LITTLE GEMS L SCHOOL OF DANCE

OPENS OWN STUDIO CRAMLINGTON DANCE SCHOOL GETS A HOME OF ITS OWN AFTER 15 YEARS

BRIGHT & SPACIOUS: The purpose designed studio

6

ittle Gems School of Dance, established 15 years ago in Cramlington, has finally opened its very own studio in the town.

With 200 dancers attending 21 classes each week, Little Gems School of Dance had outgrown its previous hired venues. To accommodate the ever growing school, Gemma Crane, the school principal, decided now was the right time to become the first dance school established in the town, to open its very own purpose designed studio in Enterprise Court, Cramlington, offering two studio areas to its dancers which will allow for the current class timetable to be expanded and more opportunities to be offered to new and existing dancers. Little Gems School of Dance, now in its 15th year, was started by Gemma in 2003 with ten children attending one class each Tuesday. Now offering classes to dancers from the age of 18 months to adult, the school teaches a range of dance styles including ballet, tap, modern, disco, cheerleading, acro, street and contemporary as well as drama and musical theatre. Since the opening of the new studio the school has also welcomed “Zumba with Alysia” and hopes very soon to add yoga, pilates, dance for children with additional needs and singing to the class timetable. Dancers can choose to take part in an annual show, local dance displays, competitions and exams offered by locally and nationally recognised dance organisations, or can simply take classes for fun. Passionate that dance should be fun for people of all ages and abilities, Founder and School Principal, Gemma Crane, said: “I am very proud of my team at Little Gems School of Dance and we are thrilled to finally have a home of our

own. Everyone in the school has worked very hard to ensure that Little Gems School of Dance @ The Studio is the best studio space that we can offer our dancers and allows us to continue to offer a wide range of high quality classes to our dancers. Our dancers and their families have been extremely positive about the move to the new studio and everyone is very excited about what is to come at Little Gems. I have always prided myself on the strong sense of family that we have created in the school and to commemorate this, the dancers changing area has in it a Little Gems Family Tree made up of the fingerprints of all our dancers and we hope to continue to add more fingerprints to the tree as the school continues to grow. We welcome dancers of all ages, experiences and abilities to the school and make sure that everyone is able to learn a new skill in a fun and friendly environment. It is fabulous that we can now do this in our own building. The family feel of the school is perhaps best explained by one of the school’s two nationally qualified cheerleading coaches Natasha Orr, 19 who said “I have been with Little Gems pretty much from the day it started, from dancing/ acting myself to becoming a coach. Little Gems was always a really positive aspect of my childhood and is a great dance school to be a part of. All of the children are welcomed in with open arms and are encouraged to become the best they can be. With a great team of teachers and a lovely bunch of dancers, Little Gems @ The Studio is the place to come knocking if you’re looking for a dance school for yourself or your little one”.

To mark the opening of the new studio, Little Gems held an official opening event on Saturday 17th February, offering free taster sessions of some of the new classes that the studio will offer as well as inviting along Twist and Pulse, 2010 Britain’s Got Talent runners up and now popular street dance duo. The guys met dancers of all ages throughout the afternoon and taught 3 “streetomedy” workshops to delighted dancers from not only Little Gems but also nearby schools. Twist and Pulse came second to Spellbound in the 2010 series of Britain’s Got Talent and have gone on to become popular performers and choreographers of their own “streetomedy” style of dance, travelling the world to share their love of dance. With their belief that dance should be fun and possible for everyone, Gemma thought that they were the ideal people to bring to the studio to work with the dancers. Twist and Pulse also judged the school’s “Strike a Pose” competition during the afternoon and then performed the important duty of the official ribbon cut to pronounce the studio open. Now that the studio is open the dancers are excited to start classes in the new space. Rebecca Maugham, 12, of Cramlington said "I love the new studio, it is so bright and has loads of room. I can't wait to do my exams there in March. I have been dancing with Gemma since I was 3 doing shows and exams and I love it.” For further information about Little Gems School of Dance contact Gemma Crane on 07821410707 or email gemimalou@hotmail.com 7

eing able to hear – or indeed see – clearly is something that most of us take for granted in our daily lives. So, the loss or impairment of either faculty is something that can have a profound impact on anyone’s life.

Sadly, statistics show that as many as one in six people have some degree of hearing loss and as we grow older that figure can rise to as high as almost half of the population over the age of 50 years old. It is thought around nine million people currently suffer from some degree of hearing loss in the UK and that by 2031 that figure could rise to more than 14 million as they are exposed more and more to high noise levels in today’s increasingly technological world. Not surprisingly hearing impairment can affect so many aspects of a person’s life - with their family, at work or socially - and can leave someone feeling isolated and cut off from society. There are many tell-tale signs of impending hearing loss including having to say ‘Pardon’ all too often; needing to turn the television volume up to the point where it becomes uncomfortable for other viewers; similarly having the car radio or sound system tuned too loudly; finding it difficult to converse particularly in

a noisy background environment such as a pub, café or restaurant; or having problems taking telephone calls. There are, however, steps that those suffering with hearing loss can take to improve their lives and these can be explored by visiting our state of the art, independent clinic on Morpeth’s Bridge Street. House of Hearing, Morpeth opened its doors in May 2017 and will soon celebrate its first birthday by hosting Morpeth’s very first Eyes and Ears show, in partnership with R Green & Partners Opticians. “We are very excited to host the first annual Eyes and Ears show taking place here in Morpeth on Wednesday 2nd May 2018. Together with R Green & Partners Opticians we are holding the event at the Town Hall and will have a range of exhibitors and fascinating speakers from both the Optometry and Audiology world. We aim to bring awareness to the local area and help support those with any hearing care or eye care needs.” Senior Audiologist Sarah Gregg, who heads the Morpeth clinic. HEALTH

LOOKING AFTER YOUR EYES Our sight is so precious, here Kevin Gray of Robert Green and Partners gives advice on looking after your eyes

T

he best way to check on the health of your eyes is a regular sight test with an optometrist who can often pick up some eye problems before they cause significant damage to your sight.

Some eye problems such as glaucoma will not cause symptoms for a long time and early detection, as with most things, makes treatment easier and more effective. Patients I see often ask for advice on maintaining eye health, in particular, with regard to diet. Clearly a healthy diet is beneficial to everyone, but there are some specific foods that can be valuable for eyes. Green leafy vegetables such as kale or spinach are high in micro-nutrients which may delay the onset of age-related macula degeneration (AMD) and cataract, and oily fish, fruit and nuts are good too. Supplements, whilst no substitute for a healthy diet might be appropriate in some individuals. Being overweight, whilst not directly affecting eyesight, substantially increases the risks of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke, all of which pose significant risk of damaging your eyes. Many people don’t realise that smoking doubles the risk of developing AMD, and increases the risk of cataract too, so quitting is important. UVA and UVB in sunlight is harmful to eyes, especially with regard to cataract, and may well be a factor in other eye conditions including AMD. Good quality sunglasses carrying the CE marking will offer protection, especially for people who work outdoors or who have outdoor leisure pursuits, and particularly abroad, at high altitude, or where there is reflected light from snow, the beach or on water. Many regular prescription spectacles can have UV protection built in to them and most prescriptions can be made up as sunglasses. Also, many contact lens brands include UV filters. In addition patients who have had cataract surgery

18

might also benefit from extra protection from harmful rays. Your optometrist can offer specific advice on all of these. Eye injuries at work, in the garden and from DIY are a regular presentation at casualty departments, as are sports related injuries. Wearing appropriate protective spectacles or goggles whilst carrying out these activities is essential. The more dangerous sports for eyes are squash, badminton, tennis and cricket, and sports safety goggles, including prescriptions, are widely available and are highly recommended. Oh yes, and be careful when opening the bubbly too! If you haven’t had an eye examination then booking one is easy. You can find a local optometrist on the NHS choices website, and ask friends or colleagues if there is one they would particularly recommend. Kevin Gray is part of the team at Robert Green and Partners, Morpeth’s longest established Optometrist. 62 Bridge Street, Morpeth, NE61 1PQ For an appointment call 01670 513175 www.greenopticians.co.uk

SLEEP EASY WITH A NEW BED FROM ASHINGTON’S NEW STORE - THE DIVAN CLAN

O

n average we spend a third of our life sleeping, so your bed is a vital part of your life. Finding the right bed and mattress which fits your needs and your budget is so important, but can often be very difficult.

The great news is that a brand new bed shop has opened in Ashington, and it’s not just any ordinary bed shop! The Divan Clan located next door to Argos, in the old Head Gardener premises aims to make bed shopping a breeze. Owner’s Melvyn Barnes and partner Lianne Dixon have almost every mattress, headboard and base you can imagine in store and use a system to help you get the right bed set for you. Melvyn explains that too often when you go bed shopping, you have to take the version on display. This is not the case at The Divan Clan, you can create your own bed in just 4 easy steps. First pick your base from the vast range from single to super king size with handy storage options, then choose a colour to suit your taste. Next is the headboard, from modern greys to plush crushed velvet effect, there’s a wide choice of fabrics. Finally, the all-important mattress, give them all a try and see which one is the most comfortable option for you. A full bed set which includes base, mattress and headboard can be purchased from as little as £134.99 for a double, right up to £799.99. There’s something for every budget. Melvyn and Lianne know it can sometimes be tough to afford a new bed. Especially, if gas and electricity bills are due, the purchase of a bed can be put on hold. In a bid to help customers who may not be able to afford a bed in one go, they have a payment plan option available. You can choose the bed you want, and pop in weekly to pay

He’s really enthusiastic about this new venture, giving customers good value for money and a good night’s sleep! New lines are being added weekly, including children’s novelty beds, stylish mirrors and bedroom sets. If it’s time for you to replace your bed then this new store, and it’s fantastic range from budget to luxury, is definitely worth a look. Melvyn and Lianne look forward to welcoming you in.

MISSING TEETH? JOANNE DUGGAN, PRINCIPAL DENTAL SURGEON AT BEDLINGTONSHIRE DENTAL PRACTICE, DISCUSSES THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO REPLACE A MISSING TOOTH OR TEETH

I

f you have a gap or spaces due to a missing tooth or teeth then there may or may not be a need to fill it. The need to fill a gap really depends on where it is and how it affects you, your oral health and also your general health and well-being.

Some people have a missing front tooth and the appearance does not concern them at all, however other people (me for instance) would not want to be without a front tooth. The options that are available generally fall into 4 main categories as described below, however every person needs to be specifically assessed by their dentist as every case is different and there will be circumstances where some options are suitable while others are not.

DO NOTHING

Sometimes the simplest and cheapest option is to do nothing. This can also be the best, but depends very much on where the gaps are. Loosing teeth can have a huge impact on people ranging from a negative psychological impact and lack of confidence socially due to missing front teeth, to not being able to chew food properly. The loss of a lot of teeth may also make your mouth and lips look sunken in. But if, for example, you have a space from a single tooth at the back of your mouth then you may not even notice too much of a

change in your appearance or function or health of your mouth and therefore you may think replacing it is not worth the time and cost of dental treatment.

DENTURES

Dentures can replace spaces from just one lost tooth (a partial denture) or the loss of all teeth, (a full denture). Unless retained by implants they are removable, which means you can take them in and out of your mouth yourself. It is important to be able to take dentures out to clean them but also to enable you to properly clean any natural teeth. Dentures involve false teeth being placed into a base material that is usually made from either a hard pink acrylic plastic, Valplast (a "flexible" nylon resin), or cobalt chromium metal. Each of these materials has their advantages and disadvantages, some of which are discussed below: Acrylic: This is a hard pink plastic material and tends to be the cheapest base material used. It can be used to make a range of dentures from replacing just 1 tooth, (a partial denture) to all your teeth, (a full denture). The pink acrylic rests on top of the gums, and how secure they are depends on how well they fit. They are usually easy to adjust and relatively inexpensive compared to the other denture materials Cobalt chrome: A metal denture base made with cobalt chrome may be a good alternative if you have had

www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk

FLEXIBLE: ValplastÂŽ is a pink nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures

problems with an acrylic denture fracturing, as the metal base will not fracture. Dentures made of this metal are more expensive to make. Unlike an acrylic partial denture a cobalt chrome denture has the advantage of being able to be retained and supported with metal rests and clasps around some of the remaining natural teeth. This means it can be very secure in your mouth. Perhaps one possible disadvantage is very occasionally you may be able to see a very small amount of metal if a tooth nearer the front of your mouth is clasped, but your dentist would always endeavour to design the denture to reduce the chance of this happening. Although the denture base is made of metal the false teeth are white and attached to the metal with pink acrylic to look like natural gum and teeth. ValplastÂŽ: This is a pink "flexible" nylon resin denture material that is used for partial dentures only. It is supported only by your gums and does not have any metal clasps that will show. ValplastÂŽ will also give a life-time guarantee that the denture base will not fracture. Due to the flexibility of this material they are an alternative if you have had problems with an acrylic denture fracturing. There are certainly other advantages and disadvantages of all three denture materials, so without an examination with your dentist it would be difficult to determine what would be the best material for you. Every case where a denture is needed is different and needs to be assessed so the best material is used specifically for your requirements.

BRIDGES

Before I became a dentist, I did not have a clue what a bridge was. I am sure therefore there are many of you whom also do not know what they are. A bridge replaces a lost tooth or teeth by using either natural teeth or implants next to the gap and they are cemented in permanently. The natural teeth or implants beside the gap are used to support the false tooth/teeth. The proper dental term for the false tooth is the pontic and for the supports are called the abutments. They can be made from gold, metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic or a mixture of these materials. The pontic is permanently cemented to the abutment tooth. The natural teeth supporting the bridge must therefore be healthy and strong enough, just like the design of a bridge crossing a river; if the river is very wide, then mechanically a support on either bank may not be strong enough to support the crossing. Your dentist will examine and advise if the gap is suitable for a bridge. There are generally two reasons when a bridge is not suitable. The first is if the space to be filled is too long and secondly if the teeth at either side of the space are not strong and healthy enough to support it. There are generally 3 types of bridge. A fixed-fixed or conventional bridge involves attaching the pontic to abutment teeth on both sides of the gap.

32

This means the abutment teeth have to be drilled to the correct shape so a crown, or cap, will fit over the top of them. This procedure is destructive as the dentist needs to shape the abutment teeth with a drill and therefore there is always a risk of sensitivity or a problem with the nerve of the tooth at a later date. Your dentist will discuss the risks and benefits of any treatment with you. A cantilever bridge is when a single pontic is stuck to an abutment tooth with a crown on only one side of the gap. An acid etch or Maryland bridge is a small bridge replacing just a single tooth. The porcelain pontic is attached to a small metal wing which is cemented onto the back of only one tooth. The metal work is on the back so you cannot see it when you smile. Only the back of the abutment tooth needs to be slightly shaved and therefore there is very little drilling to be done. This type of bridge is much less destructive and therefore there is a smaller risk of sensitivity and nerve damage. Different bridge types also have their advantages and disadvantages, and may not be suitable for every gap. All cases are different and your dentist would need to assess your individual needs before planning a bridge.

BRIDGING THE GAP: A bridge uses natural teeth or implants beside the gap are used to support the false tooth

There are many different options available to replace missing teeth. It’s best to visit your dentist and have a thorough assessment.

IMPLANTS

It is my view that generally there is a huge misconception about implants. I'm sure some people think if they have poor teeth then they can simply have them removed and replaced with implants and then that's it! Job done and there is no maintenance! This could not be further from the truth as an implant still needs to be maintained and looked after. Just like a normal tooth an implant can have gum disease around it which can make it loose and fail. Not all implants will be a success and if they fail they have to be removed. What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone. An implant can be used to support just one false tooth, or multiple implants can be used to replace a full set of teeth. You have to have surgery to have an implant which involves the titanium post being screwed into the bone of either the upper or lower jaw. Before an implant is placed, you need to be assessed to determine if the condition of your jaw bone is good enough. There are also risk factors that need to be considered such as medical problems, smoking, the existing health of your teeth, gums and mouth as not everyone is suitable to have an implant. After surgery and once the bone has attached to the implant and it is strong then the false tooth or teeth are References www.valplast.com www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/bridgesand-partial-dentures www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/dental-health-bridges#1 www.dentalhealth.org/tell-me-about/topic/cosmetic-dentistry/implants

then screwed into the implants. The implants need to be cleaned twice a day as part of your daily routine. Just like your natural teeth, implants will last longer the better you care for them. This also involves regular visits to the dentist to monitor and maintain them. It is vitally important that after you have implants you still go to the dentist regularly: having an implant does not mean you can forget about your teeth. Implants certainly do not come with a lifetime guarantee! The cost of implants varies but the price is definitely in the thousands not the hundreds. The parts are expensive to buy; they are like the Rolls Royce in replacing missing teeth. If I had a push bike, it would get me from A to B, just like a Rolls Royce, however if I needed a new tyre for my bike it would cost me 10s of pounds. However, If a needed a new tyre for my Rolls Royce (in my dreams I may add), then a new tyre would cost 100's of pounds. The point I am trying to make is the cost of the implant parts are expensive to buy initially but also to maintain and replace due to wear and tear. This has been a very brief whirlwind tour of all the options to replace missing teeth and is in no way a complete article. In summary there are many different options to replace a missing tooth or teeth. If you want to have a gap filled then it is best to visit your dentist and have a thorough assessment so they can discuss all the choices that suit your specific needs.

MAURITIUS Hays personal travel consultant, Brittany Harrison (pictured left), is passionate about travel and enjoys passing on her recommendations to potential customers. Here she shares her own experience of a visit to the beautiful island nation of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean.

M

auritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, best known for its beautiful powder white beaches, turquoise waters and luxury resorts.

Whether you like to chill out on the beach or take on a more active holiday, there is something for everyone in Mauritius. Over 100,000 British tourists visit the island every year. If you are a citizen of the EU, USA, Australia, Canada and a number of other countries you won’t need a visa, initial entry is granted for 3 months. There is only one airport on the island, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. You can fly direct from London Heathrow with Air Mauritius or British Airways. Connecting flights from regional airports are also available. A direct flight from London Heathrow takes approximately 12 hours. Mauritius is a year round destination, ideal for winter sun, and this is considered the best time to go weather wise. High season is between December – February, with average temperatures between 25c and 33c but there is a slight risk of cyclones at this time. December is also the best month for snorkelling and diving. May – September is low season, with cooler average temperatures between 18c and 25c. There are many different attractions and tours that you can do on the island. Many tour operators offer full day trips that cover various attractions in one day. My favourite tour was Dodo’s trail, this was around 10 hours included a visit to the capital Port Louis and the central market. On the way there we stopped off at

Fort Adelaide and enjoyed magnificent views over the town and harbour. After Port Louis we went to a local restaurant, Escale Creole – Table d’Hotes for an authentic Mauritian lunch. The hosts were amazing and it really felt like we were at a family meal, we were presented with Mauritian specialities such as Creole sausages, chicken curry and fricasseed cabbage, all served with a local flavoured rum. We then headed to the Blue Penny Museum and Caudan Waterfront – a modern shopping centre. I also went on a full day scenic tour, the Wild South West. Another long day but a great experience we visited Chamarel Waterfall, 7-Coloured Earth, La Rhumerie de Chamarel, Grand Bassin, Trou aux Cerfs and a ship model factory. The highlight for me was La Rhumerie de Chamarel, it was really interesting to find out how the local rum is made and also sample the different flavours. If you are into hiking, then Black River Gorges National Park is for you! It is recommended you go with a local guide as it is easy to get lost. Mauritius is often a go to destination for weddings and honeymoons, but don’t let that put you off. This is also a great destination for families. With plenty of history, culture and attractions on offer, it is not just for those who want to relax in the sun all day. Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’ I have no hesitation in recommending Mauritius, and we have all year round deals and offers available. As your Hays personal travel consultant you only need to deal with me direct, so rest assured I'll be at the end of the phone or email for any assistance you may need. Booking the perfect holiday for the you is my highest priority, from a weekend away to a dream wedding abroad, I aim to make the whole experience first class. Being part of the UK's largest independent travel company makes me extremely competitive on price, and you'll also have peace of mind that your holiday is financially protected. NEW BOOK EXPLORES THE ICONIC CASTLES OF NORTHUMBERLAND Colin Alexander investigates the story behind Northumberland's famous castles and fortifications in the latest book from Amberley Publishing.

T

housands of years before the Romans and the Venerable Bede, Northumberland was a landscape of hilltop forts, many of which can be traced today. Military order was imposed on the region by Hadrian’s legionaries, who built the 73mile northern frontier of the Roman Empire across the county.

Through the Dark Ages and into Medieval times, the kingdom of Northumbria was governed from massive castles, and the constant threat of the Border Reivers is evidenced in the masonry of fortified farmhouses, pele towers and churches. There are 600 recognised pele towers in England, stretching as far south as Norfolk and Cornwall; 258 of the 600 are in Northumberland. At the end of the border warfare, the magnificent castles became either romantic ruins or stately homes, while Britain’s east coast needed more modern defences against new, foreign enemies. Defensive Northumberland by Colin Alexander has a fascinating array of pictures and includes castles, hill-forts and more, some that are iconic within British history, covering prehistory to the modern day. The author, Colin Alexander was born in Northumberland, and has a life-long passion for local history, sparked by his mother’s copy of The King’s England – Northumberland. Appreciative of the county’s unique place geographically and historically, he has explored

most of its once-inhabited hilltops and its mediaeval castles, and walked the length of its greatest defensive monument – Hadrian’s Wall. He lives in Whitley Bay. Available in paperback from all good bookshops and online at www. amberley-books.com Also available in Kindle, Kobo and iBook formats.

MODERN WHOLESOME FOOD Get your taste buds ready for a treat at Evan’s Bistro in Whitley Bay

W

hitley Bay has a long standing reputation for both the quality and the variety of its eateries. However, the one thing missing in recent years was a quality restaurant serving the best of our local produce in an innovative way.

This changed last year with the opening of Evan’s Bistro, based right in the heart of the town. Evan’s Bistro has quickly gained a reputation for serving great quality hearty dishes with a modern twist, using the very best fresh local produce. Evan's Bistro is located two minutes’ walk from Whitley Bay Metro Station (in the old Tiger Bill's building on Whitley Road). The restaurant proudly sits on the extensive corner plot, boasting 85 covers and giving a modern feel with exposed bricks, booth style seating and a relaxed urban décor. They cater for all tastes, with a menu full of variety and mouth-watering choices. My wife and I have visited the Bistro a number of times since its doors opened, and have always thoroughly enjoyed, not only our food, but out whole dining experience. Our latest visit was on a Saturday lunchtime and, as usual, the restaurant had a really good buzz about it. We sat in one of the booths and took in the atmosphere, 42

We both vowed to sample dishes we had not yet tried so, having scanned both the lunch and specials menu, I ordered the king prawn, courgette and pea risotto finished with fresh mint and olive oil, whilst my wife opted for the vegetarian option of chargrilled halloumi with

roasted tomatoes in a brioche bun with homemade chips. When my risotto arrived, the presentation left you torn between not wishing to spoil the dish, and wanting to dive right in. Of course I took the latter option, and the dish was exactly as I hoped, light, fresh and the prawns were magnificent (in size and texture). I can highly recommend this dish. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her choice, with the roasted tomatoes perfectly complementing the halloumi. The chips, as always, are a nod to the good old days of home cooking. Both of the dishes were very tasty, and we left feeling very satisfied and with no room for dessert! Evan's Bistro aims to be as inclusive as possible, they have Vegan options on their menu (more available on request), are fully accessible and have installed a changing bed that can hold up to 20 stone in their disabled bathroom. They also have a dedicated play area to keep the young ones entertained while you relax and enjoy the food. (although the kids menu is also packed with fresh hearty options). Evans Bistro has definitely brought something new to Whitley Bay. The quality of their food, the ever evolving menu choices, and their portion sizes, combined with their passion have all made for a successful mix, long may it continue. G

olf by the coast is said to be the truest test of a golfers ability, and some of the hardest yet most beautiful courses adorn the shores of the UK. Every seasoned golfer likes to challenge themselves, and few come tougher than a windy day on a seaside course. For beginners this type of course is perfect too, if you can learn to master your craft on such a course, you will have far fewer problems with your game when you play a less challenging one.

So, with this in mind, we would like to introduce you to one of the best clubs in the area, catering for regular players as well as complete beginners. Whitley Bay Golf Club club was originally founded in 1890, and started out on a 2 mile strip of land along the seafront links, eventually moving to its current location in the early 1900’s. Today the course has undergone many changes since that period, and more recently holes 6 to 10 have been completely redesigned to bring them in line with the quality layout that the remainder of the course enjoys. The course layout features many aspects that you may expect of a course near the sea – rolling and undulating fairways, elevation changes, gorse and firm, consistent greens throughout the year, whilst a dene runs through the course and is a feature on many of the holes. Views from various locations on the course are truly

spectacular, whether taking in the course architecture, design and conditioning, looking out to sea beyond St Mary’s Lighthouse, or enjoying the wildlife. The ecology of the golf course is very important, and this has been recognised by finishing runners up two years running at the Golf Environment Awards in the category of Environmental Golf Course of the Year. The club is also one of a few in the North East to have an Indoor Golf Studio. The studio has three practice bays, with one offering Foresight GC2, which allows golfers to practice the various aspects of their games or play some of the best courses in the world, from Turnberry to The Belfry to Troon, to name a few. This is a great facility for those both experienced and new to the game, with lessons being able to be booked with their PGA Professional David Twizell. If you are thinking about starting to play golf, then an adults beginner course may be an excellent introduction to the game, and costs only £25 for the 5-week course. The club also offers 5-hole and11-hole taster golf packages, which allows people to experience playing the course with fellow beginners. The clubhouse is an excellent place to enjoy a drink or meal for both members and visitors, and is open for food and drinks from 11am Monday to Saturday and 12am every Sunday serving traditional Sunday lunch. The club has many social events during the year covering live music, a bridge club and quiz nights with details available on the website. Their Junior membership is thriving and, after a spectacular season last year, the junior team have just recently visited Portugal to represent England in a home nations competition and finished in 3rd place (see Dave Burston’s report, right). Whitley Bay Golf Club is a great choice to visit whether you wish to play the course, enjoy a drink or meal in the clubhouse, or experience a new course in the Indoor Golf Studio, everyone is very welcome. Please contact our Club Secretary Dawn Ridley on 0191 2520180 to discuss your specific golf experience requirements. Whitley Bay Golf Club, Claremont Road, Whitley Bay NE26 3UF. I’d like to personally thank everyone who contributed in any way towards the Juniors trip to Portugal, and made the event possible. We had a fantastic time, and played some wonderful golf. Initially we were drawn into Group 2 against Murrayfield, Llanwern and Lundin. On Thursday we played Murrayfield in awful weather and secured a well deserved draw 3-3. Friday morning we teed off early against Llanwern, again in dreadful conditions. It was extremely tense, as most of the games went down 18th, however we lost 3.5-2.5. Saturday we drew against Lundin Links 3-3, in front of the Sky Sports cameras, again everyone played extremely well, with some excellent matchplay golf. The format left us in the strange position of either fighting for 3rd and 4th spot, or 7th and 8th based on our results that day as we finished in a tie for 2nd place with 3 other teams. We scraped into second place based on our performance against the other two teams in the league. Sunday was a great day, we were drawn against New Club St Andrews, who's were also low handicappers. We really raised our game and beat them comfortably 4.5-1.5 to secure third place. Sky Sports were present for the last two days, and I was amazed as we played our best golf in front of the cameras. My thanks must firstly go to our Team players. They were incredible. We have 8 Juniors to be proud of. The experience they have gained is immeasurable. If I must single anyone out, I have to mention Rosie Belsham as she was awarded the Ladies best player, and she demoralised the opposition No. 1 players with 3 wins and a draw. Thanks also to the parents and our supporters who witnessed the event, I hope you took away some great memories and will continue to support our great team. The Juniors will always remember their trip to Portugal and on their behalf I thank you all. Check out Sky Sports Golf in the next month or so, to see birdies galore, chipping in from off the green, a tap in knee knocker and a great display by all. Well done Team Whitley Bay, bring on 2018 and thanks to our Junior Sponsor for 2018.... Dixon, sorry Nixon Hire.

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE

Whether you’re a small business, sole trader or have a site as a hobby or side-hustle, having a good website is essential. Aube Creative share their 10 ways to make sure your website is as easy to use (and as user-friendly) as possible... MAKE IT IS SMARTPHONE-FRIENDLY

ALWAYS USE RELEVANT IMAGERY

MAKE SURE IT LOADS QUICKLY

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!

We live in a Smartphone Society (Google claims 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead) so your website must display beautifully on mobile phones and tablets. People have less patience these days. Always make sure your website loads quickly and presents them what they want to see and sharpish. Faster speeds also improve your overall Google ranking. Good quality hosting always helps.

MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE

If a full-on photo shoot is out of the question you can always use good quality stock photography instead. Make sure the images match what your content is explaining. Avoid using images from free stock libraries which everyone uses over and over again. Keep it really simple. Don't bombard your readers with jargon only you and your team can understand. If neccessary, use a glossary. And avoid spelling mistakes.

CALLS-TO-ACTION

Develop an SEO strategy. Consider the search terms your audience might use to find you. Include content that's relevant: how-to videos, blog articles, e-books...

What do you want people to do once they've landed on your website? CTA buttons are one of the many elements used to indicate the next action a user should take. Example call-to-actions are: Download your Price List, Newsletter sign-up, Enter a competition...

MAKE IT EASY TO NAVIGATE

DON'T FORGET YOUR CONTACT INFO

Stick to navigation protocols people have come to expect. Always ensure navigation buttons are obvious and easily identifiable (towards the top of the page is best) and that all your links are working correctly so the user can quickly switch from page to page.

DISPLAY A STRONG CONSISTENT BRAND MESSAGE

Project the right image. Position your logo and core message in the top left hand corner. It’s the part of the screen to which our eyes are most naturally drawn.

Make it VERY easy for people to get in touch with you. You'd be surprised how many websites don't display correct contact info on every page. And it's so important!

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Your website is usually the first glimpse a potential new customer will get of your business. And first impressions last forever. Asking a professional to help can often save you time and money while you focus on developing your business instead.

NEED SOME HELP? Founded in 2008 aube=creative loves helping customers to create websites their own customers will love to use. Consultations are FREE. Call Paul on 079393 02550. Or visit aubecreative.co.uk 50

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 56

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. 90 BRAND NEW HOMES UNVEILED FOR SALE AT SMITH’S DOCK

P

laces for People and Urban Splash, the joint venture redeveloping Smith’s Dock in North Shields, have revealed for the first time their site-wide masterplan vision; it shows the extent of the new Tyneside community, with many of the planned residential and public realm phases visible.

The reveal comes ahead of the creation of 90 new homes at the waterside development, many of which will be launched for sale in March. 80 of the properties will be housed within the waterfront Smokehouses; the two buildings – designed by Simpson Haugh– will comprise a range of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom properties each offering amazing views of the River Tyne and will be ready for occupation from early next year. Prices start from £125,000. Stuart Wheeler of Simpson Haugh said: “It’s incredibly exciting to see Smokehouses take shape, one of the first phases of the Smith’s Dock masterplan we’ve been developing with Places for People since 2009. Inspired by the site’s rich history, and in collaboration with Places for People and Urban Splash, we’re creating unique, light-filled and spacious homes, the quality of which sets a benchmark for the rest of the development of the landmark site.” A further 10 homes will be launched for buyers looking for spacious family homes; known as Fab House, they are designed by North East TV star and architect George Clarke in conjunction with TDO TRANSFORMATION TEAM (L – R): Guy Ackernley of Urban Splash, George Clarke, Mark Latham of Urban Splash and Nigel Brewer of Place for People.

62

Architecture, and stand adjacent to the three-storey Town Houses launched at the scheme late last year. Speaking of the Fab Houses, prices which start from £225,000, George said: “I am thrilled that we can now show buyers around these homes. What we’re creating here are proper family homes that are spacious, well planned and will encourage family living.” Tom Lewith, director, TDO Architecture said: ‘We are delighted to have contributed to this pioneering project. Fab House is the culmination of a rewarding design collaboration with George Clarke and extensive R&D with SIG Off-site. Modular construction has a vital role to play in reaching house building targets and as a young practice we’re excited to be part of this” Added Nigel Brewer of Places for People: “I’ve been involved in this project for many years now and it really is exciting to have reached this stage. It shows just how we’re working to make the whole area make for a wonderful community; it’s an important historic site and its redevelopment is the epitome of true regeneration – with diverse home designs, sensitively designed public spaces and the reopening the stunning waterfront.” Concluded Guy Ackernley, director of residential sales at Urban Splash: “The Smokehouses and Fab Houses bring more options to Smith’s Dock; it’s a demonstration of how varied we want the residential offering to be here and means that we can now offer properties across a much broader price spectrum. “We’ll have some amazing apartments on offer from a great, first time buyer friendly price point,of £125,000 through to the last remaining three-storey family homes on offer in the Town House first phase of the scheme. Help to Buy is available on some homes too too, making these homes an accessible option for local customers.” To register your interest or secure details ahead of the launch, please contact Rose Miller at Sanderson Young on 0191 580 7999 or email rosemarymiller@smithsdock.co.uk.
