‘Digital High Street’ launched to help boost local economy

S

hoppers are being offered a new, easy way to find local businesses operating across North Tyneside using a searchable ‘digital high street’ website. Buy Local North Tyneside began as a simple online list of businesses open during lockdown, and has since developed into website www. localnorthtyneside.co.uk, detailing which businesses are open and what goods and services they provide. So far hundreds of organisations have been added to the website, where shoppers can search by business name, type or location, to find the provider of a product or service they need - encouraging people to ‘buy local’. All that businesses need to do to appear on Buy Local North Tyneside is go to www.buylocalnorthtyneside. co.uk/register-business/ and enter their details. The three business chambers of North Shields, Whitley Bay and Wallsend came together to start the Buy Local North Tyneside project in a bid to encourage footfall to town centres and high streets, and it rapidly grew with the support of local businesses and North Tyneside Council. Chair of North Shields Business Chamber, Miles Walton, said: “When lockdown happened it was clear that it would be very useful for shoppers to have an idea of which businesses were still operating across North Tyneside. “Once we got going on the list of open businesses it then became obvious how useful a searchable, upto-date directory of local businesses would be both for consumers and the organisations themselves. “Thanks to the hard work of many local businesses who have pulled together, we have created something which we hope will be the first port of call for shoppers in the area. “Our plan is that this new website will eventually feature every business in North Tyneside and will help to bring 6

safe footfall back to our high streets and give boost the local economy.” The website, which is free for companies to register for, will be kept up to date with businesses’ latest developments and is linked to specific ‘Buy Local North Tyneside’ Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages. The website was put together by the Chambers, with the help of Canny Clever and Cargo Creative, who collaborated on the technical side of the site, and Newcastle Building Society. Retail champion and digital marketing expert Graham Soult has also been an informal consultant on the project. He believes initiatives like this are vital in helping to revitalise the High Street. He said: “I am a big advocate of the high street going online – I encourage all the businesses I work with to get themselves on the internet and using social media. I don’t see the internet

“The Buy Local North Tyneside project was launched in a bid to encourage footfall to town centres and high streets.”

as much of a threat to the high street, as it can be a benefit. “Bricks and mortar businesses can use the internet and social media to drive football to their premises and Buy Local North Tyneside is doing just that. “Towns like Whitley Bay, North Shields and Wallsend have so much to talk positively about on their high streets. When headlines are often so negative, people can forget the great things that are on offer in these town centres. “This website rounds up in one place all the businesses there are out there that are serving the community and reminds people how much there is in their local area.” Cllr Bruce Pickard, Deputy Mayor and North Tyneside Council’s Cabinet member for Business and Economic Development, agreed. He said: “As a council we’re taking a lead role in the recovery of the local economy so we’re pleased to support the businesses and Chambers of Trade working together on this. “This new tool is a great way to encourage people to shop local and support businesses in such challenging and uncertain times.” Follow Buy Local North Tyneside on social media at @BLNorthTyneside.

TOP STARS HEAD TO OUTDOOR ARENA IN NEWCASTLE Virgin Money Unity Arena will play host to an array of world class stars. The UK's first dedicated socially distanced music venue is arriving in Newcastle this month. Virgin Money Unity Arena has been set up in Gosforth Park, a perfect location to host the wide variety of events on offer. This is a unique outdoor experience, playing host to 500 viewing spaces and a maximum capacity of 2500. The outdoor arena will give music and comedy fans the chance to see some world class performers, whilst ensuring all safety guidelines are met. Stars such as Jimmy Carr, Ronan Keating, Alfie Boe, Van Morrison and many more will all head to the region over the coming weeks. This is how it will work: When you book tickets to your chosen event, you will receive a confirmation email and e-ticket. Please keep hold of these and do NOT delete them. You will be asked for your car registration and will be allocated a time slot for arrival. You are asked to turn up at the allotted time and no sooner, spaces are pre-allocated so you will not get a better space if you arrive early. Entry will be checked via license plate to ensure no interaction is needed between venue staff and customers. When arriving at the Entry Gate you will be asked to show Security Staff your booking confirmation email and you will then be directed by staff to the Car Park. Cars will be parked safely 2 metre distance from each other and attendees will be guided to their own private viewing area, again with a 2 metre area around them, so you can be rest assured that you will enjoy the experience of the performance with a safe distance from other guests around you. 10

“The outdoor arena will give music and comedy fans the chance to see performers, whilst ensuring all safety guidelines are met.” The staff will then direct you to your personal area where you can enjoy this special show, collecting your pre-ordered food and drink on arrival. If you didn't get the chance to pre-order then don’t worry, you can order on site when you arrive! There will be hand sanitiser stations outside each toilet location, plus additional hand sanitisers for all members of staff. All staff will have training in advance about the safety procedures for maintaining hygiene including hand washing and wearing gloves when serving and delivering food. Staff and support stewards will be required to wear masks at all times. Each row of platforms will have a dedicated section of toilets to limit groups. Toilet queues will operate with a 2m distance. When the show ends please keep your distance from others, staff will direct you back to your

car and you will be given directions to safely exit the site. Please be patient and please be safe. NORTH SHIELDS MASTERPLAN CONSULTATION AGREED Plan aims to combine living, working and retail and transform the town centre North Tyneside Council’s Cabinet agreed to consult on a draft masterplan to revitalise North Shields town centre.

The council’s ‘Ambition for North Shields and the Fish Quay’ masterplan, which is a key part of the wider ‘Ambition for North Tyneside’ strategy, sets out proposals to create a smaller, more vibrant and connected town centre as and when funding becomes available. The aim is to combine living, working and retail and transform the town centre into a family-friendly destination as well as connecting it to an increasingly vibrant Fish Quay. This will be supported by improving public transport, walking and cycling connections and enhancing the built environment and public spaces to host events and festivals. The Ambition for North Tyneside lays out a number of bold projects reflecting the authority’s ambition around its ‘our people’, ‘our place’ and ‘our economy’ themes. It focuses on the needs of every part of the borough and sets out how the council hopes to help shape North Tyneside and make sure it is fit for the future. At its recent meeting the Cabinet agreed that the draft North Shields masterplan will be used to consult with residents, businesses and stakeholders. Further details about the consultation will be announced in the coming weeks. The plan has been developed since receiving £200,000 from the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NoTCA) and it outlines nine separate projects for the town centre and Fish Quay to be developed. These include enhancing the appearance of key 12

areas, creating a new transport hub and interchange and town square to host events, markets and performances, improved walking and cycling routes in the town centre, a new cultural quarter and riverside walkway linking the town centre to the Fish Quay. There are also proposals for high-quality housing at key locations and moving the North Shields ferry landing to Western Quay. The plans build on the council’s recent achievements in North Shields, including the continuing housing developments at Northumberland Square, the proposed redevelopment of Unicorn House, the ongoing restoration of the Wooden Dolly statue, the successful Heritage Action Zone funding bid from Historic England to breathe new life into Howard Street and the work to ensure the long-term economic future of the Fish Quay. Deputy Mayor Cllr Bruce Pickard said: “There’s no doubt that this year has been one of the toughest in recent memory but these are really exciting times North Shields and the Fish Quay and this is some welcome good news for residents and visitors. Our ambitious plans to create great places to live, a good choice of high-quality housing and a thriving visitor destination will transform the town centre and build on our recent successes in regenerating Whitley Bay and Wallsend. “These are still proposals and as a listening council we will be seeking the views of residents, businesses and other interested parties to help shape our thinking before the plan is finalised.” For more details visit my.northtyneside.gov.uk/category/1415/ambition-north-shields

urfacing with care and heartfelt determination in adjusting to a ‘new normality’, Concept Eye Clinic in Tynemouth is back to serve an appreciative coastal audience strictly by appointment. The Clinic Lead, Sam, has experienced a seminal few weeks with the launch of a new eye care plan designed to help meet the demands of our complex lives. In these uncertain times, we asked Sam… Why is a payment plan for eyes a sensible idea? “This was actually conceptualised before lockdown and is more relevant than ever! People are more discerning about what they buy and want real value for money. Quite simply, this plan is not just about vision, but about the health of your eyes. For a small monthly premium, you will access the diagnostic components of an advanced eye exam, where the optometrist can detect any aberrations, predict disease and correct and optimise vision, before it’s too late. Alongside the clinical element, you can enjoy benefits on frames and lenses as often as required. Who does the plan benefit? Anyone with a prescription, those concerned about the health of their eyes, NHS patients who need more than a basic eye exam and, contact lens wearers. With the increase in unregulated supermarket and online offers without a clinical requirement for 22

COMBAT ACADEMIC LOSSES FROM LOCKDOWN WITH ART Jenn Diaz, Director at Turpentyne Fine Art Classes, discusses how the Arts can enrich child development during Covid and beyond 2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenge and devastating losses. These past few months have turned our adult worlds upside down. Imagine for a moment the distinctly different challenge this has been for young people. Our children are living through this whilst their bodies and minds are undergoing essential physical and cognitive development. The upending of their routines has for many led to a significant drop in educational and social stimuli. Four months on, and our children are desperate to see their friends, to return to their familiar routines, and to find an outlet for expressing everything on their minds.

Gerhard Richter once said “Art is the highest form of hope” For Turpentyne Fine Art Classes, located on Ashburton Road in Gosforth, this sentiment has always been amongst our guiding principles. Now, in the world of 2020, access to the arts has never been more important. Our children are experiencing an event that will transform their lives, for better or worse. Art equips them with the tools to process and express their thoughts and feelings as they develop healthy emotional responses to our ever-changing world. Not only is art a way to express oneself creatively, but it is also an essential tool for learning and cognitive development. Studies have shown that children who participate in the arts are more likely to achieve and excel academically. Educators understand that the critical and abstract thinking processes used in art lead to the better understanding of academic subjects such as languages, science, and maths. At Turpentyne, we aim to provide this enrichment. We understand that art is essential for our growth and development as emotionally healthy human beings. Art is particularly important for children, as additionally they are developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Creating a drawing or painting requires visual measurement, an understanding of line, form, and composition. It requires fine motor skills

to manipulate mediums and accurately execute the process of putting pencil to paper. At Turpentyne we have always offered a calm and soothing environment where our students can be creative as they learn the “how to” of art. That still holds true, but the new challenge of Covid has inspired us to adapt, so that we can keep our students safe whilst still completing our mission of providing the highest quality art instruction. We are truly thankful for the unique opportunity we have to continue making a difference in the lives of so many children in the Northeast. We are looking forward to seeing all our students creating art in the Turpentyne studio again! www.Turpentyne.com

HOW TO STAY POSITIVE DURING TESTING TIMES Kick negativity to the curb with these tips from local fitness expert, Aaron Phillips

E

ven in ‘normal times’ we are challenged daily with negative situations, and how we deal with them is what defines who we are and how we spend the rest of our day. Will we brush it off or let them resonate? I am sure we will all agree that currently it is hard to keep your head above the water and stay positive with so many people having negative opinions wherever we look. Below I have written a handful of top tips on how I would kick negativity in the chops, or help a client kick it into action.

I missed out on something or I upset my friends. But in reality, if they are really friends they will understand if you say no- and what do you think you will actually miss out on? I would much rather make time for myself than sit in a bar feeling exhausted and resentful.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE ANTISOCIAL

How often do you make time for you? A lot of the busy individuals and professional I work with come to me saying that they feel terrible, they have no energy, and just can’t be bothered today, and its often to do with a heavy work load, negative news, or miserable weather. I say the same thing to everybody - ‘ leave it at the door! This is your time to forget about everything that is going on at home, on the news, social media and at work. Use this time and studio space to focus on you. I GUARANTEE you will see things in a different perspective in just an hour… and they always do!

Social media is the worst! Everybody has to have their say and your opinions can be drowned out before you have even expressed them. Luckily social medial can be filtered, switched off or paused. I am very particular about who I follow, friend and engage with on social media. This can be on a personal level or on a business level. I am not afraid to unfriend, block or snooze somebody who I find is displaying negative vibes on my timelines. Literally 2 seconds after you do this you will completely forget you even did it, and they will never know, so what have you got to lose?

MEDITATE

You may think of sitting on Cullercoats Beach at sunrise with your legs crossed. NOPE! Meditation (in my opinion) is simple, something that disconnects you from everyday life and lets you focus on you. Personally, I find running is my meditation, it is pretty much the only time I do not have a phone and lose all connection with reality. I find myself deep in thought when I run, because my endorphins are running so high I often feel very inspired which makes me feel more connected with my work.

LEAVE IT AT THE DOOR

THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE

This was recently introduced to me by a client and, although it talks about methods I already practice, it is still very helpful to realign all of this. I will leave it up to you to Google this and put it into action. A couple of years ago somebody told me ‘Stay in control of the controllables’ and it is stuck with me. As a fitness professional I understand how important mental health is in order to improve physical health. I hope that this article has helped you stay positive throughout these testing time and that you are able to put some of these into practice.

Meditation can be achieved with a variety of activities such as gardening, swimming or even reading. Have a think about what really helps you disconnect.

If you are looking to improve your physical and mental fitness, join me at Ocean Fit in Whitley Bay or remotely via www.OceanFitOnline.com

DON’T BE AFRAID TO SAY NO!

Remember, stay in control of the controllables!

Sometimes do you find yourself in a rutt of saying yes just because you get FOMO (fear of missing out) or you are afraid to miss out. This is something I am much better at, there has been times in my life where I have been burnt out because I have not been able to say no in case 28

Foto Snaps, your local photographic retailer, is celebrating its 30th year in business!

raeme and Steven Watson are somewhat of a rarity in today’s economic climate – they own and operate a business which is proudly celebrating thirty years successful trading. This means that they are one of the longeststanding independent retailers in Wallsend. Their anniversary is testament to the fact that the business has kept abreast with modern technological advances and that the brothers can draw on their comprehensive knowledge in all areas of photography to advise their clients. Over the years, their range of merchandise and expertise has expanded and diversified so that the services they offer are second to none. Originally, the main focus of their business was selling cameras and developing and processing films. The procedure would take twenty four hours so clients had to leave the film and make another trip to the shop the next day to collect their photographs. Not so now! The range of goods on offer is too extensive to do full justice to it in words – it has to be seen to be believed – but here is a flavour of what is on offer. There are still, of course, cameras for sale but now the range means that you can get exactly the right one for your purpose. Do you want informal snaps of your wedding day? – there are disposable cameras so that you can put one on each table at the reception and have a visual record of who was there and what was going on!! Do you take photography more seriously? – look at their range of cameras and accessories designed to satisfy even the most specific needs.

If you want advice on what is best for you, or if you have a camera needing repairs, then Fotosnaps should be your first port of call. And once you have taken the photos they can be processed digitally (as you wait) then you can find the perfect frame or album to keep them in. Nowadays you often need picture identification or passport photographs so why not pop in for a professional picture which you can be certain will meet the criteria demanded for official photos. The shop carries an impressive range of mobile phones, batteries and chargers but if your interests are on distant objects check out their binoculars and telescopes. They also offer a service which will be of interest to those of us in the 'Silver Surfer' generation – they can transfer cine or video footage to DVD's so you can relive important events. As well as an extended range of equipment, the brothers offer an extended range of services. They can produce, in seconds, prints from any form of media (iPhone, iPad, Facebook, etc.) and can make enlargements or even reproduce the photo on gift ideas such as mugs, jute bags, cushions, calendars, greeting cards, to name but a few. You can also download the Fujifilm Imagine App to your phone from the Apple or Google Play store and turn your photos into beautiful prints or photo gifts. Use the store code fotosnaps and you can click and collect in store. The fact that the business has not only reached its' twenty fifth anniversary but has grown in size and reputation, is a testament to the way Graeme and Steven move with the times and guarantee customer satisfaction. 33

GOSFORTH CIVIC THEATRE CAFÉ REOPENS NEW MENU AND A NEW CHEF, OFFERING TASTY BALANCED MEALS FOR THE BODY, MIND AND SOUL

G

osforth residents can look forward to a refreshed and reinvigorated Gosforth Civic Theatre café. They reopen this August with a new chef heralding a brand new menu to go alongside a safe and welcoming environment as the Theatre finally reopens its doors. You can expect a mouth-watering menu, bursting with flavour, using the freshest ingredients from the finest local suppliers in the region. At the heart of the dishes is a desire to celebrate good quality produce and create balanced meals that are not only tasty but are good for the body, mind and soul. From the Brunch menu you can choose from, among others, the healthy and delicious baked eggs and homemade beans, poached eggs on vegetable fritters, or opt for the hearty Big Breakfast, or even a breakfast roll if you’re in a rush. Lunch has a selection of fresh and tasty salads, satisfying sandwiches (including a killer turkey club) and a grazing board for those that want to share. The Theatre’s café has always been a hit with families, so it’s only right that there’s also a bigger and more exciting kids’ menu with more choice and some great additions (cinnamon French toast sticks, anyone?!) to keep the little ones happy. With cakes and bread supplied from Gosforth favourites Pink Lane Bakery and weekly specials, GCT will be a must visit in Gosforth’s dining scene. Behind the new menu is the Theatre’s newest member of the team. Born on the beautiful island of St. Lucia, Dyonne Branch comes in as chef, boasting 20 years of experience working for one of the best hotels in the Caribbean, Sugar Beach; excellent restaurants Etain, Zinc and Cameron House Hotel in Glasgow; and Malmaison, Hotel du Vin and as Head Chef at Gusto

36

Italians in Newcastle. Excited to get started, Dyonne said, “GCT Café has the potential to be amazing. We are surrounded by fantastic local suppliers, great ingredients, and a fantastic community. I believe that eating well is not just the food we feed our bodies, but a means of feeding our entire being, and I’ve tried to put that ethos in our new menu.” The charity-run, community venue on Regent Farm Road has been closed to the public since March due to the Coronavirus outbreak. After an uncertain four months, where the entirety of their income was taken away and all but two staff placed on furlough, GCT is now being readied for a safe, post-lockdown reopening. The main dining space, which will have reduced seating to maintain social distancing, will be in the John Jennings Studio with access to outside seating in the Garden; hand sanitising points have been installed throughout the building; staff will be undertaking rigorous and regular cleaning routines; and they will be running table service and allowing a table booking system to control numbers. Building Manager Joseph Harrop, who has overseen the changes and staff training stated, “We wanted to take our time and make sure we are as safe and responsible as we can be. The safety and wellbeing of our staff and customers is paramount and we’re confident that the systems and procedures we’ve put in place will make those that visit us feel comfortable and at home. We can’t wait to get going again.” Gosforth Civic Theatre reopens their café on Monday 17th August. For more information and to book a table visit www.gosforthcivictheatre.co.uk/cafe or call 0191 284 3700.

Reg, beneficiary of the Good Neighbours Scheme

WHY EVERYBODY REALLY DOES NEED GOOD NEIGHBOURS LOCAL VODA VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED WEEKLY SHOPPING SUPPORT TO THOSE SHIELDING DURING LOCKDOWN

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how many people in North Tyneside are without support networks or people to call upon when they need help. The lockdown of the country, introduction of shielding for those most at risk and the need to socially isolate for others left many unable to access shopping or prescriptions, through a combination of lack of availability of online deliveries, digital exclusion and having no one to call on. People were left feeling isolated and anxious about where their next meal would come from. With the support of North Tyneside Council and a whole range of local community organisations, North Tyneside VODA was able to up-scale their existing Good Neighbours project to help. A shopping and prescription collection service was quickly created that has seen 312 volunteers provide help via the North Tyneside COVID-19 Support Hub to over 1943 residents since March. The Good Neighbours have provided regular weekly shopping support to 191 residents and 38

delivered an average of 132 weekly food parcels. The volunteers have also ensured people received their prescriptions, with around 600 delivered so far, and to help support mental health 350 fortnightly activity packs were distributed.* Robin Fry, VODA’s Chief Executive commented: “I’m really proud of the work we’ve done so far with the local authority, our staff, but mostly proud of the volunteers, because without

them we wouldn’t have been able to support those residents who need the most help at the moment. We had an amazing number of people offer their support and we are so thankful for their hard work and dedication.” Here is just some of the feedback from beneficiaries: “I really appreciated someone’s help when I needed it. It is a wonderful service what you are doing to help vulnerable people in the community.” “Debra is both kind and caring and only one of two people I speak to directly each week while I’m in total Isolation and a lifeline for me.” “The kindness and empathy of people really takes my breath away. Liz, my volunteer is great always has time for a chat and is always so cheerful, nothing is a bother for her.”

Iris, beneficiary of the Good Neighbours Scheme

“Paul the volunteer is a darling a very kind man, he always has time for a chat and asks me how I am. You are all brilliant thank you so much.”

Food parcels being delivered during lockdown

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE GOOD NEIGHBOURS? The UK Government paused shielding in England as of 1 August 2020; however, VODA’s Good Neighbours are still around to help with shopping and prescriptions for those who are still unable to go out. VODA is keen that as part of North Tyneside’s COVID-19 recovery the support to beneficiaries will go beyond providing shopping and they have created a number of new exciting volunteer roles to help people take their first steps back out into the world. Josie Robinson, VODA’s Ending Loneliness Coordinator commented: “We quickly realised after talking to beneficiaries and volunteers that people are very anxious about coming out of isolation and returning to the world. A lot has changed since the lockdown and they are nervous of the unknown, concerned about safety, don’t know the correct protocol for shopping and visiting places and many other things. Some people have spent the whole of lockdown on their own, many suffering from loneliness and isolation. We are keen to see how our amazing Good Neighbours volunteers can support this progression back into the world with these new volunteer buddy roles.”

1. Good Neighbours Garden Gate Buddy: volunteers will offer a much needed socially distanced chat with a local resident who is feeling socially isolated. 2. Good Neighbour Walking Buddy: volunteers who will be there to enable residents to get outside again, explore the local area and regain their confidence with walking. 3. Good Neighbours Shopping Buddy: volunteers who can help support someone from who has been shielding to go out shopping for the first time since lockdown. The new roles have been trialled by Good Neighbours’ Volunteer Paul, who provided feedback on how to ensure they work best for both the volunteer and beneficiary. Paul commented: “I find my role as Shopping Buddy to be incredibly rewarding as I get to see

Good Neighbours Volunteer, Kerry Roffe

the direct benefit this has on the individual and take great pride in seeing his confidence develop and independence restored. “Upon first arriving at the shop, my beneficiary was extremely anxious and wasn’t sure if he could cope. After listening to his concerns and providing reassurance that we were doing this as a team, we began shopping. I followed behind him at a 2m distance, helping to watch his back for any space-invading shoppers and guided him around the one way system. As his anxiety was causing him to forget things, I was able to prompt him for items he may have missed. He was exhausted once we reached the checkouts and the support I gave him by packing the shopping was very welcome... as was his smile and sense of achievement to me.” If you would like to be a Good Neighbours Buddy, please email josie.robinson@voda.org.uk. *Figures up to 31 July 2020 39

The Importance of Organising your Affairs

Jacqueline Emmerson, Managing Director of Emmersons Solicitors, explains what she has learned during Covid-19 The world of Covid has been a very strange place for us Wills & Probate Solicitors. One of our immediate issues was how to have wills signed and witnessed. You may not know this, but for a will to be valid you need the testator, the person who is making the will, and two witnesses. They must all be present at the time the will is signed. However, a beneficiary, a person to whom you are leaving all or part of your estate, cannot be a witness and must not be present when you sign your will. Suddenly many of our clients could not leave the house. Usually we have only a handful of clients at any one time who can’t visit us because they are housebound. So we set up a new system. We offer you a telephone appointment, draft your will and then offer you a second appointment the Drive Through Will Signing. It takes about five minutes and then you can be on your way. We are lucky that you are able to pull up in the car outside either of our offices. If you are a couple then one of you stays in the car whilst the other signs their will. This has proved invaluable to medics working long hours who couldn’t find time for a traditional appointment, couples and people living alone who couldn’t find witnesses. Which brings me to the issue of probate. I am frequently appointed as an executor. Many couples come in to see me in good health and think its a good idea to appoint each other as executor. But what happens when your spouse has predeceased you? Who will manage your estate? Or did you choose a friend or cousin to be your executor? I would not thank any friend who did that to me. You have just lumbered them with a huge task. Do you realise that there is a lot of work and expense involved to sort out an estate. Money has to be found immediately for death

JACQUELINE EMMERSON

“Your family and friends may visit regularly but how are they to know where to look for documents? Do you want them to be searching through every draw and cupboard?” certificates, probate fees, cleaning teams, funeral directors. Someone has to visit your home to search for your pre-paid funeral plan, house insurance, cash and valuables. In one case recently it took four of our staff three hours each to gather paperwork. We had to throw out a lifetime’s worth of bills etc. all the time looking out for that tiny slip of paper that could indicate savings into an old life assurance policy. 12 hours of work on the first day alone! There was no pre-paid funeral plan so I appointed a funeral director. I cannot organise a funeral until I know whether or not there is such a plan. That’s why we have to work at top speed. Now imagine your friend dealing with all of that. So, my message to you is this. Please organise your affairs. At Emmersons Solicitors we store our clients’ wills free of charge, and we send them a copy to keep at home.

That way the original does not go missing and cannot be tampered with. Why not pin a card to your kitchen units setting out solicitors details, pre-paid funeral plan, if there is one and house insurance, company and policy number. Your family and friends may visit regularly but how are they to know where to look for documents? Do you want them to be searching through every draw and cupboard. What I do is highly personal, I have to check everything that belonged to you. I have found gold sovereigns in the back of draws, jewellery hidden in blankets etc. it all has to be searched for. If you would like to organise your affairs and make life so much easier for your family and friends then I can be contacted at je@emmersons-solicitors.co.uk or 0191 2846989.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £180 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. BEWARE OF SMISHING! THE NEW KID ON THE FRAUD SQUAD’S BLOCK By Sarah Davey

A

few years ago, ‘phishing’ was big news. There can’t be a person in the UK who hasn’t received a scam email from an imaginary Nigerian prince or a shady London Investment Office. Most of us are wise to phishing emails. But now there’s ‘smishing’. This is shorthand for SMS phishing. SMS stands for ‘short messaging service’ and is basically ‘texting’. So smishing is the text equivalent of phishing! Smishing texts are sent for the sole purpose of committing opportunistic fraud. The texts look like they’re from a reputable company and they all have one thing in common – they encourage you to take action, often calling a premium rate number or sharing your confidential information. The fraudulent text often claims to be from a trusted organisation such as: • Your bank, informing you that there is a ‘problem with your account’ such as irregular activity or lack of funds. • A retailer, offering ‘vouchers’, ‘gift cards’ or ‘prizes’. • A technology provider such as Apple, Netflix or Google, notifying that you ‘need to validate an account’. • A parcel delivery company, notifying you that you need to ‘confirm that you want a parcel to be delivered’. • HMRC, informing you that you are ‘due a tax refund’.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

It can be easy to mistake smishing texts for genuine messages but there are give-aways. They are often peppered with spelling mistakes and they may tell you your account is in danger and you need to act immediately, the threat being that if you don’t your account will be suspended or 46

reported or blocked. This is a scare tactic, to prompt you to follow their instructions. They may tell you that you have won a prize, or that you will miss out on an exclusive offer unless you call a number immediately. If it seems too good to be true then it almost certainly is.

STOP AND THINK

Don’t click on any links in the text message or follow any instructions. Do not call any numbers given in the message. If your account is in danger then no phone company, bank, credit card company or HMRC will expect you to contact them directly from the text. Go to the original source of the company the text claims to be from. Dazzling Dahlias By Rachael Leverton

Cafe aux Lait

Cornel Brons

Over the past few years, I've fallen in love with dahlias for their ability to provide autumn colour.

I think Dahlias are like the glamorous friend who arrives late to the party, fresh and full of life, outshining all the other guests who are a bit tired and past their best... or maybe that's just me being fanciful. Either way the vibrant colours, tactile textures and stunning petal formations make the Dahlia queen of the September garden for me. The dahlia originates from Mexico and there are 30 species and around 20,000 cultivars! Don't let its exotic past fool you; it hails from high mountain regions so is happy in cool, wet, and windy conditions. It doesn't matter what size your garden is there is a dahlia for you, from dwarf varieties to giants. There is even one variety (Imperialis) that can reach 6m (20 feet) in the wild in its native South America. If your garden is on the exposed side, or you live in the north then look for the pompom varieties as 52

the colourful globes are very hardy, standing up to the worst of the British weather. Dahlia bulbs are comprised of tubers. In order to sprout the tuber must have an ‘eye’. If you live in a very cold area, you can dig up the tubers at the end of the season and plant them out again the following year. My garden is quite sheltered, so I simply cut them down and mulch them. I learned the hard way that mulched dahlias survive and thrive much better than unmulched plants. Dahlia tubers are hungry beasts and don't take kindly to being undernourished. The first year I planted them I didn't mulch and the second year the flowers

Lubega Power Yellow-Orange

were sparse and undersized. On the advice of a neighbour I fed them, mulched them, and watered them through the hot season, and they returned in full vigour the following year. Dahlias come in the most amazing array of colours. 'Lubega Power Yellow-Orange' sounds like a toilet cleaner but is in fact a gloriously tropical dwarf bedding dahlia which produces masses of double flowers well into autumn if you deadhead it regularly. At 30cm you can plant it at the front of the border or in window boxes to brighten the dullest of days. Dahlia 'Cornel Brons' produces wonderful round copper-coloured architectural flowers. They are long-lasting and make spectacular cut flowers. They look good in the middle of a border because they grow to 90cm. For gardeners who prefer a more subtle or unusual colour palette: Dahlia 'Cafe aux Lait produces enormous exquisite blooms in a soft apricot-pink colour, which fade to vintage cream. It's the perfect dahlia for creating a focal point toward the back of the border as it grows to 120cm. Dahlia 'Creme de Cassis' has stunning two-tone petals on water lily-shaped flowers. It grows to 90cm so is good for the middle of a border and also looks fabulous in a big pot.

WORK COMMENCES ON SPECIALIST HOUSING FOR THOSE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA Work has now commenced on a joint project between Northumberland Estates and Age UK North Tyneside’s subsidiary company EveryDay Homes, which will see the construction of specialist housing for those living with dementia. The development will be the first of its kind in North Tyneside and is located on a three-acre site adjacent to the A19 in Backworth, accessed from Killingworth Lane. The project has evolved following extensive consultation with those living with dementia their families, as well as North Tyneside Council. It will provide housing for 40 people living with dementia or other cognitive impairment. The scheme will create 45-50 new specialist care jobs plus management roles when doors open in June 2021. Chief Executive of Age UK North Tyneside, Dawn McNally, said: “We are incredibly excited about this new development with Northumberland Estates. “The company has invested heavily, not just in the construction of the scheme, but also in terms of expertise in housing for people in later life, pulling on advice from Stirling University and Shadbolts, the Architects. She added: “We believe we offer a unique approach to housing as we can offer our full range of services to our tenants, which range from community based health and wellbeing activities to professional care and support services and Admiral Nursing.” The three-acre site will include 28 apartments for a mix of individuals and couples, and a further two bungalows, specially designed to accommodate up to twelve individuals who may present more complex needs. Each resident will have access to a variety of highstandard communal areas that accommodate both social and private leisure activities and have access to an on-site dementia specialist Admiral Nurse. The scheme is unique to North Tyneside as it will focus on supporting those with dementia; all residents will have their own tenancy to maximise their financial independence, care and support tailored to individual need and provide homes for life. The grounds will be landscaped to encourage residents 54

to regularly enjoy the outdoors which will be greatly beneficial to their wellbeing. The site will be tastefully screened by trees and will also include interesting features such as a sensory garden, raised flower beds for communal gardening, as well as a wildflower meadow and fruit orchard. Plans for the development have been in the pipeline for three years and the multi-million £ project will be completed by Brims Construction. Colin Barnes, Head of Planning and Development at Northumberland Estates, said: “This is a very exciting project for us. “Northumberland Estates has created a number of successful developments on North Tyneside over the past few years. We are looking to put back into the community and projects such as this are one way to achieve this. “Through Age UK North Tyneside we have been able to access invaluable advice from those living with dementia and their carers which has been incorporated into the design at all levels. Councillor Gary Bell, North Tyneside said: “This is a new and exciting development in North Tyneside. Working together with Northumberland Estates and EveryDay, this is an opportunity for us to create something unique that is tailored to the needs of people with dementia and that offers a well-designed housing and care service. “This service will enable people with dementia to remain independent and live in their own home for longer. A skilled care team from EveryDay will be based in the development 24-7 and will offer care sensitively and in response to individuals’ changing needs. “The development will offer those with dementia the choice to live somewhere that feels like home – somewhere they can decorate and furnish – with the confidence and security offered by the building and the care team that they will be safe and well for years to come.” www.everydayuk.org/everyday-homes-havelock-place

“We are the only private Audiology service in the North East that can offer a full range of diagnostic and rehabilitative treatments.”

We can offer hearing protection along with hearing aids, tinnitus and balance rehabilitation. We are receiving many reports of people struggling with hearing loss due to the introduction of face masks, either at work, or just when they are out and about. They have realised that they lipread to aid communication and now this isn’t always an option. Maybe now would be a good time to consider hearing aids? We are excited to announce we are now fitting the newest Widex hearing aids – the Widex MOMENT – the first hearing aid which doesn’t sound like a hearing aid. It delivers the most pure, natural sound ever so you can hear every moment like you used to. We have also introduced Remotecare, so your hearing aids can be fitted or adjusted in your own home, without the need for frequent visits to the clinic. We are currently offering a 10% discount to NHS employees on all of our

Hearing aids, so please get in touch for a hearing assessment and we can discuss your individual needs and the options of hearing aids that would be suitable for you. Badminton Benefits REASONS TO GIVE BADMINTON A GO By Tracey Anderson

At the time of writing gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools are still closed. But that doesn't mean that we can't participate in sport. From 1st June we've been able to play badminton outside, in the garden or on a marked court. If you've never played before now might be the perfect time to give it a try. It's a great sport for people of all ages and fitness levels. Those who play regularly are more mentally alert, with better fitness and agility levels. It's also a very social game and what we need right now are low-risk ways to socialise, because socialising is good for our mental health. Played at a high level it can burn up to 450 calories an hour but even a gentle to-and-fro with the grand kids in the local park will burn 150-200 calories. Badminton, like tennis requires total engagement. Players need to predict how an opponent will play a shot and then plan a counter attack, which improves mental agility. There is research to suggest that sports which involve a combination of both mental and physical activity offer a protective effect against dementia. Badminton requires a lot of movement, in multiple directions. It requires short sprints, jumps, stretches, and lunges as players strive to reach the shuttlecock, which means that legs, arms, and core muscles are all being worked. This builds strength and flexibility. Badminton is a great 'build-up' sport. You can start as slow as you like, tapping the shuttlecock over the net, trying to keep a rally going for as long as possible. As you improve and become quicker on your feet your shots will naturally increase in speed and strength too, and you will almost certainly want to introduce 60

“Played at a high level it can burn up to 450 calories an hour, but even a gentle to-and-fro with the grand kids in the local park will burn 150-200 calories. element of competitiveness. Played at higher levels the shuttlecock travels at impressive speeds. Badminton is actually the fastest racquet sport in the world. Professional players can smash the shuttle at speeds of over 200mph! This speed encourages players to improve co-ordination and core stability. Again, studies have shown that people with good core strength and co-ordination are less likely to suffer falls as they age. The best way to get started is to find a friend of similar fitness level and get out and give it a go. Having a practice partner will make you both more likely to commit to playing regularly. It's near impossible to play properly competitively outside as you are at the mercy of any breeze and a shuttlecock is 12 times lighter than a tennis ball. But if the aim

is to improve agility and fitness while socialising and having fun, don't let that stop you. By the time sports facilities open back up your confidence will have grown, and you may be ready for the next step of joining a badminton club or regular session. And the beauty of badminton is that it can be played indoors all winter, so rain never has to stop play. If you're a more accomplished badminton player who is missing their fix you could try Crossminton, which is designed for outdoor play, doesn't need a court, and combines elements of badminton, tennis, and squash. There are plenty places locally where you’ll be able to hone your newly acquired skills. Visit www.sportnorthtyneside. org.uk/badminton or www. tynesidebadmintoncentre.co.uk for more details.

BOOKS

A GOOD READ By Willow Coby

THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER by Kate Moreton Getting married is one of those big events in your life that changes everything. For Elodie, plans for her upcoming wedding are being pulled away from her by her controlling future mother-in-law. Elodie works as an archivist in London and one day discovers an old satchel, an old photo, and an old sketch of a large house that will change everything and lead Elodie on a quest to discover the truth about the house and the lady in the photograph. Was she meant to find these items and how are they ultimately connected to her own past? Kate Morton is known for epic sagas – and at nearly 600 pages this is no exception. Told in multiple timelines, the action moves swiftly from the present to the 1880s, the early 1900s, and the 1940s as the story of the house and its inhabitants unfold. With a vast cast of characters this does require some concentration to keep track of who’s who, and sometimes the story changes time period just as you were becoming engrossed. However, it is worth persevering. Part love story, part ghost story, part murder mystery, and part commentary on social class divide in the Victorian era Morton brings the various stories vividly to life on the page. Who is the clockmaker’s daughter and how did she come to linger at Birchwood Manor? And how will this all help Elodie come to terms with the path that her own life is about to take?

ANIMAL ANTICS: THE LEAPING LION by Lucy Courtenay Brian is an excitable lion cub. His dad is the King of the Savannah, so a lot is expected of him. He tries to be big and intimidating, like his dad. There is one thing that Brian loves doing more than anything else and that is playing leapfrog. He is the best in the savannah and is always searching for the next big thing to leapfrog over. So, when he tackles his biggest leapfrog ever and fails, he is mortified when all the other animals laugh at him. Humiliated he vows to never leapfrog again. That is, until he learns that the Animal Olympics are going to be held in the savannah and leapfrog is one of the events! Can he pluck up the courage to compete and risk more humiliation? Will he make his dad proud? This lovely short chapter book (92 pages) is perfect for young animal lovers, combining animal facts – such as the fact that female lions do most of the hunting – with a fun story. Who knows, maybe lions really ARE good at leapfrog? 62

THE TESTAMENTS by Margaret Atwood Coming 30 years after her best selling The Handmaid’s Tale, readers certainly had a long wait for this sequel. The success of the recent television series has certainly brought in new fans, anxious to know what happens next. For those not familiar, the original novel told the story of America in the not so distant future where a totalitarian state has been established in the east of the country after a civil war. Women’s rights have been taken away from them and are subjugated in this patriarchal society. This sequel tells us what happened next from the perspective of three women: Aunt Lydia, familiar to readers from the first novel, Agnes, a young woman living in Gilead, and Daisy, a young woman living in Canada. Here we learn something of how Gilead came to be in flash back accounts from Aunt Lydia, how the outside world sees Gilead, and the life-changing decisions that are made for young girls in Gilead by society. As a fan of the original I found this to be a gripping read that did not detract from the power of the 1985 novel. Is it a satisfying ending? Is everything resolved with the end of Gilead? That would be telling too much, and I’ll leave it up to you to make that discovery.

THEATRE SHOES by Noel Streatfield If you have a child who loves to perform – dancing, singing, acting – then this is the book for them! Noel Streatfield is best known for her novel Ballet Shoes and this one is often overlooked. Originally published as Curtain Up this follows the story of Sorrel, Holly, and Mark. After the death of their mother, and the disappearance of their father whilst serving in the Navy, the siblings are sent to wartime London to stay with their grandmother who they have never met. They find themselves in a world they have never experienced as they discover that their grandmother (and their mother) used to be a famous actress. She seems keen that the children follow in the family tradition, even though they have no experience, and they find themselves enrolled at Madame Fidolia’s Academy of Dancing and Stage training. Sorrel soon discovers a passion for performing, starring as Ariel in a production of The Tempest. Mark is determined to join the Navy like his father - despite being a talented singer – whilst Holly, shines at dancing. Ultimately this story is about coming to terms with loss and discovering an extended family, albeit with the smell of the greasepaint and a pirouette or two.
