy! SAFEST STATES TO RIDE According to a statistical analysis from TheStreet.com financial website, the safest state to ride in is North Dakota, with a fatality rate nearly a third the national average, low levels of congestion and high quality road surfaces. In an article “The Safest States for Motorcycles” in the August 1st Business Section, writer Greg Emerson points out that, “The truth is that motorcycle riding is up. Way up. Between 1996 and 2005, motorcycle registrations increased 61% while vehicle miles traveled of motorcycles grew only 8.6%, according to the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. That means a lot of new riders, riding not very far or not very often.” In an effort to “help keep all those weekend warriors looking to get on a bike and go riding from losing their heads, we looked at the most recent fatality data -from 2009 -- to determine which states were the safest for the aspiring Evel Knievels among us. We ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia to see which ones had the smallest proportion of motorcycle deaths as a proportion of total traffic deaths.” Half of the states fall below the national average of 15.4%, and half above. Here are the 10 states with the lowest ratio of rider fatalities: Tenth-safest: Vermont - Motorcyclist fatalities: 68; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 11.8% Eighth-safest (tie): Virginia - Motorcyclist fatalities: 671; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 11.5% Eighth-safest (tie): Kentucky Motorcyclist fatalities: 745; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 11.5% Seventh-safest: Missouri - Motorcyclist fatalities: 806; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 10.8% Sixth-safest: Wyoming - Motorcyclist fatalities: 129; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 10.1% Fifth-safest: Alabama - Motorcyclist fatalities: 776; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 9.8% Fourth-safest: West Virginia - Motorcyclist fatalities: 334; Proportion of total vehicle

deaths: 7.5% Third-safest: Mississippi - Motorcyclist fatalities: 632; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 7.4% Second-safest: Nebraska - Motorcyclist fatalities: 211; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 7.1% Safest: North Dakota - Motorcyclist fatalities: 135; Proportion of total vehicle deaths: 5.2% HELMET AND ACCOUSTICS RESEARCH COULD QUIET THE RIDE After accelerating, most of the sound that a rider can hear isn't from the bike engine or other vehicles on the road, but from the air rushing over and around their helmet. Noise levels inside a helmet can reach rock-concert levels when traveling at highway speeds, and a group of engineers and psychologists from two U.K. universities have gathered to study how to minimize helmet noise to protect riders from hearing damage and reduce the potential distraction that noise poses to riders. Their research paper, which has been accepted for publication by The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, says that riders experience noise from multiple sources. First is the engine noise, which is a relatively insignificant factor once riders accelerate to highway speeds. Audible wind noise can reach volumes as high as 115 decibels or more, roughly equivalent to what power saw operators without ear protection would hear. OSHA recommends limiting such exposure to 15 minutes or less per day. Turbulent air buffeting off the motorcycle windshield is another source of noise, as is air rushing around the chin bar of the helmet. There's another type of sound experienced by riders, called body conducted sound. Aboard a motorcycle, this process transmits engine vibrations and the percussive force of the wind through the flesh and bone to the ear. Earplugs don't stop it, and it can be significant. Another topic under investigation by the Bath group is how sound impacts attention, and one experiment measured how different volumes of sound impaired a test subject's peripheral vision. While riders and others recognize that noise can be a serious health issue, many U.S. jurisdictions prohibit the use of earplugs or other noise-reducing devices. One long road trip could take a rider through numerous changes in local laws. NIGERIA BANS MOTORCYCLES IN TERROR-STRUCK CITY Officials in Maiduguri, Nigeria's seventh largest city and capital of northeastern Borno State, has banned motorbikes in a bid to curb militant activities borne on the backs of these ubiquitous vehicles. Motorcycles and Okada (motorcycle taxis) are the predominant mode of transportation in the mostly impoverished city, and members of the Motorcycle Transport Union have protested the ban on their livelihood, but the Borno State government is desperate to crack down on Boko Haram, an extremely orthodox Islamist sect that is seeking to overthrow the secular government in favor of a Muslim state. The terrorist group has become known for brazen public attacks conducted while riding motorbikes, and has killed at least 40 people including police officers and politicians in drive-by motorbike attacks. Opinion Pieces: For and Against Changing Too Broke Admission Policy (continued) FOR

AGAINST

TBFS is a motorcycle rights fundraiser first and foremost. By making membership in an MRO a requirement for entry, we educate more motorcyclists in Arizona as to what ABATE, the MMA, the MMAA and the ACMC are all about and how all four organizations are 'watching their backs'.

and a MasterLink subscription for the next 12 months. Both of which hopefully will entice them to become active members. Our strength is in numbers. By requiring membership, this could potentially give the MROs in this state the boost that is needed to continue our important mission.

If you are not a MRO member, you will need to join ABATE of Arizona to get into TBFS. This will accomplish many things including: increased membership

A vote for this policy change is a vote for the continued growth and success of ABATE of Arizona.

with all the motorcyclists of AZ becoming one voice working together to accomplish whatever we feel necessary to hold onto and keep the Freedoms that we daily see slipping away. If we decide to only allow MRO Members to our one and only fundraiser, not only will we now have many people that attend every year pissed off that they will no longer be able to attend, But I believe instead of what is trying to be accomplished by thinking that everyone that wants to come to the Party will now join ABATE, will not. I think this will do just the opposite, the attendance will be down and those that used to attend will go elsewhere. It would be very easy for another group recognizing what is going on to put together another Party somewhere else, and what have we accomplished by talking to ourselves? Remember the Freedom Rally. After 20 years of working very hard,

building up our Event, building up our Reputation for having the best Party in AZ, do we really want to go backwards? The Vendors that have been loyal followers of our Event, how do we ask all of them to continue coming and then tell them , oh by the way, there will probably only be about a third of the people here that were here last year. Changing our policies on our Fundraiser I believe will be detrimental, and wrong. Are we afraid to continue moving forward? You decide? State Officer Nominee Campaign Speeches President Margie Ferrucci Hi, for any of you that might not know me I am Margie F. I have been the State President of ABATE of AZ since my predecessor felt he no longer wanted the position in April. It was my intention to run for President this time around anyway, but, like they say, be careful what you wish for, lol. When the position was suddenly empty and I stepped up I never could have imagined what I was in store for. I knew nothing that was in the works, no contact names, etc. As Vice President I was never consulted or even brought up to speed about what the prior President was working on, not even so much as a paper trail to try to follow. But little by little I figured it out. Right before I took over our Flagstaff chapter was shut down despite my offer to go up and help save them. Since I have been President not only did we save a second chapter that was about to be shut down, but we also started a new chapter in Yuma. I feel very strongly that the

motorcycle laws in our state affect everyone exactly the same and everyone, independents, patch holders, sport bike riders, and even those who don't ride but care about justice, all of us who ride need to unite to protect our rights and freedoms. It is clear in our bylaws that part of the Presidents job is to "Work on establishing a coalition of motorcycle groups on a statewide basis in the common interests of motorcycle safety and political awareness;", I can honestly state that I have done that. I've done everything in my power to get us through some very trying events in the last 5 months, our President leaving, the tragic incident at Too Broke For Sturgis just to name two, and we have come through as strong if not stronger. I am a huge supporter of motorcycle awareness and have met with many of our cities Mayors to try and recruit more help to make the public more aware of us on the roads. I will close by asking for your vote so I may try to accomplish many more positives for the motorcycle community now that we

have made it through the rough times. I am looking forward to working with you all to accomplish the goals our membership sets for us. Below are the responsibilites set forth in our bylaws, I feel I have accomplished all of them in the past 5 months in office and hope to continue.

Tim O’Reilly

Arizona State President.

During the past several months I have been approached by many members from several ABATE Chapters, asking me to run for State President. I had not given any indication that I would run for State President when asked but did tell everyone who approached me that I would give it serious consideration, and if I thought there was sufficient interest and backing I would then make my decision. At this time I feel that I have sufficient backing and votes that I have made my decision to run for ABATE of

Now that I have made the decision to run for State President I am asking for your vote. As President I will represent all ABATE Members equally, as I did when I was State President two years ago. I also want to expand our membership. My goal is to continue the growth of ABATE of Arizona, business members, individual and Couple memberships.

State Vice President to President after Ross resigned his position for personal reasons. Margie has performed well as State President in the short time she has held her position.

Chapter; Safety Officer, PAC Officer and Phoenix Chapter; Run Coordinator. State Officer Positions were State PAC Coordinator, State Vice President and State President.

I started with ABATE of Illinois, as a Charter member of Will County ABATE in 2003. I continue to maintain my Charter membership with Will County to this day. We moved to Arizona in January of 2004. A few months later I joined ABATE of Arizona. The following 7 years I have held many positions, Shadow Mountain

Thank you for your support, and I hope to see you all at Kid Chilleen’s Bad Ass Bar B Que.

I’m running for State Vice President. I can sum up “why” in two words. NEW BLOOD.

Its not members having done a bad job, just time for others to step up and give those who have worked so hard a break. They’ve done a fantastic job

but need the rest.

a strong chapter through unity and doing what is right for A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona Yavapai Chapter. Some of you know me and some don=92t. Here are a few things to consider, I understand the By-Laws of A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona and the Policies and Procedures Manual and that they were formulated and submitted for approval by Bikers dedicated to promoting motorcycle safety and education, protecting our rights as a community of motorcyclists, and

opposing discrimination and I happen to agree with these passions. I ride daily, despise selective enforcement and discrimination, and believe that riders have a right to belong to any club or riding association they chose without fear of intimidation from law enforcement. Unity brings about strength and that is what we need to nurture as a brotherhood. Our voices are heard when one voice speaks through that unity. I can only hope to serve the membership as well as those

whom have served before me. Please consider me as a viable option when you cast your vote for the State Vice President for A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona. Thank you for your consideration.

Hello all, my name is Lynda Marie (HANDI) Barnett. I am currently the P.A.C. officer for the Yavapai chapter of A.B.A.T.E Throughout 2011 I have had many opportunities to get involved and inform our members of important changes in the laws that affect all motorcycle riders. Attending

NCOM in New Mexico and in RENO, NV a couple of years ago, I had an opportunity to gather a lot of information. Being in the mainstream and gathering information on important issues has been interesting and has given me the incentive to relay it in a way that was appealing and interesting enough for our members to listen to the issues being lob-

bied for and against that will ultimately make an impact on their freedom to ride their bikes where and when they want. Because I am a Patch Holder for Sober Riders MC, I believe I am able to help bridge the our MRO and the MC world. I believe we need to stand together and acknowledge that we have STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. I ride

a motorcycle and have for over 45 years, I am proud to be able to say that today. I bring an open mind, a willingness to listen and learn the ropes, computer skills, gift of gab, and a sincere desire to help inform all people of who we are, what we do, and how we can help open the doors for all riders to get involved and make a difference.

crazy?!??!! Me?????????

Hi Guys I’m Jim Page and I understand that I have been nominated for the state PAC position. I just want to say WHAAAT? Are you guy’s

If I’m elected, I want to get this organization better at political activism. Our community has some really great and dedicated lobbyists but we need to be better at supporting

them when the need us to call our representatives. I also want to better educate our members in the political process in general and get our members familiar with and comfortable with contacting their representatives.

OK so this is nothing new from what we want our PAC officer to do. But, I’ve bought a cattle prod.

I want to take this opportunity to Thank Margie Ferrucci for stepping up from

MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2011

Hamstertime Good Morning America. The very funny comedian, Robin Williams" once said Cocaine is God's way of telling you that you are making too much money. If that is true ( which it indeed it very well may be) then Gout is God's way of letting a person know they are having way too much fun. It seems that more and more people are being diagnosed with Gout these days so I just thought I'd give ya a little primer on what having Gout is actually like and it ain't no fun at all. Ah Yes Gout, to those of us who periodically suffer from this extremely painful condition we understand pain more than most normal human beings. Take Richard Marcinko for example. Richard Marcinko (USN retired) is the original founding member of the U.S. Navy's Seal Team 6 and a very entertaining writer of a number of excellent books. His book Rogue Warrior is one of my all time

favorite reads. Richard Marcinko ( like every US Navy Seal) is a man has dealt with a lot of pain from time to time in his famous career and he had an interesting observation of pain also, he said; " Pain is God's way of letting you know your alive". If that's true Gout suffers are as alive as anyone on the planet ! Gout has the uncanny ability to bring the strongest man or the toughest woman on earth down to their knees. When you get hit with a bout of the gout all you can do is suffer and tough if out. Ask anyone who has ever had it and you will see them cringe at the mention of the word.... So, what causes Gout, in a word.... FUN... Too much rich food, alcohol, stress, lack of sleep and just plain ol' living a little of the high life. Pretty much my everyday way of life. So

MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2011

PAGE 17

Hamstertime (continued) about once a year God gives me a little wake up call that I need to slow down a bit, sit down for a day and do absolutely nothing but wait for the pain and swelling to subside. You just sit there in pain, entirely too miserable to do anything more productive than consider life's great mysteries. During these times, God and I have some very deep and meaningful conversations. Sometimes,(as I'm doing right now) I'll sit down at my computer and write an article about it. I don't ask God stupid questions like..... Why Me? I know thousands of people in far off worse shape than I'm in . In fact, I thank God for everything in this life I have that he has blessed me with (yea, even the GOUT). I was diagnosed with Gout 30 years ago so Gout and I have been together for a pretty long time. Lately, I've been seeing a lot of TV commercials about Gout and all the new drugs that have come on the market to fight it. Not to cure it because once you have it, it's yours for life.;...... Deal with it ! I know when the Gout hits me( and it will hit me again) , it won't last . I'll just put a call into my friend and personal Physician Dr. Mike Jennings ( world's best Doctor) and he will send me something that will make the Gout disappear after 12 or 15 hours . But in those 12 to 15 hours boy, are you alive. Cussing, limping,

writhing in agony but alive for sure. One of the best cures for pain is laughter. As Allen Klein once said; Humor can alter any situation and help us cope at the very instant we are laughing. Humor does not diminish the pain- it makes the space around it get bigger. People who have never had Gout just don't understand how gut wrenchingly miserable a human being can be; Case in point....I was sitting in my easy chair one day having a bad case of Gout , with my foot up on a pillow eating pain pills and suffering something terrible. About that time, one of my worthless X girlfriends walked out of my bathroom, grabbed my swollen big toe and jerked it. At that very moment, I saw God !!.... with words that will live in my brain forever; she said "Ah, suck it up, puss boy" . I'm not a violent man but at that particular moment in my life......... !!! So, with all this pain and agony I'm currently dealing with you think I'd slow down, swear off beer, shrimp, fast living and hard riding ? No Way ! Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, for better or worse, in sickness and in health. Every day is a blessing and when you look at life in that way, it just don't get no better than that ! Peace ! Until Next Month. Ride Free and Ride Often......................... Hamster

Discrimination can range from a sign stating "No Colors" or "No Motorcycle Parking" or "No Motorcycle Attire" etc., to simply being asked to leave a place of business, just because you are on a motorcycle or because of your riding apparel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 3% of Roadway crashes involve motorcyclists but 17% of roadway fatalities were motorcyclists. Statistically, another motorcyclist is the first to be on the scene of a motorcycle crash. Coast to Coast (continued) met with a representative from the New York State Attorney General's office to discuss the ongoing motorcycle-only vehicle checkpoints. Since May 2008, ABATE has publicly expressed its opposition to New York State's tactic of conducting highway roadblocks which divert only motorcyclists from the state's roadways for the purpose of conducting "safety checks". Because motorcycles operated in New York State are already required to pass annual safety inspections, the ongoing New York State Police initiative serves only to harass, intimidate and inconvenience motorcyclists traveling upon the

state's roadways. Further, motorcycleonly roadblocks conducted in the name of "safety checks" are a discriminatory and unconstitutional infringement upon an individual's right to travel without interference, and an abuse of discretionary power as acknowledged by the New York State Court of Appeals. The Office of the Attorney General was reportedly receptive to Prospector's request of an investigation into the actions of the New York State Police, and a reporting mechanism has now been implemented for direct complaints of motorcyclist profiling. If you, or anyone you know, has been a

victim of motorcyclist profiling, Prospector encourages you to call him at (518) 239-4560 for assistance in filing a complaint. PROFILES OF AMERICA In recognition of Sturgis Bike Week, the U.S. Census Bureau posted the following daily “Profile America” feature: FRIDAY, AUGUST 12: BIGGEST MOTORCYCLE GATHERING - The small town of Sturgis, South Dakota hosts the world's largest gathering of motorcycles this week -- the 71st Sturgis Rally. Normally home to about 6,600, the town sees its population swell to some 350,000 during the rally. The idea began with just 19 riders taking part in racing and stunt events 71 years ago. Those attending are seeing races, trade shows, and thousands of bikes on display. Mostly, they will share their love of the sense of freedom their motorcycles give them, and take in the scenery of the Black Hills. There are 7.7 million motorcycles registered in the U.S., with California home to about every 10th bike in the country. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov. Profile America is produced by the Public Information Office of the U.S. Census Bureau. These daily features are available as produced segments, ready to air, on a monthly CD or on the Internet at http://www.census.gov (look for "Multimedia Gallery" by the "Newsroom" button). 6 MILLIONTH MOTORCYCLIST GRADUATES FROM RIDER TRAINING The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recently graduated its six millionth RiderCourse student, a milestone reached through the ongoing efforts of nearly 10,000 RiderCoaches at more than 2,000

training sites worldwide. "We have RiderCourses across the nation and around the globe, often during weekdays, and virtually every weekend of the year," said Robert Gladden, vice president of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, adding that a wide variety of MSF RiderCourses are available in every state to provide motorcyclists everywhere with lifelong learning opportunities. "From the Basic RiderCourse to a much more advanced day on the track, from standard motorcycles to scooters to threewheel motorcycles, from small bikes to large, we cover it all," said Dr. Ray Ochs, MSF director of training systems. In addition, the MSF collaborates with safety professionals worldwide. For example, the MSF is currently helping establish rider training in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The MSF works with all branches of the U.S. Armed Services to support riders in the military. And the Foundation also works with world champion road racers on trackbased programs that improve rider safety everywhere. "The MSF is still best known for its world renowned Basic RiderCourse, the best first motorcycle ride for any new street rider and the cornerstone of the MSF’s Essential CORE curriculum," said Tim Buche, president of the MSF. "We want all riders to start with the BRC, then continue their education with the Basic Bike Bonding, Street RiderCourses and more." Founded in 1973, the MSF is a not-forprofit organization sponsored by BMW, BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory and Yamaha to promote safety through rider training and education, operator licensing tests and public information programs.

Email Address: service@twhauling.com Tailwinds Hauling was started in 2011. Our principle business is the hauling, transport, or towing of motorcycles and specialty cargo (Cargo requiring careful handling during transport). In addition to motorcycles our trailer can accommodate trikes, ATV’s, golf carts, garden tractors, and other small motorized vehicles. Our specialty cargo transport typically consists of B2B transport of packaged products, supplies, and equipment, estate sale purchases, and trade shows and displays. Being a small and nimble company enables us to meet many different types of customer requests. Tailwinds Hauling is ran by me (Sean) and my wife (Denise).

When you call you will get one of us and we will work with you from there to take care of your hauling needs. Both my wife and I love to ride motorcycles. Denise rides a 2002 Harley Davidson Sportster while I ride a 1999 Harley Davidson Fatboy. As a result of my parents living up in Yarnell Arizona we get to do a number of trips up through that part of our state. In addition, my parents ride as well and we will typically hook up in Yarnell and proceed on to Jerome, Prescott, or wherever the road may take us. We are usually looking to enjoy the time with family and meeting new friends. It doesn’t hurt to also escape the Phoenix heatJ Whether you have a need for specialized hauling services or work for a company that may, feel free to give us a call at 623-463-2187. We will work with you to handle your hauling needs. Thank you for your time and we look forward to working with you. Sean & Denise Tailwinds Hauling

May’s Guest Safety Article by Stacey “Ax” Axmaker Director - Idaho STAR Motorcycle Safety Program You’ve seen them on the roads driving their cars, trucks, and SUVs. Talking on the phone, eating, making a grocery list, checking their Palm Pilot, reading their GPS, yelling at the kids, and maybe all of the above! How much of their attention is left for driving? I call this their ‘Bubble of Awareness’ – how large is the area that they are aware of and paying attention to? Maybe just to their front bumper… Now, how about us? How big is OUR

Bubble of Awareness? We have distractions, too. Two-way radios, keeping an eye on the other riders in the group behind us, the argument we just had with the boss/spouse/friend/etc., the distracting effects of heat, cold, wind, bugs, debris, etc. How much of OUR attention is being spent on the business of riding? Research has shown that in an emergency situation, we have between 2 and 3 seconds to react before something bad happens. The problem is that is takes about 3 seconds to judge, decide what to do, and then take that action. Now, I’m not a math whiz, but that seems like a problem to me…

What makes the difference is what happens during the 5-10 seconds BEFORE the emergency situation. If we can train our Bubble of Awareness to extend to 20 seconds ahead of where we are now, we can start to make some predictions and take actions that reduce our risk: Truck with uncovered load – predict debris – back off and be ready to slow/swerve/stop Driver up ahead going slowly and looking side to side – predict they are looking for an address and may turn suddenly – back off and don’t pass (they may turn left when you are trying to pass!)

Road curves out of sight – predict that beyond the bend is debris, a stalled car, deer, and/or a tighter turn – slow and select a lane position that allows you to see farthest around the turn There are dozens and maybe hundreds more. The trick is for us to get our eyes up and look well ahead. Identify those potential hazards, make predictions, and take action early. The best way to handle an emergency situation is to identify it and take action BEFORE it becomes an emergency.
