URGENT - the Motorcycle Lobby Team needs your help in finding any and all restricted Left Turn Lanes, at intersections that do NOT detect a motorcycle!!! We are in the process of building a case for possible legislation to allow a Left On Red for motorcycles, if we find there is a need for this in Arizona. abateofaz.org

- When you come upon an intersection that has this issue, you will need to do ALL of the following BEFORE contacting one of the Motorcycle Lobby Team members: 1 - Test it out more than once or twice to be sure it is a 'VALID' problem before we will contact Public Works.

We are currently working with many of the major Public Works Departments and will be contacting them to address each and every individual 'VALID' occurance, as we are made aware of with them. Here is what we need all of you to do:

2 - DO NOT just give us the coordinates of the intersection. We need Specifics. - Which direction N/S/E/W were you going, on which street and which direction N/S/E/W were you attempting to turn onto and the name of that street. - We will need the Dates & Timeframe of all occurrences, as video can work differently from night to day. - What is the name of the City the light is in. - If there are two left turn lanes, which one were you in, Left or Right. - If it was not a Left Turn but the Green Light failed to detect you, we need to know that as well. - You will need to provide us with your name and phone number in case we have any further questions on your reporting.

3 - If it only works once in awhile, we need to also know this.

- Once you have the information above, please contact any one of the following Motorcycle Lobby Team Members direct. Again, be sure to leave us with your name and contact information in case we have any more questions or the public works in your area needs to contact you themselves direct: Vic Grady - 602-300-4115 or hellfireguitarphxaz@hotmail.com Billy Larson - 623-308-0676 or larson_billy@hotmail.com Paul 'Skypilot' Price - 623-221-1895 or skypilotlrmc@earthlink.net Bobbi Hartmann - 602-672-3531 or bobbij2@earthlink.net Respectfully, The Motorcycle Lobby Team

Harley Recalls Bikes for Ignition Switch Problem

Reprinted from http://www.tucsonnewsnow.com By TOM KRISHER AP Auto Writer DETROIT (AP) - Ignition switch problems that have plagued General Motors and Chrysler have now turned up in the motorcycle business.

Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 4,500 FXDL Dyna Low Rider bikes worldwide because engine vibration can turn the switches from "on" to "accessory."

The recall covers motorcycles from the 2014 ½ model year, including more than 3,300 in the U.S. If the motorcycles have been modified to rev higher than 5,600 RPMs, an engine mount bracket can vibrate excessively, causing the problem.

If the switch goes to "accessory," the engine can shut off while being driven and potentially cause a crash. The company said there have been no crashes or injuries reported from the problem.

Dealers will replace the bracket assembly and ignition switch knob for free. Harley began notifying owners in late July.

Harley said in documents posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the motorcycles are limited at the factory to 5,600 RPMs, but Harley offers performance calibrations that let the engine rev higher than the limit. If the bikes hit 5,800 RPMs, the top engine mount bracket can vibrate too much and cause the ignition switches to malfunction.

The company said it began looking into the problem after its service department discovered that an ignition switch slipped out of the "on" position in testing. Harley found four warranty claims and complaints about the problem, all in bikes with non-Harley exhaust systems.

The Milwaukee company's recall comes after General Motors recalled 17.3 million vehicles to fix problems with ignition switches that can cause engine stalling. Chrysler has recalled another 1.7 million for the same problem. So far this year the auto industry has recalled more than 40 million vehicles, passing the old full-year record of 30.8 million set in 2004.

Federal safety regulators in June began a broad investigation of ignition-switch

and air-bag problems across the auto industry. That investigation is still open, although the agency wouldn't say if more automakers could be affected. Harley said it issued the recall independently, and it has nothing to do with ignition switch problems in the auto industry or the NHTSA investigation. The investigation and recalls come after GM bungled an ignition-switch recall of older small cars. GM acknowledged that it knew of the ignition problem for more than a decade but failed to recall the cars until earlier this year, when it recalled 2.6 million small cars such as the Chevrolet Cobalt. Subsequent safety reviews caused GM to recall millions more vehicles for faulty switches.

East Valley Chapter

On Sunday, July 27, 2014, East Valley members gathered at the FOE building in Mesa. Joe led the meeting. Richard started us off with the pledge and a moment of silence. We had a special guest in Li’l Bit - Winner of Ms 2014 TBFS.

Jim Silk discussed our annual Hard Ass Run, set to be held on Saturday, October 4th, beginning at What The Hell Bar and Grill in Mesa. The Hard Ass Run promises to be a good time, and we welcome all our brothers and sisters out to enjoy.

Jim also talked about an interesting proposal that looks to combine membership increases and chances to improve rider skills and safety. More on that later as the idea develops. Membership and PAC were reported on as well.

We also confirmed our Annual Biker Bowl for Sunday August 24 at 1:30 pm at Mesa East Bowl, after our chapter meeting.

The VP of The Phoenix Vulcan Riders (ABATE Club member) was in attendance to discuss their annual Highway Thunder Charity Ride in October. They seem to be gathering a good number of heavy-weight sponsors for their charity run this year.

Mary K reported on this year’s Too Broke For Sturgis rally, as well as announced the dates for next year: June 11 to 15, 2015. The East Valley Chapter also pledged some money to the Trademark Defense Fund, in hopes of protecting our future freedom of association, and the right to wear patches.

A couple of other items of business brought up were the sending of EV representatives to the Meeting of the Minds in September, as well as running an ABATE booth at the September and October Motorcycles on Main (bike nights) in downtown Mesa, always held on the first Friday of the month. All the best, Larry Keim COMMS, VC, PAC

Hello Brothers and Sisters.

Monsoon season in definitely here, so pack your wet weather gear when planning to ride. Our weather is unpredictable so be prepared and mindful of wet roads and flooded washes.

During our last meeting we discussed upcoming state officer and B.O.D elections. Also the fund raiser event to follow. All this is being held Nov.1 2014 at the American Italian club 7509 N 12th Street Phx. starting 11:00 am. I hope you all can come out and support A.B.A.T.E.. We also talked about our chapter event;

MOTORCYCLE BILL AIMS TO BRING EQUAL TREATMENT IN SOUTH CAROLINA South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley recently signed a Motorcycle Equal Access Bill that mandates equal treatment toward motorcyclists across the state in all public areas.

This legislation, sponsored by Rep. Todd Atwater (R-Lexington), amends the Code of South Carolina to keep local law enforcement agencies from denying access to motorcyclists on public highways, bridges, parking garages and essentially any publicly funded areas.

H.C.C. had unfortunately lost one of our members to a battle with cancer. Cindy McCanon passed away Jun. 30th 2014. So after our meeting a few of us took a ride out to the Whispering Hope Ranch. A very beautiful ranch where children with special needs can go to interact with horses and other animals to experience a peaceful ranch life style. Cindy loved this place and donated much time and money to this cause. So it was only fitting to have a memorial for her there. Cindy we will miss you dearly.

The following week we took a ride down to Jake's Corner bar to deliver the M.M.A. Jester Run plaque for Rick Heppler to his sister Robin Heppler. This was long over due because of Robin's very busy schedule. So I am making an official apology to all those who wanted to be there but couldn't due to short notice from Robin. The presentation was very emotional for her, and all who were present.

On a happier note Jillian Hawkins, our merchandise officer is recovering well from her operation. She has even graced us with her presence at our monthly meeting. We were so glad to see her looking and feeling much better. Way to go Jill. I would like to invite everyone to our monthly meeting held at the Moose Lodge in Star Valley Az. Meeting is on the 3rd Sunday of every month at 10:00 am. Breakfast is available at the Spur Bar at 8:30am. After our meeting we will be going for a ride, destination unknown, Weather permitting. Our Chapter meeting at the Kettle at Starr Pass & I-10 brought about 20 of us together. David Lebo won the dollar, but was not present, so the $129 rolls over o the next meeting. To win the dollar jar, you must be present. We talked about the last TBFS event and the date change to DRY June, instead of WET July! Those that attended loved the date change. Although, I am sure it may

MASTERLINK SEPTEMBER 2014

take a few years for regulars to get used to the date change. Anyway, because the weather was much better it seemed more people participated in the events held all weekend. The Bike show had some great bikes. Many more people participated in the Poker walk, Poker run, People Games and bikes games. June will work out great in the long run, and next year’s event will be June 11-14 2015 at Mormon Lake Lodge. See you there to escape the heat as the weather is beautiful in the mountains in June. We still have some TBFS 2015 events shirts left and we now have some new State Shirts with the large AZ Flag behind the biker silhouette. They look great, so ask your Chapter officers for them while they last.

Safety Officer Jim DeYoung spoke about the danger of dragging pegs while cornering. Sue its fun, but the risk that lateral G-force may cause your tire to lose traction. Be careful, as race bike have special tire compounds to accommodate a more dramatic lean into corners. At 45 degrees the here is about 1G of force, and most production motorcycles lose traction at about 1.1 Gs or less. Our Treasurer Dawn reported a decent treasury especially after a successful raffle raising some revenues. So, it is time to figure out what to spend it on and reinvest for another fundraising event for the Chapter. Walker won the TV. Spear won a grill, and Sgt at Arms won the DVD Player. Turns out all prizes were appropriate that all could really use at the time. Congrats to all, and thank you to all who bought a raffle ticket to support ABATE. Southern AZ Coordinator Jim Butsback reminded us of November Officer Elections and discussion ensured for who would remain. We still need volunteers to fill the Communications, Events, and Merchandise positions. A contested election would be great for a change and new people and ideas are always great to infuse new energy into the Chapter. When we have all positions filled the work is minimal for each person and provides a lot of support from fellow officers. I personally, believe volunteering to be a rewarding experience. Your fellow officers would appreciate any help. While I would like to see more volunteers to help ABATE of AZ, I do ask you all to volunteer for something. You will be a better person for doing so. Turns out that the IRS is abandoning the new rules defining “Political Activity” and the metric determine the amount of “Political Activity” a 501c4 can engage due to public comments and outrage. The rules as proposed would have damaged the ability to function as Education and Welfare groups like ABATE of AZ and the MRF. Our Membership/Elections meeting is planned for a change to occur at the Arizona American Italian Club (AAIC)

ed this bill, many feeling that law enforcement has not treated them right for a long time and they say they're ready for a change. "There's few municipalities, in particular, that want to stop motorcycles from parking in publicly funded taxpayer areas," said one ABATE spokesperson. "If tax payers are paying for a garage, then they should not be allowed to tell us we can't park there."

Under the bill, cities and counties have to make reasonable accommodations for motorcycle parking in lots and garages.

"All this bill is about is equal access, this is making sure that when you go to any city in this state that if you have a motorcycle you have a place to park,” said the governor who is also an ABATE member, adding; "As long as I have been in office, ABATE has been my friends, and that's because they fight for all the right things;

they've always fought for safety, they've always fought for individual rights, they've always fought to make sure that people have the liberties they should have."

MISSOURI LIFTS BAN ON SUNDAY CYCLE SALES Due to so-called "Blue Laws" influenced by early religious edicts, vehicle sales are prohibited on the Sabbath in several states, but Missouri recently joined a growing list of states that are repealing these outdated bans.

Governor Jay Nixon signed HB1735 on Monday, June 23rd that will lift a ban on Sunday sales of motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, personal watercraft and other items typically sold by power-sports dealers.

The legislation was championed by motor-

this year, instead of Chileen’s. The AAIC (where we hold our Board and State Meetings, as well as Officer training in January), approached ABATE to partner in an event on the Fall to provide food and share in the revenues as a fundraiser. There are going to be Guest Speakers Matt Brown speak about search and seizure rights, as well as Wayne Wierson from Idaho giving a lecture on responsible riding as well as family events to enjoy are planned. Adding another State Fundraiser is important to establish other revenues streams other than TBFS so we can keep the membership low. By holding the Elections and Fall Fundraiser the same day will also hopefully encourage more participation in the Elections. The event is being planned for Saturday November 1st. Stay tuned for details. Take care, and see you at…

The Yuma chapter met on July 8th at 6:30 pm at the IHOP restaurant to conduct our monthly business meeting. The meeting was called to order, guests were introduced, and normal reports were addressed. Most of the chapter officers were not present at the July meeting due to summer vacations. The meeting mostly consisted of talking about Too Broke For Sturgis (TBFS). The Yuma chapter cannot say enough about how fun TBFS was this year. The location, the weather, the atmosphere, and the people were awesome. We would like to thank all those ABATE members behind the scenes that made TBFS a great success. We cannot wait for Too Broke For Sturgis 2015! The Yuma ABATE chapter meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm. The meetings are held at the IHOP restaurant located at 575 East 16th Street, Yuma, AZ 85365. For the love of freedom,

cycle riders and at least one HarleyDavidson dealer from the Kansas City area, who told lawmakers that he was losing Sunday business to a competitor in Kansas.

When the measure takes effect August 28, Missouri will join Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Maryland in removing their Sunday sales bans over the past few years.

Other states that currently prohibit the Sunday sales of motorcycles and automobiles are Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Oklahoma, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

The Missouri legislation does not repeal the state's ban on Sunday sales of cars and trucks.

UTAH LAWMAKERS URGED TO “GET

MASTERLINK SEPTEMBER 2014 AHEAD” OF OUTLAW BIKERS A perceived proliferation of outlaw motorcycle “gangs” in Utah has led a veteran police officer to warn lawmakers that they need to get ahead of the curve.

"There's been a 300 percent increase in the members of outlaw motorcycle gangs in Utah, compared to what we experienced five years ago," Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane Critser told members of the Legislature's Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Interim Committee on Wednesday, July 16.

Critser, who has worked in gang enforcement since 2008, said the proliferation of gangs and gang members could be attributed to multiple factors. Utah is an "untouched" state, meaning no gang has claimed territory as its own. Also, law enforcement in Utah is unaccustomed to dealing with outlaw motorcycle gangs on a regular basis, he said. "It's like a gold rush. Everybody is trying to get here and establish dominance in the state so they can run a variety of their criminal activities and make their money in the state," Critser testified to the committee.

vest, were banned in the capital as the symbols of a criminal organization.

The state also is becoming increasingly attractive to members of outlaw motorcycle clubs because Utah is largely rural, said Rep. Paul Ray (R-Clearfield), pointing out that a number of clubs have hosted runs in Utah, including one where several members racked up citations for multiple violations in numerous counties en route to Weber County, and "By the time they got there, they just turned around and went home. They didn’t want to deal with it any more," Ray said. "Really, you've got to make it expensive and uncomfortable for these guys and they won't want to stick around."

According to GlobalPost, a Hamburg judge outlawed Germany's first Hells Angels charter in the city in 1983, but the Hells Angels as an organization have never before been banned across Germany. Now the prohibition of the iconic logo has come about through an ironic twist. When a former member of the banned Hamburg charter appealed to the court in April to be allowed to wear the club's “colors,” the judge interpreted the original ruling to mean that the Hells Angels logo is illegal not only in Hamburg, but throughout the country.

While he offered no details, Ray said he intends to introduce a gang initiative during the 2015 legislative session.

“Now, all the other regions in Germany are thinking about that judgment,” said detective superintendent Matthias Frohn, deputy head of the Berlin police division responsible for curtailing the city's motorcycle gangs. Frohn says it remains to be seen whether the broader ban on the club’s logo will be enough to finally scatter the gang.

BERLIN BANS HELLS ANGELS LOGO Outlawing the motorcycle club’s symbols represents the latest weapon in a fight to stop Germany’s ‘rocker wars.’ In the latest salvo of a battle to rein in outlaw motorcycle clubs, authorities in Berlin are hitting the global Hells Angels brand where it hurts most: the logo.

formally refused permission to become a registered incorporated body in South Australia. Despite claims by the club that it hosts recreational and charity events and that it was only formed because of its members’ interests in American motorcycles, Acting Liquor Licensing Commissioner Dini Soulio has refused their application.

Senior legal sources told the Herald-Sun newspaper that they believe the Mongols’ move was largely tactical and aimed at thwarting the provisions of the Serious and Organized Crime (Control) Act should police obtain association or control orders against any members in the future.

SA Attorney-General John Rau has endorsed the decision, made on public safety grounds, to reject the Mongols’ incorporation application.

A Mongols source said the club was considering a legal challenge to the ruling “in the same successful way as two previous legal challenges” involving anti-bikie legislation.

bikes, which is music to our ears, may be a faintly distant tune in the future. The loudest noise on the streets right now is the buzz and the buzz on the streets is “SAVE THE PATCH”.

‘SAVE THE PATCH’ is the culmination of many factors including decades of ever increasing discrimination and persecution to Bikers, their organizations and their lifestyle in general. We as bikers have widely been subjected to unwarranted highway stops, refused admittance into establishments and misrepresentation by law enforcement and the media. The U.S. Department of Justice last year filed a lawsuit seeking to seize control of the trademarked logo of the Mongol Nation Motorcycle Club LLC, arguing that the Mongols are a criminal organization and that the mark is used for intimidation; but the Mongols and their attorneys argue that the government is overstepping its bounds with the lawsuit, which they said would infringe on the rights of club members. "They're trying to destroy the right of men to associate and indicate their association," said Joe Yanny, an attorney representing the Mongols. "It's absolutely ridiculous. In addition to being a violation of club members' free-speech rights, more importantly, it's a due-process issue.”

The lawsuit breaks new ground in terms of trademark law, the attorney said, adding that it may end up at the Supreme Court. Unlike a business trademark controlled by a single entity, the Mongols' logo is a "collective membership mark,” and "It's legally owned by one entity, but held in trust

for the members. It's the votes of club members that ultimately determined who is allowed to wear the club's patch.”

Bikers throughout the state and nationwide identify with the message being sent out and the ramifications, if the patch is lost, it will affect us all. In southern California, widely respected members of all major clubs have met to discuss ways to save the patch. A Facebook page “SAVE the PATCH” has been set up since October and it states: “It has become time to further protect and defend our rights to ride, associate, and enjoy our lifestyle for all motorcycle riders and enthusiasts. To wear our respective clubs membership insignia, which have been trademarked, copyrighted, and incorporated by these organized entities. Representatives from a few of these clubs in Southern California have come together to make the initial steps in presenting and organizing the support of all motorcycle clubs and riders to stand up and work to prevent the freedoms we all value and enjoy from being eroded further, by an ever more intrusive government apparently bent on tyrannical control, we all need to become involved and work to defend that which we all enjoy about our lifestyle, be it as a club member or independent riders.” The good news is, the passion to ride, the passion for freedom and the passion to preserve the life style is more than enough to unite the Biker world in whatever stance it takes to SAVE THE PATCH. WEIRD NEWS: WHAT’S A “BIKER”? Do you identify yourself as a “biker,” a “motorcyclist,” or a “rider”? To some motorcycle riders, the terms are fairly interchangeable. To others, the terms are more finely nuanced, as the people behind the Oxford English Dictionary recently discovered.

Last February, the online edition for the Oxford English Dictionary rewrote its definition for “biker” after receiving complaints from motorcyclists. Riders took exception to the old definition which read: “a motorcyclist, especially one who is a member of a gang: a long-haired biker in dirty denims.”

In a poll of 524 motorcycle riders, nearly three-quarters of them said the definition was inaccurate, while 60% said it was “dated and irrelevant.” Another 21% had a more passionate reaction, saying they were “outraged and offended.”

In response, the Oxford University Press, which publishes the OED, updated the definition to read: “a motorcyclist, especially one who is a member of a gang or group: a biker was involved in a collision with a car.”

We’re not sure that’s much better, but then we don’t represent ourselves to be the “most comprehensive dictionary of the English language.”

‘SAVE THE PATCH’ is the culmination of many factors including decades of ever increasing discrimination and persecution to Bikers, their organizations and their lifestyle in general. This message is to anyone who rides two or three wheels and wants to wear a patch that says ANYTHING!!!! We as bikers have been subjected to unnecessary highway stops, refused admittance into establishments and are misrepresented by law enforcement and the media to the general public. MY dream of all riders uniting as “ONE VOICE , ONE STRENGTH” and agreeing on important issues, means that we CAN influence lawmakers and legislation. When we divide ourselves we have less momentum and become vulnerable. To put it simply, it doesn’t matter if you are a club patch-holder or an independent rider, JOIN THE FIGHT TO CONTINUE TO RIDE FREE. Become a MEMBER of A.B.A.T.E., AMA AND THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION (MRF), and take stand for what you believe. We are all in this together.

Motorcycle Riders Foundation Awareness & Education (MRFA&E) was established to promote motorcycle awareness and education due to an everincreasing rider population. No one is more concerned with rider safety than riders themselves, and obviously those best suited to educate newer riders are veteran riders.

Promote awareness and education in the motorcycle community to improve rider’s safety. Please donate, we are a 501C3 Corporation. Your donation is tax deductible. To donate go to our web site listed at the bottom.

Our Culture of Death

By Johnny D

In our community of motorcycle riders we embrace the symbols of death. We wear skulls and crossbones on our clothing, the Grim Reaper seems to be our constant companion. Recently a celebrity committed suicide, he was world renowned and loved by millions. But yet, alone in his room, he could not stand to live one more day so he killed himself. Last week a member of the MC community killed himself as well. Those who knew him know the grisly details of the incident and are still trying to figure out how he could do what he did. Two days ago a dear friend of mine lost her battle with cancer, up until her last breath she fought for life with everything she had. I am told that she died with a smile on her face and without a single complaint about the unfairness of this disease that robbed her. I sit here in my room sometimes and I don't want to get out of bed. It seems that recently my life is nothing but a series of doctors appointments, physical therapy, court appearances, and meetings with attorneys. When I do have to leave I have to go past my motorcycle that sits

the P&Ps.

Recently I've been watching the events occurring in Missouri. A young man was shot and killed by police and this outraged the community to the point where people started rioting. This led the police to don their military gear and declare

martial law in the community. Suddenly the First Amendment no longer applies in Ferguson, Missouri as news reporters are arrested for writing articles, a camera crew had tear gas fired at them and as they ran from the gas their equipment was disassembled by law enforcement. We know all too well how the police can overstep their bounds, over react to situations, and violate our rights wholesale simply because of who we are.

I am reminded of an incident where the police in Mesa nearly caused a dozen motorcycle wrecks by swarming into a pack and then pulling over the riders for swerving to evade their cars. Weapons were drawn and pointed at their heads, a female passenger had a handgun shoved into her face with such force that it left a bruise. Her only crime was attempting to step off of the motorcycle so that her husband would not have to hold her weight while he had to balance the bike while having his life threatened. It seems that our law enforcement agencies have been given licenses to kill.

When I was 17 I was dragged out of a car, thrown on the ground, and had an officer step on my back and put his shotgun to my head. All the while screaming that he would blow my f*****g head into the ground if I moved. That was in 1976. The only thing that has changed is that now they have better weapons, body armor, and the attitude that they are all "heroes"and can do no wrong. One big problem we have is that our politicians run for office spouting epithets such as

"law and order", and seeking the endorsement of the law enforcement community.

I had considered asking several politicians that I know if they would like the endorsement of a motorcycle rights organization or motorcycle club. I can see it now "Senate candidate endorsed by outlaw motorcycle gang". It is one thing to make friends with people who are yearning to be elected officials, it is quite another to realize the law enforcement has a key to the back door of the capital.

I was sitting here today trying to teach my hands to move like they used to when it occurred to me that I had been in my room all day. I recently read a quote about depression, a famous actor said "depression is a mother fucker, it wants to get you alone in a room and kill you". So I thought I'd better get up and do something, anything, because that mother fucker wants me dead. I've survived too many motorcycle wrecks, serious health problems, even being hit by a truck while walking, to let a bad feeling take my life. When I was a young man I had a girlfriend who told me about her suicide attempt, and I thought that if my life ever got so bad that someone had to die because of it I would find that fucker and kill them myself. So next time you go out riding crank it up a notch, get some extra wind for those of us who are not able to ride at this time. I'll be joining you as soon as I can.

under a cover and hasn't been started since February. As you all can imagine this is worse than torture, but I simply cannot use my hands well enough yet to control it. My left leg is not able to shift the gears until I can make it work again or at least arrange a new way to do it. Still Ray lays in a hospital bed fighting for consciousness because try as we might we cannot control the weather, and rain makes the roads slippery. I wonder sometimes where that fine line is that once crossed there is no return. I've been told that I've cross that line several times, in 2008 my time of death was called by doctors. It was the only way they could justify doing what is essentially an experimental surgery, they had to let me die because they couldn't contact my next of kin for permission. Last Friday night a dear friend was going home and some idiot decided to do a U-turn in front of him and then as the friend swerved to miss his ass the moron moved over in front of his motorcycle again. Sometimes it seems that death stalks us. In our community we attend too many funerals, we visit too many hospitals. And yet we throw our leg over that bike fire it up and ride. The future be damned, riding is our life. We can no more imagine a future without the wind in our faces than we can imagine life without breath in our lungs.

Summer Riding Tips You Should Know!! Use your own headlight and those of other traffic to keep an eye on the road surface. It is more difficult at night to see the patch of sand or something that fell out of a car or truck.

The distance between you and the vehicle in front becomes even more important at night Give yourself room to react.

By Jim Silk State Safety Officer

NIGHT RIDING in the warm Arizona summer

Quite often we're going to have to ride at night. After all, it is dark 50 percent of the time.

Dusk is really the worst time, when people's eyes are adjusting from daylight to headlights. Be especially careful just after sunset.

Usually it is advisable to slow down a little when riding at night, especially on any sort of winding road.

Have a clear face shield without scratches or go with clear glasses a scratched shield can create light reflection, which might confuse you; two headlights can look like four, and you don't know who is coming from where. One of the biggest hazards at night may be a "who" that is someone coming from a few hours of drinking. Be especially alert for drivers and vehicles doing odd things, like weaving in and out of traffic, and give them lots of room. Its unfortunate that some people just can't drive. HANDLING SPECIAL SITUATIONS... that's right you’re special too

In the best of all worlds the temperature would always be 80 degrees, the wind would be at our backs, and no emergencies would arise Since it is a slightly imperfect world we live in, we should be prepared for whatever happens.

EMERGENCY BRAKING, SOMEBODY TOP ME!

Sometimes you have to stop as quickly as possible. Here are some tips on how to get you and your motorcycle halted pronto:

Apply both brakes to their maximum, just short of locking them up. Practice in an open, good-surfaced place, such as a clean parking lot.

Keep the motorcycle upright and traveling in a straight line; and look where you're going, not where you've just been.

You don't want to lock the front brake. If the wheel does chirp, release the brake for a split second, then immediately re-apply without locking it up. If your rear wheel locks up, do not release the brake. If your handlebars are straight, you will skid in a straight line, which is all right. You've got a more important priority and that is to get stopped! Read on and we will talk more about "slides". BRAKING WHILE LEANED INTO A CURVE... WHO DOES THIS???

You can brake (with both brakes) while leaned over, but you must do it gradually and with less force than if the bike is standing up straight.

For maximum braking efficiency in an emergency (when traffic and roadway conditions permit), stand the bike up straight; brake hard. You know your driving way to fast to keep letting this happen.

COPING WITH A SKIDDER... NOT A GOOD DAY...

A slide that's when your heart leaps up to your throat because your wheels have lost traction! You might hit a patch of sand on a mountain curve, or a puddle of oil as you're slowing for a stoplight. It's a frightening experience on a motorcycle, but you can handle it.On a fast road, sand-in the-corner slide, steer slightly in the direction of the slide. (If you're leaned to the left and sliding to the right, turn those handlebars a bit towards the right.) Chances are you will clear the patch of sand, the tires will grip the road again, the bike will stand up, and you'll continue on your way.

You should try to avoid this, but sometimes it might be necessary.

AMSAF Awarded $150,000 Grant to Provide Motorcycle Rider Training Scholarships

July 28, 2014, Peoria, Arizona – The Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF) announces the award of a $150,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (AZGOHS) and the Arizona Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council (AMSAC). The grant, which demonstrates support for AMSAF’s mission of boosting awareness of motorcyclists while reducing rider fatalities, will be used to provide motorcycle rider training classes to the public through a scholarship program.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity to give out scholarships,” says AMSAF chairman Mick Degn. “This will be the largest thing we’ve been able to do to promote motorcycle safety and awareness and to reduce motorcycle accidents and fatalities. This will allow anyone in the state of Arizona to apply for, and

receive, motorcycle training,” said Degn. “Their only cost is a $50 non-refundable co-pay.” Saving money, saving lives

A basic rider’s course can cost a motorcyclist in Arizona up to $300; however, the AMSAF scholarship will enable riders to obtain necessary safety training with a minimal out-of-pocket investment: a $50 co-pay. Every Arizona motorcycle rider or potential rider is eligible to receive the AMSAF scholarship, and can apply by visiting AMSAF online at www.AMSAF.org.

PAGE 14 Washington Weekly Updates July 18, 2014 Highway Bill

Senators Corker (R-TN) and Murphy (DCT) have introduced legislation that would increase the federal gas tax twelve cents over the next two years and then levy the tax for inflation. This is a bold idea that is well overdue and unfortunately almost certainly an idea that will be dead on arrival. With the economy still in repair mode raising taxes on just about anything is a deal breaker, let alone on something that just about every american uses. Not only uses but relies upon, we need gasoline to carry out basic everyday tasks and chances are most americans think gasoline is already overpriced.

However, without new revenue to shore up the Highway Trust Fund, it is projected to go bankrupt before the end of this summer’s construction season. The current federal gas tax rate of 18.4 cents per gallon has not been increased since 1993 and is not indexed for inflation, which means it has lost nearly 40% of its purchasing power over the past twenty-one years. The Corker-Murphy proposal would fix the Highway Trust Fund and restore its lost buying power.

The average price of a gallon of gas the last time the fed gas tax was raised was $1.16. Senator Murphy has this to say, “I know raising the gas tax isn’t an easy choice, but we’re not elected to make easy decisions, we’re elected to make the hard ones, This modest increase will pay dividends in the long run and I encourage my colleagues to get behind this bipartisan proposal.” More highway bill stuff...

The highway trust fund is set to run out of money before the end of summer. To address that issue both the house and senate taxing committees have put forth ideas to keep the trust fund alive. Both proposals are markedly different and therefore likely to stall tens of thousands of transportation projects currently underway or scheduled to begin soon. Both proposals fail to address the long term solvency of the trust fund and instead offer a band-aid type approach that kicks the can down the road until about May 2015. No mention in either proposal of a Corker/Murphy type of ideas, which is what really needs to happen. Immigration

Immigration has been dominating congress this week, and for good reason. A bill that reportedly had wide support from house republicans and good portion of the house democrats despite democrat leadership calls for no support, was pulled late on Thursday. The bills sponsor Mario Diaz Balart (R-FL), a cuban american, scalped his proposal without revealing the details after house Republican leadership made the decision to not have a vote on any immigration bills whatsoever before the end of this year. EPA

Late last year the EPA put forth a proposal to lower the amount of ethanol to be produced. This was a departure for the EPA because of how heavily they seemed to want to force non-fossil fuels on America. It seems a little bit of lobbying on behalf of the oil refineries is what did the trick. An investigation into the EPA is being conducted to determine if, in fact,

the EPA bowed to political pressure from the well connected refineries after they lobbied Vice-President Biden. More on this as results come in. ============================ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 23 July 2014

Contact:Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs

Fact or Fiction?

There is a safety community in Washington D.C. that is trying to destroy motorcycling as we know it with lies and half truths. This group is a quasi mixture of government and private safety driven organizations including The Center for Auto Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and the Governors Highway Safety Association to name a few. All of these groups work to influence the government to enact stricter and stricter safety standards and laws. They all do this slightly differently from each other but they do have one common core; they hate motorcycles. If they thought it was remotely possible for one minute that they could eliminate all forms of power driven two wheelers from the traffic landscape, they would try. They try to alarm the general public with misinformation or partial information. They claim that motorcyclist fatalities have been on the rise since 2005 and that is true. Some years see a dip but for the most part motorcyclist fatalities have risen. There was an increase of 36 more fatalities between from 2005 to 2011, 4,576 to 4,612 respectively. However, bike sales and registration numbers are up and that tells a very different story. One that they don't want you to hear. A closer look at the numbers reveals the bulk of the story. They tell us that motorcyclists fatalities are on the rise but they never mention the number of motorcycles on the road, which is also increasing. When we look at the numbers, they show the exact opposite of what the media, the government and the safety-crats are telling us. In fact, motorcycle fatalities are occurring on a much less frequent basis year after year. Since 2005, fatalities have dropped from 73.5 motorcyclists per one hundred thousand registered motorcycles to 54.7. That is an almost 30% drop in fatalities in the exact same time period in which the fear mongers tell you fatalities are a growing problem. All of the numbers used here are directly from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) website. Separating fact from fiction reveals the truth. Over six years 2.2 million motorcycles were added to the roads and we essentially kept the number of fatalities at a near static number. This is not exactly the end of the world, deathtrap-riding scenario that the powers that be would have you believe. All this considering that the only difference is the Motorcycle Riders Foundation created a federal grant program to send money to the states to assist with rider education and share the road type campaigns. We have also relaxed mandatory helmet laws which goes directly against what they would have you believe.

During the August congressional recess remind your elected officials that since 2005, we have had states repeal helmet laws and have watched fatalities drop. The only significant change to the motorcycle safety world other than more motorcycles, is the National Highway Traffic Administrations motorcycle safety grant program. The same program that was supported by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. This fund has dispensed money to every state and is used for

MASTERLINK SEPTEMBER 2014 motorcycle rider education and share the road campaigns. In order to continue the fund we need Congress to pass another transportation bill. Please take advantage of the upcoming congressional recess by contacting your member of congress, attending events and town hall type meetings. Urge them to get to work on the highway bill. =========================== Washington Weekly Updates July 25th, 2014

Its been a slow week for Congress, with most of the energy in the room being sucked into immigration issues and foreign affairs. Both of which are important, but it leaves me with very little to wrap up. Checkpoint Bill

The House checkpoint bill (H.R. 1861) is up to 51 co-sponsors and the Senate version (S. 2078) has four. Black Box Privacy Bills

The House version (H.R. 1462) has 17 co-sponsors and the Senate version (S. 1925) has 24. Ethanol Bill

The bill that we support with the ethanol viability study (H.R. 875) has 24 cosponsors. The more popular ethanol bill (H.R. 1462) is an all out ban of E-15 bill and it has 79 co-sponsors. The Senate version of that bill (S. 344) has 5 cosponsors. August Recess

Use the upcoming August recess to attend a town hall or have a sit down with your elected officials at the federal level, when they are back home. It’s an easy way to get in a visit without having to come to D.C. Contact your local district office for schedules. You can't make this stuff up

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (CBS Cleveland) – Usually when someone says “Jesus take the wheel” it’s meant to help them through a rough patch in life. But police say an Indiana woman took the phrase literally on July 11th, when she took her hands off the steering wheel as she was driving. The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette reports 25-year-old Prionda Hill told authorities she let go of the wheel because “God told her he would take it from here.” Unfortunately for Anthony Olivery, her car veered off the road and slammed into his motorcycle, throwing him to the ground. Then the car ran over him. “When I looked at that bumper and looked at that tire, I told myself, today is the day you die,” he told the paper. The accident broke all of Olivery’s ribs on his left side, cut his spleen, bruised his kidney and caused severe injuries to his left arm and leg. Hill kept on going, according to court records, hitting a pickup truck twice and only stopping when her car crashed into an island between two fast food restaurants several blocks away from where she struck Olivery. Officials say she told officers she had a prescription for Vicodin. Though still in constant pain from the accident, Olivery, an experienced rider, told the Journal-Gazette he is grateful it

wasn’t worse. “You have no idea, even though how badly I was beaten up, at that point how ecstatic I was that I was still alive, he said.

Hill was arrested and charged with failure to stop after an accident and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. ==========================

The United States Congress has agreed on a temporary patch for the highway trust fund, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. The Senate agreed to the House version of the temporary funding fix for the highway trust fund.

The fix came just hours before the United States Department of Transportation would have had to cut off payments for highway construction projects and mass transit programs. These are some common beliefs that riders have about motorcycle safety: “The biggest danger is car drivers. I “The kids on sport bikes are the ones who get into crashes. I “It’s only riders who don’t wear helmets that die in crashes.

When a crash happens, there is no way to predict what part of you will hit or slide on the ground. Be prepared by protecting your head, body, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Summer Riding Tips You Should Know!! (continued)

Should you hit a slippery bit while you're braking for a stop sign, and one or both wheels lock up, you want to get those wheels rolling right away. Release the brakes for an instant, then re-apply a little more gently. You want those tires to have traction.Speaking of tires,,,ya buy a cheap tire you get a cheap ride just as Jeff Albers about his 6k mile tire!At higher speeds, when traction is good and the rear wheel slides when braking hard, do not release the rear brake. If your back end is sliding sideways because the tire is on a slick spot and simply spinning, ease off on the throttle. A spinning wheel provides no more control than a locked wheel. You might be in one of

those 10 kph parking lot scenarios, a mild, low-speed slide when your front wheel starts to go out from under you. A foot on the ground may keep the bike upright and the rubber side down. This is not an easy thing to do, and should only be done if all else fails.Watch for sand spots in the road, and if its raining that white paint is oil on the road here, avoid it at all cost!We want all riders to be safe,as a ABATE member continue to share your safety information with everyone you know, lets avoid accidents when ever we can. A Little Extra Care Might Save a Biker's Life

Reprinted from http://hamptonroads.com By Kathy Adams VIRGINIA BEACH

June 3 was like any other Tuesday for me.

I went to the pharmacy and then headed to The Pilot’s Town Center office. I was almost there when the other cars and trucks on Virginia Beach Boulevard started moving over. Police had blocked off the two right lanes because of a crash. As I passed I spotted what I most dreaded: a motorcycle and what looked like blood on the pavement.

“Please, God, don’t let me recognize that bike,” I prayed. It could be my fiancé’s or belong to any of the bikers we call friends.

This time, it was a maroon HarleyDavidson with chrome accents. The rider, a stranger to me, ended up in a hospital with critical injuries after striking a sport-utility vehicle that crossed into its path, police said. The SUV driver got off easy by comparison with a failure-to-yield ticket, which

carries at worst a $250 fine.

Another motorcyclist died two days later after a crash with an SUV on Colley Avenue in Norfolk. Yet another died the following Sunday after a pickup on Interstate 664 in Newport News swerved to avoid slowing traffic and struck her motorcycle, ejecting her from the seat. The truck’s driver even left the scene, Virginia State Police said. Troopers later charged a woman with felony hit-and-run.

The story is all too common in Hampton Roads, especially in Virginia Beach, especially when the weather gets warm.

There were 488 motorcycle crashes in the seven cities last year, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles. A third of them were in Virginia Beach. And 32 percent of those 488 resulted in deaths or serious injuries. If, like me, you ride a motorcycle or love someone who does, those stories and those numbers fill you with dread.

My biker – my fiancé, Darrell – is thoughtful and funny and one-of-a kind. He’s the

kind of guy who leaves cash on the fridge so I can buy lunch when I’m tight on money before payday. The kind of guy who doesn’t get mad at me for leaving clothes and shoes all over our bedroom. The kind of guy who always says yes when friends ask for help moving, even when it’s 100 degrees outside.

pray I never do.

But sometimes it terrifies me.

Motorcyclists have to do their part, too. I know the crashes are sometime their fault if they’re going too fast or weaving in and out of traffic.

He’s the man I spent 28 years looking for and he loves riding his motorcycle. I would never ask him to stop, even though I know it’s dangerous. It’s part of what makes him, him. It terrifies me because I know people in much larger vehicles are not always paying attention. They’re texting or talking or doing any number of things that distract them from watching out for other cars and motorcycles. I’ve driven by the wrecks on my way to work, such as the June 3 crash. I’ve seen the police news releases announcing the dead riders will be named after their next of kin is notified.

The rider from the June 3 crash was still hospitalized last week, two weeks after the collision. How terrible for him and his family.

Every biker is important to someone. They’re husbands, fathers, friends and fiancés. So this is my plea for them and for my biker: Please be careful driving. Put your phone down. Check your blind spot twice. Look out for motorcycles, which can be easy to overlook.

But, in my experience, it’s more often the case that another driver isn’t paying attention. And motorcyclists have far more to lose. A fender-bender with an SUV can be a fatality on a motorcycle. That doesn’t have to happen if we all just try a little harder.
