welcome Welcome to the autumn issue of Network News.

As usual this edition brings lots of information on funding opportunities, funding deadlines, learning and development opportunities and much more. ABC have been busy during the past two months assisting members to access a range of funding opportunities through the provision of free funding clinics offering advice and funding application support on a one to one basis. Help, support and advice was offered to local groups across the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon areas and this included; access to Grant Tracker, help to complete application forms and assistance with the review and development of key financial controls , policies and procedures to assure compliance with the law. ABC are pleased to announce that we have been awarded funding from the PHA – Small Grants Fund in support of the January 2013 – Mar 2013 training calendar. The funding will facilitate additional in demand accredited courses in Emergency First Aid, Food Safety, Moving & Handling and IT for Older People during the last quarter of the year. Now is the time to take as much action as possible to prepare yourself for the winter energy bills. There are tips and advice in our short feature on energy efficiency which can help you control what energy you use and save money. ABC would like to thank all the young people, schools, local youth organisations and agencies who participated in the hugely successful Craigavon Youth Showcase Event which was held at Brownlow Community Hub on the 1st October 2012. Particular thanks to all the staff at Brownlow Hub, Cool FM , Driving Change and our funders SHSCT - Promoting Wellbeing and SELB. A similar event is currently being planned for the Banbridge district and it is envisaged that this will be held during February 2013 – more details to follow shortly! ABC has recently reviewed its 3 year Strategic Plan and a greater emphasis has been placed on sustainability from both an organisational and membership perspective. In this context ABC

ABC Community Network launches a new Design, Print & Web Service

Exhibitions, Information Events, Fundraising Events.

For many years ABC has offered various office services including photocopying, faxing, printing, financial services and room hire, plus hot desk facilities to the voluntary and community sector.

Local networking events provide a great opportunity to raise the profile of your group. However if you want to stand out from the crowd, you need to have at least a roll up banner beside your promotional stand.

Taking this one step further we are now launching our print and design service to serve the needs of the voluntary and community sector, as well as small businesses and the general public.

ABC Design can design a full range of promotional banners whether it be the simple roll up vinyl banner, large pop up displays with counters, or PVC banners. We can also design signage for your “shopfront” or outside space.

We are offering a quality professional design service at competitive rates. Our clients already include a range of both voluntary and community groups as well as local businesses. Being close to the community and voluntary sector we know how important it is to get your message out to your members and the people you serve. We also know how increasingly difficult it is to make your event stand out from the ever crowded information spaces both online and on community information boards e.g. local shops, sports clubs and health centres. A well designed poster, flyer, postcard or news sheet will ensure you get your message across and raise your profile. It is also important in presenting a professional appearance to the public.

What can we offer you? Designing and printing flyers and posters is just one of the services of which your group can avail. We can design a professional logo for your group. In addition we can design professional headed paper and compliment slips, just the thing every group needs to maintain their professional approach both to funders and to promote local fund raising efforts. •

Does your group actively run functions to raise money? We can design great looking invitations and tickets.

Do you send out thank-you cards to your donors each year to show your appreciation? We can design a professional card with matching envelopes with your logo and details conveying your thanks.

Maybe you would like to maintain contact with the people important to your group or organisation? We can design folded cards, postcards and any type of stationery to project your professional image to your user groups.

Go online with your own website! Design and printing isn’t the only thing we do here at ABC. With most people now having access to the web, their first contact with many groups and organisations will be online. Your web site is an important extension of how you appear to them. If your web site is fresh and up to date, it will convey to interested people, and funders that your group is current and in touch with the people it seeks to support. We will design your web site to suit your needs. Whether it is a small web site with your mission statement and contact details, or a large site complete with full multimedia, blog, galleries all updated frequently, ABC are here to help. Start small and grow your web site as your group grows. Add pages and photo galleries when you need. Hook up your web site with social network sites such as Facebook, Flickr, Youtube or Twitter. Do you have a Facebook page? Are you using your timeline and cover photo efficiently to promote your group? Are you connecting with the right people? We can help you understand the ways in which you can use Facebook to work for the benefit of your group while still maintaining your own web site and keeping control of your information and your message.

Interested? Come and talk to us about your ideas, no matter how big or small. No need to put off getting that web site, logo, or stationery designed. We will help you make the most of your budget to give you the quality and service you deserve. Contact Marian on 02838392777 or email info@abccommunitynetwork.com for a friendly chat about your ideas. No obligation!

All Aboard the Big Red Bus with Drumcree Community Trust and Action Cancer! Each year Drumcree Community Centre hosts 4 Healthy Living Events providing information about many ways to stay healthy. The most recent event on 28th & 29th September brought people from the local community together as part of the “Biggest Coffee Morning” for Macmillan Support, raising funds for this much needed service. During the event there were a number of organisations providing support and information. Macmillan set up an information stand, Cancer Focus held ‘Quick Fit’ health Checks, Bryson Energy gave out information about their services and outside the centre the ‘Big Red Cancer Bus’ was fully booked with breast screening and health check appointments. Stress reduction was addressed with complementary therapies such as Massage, Reflexology and Aromatherapy and a Capacitar Workshop teaching stress reduction techniques. Looking good and feeling good go together, so a beautician was on hand to work miracles in some cases! The event was funded through Neighbourhood Renewal. Jennifer McCann and Linda O’Neill, the part-time Health Workers in the centre, said they were very pleased with the turnout as 124 people attended during the 2 days. Feedback from attendees was encouraging with requests for more of these events. Winter Energy Efficiency Tips Now is the time to take as much action as possible to prepare yourself for the winter energy bills. Although energy bills have rocketed recently, you could actually save money by using energy more efficiently throughout your home. In the winter months you will use more energy, but there are usually still opportunities to reduce unnecessary energy use. The tips and advice here will help you control what energy you use and can save you money. Heating Tips • Set your heating to go off 30 minutes before you leave the house, and come on again 30 minutes before you expect to return. • Turn the room thermostat down by 1 degree. This can save you around £30 a year. • If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time. • Make sure your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. • Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms.

Cooking • Use a pan which is the same size as the cooker ring to prevent heat loss. • Keep the lids on your pots, and turn down the heat when the water starts to boil. The lids not only keep the heat in the pot, but also reduce condensation in your kitchen. • Your oven is expensive to use - try to use it as sparingly and efficiently as possible. Where possible use it for more than just one item. • Don’t open your oven door to check food - every time you do so, you lose 20% of the accumulated heat. • Consider using pressure cookers, steamers and microwaves which use less energy. • Steamer pots allow you to cook two or three foods at once in the same pan

Hot Water • When using a kettle, only boil as much water as you need. (make sure you cover the element of your electric kettle) • Use the shower if you have one, rather than the bath. If you have a standard shower it will use around 40% of the water required for a bath. • A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they’re fully turned off!

Electrical Appliances • Use energy efficient light bulbs which use less energy and last up to ten times longer than standard bulbs. • Use “task” lighting rather than lighting the whole room if you only need a small amount of light • Turn off the lights when you leave a room • Turn off household appliances when not in use, as they continue to use energy when they are left on standby. • Never leave mobile phones on charge overnight.

Refrigeration • Don’t leave the fridge door open and try to avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the fridge as this increases the energy required to keep the contents cold. • Defrost your fridge frequently and check the door seals.

Washing Machines, Tumble Dryers & Dishwashers • Use a low temperature setting and only wash full loads or use a half-load or economy programme. • When drying your clothes indoors, use a clothes rail instead of a radiator as this stops the heat from reaching the rest of the room. • Modern dishwashers use less energy and water than washing up by hand. • If possible, fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher: one full load uses less energy than two half loads. The Youth Showcase Event recently held in Brownlow Community Hub attracted children, young people, teachers and youth leaders from all over the Craigavon Borough Council area. In the photo below Dale Robinson of the REACH Project demonstrates the smoothie bicycle to John McGuinness of ABC Community Network, Catherine McCormack of SHSCT Promoting Wellbeing Team, Alex McMeekin of Closing the Gap, and Jim Cunningham of the Southern Regional College. The smoothies are made by pedalling the bicycle and a small dynamo attached to the back wheel powers the blender. An eco-friendly way to make your healthy drink! Thanks to Tesco Portadown for supplying the fresh fruit and juices for the smoothies and to ASDA for supplying the healthy snacks and juice throughout the day. The Cool Fm Media Bus was parked up at the Brownlow Communty Hub drop-off zone as part of the Craigavon Youth Showcase Event which took place on 1st October. 56 young people from Lismore Comprehensive, the Muslim Association of Craigavon, Craigavon Intercultural Programme (CIP) and Scotch Street Youth Club participated in workshops on board the Cool FM “media bus”. The Cool FM bus is divided into a number of interactive stations each designed to engage up to 14 young people at a time and provoke thought and debate around the respective groups’ chosen topics. During the day and into the evening, Cool FM offered 4 separate workshops, with topics covering racism, respect, cross community relations and stereotypes with the aim of producing an advert to publicise each topic.

“The Cool FM bus presented a Initially, the young people engaged in discussion with the unique and neutral environment for Cool FM’s Media Bus Project young people to come together and Manager Jackie Ellis and Cool exchange views but also to have fun”. FM’s DJ Mairead Campbell as they outlined the possible consequences of not taking responsibility for their actions both for the young people and the community. Folllowing the discussions, Jackie and Mairead guided the groups as they planned, co-ordinated and created a multimedia promotional tool, including scripting their own radio advertisement before going own to record their advert. Once completed the ads were “Bluetoothed” to the young people who will be able to share them with their friends or upload to Facebook and Twitter. Gordon Woolsey said “The Cool FM bus presented a unique and neutral environment for young people to come together and exchange views but also to have fun”. ABC Community Network would like to thank Cool FM and all the young people who took part in the initiative . Particular thanks to Gordon Woolsey for coordinating the travel arrangements from Scotch Street and Craigavon Intercultural Programme and to the SELB for financial support for this element of the Youth Showcase Event.

The Craigavon Youth Showcase Event provided an opportunity for the Driving Change Team to give a demonstration in Road Traffic Collision (RTC) extrication techniques and procedures. Driving Change is a cross-border road safety project funded by the EU, aimed at reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions. Vehicle extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around a person who has been involved in a road traffic collision (RTC) when conventional means of exit are impossible or inadvisable. A delicate approach is needed to minimise injury to the victim during extrication and the demonstration by Driving Change highlighted the consequences of road traffic collisions and included utilisation of different equipment and stabilisation techniques. A typical car was dropped off at the Brownlow Hub car park and the Driving Change Team set up a safety exclusion zone around the vehicle. Ian McQuitty from the Driving Change Project introduced a team of 4 firefighters: Martin Yore from Louth County

ABC Community Network received funding, from the SHSCT Promoting Wellbeing Team and SELB to facilitate the provision of a showcase event for young people in the Craigavon Council area. ABC Community Network in partnership with the SHSCT Promoting Wellbeing Team, Closing the Gap Project, and a number of community and voluntary sector organisations, providing youth services in the Craigavon area, were involved in the development of the successful showcase event for young people in the Craigavon area. ABC received funding, from the SHSCT Promoting Wellbeing Team and SELB in support of the event which was held in Brownlow Community Hub on Monday 1 October 2012 from 2.00pm to 9.00pm The aim of the event was to; • Facilitate active participation of young people • Raise the profile of local groups • Increase young peoples awareness about health and wellbeing through creative activity • Give young people a voice • Increase young people’s awareness regarding community relations and inclusion. The target age group was 14+ and the 2.00 pm starting time facilitated local school visits. Participating groups were able to promote their respective programmes and highlight activities that they were currently involved in or had recently undertaken. A wide range of support agencies, statutory and non statutory, involved in youth provision were also in attendance and actively promoted opportunities for young people e.g. SHSCT, PSNI, SRC , Careers Service, Craigavon Council C-AIM and Community Sports Development. Highlights included the smoothie bike – Dale Robinson and Debbie Whitten from REACH were kept busy all day making various types of smoothies, the Cool FM “media” bus, Driving Change (Cross Border Road Safety Project). The young dancers Fiona’s Dance Academy provided the climax to a very successful day.

Council Fire Service and Rory Dumigan from NI Fire and Rescue Service, both of whom are currently on a two-year secondment to the Driving Change Project, plus two volunteer firefighters from Portadown Fire Station. Ian then invited a volunteer to come forward to participate in the demonstration as the injured driver and Jason Williamson, a Youth Alcohol Programme Development Worker, willingly volunteered. Jason works with Drumgor Detached Youth Work Project (DDYWP) or “diddy whip” as they are locally known to youngsters in the Craigavon area. Jason, kitted out in a protective suit, goggles and safety helmet, climbed into the car and within seconds the firefighters ensured that the accident scene was protected to avoid the risk of another collision or fire. The vehicle was secured using rubber wheel wedges and under-carriage support blocks to prevent any unexpected movement of the vehicle or its suspension which could cause an unstable trauma wound to the occupant or injury to the rescuers. After securing the vehicle, an initial medical assessment of the patient was carried out. Ian provided a running commentary as the firefighters deployed a range of equipment and techniques taking out the car windows, and removing the doors and roof of the car to allow the safe removal of the accident victim. Some of the younger observers from the Brownlow Community Hub Playscheme were thrilled at the sight of the cutting equipment which resembled a robotic arm from the Transformers movie!

After a delicate and thorough operation, a long spine board was used to extract the casualty from the car and the assembled group of over 200 applauded as a relieved Jason got up from the stretcher and shook hands with his rescuers. Jason Williamson said, “The demonstration highlighted the potential consequences of car accidents. Extrication is not simply popping a door off - the skill and expertise of the fire fighters ensured that I was safely removed from the car within 20 minutes”. ABC Community Network would like to thank the Driving Change Team and all the young people who attended from Brownlow Community Hub’s Playscheme and Afterschool Club, a number of schools including Lismore, Brownlow and St Michael’s Lurgan, a variety of youth organisations, and WADE Training who supported this fascinating and hugely informative element of the Craigavon Youth Showcase Event. Mullavilly says thankyou to ABC! As some of you may be aware, Kathy Gallagher left ABC Community Network after nearly 5 years. To say that we miss her very much would be an understatement – not only for the experience, skills and knowledge that she brought to her role, but also for just being Kathy! Over the last couple of years, Kathy helped ABC members to access funding amounting to nearly £200,000. We thought you might like to see just one of the letters that we received which clearly shows the value of Kathy’s work to our member groups. We’re delighted to report that Mullavilly Community Hall was recently awarded almost £10,000 from the Big Lottery after working with Kathy to complete a successful application.
