HERE COMES THE SUMMER TO

NORTHUMBERLAND LIVE!

T

The Undertones

This is a great opportunity for the people of Northumberland to attend the festival to have a great free day out in Blyth.

he Undertones have been announced as the first band to play next year’s Northumberland Live series of festivals, including the hugely successful Blyth event.

Timeless hits such as ‘Here Comes the Summer’, ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ and “My Perfect Cousin” will be heard across South Beach at Blyth on 24th June 2017 as well as the ground-breaking ‘Teenage Kicks’ which was famously played twice in a row on primetime BBC Radio 1 by DJ John Peel. The Undertones originally released four studio albums and thirteen singles before breaking up in 1983. Now they are back after reforming in 1999 with a new frontman, the flamboyant Paul McLoone who took over from original singer Feargal Sharkey. Recently the band has played at sell out venues and festivals all over Europe but it will be their first ever visit to Blyth. The festival’s tradition of staging bands with well known sing a long songs follows on from last year’s successful appearance of Scouting For Girls at Northumberland Live where approximately 15,000 people turned out to watch the band and enjoy all of the other activities on offer. Once again, Blyth Town Council will sponsor the Northumberland Live Festival at Blyth and Chair of Blyth Town Council Events Committee, Councillor Kath Nisbet, is already looking forward to the festival. “Northumberland Live is all about bringing the very best international acts to South East Northumberland; and at the same time giving local performers a chance to star alongside these chart 10

favourites. I’m delighted that this festival helps to put Blyth on the cultural map and encourages tourism and investment. The Undertones are a quality band that appeal to people of all ages and together with a great range of support acts, Northumberland Live at Blyth is guaranteed to be a great free family fun day out.” Organiser of the event, Mel Jackson from Jigsaw Event Management said.” This is a great opportunity for music lovers, families and the people of Northumberland and for those travelling from near and far to attend the festival to have a great free day out in Blyth. As usual, there’ll be something for everyone with a family activities area, superb street theatre, fun fair, wonderful food concessions and of course, great music. “We are delighted to announce that this year’s media partner will be Metro Radio who will add a new dimension to the festival.” If you would like to know more, or be involved in the festival, please get in touch via the Facebook page or email northumberlandlive@gmail.com

DOG LOVERS URGENTLY NEEDED IN 2017 Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a national Charity that trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds, is scouring Tyne & Wear for dog-lovers willing to take care of their adorable puppies. Caroline & Terry Roeves, volunteer puppy socialisers, say“We have had our first puppy Daphne, a Show Cocker Spaniel, for just over a year. Now we have dozens of new friends from regular dog walks. We are so much fitter and enjoy opportunities to socialise Daphne in local libraries, schools, stores, cafes and restaurants. Daphne loves all of this and the fuss that is made of her. We love volunteering for Hearing Dogs. Being part of the Hearing Dogs family is an experience that far exceeds our expectations and puts a smile on our and others’ faces every day. We would definitely recommend puppy socialising for Hearing Dogs, your life will change for the better from day one!” Hearing Dogs for Deaf People relies on its extensive network of more than 1,900 volunteers across the country in order to continue its life-changing work. In particular, the Charity is looking for dedicated local dog-lovers to become ‘Puppy Socialisers’ in 2017. Lucy Parkin, Puppy Training Instructor for Tyne & Wear adds: “If you live in the area and are looking for something new to do this year, then why not give something back and meet some

14

loveable life-changing puppies along the way? As long as you have a car, a secure, private garden, and enough time to train a puppy daily, then we would absolutely love to hearing from you. You really can make such an enormous difference.” To find out more about puppy socialising, contact the volunteering team on volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk, 01844 348122 or visit our website www.hearingdogs.org.uk/volunteer

“WHEN THE BOATS CAME IN” FOR THE NORTH SHIELDS FISHERMEN’S HERITAGE PROJECT …

North Shields is England’s largest prawn landing port and, during this prawn season, the North Shields fishing fleet, as well as visiting boats to the port, together with prawn merchants Caley Fisheries, Coquet Island Shellfish and Moir Seafoods made a significant donation of £3,930 to the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project (NSFHP) who are raising funds for a memorial to fishermen lost at sea from the port. The donation was a great boost to the start of 2017 fundraising – taking the total raised so far to almost £29,000. NSFHP have continued to receive donations from far and wide for the memorial. A painting of the Gaul/Ranger Castor by fisherman/artist Michael Smith was donated to NSFHP and sold for £500 to Sharon North from Hull - she was just 3 years old when her father Billy North was lost at sea when the ship went down on 8 February 1974 with 36 men on board. Gaye and Hugh Hutchinson

18

from “Release Potential” – a company dedicated to helping the long term unemployed gain confidence ready to return to work - donated £500 to the fundraising. William Oliver & Rodman Russell Ltd, a metal fabrication business in Little Bedford Street, North Shields donated £300. Paul Barbrook MD of WORR said - "We have been doing work for the fishing industry in Shields for many years now and we are delighted to be able to give something back and get this long overdue Memorial built in memory of those who never came back to port." Local author Dan Turner's Business Manager Amanda pictured with Paul and NSFHP Chairman Terry McDermott.

recently published book entitled "Life on The Tyne" received sponsorship from six local businesses – Irvin’s Brasserie, The North Shields Fish Quay Company, J R Fisheries, Percy A Hudson, Seaview Fisheries and Royal Quays Marina - together with a donation from graphic designer Raspberry Creative Type. This sponsorship, plus initial book sales (50 pence donation from each books sold) meant that just before Christmas, Dan presented NSFHP Secretary Joyce Marti with a donation of £275. NSFHP Volunteer Keith Bell brought in several donations from a number of ship yards including as far afield as A&P Tees in Middlesbrough who donated £250.

And proving that there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’ the Tynemouth Ladies Luncheon Club donated £100 to NSFHP Vice Chairman Henry Howard. The Sir James Knott Trust donated £5,000 and is so far the single largest donation to date, however a local Facebook group “Floppsie Cullen’s Tynemouth” who with some 1,700 members have been fundraising for over a year and have pledged to present NSFHP with a cheque very shortly of between £7,500 - £8,000. Terry McDermott (Chairman of NSFHP) said “The donation from the ‘Floppsies’ will take our fundraising to almost £37,000 of the £72,000 we need for the “Fiddler’s Green” sculpture by Ray Lonsdale, and is an amazing contribution – we are absolutely delighted.” NSFHP are one of two causes to benefit from “The Green Carnival at the Coast” which will take place at Tynemouth Priory on Friday 17th/Saturday 18th March. Keith Spedding (Fundraiser for

NSFHP) said “The Green Carnival will be a great family fun event – there’ll be a range of activities, including a 3km and 5km fun run, street performers, food concessions, music, a zip wire, a best dressed dog competition and the opportunity to be part of a World Record attempt at the largest human shamrock. NSFHP will also be present in one of five interactive worlds and I’m sure our vice-Chairman Henry Howard might even be tempted to join in with the Irish dancing!” It was Henry Howard who first raised the issue of a Memorial to lost Fishermen and he is the emotional heart of NSFHP. Born in Dublin, Henry fished out of Eire for 25 years, principally in the seas of Iceland and the Russian Coast – notoriously dangerous waters. Henry first went fishing when he was only 13 years of age, and he’s had a few narrow escapes, most notably when he was cast overboard after his duffle coat was caught by a stray hook from the gear! He was hauled back aboard

by a boat hook and told to get back to work – Health and Safety not being high on the agenda in those days! Henry said “We have come such a long way since the launch of our fundraising in July 2016 when we had just £4,000 – I am truly delighted that both the local community and business want to help us get this memorial in place. I am really looking forward to The Green Carnival – an event where Irish meets Geordie. I really believe that NSFHP have momentum now and I fully expect this to be a ‘monumental’ 2017! “Go raibh míle maith agat!" - which basically means "Thank you very much!"

DENTAL ACID EROSION ARE YOUR TEETH BEING ERODED AWAY BY ACID?

What Is Dental Acid Erosion? Dental acid erosion is the loss of enamel and dentine from teeth as a result of excessive acid in your mouth attacking your teeth. Once the outer protective enamel has been lost the tooth is damaged for ever, it cannot be reversed. It is different to decay which is caused by bacteria in plaque breaking down sugars into acid that attacks and decays (or rots) your teeth. Dental erosion is common; even in younger children. What Are The Signs Of Acid Erosion? It may be difficult for you to see the signs of erosion. Regular dental check-ups are important so your dentist can inform you if erosion is evident and advise you accordingly. Erosion is most commonly seen in upper front teeth 22

but teeth in all areas can be affected. You may notice a change in the appearance of your teeth; they may look glassy, or translucent (slightly grey on the tips) and change shape. Erosion usually wears away the tooth surface and biting edges. It can progress to remove all the enamel and expose the darker, more yellow dentine underneath. You may find your teeth become more sensitive to hot and cold, or acidic foods and drinks. Fillings too may start to become more prominent if the surrounding tooth surface is dissolving away due to erosion.

Where does the acid come from that causes acid erosion? Well, it either comes from inside your stomach or from what you eat or drink! People whom suffer from conditions which cause acid reflux or vomiting can be affected by acid erosion. Stomach, or gastric acid, as it comes into contact with the surface of a tooth will cause erosion. Acidic foods and drinks such as fruit and fruit juice, particularly citrus ones such as lemon, grapefruit and orange, contain natural acids (citric acid and ascorbic acid) which can be harmful to your teeth, especially if you have a lot of them often. A different example is pineapple, which is not a citrus fruit but also has a high acidic content due to ascorbic acid (vitamin C) which again can be erosive

if excessively and frequently eaten. More examples of erosive food and drinks include vinaigrettes, vinegar, pop, sports drinks, fruit flavoured teas and carbonated drinks. It is important to remember that even the ‘diet' brands are still harmful. Even flavoured fizzy waters can have an effect if drunk frequently, as they contain weak acids which can harm your teeth.

Don't brush your teeth for at least an hour after consuming anything acidic.

How can I protect my teeth? There are a number of things you can do: • Visit your dentist for regular check-ups. • Try to reduce the number of times a day you have acidic food and drinks, The best time to have them is just at mealtimes. This will reduce the number of acid attacks on your teeth. • Plain, still water is the best drink for teeth. • Drink acidic drinks quickly, without holding them in your mouth or ‘swishing' them around your mouth. • Use a straw so acidic drinks go to the back of your mouth and therefore touch fewer of your teeth. • Finish a meal with cheese or milk as this will help neutralise any acid. • Chew sugar-free gum after eating. This will help produce more saliva to neutralise the acids. • Don't brush your teeth for at least an hour after consuming anything acidic, (or being sick or if acid reflux affects your mouth). This is because acids soften the tooth surface and brushing straight afterwards will remove some of this softened enamel. If you wait an hour the acid will have neutralised and the enamel will have re-hardened. • Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste. Use a small-headed brush with medium to soft bristles. Your dental team should advise you on the best brush and brushing technique for you. Chewing sugarfree gum after eating, helps to neutralise acids.

How can it be treated? Dental erosion does not always need to be treated. It is so important that the cause of any erosion is identified and halted before any treatment is required. With regular checkups and advice, your dental team can prevent the problem getting any worse. If a tooth does need treatment, it is important to protect the enamel and the dentine underneath to prevent sensitivity and prevent any further tooth surface loss. Sometimes simply adding a filling onto the tooth will be enough to repair it. Your dentist will be best to advise you if any treatment if necessary.

If in doubt, get checked out! To book an appointment with Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice please call 01670 828402. 30 Front St East, Bedlington NE22 5AA bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk

RESIDENTS HAVE THEIR SAY ON MORPETH'S LEISURE PLANS Residents were out in force to have their say on plans for a brand new leisure centre in the heart of Morpeth. The state-of-the-art complex will also house council library and customer services - with a high-quality hotel and restaurant potentially completing the prestige riverside site. Well over 100 members of the public called into the current leisure centre in Newmarket to talk about what facilities they may like at the centre and complete a survey on leisure provision in the town. Council leader Grant Davey said: “This exciting development will give even more reasons for people to enjoy the vibrant shopping, leisure and cultural attractions of this historic market town and I’m glad so many people were able to attend and have their say.

24

“A lot of people were positive about the planned new facilities while there were also views expressed on everything from car parking to detailed questions on future library and leisure provision in the town.” Morpeth is also one of four Northumberland towns earmarked for new multi-storey car parks to make shopping and business even easier for the growing numbers of locals and visitors. Cllr Davey added: "This administration is committed to reinvigorating all the market towns across Northumberland, via sound investments and creative use of restricted finances. “For this Morpeth development we were determined to pursue proposals which were in the best long-term interests of not just Morpeth but of all Northumberland's residents - not

necessarily plans which might have offered the most money immediately.” People who were unable to attend the drop-in event can still complete an online survey via www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ morpethriverside

If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 26

PLAY BOOST FOR DR PIT PARK Work has started on a project that will help to improve and regenerate Dr Pit Park in Bedlington. The project will see improvements to play equipment, paths, trees and shrubs and will continue over the winter and next spring. Most recently children and young people from Whitley Memorial First School, St Bede’s Primary and St Benet Biscop Academy joined county councillors Alyson Wallace and Val Tyler, town councillor Paul Hedley, and Lyn Horton from the youth charity Leading Link to open a new interactive play feature in the park, the SONA Dance Arch. Councillor Wallace allocated £5,126 of her members’ local improvement schemes funding to the SONA Arch. She said: “I was delighted to be able to help fund the dance arch. It’s already capturing the imagination of the local children and will provide a play experience that is unique not only in Bedlington but throughout Northumberland. I hope that it will give a lot of pleasure to both local youngsters and also to those visiting from outside the area. ”

TASTY & EASY

CHICKEN, HAM AND PEA PIE TAKES 1 HOUR SERVES 4

✳ 4 large chicken breasts ✳ 30g butter, melted ✳ Sea salt and black pepper ✳ 250g frozen peas ✳ 100g ham, torn into pieces ✳ 300ml full fat crème fraîche ✳ 3 tbsp double cream ✳ 3 tbsp fresh chives, chopped ✳ 3 tbsp grainy mustard ✳ 500g ready roll puff pastry ✳ 1 egg, beaten Method

1

Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Place the chicken breasts in an ovenproof dish and brush with the melted butter, season with sea salt and black pepper. Place in the oven and cook for 20 - 25 minutes, until just cooked through. Remove from the oven, cool slightly and remove the skin and slice into chunks. Place into pie dish or into a baking dish with a lip. Blanch the peas in boiling water and drain immediately and scatter over the chicken with the ham. Mix the crème fraîche, cream, chives and mustard together and spoon over the top of the chicken mixture and grill for 5 minutes until heated through and golden brown. Create a pastry lid - On a floured surface, roll the pastry to thickness of 1cm, cut a long strip as wide as the rim of the pie dish and using a little beaten egg, fix to the edge of the pie dish. Brush with the egg, and then lift the rest of the pastry over the pie, using the rolling pin to help. Gently press the edges with your fingers and trim with a sharp knife. Brush lightly with the beaten egg to glaze, then bake for 25 - 30 minutes or until the pastry is risen and golden brown.

2 3 Also present at the opening were Jeannie Kielty from the Banks Mining Community Fund, which generously assisted in funding the project, and Marc Petretti from Jupiter Play who supplied the equipment. Jeannie Kielty, development relations coordinator at the Banks Group, said: “The Banks Mining Community Fund is committed to supporting local environment and community projects in Northumberland and we have been really pleased to be able to help in providing the improved play facilities at Dr Pit Park.” Bedlington East county councillor Val Tyler is also allocating money from her members’ local improvement schemes funding to the regeneration work within the park. As cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture at Northumberland County Council, speaking about the launch of the new equipment, Val added: “This new dance arch is a brilliant new attraction for the park - which will allow children to enjoy fun, active play in an outdoor environment. I look forward to seeing it very well used.”

RECIPE

MINCE & DUMPLINGS

A real winter warmer, by Baker Be Mince and dumplings are a firm favourite in our house. This recipe makes enough for the four of us but we are quite piggy! It’s real comfort food for cold nights. You can substitute the beef mince for veggie mince and can use wholemeal flour instead of white if you want to be healthier. Thank you to my good friend Tracy who gave me her dumplings recipe a few years back. It’s a winner!

INGREDIENTS For the mince: 600 g beef mince 1 onion 1 carrot Handful of frozen peas (or Sweetcorn if you prefer) 600ml beef gravy Salt and pepper to season Olive or coconut oil for frying For the dumplings: 4oz self raising flour 2oz suet (I use vegetable suet) 5 tbsp. water Handful of chopped parsley

Tip!

Add parsley, herbs or even cheese to your dumplings.

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to Gas mark 6, 200°C, 400°F. 2 Finely chop the onion and fry gently in the oil in a frying pan. 3 Add the mince and cook until browned. 4 Chop the carrot into small cubes (approx ½cm) and add to the mix. 5 Stir in the gravy – I just use gravy granules to make my gravy. 6 Add a handful of chopped peas. 7 Season to taste. 8 Simmer gently whilst you prepare the dumplings. 9 In a bowl mix the flour, suet,

parsley and water together. This should form a dryish dough. If the mixture isn’t coming together add a splash more water. 10 Roll into balls between your palms. I make 8 dumplings with this mixture. 11 Pour the mince mixture into an oven proof dish and put the dumplings on top of it so half are in the mixture and half are poking out. This way, once cooked, the dumplings are crispy and brown on top and soft underneath. 12 Cook for approximately 20 mins until the dumplings are golden brown and the mince is bubbling.

FOOD REVIEW

ASHIANNA - DELICIOUS, HIGH QUALITY INDIAN CUISINE

I

t has been 7 years since we first reviewed Ashianna for ABC and, since our very first visit way back in 2009, we have become firm fans of the restaurant, returning many times over the years. Ashianna has been a long established restaurant on Bedlington High Street for many years, and it is no wonder given the consistent high quality of food they produce and service they offer. Looking back at my review in 2009, I wrote ‘High quality food in relaxed pleasant surroundings, we will be back!). Well, here we are in 2017, and it’s nice to see a local restaurant still producing the same consistent high standards of cuisine, so we thought it only fair that we remind our readers about what we consider to be one of the best Indian restaurants in the region. Ashianna is situated on Bedlington Front Street West (next to TSB bank), and there are a few free parking spaces at the front, with plenty more just at the back. The restaurant itself is clean and airy and a nice size, especially in midweek where there is always a nice atmosphere without you feeling too crowded. The interior is modern and classy, and the gentle music always gives a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere. My wife and I shared a Chicken

38

Chaat Masala starter, which was beautifully fresh, and mild enough for my wife, but with enough spice and flavours to appeal to me. For my main course I decided to step away from my normal choice of Chicken Masala and, after being recommended a few dishes by the extremely knowledgeable waiter, chose the Lamb Laziz dish. The dish is described as slightly hot (although I think the amount of flavour masks the heat, so those who like a milder curry should still look at this dish as an option), flavoured with peppers, onions, green chillies, ginger, tomato and spring onions. This was the first time I had tried this meal and it certainly won’t be the last, packed with flavour and really tender lamb, a definite triumph. My wife opted for the ever popular Chicken Tikka Biriyani and gave it a big thumbs up. We chose onion pilau rice to accompany the meal along with a chipati (perfect when made into pockets and filled with Lamb Laziz!) –both of which were

excellent and plentiful. One of the good things about this restaurant is the choice of food on offer. If you like a traditional favourite the menu has them all, but there are also a great selection of dishes unique to Ashianna to choose from and, if you are feeling adventurous, the waiting staff are always on hand to talk you through dishes you may not have come across before and give you their recommendations. So, if you live in the local area, are a fan of Indian food, and you haven’t visited yet, I can’t recommend Ashianna highly enough! A community resource in Morpeth’s Stobhill has been boosted by the addition of the new room suitable for meetings, training courses and other services that are provided at the local Link iLearn centre. Stobhill Community Link iLearn Centre offers a comprehensive range of support and other services for local people at its base at 37 Shields Road in Stobhill. Job search, CV preparation, interview preparation and other training and guidance to help people with their employability are all available there. Local residents can also sign up to learn computer skills, while other initiatives coordinated from the venue include a gardening and handyman service for those unable to cope with some home tasks; a free paint service; Stobhill Community Allotment; and Stobhill Growing for Green. Local county councillor Ian Lindley helped to establish the community link in Stobhill back in 2008, and has continued to find public and private sector support and funding. He has also allocated amounts from his members local improvement schemes budget for aspects of the work there - the most recent being £5,700 towards the room extension. Cllr Lindley says: “The services here at community link are fantastic for local community members - and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t been here to call in to see what we do here. “This new room is going to make a real difference to what the team can provide - offering a meeting space, a training room, and somewhere that people can have interviews or even confidential chats.” Brooke Burgess, manager of the Community Link iLearn Centre added: “This new space is going to make a huge difference to the services we can offer here - and I urge local people to drop in and see it. “I would like to thank everyone who have been involved in the project, and who have donated items and given their time to complete the room. “At the iLearn centre we welcome volunteers who can help with all aspects of the services provided from here. Anyone who has experience or skills that they think they could use to support local community members is encouraged to get in touch with us.”

SUFFERING FROM DOMESTIC ABUSE? THERE IS A WAY OUT

D

omestic Abuse is a hideous crime which shatters lives, often in secret, leaving people feeling vulnerable and trapped. You do not have to be trapped; there is a way out. Shock new figures released by the Crown Prosecution Service show that offences of violence against women and girls continue to increase. The number of convictions for domestic abuse offences is at a record high. Whatever your perception of domestic abuse is, it does not respect geographical lines, gender or social class. It affects men and women and is spread across the full spectrum of society. Many people tend to think domestic abuse is limited to the use of violence and intimidation but it is much more far reaching. The Government definition of domestic abuse is: Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional It is not just violence. Abusive behaviour can involve damaging

46

someone’s self worth, controlling finances, manipulation, preventing someone from having friendships or hobbies, humiliation, making someone feel guilty about what they’re wearing and what they eat. The list goes on. The Government have consulted on creating a new offence of domestic abuse, criminalising coercive and controlling behaviour. Other protective measures have been introduced and the police have additional powers. Most people don’t know where to start and are in fear of contacting agencies and the police for fear of repercussions. Then of course you worry about the practical things: Where will you live? Can you stay in the home? Can you be protected by court orders? How you will receive an income? What about the children? How do I pay for help? Speaking with a lawyer in complete confidence is the place to start. We can provide all of the

answers and information you need so that you can make informed choices without your abusive partner knowing anything about it. You do have options. We can assist you to obtain the necessary orders to protect you and/or your children without your abusive partner knowing in advance if the abuse is particularly serious and we can assist you to plan for all of the practical things in advance of any action being taken. If things are particularly serious, court orders can be obtained the same day. Legal Aid can still be available to assist you regardless of your income We offer a free, no obligation initial appointment for up to 30 minutes where you can receive practical information about all other questions you may have, so get in touch today to make a free appointment with a specialist local lawyer and know your options.

If this affects you and you need to talk to someone in confidence about what you can do to stop the abuse please contact Clare Usher or Amir Assadi now by phone on 0191 296 1777 or by confidential e-mail to lawyer@hindle-campbell. co.uk to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss how we can help you.

HEALTH

TACKLING TINNITUS Tinnitus is a common hearing problem, which can affect people in many different ways. As it is Tinnitus Awareness Week from 6-12 February, we discover more about the issue. What is tinnitus? Tinnitus is the term for the sensation of hearing a sound in the absence of any external sound. You might hear different types of sound, for example ringing, buzzing, whooshing or humming. These can be continuous or they can come and go. The tinnitus might seem like it’s in one ear or both, in the middle of the head or even be difficult to pinpoint. Some people may think the noise is coming from outside and hunt for it until they discover it’s actually inside them! Who gets tinnitus? Tinnitus is very common and is reported in all age groups, even young children. Tinnitus is more common in people who have hearing loss or other ear problems, but it can also be found in people with normal hearing. The experience of tinnitus is different for different people. Most people find that it doesn’t affect them in any way. Some people find it moderately annoying with others finding it very troublesome. What causes tinnitus? Whilst we do not know the exact 48

causes of tinnitus, we know that it is not a disease or an illness. It is generally agreed that tinnitus results from some type of change, either mental or physical, not necessarily related to hearing. It is generally accepted that it isn’t only a change in the ear that can result in tinnitus, but it could be due to a change in our stress levels, for example, with tinnitus being noticed after periods of significant stress, a change in life circumstances or general wellbeing. Fortunately, tinnitus is rarely an indication of a serious disorder and a doctor will be able to check this for you. What should I do? The first person to talk to is your GP. You may need to be referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon or an Audiovestibular Physician, who will rule out any medical factors, assess your hearing and probably give you some information about what tinnitus is and how best to manage it. Some hospitals have hearing therapists or specially trained audiologists who are available to offer more support, if you need it. The most important thing to do is to keep doing the things you enjoy. If you start living your life differently to accommodate the tinnitus, it’s just going to seem more of a problem. You may need to do things differently, for example reading with some background music on, but it’s important that you do them nonetheless. It does improve When you first experience tinnitus, you may naturally be worried and very aware of this new sound. Hearing tinnitus for the first time can be quite frightening if you think it means that something is wrong with you, or that it might change your life. It’s a new sensation and you need to give yourself time to adapt. Most people find that their tinnitus does seem to settle down after this initial period, even without doing anything in particular. You might hear this being referred to as habituation. It’s a bit like walking into a room with a noisy fan or air conditioner. Initially, it seems really loud and then after a while, you stop noticing it as much. Tinnitus can often be much the same.

THINGS THAT CAN HELP Talking to someone People around you may not understand what tinnitus is and how it might affect you, so might not be able to give you the type of support you need. It can be really helpful to talk to someone who has experience of tinnitus. Meeting people who have been through the same things you are going through right now can be very helpful. There are Tinnitus Support Groups around the country. Not only can you pick up tips from others, but you can gain (and give) support simply by sharing your story with people who understand because they’ve been there themselves. Relaxation It is quite common to feel anxious and afraid when you first experience tinnitus. By relaxing more, you may be able to feel less stressed and so notice your tinnitus less. Learning to relax is probably one of the most useful things you can do to help yourself. A really easy way to relax is to find somewhere peaceful and just slow your breathing down (feel free to have some sound on in the background). You can take a few slow deep breaths and pay full attention to the feeling of the breath entering your body, filling your lungs and leaving your body.

Using a hearing aid Loss of hearing is often an unnoticeable and gradual process, and many people are surprised when they are told that they have a hearing loss. If you have hearing loss, using hearing aids can be helpful for tinnitus because they are restoring what you can’t otherwise hear. Using sound Tinnitus is usually more noticeable in a quiet environment. It’s a bit like candles on a birthday cake – in the lights, the candles aren’t very bright but if you turn the lights off, the candles seem much brighter. With tinnitus, when there is other sound, it doesn’t seem that loud, but when you turn all the other sound off, the tinnitus seems much more noticeable. A lot of people have found that using background sound helps them – this can be a radio, music, or using natural sounds.

Addressing sleep problems People who live with tinnitus might have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. In order to sleep well, our bodies and our minds need to be relaxed. Worrying about the tinnitus, or worrying about how much sleep you’re getting (or missing out on), is unhelpful and will only make it more difficult to sleep. Working through problems during waking hours is better than in the middle of the night when you have nothing else to occupy you. Having some soft sound in the bedroom can help some people with tinnitus sleep better. The type of sound you use is up to you – as long as it is pleasant or neutral. Professional support If you are referred to a specialist tinnitus clinic, and your tinnitus is particularly troublesome, you will be introduced to more formal or structured ways of managing tinnitus. Most centres use a combination of approaches which include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfullness, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) Take care of your hearing Frequent, prolonged exposure to loud noise increases the risk of getting tinnitus, or of making it worse, so take care to avoid very loud sounds, or protect your ears against them. Wear proper ear protectors (not cotton wool) when hammering metal, using power tools or when you are near any noisy motors. Ear protection is also important if you watch live music or play in a band or orchestra. For more information visit www.tinnitus.org.uk or contact The British Tinnitus Association on 0800 018 0527.

NEW AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR NORTHUMBERLAND VILLAGE Work is just getting started on the building of eight new affordable homes in the Northumberland village of Stannington. Social landlord Isos Housing is leading the £800,000 development, and the main contractor is Morpeth-based NB Clark. Isos is providing four 3 bed houses and four 2 bed bungalows on the site, located on land next to Beechlea on the northern edge of the village. The development is being funded by Isos alongside a contribution of £200,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The architect is HMH Architects, based in Gateshead. Isos has consulted extensively with Northumberland County Council and with Stannington Parish Council, to ensure the new homes match local housing needs. Vince Walsh, development and regeneration manager for Isos Housing, said: “We know the level of demand for good quality, affordable homes in an attractive village like Stannington. “We often find that families are being priced out of areas where their parents and grandparents have lived, so it’s vital for the local area that we can provide these homes in such an excellent location.” 54

Allan Hepple, Northumberland County Council's cabinet member for housing, said: "The lack of affordable housing is one of the biggest issues facing people in Northumberland and the council has placed a strong emphasis on building new affordable homes. "We are pleased to be working in partnership with Isos Housing to provide much needed affordable family homes, allowing local people to stay in areas where they grew up." The new homes in Stannington form part of Isos’ regionwide development programme for 2016/17, with new affordable homes being built on a variety of sites - a total of 254 new homes are due to be completed by March 31st 2017

‘IF HISTORY WERE TAUGHT IN THE FORM OF STORIES, IT WOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN’ - RUDYARD KIPLING

T

raditionally heritage centres were not built to listen, however the Old Low Light Heritage Centre on North Shields Fish Quay is aiming to address this with its 2017 programme of events. Honestly, I wonder how many of you reading this feel a strong sense of belonging in your local museum or heritage centre, let along one of the big nationals. How many of you can say that you feel that your voices and sense of place are connected to the objects that are on display? In the words of the America’s great arts leaders ‘Heritage reminds us that we belong, “voice” offers the promise of what we can become. An individual life that exhibits a balance between heritage and voice can be thought of as rich and empowered.’ (Eric Booth At the Old Low Light, we believe in the power of our objects tell these stories, and these stories to act as kind of talismans that get handed down through the generations. Organisations like the Old Low Light are guardians of these stories helping us all to

58

understand who we are and our connections to our wider global family. Without doubt there is little doubt that stories can transform us. Compelling storylines in soap operas can both represent and reflect societies’ values which can in turn help break down barriers and prejudice without the need for activism and policy. This year we are inviting people to come and help make things happen as we dive into our fishing waters to create this summer’s hero participatory exhibition; ‘It Started With A Fish … … the origins of North Shields.’ We want our communities to help us develop an exhibition which will tell stories that will open up debate as well as engage. For over a thousand years hundreds of families have made their living from fishing and its associated industries. We are asking people to be part of telling the story of this unique heritage and distinctive lifestyle. Themes that we are asking our communities to explore are; methods of fishing, role of women in the industry as well as the social and economic conditions

that saw North Shields become England’s largest prawn port. From the early 13th century the growth and prosperity of North Shields depended upon fishing and the industries which supported it. From the ship’s nets and its decks an entire economy grew and fortunes were made thanks to this resource. For every one man at sea, there would have been five on land supporting the industry, and we would love people to bring in their both their objects and any memories that run alongside them. ‘It Started With A Fish’ will prompt us to ask some bigger questions, such as how can the sea’s resources continue to feed a world’s growing population? What can sustainable and responsible fishing be? We want to open up the exhibition to allow as many people as possible to have their say; from fishermen and trawler owners to organisations committed to protecting the environment and biodiversity. What memories of the fishing industry do you have? How did the industry bring the community together? Which of your memories belong to be shared with the Old Low Light’s visitors? If you have fishing stories, images and objects you would like to share so we can feature them in our exhibition and as part of our resources, please email; pearl.saddington@oldlowlight. co.uk or call in we are open 7 days a week from 10:00 – 3:00

FOR THE HOME

HEALTH CHECK YOUR HOME Dealing with damp patching up walls or unblocking dirty dreams may not be quite so appealing as adding a new kitchen. But keeping on top of hall maintenance tasks is vital as the longer you leave a problem the more damage it will cause to both your home and finances. Treat your timber If timber windows and doors have seen better days and it's high time you break them up start by standing back any flaking paint before filling gaps around frames using a flexible exterior sealant. Clean thoroughly then prime and finish using a microporous paint such as little greens intelligent exterior eggshell ÂŁ30 per litre.

Cure condensation. Condensation is a common cause of damp and mould, especially in humid kitchens or bathrooms, so here a few quick fixes. If you don't have an extractor fan, and make sure you have one fitted. Opening window is often all that is needed to reduce condensation. Never be tempted to seal a vents or close window trickle vents, as both allow fresh air to circulate even when windows are closed. Use preparatory fungicidal sprays to read walls, grouting and sealant of on-site three and potentially dangerous black mould. Add a permanent protectively are to walls and ceiling is with Ronseal anti-condensation paint simply leave white or add colour using Andy any standard of motion topcoat Water woes Pipes and seals are the main culprits when coming to internal leaks and can easily go unnoticed leading to more serious damp

60

issues. So stop the raft by looking out for tell-tale patches on floors walls or ceilings and unexplained drips of puddles. Check for damaged or badly installed pipes and appliances especially dishwashers washing machines weeping radiator valves and feeling sealant around Bath’s and showers. DIY solutions are readily available or find an approved plumber.

TIP!

Fill your bath with water before applying silicone sealant, then leave until dry to ensure it sets in the correct position

Pipe down If noisy pipework is a nuisance first check your water pressure is correct. Loud banging can often be cured by draining the system, well securing rattling pipes should put a stop to vibrations. Finally, take the time to wrap things up with pre-split installation tubes, to avoid freezing and flooding.

Absorb damp in wardrobes with lavender scented no spill hanging sachets that contain micro that contain my sheds all being hygroscopic crystals I do you for those musty wardrobes and drawers ÂŁ10.29 for eight sachets and for hanging hooks from Lakeland.

Crack the decorating Preparation is key to any decorating job, so if your walls are amazing cracks, small things out using a soft, or drying filler or simply skim the entire area. Plasterboard walls will need patching, well gaps around pipes and skirting soon disappear under a line of paintable sealant

expanding form. However, do be aware that larger cracks or movement could signify structural issues so have a chat with a surveyor Or builder if you're worried. Removing wallpaper can spell disaster for all the plaster, so forget all that scraping and steaming, and simply prime, seal and prepare a well hung papers for painting, using wallpaper cover of ÂŁ24.99 Disguise hairline crack's and imperfections with Anna clipped as extensive range of paintable smooth and textured papers. Ditch the dodgy electrics whilst calling in the professionals is vital when remedying faults here are some simple checks you can do today. Ensure you have RCD protection in your fuse box as this will switch off the electricity automatically when there is a fault. Make sure plug sockets are not overloaded consult consult an online socket calculator at www. electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk Inspect plugs and sockets for signs of damage, check for burn marks or warmth and listening out for bruising or crackling. All the signs include flu fuses blowing or circuit breaker stripping. Only use cables in tiptop condition and never trail them under carpets or rugs. Check light fittings are not visibly damaged and are in good working order.

DEALING WITH PESKY PESTS How to identify and deal with common household pests.

Rodents A smell of ammonia scrabbling sounds droppings footprints knowing marks and damage food containers all indicate rats or mice have been invading your room and whilst pest control is often the answer you can dictate visitors by ensuring food waste is properly sealed and stored and blocking exterior holes with wire wool metal plates of cement. Ants With infestations on the rise the key to prevention is to stop them at source using an insect powder and follow a chemical trail so nest detection is very straightforward and often identified by small piles of earth in the soil or the base of walls. While using sealed food containers and wiping down surfaces will also help keep your home and free. Flies As well as being annoying fly spread home for bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli peppering surfaces with Dark clusters of pinhead spots and infesting foods with eggs in markets. DIY sprays and light traps will normally solve the problem along with regular deep cleaning and covered food waste. Moths Wardrobes in closets provide a perfect habitat for hungry months leaving textiles riddled with holes small infestations can be dealt with using DIY sprees balls and traps however for large infestations professionals use a pheromone treatment to break the reproductive cycle. Keep moths at bay with Cedar Sprays, ÂŁ11.95, The Holding Company

FINANCE

Debt can often be a difficult thing to admit to but we know it causes untold misery to many people and their families. Dealing with money issues can sometimes be off-putting, but you could end up losing out financially or getting yourself deep in debt. Citizens Advice can help you to get your finances back into shape.

DEALING WITH THE DEBT HANGOVER... There are numerous causes of debt and we know that once people tackle the issue they can feel much better about their predicament. Debt doesn’t go away by itself. It can lead to serious consequences and ill health. Here at Citizens Advice, we offer people help to face the problem and work together to look at options and solutions. These can range from help with budgeting, ensuring you are in receipt of all the benefits you may be entitled to, help to prioritise what payments are important, help to negotiate with creditors, consider options like bankruptcy or Debt Relief Orders. Being in debt can be stressful and it can be difficult to know what to do first - especially if you’re constantly getting letters and calls from the companies you owe money to. You might be thinking about taking out a loan to pay back money you owe, but this can make the problem worse when there might be a better solution for you. There’s no debt problem that’s unsolvable. If you do need debt advice now, call Northumberland Adviceline on 03444 111 444 or see our website for our opening hours: www.citizensadvice.org. uk/northumberland 62

What to bring to on your Citizens Advice visit It’s important that the adviser you speak to has as much information about your case as possible. If you don’t bring the necessary paperwork with you, you may have to come back another time. This means it could take you longer to get the help you need. It will be really helpful to make a list of your creditors and how much you owe each one. Find any letters and emails you’ve had about your debts, along with the credit agreements you’ve signed. For each debt, you need to find: the name of the creditor - a ‘creditor’ is any person or

company you owe money to your account or reference number a copy of the loan agreement you signed (sometimes called a ‘credit agreement’) how much the debt is now If you don’t have an up-to-date statement from a creditor, you can ask them for one. This will tell you all the payments you’ve made and what’s left to pay. Don’t forget things like Council Tax, rent and energy bills if you’re in arrears on these, as well as debts like credit cards or loans. If you haven’t got everything, don’t worry - bring as much as you can find.
