Age-Regenerated

Words by Phoebe Hallas

S

ince when does being eligible for a bus pass mean we have to slow down? The older generation are becoming more powerful and youthful than ever, and in recent years the ‘golden oldies’ have become harder to beat. They have surpassed the baby boomers as the key regeneration and have even earned the right to a new label- Boomers. You ‘Boomers’ are at the prime of your life, you know what you want and now the world is working to deliver. You may be getting older, but your fashion and life style choices are certainly getting younger every year. Nancys are at the forefront of fashion. The fashion industry is buzzing about the concept of an older generation of advertising and its impact. You’ve got the life experience, your kids have fled the nest and your enjoying life to the maximum. Why does being over 65 mean that you can’t have more fun than you’ve ever had? Date those silver foxes, buy those key designer items, go to that hip hop class, it is prime time. A recent article on WGSN (2015) states that the importance of the older generation is not only in the fashion industry but also the wider world. Fashion brands are seeing the importance of the older consumer and your experiences, and are encompassing this in business is becoming more popular than ever before “in an age where ephemerality and superficiality dominate many aspects of contemporary culture, there is an emerging counter view that recognises strength in wisdom”. The cliche that getting old means becoming ancient, frail and boring has been blown out the window. It is the older generation who have both the intelligence, experience and depth that is becoming more recognisable as traits of valuable role models, compared to the ‘Katie Prices’ of the world. Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent and Joan Didon for Celine are just a few of the older models

seen in this seasons marketing strategies and have fast become some of the most talked about adverts of the season. A WGSN report (2015) suggests that the reason behind advertisers using such women is down to a recent rebellion surrounding the shallow nature of internet culture. It is the boomer generation that bring the depth that companies want. Brands are finally recognising your spending power, ladies. Campaign UK (2014) found that 30% of the UK population is now over the age of 50 and and control 80% of the wealth. With levels of unemployment in youth at the highest for 20 years its easy to understand why brands are beginning to rebrand and focus on the older generation. The mature consumer group have the highest disposable incomes, and greater decision making power (Campaign UK, 2014). WGSN (2015) revealed that in a survey you Nancy’s felt that advertising portrayed the mature British consumer in a negative way; with 75% of these adding that there was little or no advertising related to you in any way. As a huge part of consumer spending comes from the older generation, marketers have realised that they need to move away from the younger consumer group and stop stereotyping the lives of older individuals. After all, you ladies are not into slowing down. Retiring and entering your sixties no longer means you have to stop doing what everyone else is. The boomers are using this time to rejuvenate themselves and try new things, date new people, have fun and not let their age affect their life choices. No one said that having fun stops when you leave your twenties, in fact it seems you Nancys are feeling more fresh and active than ever. You are using life experience in your favour and feeling better than ever doing so! “L’Oreal get it. They realised a decade ago that if all they are trying to do is make every woman look like she was 23, that is not going to work. So it slowly moved from 30 to 40 to 50 and now its at

It celebrated the latest trends. It is you Nancys by the individuals it portrays’’ who understand personal style. (WGSN, 2015). Furthermore You know that you need to dress

for you, not dress like everyone else. You’re sophisticated, chic and stylish without following the crowd and these quality’s are finally being recognised. Renowned Photographer Nick Night (cited in the Guardian, 2014) “We don’t live in such a youth-based culture as we did 50 years ago”. His belief behind the success of older models lies in the cultural change seen in recent years. Karpf (2014) places further prominence on the use of older generation modelling being down to the longevity in their career. They are proving to the world that careers have substance and can be successful much further into your life than your twenties. Social conventions surrounding the mature generation have changed phenomenally in recent years, growing old is no longer synonymous with slowing down and sitting in a chair all day, drinking tea. ‘Boomers’ are doing things even the younger generation don’t dare to do. The Nancys of the world are finally getting the recognition they deserve, with the world finally seeing you as a force to be reckoned with and not a feeble old granny. Your experience is finally seeing you at the top. Everyone wants to see you, know you and be you. Getting older is only allowing you to open more doors, exploring the world around you and expressing yourselves through ways you never thought possible. You Nancys rule the world, and nothing is getting in your way. After all, our favourite age is now. |

Rise of the Older Model Words by Megan Bradley

I

f there is one thing that has taken the fashion industry by storm this year, it has to be the focus on diversity that has themed every fashion show around the world, as well as some of the top fashion campaigns too. Designers have been scouting models who lay outside the generic ideals of what people perceive to be the ‘model’ look, and the result has been one that requires celebrating in our eyes. It’s everywhere; Celine’s campaign starring Joan Didon as their new muse, American Apparels new campaign featuring Jacky O’Shaughnessy, and Helen Mirren taking the role as the new face of L’Oreal Cosmetics. While this new theme of diversity has seen models of all shapes an sizes, as well as disabilities, race, gender, and so on, becoming the new faces of fashion, we here at Nancy, as advocates for the older generation and sheer love for their general fabulousness, want to focus on how fantastic we think it is that the Nancys of the world are getting their time to shine! In our opinion, it should have been much sooner, but we digress.

the most valuable of the business, having the most experience, a wealth of knowledge, and generally knowing the industry like the back of their hands, after-all they’ve been there since they themselves were young and eager 20 years olds. Yet, the fashion industry never followed suit… that is until now. This 21st century world we are in is quickly becoming one where peoples differences is what makes them beautiful, and equality and diversity is what the generations of this time are striving for most. And rightly so we think! Just like in any other industry, older models are valuable to the fashion industry, not just because they are experienced, have a wealth of knowledge and life-skills, and know the industry like the back of their hands, but because they represent the new ideals of our society, the image of equality, diversity, and acceptance, and most all, that beauty isn’t reserved for young skin and tight bums and tums.

and lifestyle publication, that’s specifically tailored to you. There is no judgment on our pages, no patronizing articles about looking younger, as if it were the only thing of importance to you, but rather plenty of content that aims to encourage embracing who you are now and celebrating your mature self and the world you live and love in now, instead of mourning for who you were 20 years ago. After all, we like to keep in mind, that age is nothing in the face of fashion, and our Nancys are living proof of that. So keep your eye out for Nancys on the catwalks, magazines, campaigns, and posters, because they’re sure going to be there, especially this year when everyone is jumping at the chance to show how model diversity is absolutely the way forward and is what will strengthen the industry for many years to come. We cannot wait to see more of our own Nancys making their mark on the fashion catwalks, and we’d love to hear your opinions on this new movement too! Do you think modeling and fashion is reserved for the youthful? Or is this new trend one step too far?

So we, here at Nancy HQ, are extremely proud to be representing this positive change in the industry, by bringing you a publication that aims to provide you wonderful Nancys In any other industry, the senior of our world with everything Let us know via our email: members are always viewed as you could want from a fashion asknancy@nancymedia.co.uk |

The Statement Words by Abbi Minchin

pring/Summer 2014 saw statement jewellery grace the runways, editorials and street style. However, we here at Nancy magazine believe that there is no need to fix something that is not broken. And that is why we are taking statement jewellery into Spring/Summer 2015, and making it bigger and better than ever! The key to keeping your wardrobe exciting is chunky (Diu, 2013) that makes an impact with the simple items you already own. Whether you want to create an attention-grabbing outfit or are simple interesting with the ornate designs found in statement jewellery, we are here to guide you. This is why our Spring issue is dedicated to the statement necklace - in a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and designs; all to lift our spirits! (Staff, 2013) Now, there are many types of statement necklaces on the market right now. There are necklaces that you can layer up to create a personalised style; wide chokers/bibs that demand attention; draping necklaces for a classy look; colourful beads for a bohemian feel; pearls for class or silver chains (Staff, 2013) for that 1970’s Punk that we know is in there somewhere. There is something for everyone, so tell us, which tickles your fancy? Although this is the Spring issue, statement jewellery is not

just for the warmer seasons. No, they are investments that can be used all year round, which means getting your moneys worth! Pair them with chunky knits and high necklines in the winter (Diu, 2013); wear with a simple cardigan in autumn or brighten up a summer dress in the hotter months. However you want to wear it is perfect. Luckily the fashion industry embraces all personalities to provide a statement necklace perfect for you. Now, running around shops and searching the web for the perfect necklace seems a little tedious, right? Don’t worry, we here at Nancy HQ have picked out our top picks, in a range of prices, for you to choose (see pg.) for any or all occasions! When taking photographs of the older women in our lives, we came across many complimenting the array of necklaces we had for them to try on and play around with. One lady in particular was surprised by how well they worked with her outfit: “I would never think to buy a necklace like these, but they completely change your outfit, and make it much better!” We most definitely agree. And as you will see in this issues editorial all of the women who participated look beautiful in the necklaces, which can be somewhat intimidating at first glance. Meet our family, ladies! |

Fabulous Fashionistas “You think about death, but you choose life”

Words by Abbi Minchin 26

T

he Channel 4 documentary, released in 2013, follows six extraordinary women as they explore the art of ageing (Wellpark Productions, 2013) and walk us through their individual sense of style. Sue Kreitzman, Bridget Sojourner, Daphne Selfe, Gillian Lynne, Jean Woods and Baroness Trumpington are all over the age of 70 (with an average age of 80), but they do not “dress or behave like little old ladies”, Sue Bourne, director and producer of the film, examines. “They stand out from the crowd and make an effort to do so” (Channel 4, 2013), which is why they are all Nancys that we believe deserve a spotlight. In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Bourne reiterates that “anyone can be like anyone in the film” and that all it takes is a “state of mind” to live a fulfilled later life (Kreitzman, S. 2013).

You are first introduced to Bridget Sojourner (larger font, in bold), with her soft voice and innocent smile. At 75, Bridget is the epitome of budget style, and has the cheapest wardrobe out of all the ladies featured. She buys all of her clothing from charity shops, and will not spend over £3 on any one item. She did make an exception for her Doc Martens boots though, which came in at a steep £4. “I feel good on relatively little money” (Channel 4, 2013), says Bridget, which proves to all that you do not need to spend a large portion of your pension to look fabulous. Take a leaf out of Bridget’s book and pop to your local charity shop sometime this week, you never know what you will find. If that is not your idea of a good day out, then this issue of Nancy magazine features some inexpensive star buys, although they are not as low as charity shop prices, unfortunately! “How I look is to do with my identity and the fun of it, it has nothing to do with looking younger.” – Bridget (Channel 4, 2013) A large part of Bridget’s life is campaigning. In her old age, she has actively campaigned against “ageism”, something she has strong opinions on. In the documentary, we see her fighting for older models to be more prominently featured in fashion magazines. She gets turned down multiple times by different magazines and agencies, as apparently “peoples dreams are based on” being younger (Kreitzman, S. 2013). Despite the rejection, she does not seem fazed, because for Bridget, it is not about becoming a supermodel. All she wants is to “inspire people that getting older is not a bad thing”. But alas “the fashion industry is not quite ready” (Channel 4, 2013) for these lovely ladies, comments Bridget with a sad smile. Since filming occurred, I do believe things have changed in the modeling world. A multitude of designers and retailers have opened their arms to the older generation and successfully used them to advertise their products. As we see later in the documentary, with Daphne, there was an opportunity for models over the age of 70, but it was not always realistic for all. I, and the other

ladies at Nancy HQ encourage and believe that if modeling is something that you ladies want to do, then you should be given an equal chance. This is something we are hoping to bring you with this magazine in coming issues. Next up is 75-year-old Jean Woods, who is introduced through the story of her husbands passing, causing her to take her life in a different direction (Williamson, C. 2013). This landed her a job at the clothing store GAP, after being encouraged by her son to work somewhere with “a bit more life” (Channel 4, 2013) than a charity shop. Jean was GAP’s oldest employee and worked there for over a year, before deciding to work in a trendy boutique opposite for a change of pace. At the time of filming, she had happily worked there for five year, proving to you, our readers, that retirement is not the only option, and the alternative can sometimes bring more joy. “Just because you are 71, does not mean that you have passed being able to be good and converse with people, and hold down a job”. – Jean (Channel 4, 2013) Jean is clearly interested in style, and “always has been” (Channel 4, 2013). She is inspirational in the way that she dresses for herself, not afraid of what others think, a stigma many struggle with in today’s society. Her street style, as she likes to claim it as, consists of different brands (including

29

Topshop), depending on what she sees and what she likes. Her lips pinch at the thought of someone saying “oh, you do look smart” (Channel 4, 2013), which elicited a giggle from me. Gillian is an 87-year-old dancer, actor, choreographer and director, after beginning her career as a ballet dancer in the 1940’s. When asked what keeps her going through such an active lifestyle, she replies that she “likes life” and that her job brings her joy (Channel 4, 2013); something so simple yet so important for a positive frame of mind. We see Gillian run a class and participate in exercises that made us at Nancy HQ cringe at the thought of our leg stretching so far and our heads being that close to the floor. And a little bit jealous, if we’re honest. Due to her occupation, she tends to spend most of her life in leggings, in a range of her favourite colours: black, grey and brown. She loves to wear miniskirts, when she can, and similar to Jean, “doesn’t give a toss” (Channel 4, 2013) what people think about her.

is clearly saddening for both. However, when asked if this is experience was a wake up call that will make her change the way she lives life, Gillian replied “no, I don’t think so” with a cheeky smile (Channel 4, 2013). However, it is a wake up call for viewers who more than likely view these incredible women as invincible after seeing the lives they lead. It is a startling concept that these women are not immune to illness. Just like the rest of us, they are in fact human.

After being an extra in film and modelling for most of her life, Daphne Selfe was ready to settle down after the death of her husband. At 85, she is Britain’s oldest model (Nicholson, R. 2013), after being rediscovered at 70 years old and signed to a top modelling agency. When asked why she believes the fashion industry chose her, she replied that she’s lucky that the camera likes her, because that is not the case for everyone. Oh, and her hair. Her long silver locks, uncommon in the older generation, are her trademark. She is described as “patient, easy “I think you have to pit yourself to work with and a natural in against the ageing process, you front of the camera” by director mustn’t let it in.” Sue Bourne (Channel 4, 2013), – Gillian (Channel 4, 2013) making her the perfect client for agencies. Near the end of the film, we see Gillian relaxing in the South of France after a 3 week stint with “You must get on with life and pneumonia, in which she was enjoy it as much as you can. terribly ill. The thought of death, After all, you don’t get a second and in turn leaving her husband chance!” (who is 27 years her junior), – Daphne (Channel 4, 2013)

30

Sue Kreitzman is the most extreme dresser of the group and, at 73, the youngest as well. After writing cookbooks for a living and traveling around the world, she one day took off in a different direction. Instead of writing out her newest book, she drew a mermaid, became obsessed with drawing and abandoned her old life in the kitchen. Now, she is “some kind of weird artist” - her words, not ours (Channel 4, 2013); has her own workshop where she makes art; and curates art shows. While at the same time looking fabulous. Although her clothes may seem anything but simple at first glance, she explains that it is very easy getting dressed in the morning. Her signature look is a black dress, colourful jacket - one of what seems like hundreds in her exciting wardrobe) - a statement piece of jewellery and her faithful Crocs. “Growing old is a privilege, and it’s an adventure.” – Sue (Channel 4, 2013) Sue describes her fashion sense as “eccentric” (Kreitzman, S. 2013) and it is this eccentricity that captures your heart as a viewer. In one of her many television interviews, Sue emphasised that the film proves “we are what we are” (Kreitzman, S. 2013). And Sue is defiantly herself, something that cannot be argued against or criticised. Not that she cares about criticism, as

T

seen in clips of her holding her head high, despite the weight of her earrings, as she walks down the street, receiving a lot of attention from the public and, more often than not, their cameras. Last but not least came Baroness Trumpington. 91 at the time of filming, she is the oldest of the six ladies, and the oldest woman in the House of Lords. As the former Mayor of Cambridge, and now a life peer, she exclaims that she does not “give a damn” if she shocks people (Channel 4, 2013). That much was clear when she was caught giving one of her fellow peers the V sign on camera (Williamson, C. 2013), creating a stir in the media. Despite living on her own she still lives a fairly active day-to-day life, but she definitely does not want to spend that time wandering around clothes shops, entering and exiting changing rooms. No, Baroness Trumpington has found a practical solution to keep herself stylish: catalogue shopping. “It is a rather good way of buying clothes, from your pants to your overcoats, and [is] incredibly reasonably priced” (Channel 4, 2013). Well, what more could you want? “The moment you start letting everything go, is the moment you’re old.” – Baroness (Channel 4, 2013)

he documentary is inspiring, and leaves you with a new outlook on life: a positive outlook. Bourne did a fantastic job at capturing these women as individuals with their own views and beliefs, all of which are aspirational. The differences between the individuals are apparent throughout, but the film ends with the similarity that they share; the “absolute refusal to give in or give up” (Channel 4, 2013), a state of mind that all generations should adopt. Choose life, ladies. |

Silver jewellery has long been associate with class and sophistication, and this necklace is no exception. If you’re a bit weary of paying so much up front just think; if you wore this necklace every other day for a year, it would work out at about 25p a wear! That is something you most definitely cannot argue with, so if you’re on the fence, just buy it! Life’s too short not to have the necklace you want.

For the Outgoing Nancy:

For the Beaded Nancy:

Whether you’re a fan, or just want to own this unique piece, our team at Nancy say ‘go for it!’. This item is perfect for the Nancy who is laid back and just wants to whip something on and still look cute. As the necklace is quite a toned down piece, it just makes it easy to wear; going with pretty much anything! It is also a light piece of jewellery; perfect for warm weather and day time use. This item is worth the money Nancy’s, we can’t see this going out of style anytime soon.

So for you, we have cherry picked the best value for money statement necklaces that will cost you more than a few bob but will most definitely be worth it.

Splurge 34

For the Nancy Who Wants a Drop of Silver: J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams - £20 If you don’t want to make too much of statement with diamonds and flowers, then this beaded beauty might be more suited to you. The fabulous mix of beads and twisted chains makes this a no-fuss statement. The price definitely isn’t fussy either! This would work with outfits for every season, and the great news is you’d only have to wear it a few times to get your money’s worth. What more could you ask for, especially when it comes from one of Debenhams fancy designer ranges.

For Nancy – The Greek Goddess: Next - White And Gold Stone Statement Necklace - £10 This Necklace may not be every Nancy’s taste, but for £10 it could achieve a very exotic look for a small price. Paired with a white linen shirt, you can achieve a bohemian – chic look. Even though this look seems quite ‘summery’, for this price, you could definitely wear it all year round! This piece adds a bit of grace to a simple outfit, working best with nude colours especially Brown and off-white.

For the Pearl Nancy: Accessorize (at Monsoon) - £17 Pearls are an absolute timeless classic for every Nancy, but we realise they might not be to every lady’s taste, so we’ve hunted out this statement pearl beauty with an edge. Not only does the price mean you are paying a mere fraction of the cost of real pearls, but it looks completely high-end too! Pearls never go out of style, and pair them with this stunning silver and diamond detail and you’re good to go for the next few seasons.

For the Subtle Nancy:

For Nancy – The Greek Goddess:

M&S COLLECTION Multi-Strand Stargazer Beaded Necklace & Earrings Set - £15

Matalan - £12 atalan Here at Nancy we love florals all year round, so we saw this statement necklace as no exception. You cannot argue with such a great price for such a stunning piece; the pale pastel colours make it suitable for pairing with pretty much anything already in your wardrobe, and if you love to mix things up why not clash it with a contrasting coloured jumper to really make a statement! Now we don’t tell lies here at Nancy, so yes the price might mean after a few wears the quality does start to deteriorate, but that does not mean it isn’t worth it.

This item is a pure bargain! With this Necklace you get far more for your money with a set of earrings for no extra price – what more could you want on a budget? The mix of pastel colours in this set means it can add slight elegance to a laid back and calm look. With the matching earrings it totally pulls an outfit together. It is a subtle piece of jewellery; quiet minimalistic, perfect for those Nancy’s who do not want that completely bold ‘in–your-face’ piece. Wearing this Necklace with dark clothing contrasts the colour within the necklace allowing the layers to shine.

For Nancys that want to save:

Whilst it’s all well and good being frivolous every now and then, some of you ladies would rather buy necklaces more frequently at a much lower cost. So for you, we’ve picked out our favourite statements on a budget, so that you can enjoy the best of high fashion at the lowest of prices. |

Nancys Take

Hollywood

Helen Mirren 69

Jane Fonda 77

Christine Baranski

Flying the flag for British Nancys, Helen looks flat out fabulous in this Dolce & Gabbana red number with jewel embellishment; emphasising her envious figure. Red on the red carpet most definitely works in this case! Helen is sporting the true red in the best way possible; the deep red complements her complexion whilst not taking too much away from the red lip!

Jane is without a doubt our favourite Hollywood Nancy, so her Golden Globes look just had to be included. This asymmetrical red Versace dress would not work on anyone else, but Jane pulls it off entirely! The award for best Hollywood Nancy is without a doubt won here. The ‘candy apple red’ works wonders in this look; its bold, its bright and we love it! Definitely not tacky in the slightest.

This cut-out burgundy gown looks oh-so classy on Christine. Paired with Fred Leighton jewels and a sleek hair do; whats not to love about this Nancy! This alternative to a red looks beautiful on this Nancy; burgundy has long been recognised as a sophisticated colour, and in this case Christine doesn’t let us down, with the slight cut-outs giving the dress a sexy edge.

N

ancys are fast becoming a global phenomenon of fabulousness, most renowned in Hollywood some might say. The Hills are thriving with many a Nancy, whether it be on the big screen or on the red carpet. With that in mind, at the recent awards season it came as no surprise that fashionistas were popping up everywhere looking more glamorous than ever. Nancys are taking Hollywood by storm, and so here we present to you our top picks of some of the best looks; each very different, all very fabulous!

39

Jane Fonda 77

Meryl Streep 65

Oprah Winfrey 61

Anna Wintour 65

Jane epitomises the height of Nancy glamour wearing a Zuhair Murad jumpsuit with Niwaka jewellery. Everything about this combination screams perfection, proving that a Nancy really can be over seventy and stylish (and even sexy)!

Meryl looked sleek and stunning as ever wearing a Lanvin jacket, skirt and blouse combination. With a monochrome mix paired with drop earrings and killer peep-toe heels, Meryl kept the Nancy name in high esteem.

Although we state that Nancys are over 65, we made an exception for Ms. Winfrey. Oprah is the definition of the elegant Nancy in this stunning pale pink Vera Wang gown. She proves that fabulous past fifty can most definitely be done; with a simple gown speaking volumes.

The fashion queen herself leads Nancys down the red carpet in her pink Oscar De La Renta floor length gown and fur. And let’s be reasonable, no Anna look would be complete without black sunglasses in hand in high esteem.

NANCY Beauty | Celebrity Style Words by Layla Ditchfield

I

t’s no secret that even the most beautiful Hollywood stars who are surrounded by the best of everything (including THE best hair and make-up artists), still go through the same aging process as any normal person, which unfortunately for us all, includes sallow skin and thinning lips. Make-up is a blessing and a curse in disguise. The right products can help you hide all of your insecurities and enhance your features, however getting it wrong can have the opposite effect, transforming your face to make you look much older. Here at Nancy HQ we have teamed up with celebrity make-up artist Lisa Eldridge who has worked with both Hollywood’s oldest sweethearts and it’s up and coming stars. Here we will reveal the top products and tricks that we believe will be perfect for all of our Nancy’s, and also the stars who do it best.

40

Blitz your brows like Meryl Streep

Brighten up your lips like Jane Fonda Don’t let age dull your shine: keep the rest of your face natural and throw on a bright coloured lipstick. We personally LOVE bright reds, pinks and oranges and believe they work on any adventurous woman, no matter how old. TOP TIP: Texture is vital in nailing the perfect lip. Through the ageing process, lips become thin and dry, therefore we advise you to swap your matte lipsticks for tinted balms or moisturizing lipsticks. Our personal favourite is YSL’s Rouge Volupte Shine lipstick (£26 in all department stores), as it contains hyaluronicplumping capsules for a natural pout.

41

With age eyebrows get thinner and the hairs get lighter, so using an eyebrow pencil will make a dramatic difference and in turn will restore definition and structure to that Accent your eyes like beautiful face of yours! 1 Apply the pencil to your brows with small, light strokes, following where the brows have thinned out (this way your brows will look natural and not drawn on). 2 Finding the right colour for you: One of the most important things is to avoid using a pencil that is darker than your hair colour. If your hair is grey, we suggest avoiding red or brown pencils. 3 TOP TIP: Keeping your brows long and thick with a high arch will lift your face and eyes. This way they will look rough and ready, but natural and perfectly groomed.

Judi Dench

For a day-to-day look, try applying a pencil liner in small, circular movements where your eyelashes meet your eyelid. Make sure that the eyeliner is worked into the root and bases of the lashes, and also on your lower eyelid; this will open the eye and add depth. TOP TIP: For an evening look this summer, we suggest swapping your matte grey smokey eye for more natural, nude shades and if you’re feeling extra glamorous, throw in some subtle champagne pink and gold eye shadows!

Freshen your face like Vanessa Redgrave A light, fresh foundation such as Bobby Brown’s tinted moisturizing balm (£34, Selfridges) can make an older face look youthful, dewy and bright. For an instant face lift use rose and peach blushes. Sweep the blusher over the apples of your cheeks and we promise you’ll never look back! If you desire a warmer look, add a hint of bronzer to your cheeks. (No, bronzer isn’t just for your daughter!) TOP TIPS: 1 AVOID using a powder puff: too much powder draws attention to lines and creases. If needed, use sparingly and slowly build it up with a small powder brush. 2 Keep it fresh, clean and bright and never obvious! Tinted moisturizers will smooth the skin, boosting natural luminosity; creating a more laid-back look. |

Selfridges Bright Old Things Words by Phoebe Hallas

B

right Old Things (or BOT’s, as we like to call it) is a collaboration between Selfridges and the over 40 age group who have found new vocations and embraced change later in life. The collaboration works in juxtaposition to Selfridges annual Bright Young Thing’s campaign, placing prominence on the creativity found in the older generation to try new things and be inspired. The campaign focuses on ’40-80 somethings’ who have done just that (Selfridges, 2015). The campaign launched January of this year, and celebrates the older generations talents and enterprise, while looking into new career paths found later in life. BOT’s emphasises that being part of the mature generation definitely does not mean you must become old, boring and succumb to mortality; something that we here at Nancy HQ wholeheartedly agree with. Men and women such as designer Nick Wooster, artist Sue Kreitzam and furniture designer Den Woods are among the fourteen inspiring people the campaign focuses on. This program celebrates the mantra “It’s never too late to try something new” (Bew, S. 2014). Bright Old Things focuses on how these fourteen individuals tackle life as they grow older. They are among many of the mature generation that are representing a whole new attitude to life and wellbeing (WGSN, 2015). In addition, it is believed that nearly half of all entrepreneurs who founded new companies in 2011 were between the ages of 25 and 64 (Kaufmann Foundation, 2011), proving that it is never too later to start fresh.

50

Just as is suggested in the name, this new talent scheme (that usually celebrates talent in the youth) forms a positive overview of the older generation and their successes. Each of the fourteen individuals have been given their own window displays in the Oxford Street Selfridges store. They have all designed their spaces themselves, all of which feature limited edition products which will in turn be available in the Bright Old Things boutique and online. Selfridges stated that each individual was chosen on the basis of them undergoing a career change, under a coined phrase: the ‘Retirement Renaissance’. Likewise. they have also focused on individuals that have made a step into the unknown at such a late stage in life (Stephen, R. 2015). “One of the things we pride ourselves on is telling great stories,” said Linda Hewson, Selfridges’ creative director (cited in Bew, S. 2014). “How better to start the year than by celebrating fourteen of them? These people can teach us all a thing or two about growing old properly.” For more information visit http://www. selfridges.com/content/article/bright-old-things or follow the hashtag #brightoldthings on any social media platform. |

Mary Berry Our Favourite Famous Nancy Words by Joanne Bennett

A

s one of the world’s most famous bakers, and a true British treasure, Mary Rosa Berry is most known for presenting The Great British Bake Off. However, it’s her world famous cakes, all round commitment to healthy living, and foremost her Nancy-rated fashion sense that makes her one of the Worlds favourite ladies. Mary Berry is on of the biggest role models of today, and we sure love her too, here at Nancy HQ. 53

If Mary Berry isn’t a part of your life I’m sure she will be very soon! Whether it’s because you decide to binge watch Great British Bake off online after reading our gushing article on the lady herself, or because you decide to dedicate your weekends to baking everything from one of her many recipe books. Mary berry truly is a role model NANCY, and if you want to take a leaf out of anyone’s book, its surely is this ladys. (Particularly if that leaf has a recipe to her famous victoria sponge). From baking to becoming a Dame, this is a NANCY who has done it all and still looks incredible at the end of it. In our exclusive interview, Berry justifies our gushiness and proves just how much of an example she is of how life doesn’t end when you turn 79, but that it only just begins.

You bake cakes for a living but you look incredible at nearly 80, what are you drinking and where can we buy it? Mary laughs gratefully and explains “I feel I am very fortunate to be fit and healthy at my age. A lot of my peers aren’t and so I do feel lucky. I put it down to good genes, a healthy diet and a little bit of exercise. I don’t go to the gym, but I do play tennis.” When you consider that Mary’s own mother died at the age of 105, it makes sense that turning 80 feels rather like a second 21st birthday for the nations favourite Nancy. What’s the best health advice you could give others? You must have many a pointer up your sleeve, we’d love to know your secret! “People have too much sugar in their diet. There is no need to add extra sugar to your diet. It also about sensible portion sizes and not going back for second helpings. “

As well as being the nations favourite baker, you are somewhat of a fashion icon and we here at NANCY love your style! In last years GBBO you wore an amazing bomber jacket from Marks and Spencer’s which had storks printed all over it; it sold out in a week! It was an amazing jacket if you don’t mind us saying, but how does that make you feel, knowing that your career in food has also led you into the fashion spotlight? “People are very nice, they seem to like what I wear,” she says after last year being listed as one of the 50 best-dressed over 50s by a national newspaper. “I like to wear things that suit me for my age. I don’t want to wear anything too short or low cut. I do think people tend to dress a bit too young sometimes, and so I am careful to wear something that I love and that is appropriate You bake cakes for a living but you look incredible at nearly for my age. “Social media has changed the face of fashion as we know it” - Caroline Perry

Words by Joanne Bennett

S

ocial media has literally taken over the face of fashion and basically transformed it into something it never used to be: accessible, instant and faster than ever. Fashions’ accessibility, in terms of cost (particularly in luxury fashion), may be questionable, but it’s accessibility as an industry has become hugely prevalent, with people from all over the world and at all ages being able to access the world of fashion online. This is made even clearer by the shift within the industry, which has seen focus move from ‘private eye’ fashion to the idea that fashion is truly a luxury that everyone is entitled to. An example of this can be seen in Designer fashions shows across London, Paris, Milan, and New York fashion weeks in the last few years, where invites were exclusively for industry professionals and Hollywood’s most famous list. Now it’s very much the case that anyone with enough patience and money to attend these events is welcome. That means you, our NANCYS of this world, can attend LFW if you so desire, and make your mark on one of the industry’s most poignant events. And who wouldn’t want to!? Now is the time to make a stand for the NANCYS of the nation and show the world that the fashion industry isn’t just for the fresh faced 20 year olds, but for the fine ladies who have known fashion for much longer and have quite the idea of what makes it down right fabulous. But what’s even better is that it’s social media that allows you to do this right from the comfort of your own home. No fighting for the front row, or mingling with hollow-legged teens. By clicking on to your Instagram, Facebook, or any other social media platform, you can view comments, images and videos within moments of the show commencing.

56

You can make your opinion on Chanels new resort collection moments before the last model has even hit the runway, and if that’s not a V.I.P experience enough for you then we don’t know what is! Social media allows the world to get involved with what is happening that instant, and designers can now even live stream their shows, allowing you fancy Nancys to sit back on your sofa and watch the show from home in real time. Burberry has used the live catwalk stream feature in previous shows, and by doing so, successfully catapulted their brand and collection to a whole new demographic of viewers, ones who wouldn’t have otherwise been able to access their shows or products. As well as social media changing people’s wardrobes; high street stores and designers are using social media as a platform to promote their products, which isn’t only benefitting their pockets but our economy (not to mention that our wardrobes are looking way slicker than before). Before social media, stores would have to wait until there advertisement graced the television or newspaper, now they can upload an image to show customers what is coming soon.

being able to look at your favourite designer collections, to browsing on the websites of your favourite high street stores and adding those key pieces to your own wardrobe, social media is here to help you realise your fashion potential, and to change your wardrobe into everything you ever wanted it to be. Instagram gives you the opportunity to recreate a retailer’s outfit and incorporate it into your own person style. Just by going on to your favourite high street stores social media platform, they provide you with a look that is accessible! Stores such as Marks and Spencer’s will put statement pieces with the clothing so the outfit is already assembled for you. Now it’s up to you, Nancys of Britain! Social media is here to stay and we want you to know how to make it work for you! You can see our How To guide on pg. So no more hiding from that new App or saying no to online shopping, you deserve better than that! Go on, find a social media platform that suits you and show the industry that fashions oldest treasures are also the future too! |

In recent studies “One study from eBay Deals looked into data from five social networks during NYFW and found more people are using social media for wardrobe advice, inspiration and the latest trends. Top fashion accounts live tweeted from the shows and two brands, Badgley Mischka and Bergdorf Goodman, co-previewed their collections exclusively on Pinterest. Fashion-related tweets doubled from last year’s events and profressional photographers made use of Instagram”. (mashable.Bautista.C feb,16,2013) Can you just imagine being in a world where you are not able to see the top trends of the season? If you are a Nancy who isn’t yet on social media I’m sure by the end of this you will be. It’s not just changing the way you feel on the inside but also how you look from the outside, which is bound to be pretty darn fabulous if you are accessing the latest trends and fashion news! From

Cake of the Month Words by Melissa Hadley -

N

ancys! Want to recreate one of Mary’s recipes from the Great British Bake Off? Here’s your chance! It is time for our cake of the month, and what better than a nice cooling lemon tart ready for those spring days sitting in the garden? History of the Lemon Tart and celebrating the Lemon! The Lemon Tart is special and unique as it is said to not contain a single piece of fruit. Recipes for the tart even date all the way back to 1651, and the beginning of the ‘texture transition’ (trendyWebstar and Brian, 2012). The city of Menton, France is most famous for its lemon tradition and many British tourists in the 19th century went to Menton for its wonderful weather in the winter. Even some celebrities of the time went, such as Robert Louis Stevenson and Queen Victoria! A lot of Menton’s economy was dependent on the cultivation of lemons; they even celebrate the Lemon Festival with parades and fireworks, lasting two weeks. Menton is the only place in France where Lemons grow, so if you fancy a break in February after being inspired by your zesty tart, then perhaps we have found the perfect destination for you Nancy’s! PASTRY: 225g plain flour 150g cold butter, cut into small cubes 25g icing sugar 1 large egg, beaten 2 tbsp water LEMON FILLING: 9 large eggs 300ml double cream 350g caster sugar finely grated zest and juice of 6 large lemons INSTRUCTIONS: SERVES 8 - You will need a 28cm deep loose-bottomed tart tin. - To make the pastry, measure the flour, butter and sugar into a processor. Whiz until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs and then add the egg and water. Whiz again until it forms a ball. - Roll out the pastry thinly on a floured work surface until it is just a little bigger than the size of the tin. Line the tart tin with the pastry, letting the extra pastry hang over the sides of the tin. Place on a baking sheet and then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. - Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Line the tin with non-stick paper and fill with baking beans. Blind bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven until pale golden brown. - Take out of the oven and remove the baking beans and paper. Carefully trim the excess pastry from the sides using a sharp knife. Return the empty pastry shell to the oven for another 10-12 minutes or until it is completely dry. Set aside to cool. - Reduce the temperature of the oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. - Measure all the filling ingredients into a bowl and whisk until smooth. Carefully pour the filling mixture into the cold baked pastry case. - Transfer the tart and tray carefully to the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until just set but still with a slight wobble in the middle. The filling will sink down a bit when it has cooled. - Leave to cool a little, or completely, and then remove it from the tin. Transfer to a serving plate and dust with icing sugar to serve. PREPARING AHEAD: The tart can be made up to 2 days ahead. Freezes well. AGA: Bake the pastry blind on the grid shelf on the floor of the roasting oven for 10 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and cook for a further 10 minutes. Fill the tart, then slide back on to the floor with the cold shelf on the second set of runners for 15 minutes or until just set with a slight wobble. Transfer to the simmering oven for 20 minutes until completely set.’ (Anon, 2015) |

C O N T R I B U T O R S 73

Hello to all my wonderful Nancy’s! I am Melissa Hadley - one small slice of the amazing ‘Nancy Magazine’ team. I believe being a ‘Nancy’ does not subject you to being a particular stereotype, it allows the 65+ to flourish and to be free enough to be who they want to be. It is true ‘age ain’t nothin’ but a number’! There is no time like the present, and what I adore about Nancy Magazine is that it allows the 65+ to celebrate their age and their life. To me the older generation are so important; they are wise characters, a figure to look up to and the most interesting people you will ever meet. If anything, we should be looking to these fashionistas of women, they’ve lived through history and seen all the trends – what inspirational people!

Hello to all you lovely ladies, I’m Megan Hirst (one seventh of the fabulous Nancy girls) and when I think of the term Nancy and what it means to me, it epitomises everything I hope to be when I reach 65; old, proud and down-right fabulous. The term ‘Nancy’ encompasses the ideals that age is but an illusion that fashion has no concept of. Fashion is limitless, it tells an individual’s story, whether that be fantasy or non- fictional. Therefore Nancy to me is that story; whether a 65 year old wants to dress in head-to-toe punk one day and vintage Chanel the next, it is entirely up to her. Nancy magazine is fresh and unique in the sense that it’s not trying to make old women feel young, instead its making light of the fact that they are old, wise and still got sass! Nancy isn’t trying to sell you antiwrinkle creams and ‘ways to look 10 years younger’, we’re sharing inspiration and advice on how to be the best possible version of the woman you are now. It’s true that our favourite age is now, we simply want you ladies to be whoever you want today and dress accordingly, and if you change your mind tomorrow and want to dress as a new version of yourself then go ahead! You are a Nancy!

I’m Abbi Minchin, and I love you Nancys! Fashion aside, the older generation are important in our lives. First of all, without them we would not be here. If for any reason, that is why we should respect and embrace the men and women that came before us. More importantly, style does not have a sell by date. We here at Nancy HQ admire the women that made the previous century so dynamic and fashion forward. And trust me, style does not diminish! Nancy magazine is one of a kind, and something that should have been created many years ago. Nonetheless, now that it is here, we want to make it as fabulous as can be! By focusing on incredible women who embrace life and happiness, we are hoping to persuade everyone, young and old, to do the same. I am honoured to be a part of a magazine that promotes such a positive outlook on life!

First of all, I’m Layla Ditchfield and welcome to the wonderful world of Nancy! Nancy magazine is all about proving that age is irrelevant in the fashion industry and if anything, an individual’s style only advances with age and their journey through life. When I think of the term “Nancy”, I do not think of a number, ethnicity or particular style. I envisage somebody who has grown old with knowledge and now oozes confidence, happiness and grace. A Nancy is somebody who isn’t afraid to step away from stereotypes and be different. She is somebody who inspires us all on a daily basis through telling her story and expressing herself through her unique style. Over at Nancy HQ, we want every single one of you to feel just confident as you did when you were in your younger years, because after all, we believe that as the years go by, you only become more fabulous and it’s time to embrace it!

Hello I’’m Phoebe Hallas and I believe Nancy is an important source of empowerment to the older woman, Nancy’s focus on our favourite age is now allows women to embrace themselves and not let their age affect what they want to do in life, this is an important quality as its so easy to get caught up in the old age stereotypes. Nancy allows the older woman to see that she is amazing and beautiful and can do whatever she want to do no matter what her age is. Life experience is an important part of what makes a person who they are and I think that its often forgotten that the older generation are probably a lot more interesting and fun because of it, Nancy magazine ensures that these qualities are not forgotten and women of all ages can feel self confident and empowered.

I’m the second Megan (Bradley) of the Nancy team, and if you’ve had a read of my ‘Rise Of The Older Model’ article, you’ll know that I am a huge advocate for the older generation making a comeback to the wonderful world of fashion. I LOVE Nancy and everything it stands for. I often reflect on my personal style, and how my taste in fashion has changed as I’ve grown up, often resulting in me thinking about those who’ve inspired my own style and views on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. These people are ‘Nancys’; women who haven’t let the idea of ‘aging’ stop them from being who they truly are, and have used this life to make the world a more beautiful place by loving who they are, regardless of what anyone else thinks. They are the women I aspire to be, and whom I always think of when asked ‘Who inspires you most?’. These Nancys aren’t an exclusive club of woman, but instead the opposite, they are everysingle- one of you, standing against this time of ageism and laughing in its face. It’s important and it’s necessary, and we here at Nancy HQ want to give you a voice! “I never wanted to dress young, I wanted to dress great!” –Joyce Carpati, 80 Year Old New Yorker, who previously worked for Cosmopolitan. That’s one of my new favourite quotes.

Hello to all Nancys, my name is Joanne Bennett. Nancy Magazine is the must read of the year! It covers the social media take over in the fashion industry, today’s key styles, role models of the century and much more. If you were looking for a magazine that makes you feel as fabulous as you are, then you’ve definitely picked up the right one. This has been an exciting journey for us here at Nancy HQ, where we have discovered a fresh new read that embraces the Nancys of the world. My contribution to the magazine, exploring how social media has taken over the face of fashion, has allowed us here at Nancy to recognise the importance of giving the older generations an easy access guide of using social media, after all it is the future and we believe that just because you own a bus pass doesn’t mean you’re not the future too. Using social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as a platform is your way to success!

Our Style Icons

Megan Hirst: My personal Nancy would have to be Iris Apfel; she is without a doubt the most courageous Nancy there is when it comes to fashion. She might be 93 but her extraordinary taste in accessories and expressive attitude inspires me to not simply be restricted to what fashion I see in front of me but to explore all aspects of inspiration and simply wear my feelings. This woman is legendary, everything she wears is entirely different and says something new, and that’s what I love. She doesn’t have a set style, she wears whatever she likes, whether it be from a flea market, junk shop or designer shop. Iris is in no way minimalist and defies any expectation of what a typical 93 year old should look like; she is fierce and has an outlook on fashion I hope to someday attain. Abbi: For me, there is one Hollywood actress that takes centre stage among her peers, and that is Jane Fonda. She took this awards season by storm, gracing the red carpets looking as beautiful and glamorous as she did in the 1960’s – even more so, in my opinion. But what I like most about Fonda is her shock factor. She has embraced aging and has had fun with it, especially in her style. The actress, who turns 78 this year, is everything I believe any woman should aspire to be: confident, graceful, successful and fabulous. She writes in her book ‘Women Coming of Age’: “I’ve found that the process of aging is, to a large degree, negotiable.” Listen to Jane. You do not need to conform to society’s ideology of the older woman. She hasn’t; which is why she is my number one Nancy! Joanne: My 65+ Fashion icon has to be Helen Mirren! If there has to be one example of a Hollywood actress that doesn’t need any plastic surgery, it would be Helen Mirren. It is not very often you find an actress who is confident enough to embrace their wrinkles, but when you’re ageing this gracefully, who cares? Age is definitely just a number with Mirren, from embracing her wrinkles to her fabulous style - which never seems to be missed on the red carpet! Melissa: My Fashion Icon has to be Vivienne Westwood, she is 73 and still as unique, whacky and fabulous as ever. She has an original artistic flair in which can’t be imitated by any ordinary person. I love how bold and bright she is; her colourful eyeliner, her fiery orange hair – she certainly is not afraid. With that being said, I further think that cutting her hair and having it white in 2014 shows how she is also a very brave character. Her reasoning – to show she is “proud of her age” (Willis and Strang, 2014). I think I love her style so much because I too prefer to wear brighter clothes, especially in my jackets, and I love to wear patterns. I can only hope I can carry this on into my 60’s and 70’s in the way Vivienne does. She oozes confidence in everything she does- she is truly a Nancy. Layla: My upmost favourite Nancy has to be the fashion industry’s most enduring, timeless beauty: Carmen dell’Orefice. At the age of 83, she is still landing magazine covers and slots on the runway at New York Fashion Week! I adore Carmen not because of her obvious beauty, but because of her laid-back attitude to life. She is the perfect example of a Nancy as she refuses to give into anyone else’s idea on how she ought to look and feel at her age. “Retirement is not a word that I can even visualize. I retire when I go to bed!” She believes that age is purely a number and lives by the idea that you have to “know yourself, be true to yourself and make a contribution” and that at every age; everybody is a “work of art in progress”. Phoebe: My over 55 style icon would have to be 95 year old Iris Apfel, she accessorises amazingly and always looks chic and sophisticated. She knows how to pull both youthful and more mature looks together and in doing this she is a style icon for all ages. Not only is she a style icon but also a role model for all, not allowing her age to stop her from doing what she loves or being who she is. Megan Bradley: Moyra Wright. No, not a celebrity, but instead, the most stylish person to ever be given a buss pass. I’m bias of course; Moyra is my Nana. A best friend, mentor, and fashion guide since I started spending my pocket-money on nail polish instead of chewing gum, teaching me that champagne at midday is more than okay, it’s a way of life, and that it’s completely acceptable to drunk-Skype one-another, then forget what we spoke about in the morning. Nana sparked my love for fashion; clothes shopping togehter, every chance we got. Nothing has changed since, she lives just close enough to Carlisle that we make at least two trips per stay to indulge in expensive but life-affirming shopping trips. It’s hard to believe even for a second that age has touched her; she is the biggest party animal I know, and the only person who is more addicted to Topshopmore than myself. My Nana is a Nancy through and through. “If I like what I’m wearing, and I think I look great in it, and it makes me feel amazing, then why do I care what anyone else thinks?” A quote from the woman herself.
