THE RISKS TO YOUR BUSINESS With the ever increasing demands to comply with stringent health and safety and hygiene regulations, the last thing you need is the cost, hassle and embarrassment of unwanted intruders in your workplace...
Flies Flies in a farmyard may not constitute a health hazard, but even a small number of flies in your restaurant can pose a threat to public health. Houseflies and blowflies are potential vectors for a number of diseases including gastroenteritis, dysentery and tuberculosis and are a common cause of food poisoning in the catering industry. Flies cause annoyance to your customers and their constant presence could drive away trade.
Bed Bugs Due to the increase in worldwide travel, bed bugs are fast becoming a major pest in the UK. Those of you in the hotel or short-term letting industry are particularly at risk. Although traditionally associated with poor hygiene standards, an infestation can be introduced into even the cleanest of environments via clothing, luggage or goods. Once established, bed bug infestations can be difficult to eradicate and, if left unchecked, a population will soon spread to adjoining accommodation.
Fleas Although more often associated with domestic premises inhabited by cats and dogs, flea infestations also occur in public buildings and open-plan offices. This is usually because they have been introduced via a person’s clothing or baggage. Fleas are a particular problem in the public housing sector, with workers often finding flea infestations in properties that have been left vacant for long periods (fleas are triggered into activity by the vibration of footsteps). They can also act as an intermediate host of canine tapeworm, which can also infect humans.
Cockroaches Cockroaches are known to carry diseases. According to fossil records, these insects have remained virtually unchanged for 200 million years. They’re born survivors! Although originating in tropical climates, they’ve acclimatised to cooler environments and can rapidly reproduce to epidemic proportions. Cockroaches are classified as major pests in the food industry and, if found in catering establishments, can warrant closure until the infestation is eliminated. This could cause irreparable damage to your reputation.
Fleas cause costly delays to your business: your employees are highly likely to refuse to work in infested buildings until the problem has been fully resolved.
Mosquitos Biting midges and mosquitoes in the UK are not known for carrying disease, although the bites can cause allergic reactions resulting in secondary infection if persistently scratched.
Wasps Many people fear wasps, hornets and bees because of the risk of being stung. For some individuals, a sting can trigger an allergic reaction that requires hospital treatment and, in extreme cases, can even be life-threatening. Wasp nests are frequently found in and around the roofs of domestic and commercial buildings. Apart from being a nuisance, they can cause additional problems if you wish to carry out maintenance work a plumber or electrician may refuse to work in a roof space that has a nest.
Ants Ants are considered more of an irritation than a danger. However, Pharaoh ants can carry a wide range of disease-causing pathogens in hospitals. Garden ants are a common problem in both domestic and commercial catering areas and often contaminate food products. This can lead to your being prosecuted under food safety legislation, which will result in financial loss as well as a tarnished reputation.
Product Pests There are a wide range of stored-product insects, but they all share the ability to infest and degrade food commodities such as stored grains, pulses, nuts, cereals and dried fruits. Bulk storage facilities can be particularly badly affected because insects spend the majority of their time inside the produce. Although not generally thought to be disease carriers, the presence of insect bodies in food products is highly likely to provoke complaints from your customers. If left untreated, infested raw food grade produce can be reduced to animal feed grade, resulting in financial loss. There is also a ‘downtime’ cost for you to consider for example, while maintenance is carried out on machinery that has become clogged with webbing from insect larvae.
Textile Pests Textile pests come in the form of moths and beetles; the larvae cause damage to fabrics and natural furs. These insects can be a major setback for clothing or soft furnishing manufacturing and storage facilities, museums and shops. Having a favourite jumper damaged by moths is one thing, but having a warehouse full of expensive designer garments chewed up is a big financial problem, particularly if contaminated stock has also infested a customer’s premises.
We have used Abate pest control services for several years, and find them to be a thoroughly professional organisation, with prompt efficient responses to any problems we come across. Chris Wright Company Secretary/Financial Controller RBR (Crops) Ltd
LIFE CYCLE ... ABATE SOLUTIONS At Abate, we take a proactive approach to solving pest problems by offering you advice on how to make your premises less attractive to insects. This helps to reduce the chance of any pest problems occurring in the first place. We refer to this as ‘integrated pest management’ and it’s particularly useful in areas where the use of insecticides is considered to be a last resort (organic food premises for example).
Life-Cycle Planning In order to detect potential pest issues early, we recommend you have regular inspections at your premises, spread out over the course of the year. This also ensures that any surviving insects from previous treatments can be eradicated later in their life cycle. You can pre-book your inspections to ensure effective control is maintained all year round. All of our services are tailored to suit the needs of your individual business. Different insects have different life cycle spans and some increase and decrease in certain seasons. The treatments we offer you will depend on what we find.
Contract Service Objective A commercial contract with Abate Pest Management is an agreement between both parties as to the most cost effective pest control solution over an agreed period of time. For every contract we will install a Service Report Pack to each of the premises we service, detailing contract deliverables and reports. On each site inspection, treatment or audit we will identify and report evidence of any pest infestation. We will discuss the issues and take the necessary action to eliminate the identified pest problem. A full risk assessment of the proposed work is carried out before any contract work commences. We will record the amount and the location of any pesticide used and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) information will be supplied in our Service Report Pack. All emergency call-outs are dealt with usually within 24 hours and will be free of charge for specified pests. All remedial follow-up treatments against insects will be carried out until the issue is under control. We will continue to offer our expert guidance on all matters relating to pest prevention and hygiene. We also recommend that we have regular contract reviews to review performance and service trends, reviewing our management reports that are supplied.
