A joint venture between Northumberland Libraries and Northumberland Communities Together, the new Bedlington Library and Community Hub will complement existing community projects to combine traditional library services, while enhancing the existing activity programmes.

Much of the work to prepare the space, including painting the library’s interior, was completed by the apprentices themselves with support from the Housing and Local Services team, as well as volunteers from across the library service, Northumberland Communities Together and local youth charity, Leading Link.

“Through the creation of safe spaces like the new Library and Community Hub at Bedlington, we hope to continue offering these services in a sustainable way and make them more widely accessible to all residents across Northumberland to help people to get back on their feet at their own pace.”

6 | ABC MAGAZINES LOCAL NEWS

To celebrate the culmination of the work, staff hosted a special event where school children from four local primary schools were invited to take part in a book signing with celebrated children’s book illustrator, Liz Million.

Councillor Wendy Pattison, Cabinet Member for Adult Wellbeing at Northumberland County Council, added: “The services provided by Northumberland Communities Together during the height of the pandemic were a lifeline to many individuals living in our communities and although we are now more than two years on, coronavirus is still impacting on many people’s day-to-day lives.

New Library and Community Hub Launches in Bedlington

“The coronavirus pandemic has impacted on everyone’s lives in different ways. People have lost their jobs, lost their confidence and in some areas, lost their sense of community through months of having to stay apart. The launch of a new community hub like this, which brings together the magic of the library with a comprehensive support service has the potential to help thousands of residents of all ages to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the past two years and we’re really excited for the public to see it.”

Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Healthy Lives at Northumberland County Council, commented: “We’re absolutely delighted with the transformation of Bedlington Library into the new collaborative Library and Community Hub.

The Bedlington Library and Community Hub is open daily to all members of the public. For full opening hours and contact information, please visit https://northumberland.spydus.co.uk

Liz Million with local children at the new Bedlington Library and Hub

The five-month-long project, which was originally proposed by Northumberland County Council’s team of apprentices during National Apprenticeship Week, has seen a complete interior refurbishment of the library space on Glebe Road, which has been serving the community in Bedlington since the 1970s.

The finished Library and Community Hub features all the same great library amenities as before, with the addition of more communal seating areas, craft and activity tables and a new, custom-built children’s library area to help make the space somewhere that members of the community of all ages can enjoy.

Over 100 pupils from St Bede’s, Stead Lane, Whitley Memorial and Bedlington West End Primary Schools came along to the event where they each received a free signed book, a goody bag and learned more about the new and improved service and the upcoming Summer Reading Challenge.

There is much written about how football evolved in mining communities, not just in the North East, but all across the country mining communities produced some enviable talent in football. As a proud ex-mining town, there are links to the mining heritage of Ashington in people, places, words, and structures. Add to that, a town that boasts four ‘footballers of the year’, and you have an exciting heritage project in the making.

Chair of Ashington Town Council, Cllr Mark Purvis said,“The people of Ashington are rightly proud of their footballing heroes and, as a council, we want to develop projects that local people value. Also, we want to encourage investment, and share our stories with visitors. I never get tired of football stories, and hope these will inspire our youngsters, not only to kick a football, but to be their absolute best.”

The project received support from Ashington Town Council, who commissioned well respected sculptor Douglas Jennings to create a life-size bronze cast statue of Jack ‘The Elder’, to stand proudly in Hirst Park, overlooking the fields where Jack first kicked a football.

Jackie Milburn, Jimmy Adamson, Bobby Charlton, and Jack Charlton will all feature in ‘Ashington’s Footballing Heritage’, including special coverage of the 1966 World Cup. Using interpretation panels, the aim is to educate, motivate, and inspire people by bringing to life the story of these four players in words and pictures, with a focus on their early roots and career triumphs.LocalLandscape

A Tribute to 'Wor' Jackie - And A Football Hall Of Fame!

As the owners of the park, Northumberland County Council say they welcome the new features and the recognition of these achievements as part of Ashington’s heritage. The Council expects to complete the project in October, and Jack’s widow Pat is looking forward to seeing the finished statue, and to attending the unveiling.

In July 2020, following the death of Jack Charlton, Cllr Liam Lavery acted on the outpouring of grief, both locally and further afield, with the idea of a fitting tribute: a statue in his hometown of Ashington. Cllr Lavery, who kicked off a Go Fund Me page said, “Jack Charlton brought joy to millions of people across Britain and Ireland through football, but his influence transcended the sport. In life, he was a towering monument to the values that bind our communities – and his passing deserves that legacy to be carried on for future generations.”

Hirst Park was a special place for the Charlton Brothers. Jack spoke about Hirst Park in 2016, after it was named as one of 12 parks across the country to receive a share of £32 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund. At that time Jack said, “The park was a precious place where me and Bobby learned our craft, training and playing for fun, before going on to join Leeds and Manchester United and then playing in the World Cup-winning England side in 1966. Hirst Park made it all possible for us and we would play all day if we could, and we often did.”

Fitting

As well as the statue, local football and heritage enthusiast Barry Mead has worked closely with Ashington Town Council to bring forward the story of Ashington’s football hall of fame.

Architect, Nick Wright of PlaceOnEarth Ltd is working alongside Structural Engineers Jasper Kerr and Classic Masonry based in North Shields to create a design that respects the separate elements of the project but brings these carefully together in a unique small garden space that will add to the already diverse range of experiences in HirstThePark.hope is that these projects will harness the power and popularity of football as a force for good, developing partnerships with people and organisations across the region to improve people’s lives and support their communities.

The roof of the centre will be fitted with PV solar panels to capture energy from the sun. The clean electricity generated will be used to help run the leisure centre’s fans, pumps, lighting and new heat pumps and will dramatically reduce the amount of electricity being drawn from the grid.

Once complete, the new county council funded leisure centre will be home to a six-lane swimming pool with spectator gallery, a learner pool, spa facilities, a four-court sports hall, a new 100 station gym, a dedicated spinning studio, two fitness studios, a cafe area and soft play.

It will also incorporate a new community services hub which will see the town’s library move back to its former home on Gas House Lane, a customer service centre and a new adult learning facility with classrooms for STEM learning and catering.

The ventilation systems at the leisure centre will also use the latest ‘smart’ technology to increase control and efficiency through the building management system.

10 | ABC MAGAZINES Work to build a new £21m state-of-theart leisure centre and community hub in Morpeth is still on track for a public opening in early 2023.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for healthy lives said: “Sports centres incorporate an extensive array of energy intensive facilities including electrical fitness equipment and swimming pools. In addition, there are the day-to-day lighting, heating and ventilation demands of the property, combined with long opening hours. Consequently, the energy consumption and costs of sports and leisure centres can be considerable.

“It’s fantastic to see the great progress that has been made over recent months. It really is going to be a fabulous centre, offering a wide range of first-class sport, recreation and wellbeing opportunities for Morpeth and the surrounding communities.”

High efficiency building materials include high density insulated cladding, high energy-efficient glazing with thermal screening, air source heat pumps which use outside heat to help power the buildings, LED lighting throughout, and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. These will all help to reduce the carbon footprint of the new centre and contribute to the council’s vision of a net zero-carbon economy.

“Now more than ever we need to increase energy efficiency and the measures we are putting in place during the construction of this new centre will help to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions and are another step towards the council’s ambitious plans to be carbon net zero by 2030.”

Contractors Willmott Dixon are in week 72 of a 94-week programme of work on the centre which will incorporate a number of energy saving and energy generating technologies to drive down running costs and the environmental impact.

“Because it is an old building it can’t offer the easy access many users, for example those with prams or pushchairs and elderly people, will need. This solution offers the best of both worlds keeping the Town Hall alive and in use while the County Hall location for the Register Office provides the best possible service to our residents.”

Cllr Colin Horncastle, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Morpeth Town Hall dates back to 1714 and although it is great place for a wedding, with a beautiful ballroom and fantastic amenities it is no longer the best place for the register office.

BOOKS

A new children’s book set in Northumberland with illustrated stories of fairies, monsters and magical beasts is available to buy now.

As well as Once Upon A Time in Northumberland, Lorna has written three local history books, and three historical romances: The Jacobites’s Daughter, The Rebel and the Redcoat and The Jacobite Affair. Her poetry has been published in several anthologies. She is also a playwright and has co-written two audio plays with, Lily Moon, Rule 55 and 100 Not Out broadcast on Hive Radio. Lorna’s, commemorative play, The Tenth Bord was performed at St. Hilda’s Pithead, South Shields. In 2008, she won the North Tyneside Short Story Competition with Spirit of the Age and her novel, Toby’s Secret was longlisted in the Times/ Chicken House Children’s Competition. Lorna’s friend and multi-talented amateur artist, Delphine Blenkinsop, who lives in Northumberland, volunteered to create over 16 brilliant illustrations based on the book’s characters. Lorna and Delphine are members of The Hive Radio Storytellers who recorded several of the characters’ voices. These could be accessed by using QR codes on Enchanted Cramlington’s successful Woodland Audio Trail at Northumberlandia during Jubilee Week. The trail was described by one member of the public as: “an amazing, magical adventure!” New trails will open in early summer and late autumn. Once upon A Time in Northumberland is on sale for £7.99 at www.summerhillbooks.co.uk and local shops.

AUTHOR: Lorna Windham

14 | ABC MAGAZINES

The book starts with the Lady of the North’s Tale where we learn about her childhood, the princes who wished to marry her and why her outline, the world’s biggest Earth art, can be seen at Northumberlandia’s country park. Other magical stories tell of Queen Mab’s thousandth birthday party and the arrival of an unexpected guest, one of King Roarie the Reiver’s crimes and his comeuppance, Cutty Soames, who regrets hiring troublesome troll, Honeydew Krump; Strawberry Parkin, a hapless apprentice tooth fairy in need of the queen’s help, Danny the Deurgar, and his answer to bullies and, Reggie Rabbit, who discovers playing games on his iPad will not teach him everything he needs to know.

Once Upon A Time in Northumberland is a collection of humorous short stories inspired by traditional, Northumberland folk tales such as Queen Mab’s Rothley Mill and Dancing Round the Hurl Stone as well as classic fairy tales such as The Little Match Girl, The Tin Soldier and The Princess and the Pea. Award winning writer Lorna Windham said, “I wanted to create contemporary stories which would stand the test of time and featured Northumberlandia, the River Blyth and the Simonside Hills, landmarks that many children in the North East will recognise. I loved creating the quirky characters and giving each a predicament to solve, particularly when this touched on modern concerns about the environment and wildlife.”

Ashington Author, Lorna Windham Publishes Magical Book of Children’s Short Stories

In Once Upon A Time in Northumberland, Queen Mab, struggles to maintain harmony between the magical creatures who live in Enchanted Wood. Lorna said: “This is a kingdom where fairies fly, monsters stalk and wordragons roar. We discover unsettled honeybees, how, Groach, the queen’s half-sister, thinks her beauty is more important than kindness and how two red squirrels, Fluffcoat, and Brighteyes, are concerned about the dangers some humans cause.”

Why not decide to try community singing in the company of other men who have enjoyed it for years?

The choir has an extensive music library and is able to include a wide variety of songs in whatever is the current repertoire. The Musical Director likes a good performance, but recognises the mix of experience among the members, and ensures that there is a balance of pieces suitable for the choir. Two major concerts, one at Christmas and the other in early Summer, are the Show Times, when we have a guest artist and hopefully boost our funds. Other concerts during the year are for pure entertainment, for voluntary and charitable organisations who are raising their own funds or as part of a bigger event such as the Morpeth Northumberland Gathering.

Drop in to our rehearsal for a coffee and chat about the choir. No audition or requirement to read music. Enjoy the social aspect of rehearsal and performances.

As the evenings start to draw in, and it’s no longer the time to be in the garden, then gentlemen, it’s the perfect time to start, or renew, an interest or hobby.

Different types of teeth.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

In a study across 19 countries, researchers found an average of 19% of the population wear some form of denture. That’s nearly one in five. I am sure therefore, we all must have a family member or friend who wears a denture and we don’t even realise! What is a denture?

Well, you would not believe how many different teeth we have to choose from; with different shapes, sizes, colour and quality, we are able to closely match to your natural teeth so that your appearance hardly changes, or may even be better.

Different denture materials

How do I know which type of denture I need?

Last time we discussed implants to replace missing teeth and, in this article, I am going to explore the option of having a denture.

Some patients will find their acrylic dentures repeatedly fracture so a metal one would be better as the metal component will not break.

By Joanne Duggan, Principal Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice

The type of material used in making your denture depends on various factors.

ABC MAGAZINES | 23

For example how many remaining teeth you have, whether your dentures frequently break, or if you have any allergies to any of the materials

How soon can I have a denture after my teeth are taken out? Usually dentures can be fitted straight after your teeth have been removed. These are called ‘immediate dentures’. You will need to visit the dental team beforehand for them to take measurements and impressions of your mouth. With immediate dentures you don’t have to be without teeth while your gums are healing. However, bone and gums can shrink over time, especially during the first six months after your teeth have been taken out. If your gums shrink, your immediate dentures may need relining, adjusting or even replacing. Your dental team will be able to talk to you about this. Sometimes your dental team may advise you to wait until your gums are healed before having your dentures, as this can sometimes mean a better fit. Healing may take several months.

Well, this really depends on many factors, from the shape of your mouth, to the position and health of any remaining natural teeth, to the appearance of the denture (for example ideally you do not want to see any metal showing when you smile), to the strength of the denture.

Dentures; Another Optionfor Missing Teeth

Dentures are made of either acrylic, (plastic), cobalt chrome metal or valplast. An acrylic (plastic) denture usually solely rests on the gum of your mouth and can be used to make both partial and full dentures. Cobalt chrome can be used to make a full denture to give it strength, or for a partial denture where it is supported and retained by some of your natural teeth. Valplast is a nylon based flexible denture, used for small partial dentures.

A denture is a removable appliance, usually made from acrylic, or a combination of acrylic with metal, that is worn snugly in your mouth to restore the spaces left by missing teeth and will restore your smile, give you confidence and improve your ability to eat and chew. They can replace just one tooth, to all of your teeth. If you have lost all of your upper or lower natural teeth then you would need a full denture, (also known as a complete denture). If your denture replaces some but not all of your teeth, then this type of denture is called a partial denture. A complete or full denture replaces your natural teeth and gives support to your cheeks and lips. Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person look older and they will find it harder to eat and speak properly.

In the surgery: The CDT/dentist will use the special tray custom made to fit you to take another impression. The material may be slightly different;

24 | ABC MAGAZINES

At the lab: From this impression the CDT/technician will make a model which gives them all the information needed to start the process of planning and making a denture. Initially the tray used to take the impression is just a standard size and may not be the best fit for you. A custom made tray, called a special tray, will be made on this initial model so it is the best fit for the shape of your mouth and teeth. If the tray is a good fit, then the impression of your mouth will be more accurate and this in turn will lead to a better fitting denture.

The shape of your mouth will determine what type of denture is suitable. A denture will be made to fit your mouth, but this can vary widely between people and affect how stable and secure your denture will be. In particular if you have no teeth, then the ridge and palate shape can have large implications on the retention and stability of your denture. For example a flabby ridge is soft and moveable and is usually caused when you have worn a full upper denture against lower natural teeth for a long time, but this means there is no solid foundation to support your denture and therefore there is a greater chance your denture will move. The shape of your palate is also important; for example if you have a highly vaulted palate, then the denture will be more stable and less likely to move than if your palate is flat.

Most people find a complete lower denture more problematic as the shape of gums tend to deteriorate quicker than the upper.

Second visit; secondary impressions

Muscle position is another factor for a successful denture. The Dentist/ CDT will use the impression stage to record your facial/tongue muscles. This enables them to place the denture in the correct position.

Primary Impressions will be taken to give an outline of the overall shape and muscle position in your mouth.

What is involved in making a denture? Once you have decided to go ahead with a denture, you will need to organise your appointments; they tend to be roughly a week apart to allow time for each stage of the denture to be made. The dentist will also need to organise which dental laboratory and technician they are going to instruct and liaise with to make your denture. An alternative option is for the denture to be made with a Clinical Dental Technician (CDT.) The role of a CDT sits somewhere between that of a dentist, who would normally take your impressions and the other treatment needed to made a denture in the dental surgery, to that of the Dental Technician who would receive the impression from the dentist in the laboratory, and actually make the dentures. A CDT therefore is able to combine both the work in the dental surgery and also hand make a bespoke denture for you from start to finish. At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are very fortunate to have Clare Rankin, our CDT, who has over 23 years experience making dentures and was also mentored by our previous CDT Alan Forrest. Whoever makes your denture, there is an incredible amount of skill and craftsmanship involved. I want to shed some light on the amazing and sometimes unrecognised work that goes on in the dental laboratories in making your denture.

First visit/examination

In the surgery: Your dentist or CDT will perform an examination of your mouth including an oral cancer screen. If you have no teeth at all and wish to have complete upper or lower dentures, then you can see a CDT without seeing a dentist first. However, if you have any natural teeth remaining, then you must be seen by a dentist first to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy before seeing a CDT. The last thing you need is to have a beautiful private denture made and then treatment on your natural teeth afterwards which can alter the fit or aesthetics of your new denture.

At the lab: The technician/CDT will cast the moulds and make a registration block. This is used to record your jaw relationship and tooth position, all of which is important for your new dentures.

If you are considering a denture, it is really important you visit your dentist for your dental health check to ensure your gums and teeth are healthy first. Your professional dental team will then advise you on what treatment options are available to you and the most appropriate to meet your individual need.

At the lab: The technician/CDT will mount the registration on an articulator, which replicates your jaw and its movements, and make a denture out if wax with the teeth in the correct position.

Fourth visit; try in In the surgery: At this stage the wax try-in denture becomes a collaboration between you and the clinician. The dentist/CDT will need to ensure your bite is correct, but you will be involved in discussing the appearance. Together we need to ensure we achieve a denture you want to wear but will also provide good function. This may take more than one visit to achieve and we will not progress to the next stage until you are 100% happy with everything. We advise that you bring someone with you, whom you are comfortable with, to provide a second opinion. It is difficult to say “yes” to something when only having a short time to inspect them, especially when you could potentially be wearing them for the next 5-10 years. Anything you do not like or would like to alter should be raised at this stage. Whilst it is in wax, it CAN be changed. Don’t be afraid to speak up; we wouldn’t expect you to wear a dress or suit we picked out for you if you didn’t like it, so why should your dentures be any different?

Third visit; bite and choosing the colour and shape of your teeth In the surgery: Your dentist/CDT will take measurements of your current dentures and your natural tooth position as a guide to determine the shape and size of your new dentures. At this stage the clinician will need your input of what you like/don’t like about your current dentures, so we can choose the most aesthetically pleasing shaped teeth for you. We will also want your input into the shade/colour of the teeth.

Review appointment

We always book a review appointment after fitting all dentures. The majority of people will get soreness after having their dentures fitted. Imagine going for a 12 mile hike in a new pair of shoes, it is likely you will get blisters. Your dentures may need adjusted at this stage. It again may take more than one visit to completely eradicate the soreness. A warm salty rinse is recommended when you have ulceration to help the healing process and may take up to 3-4 days to clear after adjustments. If it doesn’t improve after this time, contact us for a second review appointment.

If you like to arrange an appointment or would like more information about our CDT, then give the practice a call: 01670 828402

At the lab: The try-in denture goes through a curing process from wax into your chosen material (such as acrylic) to make the finished denture.

Fifth visit; fit In the surgery: Your dentist/CDT will fit your dentures and they may need minor adjustments. The fit, stability, occlusion (your bite) and speech will all be checked before you leave. If you are having partials fitted, we will also check you are able to remove and place the dentures correctly. We will also instruct you on how to look after and clean your new dentures.

With most of us facing rising energy bills, why not reduce these costs and save money instantly with a Thermos Roof insulation system in your conservatory. Here they explain more.

We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape, transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein the external weather conditions do not dictate its use; it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a five-year warranty. We guarantee that you will be amazed by both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your newWeroof.offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs.

Conservatories are a great space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden. They are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually shortlived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons: to increase its insulating performance and enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in winter, heat is sucked out of your room and into the conservatory as soon as you open the door. During the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof, we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use, into a space you can enjoy all year round as the temperature is comfortable and constant. You will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With noWemess!retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight; therefore, no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home.

Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, microorganisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week (9th-14th August) is encouraging gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotment. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil. They are nature’s vital helpers. To take part in the survey visit allotments-week/www.nsalg.org.uk/news-events-campaigns/national-Manyallotmentgardenerswilltellyouthataspell

During World War II, and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket.

on the plot nurturing plants and contemplating nature makes them feel calmer and more hopeful and there have been recent studies that have measured this benefit.Thephysical benefits of regular spells of gardening help plot-holders to keep fit even if they have sedentary jobs, the physical exercise also contributes to their mental well-being. Gardening can also help to maintain good gait and balance in older gardeners and help with cognitive decline. If managed properly, an allotment can produce enough food to supplement a family’s weekly shop, with fresh fruit and vegetables over the year. Allotment gardeners can choose to garden organically and avoid ingesting chemicals that are likely to be present on shop bought fruit and vegetables.

Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own.

In a survey of National Allotment Society members nearly every person said their love of allotment gardening comes from the fresh air, home grown produce, healthy lifestyle and like-minded people this activity offers.

But, with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge. And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of most consumers.

To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council (see the websites listed below). Price and availability vary and in some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites.

Useful Websites

Graham has put all his years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning his exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and he only selects the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to him, or he has previously used them before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on Graham’s knowledge, as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow everyone to make full use of the facilities. Guaranteed free time, as well as entertainment, are also key factors that he takes into account to try and make a tour as pleasurable an experience as possible.

Over the years, on his numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, Graham built up a fantastic relationship with many of his passengers, and he is lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated Graham’s vast experience and knowledge of the places he visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of his friends that the question was asked about starting his own company and running his own holidays.

ORPHANS OF THE STORM by Celia Imrie Investigator Lacy Stoltz is tired of her work and ready for a change. Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims.

It’s Lexi Lowe’s long-awaited hen do and she is jetting off with her five friends to the Greek Island Aegos for four nights of sun, sand, sea, food and wine before she says I do to the love of her life Ed. She is under strict instructions not to contact him throughout the trip but with lots of differing personalities at play, she feels a sense of unease from the very off - not the ideal start!

Never is more than just a thriller, it touches on a scenario that is close to the bone and one that we all hope never comes true.

A complex web ensues as a US army drone is stolen and what starts as a terrible mistake, snowballs into a cataclysmic event. Meanwhile, the country of Chad is at the heart of a political situation involving two intelligence agents who are seeking to rid the region of a ruthless terrorist group and China is keeping its eye on what has been going on, including a senior government official who hopes to climb the ranks of the Communist Party.

Miriam knows that just because Laura is witnessed leaving the scene of a horrific murder with blood on her clothes, that doesn’t mean she’s a killer. Bitter experience has taught her how easy it is to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The group consists of 6 women all with a secret they have kept locked away. The scene is set for four days of fun in the sun but each of the women has their own agenda and reason for being there. They are all harbouring dark secrets and as the booze-fuelled nights begin, they begin to rise to the surface.

Someone doesn’t want this wedding to go ahead and someone won’t leave this island alive but who? Lucy Clarke’s, One of the Girls will keep you guessing until the very end.

As China is left feeling vulnerable by the situation in Chad retaliation talks against America begins with North Korea which is more than happy to be part of the action. A SLOW BURNING FIRE by Paula Hawkins

ONE OF THE GIRLS by Lucy Clarke

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law. He is a judge, in Florida - under Lacy’s jurisdiction. He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?

Laura has spent most of her life being judged. She’s seen as hot-tempered, troubled, a loner. Some even call her dangerous.
