A warm smile and a concerned friendly face are the hallmarks of our dedicated team of devoted and sympathetic volunteers when visiting the hospitalised, house-bound and elderly.
A.B.C. volunteers accompany seniors and infirm patients incapable of going alone to medical consultations.
A.B.C. offers a telephone monitoring and home visits service to the aged and lonely, to monitor their welfare and check on their safety.

Unexpected Scenario
Every Friday A.B.C. junior volunteers deliver freshly home-baked appetising challos to the elderly and infirm at their home or in the Jewish Old-age Home. (Coordinator: Mrs. M. Mehler)
Every evening, as supper time comes to an end, a group of ten girls (16+) hold a short krias shema recital accompanied by music and song, with the lonely and elderly, - most of whom reside in the nursery home. An added gain is the youth involvement in caring for the elderly and infirm, imbuing them with sensitivity and respect to the senior generation.
Ever found yourself unprepared in the Accident and Emergency Unit? Famished? Exhausted? Children home alone? Call A.B.C. for an emergency food supply; for assistance in arranging a substitute to take over a bedside vigil allowing you some respite; emergency child placement; and child minders at home or in hospital.

Medical Referral Service Confidentiality - Our Key Policy
The A.B.C. Medical Advisory Board consists of discreet professionals who are either well versed in the medical field or acquainted to with superior sought after consultants. At the request of the patient, or patient’s family, the medical advisory board will, after due research, refer the patient or medical file to leading reputable specialists, in the appropriate field of expertise, in coordination with the patients house doctor.

In addition to referrals, the board will, when necessary, assist in securing medical appointments in a short time frame, and will help arrange for a second opinion. The Medical Advisory Board continuously focuses its efforts on building close relationships with prominent physicians and prestigious medical centers, in-order to stay current with the latest procedures and medical advances.
Hospital Transportation Service A.B.C. assists mainly with patient transportation to hospitals within the Province of Antwerp. (Brasschaat, Edegem, Mortsel, Wilrijk, Zandhoven, etc.)

Nourishing Meals The A.B.C. Meals Service primarily focuses on the provision of: special dietary requirements, house-bound post-operative patients, last minute meal requests and for additional family members or patient’s companion.
When patients are in hospital, the gown they wear is exceptionally important. Patients need to feel confident and comfortable in what can be difficult situations. Many women are disturbed to have to wear the standard immodest hospital gown. Our modest gowns, 50% cotton and 50% Dacron, are comfortable, don’t crease, and
are easy to maintain. They are suitable for all patients; in all situations, i.e. pre or post-surgery, or when one is hooked to an I.V. and cannot wear ones own clothes. These tasteful gowns lift the patient’s morale as they feel presentable and looking the best they can - even the doctors and nurses comment on the difference!

Bikur Cholim Rooms and Kosher Pantries The Bikur Cholim Rooms at Eeuwfeest Kliniek, Middelheim, and St. Vincentius Hospitals are maintained and replenished by A.B.C. twice-weekly. In these homely rooms one can find a kosher kitchenette, a variety of food and drinks, and recreational material for the patient and family. We are in the process of negotiations with other hospitals that service the local Jewish community for further Bikur Cholim rooms and kosher pantries.

hen patients are hospitalised their greatest comfort is the presence of a family member at their bedside. A.B.C. are confronted at least once a week with the problem of families seeking accommodation solutions in the immediate vicinity of UZ LeuvenGasthuisberg. This is often a challenge and cause of inconvenience, especially on Shabbos and Yom Tov. In a bold step to improve services to the community and for the comfort of the family in their time of crisis; as from mid March ‘11 iy�h, A.B.C. will provide comfortable sleeping accommodations within 3 minutes walking distance of the main entrance of UZ Leuven Gasthuisberg. The A.B.C. Hospitality House in Leuven will be maintained scrupulously with freshly made beds and amenities that include fresh food, robes, books and even toothbrushes, to create an atmosphere of warmth and care. All these thoughtful touches help to make a stressful situation bearable allowing the family to focus their full attention on the patient. We are grateful to the Directors of the University Hospital of Leuven, without whom this pioneering project would not have been realised.

Due to current hospital practice of leaving a newborn baby with the mother throughout the day and night, A.B.C. will endeavour to provide upon request a caring and experienced volunteer to settle the baby, allowing the exhausted mother to rejuvenate with a few hours of much needed respite whilst still in hospital. After multiple births and other exceptional situations, this service is also continued when the mother and baby/ies return home from ‘Bais Reizel’ Babykraam. A.B.C. coordinates twice daily helping sessions to look after the baby/ies whilst the mother recuperates.
When a child is in hospital, volunteers are available, day or night, to provide respite to parents who can not stay at the hospital around the clock, but would prefer their child not to be unattended. This includes staying with a child overnight, or simply visiting for an hour or two while a parent davens, gets something to eat, catches up on some sleep or attends to the needs of other children.
We do our utmost to arrange rooming-in facilities or accommodation in the vicinity of any hospital for family members who wish to spend a night or a shabbos close to their loved one.

Carefully selected recreational material; personally put together according to age, capability and interests; are available for your child’s bedside entertainment. These kits include: arts and crafts, appealing toys and games; and Jewish activity books, providing hours of entertainment.
Our media library has an inventory of MP3’s, DVD players and a collection of several hundred DVD’s, which are loaned to bedridden patients or those with restricted mobility. Guests Amenities and Adjustments A.B.C. assist in the acclimatisation of patients and accompanying family from abroad who have come to Belgium for medical issues. This often includes welcoming them at the airport, providing suitable lodgings, translation service, Belgian GSM’s, and many other practical amenities to ease their stay.

Medische Verwijsdienst Vertrouwelijkheid - Ons Hoofdbeleid De A.B.C. Medisch Adviserende Raad bestaat uit discrete vakmensen die ofwel goed vertrouwd zijn met de medische wereld ofwel bepaalde gekwalificeerde raadgevers goed kennen. Op verzoek van de patiënt of diens familie kan de Medische raad, na degelijk onderzoek te hebben verricht, de patiënt verwijzen naar eveneens gekwalificeerde specialisten (in overleg met zijn huisarts). Naast verwijzingen kan de raad indien nodig helpen bij het maken van een afspraak in een zo kort mogelijk tijdsbestek of het inschakelen van een tweede mening. De Medisch Adviserende Raad streeft ernaar constant goede relaties op te bouwen met

prominente artsen en prestigieuze medische centra, om op de hoogte te blijven van de laatste ontwikkelingen in de medische wereld.

Bikur Cholim Kamers en Kosjere Provisiekasten
De Bikur Cholim-Kamers in de Eeuwfeest Kliniek, het Middelheim en het St. VincentiusA.B.C. biedt hulp voor patiëntenvervoer naar ziekenhuis worden twee keer per week door ziekenhuizen, vooral in de provincie Antwerpen A.B.C. onderhouden en bijgevuld. Ziekenhuis ‘ Nanny Dienst’ Kinderoppasdienst Aangezien het huidige ziekenhuisbeleid op de materniteitafdeling erop gericht is om moeder en kind 24 uur op 24 bij elkaar te laten, wil A.B.C. op aanvraag, ervaren vrijwilligers aanbieden die enkele uren per dag de verzorging van de baby op zich nemen. Dit geeft de moeder reeds in het ziekenhuis de gelegenheid om uit te rusten. Deze dienst kan eventueel ook uitgebreid worden tot thuishulp, nadat moeder en kind(eren) van de Beis Reizel Babykraam terugkeren, bijvoorbeeld in geval van een meerlingengeboorte of andere uitzonderlijke situaties. A.B.C. biedt in zulke gevallen hulpsessies aan die twee keer per dag kunnen plaatsvinden.
Vrijwilligers staan dag en nacht klaar om ouders van gehospitaliseerde kinderen af te lossen. Zodoende krijgen ouders de gelegenheid om een rustmoment in te lassen, zonder echter hun kind voor een ogenblik alleen te moeten laten. De vrijwilligers kunnen in dergelijke gevallen bij het kind overnachten of gewoon voor enkele uren op bezoek komen terwijl de ouder davent, iets eet, slaap inhaalt, ... (Coördinators: Mevr. B. Creatieve Bezigheden voor Kinderen
Op maat gemaakt ontspanningsmateriaal is beschikbaar voor bedlegerige kinderen: deze pakketten worden persoonlijk samengesteld o.b.v. de leeftijd, de capaciteiten en de interesses van het kind. Ze bevatten onder andere knutselmateriaal, speelgoed, gezelschapsspellen en joodse activiteitsboeken; goed voor uren speelplezier.
Audiovisuele Bibliotheek Onze mediabibliotheek bevat MP3’s, DVD-spelers en enkele honderden DVD’s die uitgeleend kunnen worden in geval van bedlegerigheid of beperkte mobiliteit. De collectie omvat shiurim, muziek en

Mediotheek
Apparatuur en hulpmiddelen m.b.t. mobiliteit of invaliditeit en andere benodigdheden voor de ziekenkamer kunnen kostenloos uitgeleend worden in de A.B.C.-mediotheek. A.B.C. kan ook hulp verschaffen bij het wereldwijd zoeken naar conditiespecifieke benodigdheden. A.B.C. helpt bij de aanpassing van buitenlandse patiënten (en hun familieleden) die zich in België laten behandelen. Dit omvat verwelkoming aan de luchthaven, het vinden van geschikte logies, vertalingsdiensten, het zorgen voor Belgische GSM’s en vele andere praktische voorzieningen om hun verblijf te vergemakkelijken.

Enkele recente studies hebben beduidende gezondheidsvoordelen van het drinken van granaatappelsap aangetoond. A.B.C. verzorgt voorraden van vers granaatappelsap voor patiënten met immuniteitsproblemen of anderen die baat kunnen hebben bij dit natuurlijk supplement .

They sacrifice their time and energy to help someone else usually for little or no payment. Volunteering is an excellent way to increase your self esteem and self worth. It makes you feel needed and gives you a purpose in life. Helping others is a great way to contribute to society. People who volunteer are usually happier people who are also happier with themselves. How good do you feel after you’ve just helped someone do something? How good do you feel when you’ve put a smile on someone’s face or brightened up someone’s day?
