ABATE of AZ. 7509 N. 12th St, #200 Phoenix, AZ 85020
Hello everybody, I'm back with another report.
As you are reading this in Oct., I left for Meeting of the Minds in Kansas City, Mo. on 23 Sept and will be bringing back as much knowledge and information as I can. And of course have a great time meeting new people. I will share all that with you in the next issue.
We are still gathering information on street light and left turn arrows that are not tripped by motorcycles.
Now for my rant, I would like to correct a miss conception. I have heard too often that ABATE is for Harley riders. Well that just isn't true, it's for all motorcyclist no matter what you ride. Whether you ride a metric or an American bike we are fighting for your rights to ride without being harassed by law enforcement for no reason or being forced by those that don't ride to wear a helmet, or being told by the government that you can't work on your own motorcycle or put after market parts on your bike. These things are already happening in other states If we do not want that kind of crap forced upon us
we all need to stand up and be counted. You ask how can you do that.
Well it's simple join one of the State Motorcycle Right Organizations (SMRO). You have your choice of two for Independent riders A.B.A.T.E. of Az. (the American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education) or the M.M.A. (the Modified Motorcycle Association). Please join one of these groups because right too few people are carrying the load for everybody that rides, We need your help. As always keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down and watch out for cars that aren't looking out for you. With Much Love and Respect V.M.Grady Designated Lobbyist for ABATE of Az.

S&S Cycle is pleased to announce they have added Paul Devine to their management team as Vice President of Sales. Steve Iggens, President of S&S Cycles says, “Paul brings a wealth of experience and the skill-set required to keep S&S Cycle moving forward and to maintain our leadership position in the v-twin high performance market.”
Hello Fellow Freedom Fighters!
Everyone that lives in the Valley O’ the Sun is looking forward to temperatures dropping below 100 soon! There are so many motorcycle events in the fall, you can’t possibly do them all. Please consider supporting A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona events when you can. October 4th is East Valley Chapter’s 13th Annual HARD ASS RUN, October 18th is High Country Chapter’s Chili Cook Off in Star Valley. (FMI, see flyers in this issue) ACMC’s Riot on the River (ROTR) campout/fundraiser will be held October 17-19th at Winkleman Park. Too Broke For Sturgis 2014 was only successful for us because of the 30+ motorcycle clubs and riding associations that attended. PLEASE show mutual support by attending Riot on the River. Like Too Broke is for us, ROTR is their once a year fund-raiser.
A.B.A.T.E.’s Annual membership meeting & Board of Directors elections are Saturday, November 1st, 11am-3pm at the Arizona American Italian Club, where the A.B.A.T.E. Phoenix office is located. We will have a guest speaker, bike games, kids games, silent auction, plus A.B.A.T.E. and TBFS merchandise for sale. We’re looking for donations for the auction. Please get them to your B.O.D. rep or Jean Cooper. (See flyer in this issue.)
Your 2015-2016 B.O.D. election ballot is in this issue. You may cut it out and mail it in, or give it to your B.O.D. rep at the next chapter meeting to hand deliver, or bring it yourself to the Annual membership meeting/BOD elections. Additional copies will be available at the annual meeting.
Chapter officer elections are to be held during the 4th quarter of the year. Consider taking an officer position. They’re only one-year positions. Volunteerism and its’ results are what YOU make it. Some put a lot of effort
into it, others put in a little. What’s important is that we ALL make SOME effort, or we will lose our rights without a fight. I know there are some officers out there that are burnt out. Please don’t abuse your volunteer officers. Give ‘em a break and step up to the plate! It truly is rewarding and a great way to meet new people.
The Too Broke For Sturgis committee is already working on TBFS 2015. We are currently accepting volunteer members onto the TBFS committee. Volunteers should expect to attend monthly meetings (Wed./Thu. nights) at the A.B.A.T.E. Phoenix office, and work during the event. Interested members, please contact Mike Schneider, A.B.A.T.E. State Vice President and TBFS Committee chairman at mike@squarepegpromos.com
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is hosting Meeting of the Minds Sept. 25-28, 2014 in Kansas City, MO. I’m proud to say that four (4) A.B.A.T.E. State Officers will be attending, and a new member from East Valley Chapter. Like so many other non-profit orgs, The MRF is struggling financially right now and implementing austerity measures to keep afloat. Any financial assistance you can give will be appreciated. At minimum, maintain a membership with the MRF. www.mrf.org
I was fortunate to be able to take a week of vacation in September. My partner Smiley and I rode our motorcycles to Sturgis, SD. Yea, I know the rally was in August. We’re not much for 500,000+ crowds. The first week of September was the perfect time to go, because they got snow the second week of September in South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming! The weather around Sturgis is crazy. It changes drastically day-to-day and even hour-tohour.

I am blown away by the company’s 56 year history of innovation, its talented and dedicated team, and the unsurpassed quality of its products. Over the coming months, I look forward to meeting our customers, dealers, and distributors. 2014 Cannonball Motorcycle Endurance Run
The 2014 Cannonball Run is an endurance test of motorcycles built prior to 1937 that started at the Daytona Beach Resort in Daytona Beach Florida on September 5th. The riders started to assemble on the beach at 8:30 AM for a group photo. They started the 3,938 mile ride to Tacoma Washington at 10:00AM and are scheduled to arrive there on September 21st. The Run was started in 2010 and is held every other year so the 2010 and 2012 events are in the books and the 2014 ride is making history as well. Taken from the official Cannonball website are the RULES of the Ride:
These machines are old and most are very rare. A lot of these early bikes would not be on the road today were it not for new parts. In a lot of cases only the motor survived to be resurrected into its former self. As long as the engine in your machine is original then its eligible to run for the prize. Any reproduction chassis or parts should be as they were originally.
BRAKES........We are all aware that 100 years ago brakes were not that good. If in any way you can improve your braking ability, to the point of even adding a front brake, then it is highly recommended. CARBS AND MAGS......The original carbs, whether modified or updated some, need to be used, spares allowed. If your magneto isn't rebuilt you should consider it. We want each bike to use it's intended ignition source, spares allowed.
THE TIRES........Well, the tires are very important. The argument for or against the safety of clincher tires has long been a debate. If you don't want to run clincher rims and tires, then you don't have to. Spares allowed.
LICENSE AND REGISTRATION......... Each machine, like any other motorcycle on the road, will need to be registered and licensed. The rider also needs to have auto liability insurance as well as a drivers license. Riders come from all over the world to be part of this, they have support teams and fans I do know some of the people riding like the Team American Iron made up of Buzz Kanter, Chris Sommer Simmons, Pat Simmons and Paul Ousey.
Some of the people following the riders are Michael Lichter who will also be photographing the event. Others report-

ing will include but not limited to Felicia Morgan and Bean’re and there is also Vickie Sanfelipo of Accident Scene Management who is a nurse. This is the first time to my knowledge that there was a nurse as part of the ride.
There are many other riders and people taking part in this adventure and more information about who they are as well as other information can be found on the official Cannonball website http://www.motorcyclecannonball.com/ -

Association’s 28th Annual World of Speed event September 6 -9 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover Utah. Thompson has been in Utah for a month to compete in the three most prestigious land speed racing events held at the famed Salt Flats, including Speed Week, the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials and World of Speed. Speed Week was canceled due to heavy rains. Weather and track conditions during the Motorcycle Speed Trials prevented Thompson from setting a new record despite making a strong 203.77 mph pass.
Thompson’s patience paid off during the World of Speed event where her BMW Double R was fast right out of the trailer. Six out of eight of Thompson’s passes were over 200 mph. On her last run of the event, Thompson enjoyed her best speed on the salt with a first pass at
209.85 mph and a return run of 207.71 mph, setting a new MPS-G 1000 record at 208.81 mph. The new record earned Thompson life- time membership in the prestigious Red Hat Club, recognizing her 200+ mph performance. “I’ve wanted the 200 MPH Club Red Hat since I started racing on the salt, so it’s an awesome achievement for me. I can’t thank my team enough for their outstanding fight to the end. Ray Garcia did an incredible job of making all the right calls on the bike’s set up. Now I can focus on setting more records and going faster with the Red Hat,” added an ecstatic Thompson. According to USFRA secretary, Ellen Wilkinson, more than 150 teams pre-registered for the event, which was cancelled last year due to rain. “This was my first time racing at an USFRA sanctioned

Hello brothers and sisters.
At our last meeting we discussed our up coming elections. I'm hoping that our members step up and get involved. Perhaps even taking on an officers position themselves. New faces with new ideas are always helpful.
We also continued talking about our plans for the Chilli Cook Off, which is coming up Oct. 18th at The Spur Bar in Star Valley. The Spur is adding an extra $100 to the prize for the winning chilli. So if you make a mean chilli come on up and join in the fun. Labor Day weekend many of us went to

CONGRESS EXTENDS HIGHWAY TRUST FUND Acting hours before the government was set to cut payments to states for highway and mass-transit projects, Congress engineered a $10.8 billion short-term funding patch to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent through next May.
Following several delays, the Senate approved a House-drafted highway bill just ahead of a midnight August 1st deadline to keep federal money flowing even though the HTF has nearly exhausted its reserves because fuel taxes haven't kept up with spending. The federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon, which helps finance the trust fund, has remained unchanged since
M.M.A.'s Camp N Jam. They put on a good event. Everyone seemed to be having a great time partying, dancing and playing in the people and bike games. I got into a few of the activities and really had fun.
I would like to ask you all to keep a brother of mine in your hearts and prayers. Bruce Knight was involved in a severe motorcycle accident due to deer on the road, while he was leaving the event. He has had several operations and will require several more. While riding in the High Country just be mindful of our wildlife population. You don't want to meet them by accident. I can't stress that enough.
Our High Country Chapter meetings are held on the third Sunday of every month, 10:00am at the Moose Lodge in Star Valley. I invite you all to join us. But the issue is far from resolved, as lawmakers failed to reach a long-term solution to pay for federally funded transportation projects and gives President Barack Obama occasion to promote his ideal transportation measure; the “GROW AMERICA Act”; a $302 billion four-year surface transportation reauthorization proposal which happens to include a push for mandatory motorcycle helmet laws nationwide:

The shift to “autonomy” has already begun. Cameras, radar sensors and tiny computers let a growing number of new models park themselves, brake automatically, or take the wheel when drivers stray from their lanes. Think of it as cruise control that navigates, and never gets tired or distracted.
Automakers are just getting started…advances likely in the next few years: brighter headlights that’ll double as sensors to gauge following distances and detect obstacles ahead; software with artificial intelligence to control the car and anticipate other drivers’ actions; new cameras capable of “seeing” lane dividers through snow or fog.
Though fatalities are on the decline, 30,000 people still die in accidents each year, mostly caused by human error.
MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2014 While not foolproof, safety advocates believe electronics and software can slash accident rates, and fewer accidents and less damage will lead to lower insurance premiums.
Traffic experts also predict an economic boon, as autopilot software lifts productivity by allowing workers to do more while commuting, can keep older workers on the job longer, and lets more people work farther away by making long commutes less tedious as the car does most of the driving and coordinates with other self-driving cars to avoid traffic jams even in congested environments. Lest motorcyclists feel left out of the mix, Google recently requested permission in California to test riderless motorcycles on public roads. A prototype motorcycle that balances and steers without a rider has already been built by Google engineers. SPLITTING CONTROVERSY California is the only state in the nation that does not outlaw the practice of lanesplitting, in which motorcyclists use the space between lanes when traffic is slow or has stopped. Though not “legal,” neither is the practice illegal, and until now the California Department of Motor

Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol were encouraging riders to do it safely and recently even published online guidelines for safe tactics to minimize the risk of accident. But now the CHP has come under fire from a state employee who charged the police agency had exceeded its authority by recommending lane splitting. The Office of Administrative Law agreed, and told the CHP to take down the guidelines, now removed since July 7th.
Since the CHP’s decision to remove the guidelines, motorcycle safety experts and motorcycling organizations have stepped up to voice their concerns about the future of lane-splitting, which supporters contend decreases traffic and helps motorcyclists’ avoid overheating, and increases rider safety by reducing the number of accidents involving motorcycles hit from behind while stuck in traffic jams. AUSTRALIAN “BIKIES” SCORE TAXPAYER-FUNDED WAR CHEST Queensland ‘bikies’ will have nearly $180,000 in taxpayer money to fight the state’s tough criminal motorcycle gang laws after a landmark High Court decision ordering the South Australian government
to pay the Mongols MC $178,000 in legal costs after losing a high-profile court battle four years ago to banish gangs from its borders.
Bikie sources told the Gold Coast Bulletin that the money would be tipped straight into the bid to challenge the Vicious and Lawless Association Disestablishment laws pushed through by the Newman Gov’t. After covering legal bills, any remainder would go into a “fighting fund” to challenge similar laws being used in Queensland and NSW. In 2010, SA’s so-called “bikie gangs” -including the Finks, who later became the Mongols -- formed a united front to challenge the state’s anti-association laws in the High Court.
The High Court ruled the laws obliged the state’s courts to impose control orders on bikies at the request of the AttorneyGeneral and police, without any evidence. It dubbed the legislation “constitutionally repugnant” and said it undermined the independence of judges and forced them to find guilt “based on assumptions.”
MOTORBIKERS IN NORTH KOREA ORDERED TO PARK TO SAVE FUEL
Join A.B.A.T.E.
PAGE 5 It is no secret that North Korea suffers chronic shortages of fuel, but now the scarcity has claimed a new class of victims: motorbike riders. Following a drop in oil imports from China, North Korean authorities have cracked down on private motorbike use in order to conserve fuel for military and government officials.
The new restrictions come just as motorbikes have been emerging as the next stage in the evolution of vehicular transport in North Korea, much as they had in other parts of Asia decades ago. Motorcycle ownership is widely considered a status symbol in North Korea, where most people still travel on foot. Many motorbike owners supplement their income by using them as taxis.
The restrictions could not be independently verified and have not been reported in North Korea’s own state-run press, but the DailyNK website specializing in North Korean news said the restrictions ban private motorbike use except in the morning commute and at night, and that violators risked confiscation of their vehicles.

Even before the new restrictions on motorbikes, riders faced hazards peculiar to North Korea’s authoritarian system -long-distance travel permit requirements, decrepit roads, an unpredictable blackmarket for gasoline and petty corruption among the police including stopping motorbikers just to extort their gasoline.
BOOBYTRAPS FOUND ON OFFROAD TRAILS Federal authorities in Arizona are warning off-highway-vehicle riders to be wary of trails in the Coconino National Forest near Happy Jack, Ariz., where trail riders have reported the tires of their all-terrain vehicles and off-road motorcycles were punctured by rebar spikes, sharpened and partially buried in trails heavily used by responsible enthusiasts and their families.
No injuries have been reported, but the sabotage endangers riders, hikers and even animals.
"The end of the rebar has been flattened and sharpened to a point, and the exposed point has been painted to blend in with the road surface," Mogollon Rim District Ranger Linda Wadleigh said in a statement. The rebar was placed in areas frequented by off-highway vehicles, but "The objects pose a serious threat to everyone, and that doesn't just mean people recreating on a motorcycle or OHV, it includes people walking, hiking and even wildlife. We are taking this very seriously and asking the public to keep an eye out and report suspicious activity in the area."

STURGIS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2014 The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community, and The Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizes the commitment and sacrifices individuals across the nation, and world, have made to protect the rights of motorcyclists.
For 2014, Deb “Tiger” Chandler was recently inducted into the Freedom Fighters HoF in ceremonies held August 6th at The Lodge in Deadwood during Sturgis Bike Week: “In partnership with the Colorado Confederation of Clubs (CCOC), she assumed the role of Colorado Commander of the Coalition of Independent Riders – a registration of independent riders. Tiger has worked tirelessly through the state legislature to address issues of importance to motorcyclists in Colorado including funding for beginning rider training and alcohol interlocking devices for motorcycles. She has also been instrumental in implementing a Biker Day at the Capital in Colorado as a
means of opening dialog between bikers and legislators.”
In addition, six others were named to the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame: Clyde Fessler of Harley-Davidson, Jesse Jurrens of Legend Suspensions, daredevil Jay “Lightnin’” Bentley, bike-builder Keith Terry of Baggster LLC, drag racer Bonnie Truett of Truett and Osborn, and custom builder Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation.
WEIRD NEWS: TEEN FAKES ROBBERY TO BUY MOTORCYCLE The desire to own a motorcycle drove a minor to stage an armed robbery and even inflict wounds on himself to make it look convincing. The Pune Cantonment police in India detained a 17-year-old boy for stealing Rs 1.27 lakh from his employer and later staging an armed robbery.
Investigations revealed that the minor staged the robbery as he wanted to buy a motorcycle. A police inspector said the boy was working in Sankla's travel agency. "On Saturday morning, Sankla gave the boy Rs 1.27 lakh and told him to deposit the money in the bank. However, the boy returned after some time with torn clothes and cuts on his wrists. He told (owner) Sankla that some unidentified persons stopped him while he was on his way to the bank, attacked him and snatched the cash from him before fleeing."
The proprietor rushed to the police station
with the boy, where the inspector later noted: "I became suspicious as the cuts on the boy's wrists looked self-inflicted. Moreover, he was unable to give proper description of the robbers. We then detained the boy and during sustained interrogation, he admitted that he had staged the robbery because the boy said he wanted to buy a motorcycle and, therefore, hatched the plot."
THE TALIBAN ENDORSES HONDA Taliban-published Azan magazine is quick to condemn America, but loves the Honda CG125. They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but Honda can’t be too pleased with the rave review it received from “Azan,” a quarterly magazine published by the Taliban. An English-language publication, “Azan” is radical propaganda intended to recruit disillusioned Muslims. The cover story for its third issue dealt with how to leave your life behind to join in the Jihad against the West, but buried in the pages of the issue was a full page spread titled “Steeds of War” that highlights the virtues of Honda’s CG125 as a vehicle of choice for the Mujahideen.
“All Praise is due to Allah Who has made the Crusaders flee with a humilating defeat at the hands of the Mujahideen who have so little resources compared to them. We, the Mujahidin, have won the war with HONDA 125s valued at around $700,” the magazine boasts.

PAC Report
that gets me centered with the world. We have to work to preserve our freedoms for the ones that follow. This means we need to come together as one voice and wake up to the issues that affect us and our lifestyle now and in the near future.
By Handi, S.R.M.C. & A.B.A.T.E. State PAC Hello riders,
There are issues being addressed in many states and we can’t afford to just sit back and assume that motorcyclists are not going to be affected. The entire world is on high alert right now and our country’s freedoms are under the magnifying glass, globally. When first introduced to riding some 49 years ago with a little honda 50cc i was hooked. Riding became a source of relaxation, of freedom and is still the “ground wire”
What’s some of the issues?
We must work to prevent motorcyclists from being excluded from public parking lots, roads, and parking garages.
We need to eliminate roadside checkpoints aimed only at motorcyclists. address the ever growing problem of distracted driving. The current number of drivers texting and talking on phones is at an all time high. We need to work to prohibit the use of higher ethanol (e-15) blends at the pump until the effects on motorcycle engines can be further studied.
PAGE 9 Also on the list, is working for legislation allowing motorcyclists to safely and reasonably proceed when they are stuck at a traffic light that will not recognize them. We also need to address state and local governments to promote sensible motorcycle awareness campaigns. not just in may, but permenant. How about a freedom of choice helment law for experienced riders over 21 years old and finally, lane splitting (filtering) nationwide? These issues and so much more are up for debate and need your help.
We cannot just sit back and think “everything will be all right.” It’s not now, and it won’t be in the future.
So what can you do to protect yourself and the future of the activity that we all love and hold dear to our survival?? Get involved. Start paying attention to the positions that your local, state and federal legislators take regarding the issues affecting all of us. Share your thoughts, talk or email your representatives. “Stand for something, or fall for anything”.
Motorcycle Riders Foundation Awareness & Education (MRFA&E) was established to promote motorcycle awareness and education due to an everincreasing rider population. No one is more concerned with rider safety than riders themselves, and obviously those best suited to educate newer riders are veteran riders.
Promote awareness and education in the motorcycle community to improve rider’s safety. Please donate, we are a 501C3 Corporation. Your donation is tax deductible. To donate go to our web site listed at the bottom.

Sturgis is over and everyone who went should be back home by now. I have finished most of my articles and they are posted here on Bikernet including the ones that started somewhere else and ended up at the CHIP.
NO Report on Sturgis would be complete without mentioning the World Famous Sturgis Buffalo Chip®. It is and has been a Big Part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for 33 Years and is now the Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling.
The well-known performers are too many to list here, but no matter what type of music you like, it was there. It was apparent others did as well. The “CHIP” is massive and does offer
Activities also included 6 Bike Shows, a televised biker build off and other activities.

New Docu-series To Chronicle Two Young Riders In Search Of What Makes America Great “The American Dream Project” is going to put a lens on the rarely-traversed areas of these United States to find hopeful Americans who still believe in this country and everything it stands for. British born, Seven year NY resident James Marshall fantasized of life in America for as long as he could remember. In recent years, James has noticed America is getting a bad rap, especially from it's own citizens. An inherent idealist and optimist, James is determined to find real patriots who share his passion for this place he now calls home. On a journey, crisscrossing the amber waves of grain and the purple mountain majesties on his Indian motorcycle, James and his friend Todd, the adventurous American, are determined to disprove the cynics and make people more hopeful again. In this original, authentic, and beautifully
MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2014 filmed docu-series, James and Todd are setting out on the archetypical American road trip, but with a specific purpose: to find the good in America, and to understand what the American dream means today.
With only $250 dollars for food and accommodation, the two men will visit communities across the country and stay with the people they meet on their journey. After a big push on social media, James and Todd will find the unsung heroes one tweet at a time. While working for their keep, they'll meet with everyday Americans and find out what’s going on in both the big cities and the one-horse towns. They'll talk to scientists who are curing cancer, get a wet shave with a WWII veteran who has wisdom to share, work with community leaders who focus on at risk youth, and sit with local politicians who sometimes struggle to be heard. It’s a unique chance to hear from the Americans who aren’t in the news, but have a voice and should be celebrated. They will find the extraordinary in communities that are bouncing back and uniting in the face of difficult times.

2014 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (Through the eyes of a Salt Flat Virgin)
The Bonneville Salt Flats is one of those special places that most motorcyclists only dream of visiting. It is the host location for all things speed. We have seen the movies, we have heard the stories. My firsthand experience exceeds any and all you may imagine about the legendary location. The 2014 BMST was an opportunity of a lifetime. Formerly the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials, the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials is one of the last bastions of high profile amateur motorcycle sporting events. The event is wholly volunteer run and kept that way to keep the “money people” from tarnishing the integrity of what many consider the premier speed trial event in motorcycling.
The volunteers at the BMST demonstrated an equal dedication to the sport as the racers themselves. The days were long, the conditions desolate, the mornings cold and the days hot, and the morale was through the roof. Most days for this volunteer were spent 6 miles down course on the Mountain Course 4 mile post, with a porta-potty, a 10x10 pop up and a green flag to launch racers that have qualified for a world record run. Three things stuck out throughout the event. Professionalism, Perseverance, and Sportsmanship. I decided to write this article by illustrating examples I witnessed in each category.
1. Professionalism: Cayla Rivas. Cayla is the 14 year old daughter of bagger
legend Chris Rivas. Cayla’s accomplishment this year was a two run average of 118.992 mph on a 500 cc Buell Blast. The speed was impressive, and after AMA verification will be a new world record. The 14 year old racer demonstrated professionalism beyond her years when after her down run the entire Bonneville course was closed for excessive wind. AMA rules dictate that in order to qualify as a world record, two runs must be completed on the same calendar day. Cayla Rivas, with the record dangling in front of her, watched as the time past. Hours were spent at the return run start line waiting for the wind to die down; hours were spent in impound while the opportunity for the record slipped away. Cayla remained in her leathers, kept her head focused on visualizing the run, and still found time to autograph some T-shirts for some new fans. 2. Perserverance: Dan Parker. I don’t think I need to go into Dan Parker’s accomplishments, but if you do not know who he is, look him up and learn the story of a champion and the “go to guy” for chassis and tuning in the drag racing world for many years. On March
31, 2012 Dan’s life changed forever at the 8th annual “The Quick and The Scared Outlaws” event when his car became airborne for no apparent reason resulting in broken limbs and a total loss of sight. Dan has made the quote that in racing “stuff just sometimes happens”.
Dan’s accomplishment at the BMST was impressive to say the least, with a down run of over 59mph and a return run of over 64mph. After FIM verification the average speed will be enough for a world record. I got to speak with Dan at the BMST awards dinner and he mentioned that these speeds were his fastest to date. Whether the meeting took place on the course, in the pits, at Carmen’s Black and White bar, or the laundry mat, talking with Dan and his crew was always a pleasure.
3. Sportsmanship: Brian Klock. Brian Klock of the world renowned Klock Werks Kustom Cycles took the volunteer’s vote for the most Sportsmanship
at the awards dinner held at the conclusion of the BMST event.
Brian had made a successful qualifying run on his 2008 Victory Hammer going for the FIM world record. For the FIM records to set the racer must complete the down run and the return run within 2 hours. After Brian’s successful down run, he reported to impound for inspection, all the while the clock is ticking. Brian was ready to complete his return run but time was running out. With the clock running out, a 7 mile ride to the starting point, and a world record hanging in the balance, Brian demonstrated excellent sportsmanship by following all rules and speed limits on the course return road (35 mph). BMST Tower personnel (situated mid way down the track), knowing that the record was in jeopardy waved Klock on with no speed restrictions. Brian’s refusal to break the rules before receiving permission to deviate from the speed limits even with a world record at stake, caused to run to be completed 17 seconds too late to qualify. Brian returned on Tuesday after a wind delay shut the course down on Monday, to make an average run of 163.472mph. This will be a new world record in the M-BG/2000 class once verified by FIM.
I got to spend a week around legends, witness unparalleled camaraderie, sportsmanship, professionalism, and perseverance. I cannot wait for the 2015 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed

days of riding, and helped calm down my screaming shoulders and back. NOTE TO SELF: Take Tylenol starting with breakfast.
Things that stood out about the road trip: There are a lot of road kill dogs in northern AZ country. Moab UT was a pleasant surprise. Take time to go through Arches National Monument. Green River UT sucks. Around Cheyenne WYO, expect 40-60 m.p.h. cross winds, which the locals think aren’t bad. 90 m.p.h. winds are called ‘tree benders’. Porcupines in Wyoming are HUGE. A pot hole in the middle of the right lane on I-70 going through Vail CO could’ve taken the tire
off a car or sent a motorcyclist to an early grave. Fog around Denver doesn’t lift by 10 a.m., like on the coast. When taking roads less traveled, gas stations are few and far between. Don’t pass up getting more gas if you have ½ tank or less. Nothing needlessly zaps the fun out of riding more than constantly watching your gas gauge drop to the big “E”, and every hill you go over offers no sign of civilization as far as you can see. I never heard of Lusk WYO before, but was really happy when we got there, and they had gas. Likewise, Crown Point NM had one gas station, just in time. Special THANKS to our State Safety

Officer, Jim Silk for noticing my Harley’s front tire was very low on air just before we went for a ride together to a meeting. If you have laced rims, check your tire pressure EVERY time before you ride. Read more about tires and air pressure in his safety article in this issue. Until next month, make the most of every day, “MK” Mary K. Donnay A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona, Inc. State President president@abateofaz.org (602) 751-3180
I Never Get Tired About This One... Lets Roll preaching time to get in the know!! Yes indeed size matters!!
To determine the size of a potential set of tires, you need to evaluate their rim width. What does this mean? It means that the tires cannot be any wider or narrower than the initial equipment tires. If they are the handling of your motorcycle could get distorted. Under pressure,,,never over!!
By Jim Silk State Safety Officer
Tires are a very important part of a motorcycle. Without them the motorcycle would not be able to move in the first place. This is why it is very important that every motorcycle owner possesses general knowledge about what they can expect from the tires they plan on using from their vehicle. Choosing the wrong type of tire could adversely affect how the motorcycle drives. It may even cost a motorcycle owner more money, trying to repair flats or replace the tire all together. If you trying to save money don't buy cheap tires. They don't last and they won't make you a better ride either. Ok no more
The pressure associated with motorcycle tires increases as the temperature rises. This is why motorcycle riders need to regularly check their tires' pressure, especially during the summer months here in Arizona . They can find specific recommendations on which tire pressures are best for their vehicle by checking out their motorcycle manufacturer's reference manual. They can also further protect their tires' pressure by not bleeding air from tires that are hot and/or riding on the tires when they are under-inflated. Doing otherwise wears the tires down prematurely. Then it's new tire time when you could a went a few more miles Don't wear me done now,,,
Bikers need to periodically check the wear indicator associated with their tire grooves. If the wear indicators are at the same level as the tread's surface, the tires probably need to be replaced. Ball caps,,are nice but check your valve cap please,,,
Proper use of valve caps can prevent air from escaping from one's motorcycle tires. It can also prevent dirt from getting into the valve, improving overall efficiency of the tires.
Lets just warm you up a little now,,ready??
Start at a moderate speed when you first get on your motorcycle. Doing so helps allow the tires to reach their core operating temperatures in a much smoother manner. When the tires do reach their warm-up, they will offer the best grip for the kinda biker you are! Did you know that all tires need a break in ride??
Don't accelerate rapidly or use hard cornering techniques once your tires have appropriately warmed up, as this can quickly wear them out. You will want to
avoid doing these things for at least 50 kilometers. This is the amount of time/distance it takes for the tread area to be completely worn off. Now ya broke it,,how to repair it
It is important that you acquire basic knowledge associated with motorcycle repair, so you won't have to rely on a mechanic should you have problems with your tires or even the vehicle itself. Numerous books and you tube videos are available to help provide the basics for motorcycle riders who are new to the experience. Some of them are free. Either way, take advantage of the information so you won't find yourself being stranded if something does go wrong with your motorcycle's tires. Hey it might be time to check those tires and get ready for the East valleys Hard Ass run Oct 4th starting out at the "what the Hell" Bar and grill in Mesa sign in 79 great food prices and one heck of a mystery ride poker run you will soon to enjoy. Check your air pressure and go!! Ride safe daily! -Jim
PAGE 14 14NR37 - EPA sends ethanol regulations to White House FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 28 August 2014
Contact:Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs EPA sends ethanol regulations to White House
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sent its final regulations to the White House for Presidential approval, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports. This is the final step in the approval process before the mandate can be revealed.
Last year, the EPA proposed that the amount of ethanol to be produced by refiners actually be reduced over previous years. This plan to reduce the amount of ethanol to be produced by refiners sent shockwaves through the energy community. Petroleum users lauded the proposal as a step in the right direction. The MRF testified at an EPA hearing on the proposal in favor of more study on the effects that E-15 can have on the components of a motorcycle. The MRF is also actively supporting legislation to end the sale of
News from the MRF
E-15 fuels until a comprehensive, scientific study is conducted by an independent agency. To date the EPA has only tested the higher ethanol blend's tail pipe exhaust emissions, no testing was done on the power train of a motorcycle itself before the blend was approved.
The proposal was by far one the most controversial ever put forth by the EPA and received over 340,000 public comments.
While the EPA announced the White House review they did not release whether any changes were made to last year's proposal to lower the amount of ethanol that needs to be produced. The EPA will release the final rule after the White House and other federal agencies weigh in. The White House has 90 days to review the proposal and issue a response. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation will keep you informed on this issue. ========================== Washington Weekly Updates Week of September 12, 2014
And we’re back. Congress returned from
their traditional five week summer district work period this week, with sort of a whimper. With lots of backlog on news of jobs (there aren’t any), foreign acts of terrorism (there are a lot), and not to mention the looming November elections, one would think that it would have been a busy week. It hasn’t been and its not likely to be busy. The Congress is planning an unprecedented event, adjourning early. In my days on the hill we would be is session until late December in election years with no adjournment to speak of. So this move to send all the politicians back to their home districts to campaign like crazy, shows how important this election is. Target adjournment is September 23rd. Speaking of elections, this is where I encourage you to join a campaign, any campaign! There are lots of state wide Senate toss up races that could dramatically shift the control of the Senate. I'll leave it up to you as to whether a new Senate majority would be good or bad.
You likely saw my release earlier about the TIGER grants or Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recover grants. The TIGER grants are a holdover from the failed stimulus package of 2009. Here's my “thing about”
MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2014 TIGER grants. They don’t work to address national transportation needs and they are highly political. TIGER grants allow the Secretary of Transportation to doll out 600 million a year with very little oversight. The money is petered away on small scale projects that impact a handful of users. Things like bike paths, electric vehicle corridors and street cars are the recipients of the award money instead of big ticket items such as major congestion issues and multimodal projects. One grant is even going for a walking path. I guess walking is technically transportation but c’mon! The grants or as they should be called, gifts are supposed to also create jobs, which after all was the main goal of the stimulus package in the first place. So far there has been zero evidence that this grant program has created any jobs. I participated in a conference call with the Secretary on Friday and he blamed Congress for not passing a large scale spending bill, which is definitely part of the problem with our nations infrastructure. I hope everyone is gearing up for MOTM! Jeff Hennie
MASTERLINK OCTOBER 2014
Hello friends, this month I am going to talk about the upcoming elections. As you all know my main goal in life is to get the government off our asses and get the police to leave us alone. To accomplish these goals we actually have to get involved with the government. I've found that the best way to do that is to get involved with the people who are running for office before they get elected. I realize that not all of us has the time or the patience to deal with politicians so I am going to suggest a few names that are worthy of consideration for our votes. First in the Governor race, on opening day at the Capitol we had the opportunity to speak with Fred DuVal and Doug Ducey. Fred took the time to listen to our issues and asked questions. Doug Doucey gave me about two minutes and said that he would have to see specific legislation after it passed the House and Senate before he could decide if he could support it. I will say that if Fred DuVal is elected we will have the ear of the Governor if not his total support. In the attorney general race, Felicia Rotellini is someone I have known for nearly 5 years. She ran for Atty. Gen. in 2010 and nearly won the office. This past year I've spoken with her on several occasions, including at her birthday party, on the plight of motorcycle riders and motorcycle clubs in the state of Arizona. She is very well-versed on our issues and has assured me that if she is elected she will work to change law enforcement treatment of bikers as outlaws. Her opponent in this race is running as a law and order candidate which generally means that they will give law enforcement a blank check. I have never had a chance to actually speak with him because the current Atty. Gen. was running for reelection and I did not think that he would lose his primary. And as he was too busy trying to cover his ass for all the crap that he was into I never actually had a chance to speak with him. So if Felicia Rotellini wins this election we will have another friend in office that will critically analyze law enforcement actions against our community in an effort to minimize unfair treatment and actually guide law enforcement agencies towards fighting real crime. Kyrsten Sinema and Ann Kirkpatrick cosponsored H. R. 1861, a bill that would outlaw using federal funds earmarked for motorcycle safety and awareness to create motorcycle only checkpoints. It also happens that they are both personal friends of mine and should be reelected. Matt Salmon was a motorcycle rider in his youth and has a staffer in Washington that is a motorcycle rider, and although he did not agree to cosponsor 1861, I was assured that his staff would advise him to vote for our bill so he should be reelected as well. David Schweikert came to meet with us on Day At The Dome in 2013 and talked to us for quite some time. He assured us that he would do what he could to help us. If you live in his district you should vote
PAGE 15
Johnny D is Back
for him and try to have an appointment with them when he is in town. Although he supported the shutting down of the government which hurt several of our members he does communicate with constituents and is open to suggestions. Ruben Gallego is a veteran running for Congress in District 7. He fought in Iraq and decided to run for office at the state legislature. He spent two terms in the Arizona house and is a member of the veterans Caucus. In Washington DC he will be a strong supporter of veterans issues which are closely intertwined with motorcycle rights as a great number of our community are veterans and families of veterans.
Other legislators who support our issues include Karen Fann in the Prescott area, Dr. Eric Meyer in LD 28, Judy Burges who sponsored our anti-profiling legislation, Victoria Steele in the Tucson area, Andrew Sherwood, Katie Hobbs, Don Shooter, Gail Griffin, Lela Alston. Other members of the veterans Caucus include Mark Cardenas, Jonathan Larkin, and Martin Quezada who all agreed to cosponsor legislation.
Kate Brophy-McGee in LD 28 understood our issues but did not want to codify into law training of police officers respecting the civil rights of bikers. If she wins reelection, which is more than likely, we will have to work hard to convince her that any legislation that benefits motorcycle riders is worth her vote. Ed Ableser was vehemently opposed to any legislation that would restrain law enforcement in any way. He should be voted out of office and ridden out of town on a rail. His belief that all motorcycle clubs are criminal organizations and that we should all be locked up do not belong in this century.
These are my recommendations, there are many down ballot choices that you will have to make on your own. After November 4 I will commence my efforts to meet with the newly elected public servants. My focus will be on people who write and vote on legislation, the governor, and the attorney general's office as these are the key offices in our efforts to keep ourselves free. One more quick note, Chester Crandell was killed in a horse riding accident. He was the chairman of the Public Safety committee and was a strong supporter of motorcycle rights. He was replaced on the ballot by Sylvia Allen a former legislator. I spoke with Judge Clancy Jayne at our recent ABATE meeting. He is heavily involved in Republican politics in Arizona and told me that Ms. Allen is crazy. She is disliked greatly in the party and only made it to the ballot because that district had an emergency on their hands and needed someone ASAP. So Clancy Jayne recommends that someone other than Sylvia Allen be elected to that seat.
When I am at the legislature I tell them that we have 163,000 motorcycles registered in the state of Arizona, and that a number of people own more than one so our estimate is that we have 120,000 adult motorcycle riders in this state and the vast majority of them are eligible to vote. That is true political power. Many statewide elections have been won or lost by less than 1000 votes. Some district elections have been won or lost by less than 100 votes. We need to exercise this political muscle that we have, and while it is true that wealthy people can give large sums of money to candidates they only get one vote each. We, on the other hand, have the ability to deliver a large number of votes if we are organized and focused on our issues. Recently a candidate questionnaire was sent out and responses were distributed in an email. I took exception to the questionnaire as the only motorcycle related question involved helmet laws. I believe that in the future the various motorcycle rights groups need to have their board members identify issues that pertain to motorcycle riders and formulate questionnaires that actually include these issues. We cannot have someone purport to be representing the motorcycle community and then ask political questions that have nothing to do with motorcycles. This is food for thought as we have elections every other year for various nonstate offices such as city Council, Mayor's, county supervisors, sheriffs departments, and other local offices. We should start working now to ensure that we are ready for the next round. And anyone who does not like our current set of representatives needs to remember that every two years the entire state legislature, the entire House of
Representatives, and one third of the United States Senate are up for reelection. There is no need for Second Amendment remedies, there is only a need to become politically active, at least to the point where you get your ballot, fill it out and drop it in a box. Federal law requires that your employer give you two hours off with pay to go and vote unless the polls are open two hours before or two hours after your scheduled shift. In Arizona we have what is called a permanent early voting list and you can go online at www.serviceArizona.com and put yourself on this early voting list, your ballot will come in the mail a month before the election. You can fill it out at your leisure and mail it back until about a week before the election. You can even go to the polls on election day with your early ballot, shoot the shit with the people in line, get paid for two hours, and then just drop your early ballot in the box. Many of us are working on balloting by email or on the Internet. It is so easy to vote here in Arizona that the only actual excuse you have is that you don't give a shit. If that is the case don't complain about the government you get because that is the government that you choose by refusing to participate. So on election day remember "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice". That's a line from a Rush song that was big in the 70s when I was growing up.
