Managing aging equipment
For many shipping companies, the implications of not managing their assets can be costly, in some cases costing tens of thousands of pounds through operational downtime.
Both large and small operators are now beginning to realise that electrical and automation plant and systems can not last forever as technology evolves at a rapid pace. In addition to the systems, knowledge and skills become rare for obsolescent plant. They are realising that if the systems are maintained regularly throughout the life cycle then they can keep abreast of the latest software and hardware updates. Life cycle management model ABB utilises a life cycle management model, comprising four-phases - “active”, “classic”, “limited” and “obsolete”. The model helps companies recognize each phase of their electrical and automation equipment and determine what level of support is needed on existing installations. Products in the “Classic” phase are not actively promoted although they still have comprehensive support. During the “Limited” phase, equipment is no longer available for purchase. As such services offered are limited. Spare parts, maintenance and repair services are available as long as materials can be obtained.

Challenge Limited life cycle services – Manage the lifecycle of ship equipment to optimize Caution! A drive entering the Limited or Obsolete phase has limited repair options. This service may result time in unpredictable process downtime. To avoid this possibility, the drive should be kept in the Active or Classic phase.

For more information please contact: Life cycle appraisal ABB Limited ABB has devised a series of life cycle services that protect Daresbury Park the operation of critical electrical plant and systems and Daresbury extends the life of a vessel by many years. With these life Warrington cycle services, properly maintained systems can keep ahead Cheshire of the latest software and hardware updates and ensure that WA4 4BT a company remains competitive. Certain products, such as transformers, have no life cycle map and are simply replaced. Other electrical plant such as variable-speed drives, automation and switchgear can be mapped throughout their entire life cycle. Assessment of asset life cycle allows customers to know the exact status of all equipment; predict any problems with spares; plan maintenance investments; and improve long term planning of capital and operational expenditure.
