Mudslide maims main water supply ROCHELLE BAKER RBaker@abbotsfordtimes.com

bbotsford and Mission’s main water supply has been knocked out after a mudslide occurred along a logging road on Wednesday. The slide happened along Forest Service Road around 5 p.m. and ruptured the adjacent pipeline for the Norrish Creek water system that

Abbotsford/Mission shared water system at Norrish Creek crippled typically provides 80 per cent of the water to the two communities. The slide has fully blocked the road for about 300 metres and it’s estimated that it may take upwards of four weeks before the Norrish Creek system is fully operational.

Jim Gordon, Abbotsford’s general manager of engineering, said water service to residents should be unaffected as water from Cannell Lake, the city’s wells system can meet demand at this time of year; the rainy season, when water use is

lowest. Average daily demand this week is around 65 million litres per day (MLD) and the city can draw between 90 to 100 MLD per day from the other sources without the Norrish Creek system, said Gordon. The maximum daily capacity for the Abbotsford Mission water system is approximately 150 MLD, said

Gordon. But that maximum can drop somewhat as water reservoirs drop if they are tapped on a constant basis, said Gordon. “More practically, it is closer to 140 MLD for over a couple days and around 122 MLD if drawn over a period of weeks.” see WATER, page A7

More than 20 police officers rolled into Abbotsford Senior Secondary to end their Cops 4 Cancer ride Friday afternoon. Panther enthusiasm was high as students greeted the cyclists and motorcycle cops, who circled the rotunda before heading down the hall into the Panther Pit. Inset, junior team member Josh, a Grade 10 student at St. John Brebeuf, was on hand for the final festivities. See Thursday’s Abbotsford-Mission Times for a full recap of the event. n Aldergrove man convicted for the murders of two Fraser Valley sex trade workers has won his appeal and will get a new trial. Davey Mato Butorac was sentenced in February 2011 to life in prison with no chance of parole for 23 years for the deaths of Gwendolyn Jo Lawton, of Abbotsford, and Sheryl Koroll of Langley. City workers found the body of Lawton, 46, down an embankment of a gravel road in northwest Abbotsford on March 13, 2007. She’d been badly beaten about the head, had broken ribs and had been strangled to death. Koroll, 50, was found dead July 7, 2007 in an industrial park off Mufford Crescent in Langley. She died of blunt force blows to her head that caused skull fractures and severe brain injuries. There was also trauma to her neck, suggesting she’d been strangled, although she had not died in the process. see TRIAL, page A7
