HEALTH
Infant Summer Safety By Jill Santonastaso
As the countdown to the summer holidays begins, the warm weather and sunshine bring a buzz of excitement for the imminent BBQ’s, adventures and trips to the seaside that we've all been craving after the long, wet winter! Summer is the perfect time of year for many alfresco family activities, it's also the time of year doctors and medical staff see an increase in the number of patients affected by the heat and sun. Wearing sunscreen and drinking water are a good start but Jill Santonastaso from Daisy First Aid fills us in on what else you can be aware of to help protect your family this summer.
Sunburn
Sunburn is probably the first thing we worry about when taking our little ones out on a hot day so of course we slather on the factor 50 and pop their sun hat on! But this is not just restricted to really hot and sunny days. It is often on cloudy days with a slight breeze that we underestimate the strength of the sun while we are outside. Sunburn is often a superficial burn to the outer layer of skin, it will be red, sore and swollen. If it looks raw and blistered, this indicates a partial thickness burn that's damaged 2 or 3 layers of skin. For babies and children, we should seek medical advice for any burn to their delicate skin, as should anyone where the burn covers a large area. This could range from a call to your GP or 111 to visiting a minor injuries unit or emergency department. Any burns to the face, hands, feet, genitals or a circumference burn need hospital treatment. With advice, mild sunburn can
most likely be treat at home. Move the child indoors or to a shaded area and cool the skin with a cool shower or a cool, wet compress or sponge. Never cool the skin with ice. Have the child drink plenty of fluids, ice pops and lollies come in handy here! Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be taken if safe to do so. Gently applying a water based lotion or petroleum jelly will help keep the skin cool and moist. Until the skin has healed, keep it covered and out of direct sunlight. If at any point your child becomes unwell or you have any other concerns, seek medical advice. Severe sunburn can include blistering, swelling, fever and chills. Never burst the blisters, cool as before and cover with cling film. Headaches, vomiting and dizziness could also indicate heatstroke, sunstroke or heat exhaustion so a medical assessment will be required. Severe sunburn can occasionally need hospital treatment with medications and dressings. Of course the easiest way to treat sunburn is to prevent it. Babies under six months should always be kept shaded and out the way of direct sunlight. Children should wear suitable clothing, a hat, a minimum SPF of 15 which includes both UVA and UVB protection and ideally play in the shade from 11am to 3pm. Personally, I always go for a factor 50 on my two. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going out and reapplied regularly. No sunscreen is truly waterproof so where splashing, paddling and swimming are involved, reapply every 1 ½ - 2 hours.
Heat Stroke
Heat Stroke is less common but a very serious condition where the body is no longer able to cool down, the temperature control part of the brain fails along with the ability to sweat. This leads to fevers rising dangerously high above 40°C and requires immediate emergency treatment. Symptoms include a throbbing headache, feeling dizzy, nauseous and vomiting similar to heat exhaustion but may also include fainting, confusion, disorientation, low levels of consciousness and the possibility of a seizure. Skin will looked flushed and will be hot and dry to touch. Move the child to a cool shaded area and call 999/112 for help. Remove clothing and wrap in a cool wet sheet until the temperature returns to normal. Take care not to over cool the child too quickly. As with sunburn, the easiest way to treat heat exhaustion and heat stroke would be prevention. Along with sunscreen, light clothing and shade between 11am and 3pm remember to stay hydrated throughout the day, plenty of cool food and drinks, salads, fruit, ice lollies and a cheeky ice cream will all help! Cooling your skin with a damp cloth or a sprinkle of water is a good idea too. Don't forget to take a peek in the toilet after a wee, if it's darker than normal or you're going less often, it's time to top up your water bottle!
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is more likely to affect babies and children. This is the body's reaction to loss of water and salts through excessive sweating and the core body temperate rises above 38*C. Symptoms often occur in the late afternoon or early evening and if left untreated, can quickly lead to heat stroke. Symptoms to look out for include tiredness, weakness, feeling dizzy or faint. Pale clammy skin that feels hot to touch although the child may say they feel cold. Intense thirst, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. As well as racing pulse, headache and decreased urine output. Respond to these symptoms by moving the child to a cool, shaded area. Let them lie down and remove any excessive clothing. Cool skin as mentioned above and offer water or fruit juice to rehydrate. Ideally oral rehydration solutions and isotonic drinks are best as they also replace the lost body salts and aid recovery. Always read the instructions and gain parental consent if treating a child in your care. Always obtain medical advice, even if the child recovers quickly.
Daisy First Aid Classes for Parents & Carers last 2 hours and cover responding to a medical emergency, CPR, recovery positions, head injuries, febrile seizures, choking, allergic reactions, meningitis, fractures, poisons, burns and bleeding. For further information email jill@daisyfirstaid.com 7

LOCAL NEWS
NEWBIGGIN SPORTS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE BECOMES COMMUNITY HUB
N
ewbiggin sports and community centre is to become a vibrant new hub for local people and a one-stop shop for many council services.
As well as sports and leisure, the centre will become home to library services and a range of other council services, including the Men with Sheds project, and a key facility for local groups to use. Northumberland County Council has announced plans to relocate the town’s library from its outdated premises on Gibson Street, into a new space in the Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre. Expected to take place later this summer, the move will provide visitors with an enhanced library service, with extended opening times, improved parking facilities, and access to a wider range of council services under the same roof. The move is part of a major review of council buildings and assets which has identified opportunities to generate more than £33m in capital income, contribute significantly to economic growth and regeneration, and achieve annual savings in council running costs of £3.4m by selling off surplus buildings and ensuring all our remaining properties are fit for purpose. Council Leader, Grant Davey, said: “The relocation of the library into the sports and community centre makes perfect sense both for local people and the future of council services in Newbiggin.
“Local groups will find a new home, the centre will be busier and more lively than ever - precisely what has happened at Ashington - and it will provide a new focal point for the community that will contribute to the ongoing regeneration of the town. “In these times of austerity, when council resources are stretched like never before, it’s important we continue to see the opportunities. Elsewhere across the country, key services such as libraries have been cut completely but we are working to protect ours. That is no mean feat but we are confident we now have a model that is going to work for the people of Northumberland.” In its current location, Newbiggin Library is open just 24 hours a week over five days but customers will now be able to access resources seven days a week once it moves to the new site. As part of the review of buildings it owns the council is also looking to sell Woodhorn Villa on Woodhorn Road and has offered the arts group which currently uses the building the opportunity to relocate to the sports and community centre. The redevelopment by Arch of two former public houses will continue and become a key part of the ongoing regeneration of the town. The Front Street development will include commercial opportunities and an office for Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Town Council, along with modern and accessible public conveniences, and apartments available to rent on the upper floors.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY … BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT
Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

KNOTS, NETS & NAUTICAL ADVENTURES This Summer At Old Low Light Heritage Centre
Dig the Festival of Archaeology with guided walks, talks and discover what might be under your feet; or discover a hidden talent with our Mouth of the Tyne Traditional Skills Fringe Festival. A full programme of events for adults and small fry awaits visitors to the Old Low Light Heritage Centre this summer.
The Shipyard Painters Exhibition July 22nd – September 18 ‘The Shipyard Painters Exhibition’ will highlight the huge amount of artist talent which existed amongst its thousands of employees from draughtspeople to riveters. Co-produced and curated by Old Low Light volunteers and Tynemouth Fine Art, the exhibition will draw on private and public collections to explore the works of art created by employees of the Tyne’s famous shipyards. Swan Hunter is synonymous today with shipbuilding, but amid the company’s sometimes turbulent past the yard produced lots of creative innovations. From July 22nd – September 18, visitors
COMMUNITY
to the Old Low Light will be able to discover that ships were not the only crafts produced at the Swan Hunter yard. The shipyards of the Tyne, such as Swan Hunter and Hawthorn Leslie, are renowned for the technical expertise involved in designing and building some of the world’s largest and most famous ships - including RMS Mauretania, HMS Newcastle, HMS Ark Royal, Atlantic Conveyor and Esso Northumbria. As a relief from the meticulous detail of the drawing office and the precision engineering of ship fabrication, a wealth of original art was created in their leisure time by some of the artistically talented men and women who worked in the shipyards. Paintings by employees of the yards were shown at occasional exhibitions organised by an informal Swan Hunter Artists Group in the 1970s and 1980s, but most of their work is little known outside the local area. Our ‘Alpha Omega: Beginning and End’ Exhibition’ by local photographers The Swan Snappers will be complementing The Shipyard Painters with twenty four images creatively documenting the beginning and end of Swan Hunter’s hey days To accompany the exhibition there will be lots of hands-on family activities, talks and outreach events throughout the summer.
‘Docks and Robbers’ a lighthearted interpretation of life on North Shields Fish Quay will be on display throughout the summer in our Heritage Gallery. The exhibition which will be curated by volunteers and retired members of the maritime police, will illustrate some of the hidden stories of life on the Fish Quay and river. Local historian and author Charlie Steel will be giving a talk on Tynemouth’s House of Correction as part of this exhibition at 11:00 on 16 July. Dig It: Celebrating Festival of Archaeology 15 – 16 July Join us during the Festival of Archaeology, and dig for treasure. Archaeology gives us that tangible link to the past, showing us how our ancestors lived, and what everyday life was like for the communities who lived along the river. Bring the family along and learn how to did, identify and clean and catalogue artefacts. Let’s see if the sea has left any treasure on the beach and discover the secrets of Clifford’s Fort. We will also be joined by Dr David Petts from Durham University on 23 July at 11:00 who will be talking about recent coastal discoveries which are being unearthed along the coast. David will also be encouraging you to pick up a trowel and get involved in some of the community digs happening around the region.
Mouth of the Tyne Fringe Event: Traditional Skills and Music Festival 09 July The Festival is in collaboration with North of England Civic Trust, whom for several years held a similar event at Tynemouth Station. The day will be shared with lots of local musicians including the Mouth of The Tyne Choir. The festival begins on Friday 08 July with Kirsty Bromley and Lucy Wise and their ‘Two Hemispheres Tour. This concert of two travelling songstresses from Australia and Sheffield has its roots in Celtic, American and English Folk music and we are pleased they have chosen Old Low Light to give their only ‘Up Close and Personal’ gig of the tour. Tickets are available from Old Low Light and cost £10 A fantastic opportunity to discover the skills and crafts used to develop and maintain North Shields’ Fish Quay. The festival is in collaboration with North of England Civic Trust, and will be shared with lots of local musicians including the fabulous Mouth of the Tyne Choir. Local artisans will be sharing and demonstrating a huge range of traditional skills from rug and leather making, to wood turning and knot splicing. www.oldlowlight.co.uk 19

LIFESTYLE
W
6 TIPS FOR GREENER, HAPPIER LIVING
hether you take shorter showers, reduce food waste,or make eco-minded choices at the supermarket, adopting one simple habit can make a difference in protecting Earth’s natural resources. These simple, renewable lifestyle changes may even affect your personal mindset. According to a scientific study, adopting simple renewable lifestyle habits can help people go from feeling glum to good. According to the survey, a majority of people (70 percent) feel happier when they make choices that help preserve natural resources. Adopting one of these simple renewable habits can help preserve the planet’s resources while fast-tracking levels of happiness: 1. Conserve Resources, Including Water. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that cutting your shower by just one minute will save two and a half gallons of water. Over time, that savings adds up: 75 gallons per month and nearly 1,000 gallons over the course of a year. 2. Choose products in renewable packaging. Choosing food and beverage products in renewable packaging is a natural extension of environmentally friendly habits, such as recycling or composting. From milk and soup to water and juice, you can find food products packaged in cartons – primarily made from paper, a renewable resource from growing forests. 3. Make your house energy-efficient Having your home properly insulated, switching off lights and appliances when they’re not needed, switching to energy-saving light bulbs, buying energy-efficient white goods when it’s time to replace them not only cuts
carbon emissions and helps the environment but also reduces energy bills. 4. Buy only what you can consume. At the supermarket, it’s easy to over-shop, especially if you’re hungry. Buy only what you need to reduce waste and seek groceries that are considered renewable, such as fruits and vegetables, and carton-packed food from renewable materials. Also, making meals using what you already have at home not only saves time and money – with food waste costing the average household £470 a year – it helps the environment too. There are endless recipes available online for free that can inspire you on what to do with leftover portions or ingredients. 5. Leave the car at home For shorter journeys consider leaving your car keys at home to walk or cycle, both of which are healthier alternatives that will get your body moving - helping to maintain weight, cut your chances of cancer and heart disease, keep stress at bay, and alleviate mental health conditions like depression and anxiety – as well as saving on emissions. For longer journeys consider car sharing schemes or public transport, both of which are more economical, as well as more environmentally friendly, options. 6. Choose charity shops Vivienne Westwood famously told us to “stop shopping” – urging consumers to only purchase what they really need in order to cut down on waste. Buying from vintage or charity shops is cheaper; makes for a less generic, and thus intrinsically more stylish, look than shopping in chain stores; keeps transportation emissions down and clothes out of landfill sites and reduces the demand for cheap throwaway fashion made using unethical manufacturing methods. 27
TIME FOR TEE?
Living in Northumberland and North Tyneside, we are blessed with a diverse range of good quality golf courses. The region is home to a huge number of courses, including challenging links settings, courses filled with hazards and water features – even venues on the PGA EuroPro Tour list! Here we have selected just a few local courses you may wish to try, courses that are challenging for the experienced golfer, whilst being playable for beginners at the same time:
LEISURE
from Tee to Green, and the 15th which is played over a cove with the Sea from Tee to Green. The Club was founded in 1913 and was originally a 9 hole course until its upgrade to a full 18 holes in 1976. BEDLINGTONSHIRE
Bedlingtonshire Golf Club was founded in 1972 by Bedlingtonshire Urban District Council. The Council saw the need for additional sporting facilities in the town, and purchased 127 acres of land (100 acres of which had been opencast mined) from the National Coal Board who restored, landscaped and fenced the site. The course was designed by Frank Penninck. In 2001 the members took over the running of the Club from Wansbeck District Council, and in 2008 purchased the Club outright from the Council. In the last 10 years the Club has invested some £400,000 on course and clubhouse improvements. In 2011 the Club hosted the Northumberland County Championship which is a measure of the progress made by the Club. The course is parkland measuring 6813 yards, par 73, and can prove a real test of golf, particularly in windy conditions. All but three holes were part of the former opencast coal site. A large number of conifer and deciduous trees and shrubs have been planted which have now matured giving beautiful tree lined fairways. The course demands good straight drives and accurate iron play into
tight and bunkered greens. The facilities include generous practice areas for putting, chipping and bunker shots, and a separate practice area for general irons and woods practice. Experienced pro shop staff, excellent catering and a warm welcome awaits you. Tel: 01670 822457 Green Fees Starting From: £13.00
SEAHOUSES
Seahouses Golf Course is one of the traditional Northumberland Golf Courses, with a standard scratch of 68 which, given the links conditions and undulating landscape, is seldom bettered. The course has spectacular views from many tees and greens, and boasts two of the most prestigious par threes in the North of England. The 10th, over a Loch that stretches
WHITLEY BAY
The golf club is situated at the North East Corner of the town, and the course is surrounded to the North and West by rolling fields, with views to the east of the coast and Whitley Bay Lighthouse and visitor centre. The course is widely regarded as one of the finest and often challenging courses of the North East Area due to its undulating fairways, with a dene running through that requires a good drive and carry to successfully negotiate it on several of the holes. The pleasant Clubhouse with welcoming staff and good food ensures visitors will have an enjoyable visit. Tel: 0191 2520180 Green Fees Starting From: £25.00

ALNWICK CASTLE Alnwick Castle Golf Course is a medium size but quite challenging Par 70 parkland course, stretching over 6,200 yards. The course incorporates 4 par three’s, 12 par four’s and 2 par five’s, giving golfers of all abilities an enjoyable round. On top of the stunning views the course offers, the signature hole is affectionately known as the ‘Lang Whang’, where golfers who are willing to take a risk with a huge drive will be rewarded. The course prides in its layout, with the 18 holes stretching over 6,250 yards, and this undulating parkland golf course is ideal for golfers of all abilities. There are many natural hazards, including grasslands and gorse, providing a fantastic test of golf with a mix of
par threes, fours and fives. To add to the spectacular views, Alnwick is also home to a variety of wildlife including Deer, Pheasant, and Northumberland’s specialist, the Red Squirrel. Tel: 01665 602632 Green Fees Starting From: £27.00 PARKLANDS Parklands Golf Club is set on the grounds of the beautiful High Gosforth Park and has seen many changes since it was established in 1966, originally known as the John Jacobs Golf Centre. At the time of opening there was just a driving range, until 1971 when a 9 hole course was opened. The
club and facilities have constantly evolved from this day, and the course is now 18 holes, with the club itself now a complete golfing facility. The club offers a range of golfing facilities which caters for golfers of any age and ability. With a 28 bay driving range, an 18 hole golf course and an 18 hole mini-golf course, Parklands Golf Club has it all. So, whether you fancy brushing up on your teeing off skills at the range, playing a few rounds on the course with friends, or enjoying time with the family for mini-golf fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re looking to take up the game, but don’t know where to start, the club also has qualified instructors on hand for coaching and tuition, plus during the school summer holidays their Junior Academy can prove invaluable. Open to members and nonmembers all year round, and with Newcastle Racecourse set within the High Gosforth Park grounds too, a day out at Parklands Golf Club can make the ideal corporate event too! WORK SET TO BEGIN ON £550K COMMUNITY CENTRE REVAMP
A
£550,000 revamp of Druridge Bay Community Centre is scheduled to begin in August. The Hadston community centre is to be transformed into a modern multi-purpose facility, complete with a gym and boxing centre, and will be delivered in two phases as part of the capital works programme. Phase one will involve the full internal refurbishment of the centre and will begin later this month (June). Phase two, due to commence later in the summer, will see the construction of a two-storey extension that will include a community gym on the ground floor and a first floor dedicated to the town’s thriving boxing club. The new gym, to be managed by Active Northumberland, will be equipped with the latest state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Local people helped to shape the plans and contributed ideas to the project, when they attended a consultation event in February.
The original proposal was to build an entirely new leisure centre but everyone recognised the potential to improve what was already there, giving local people a community centre to be proud of while also providing a permanent home for the local boxing club. County Councillor Scott Dickinson, said: “This is a well-loved community centre, which local people clearly feel an affection for. So it’s very exciting to be in a position where we can get to work on a project that will improve, modernise, and preserve the building for future generations. “The centre will be refreshed both inside and out and, together with the new extension, will provide a range of facilities and activities for the community to use, while also giving our local boxing club the permanent home that they deserve.” The project is due for completion later this year and is being delivered by architects Crawford Higgins. Plans are also being drawn up to enhance the green space on the former Middle School site across the road.

3 Natural textures like washed woods and wicker give depth to the look, while anchor and fish motifs plus porthole mirrors add a little tonguein-cheek nautical charm. Opt for pared back style with washed woods and pale textiles. With the addition of nautical cushions, sea-green glassware and key accessories like model sailing boats and beachy artwork, you can create a living area that’s as calm and cool as an ocean breeze.

ADVICE
CLEARING THE CLUTTER Summer breaks from day-to-day routines are great for making new family memories. They are also great for taking some time to recall previous ones often found in items around the house.
F
rom those old baby clothes and toys, to books and dusty tech you haven’t touched in years, these “memories” may be cluttering your home. Spend some time as a family and clear out what you no longer need. For some extra motivation, approach your cleaning with a fresh perspective: donating your gently-used items will help others while freeing up space for new memories. Get on your way to a cleaner, less cluttered home with these tips: Take it one room at a time Whether you live in a modest apartment or a sprawling single-family home, overhauling your entire living space at once is an overwhelming prospect. Instead, focus on one room at a time with a timeframe that makes sense for your schedule. Don’t save the worst for last Avoid the temptation to leave your messiest catch-all room for the end. Instead, tackle it first and spend extra time thinking about where you can reassign some of the clutter, so it’s not all accumulating in a single room. Sort your stuff into piles In every room, you’ll find items you need to keep close at hand, others you’d like to keep but could be stashed away, things that may have value to others and stuff that simply needs to be trashed. Give items meaning Implement a rule that items you keep should be at least two of three things: functional, sentimental and beautiful. If an item is none of these (like an old food
storage container without a lid), toss it. Especially if you are low on space, only hang on to those items that serve two or more roles. If you find it hard to let go, take a cue from Marie Kondo, the world's most celebrated decluttering guru author of the Her first book, The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying, was a bestseller on five continents, selling five million copies. She encourages readers to put everything they own in a pile, clasp each and every object, then keep only those that 'spark joy', booting out everything else after thanking it for its service. Look for ways to give back While it sometimes makes sense to resell unwanted items online or, donating is another way you can give these goods a second life and help bring warmth, happiness and smiles to others. Clothing is one of the best things to donate so others can make better use of the gently-loved items you are hoarding. Unless a garment has been worn in the last four seasons, donate it. Other prime candidates for donating: toys, sports equipment, DVDs and home gadgets. Remember to complete a gift-aid form, which means the charity can claim an extra 25p for every £1 generated from the sale of your donations. Organize what remains Once you’ve cleared the clutter and determined which items will stay, find attractive ways to create order and manage the mess. You can choose from a wide range of organizational options – everything from shelves and baskets to storage furniture and closet systems – to help make the most of your space and reveal more inviting rooms that make you feel comfortable at home.

HEALTH
TOP TIPS FOR FEELING
HAPPIER Happiness, something we are all striving for, but which often seems to elude our daily lives and we can often be left feeling that we are just ” getting by” day to day rather than feeling a real sense of happiness and joy. Is there a way to change that? Can we be happier whilst still dealing with all that life throws at us? Irene Anderson explains a few small changes that she found helpful in bringing about a greater sense of happiness in her life
BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE GOT
YES, may sound crazy if you are feeling frustrated by your life at the moment BUT, taking time every day to be really grateful for what you already have, makes a HUGE difference in how you feel about your life. Start with the smallest of things. You have a comfortable bed to sleep in, food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over your head. What else are you grateful for in your life? Try keeping a gratitude diary for a few weeks and see how you feel. Acknowledging and being grateful for what you have already is the first step in feeling happier.
STOP WAITING TILL EVERYTHING IS PERFECT
So many of us use the phrase, “I'll be happy when “as in, I`ll be happy when I have lost weight, got a new job, when the kids are older, when I`ve retired, when I'm making more money. Each phase and time in life has its own problems and, if we look for them, its own joys. Accept that nothing is ever perfect and enjoy what you have in the moment. Here`s the truth, there will never be a” perfect time “so you may as well decide to enjoy the point you are at. There is a wise saying, “happiness is a journey, not a destination.” Make the most of the journey.
DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS
There will always be someone cleverer than us, richer than us , better looking than us, but constantly comparing yourself to others and envying their life is a sure fire way to make yourself feel down in the dumps. We never really know what is going on in the lives of other people and even those who may appear to have a perfect life will undoubtedly have their own
struggles. That is what being human all is about. SO, instead of comparing yourself unfavourably with others, make a list of what is special and unique about YOU and what you bring to the world. Are you a great friend, wife, husband, parent? What is it about you that others appreciate, enjoy and love? Become your own cheer leader.
MOVE ON
Don’t become a hostage to your past by always reviewing and reliving your mistakes. Don`t remind yourself of what should have, could have or would have been. Release it and let it go, we all make mistakes, learn from it and MOVE ON.
CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY
Make a decision each morning to be happy. (This one may take a bit of practise) BUT our thoughts about things are what determines how happy we are. Look for the lovely things each day brings, try and make someone else`s day better by paying them a compliment or doing something for them. Practise being the one who has something positive to say. Challenge yourself to find the good in the world. Start your day spending a few moments breathing deeply and visualising yourself being able to deal with everything that comes your way. If you make a mistake forgive yourself and move on and do the same for others. Small things done regularly make big changes. Try out these tips and catch yourself feeling happier for no reason.

TECHNOLOGY
8 TIPS FOR CREATING A STRONG PASSWORD P
assword management firm SplashData released their list of the 25 worst passwords of 2015 and in the process, illustrated how many online users share the same or similar, weak passwords. This frightening data shed light on how many people still use out-dated and obvious techniques to protect their details on many websites. With this in mind, and considering the extreme importance of some passwords we use online (banking in particular), One I.T. Support have compiled some handy hints and tips for making your passwords slightly more difficult to hack than '123456' or the old favourite, 'password'. 1 - Length is an advantage, the longer your password, the more difficult it will be to guess, so don't be afraid to choose a lengthy one. Experts advise between 12 and 14 characters, but many sites don't have a maximum character limit so by all means go longer. 2 - If the website requires a number within the password, steer clear of birthdays, addresses, mobile numbers and other such numbers that could be discovered elsewhere. Pick something that you can remember but isn't instantly obvious, the number of houses you've lived in or number of times you've been to a certain holiday destination, whatever number you know that someone else can't guess. 3 - Don't allow your browser to remember your password for you. Although it's easier and more convenient, and constantly requested, should your computer be stolen, every password you have is instantly useless and whoever has the computer now has free access to everything. 4 - Stay away from words on their own. Also avoid obvious substitutions, 'passw0rd' also made it onto the
25 Worst Password list even though it combines words and numbers. 5 - Use a different password for each major account, emails, banking, credit cards etc. Again this is insuring yourself from losing everything in one go. 6 - Constructing a password from a sentence can aid your memory recall and yet be nigh impossible to guess, for example the sentence 'I like my tea with two sugars and lots of milk' would become 'Ilmtw2salom', a nice combination of letters, with a number and a capital letter yet nonsense to an outside observer. 7 - Similar to number 6, don't be afraid to create nonsense words or squash bits of several words that make sense to you, together. The first two letters of every month with 31 days would give you the password 'JaMaMaJuAuOcDe' for example. 8 - Or if all else seems impossible, use a Password manager, although you'll still need to remember your password for that! A password manager will store your login information for all the websites you use and help you log into them automatically. They encrypt your password database with a master password – so the master password is the only one you have to remember, and now of course you have tips to help you create a good one! So, hopefully this list will aid you online. Whether you use some of our tips or all of them, your safety and the safety of your data online is the key, so good luck and remember, Cypw&ywgw! (Choose your passwords wisely and you won't go wrong!) If you have any more queries or questions, please get in touch with One I.T. Support Ltd by calling 0191 2960111 or visiting www.oneits.co.uk
