Brief 13 _ Artful Funk

Context

A night of entertainment, music and dance in Glasgow during March being arranged and hosted by students I’m acquainted with. All proceeds from the event go to the Wildhearts Foundation charity.

Target Audience

The target audience for this event will be predominantly 18-25, college / university students. A big turnout is expected, especially as it’s for charity.

Brief

Create an easy to produce, and effective A3/A2 poster that promotes the night of entertainment at Independent Bar, in Glasgow. Communication is key, as is an alternative take on the traditional gig poster.

Brief 13 _ Artful Funk

For this brief I wanted to create a communicative gig poster that stepped away from the norm and only communicated what needed to be said and nothing more. As this is a poster for charity we had the luxury to just focus on the content, and no external ads or sponsors.

Dizzee Rascal

Dizzee Rascal’s Fix Up Look Sharp is a huge reference in terms of the visuals, the levels and especially the colour pallette. As said earlier, I wanted the poster to be as contrasting as possible - yellow and black is always a strong choice in this regard.

High Contrast Music Videos

As this is a music event, and I wanted an alternate take on the music poster I looked into music videos with a strong black and white contrast, that would translate well to the kind of poster I was aiming to produce.

This is a quick turnaround brief, an afternoon, to a day. Consequently the main design decision was colours, and getting the type to sit right. Above are a few quick variations sent to the client, the client picked the last one and we went ahead with that.

The final logo is simply just Helvetica Bold, it’s as simple as you can get but I feel it suited the idea for the poster I had in mind, and glad the client agreed too.

The logo can easily be applied as handstamps, as it can for tickets.

A strong focus was on hierarchy of information and easy legibility.

I worked on a few short idents that open the movie, with no copy, and one version with copy. Acting as an advert for the event and the charity the money goes to. This provides a layer of legitimacy, and added promotion on platforms such as Youtube.
