The North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce has joined forces with the Port of Tyne to make a visitor guide to North Shields aimed at ships crews visiting the Port of Tyne. The guide provides information to the crews of the growing number of cruise and other ships visiting the Port with 52 cruise calls expected this year, each with an average of 800 crew on board. Both the Chamber and Port hope the guide will encourage more ships’ crews to visit different parts of North Shields, giving a boost to the local economy. Miles Walton, Chair of the Chamber, said: “This is a way of boosting not only the welfare of the crews, but also the shops, cafes, restaurants and other service providers who are spread across North Shields. “This initiative is a perfect example of what the Chamber tries to do – to provide a benefit to its members and also to North Shields as a whole.” Their guide features a map of North Shields, details of areas including the Fish Quay, town centre, Royal Quays

ECONOMY BOOST: The map and guide will hopfully encourage ships’ crew to visit the businesses of North Shields

and Tynemouth, as well as local transport links. With each ship docked for around 10-12 hours, crew who have the opportunity to visit the local area will be able to use the guide to help them make the most of their free time. Port of Tyne Director of Health & Safety, Environment and Marine Harbour Master Steven Clapperton, said: “This is an opportunity for us to work together with the Chamber to improve the offering we have for the crews of visiting vessels.

“It also means we can hopefully help to increase trade for local businesses as there are so many crew members coming into port who want to get out to explore the local area. “As a former Merchant Navy officer this is something close to my heart – and a positive opportunity to help improve the welfare of seafarers.”

CAREERS TALKS TO LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Over the last few years, the North Shields Chamber of Trade has arranged careers days for local primary schools. This year, it is the turn of Percy Main Primary. On the 14th of June, over 20 member businesses will spent the whole day at the school, telling the children, from Reception to Year 6, about the jobs they do, the other people they come across in business and the sort of qualifications needed. Headteacher Rachel Butler commented: “We are delighted that all these local firms have taken time out of their busy days to expand the pupils’ awareness of the world of business – we are all looking forward to the day”.

TWIN TOWN UPDATE

North Shields continues to work with Merthyr Tydfil as a part of the Carnegie UK Trust Twin Town Project on a range of projects including the use of social media, retail offering, business support and health all designed to help make North Shields an attractive place for business, residents and visitors. In April the Carnegie UK Trust also hosted a Parliamentary reception at the National Assembly for Wales designed to engage Welsh Assembly Members, Welsh Government representatives, and key stakeholders on the importance of towns in public policy in Wales with North Shields invited to attend as an example of how a strong partnership between business, voluntary groups, education and the local authority works for the benefit of the whole community. The Chamber are also delighted to announce that the final celebration event for the Twin Town Project which involves towns from across the U.K will be held in North Shields in the autumn with the event being held over two days and attended by a number of towns and policy makers from across the UK. Commentating on the event, Chamber Chair Miles Walton said ‘we are delighted that Carnegie have chosen North Shields to hold the final Twin Towns event as it will give us the opportunity to showcase to a wide and influential audience what makes North Shields so special’.

BEAUTY REVIEW

THE ANTI-WRINKLE FACIAL WITH PROVEN RESULTS DAWN WILSON TRIES OUT THE ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN FACIAL AT KIRSHA KNOWLES HAIR & BEAUTY

N

orth Tyneside salon Kirsha Knowles Hair and Beauty have recently added the prestigious Elemis brand to their range of treatments and products available.

Elemis is the number one luxury British Skincare brand, who combine ingredients sourced from nature to produce scientifically proven skincare. I was invited to the salon to try out their Elemis ProCollagen Facial, an exceptional anti-wrinkle facial which has been independently tested and clinically proven, with phenomenal results so, despite living in denial of the ageing process, I was excited to try it out! You can't help but instantly relax the moment you step into the treatment room at Kirsha Knowles Salon. The dim lighting and cosy treatment bed let you immediately unwind and settle. Therapist Lizzie explained to me that this premium treatment reduces the number of wrinkles and improves skin firmness. Lifting massage techniques are combined with professional strength products for maximum effect. I was surprised (and pleased!) that this facial includes lots of different stages and treatments and it was a truly relaxing experience from start to finish so much so, I didn't want it to end! The facial begins with all traces of make-up and oils being removed from my face with Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (which incidentally smells amazing!). Followed by toning and exfoliating with Elemis Gentle Rose Exfoliator. A sequence of treatments follow including a Papaya Enzyme Peel which exfoliates using fruit enzymes to leave skin soft, revitalised and radiant. I could feel the slightest of tingles to let me know this was definitely working! 10

A cooling, thick face mask is applied and, while it’s working its magic, I'm given a soothing neck and shoulder massage with a fabulous frangipani oil (which also smell amazing!). Elemis’ star product Pro-Collagen Marine Oil is worked into my skin to visibly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and revitalise my skin. Finally my skin is treated to a dose of Pro-Collagen Super Serum Elixir anti-wrinle concentrate and ProCollagen Marine Cream. (Elemis sells one Pro-Collagen Marine Cream every minute around the world and it has won numerous awards – which speaks for itself!)

This premium treatment is clinically proven to reduce the number of wrinkles and improve skin firmness

It's highly recommended that you don't wash your face or put on any makeup after having the treatment so you can let all of the products sink in for maximum effect! My skin looked firmer, refreshed, glowy and more youthful and I woke up the following day with what felt like 'new skin'! I was really impressed with the results and would recommend the Elemis Pro-Collagen Age-Defy if you're looking for an effective facial with noticeable results. WHAT’S ON

FULL LINE UP ANNOUNCED FOR MOUTH OF THE TYNE FESTIVAL Mouth of the Tyne Festival returns this summer with a packed programme of live music concerts, world-class street theatre and special one-off performances

T

aking place from July 5 to July 8, the starstudded line-up at Tynemouth Priory and Castle includes Paloma Faith, James Arthur, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott. Queen of British soul, Beverley Knight is back and will be headlining the festival’s Sunday family day on July 8.

And the full-line up for the Platinum-selling singer’s Sunday show has now been confirmed – it includes MF Robots, a new group from the founder of The Brand New Heavies; Big Red and the Grinners who give a fun new take on classics like Cameo’s Word Up; Georgie, a newly signed artist to Columbia Records; and Hetton-le-Hole’s pit-pop outfit Dennis. The Sunday show also offers a chance for one of North Tyneside’s best young bands or musicians to perform alongside established international artists. A week earlier Soundfest, a competition to win a place to perform on the festival’s main stage, takes place and a dozen acts will battle it out for the opportunity. North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, CBE, said: “Mouth of the Tyne Festival is hugely popular and I know many people are looking forward to the different events. With its mix of brilliant live music concerts, international street entertainment, jazz music and, of course, the wonderful parade featuring local schoolchildren, there is lots happening. The festival attracts thousands of people and provides a big boost to the local economy – supporting our commitment to making North Tyneside a great and prosperous place to live, work and visit.” 14

Tickets for Paloma Faith and Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott are now sold out, but some tickets are available for James Arthur, performing on Friday 6 July, and Beverley Knight who takes to the stage on Sunday 8 July. Elsewhere in the borough, Playhouse Whitley Bay will see concerts from Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul on Monday 2 July, This Is the Kit on Thursday 5 July, Collabro on Friday 6 July and Suzanne Vega on Friday 22 July. Tynemouth Surf Café will host a BBC Introducing night on Sunday 8 July featuring local artists YUMA, Eve Simpson, Callum Pitt and FEVA. The popular jazz stage will once again be outside of the Gibraltar Rock and free street entertainment featuring some weird and wonderful acts will take place on Front Street. This year’s ‘BIG’ pageant in Tynemouth will include hundreds of young people embracing a colourful and diverse parade with schools, bands, local dance and community groups all taking part in the procession. Tynemouth Station’s packed programme will run alongside the bustling weekend markets and will feature live music, activities for under-fives and special one-off performances. The festival is supported by Engie, Port of Tyne and Kier and has hosted a range of artists including Paul Weller, Elbow, James Bay, The Script, James Morrison and Bryan Ferry. Now in its 14th year, the event has grown into one of the region’s favourite summer festivals, attracting around 100,000 people from the local area and beyond. For more information or tickets visit www. mouthofthetynefestival.com or follow the official Facebook page.

NEW RESTAURANT UNVEILED AT PLANTSPLUS GARDEN CENTRE NEW RESTAURANT OPENS AFTER HUGE TRANSFORMATION

P

lantsplus Garden Centre has officially welcomed the opening of its new restaurant this May. The Newcastle branch of Berwick Garden Centre Ltd, near Ponteland, has created around 15 new jobs in the area. Having undergone a huge transformation across the store for the past year, the restaurant will have its doors open to customers 7 days a week, throughout the year. Serving breakfast, lunches, light bites, coffee and cake, its commitment is to serve fresh, homemade food with locally sourced produce wherever possible. Vegetarian, vegan and glutenfree options means there is something for everyone to enjoy. The outdoor seating area will also allow for dog owners to experience the restaurant looking out towards the plant department. Seating 250 people, Plantsplus is hoping to emulate the success of both Berwick and Dunbar Garden Centre restaurants, with Dunbar holding a Taste Our Best award from Visit Scotland – awardees must keep food miles to a

minimum; show information about where your food has come from; friendly staff who know about the origins of the food on your plate; keeping the menu options fresh and seasonal. A bright and sunny area tucked around the corner of the restaurant will be kept for the use of parties, visiting groups, and private functions. If you would like to book this area, please contact the centre on the details at the bottom of the page. The addition of the restaurant will bring Plantsplus up to speed with customer expectation of garden centres as a day-out shopping experience. The store has increased its retail offerings to include books, gifts, cards and pet supplies and is also continuing with the upgrading of its nursery facilities. Work is continuing around the store with as little disruption to customers as possible, with the carpark to be resurfaced and the front entrance to be renovated.

The addition of the restaurant makes Plantsplus a day-out shopping experience

Customers were directed through the nursery last month whilst builders were addressing the new entrance, and with it being the height of growing season it was a fantastic time to really see into the heart of the nursery and the garden centre’s core activity. To celebrate its opening, the centre has begun including a free pot of tea or filter coffee voucher for every Reward Card customer with their Reward Card points in the post every 2 months. Pick up an application form in store or on their website its free to join and you’ll be rewarded with every purchase! Why not book in for Afternoon Tea, MondayFriday between 12-4pm? Spring INTO

SUMMER

WITH BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL

A

s the days grow longer and warmer and we dare to throw open the windows and doors to welcome in the fresh air, many people’s thoughts will turn to spring cleaning.

Helen Ross and her Bright & Beautiful team keep the homes of North Tyneside clean and sparkling all year round but did you know that cleaning our houses at this time of year has a rich and varied history? The Chinese have an ancient tradition of cleaning their homes ahead of the new year, which occurs just shortly after the Western new year. They sweep the floors to get rid of any bad luck or misfortune that may have accumulated during the previous year. As well as having its origins in history, spring cleaning also has a lot to do with biology. In the winter, the shorter days mean we are exposed to less sunlight and this reduced exposure to light produces melatonin in the body, the hormone that produces sleepiness. When the days start getting longer and

At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend.

lighter we produce less melatonin and feel more energetic. Helen, who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside, looks after homes across the area, delivering the highest standards of cleaning, tidying and laundry. Helen says: “At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time and make the most of the warmer weather – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend. Coming home to a clean and fresh smelling home, with the washing done and put away by our professional trained housekeepers, well it’s enough to put a spring into anyone’s step!”

‘STRIKING’ NEW EXHIBITIONS AT SEGEDUNUM ROMAN FORT SEGEDUNUM HAS LONG HAD A REPUTATION FOR PRESENTING TOP-CLASS EXHIBITIONS HERE IN WALLSEND AND THE 2018 PROGRAMME PROMISES TO UPHOLD THAT STATUS.

T

he current exhibition Striking the Emperor showcases Roman coins found on the site, but also provides an experience that brings visitors face to face with a real rogues’ gallery of emperors. Roman soldiers were

well-paid and forts were a hive of commercial activity, with coins exchanged for goods and services in the surrounding settlement, and soldiers pay and savings kept locked and guarded in the underground strong room of the Headquarters Building of the fort. Of course, as today, some of those coins got dropped or discarded and lost, only to be found by archaeologists centuries later. The exhibition uses large beautifully-lit images of the coins so that their detail can be clearly seen. Coins were a key medium for circulating the emperor’s public image and associated propaganda around the ancient world, and they present a fascinating story. Striking the Emperor runs until 13 May.

Coins were a key medium for circulating the emperor’s public image and they present a fascinating story.

22

The main summer exhibition will be Saving Face, presenting a glorious array of cheek pieces from Roman helmets. All lent by a private collector, and not seen publically together before, this is a unique and exciting opportunity. The displays will explore the evolution and range of styles, designs and symbolism, of this crucial functional element of the iconic Roman helmet. Geoff Woodward, Museum Manager said, ‘With many of the cheek pieces belonging to cavalry helmets it marks an excellent follow-up to last years’ hugely successful Hadrian’s Cavalry exhibition. Together with the wider museum offer it should attract a large audience to the World Heritage Site this year.’ Saving Face runs from 26 May to 21 September. NORTH EAST’S LARGEST BUILDING SOCIETY OFFERS DEMENTIA FRIENDS INFORMATION SESSIONS

T

he North East’s largest building society is offering Dementia Friends Information Sessions to the public after an internal awareness session proved very popular.

Departments across Newcastle Building Society’s head offices have taken part in the Dementia Friends Sessions, as well as every branch in the 27 strong network. Each branch now includes at least one Dementia Friend. Sheila Hodgson, branch support lead at Newcastle Building Society has delivered around 55 sessions and trained over 750 new dementia friends. Sheila said: “As a Dementia Friends Champion, I regularly lead these sessions for the Society’s staff, and now we’re offering them to our customers and the general public. The sessions are interactive, easy to follow and have great stories to explain dementia and help people understand it. “Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest initiative to help change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.” Newcastle Building Society recently hosted a session 28

in their Gosforth branch. A number of businesses on the high street attended, including staff from Barclays, Santander, Nationwide Building Society and Dawson & Sanderson. The feedback was very positive with attendees saying it was really thought provoking and the imagery used to describe the impact on dementia sufferers and their families worked really well. Joe Kirwin, dementia friends officer at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “There are 35,000 people living with dementia in the North East, so to see Newcastle Building Society taking action through rolling out Dementia Friends sessions to their colleagues and the general public is really encouraging. “By committing to making all their colleagues Dementia Friends they will provide reassurance to those living with dementia that they can count on a safe and comfortable experience when visiting Newcastle Building Society” The Society is hosting a number of sessions in a variety of places within the community, from Stokesley to North Shields. If you’re interested in attending any of the sessions, you can find out how to book your place at any of our sessions on Newcastle Building Society’s website www.newcastle.co.uk

CHALLENGE YOUNG VOLUNTEERS TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY GROUP OR ORGANISATION

A

s part of the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme for 15-17 year olds, North Tyneside VODA is looking for community groups and organisations that could use the help of a team of volunteers for a short-term project.

NCS is an exciting four-week volunteering programme for young people aged between 15 and 17. As well as taking part in an away-from-home residential, and developing teamwork, communication and a range of other skills, the volunteers are also tasked with carrying out a social action project for the benefit of their local community. This involves working as a team to find solutions to problems faced by community groups and voluntary organisations. Robin Fry, VODA’s Chief Executive, explains more: “Social action basically means people doing something practical to improve a problem or challenge faced by the community. This can be anything from sprucing up a run-down room in a community centre to creating a communal garden in a neglected outdoor space. This summer, we will have 17 teams of young people ready and willing to get involved in challenges that they can carry out together in the time they have. We’d love to hear from any groups or organisations that have a problem that needs addressing, or for whom this type of short-term but 36

intensive volunteering could really help.” VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency) has been delivering the National Citizen Service programme for seven years, involving over 100 young people in social action in North Tyneside. Previous years have seen the young people design and develop a range of social action projects around issues they care about such as homelessness and internet safety. This year, the challenge is going to be a little bit different. “We want to see how the young people can use their skills to come up with solutions to existing problems, how they can work together and with the people in their local community to make a real and lasting difference. We also want to offer

the participants a chance to keep volunteering when they graduate from the programme, something we know many of them are extremely keen to do.” Any community groups or voluntary organisations interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact VODA and let them know about the challenge they face. Selected groups will be supported to create a short film outlining their challenge, which will be presented to one of the teams of young volunteers. A team of 15 young people – as well as two members of support staff – will then give 60 hours of their time over a two week period to carry out their social action project. Participating groups will also gain lots of positive publicity and be invited to a Celebration Event at the end of the NCS programme. For more information or to submit your challenge contact VODA on 0191 643 2626 or complete the online form at www.voda.org.uk/ncs.

One team from last year’s NCS programme was concerned about the stigma surrounding people talking about their own mental health. The team decided to build a tree sculpture and decorate it with leaves on to which stories of people who suffer from mental health issues were written. The tree aimed to reduce the stigma around mental health with the motto ‘Awareness of Mental Health Needs to Grow’. Supported by mental health charity MIND, the team collected stories from different charities focusing on mental health; they also participated in a family event at Meadowell Connected where they collected more stories, then had a launch event at The Exchange in North Shields, where they exhibited the tree. Concerned with increases in loneliness and isolation, a second team of young people created a project called 'Happy Hearts'. The team wanted to provide help and support to lonely members of the community. In order to do this, they split the project into two halves. The ‘Shopping Buddies' element of the project saw the young people develop a partnership with Tesco and offer support to older shoppers who were on their own, offering conversation and company, and help with their shopping. The second half saw the young people visit the homes of local older people and host social tea parties.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 42

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. SPECIALIST BUSINESS CENTRE CONTINUES TO SPREAD ITS WINGS

T

he Swans Centre for Innovation, located in North Tyneside, is to expand with over £1.9 million of investment – creating space for around 10 additional businesses. Since it was created in 2016, the business centre has attracted a range of organisations involved in the offshore sectors. Its enviable position within the River Tyne North Bank Low Carbon Enterprise Zone has made it an ideal base for small and medium-sized businesses specialising in the advanced engineering, sub-sea, marine, oil, gas or offshore renewable energy sectors. And now, following £1.67million of investment from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), via the Government’s Local Growth Fund, the upper three vacant floors of the building will also be transformed as part of the second phase of the Centre for Innovation. North Tyneside Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, CBE, said: “With the Centre for Innovation fully occupied and the second phase set to get underway – along with our thriving office parks and brilliant local businesses – it goes to show that North Tyneside really is the place to be for business. “The work at Swans strengthens the borough’s reputation as a first-class location for the global oil, gas, renewable and maritime industries, where businesses can grow and thrive. “Swan Hunter shipyard had a worldwide reputation and I have been determined to get Swans back on the global map – I am therefore delighted that we are succeeding in bringing it back to life.” North Tyneside MP Mary Glindon added: “This is great news for North Tyneside, Wallsend and the former Swan

44

Hunter’s site. It clearly demonstrates North Tyneside Council’s on-going commitment to redeveloping the site as an important part of the offshore industry in the North East. I look forward to seeing the expansion completed.” An additional 940sqm of serviced office space, meeting rooms, breakout areas and a function suite will be created, and an existing large balcony with views over the wider site and the River Tyne will be refurbished. There will also be a serviced reception facility, providing postal collection, delivery and storage and photocopying. Offices will be mostly let on flexible easy in, easy out tenancy at Will terms, with companies occupying an entire floor, taking on a lease of three years or more. The refurbishment is expected to commence later this year and be complete in summer 2019. David Land, North East LEP Board member, said: “The Swans Centre for Innovation is an important site located right on the River Tyne and has grown in to a state-ofthe-art advanced manufacturing and technology hub servicing the offshore industry. Investing further in the site through this expansion will create opportunities to continue to attract leading companies and deliver more and better jobs for our region.” The Centre for Innovation is a major part of a wider and on-going £100million project, led by North Tyneside Council, to redevelop the former Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend. A mix of funding from the European Regional Development Fund, Homes and Communities Agency, North East Local Enterprise Partnership, private sector and council investment is being used to transform the site. For more information, or to enquire about office space, visit www.investnorthtyneside.co.uk, email: business@ northtyneside.gov.uk or call (0191) 643 6409.

SLALEY HALL, HEXHAM

RAMSIDE HALL, DURHAM

A country house hotel in Durham, set in 350 acres of private grounds including 2 18-hole golf courses, Ramside Hall Hotel has 127 rooms and suites, ranging from twin rooms to a luxurious Celebration Suite. Featuring contemporary design, the hotel retains a sense of grandeur in its style, and the rooms in the newly build extended wing are modern, bright and very spacious, all looking out onto the beautiful gardens beyond. Meanwhile, food is an important experience at the hotel, and comes in a variety of choices. The main restaurant is the award-winning Rib Room Steakhouse and Grill, which more than matches any stand-alone restaurant in the area. There’s also Fusion, the hotel’s Asian restaurant set within the spa, Pemberton’s Carvery, The Clubhouse, and of course, Norman’s Cornish Lounge for coffees and afternoon tea. Leisure at Ramside Hall Hotel is all about feeling revitalised. So, surrounded by the beauty of the grounds and golf course, the spa is extensively equipped and perfectly located for relaxation and rejuvenation. Facilities include a 25-metre pool, a gym, a thermal experience with a herbal sauna, Himalayan salt steam, aroma steam, tepidarium, sunken amphitheatre, sauna and drench showers. There is also a hydrotherapy pool, a bubble pool, a spa garden, and an outdoor vitality pool. There is even an outstanding balcony infinity pool on the first floor treatment suite with massage jets for private use, all complete with robes and slippers provided so you can really settle into your day. Using ESPA, Salt of The Earth, Morgan Taylor, Artistic Colour Gloss, and Mii Cosmetics, the spa offers a complete collection of face and body treatments, makeup, pampering and finishing touches. Their menu is full of bespoke offerings for men and women, so it’s a good opportunity to try something a little different.

The hotel is set within 1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest lays, and the Edwardian mansion and new contemporary extensions complement each other perfectly. All but seven bedrooms are within the aptly named New Room, and range from Classic to Family rooms as well as suites. The estate also has a choice of luxury lodges available to guests, which are ideal for families or groups and can sleep between four and eight people. There are three restaurants at the hotel, the main one is inspired by the surrounding area in name and culinary fare, Hadrian’s Brasserie. Duke’s Grill resides in the main building’s former drawing room while The Claret Jug serves light meals and teas during the day and in the evening it transforms into a deluxe bistro, specialising in classic dishes. The Whiskey Snug, which is true to its name in all respects, is the perfect place to finish your glass of wine or sample a fine malt. The surrounding landscape at Slaley Hall lends itself to incorporating leisure into your stay whether it be on the golf course, going for a walk around the grounds, or using the facilities which include a gym, exercise classes, a 20-metre pool, sauna and steam room, Jacuzzi and a relaxation room. There are four treatment rooms including one double, where therapists use the combined forces of ESPA and Jessica, the spa area also allows guests the added luxury of a collection of treatments and therapies, which extend to the venue’s own signature rituals and finishing touches as well. MACDONALD LINDEN HALL, MORPETH

Built in 1812, Linden Hall is an eye catching country house hotel nestled into 450 acres of Northumberland countryside and includes its own 18-hole golf course, which can be viewed from many of the 50 contemporarily furnished rooms and suites. Boasting two AA Rosettes meanwhile, is the Dobson Restaurant and the hotels fine dining offering, with views across the lawns. For lighter options there is also the Linden Tree Pub; and teas, coffees and aperitifs are served in the Monck cocktail bar. A contemporary addition to the 19th Century manor house hotel, the spa and leisure facilities at Macdonald Linden Hall bear the trademark features of the Macdonald brand – that is to say modern, and covering all pampering and fitness bases with facilities that include a gym, 12-metre pool, sauna and steam room. Also available are a host of treatments, ranging from the holistic end of the spectrum with reflexology and hopi ear candling, to the more decadent options that include Elemis facials, massages, wraps and scrubs. Manicures and pedicures using Jessica products complete the repertoire alongside tanning and finishing touches. ☞ PAMPERING: Seaham Hall's Serenity Spa

SEAHAM HALL, DURHAM

Half an hour from Durham city centre, Seaham Hall is an iconic building in the style of a Georgian country house, dating back to 1791. Today it is a five star hotel, with 22 suites that treasures its rich history and retains its eccentric character alongside contemporary interiors, all the while set against a backdrop of 37 acres of grounds perched on a cliff top. There are two restaurants at the hotel that highlight the local and seasonal produce from the surrounding area. Byron’s Restaurant delivers a classical menu in a contemporary environment, while Ozone at Seaham Hall is a spherical outdoor terrace with views of the gardens offering an informal, brasserie-style space, combining Eastern ingredients with European cuisine Offset by the scenic location, the award winning Serenity Spa at Seaham Hall is true to its name, providing a relaxed environment for wellbeing and some well-earned pampering as well. Facilities include a fitness suite, 20-metre pool with massage stations, sanarium with crystal light therapy, sauna, snail showers, hydrotherapy pool, ice fountain, plunge pools, hammam, steam room, outdoor hot tubs and a roof garden.

cuisine. For lighter meals and snacks, there is also the Conservatory Bistro with views of the golf course. The spa and leisure club at Matfen Hall is an award winning, contemporary addition, that the original proprietors would no doubt approve of thanks to a gym, aerobics studio, a 16-metre UV filtered pool, a hot tub, herbal sauna, crystal steam room, ice fountain, tropical feature shower and salt grotto. Dedicating itself to the pampering element of a country escape, the spa has five treatment suites including a dual room, where therapists use Elemis to deliver therapies including facials, wraps, massages, reflexology and thermo auricular therapy as well as head-to-toe rituals. They also use Orly nail treatments for manicures and pedicures and MAC cosmetics for make-up consultations. Matfen Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE20 0RH www.matfenhall.com

BUSINESS

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE

Whether you’re a small business, sole trader or have a site as a hobby or side-hustle, having a good website is essential. Aube Creative share their 10 ways to make sure your website is as easy to use (and as user-friendly) as possible... MAKE IT IS SMARTPHONE-FRIENDLY

ALWAYS USE RELEVANT IMAGERY

MAKE SURE IT LOADS QUICKLY

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!

We live in a Smartphone Society (Google claims 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead) so your website must display beautifully on mobile phones and tablets. People have less patience these days. Always make sure your website loads quickly and presents them what they want to see and sharpish. Faster speeds also improve your overall Google ranking. Good quality hosting always helps.

MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE

If a full-on photo shoot is out of the question you can always use good quality stock photography instead. Make sure the images match what your content is explaining. Avoid using images from free stock libraries which everyone uses over and over again. Keep it really simple. Don't bombard your readers with jargon only you and your team can understand. If neccessary, use a glossary. And avoid spelling mistakes.

CALLS-TO-ACTION

Develop an SEO strategy. Consider the search terms your audience might use to find you. Include content that's relevant: how-to videos, blog articles, e-books...

What do you want people to do once they've landed on your website? CTA buttons are one of the many elements used to indicate the next action a user should take. Example call-to-actions are: Download your Price List, Newsletter sign-up, Enter a competition...

MAKE IT EASY TO NAVIGATE

DON'T FORGET YOUR CONTACT INFO

Stick to navigation protocols people have come to expect. Always ensure navigation buttons are obvious and easily identifiable (towards the top of the page is best) and that all your links are working correctly so the user can quickly switch from page to page.

DISPLAY A STRONG CONSISTENT BRAND MESSAGE

Project the right image. Position your logo and core message in the top left hand corner. It’s the part of the screen to which our eyes are most naturally drawn.

Make it VERY easy for people to get in touch with you. You'd be surprised how many websites don't display correct contact info on every page. And it's so important!

DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Your website is usually the first glimpse a potential new customer will get of your business. And first impressions last forever. Asking a professional to help can often save you time and money while you focus on developing your business instead.

NEED SOME HELP? Founded in 2008 aube=creative loves helping customers to create websites their own customers will love to use. Consultations are FREE. Call Paul on 079393 02550. Or visit aubecreative.co.uk
