A Sex Worker's Tale

Page 1

A SEX WORKER’S TALE In 1963, renowned feminist Gloria Steinem wrote an article for Show magazine, exposing the inner workings of Playboy. Written from a first person perspective, the article followed her footsteps as she went on a journey as an undercover Playboy bunny. She believed that the sexual revolution couldn’t be successful if only men were allowed to define it. Although the article exposed the negative side of sex work, we have come a long way since then. This zine aims to break down the negative stigma surrounding sex work, by exploring Onlyfans with the help of Molly-Mae, a content creator.

Why did you start onlyfans?

I like taking pictures of myself and I needed the money. I started it because I wasn’t making enough money at my other job. I needed some extra income and I thought about doing it for ages. I’ve always just loved sending nudes and I was like you know what, there’s this thing where I can send nudes and profit off it so why would I not do this.

How does onlyfans make you feel? Ever since I started it I feel way more confident in myself, and I don’t really care what other people think because I’m making money off me and being me, so like people can’t say shit to me. It makes me feel like a bad bitch.

How have people in your life reacted? It varies. My family were very accepting of it because they’ve always known what I’m like and they kind of just saw it coming I guess. They’ve always been accepting and fine with it as long as I’m happy and safe. There are members of my family who don’t agree with it at all and say I’m setting a bad example to my younger siblings, which I don’t agree with. I was surprised by my manager’s reactions; all of my managers have been fine with it.

What do you think about instagram’s nipple ban? What’s the difference between a man’s nipple and a woman’s nipple? It’s just the same thing. Instagram are cracking down on small accounts and sex workers who are trying to make a business out of something, and they’re not taking down all of these huge celebrity accounts that can post whatever they want. It’s just extremely frustrating, not to mention all of the other disgusting stuff which doesn’t get taken down but sex workers are just being attacked.

What would you say to someone who doesn’t agree with onlyfans? First of all, just make sure that they actually want to do it, because obviously once you’ve uploaded a picture of yourself to the internet there’s kind of no going back. I feel like a lot of people think that it’s easy money and they don’t actually take into account anything that goes into it. they just think they can upload a picture of themselves and make loads of money. So, I would say actually look into more, decide if it’s something you want to do and be aware that your family will find out, but then after that only do what you’re comfortable with, don’t feel pressured by customers and use Twitter. There are people out there that will try to dox you and I haven’t had anyone do it to me yet. I use my real name, I use pictures on my Twitter that I use on my Instagram, so people could easily reverse image search me and find me, BUT I’m open about it with my job and family. So, if anyone did try to dox me they couldn’t, but it’s a big risk with it and that’s why I said people in your life WILL find out about it.

What’s your advice to anyone who wants to start onlyfans? The argument for me is if you’re watching porn you should be paying for it, because porn is a luxury and people are putting work in for that porn. You shouldn’t just be going to Pornhub, which is fair enough now it’s been more regulated, but it hasn’t been regulated in the past. People’s rape scenes have been on there, people’s revenge porn’s been on there, and people are just watching it for free because it’s free and I think it’s gross. There are more positives to Onlyfans because it’s one on one with that creator, if you love that creator then you can get to know them more, you can get to talk to them on a more personal level. You can’t do those things with Pornhub so you’re paying for it, but it’s a luxury and you’re getting added benefits.
