I'm back, but with not a lot to report. I will be leaving for Meeting of the Minds on the 26th and will have more to report on my return.

I do, however, have some good news, JohnnyD has agreed to run for Phoenix/Shadow Mtn. PAC officer. Thank you JohnnyD. The new profiling forms are out now, please, if you have been profiled or witnessed

your brother being profiled, fill one out and turn it in to JohnnyD. I can not stress this enough, if you have friends or neighbors who ride, please express to them the importance of membership in A.B.A.T.E of Arizona. The more members that we have, the more powerful we are.

There are approx. 163,000 M/C plates registered in the state. I know that not all of them are on two wheels, but these laws affect all of them.

The repeal of emissions testing in Arizona affected them too.

What is November 3, 2013? No it’s not hump day… Those are scheduled for Wednesdays. 11-3-13 is the ABATE of Arizona General Meeting and Elections for State Officer positions. Starting in August, Chapter Coordinators have been asking their members for nominations for State Officer positions. All State Officer positions require a 2 year commitment. I know that seems like a long period of time, but aren’t we all in this for the long haul? Really, 2 years goes by pretty quickly. Just think back to something that happened 2 years ago and how fast that time really passed. Currently we still have 4 State Officer positions that need filling; Secretary, Run/Event Coordinator, PAC, and Safety Officer. Eligibility for State Officer positions require that a person has held a Chapter Officer position for at least 1 year prior to being elected as a State Officer and is a current member of ABATE of Arizona. I know that nominations were closed September10, 2013, however at the bottom of each ballot there will be a line for a write-in candidate. A member with the above qualifications can be written-in as candidate and put in the position they are running for. The write in candidate must be present at the General Meeting and Election to accept the position or they must have given prior notice of their intent.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “Nobody will ever deprive the American people the right to vote except the American people themselves, and the only way they could do this is by not voting” I hope to see all members at the General Meeting and Election.

ABATE of Arizona is very unique. As a State MRO and member of ACMC we are afforded the privilege of voting in the Confederation. All ABATE Members by virtue of their ABATE membership are members of the Confederation. October 18-24, 2013 is Riot on the River. The event is held in Winkleman Flat, Az. about 80 miles from Mesa. Camping is included.

This is an 18 or older event. There will be bike games, 50/50 drawing, Raffle tickets, Venders and live music Friday and Saturday nights. Beer & Soda Pop only $1.00. Mixed drinks and food are also

available. Please come out and support your Arizona Confederation. After all you too are a member. Raffle tickets are $3.00 each. Prizes are; 1st place $500.00, 2nd place $300.00, 3rd place $200.00. You do not have to present to win. If anyone wishes tickets you may call me at; 480 628 6160.

I have some good news to report to all ABATE members. American Income Life Insurance Company, member benefits have gone up $500 from $2,500 to $3,000.

If you are a member of MMA and MRF, you will be eligible for all three policies.

Each policy has a $3,000 accidental death benefit for a total of $9,000. This is an excellent opportunity to obtain very inexpensive accidental death insurance coverage. This benefit is available just by joining ABATE of Arizona. Many Brothers & Sisters don’t have any life insurance, by joining and supporting each separate organization you are eligible for a $3,000 death benefit from each organization. This is a “win-win” opportunity, just by supporting motorcyclists’ rights and joining all three organizations, you can protect your families and provide for your beneficiaries.

Each member should be receiving a letter from American Income Life Insurance Company in the next few weeks. There is a yellow post card along with a return envelope. Please fill out the yellow card and place it into the postage free envelope and mail it back to the insurance company.

This 5 minute task will guarantee members their $3000.00 Accidental Death benefit. This is not a life insurance policy but it will provide coverage in the event of accidental death. Florida Study Shows Cars Cause Majority of Motorcycle Accidents In the last few years, motorcycles have become a popular mode of transportation around Orlando and it is common to see these two-wheeled vehicles on the highways and neighborhood lanes around the city.

In the last few years, motorcycles have become a popular mode of transportation around Orlando and it is common to see these two-wheeled vehicles on the highways and neighborhood lanes around the city. However, motorists often view motorcyclists as a nuisance and fail to give them the respect and space they need. When this happens, motorcycle accidents are often the result.

Since no quorum was achieved by 11:00 A.M., no meeting was held.

In 2010, the Florida Traffic Crash Statistics Report revealed that there were over 8,000 crashes involving motorcycles around the state that year. Over 7,400 injuries were sustained by motorcyclists, 376 cyclists were killed and 767 passengers on motorcycles died.

Motorists not paying attention

According to the Sun Sentinel, motorists feel that motorcyclists are reckless and motorcyclists feel that motorists aren't paying attention, thereby colliding with motorcycles. A study conducted by the University of South Florida's Center for Urban Transportation Research shows that motorcyclists have a point.

The study, which examined motorcycle accidents during a period of ten years, showed that drivers often fail to yield the right of way to motorcycles and driver distraction appears to be a major factor.

While there are many motorcyclists that cause their own accidents, motorists are responsible for the majority of crashes. In fact, the study reveals that motorists are found at fault for 60 percent of collisions involving cars and motorcycles.

It is important for motorists to understand that motorcycles have a place on Orlando's roads and building an awareness of the presence of motorcycles can be an effective way to reduce the number of bikers who suffer serious injuries each year. Some of the things that drivers should be aware of include: Motorcycles are smaller in size and therefore can be difficult to see - drivers should be aware of this around other vehicles, signs and buildings.

Always look twice before turning left or merging into traffic.

Avoid distractions in the vehicle such as a cell phone or food, which may prevent a driver from seeing a motorcycle.

Drivers should always alert motorcycles to their intention by using turn signals.

Motorcycles should always be given their own lane and space.

Motorcycles move and operate in a different manner than cars do. Motorists should educate themselves on these differences so that they understand why motorcyclists behave the way they do.

Seeking compensation

When a motorcyclist is involved in an accident with another vehicle, their risk of being severely injured or killed is great. This is not surprising since they only have their helmet and protective clothing to shield them from harm. As such, motorcyclists may lose income and incur thousands of dollars in medical debt.

If you have been injured by a motorist in a motorcycle accident, you should speak with a qualified and experienced attorney to understand what your legal rights are.

REGULATING MOPEDS AND SCOOTERS - WOULD YOU RATHER GET HIT WITH A SCOOTER OR A CROWN VIC?

Jay Jackson, Executive Director of ABATE of Indiana, recently convened a meeting to discuss the issues confronting legislators, police officers, insurance companies, motorcycle/moped dealers and riders. Key among the issues was licensing and regulation of mopeds and scooters.

At the meeting, we learned that most scooter crashes involve troubled adults who usually do not have insurance and do not have a license to drive a motor vehicle because of numerous vehicle infractions involving alcohol. If that is the case, do we really want to force these people back into cars and trucks?

Their history tells us they will continue to drive, and the court system in parts of the country are letting them out of jail faster than we can put them back in jail.

My question is: “if we regulate the scooter more than we do now, will the above scooter operators simply revert to driving a car because they are not as obvious in a car as they would be on a scooter without a plate”?

Presently, these drivers/riders with extensive history of alcohol/operating offenses can get on a scooter and get to where they need to go without causing much of a hazard to the rest of the traveling public. Of course the flip side is why would we ever make it easy for these types to ride scooters? Maybe because it hurts less when we get hit with the Vespa than it does with the Crown vic, particularly when they are going to drive no matter what.

Getting travel brochures advertising cruises and motorcycle trips to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, bring mixed emotions, especially this time of year. Here is why. I worked the night shift at a factory that manufactured fuel and water pumps for cars. It was during the Vietnam War. Of course there was much conversation as to the political issues back then. I worked with a guy one summer inspecting fuel pumps as part of our job. His name was Kenny Kays. When we got done talking about the war, we talked motorcycles.

Japanese motorcycles, British motorcycles, Harleys and so on into the night. He liked them all, and especially Cushman Scooters.

He predicted that when the war was over, cruise ships would be docking in South Vietnam with tourists and all would return to normal, so why don’t we just skip the war part.

In 1968, the draft was on and Kenny had definite ideas about the morality of the war. His philosophy was easy. As a conscientious objector, he was not about to shoot someone that he didn’t have anything against. If drafted, he was going to Canada. While I disagreed with his views about the war, I was impressed with his stand, especially in the land of the patriotic American Legions. And so off to Canada he went. Only after his WW II vet dad begged his return, did Kenny come back for the draft. While he was still a conscientious objector, he apparently did not give the right answers as he was drafted anyway and sent to the 101st Airborne to serve as a medic.

Kenny was on a hill in the northern part of South Vietnam when it happened. North

Vietnamese sappers killed seven of the 21 soldiers on the hill and wounded many others. Even though Kenny lost the lower part of his left leg, he dragged his comrades to safety and treated their wounds and shielded the more severely wounded from incoming enemy fire. For his bravery, this conscientious objector medic was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Sadly, he took his life years later, unable to cope with all that he had been through. Whenever I see advertisements for motorcycle trips in Vietnam, I think of Kenny’s prediction - and he was right.

We have all heard the old saying- but pay attention, as this one can cost you BIG time.

When you have been injured or suffered a personal injury loss, the law limits the time you have to file a claim so you should consult with us immediately. Problems occur when some feel their injuries are not severe enough to seek legal advice, but after time the extent of the injury becomes evident. If that happens to you, here are some basic time limits you must know.

Recently, we have been seeing more and more health insurance policies that have extreme limitations on coverage. Sometimes these policies will use the words “limited benefit” in the title, but most of the time they’re just called “health insurance” or “affordable health choices or benefits” or “basic medical” etc., you get the gist. The problem with these policies is that people have no idea how limited the coverage is unless they have to find out the hard way.

These policies are marketed as health insurance and are offered by a lot of employers, so logically, people think it is typical health insurance that covers the big stuff, like a serious illness. But that is not the case, these policies do not cover the number one element that we have always, at the very least, associated with health insurance - catastrophic coverage.

SNOOZE YOU LOSE - TIME IN WHICH TO FILE YOUR CLAIMS

For Indiana and Illinois, that time frame is two years from the date of incident for non governmental agencies and for claim claims against governmental entities it can be as little as 180 days in Indiana or one year in Illinois. In Ohio you have two years from the date of incident to file a claim including claims against the governmental entities.

Well summer ain't over yet and those monsoon rainy days were still upon us as we gathered at the FOE meeting room.

Lots of reports were given as our fearless leader Joe lead us into the meeting but kept blinking at Deb with a smile making us to think they must be lovebirds or something. School bus charm?

Mary K. has let us all know that there is a RTS system (request to speak system) instead of going down to the state capitol and using the kiosks its available 24/7 and you can enter your comments on pending legislation that the committee's can review.

Redbone reported that alot of things were taking place as the board of directors was going thru a few changes and reminded us all that all chapters must help out at Too Broke in order for us to all have fun. Our next BOD meeting is 10-6-2013 and is a open meeting for all to hear.

Safety tip of the day,,,drink lots of water when you ride,and yes Joe Silk beer is not all water,unless its bud lite lime yer favorite!Thank you Jeff Gorral and yer new gun for the minutes.

Big news for those of us still drying out from Too Broke for Sturgis a soon to be announced third weekend in June will be the new TBFS event to avoid the summer monsoons. Alot of us who have never ridden in the rain will like that including wetter then rats Jim Austin,Jim Hammond and Greg Cantor.Just to name a few that didn't have a cabin!

Its that time of year to nominate new officers and at our meetings ya better not pick that time to run to the bathroom as we all throw your name in when ya do!

We recognized Redbone and his wonderful wife Patty with ABATE's life member pins and patches and could not say enough of his and her's dedication and extreme generosity in putting on the spaghetti feed.Our stomachs thank you at every event you two cook at!!

Jim"Maverick" Clark spoke about the ARA progress in the riders program and noted that alot of bikers do not have a endorsement to ride.

Hey Jeff Larsen we missed you at this meeting dude you would have won a boatload of cash from the dollar jar. Just a reminder that you must be present to win. Mary K won the 50/50 darn it and had enough money to go bowling for two!

It was off to the Biker Bowl after the meeting a huge turn out for the coveted high scoring pin signed by all off us.

This years winner was Larry(five strikes in a row) Keim with a whopping 159. I knew we should have made him drink more beer. Cool bowling towels made by Todd were given away. Jesse he followed all your directions to a T,but we still missed ya! We think we can whoop any chapter in the state who dares shows their faces next year.Thats right its a bowl down towel cheering crowd!Bring your ringers we have ours!

High Country Chapter

Phoenix/Shadow Mountain Chapter

We had a good meeting. Our ballot for the new officers has at least one candidate for each position. Because the date we had tentatively set for the Moon Mullins run was the same as East Valley's Hard Ass Run, we had a vote and decided to ride with East Valley on their run and to have Moon Mullins in November, probably early part.

Charity won the 50/50.

Ernie pointed out in his safety tip that for those with allergies when you take medication for allergies you will tend to be more easily dehydrated, likewise if drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages (tea, coffee, colas, energy drinks, etc.), so be extra careful to drink hydrating beverages when riding in allergy season (water, Gatorade and Powerade types).

Southern Arizona Chapter Our August meeting was held on Saturday August 17th at the Kettle Restaurant at I-10 & Starr Pass in Tucson. Meeting was called to order at 9:00 AM

Attendance has been a little below average as many members are out of town on vacations. We hope attendance will begin to pick up as many of our winter visitors start coming back. The Pledge of Allegiance along with a moment of silence for fallen brothers & sisters was said.

There was a motion to accept the minutes and the Treasure’s report. We reported on TBFS and reported that the weather once again didn’t do any favors to our cause. The rain during the week and the forecast for the weekend kept many away from the event. Our profit margin was way down but at least it looks as though the event will turn a small Profit.

This will affect our various campaigns in the upcoming year but we will weather the storm.

Don reported that our little “drawing” raised a little bit for our chapter account.

We are actually in pretty good financial shape as a Chapter. We opened the floor for anyone to be nominated for the State Offices but sadly no one stepped up.

The Chapter is looking for members to step up for various positions for the upcoming year. Elections are coming up quickly. If you can help by taking on one of the positions please try and do so. We all need to pull together to make this work. We have several positions that are open for the upcoming year. It would be great if we had at least two nominations

for each office. This is a volunteer organization and more hands make easy work.

Next meeting will be Sat August 17th at the Kettle. The September meeting is on the 21st. I hope to see everyone there.

Yavapai Chapter

We had our meeting on a very rainy day in Prescott. Attendance was light, but thanks to those who sloshed in for our meeting. Deb Butitta was confirmed by a vote as the interim B.O.D. rep. The next meeting will be at the Drunken Lass on Oct. 13th at 11:00 AM. The membership ride scheduled for Oct. 6th got a name.

Our ride to the Grand Canyon Caverns is now officially called the “hasta la vista 2013 run.”

It should be great as much will be on Route 66.

Handi decided to throw in and run for PAC state officer. Good luck to Handi, as she definitely has the passion for just such an undertaking. A call for nominations for chapter officers was announced for the Oct. meeting. Well the rain has finally stopped, so I am going to stop writing, and go for a ride. And in closing, a big thanks go out to all the bikers who went to D.C. on 9/11, and big grin goes out to the 11 who showed up for million mooslim march scheduled for the same day.

ABATE Of Arizona, Inc. is a non-profit motorcycle rights organization that is dedicated to freedom of the road for all motorcyclists.

ABATE is a volunteer organization that fights discriminatory legislation aimed towards the motorcycling community.

ABATE's position is that all motorcycle riders have the right to choose not only the machine that they ride, but also the riding gear that they choose to wear or not to wear, (i.e. leathers, gloves, boots and helmets.)

ABATE promotes rider education for all motorcycle riders and motorcycle awareness for all automobile drivers.

"What could have been a one or two hour ride through” tied up Beltway traffic from early morning into the afternoon.

Newberry and Dennis Walsted had arrived at the Florida State Fair on Feb. 7, 2010. Denico and Griswold are members of the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club, while Newberry and Walsted belong to the Spirit Riders Motorcycle Ministry. Walsted said he was planning to "lead all the motorcyclists in prayer once inside the fair," but he and the others were escorted out once they paid for admission. Fair rules ban gang colors or signs, and members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told the quartet that they could not enter the fair while wearing vests with the patches indicating motorcycle club membership.

Co-founders Belinda Bee and Top Fuel Bill Williamson credited everyone who helped with the unprecedented success of this year’s ride, and promised another ride next year, “and every year for September 11.”

“Sending out a BIG Thank You to all who supported and cheered on the 2 Million Bikers to DC ride,” e-mailed Angel Richardson, a member of the NCOM Board of Directors who attended the hugely successful event; “We have a kick ass bunch of patriots!”

Tampa Bay Times reported that approximately 50 bikers from numerous clubs were turned away that day. In their subsequent lawsuit, the four accused law enforcement and fair officials of violating their First Amendment rights to freedom of association and religion.

Most of these policies max out coverage anywhere from $1,000 - $15,000 per year (but, you won’t find the maximum coverage amount listed anywhere in the policy). And good luck actually getting the maximum benefit because the coverage amounts are different for every service or procedure etc., and some services are not covered at all, so you would have to hit the maximum coverage in each specific coverage category in order to actually receive the maximum dollar amount benefit. And these so called “explanation of benefits” handbooks that I presume are supposed to actually explain something do nothing other than give you a massive headache. You’re better off focusing your time trying to understand 70,000 plus pages of the tax code than you are trying to understand the few pages of your health insurance policy. Whether or not this is done intentionally - you can draw your own conclusions.

However, if you have no problem paying for your basic annual doctor visits and checkups, and your main reason for having health insurance is in case you get injured or get a serious illness, then avoid these policies or only use them to supplement your major health policy or catastrophic policy. If you are trying to find a lower premium plan and just want catastrophic coverage, there are catastrophic plans out there that may be cheaper than a comprehensive medical plan, but will cover the big stuff.

In researching these BS policies, I have been trying to figure out who, if anyone, would actually benefit from having such limited health insurance. There might be some folks that would benefit, for instance, if you have ever skipped going to the doctor for your annual check-up because you could not afford the cost of the visit, then these policies can help get you better discounts for certain providers and maybe save the you a little money (emphasis on maybe).

Do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions - make sure your insurance covers what you think it covers. Call your state department of insurance if you have questions regarding your policy. MOTORCYCLIST FINED FOR TIRE TREADS A New York rider who set out for a Friday the 13th motorcycle trip to Port Dover, Ontario told local CTV News that he was unfairly ticketed and pulled off the roads by Waterloo Regional Police in Canada. Jeff Selby of Elmira, NY claims the officers were excessive in their punishment after a routine roadside check found the tread on his motorcycle tires was point five millimeters under code.

Selby says he offered to drive his bike straight to a repair shop to have the tire replaced but the officers said no. “He goes it doesn’t matter. Your bike will be off the road as of today. We’re gonna take your plate, we’re gonna charge you and you’re gonna have to get a tow truck.”

Selby told the news station that he understands the safety concerns but says he has a clean driving record and deserves a warning first, and that the five hundred or more dollars he’s now facing in fines, relicensing fees and towing cost is exorbitant. Police say the law is the law and you can’t put a price on safety, adding that when it comes to safety there’s no room for warnings or second chances and it’s their responsibility that’s on the line.

SIHK-ING HELMET EXEMPTIONS DOWN UNDER On April 23, 2013, Queensland became the fourth Australian province to exempt bicyclists from the Sikh community from wearing a helmet. Calling it a “common-sense approach,” Queensland transport minister Scott Emerson said, "By amending the Queensland Road Rules, we will join Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia which also have this exemption."

ACCIDENTS POSSIBLY LINKED TO BRAIN MISCALULATIONS Incidences of cars pulling out in front of motorcyclists run regularly in headlines -- locally, statewide and throughout the nation -- and there could be a scientific reason. Recent research by a Texas Tech University psychologist suggests that the regularity of this problem isn’t necessarily a case of poor driving or carelessness, but may be related to a basic human judgment error.

Pat DeLucia, the coordinator of the Human Factors Psychology Program, said her results show that small, near objects can appear farther away than larger, farther objects. The study is published in the peer-reviewed scientific psychology journal “Current Directions in Psychological Science.”

An interest in softball prompted DeLucia to study how the human brain perceives objects, their size and motion and an object’s time to impact. Her finding -- that an object’s size affects distance perception -- may be the basis explaining why car drivers miscalculate motorcyclists’ distance and speed.

Many times, the brain interprets objects with a larger retinal image as closer.

Since motorcycles are smaller than cars, DeLucia said the brain may use this shortcut to judge a smaller motorcycle farther away than it actually is.

This size-arrival effect can lead drivers to misjudge when a vehicle would arrive at an intersection and could be considered a contributing factor in motorcycle/vehicle accidents.

DeLucia hopes to find funding from the Texas Department of Transportation to create an educational program to inform drivers of her findings and reduce the incidents of these types of accidents.

HONDA TOUTS TECHNOLOGY TO CUT MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES Honda North America executives announced that the Japanese automaker hopes two experimental safety technologies it is testing could help reduce pedestrian and motorcycle deaths by the end of the decade. By equipping a car and smartphone with wireless dedicated short range communications technology, Honda said it can alert both a driver and pedestrian, or motorcycle rider, of an impending collision.

Vehicle-to-Pedestrian and Vehicle-toMotorcycle technologies are still in the early development and testing stages, but Honda intends to integrate the advanced collision sensing and predictive technologies into their vehicles through a special licensed radio band that allows cars to send and receive messages from surrounding vehicles.

The system that might be an app one day on a smartphone is capable of alerting drivers that a pedestrian or motorcycle is near, even if the driver can’t see them, in time to avoid a collision.

Jim Keller, chief engineer for Honda R&D Americas, Inc. said connected vehicle technology could be on the road by 2020, and the technology would be much cheaper than implementing cameras and other safety systems equipped on vehicles today.

Honda is one of eight automakers involved in a federal vehicle-to-vehicle communication study which began a year ago in Ann Arbor with the help of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and has been extended six months.

WEIRD NEWS: BLIND DISABLED MOTORCYCLIST SETS SPEED RECORD The dangers of riding a motorcycle are obvious even to able-bodied operators, yet blind, disabled Scottish biker Stuart Gunn threw caution to the wind by setting a new world record by clocking 167.1 mph.

Around 1000 Rebels MC members are making their way to Perth, bound for the gang’s Osborne Park clubhouse.

The Rebels are expected to make a brief stop over at Tammin, east of Perth, before arriving in Perth in the late afternoon.

The bikies arrived in Western Australian on Tuesday after crossing the Nullarbor, spending time in Norseman before travelling to the historic gold mining town of Kalgoorlie on Wednesday.

They stayed there overnight before continuing their journey on Thursday morning.

The run brings together chapters from across the country, led by national president Alex “The Maltese Falcon” Vella.

They have brought plenty of business to roadhouses and been met with the state’s biggest police presence since the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2011. ===========================

Each June, amongst the cornfields in Eastern Iowa, one of the largest two-day motorcycle events in the Midwest takes place. The small town of Anamosa, Iowa, with a population of approximately 5,500, is home to the J&P Cycles headquarters.

The motorcycle parts, accessories and apparel retailer hosts the annual J&P Cycles Open House Rally.

In commemoration of J&P’s 35th anniversary, the rally is going to be a three-day extravaganza held June 27-29.

Appearances by Sons of Anarchy stars Tommy Flanagan (who plays Filip “Chibs” Telford) and Ryan Hurst (who plays Harry “Opie” Winston) at the 2013 event were such a hit, Telford is coming back and will be joined by Mark Boone Jr. (Bobby Munson).

The 2013 two-day event held June 29-30 surpassed the 30,000 mark for visitors, and more than 20 different states were represented including, California, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania and New York.

J&P Cycles is aiming to hit and exceed the 35,000 mark for the 35th anniversary event, which should not be a difficult task because of the great entertainment and the hottest new products in the motorcycle industry displayed by more than 110 motorcycle vendors on site.

The J&P Cycles Open House Rally started out as a small Customer Appreciation Day to thank customers for their business throughout the year. Thompson’s first Bonneville competition was the 65th Annual Southern California Timing Association’s Speedweek event, held August 10-16. “We were plagued with electronic issues all week that kept us sidelined. With help from BMW Motorrad, Heads Up Performance, BMW of Utah and BMW of San Diego we made three runs on the last full day of competition with a top speed of 203 mph, to date, my fastest run on the Salt,” stated Thompson.

The BUB Speed Trials, a motorcycle-only competition was held August 24 through 29 on the wind swept Salt Flats.

Thompson became an official member of the BUB Speed Trials 201 MPH Club after posting a record two way average speed of 201.02 mph in the 1000cc MPS/AG class. Unfortunately, her record was surpassed later in the event “They say you don’t own a record, they are only on loan. It would have been nice if they loaned it to me for a bit longer” said a smiling Thompson

“Thanks to Scott Horner, Bob Clark and Steve Davidson, our BMW was performing much better at BUB as soon as it rolled-off the trailer. Even with the strong winds I achieved a long-time goal of joining the BUB 201 MPH Club here on the Salt,” stated Thompson. “I’ve taken my BMW over 200 mph multiple times, but it was always on paved tracks. Exceeding 200 mph on the salt at Bonneville is extremely gratifying due to the difficulty to achieve those speeds on the irregular, unpredictable surface,” added Thompson.

Thompson is also a member of the Mojave Magnum 200 MPH Club and Texas Mile 200 MPH Club. She set a personal best top speed of 212 mph on her BMW S 1000 RR during the March 2013

Cycle parts shall include alloy rims, telescopic fork suspension in front and a pair of rear shock absorbers. The new bike shall use a single disc brake set-up front and rear, with a plush looking riding saddle to support its rider and pillions.

Harley isn’t known to make compact motorcycles, and likewise the upcoming new Indian Harley will seat riders in cruiser motorcycle typical armchair comfort, a back upright riding position supported by feet-set-forward rider footrests.

The big plus to having a Harley manufactured in India is certain to be its price tag, which we are confident, shall be attractive, within the Rs 5 lakh mark, on-road in India. =========================== Senior Still Riding At 95

For the last 85 years, Steven Janicki of Roseville has been sailing down the highway of life on two wheels.

At age 10, he began riding motorcycles on his family’s in Bridgewater, N.Y. and as he approaches his 96th birthday, he still enjoys the thrill of the ride.

“Someone gave my brother an Indian Motorcycle,” he said. “One of the two cylinders was shot. He took that bad cylinder off and made it in to a one-cylinder and that’s what we rode around the farm. We got going too fast and too dangerously, so my dad said, ‘Get rid of it.’”

After moving to Detroit in 1939 to pursue a career as a tool and die maker, he competed in tourist trophy races north of Lansing.

Janicki joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1944 and was stationed at Horsham St. Faith Air Base near Norwich, England.

There he served as a dorsal turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber flying missions over Germany and France. He recalled encountering fierce anti-aircraft fire.

“Our engineer lost all of his hair, but it came back after the war,” he said.

Missions ended with a debriefing session where crew members given two shots of whiskey.

The Liberator’s 10-man crew came from all over the United States. Of the 10, only three are still alive.

When the war ended, Janicki finished his service as a mess sergeant on a base in Harlingen, Texas. “When we came back we were in South Dakota waiting around.

I was supposed to be on the B-29 but the war ended in Japan. That’s when they made me mess sergeant,” he said.

While there, he resumed his passion for riding by taking road trips to Mexico, visiting Monterrey and Mexico city.

After the war Janicki settled in St. Clair

MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2013 Shores where he raised three children with his wife Stephanie. Motorcycle riding became a means of transportation and recreation. On the weekends he would often ride to his hometown in New York to visit family and friends.

Over the years Janicki has owned a variety of motorcycles including Indian, Harley Davidson and Panther models. He currently rides a Honda Rebel because the motorcycles smaller size makes it easier for him to maneuver.

Since retiring at the age of 65, Janicki has enjoyed many years on the open road and plans to continue ridding as long as he is able. He frequently rides to meet friends at Eddie’s Drive In on Jefferson Avenue in Harrison Township. =============================

The Wild, Wild West – Betsy Reports Back From the Sturgis Rally

There is no place on earth that captures the feeling of the outlaw like the Wild, Wild West. Throughout the history of America, outlaws of one type or another have been drawn to the Black Hills of South Dakota. There is an energy in those dusty hills and plains that permeates all outer layers and seeps into the heart and soul of those who are drawn there. It would seem once you’ve experienced the magic of the hills, they call you back time and time again. Every year I go back, and I always have the overwhelming sensation of coming HOME.

I often hear the phrase, “What happens in Sturgis, stays in Sturgis." But it has been my experience that what happens in Sturgis opens my heart and soul to new possibilities. I fell in love on Bear Butte Mountain many years ago. He was the love of my life, although sadly he is no longer with us. But it wasn’t just him I fell in love with. I fell into a love of life, and learned to truly love myself in the purity and simplicity of the Black Hills.

We used to stay for the days after everyone else had left for home, and marveled at the quiet. I fondly remember rolling down the side of a hilltop that was covered with flowers and laughing like children. I remember picking those flowers and buying every candle left in town and

decorating a little log cabin and lying awake all night in the glow of those candles, talking about our innermost dreams, ideas, and desires. My heart is forever connected to that place where inhibitions are dropped and souls are bared.

What happens in Sturgis does not stay in Sturgis. It burns brightly inside of you for the rest of your days. The priceless friendships I have made and continue to make there every year are with men and women from all over the world who share a most fundamental love of all that is wild and free.

Each year I question what it continues to hold for me, and I contemplate not going, or heading out in new and different directions. My old bike is in need of some tender loving care, as are some other aspects of my life. Staying put and attending to details would be the more practical choice to make. But that would require choosing to be practical, which CLEARLY, Calamity cannot! I don’t even aspire to BE practical. Imagine a tombstone on Boot Hill saying, “Here lies Calamity Jane, she was a practical woman." She is buried next to Wild Bill, who she managed to tame with her practical ways.

It’s been years since I have even found my way into town to see Main Street, or the vendors on Lazelle. I go to the Black Hills to stay connected to that little girl inside of me, who might otherwise lose her way in a complicated world built around money and success. I go to stay connected to old friends of like mind, and in that process, many new ones find their way into my life and heart. I always return home with a renewed sense of who I want to be, and what I hope to tackle in the year to come.

With only five days to be in Sturgis, I joined in on a ride event every day, and somehow stayed out until the wee hours of every night. Never a dull moment in Sturgis, unless you want it that way, and you have to plan ahead if you want to find a quiet corner! From the moment I arrived, I was off and running, making use of every moment I had. Sunday was Michael Lichters ride and art exhibit. The ride was led as always by my pals Jay Allen and the one and only Sugar Bear, who is known for his amazingly long front ends on the choppers he builds.

The Legends Ride always gets the historical streets of Deadwood hopping and this was the first year they achieved maximum capacity for the amount of riders they could accommodate on the ride.

Organized by Woody (Bob Woodruff) of the Buffalo Chip, it raises generous funds for local charities like the South Dakota Special Olympics. Some of the kids from the Special Olympics came out to join in the fun, and meet the colorful motorcycle legends that turned out to show their support and lead the ride.

One of my favorite events is joining in on the Biker Belle festivities, although this year we missed the fine organization skills of its founder Meg McDonough.

None the less, I cherish seeing the strong woman who I look up to in the motorcycle world and hearing the panel of the women selected to speak. It’s also a chance to meet the newest and youngest women joining in on the sport. The ride has been picking up momentum, and I hope it continues to grow and bring this group of unique women together for a special day of bonding and some serious

girl power!

The ride raises money for “Helping With Horsepower” and “The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum”, and this year auctioned off many items including a new Harley Davidson customized by the bad ass builder Jessie Combs. The proud new owner of the classy white bike is none other than Chris Sommer-Simons, whose husband Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers outbid everyone, and said, “Happy Anniversary Honey”! We girls just LOVE that kinda stuff!

And last but not least, because you gotta save the best for last, right? All of the people involved in the Cycle Source ride are simply down to earth, real deal good peeps. And who doesn’t enjoy a motorcycle rodeo where you can ride wild horses, barrel race on a real horse or your iron horse, and watch all of your friends literally eat dirt? Come on, that’s the funny stuff dreams are made of!

Amid the noise and distractions, I always manage to have a few conversations where I walk away knowing that those words were meant to be exchanged. I talked with my buddy Chris Callen about how we have already lost so many people in our lives, and how important it is to tell the ones you love, just how much they mean to you, every chance you get.

You never know when it might be the last time that you see someone, especially when we all ride motorcycles like, well…………outlaws!

Even though I only see or get to talk to some of these friends once a year, knowing them has left it’s print on my soul.

Watching my friends ride the Wall of Death is always a highlight and the show is never the same twice. I like to show up and support the talent of guys who ride like crazy outlaws because they truly are living the life of the modern day outlaw.

Each of them wounded warriors, and yet the show always goes on. I love all of these guys like twin brothers of other mothers. I really do. We are all kindred spirits.

I never miss stopping in at Trevino’s leathers to visit my pals who have outfitted me over the years. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is where I get my fringed buckskin clothes, so here it is! My secret is shared! Both Trevino’s on 385 just outside of Deadwood, and Walter Leathers on Main Street are where many of my favorite old pieces have come from.

Bear Butte Mountain is the spiritual place where all nations of our native people come for prayer. It is a place that deserves the respect of all Americans and people who come from all over the globe to visit. It is a place where you can ask the Great Spirit to watch over everyone that you love, and the mountain holds those prayers sacred. I always leave a bit of time to spend alone there, and visit the part of my heart that remains there even when all of the motorcycles ride away. ============================= Royal Enfield To Build Cafe Racers

Safety Recall For ’09-’13 Kings Mountain-Designed Indian Motorcycles Indian Motorcycle announced that some legacy generation, Kings Mountain-era Indian motorcycles of model years 20092013 have a defect related to motor vehicle safety. The affected motorcycles — produced between December 10, 2008 and November 1, 2012 and designed by the previous owner of Indian Motorcycle, housed in Kings Mountain, North Carolina– may have been assembled using a defective rear wheel rim. The rim may crack and cause a loss of air pressure. This could cause the vehicle operator to lose control, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. The recall does not impact the newly launched 2014 Indian Chief motorcycles unveiled by Polaris Industries Inc. in Sturgis, South Dakota on August 3.

Indian Motorcycle has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about this issue and will provide notice to all registered owners of the affected Kings Mountain Indian motorcycles consistent with NHTSA regulations. Indian Motorcycle will also issue a Safety Recall Bulletin to all Indian Motorcycle dealers with instructions required to replace the affected rear wheel assembly. Repairs will be made by any authorized Indian Motorcycle dealer at no cost to owners of the subject motorcycles. The company will notify affected customers when replacement parts are available.

Consumers affected by today's announcement should visually inspect the rear motorcycle rim for cracks and check tire pressure prior to riding the motorcycle. If any cracks are found, the motorcycle should not be ridden until the rim is replaced. Affected consumers are also encouraged to contact their nearest dealer to schedule an appointment for the bulletin repair service when parts become available. While most of you know me, I wanted to give you some of my background that I believe makes me a good candidate for ABATE of Arizona State President.

I joined ABATE of Arizona in January 1998, after meeting Redbone, one of our charter members in the East Valley chapter. While I had rode my own motorcycle for over 15 years prior to that, I had no idea ABATE existed. I attended my first MRF Best of the West conference in Reno/Sparks NV in April 1999. I was fired up and enlightened about MRO’s, and soon became the East Valley Chapter Membership Officer and held that for a 3 years, setting up membership booths at many events. Then I served as the chapters’ secretary for 2 years. I am also a “bonette”, assistant to our resident chef, “Redbone”, and used my food service relations to get best prices from food vendors & helping at the food tent at Too Broke For Sturgis, back when we held it at Watson Lake.

Bellator has signed a sponsorship deal with Victory Motorcycles that will see its Victory Lane concept launch around the MMA promotion’s Sept. 7 season-opening broadcast on Spike. The branding concept centers on the fighter walkout area during events. While it did not pass, we made very good progress this year, failing with a mere 14-17 vote difference.

Wisconsin Law Allows Motorcycles To Drive Through Red Lights Under Certain Circumstances

MILWAUKEE — When John Glass of West Allis rides his motorcycle, he carries a copy of the state statute that allows motorcyclists to drive through a red light under certain circumstances.

Some motorcycles are too small to trigger the traffic sensors at intersections, so lawmakers passed a law in 2006 allowing those riders to ignore the red light as long

as they've waited at least 45 seconds and the intersection is clear, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported (http://bit.ly/17gDpoK ).

Motorcycle enthusiasts hope police remember that law this week, as thousands of Harley riders arrive in Milwaukee for Harley-Davidson's 110th anniversary celebration. Glass says officers don't always seem to know the law exists, which is why the 56-year-old carries a copy of it in his wallet.

Dean Bartosh of ABATE of Wisconsin, a motorcycle-rights group, agreed the law isn't widely known.

"It's a pretty big secret to a lot of people," he said. "There's a lot of motorcyclists that haven't heard of it. I've heard of instances where police don't know that, they've pulled people over, and they had to be informed themselves."

Most state-operated traffic signals, including meters at highway on-ramps, are triggered when a vehicle interrupts an electrical field at the intersections. The sensors don't always detect motorcycles

Joanna Bush, a state traffic-signal engineer, said workers can fine-tune a signal that doesn't detect motorcyclists.

"If they could notify us that there's a problem, we'd much rather create a situation where they're going through a green," Bush said.

Most sensors consist of a 20-foot-by-6foot loop beneath the pavement that has an electrical current running through it.

Motorcyclists and bicyclists have a better chance of triggering a green light if they're right above the loop.

Over the past three years, the state has begun moving toward signals that use video detection. Cameras "memorize" a background and trigger the signal to change when the background changes.

The technology, which is more common across southern Wisconsin, is better at catching motorcycles and bicycles, Bush said.

Mark Denico, Thomas Griswold Jr., Timothy Newberry and Dennis Walsted had arrived at the Florida State Fair on Feb. 7, 2010. Denico and Griswold are members of the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club, and were wearing patches on their motorcycle vests showing an American flag, an eagle and the word "Liberty." Newberry and Walsted belong to the Spirit Riders Motorcycle Ministry, and their patches depicted a crucifix, a crown, beams of light, wings and two white doves. Walsted said he was planning to "lead all the motorcyclists in prayer once inside the fair," but

I am starting the writing of my October column earlier than normal. Norma and I just recently got back from the Sturgis Rally and I wanted to write about it before I forgot what we did on our trip. I did not write anything down as we were traveling and when it comes to relying on just my memory that is one scary thought.

The last couple of weeks the weather has been cooler than normal. During the Sturgis Rally it was hard for the temperature to reach 80 degrees when normally the temperature is around 100 degrees during the rally. This year the rain and hail seemed to come into play each evening and when you are in the Hills it is very hard to see a storm coming and get out of its way. Luckily Norma and I were in the right place each time a storm came though and never got wet other than a few raindrops attacking us.

We left for Sturgis on Wednesday of Rally Week. We were pleasantly surprised on how green it was on the west side of the Missouri river. Normally this time of year the grass is really on the brown side in western South Dakota. We stopped at Wall for some food and we each had a hot beef with potatoes, bread, and gravy. Normally they have plain roast beef in a hot beef but this time it was barbequed beef and gave the hot beef a different kind of taste. I can still remember expecting a certain kind of taste in my mouth with the first bite I took and was really surprised when it had an unexpected flavor. We then rode through Wall and were surprised to see so few motorcycles parked on main street.

The ride from Wall to Rapid City had very light traffic which is really unusual during Rally week. We arrived in Rapid City about 5:00 in the afternoon and rode up to Black Hills H-D and saw thousands

In their subsequent lawsuit, the four accused Greco, the Florida State Fair and other fair officials of violating their First Amendment rights to freedom of association and religion.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington nevertheless dismissed the complaint without prejudice Tuesday because it failed to specifically indicate claims under the federal civil right law

Section 1983, which creates a private right of action for civil damages. The fair demonstrated that the "plaintiffs' naked reference to § 1983 is insufficient for defendants or this court to assume that they intended to bring [counts one through nine] under its rubric," according to the ruling.

"Plaintiffs may have identified constitutional rights alleged to have been violated, but have failed to allege causes of action associated with those violations," Covington added.

The judge also declined to give the plaintiffs an injunction restraining the defendants from "ordering, compelling, bullying, requesting, coercing, or threatening a member of a motorcycle club or motorcycle ministry to remove their vests with 'patches' on them signifying membership within a particu-

Afterwards we rode to Mindy’s home in Rapid City where we were staying during the rally. Mindy is Norma’s daughter and she has four great children plus a nice husband.

On Thursday morning we rode to Sturgis to see the sights and all the people. As usual vendors were everywhere selling their wares. We picked a spot on Main Street to park and then watched the bikers go by in about every type of motorcycle you could imagine. We saw Roger Wilson, who is a big shot with CMA, and he blessed our trike for us. Then we rode to Whitewood where ABATE was holding their Whitewood Social Hour. For ABATE members the soda pop and beer were free. Barbie was serving some great tasting food. Norma and I shared some super nachos which were quite tasty.

Then “Hardtail” spoke to us about concerns in the motorcycle rights world. We need more congress people to support HB 1861 which will repeal government funding for motorcycle only check points which by the way is unconstitutional to do anyhow. Jiggs and I were interviewed by a local Rapid City TV station on which we spoke about some of the things ABATE is doing to promote motorcycle safety. Then we rode back to Rapid City and ate some “Papa Murphy’s” Supreme Pizza at Mindy’s home.

On Friday we spent the morning visiting with Mindy’s family. We rode to Keystone and went on the road which goes along the 1880 train route to Hill City. It is an unknown route and very scenic to ride on. There were hundreds of bikes parked on the Hill City main street which was closed off to traffic other than motorcycles. We ate at Café

16 which is a 50’s style restaurant. We were served a malt in a big and tall glass.

The part of the malt that couldn’t fit into your glass was served to you in the stainless steel container that the malt was made in. Just like they did in the good old days! We then rode north on highway 385 until a big rain cloud in the west forced us to ride back to Rapid City.

Mindy’s family had gone camping so we had their home to ourselves.

On Saturday morning we rode to Sturgis via the Nemo and Vanocker Canyon roads which have a lot of curves and some great views along the way. We parked in Sturgis and again watched the bikers ride down the streets showing off their rides.

We met a couple from Australia who said they come to Sturgis every five years and this was their fourth visit. They were very interested in how much we liked our Harley trike. They said there are very few trikes in their country as they have a hard time in getting them licensed there.

We also met some bikers from Denmark that had their bikes shipped to the USA. They have those big license plates that are about a foot square. We then rode to Deadwood and to Spearfish via highway 85 and then took the Spearfish Canyon road back to Lead and rode to Rapid City via 385. We rode into Rapid City via Sheridan Lake Road which is another seldom used road which has a lot of beauty.

On Sunday we rode home and we stopped in Wall for breakfast it was 58 degrees. By the time we got to Pierre it was a warm 88 degrees. We want to thank the Lord for a safe journey and an enjoyable vacation.

part the weather was extremely hot and humid. We rented a golf cart for a couple of days and enjoyed meeting old friends and making a few new ones. We ate some lamb chislic plus a lot of other goodies. We watched the pedal tractor pulling that some kids were doing. It was interesting to watch their reaction when some of them didn’t do very well. I had a nice visit with Senator John Thune.

When Norma and I were getting married we sent Senator Thune and his wife an invitation to our wedding. He wasn’t able to attend the wedding but he did send us a silver plate from the US Senate.

I also visited with Rep. Kristi Noem. I discussed HB 1861 (A bill to repeal the government funding of motorcycle only check points) with her and she said she was not aware of the bill. I asked her about renewing her membership with ABATE and she said as a congresswomen she was advised not to join any such organizations. There are hundreds of requests for her to join organizations such as ours and it is almost impossible to join them all. But she did say that anything she could do to help ABATE she would be more that willing to do. A few days ago I got a call from Kristi’s office in Washington, DC and I was told that Kristi had joined the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus Group and that she was interested in co-sponsoring HB 1861. I will keep you in the loop concerning HB 1861.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports that according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) using ethanol blends of 15% ethanol in any vehicle that is not a passenger vehicle will be in direct violation of Federal law. The EPA has issued a list of possible plans to mitigate mis-fueling issues with the recently approved E-15 ethanol blends. Prior to E-15, the highest blend

The Motorcycle Awareness Program (M.A.P.) is an educational program aimed at the target audience of high school students in driver’s education classes. There has been a small group of instructors who have volunteered to present the M.A.P. to students throughout the state. But, we need more instructors.

Remember, that ABATE stands for EDUCATE. Our purpose is to spread the word about safe motorcycling and promote a positive image of motorcyclists.

What better way than to speak to the future drivers of our state. The students hopefully, will not only be better equipped car and truck drivers but will also be more aware and watch out for us.

The MRF has been informing the EPA that the higher blend will be forced upon motorcyclists because of the remaining fuel in the hose from the previous customer. The EPA then said that a 4 fourgallon minimum purchase would be required by everyone. That was rolled back and an EPA document specifically mentions the work of the motorcycle rights organizations in the overturn of the mandatory minimum.

From the EPA: "However, groups representing motorcycle owners and lawn mower manufacturers objected to this configuration because their products have gas tanks that are normally two gallons or smaller. In response to these concerns, Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) developed and proposed a new configuration for EPA approval that retail stations may use as an alternative to the currently

approved configurations."

The solutions provided by the EPA is to label the pumps with attention getting labels that you are about to pump E-15 into your vehicle. Or purchase new blender pumps that only carry about .3 gallons or have a new pump with a dedicated E-15 hose. The first solution won't work and the second two solutions are too expensive.

To become an instructor you must:

Be available during the day: The presentations in the high school driver’s education classes last about an hour during the school day. There may be as many as 5 classes in one day.

Be willing to stand up in front of a group of about 30 high school students and speak: That sounds easier than you think. You need to be able to gently maintain control of the group.

Know the material being presented: There is an outline for all presenters to follow so there is uniformity in the material presented.

Commit to teaching at least 2 classes per school year: We hope to have at least one volunteer instructor in each ABATE Chapter. That person will attend and instructor class (about 4 hours), attend a M.A.P. with an experienced instructor, teach a class with an experienced instructor in attendance.

When the new instructor is comfortable and the experienced instructor assesses him/her to be ready the new instructor may begin teaching alone. The mentor program assures that everyone is teaching the same material and everyone has support.

There has been a lot of talk about the EPA forcing everybody to use E-15 fuel in their vehicles. They were actually going to make it a law that everyone had to use at least four gallons. I don’t know if they meant every time you filled up or a year or what. But the Scary part (Happy Halloween!) is just how they were going to enforce that. Were they planning to have the EPA SWAT Team watch everybody? (Doesn’t sound too farfetched these days does it?) Or were they going to make every gas station in the country Pump out four gallons of E-15 before letting you get the better grade.

Anyway, The EPA got an earful from MRF, AMA , State MRO’s and a lot of other groups and gradually came to the realization that just isn’t going to work.

There is a lot more to this statement that covers how motorcycles and small engines aren’t able to handle the higher blends but until the aforementioned MRO’s got involved they hadn’t even considered that.

You know? I have a suggestion. Why don’t you just let the farmers grow food and help the estimated 1.5 million starving people in this country? Just a thought.

The Twisting of Data in Helmet Safety Studies

Extensive research has been done on the safety of motorcycle helmets. The most famous study of all, the Hurt Study Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures, shows no question that a helmet protects the head, reducing injury severity. The main question that researchers want to answer is whether the likelihood of neck injury is more significant than the likelihood of a helmet saving the riders life.

Helmets Statistically Reduce Head Injuries, But they Don't Save Lives

The same data that was used in the Hurt Report was also used in another paper

by Dr. Jonathan P. Goldstein, Ph.D. His analysis showed some facts that the Hurt Report overlooked. Although the data showed that motorcycle riders wearing helmets suffer from fewer head injuries, it failed to elaborate on what that really means. Helmet use had little significance in saving lives given that an accident had occurred.

What does that mean? It means that those who do crash are rarely saved by their helmets. Their head injuries are less severe, but they die anyway. In accidents where the rider died, it made no difference if the rider wore a helmet or not. That's not exactly a rock solid argument in favor of helmet wearing.

The truth is that speeding and alcohol use are the biggest cause of motorcycle crashes. Those taking part in these risky behaviors are less likely to wear helmets in the first place. Helmet wearers tend to have fewer crashes and less severe head injuries because they take fewer risks.

I met my late husband of 25 years, Jim Lewis, right after moving to California, and continued riding for many years. While working for Rider Magazine I toured quiet a bit in the USA and Europe, but my real passion was always off-road riding…the San Bernardino Mountains and Baja. I LOVED riding in Baja. My husband knew the roads, the trails, the ranchers that had gas and the dives with the best tacos. Those were great riding days for me.

Then it all stopped. Work, travel and launching several start-up companies took

fatalities among helmet wearers.

Neck Injuries Probably More Likely

In light of the shaky evidence in favor of helmets, we must look at the evidence against them. Although motorcycle helmets protect the head, they tend to do so at the expense of the neck. The Hurt Report concluded that neck injuries were lessened by helmet use. How is it that Dr. Goldstein came to the opposite conclusion? Why does he say that helmets can lead to moderate or even severe neck injuries for the rider wearing the helmet? The reason for the discrepancy is not clear.

Riders report that the weight, shape and composition of the helmet all put undue force on the neck. The physics of the helmet itself can cause neck fractures during a crash. This makes Dr. Goldsteinís findings more in line with the real world experiences of many riders.

Accident Speed is Important

The speed of the helmet striking the ground makes a difference in the occurrence of neck injury. Statistics show that a helmet has to be moving at least 17 mph in order to cause a significant injury. Since most motorcycle accidents happen at just over 20 mph, there is a good chance that the helmet can cause neck damage in most accidents. Thicker helmets can cause more severe neck damage than thinner helmets because they are heavier and bounce back harder than the lighter helmets. Add to that the fact that even the best helmets are only rated up to 13 mph and a serious question becomes apparent. Is a helmet

strong enough protection to make up for the increased risk of neck injury?

The Real Danger

Even the Hurt Report shows that aside from risky behaviors like speeding and alcohol use, rider inexperience causes most motorcycle accidents. Riding safety instructors drill it into riders' heads: Motorcycle riding is dangerous. Not only could it kill you, it probably will.

Only when riders understand the severity of the danger will they be as alert and defensive as they should in their riding practices.

Dr. John Adams at London University did a study that showed a strange increase of fatalities in states that enacted helmet laws. He theorizes that helmeted riders took bigger risks because the helmets made them feel safer. They believed they were protected by the helmet. Sadly, that would only true in lowspeed collisions. Until rider education succeeds in making every motorcyclist terrified of dying on the road, motorcycle deaths will continue to be common.

Helmet Makers Worsen the Risk

In his paper, Public safety legislation and the risk compensation hypothesis: the example of motorcycle helmet legislation, Dr. Adams noted the extensive propaganda surrounding motorcycle helmet sales. Ads encourage riders to feel safer when wearing a helmet. The problem is that people tend to be less cautious when then feel safe, leaving them more vulnerable to danger. Motorcycle riders should never feel safe. Riding is a dangerous activity that requires a consistently high level of attention and appre-

A few years ago I was driving up Highway 1 and the drive triggered a flood of memories of riding a bike on that road so many times in the past. Then it occurred to me – I’m retired, I have time, I have my health – why am I not doing this road on a motorcycle?? Immediately upon my return, I purchased a BMW 800ST. However, it sat in my garage for several weeks – I was too petrified to ride it. It had been such a long time since my last ride, and even when I did ride, it was mostly off-road. My thinking? Street bikes were too dangerous! I immediately took the MSF Basic RiderCourse, The Streetmasters Precision Cornering worshop at Willow Springs and promptly put

10,000 miles on my BMW the first year – mostly solo. I have since added a BMWG650GS dual-purpose bike to my collection and plan to go adventure riding soon. I have been amazed to learn in my long absence the huge influx of women riders…and that there is actually riding apparel designed specifically for women!!

Motorcycling had come a long way during my absence.

I recently rode for 3 weeks in Nepal with a German group of 8 on a Royal Enfield this past fall, and I am riding The Golden Triangle in Thailand this coming fall. The best part of coming back to motorcycle riding is the people. It was the same when I was riding as a young woman, and it’s the same now that I’m rediscovering

Helmet Laws Don't Work

Dr. Adams' paper had some more interesting statistics to offer. The report revealed one anticipated outcome: when states repealed motorcycle helmet laws, fatalities rose. Unexpectedly, however, fatalities rose by an even greater degree in states where helmet laws remained intact. It's not clear why those fatalities rose so much. However, it is clear that a lack of helmet legislation made riding a motorcycle less dangerous.

Motorcycle Insurers Encourage Helmet Use

Insurance companies tend to side with the helmet makers, because those who wear helmets tend to have fewer crashes. Insurance companies see that correlation as a factor in rating policies.

Motorcycle insurance companies donít pay for rider injuries anyway, so they put the focus on where it belongs...preventing crashes in the first place.

It's Up to You

Barring a helmet law, helmet use is a personal choice. Statistics show that if you are a responsible rider, you probably are wearing a helmet. Whether that helmet will save your life is anyone's guess.

Whether it will instead cause a debilitating neck injury cannot be known.

Whether you choose to ride with a helmet or without, be sure to take a safety course first, don't speed and don't drink while riding. Those actions will clearly keep you safer...the helmet? Who knows?
