Also appearing at Tynemouth Fake Festival for the first time – The Four Fighters – who promise to deliver a faithful tribute to one of America’s biggest selling rock bands. Lead singer Iain Angus (aka Dave Grohl) says, “We’ve been with the Fake Festival tour since it started 10 years ago, and we’re still blown away with the party atmosphere and crowd participation at the events.” “After 20 years in the business and a massive worldwide tour last year – The Foo Fighters have given us so much great music to perform we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to putting our Fake Festival set lists together!” We’ve also spent months scouting the very best local bands to perform throughout the afternoon – and this year we think we’ve secured a line-up to ‘rock

FOOTBALL ACADEMY LOOKING FOR POTENTIAL NEW RECRUITS TALENTED young footballers from across Tyneside and Northumberland are being invited to take part in free, open trials in the Easter holidays AND the chance to earn a place at at an elite school Football Academy.

Monkseaton High School will begin extending its Football Academy into Year 9 this September, and will hold the trials on school pitches on FRIDAY, APRIL 1 and FRIDAY, APRIL 8 in the school holidays as it looks for potential new recruits. Both sessions are being held between 1pm-3pm on the school playing fields, and the school is planning activities to make prospective students and parents feel welcome, with young players invited from across the region to take part and see the school. The specific age range being looked as is current year 8's who will go into Year 9 in September. Improtech Soccer is the coaching company that has enjoyed great success in its pioneering school Football Academy at Houghton Kepier on Wearside with a steady stream of pupils improving to the point where they have been taken on by Newcastle United, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool Football Academies. And Improtech now wants to find the same success stories among Tyneside's budding footballers, as it has done on Wearside. Former Premier League footballer Martin Scott, founder of Improtech, told abc: "We're really excited about the Easter holiday trials. "We've already held one set of free, open trials from which we've found the first members of what will be the Year 9 intake. "But we hope word is getting around more and more now and that in the Easter trials we'll be able to see a lot more young players with potential that we can develop to the point where they have a chance of becoming a professional footballer." 10

Improtech stands apart from many other soccer schools in that it focuses on the elite performer - top quality young potential that can be developed through focused and tailored training and guidance to develop technically gifted players. "We word towards a five-year programme," said Scott, one of only 200 holders of the famously elite UEFA Pro coaching licence in the whole of the UK: "and during that time, each player is a personal project to us. "We make a personal commitment to each young player but we expect them to make a personal commitment to us in return. "And when we find players who have that commitment and desire, it's amazing how much they can progress through Improtech." Improtech - short for Improve Technique - is based around the concept that meaningful and directed practice under the guidance of supportive and skilled coaches over the course of time produces the best results. For Improtech's big step across to Tyneside, Scott reckons he could hardly have found a better 'fit' than Monkseaton High School in Whitley Bay's Seatonville Road. "It's a pleasure for us to be associated with a school that is so clearly going in the right direction," said Scott. "But it's important to us too because

Improtech isn't solely about turning out improved and gifted footballers - we also want to see them develop academically too. "At Kepier, academic grades have also improved alongside the football side of things and that's what we want to see happen in all schools Improtech is involved in." The open trials in April will specifically be looking for talented youngsters in the Year 8 age-range - anyone between 12 and 13 moving into Year 9 later in the year. The school is on Seatonville Road, Whitley Bay, NE25 9EQ. Players are asked to bring FG and SG boots. To reserve your place on either session, free of charge, please contact Improtech's Simon Robson at simon@improtechsoccer.com or call 07717 707 952. NEWS

FROM NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE

NORTH SHIELDS TOWN TRAIL LAUNCHED The Chamber were pleased to be the lead organisation working with a range of partners including North Tyneside Council, the Beacon Centre, the Linskill Centre, The Old Low Light, Northumberland Park, Christ Church Primary School and Queen Alexander 6th Form College to set up the North Shields Town Trail. The new town trail route was launched to showcase the heritage of North Shields – from the vibrant centre, to the beautiful green haven of Northumberland Park and the historic Fish Quay. North Tyneside Council’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn, was joined by guests to mark the occasion, and enjoy a walk around the trail. The circular walk, which is just over two and a half miles long, takes you on a journey of discovery through the town. Beginning and ending at the Beacon Centre, it passes through the town centre and takes in the Linskill Centre and Memorial Garden, Northumberland Park, the Old Low Light and the Fish Quay. It is hoped that the new town trail will enable people to find out about North Shield’s rich history, as well as encouraging more people into the town. The walk trail 14

is available from North Shields Library, Linskill Centre, Glasshouse Tea Rooms and the Old Low Light Centre. It is also available to download at www.northshieldstrail.org Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “North Shields is rich in heritage, and this trail route will help people to explore and discover some of the town’s wonderful characteristics. It’s fantastic for visitors, and I’m sure many residents in the area will also discover something new about their town. Particularly as we get into the spring and summer months, I’d encourage people to take part in the trail and enjoy all North Shields has to offer.” David Bavaird Chamber Chair said ’‘A number of members of the Chamber had the idea to celebrate our town’s rich heritage by creating a town trail. We quickly found that the idea was of real interest to lots of organisations in the town who all worked hard to ensure that the North Shields Town Trail would be opened for the Easter weekend and in preparation for summer months. I would like to thank all who contributed so enthusiastically and quickly. The North Shields Town Trail will be another reason for visitors and residents to visit our town and to help celebrate our rich heritage’.

CHAMBER ATTEND SHOW BIZ EVENT Several Chamber members attended a special event focussed on getting their business fit for 2016 held by the North Tyneside Business Forum at Tynemet on the 18th of March, with keynote speakers and industry experts giving the latest news and perspectives on current business issues. Attendees took part in a series of 10-minute quick fire information sessions from industry experts, giving condensed details on topics including the economic forecast, minimum (& living) wage, workplace pensions and Universal Credit. There was also an opportunity for networking, with around 100 business people from the North Tyneside area with keynote speakers including Lee Gardener, a former Royal Marines Commando, whose keynote talk was titled ‘Elite Performance - Business Lessons from the Battlefield’. The North Tyneside Business Forum is a group managed by local business people from across all sectors, that was set up to encourage and develop business growth in North Tyneside through a shared focus on promoting economic success.

HEALTH

TOP TIPS TO EASE EVERY DAY STRESS By Irene Anderson

O

ur daily lives can be fraught with stress. Deadlines to meet at work, looking after our children, caring for older parents, balancing our finances or even concerns about things that are happening in the world. The list is endless, and can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I have found some simple tweaks that help me get through when I feel overwhelmed. Here are my top tips. 1. BREATHE When you feel the knot of tension or anxiety in the pit of your stomach take 5 deep long breaths. Really expanding the rib cage and breath in as deeply as you can. Then roll the shoulders back 5 times. It is amazing how beneficial this can be, it sends oxygen to the brain and helps relax tense muscles. Always make deep breathing the first thing you do when you feel overwhelmed. 2. CHANGE YOUR STATE By this I mean if you are sitting, get up, stretch, move the body, even get out in the fresh air for a ten minutes’ walk. If you can, put some music on and do a little dance around. If you are at work and can`t leave your desk sit up straight , lift your head and pull the shoulders up to the chin then release. This changing of state can just give a little nudge to the brain and shifts the mood. Getting regular exercise is a wonderful way to reduce stress longer term. Find something you love doing and do it regularly! 3. DITCH THE BITCH One of the greatest causes of anxiety and stress is our internal dialogue. The thoughts about ourselves that constantly go through our minds, things like: I'm too fat, I look horrible, I can`t do this, they won`t like me, why did I get into this mess? On and on and on. We

18

say the most horrible things to ourselves. If you catch yourself doing this STOP. Then change the dialogue to something kinder. Think of your good qualities and traits and Don`t let that internal bitch get you down!! 4. HYDRATE YOURSELF Every organ and system in the body needs water. The truth is many of us are in a constant state of dehydration. When the body is dehydrated we get muscle spasms, neck and shoulder tension, back pain, brain fog and headaches. All of this adds to our general level of stress. Add to this the constant cups of coffee, tea or caffeinated fizzy drinks many of us consume in a day and you increase the dehydration process. Start your morning with some hot water and lemon, then make sure you sip water regularly throughout the day. Try fizzy water, or add some sliced orange, strawberries or cucumber. 5. HAVE SOME QUIET TIME Our days can be one mad rush, from getting up till going to bed. We are plugged into computers or mobile phones, answering emails, checking Facebook, tweeting or texting virtually all day long. But we need time to be still, to have a bit of peace and quiet. Without some `down time ` anxiety and stress levels can go through the roof. So find a few minutes in your day to sit quietly and focus on that deep breathing. Buy one of the lovely colouring books for adults or listen to some peaceful music with all your appliances out of the room. You could even go for a gentle stroll near trees or in a park and focus on the sights and sounds. Why not give these a go, and become a stress buster!

HEALTH

RECOGNISING MENINGITIS IN CHILDREN Meningitis is a hot topic in the media at the moment and the very word sends a shiver down every parent’s spine! While the MenB vaccine debate rages on, it's important to make sure we would all recognise the symptoms of this heartbreaking illness. By Jill Santonastaso, Paediatric First Aid Instructor, www.daisyfirstaid.com

M

eningitis is an inflammation of the protective linings surrounding the brain and spinal cord, which is caused by bacterial or viral infections. Bacterial meningitis is very serious and should be treated as a medical emergency. Early treatment with hospital antibiotics is vital.

moment in time, as soon as anything changes, anything gets worse or there are any new symptoms, then a new assessment is required.

The main symptom most people associate with bacterial meningitis is the rash. The rash we all fearfully look out for whenever our child is unwell. This rash is characterised by bleeding or bruising under the skin, it could be little pinpricks, spots or blotches, anywhere on the body. It could look red, blue, purple or brown and won't fade or change colour under pressure. This rash however, can be a late sign and doesn't always occur, don’t wait for a rash to develop before you get help!

The stiff neck and dislike of bright lights symptoms can often be rare and are less common in babies and toddlers. They may have limb, joint and muscle pain, they are likely to be irritable when picked up, may refuse to feed, may have a high-pitched or moaning cry. Other symptoms could include, pale or mottled skin, cold hands and feet, shivering, breathing fast or becoming breathless, confusion, becoming delirious or fitting. Babies could become lifeless, limp and floppy, too sleepy to wake up and the soft spot on their head may become tense or buldging.

So other than the rash, which symptoms should we be looking out for? A recent study showed that 50% of children with meningitis were initially sent home by their GP as some of the signs of meningitis like fever, vomiting, severe headache and being very sleepy can unfortunately be mistaken for other common, less serious infections. A child with bacterial meningitis however, will often deteriorate rapidly. It is vital to seek help again if the child gets worse! One thing I always stress to parents and carers attending my class is that a medical assessment is only valid for the symptoms presenting at that 20

Be persistent! Trust your instincts! Never be afraid to speak up and seek a second opinion.

The symptoms can appear in any order! Not everyone gets all of these symptoms! Do not wait for all the signs and symptoms to appear, time is critical! Seek urgent medical advice early if you suspect meningitis is developing! If medical advice is not available go straight to the nearest emergency department. If the rash is present, call 999 for emergency help! For more information see www.meningitis.org

Ready Thready Sew!

In this high-speed world it is more important than ever to find time to relax, de-stress and indulge in a little 'me-time'. Taking up an absorbing hobby is an ideal way to calm and refresh an overtaxed mind or body. One such hobby is needlecraft, which encompasses sewing, stitching, Cross Stitch etc. With this in mind, ABC has found the perfect place to supply all your requirements, whether you want to take up stitching and sewing as a hobby, or have some experience in these areas and want to learn new skills.

R

eady, Thready, Sew' is a brand new craft shop which opened in the heart of North Shields in December 2015. It is owned and run by Ingrid Smith, who has a fascinating background in sewing.

Ingrid was born in Holland where her Grandmother owned the sewing school at which her mother taught. From a young age her mother and grandmother taught her how to sew and embroider, and Ingrid pursued her love of fashion, sewing and textiles at college. (She even took extra lessons outside the usual curriculum, as in Holland you need a diploma to start your own business (a dream Ingrid had from a young age.) This was still not enough to satisfy Ingrid's eagerness to learn, as she wanted to know all there was to know about sewing and embroidery. She took an extra course every Saturday, in addition to her college courses, to be able to start her own sewing school. Every exam she passed took up to two years study, and she learned a whole range of new techniques. Ingrid passed four exams, and was working towards others, when love intervened and she met her husband-to-be. After their marriage they decided to move to England, his home country. After living and working for 22 years in England, Ingrid never lost her passion for craft and last year, after taking voluntary redundancy, she finally made her dream of owning her own craft shop come true. The shop had its Grand Opening Day on the 9th of January, and Ingrid invited Stuart Hillard (who appeared on the first season of the Great British Sewing Bee) to do the honours. Stuart spent the whole day in the shop, talking to customers, helping them select fabrics, signing copies of his books and, at one point, Ingrid even had him behind the counter helping to serve people! Ingrid told us 'Stuart was such a lovely and honest person to meet, and gave me plenty of ideas and tips on how to grow my business.' The shop is a fantastic new addition to the town, selling fabrics for sewing, crafting and quilting and it has a good stock of Makower, Lewis & Irene and Hubble & Rose quilting fabrics. The shop is also home to a large Haberdashery section, Embroidery supplies, and Pixel Hobby, a new craft from Ingrid's homeland of Holland. Pixel Craft has already taken off in London but is still quite new to the North East. It is a little bit like embroidery but without needle and thread. It involves sticking small plastic squares onto a plastic base

plate with small pegs, following a paper pattern. By the time you have finished you should have a lovely detailed picture. LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

THE WYE AYE PIE MAN COMES TO NORTH SHIELDS Whether you're 'Not that hungry' or 'If Ya Clammin' The Pie Shop has arrived in North Shields serving an extensive range of fresh locally sourced traditional British pies.

T

he original 'Pie Shop' opened three years ago in the West End of Newcastle, and has gone from strength to strength. Customers have been showing their approval by returning again and again and the growing, glowing reputation meant that new customers soon became regulars. Building on the success of the first shop, the owners decided to branch out and so, at the beginning of February 2016, they opened their new premises on West Percy Street (opposite the Terminus Club) in North Shields. The shop itself has been tastefully redecorated, and provides a pleasant environment whether you come to collect an order, make a selection to eat out or prefer to hop on a bar stool and demolish the food on the premises. You can make your choice from a great range of Pies and Meal Deals, the names of which reflect the Geordie dialect. The range of 'WOR PIES' include classics such as Mince and Onion, Steak and Kidney, Just Steak and Corned Beef and Potato. The pies can be accompanied by homemade mash, home-cooked mushy peas, beans and delicious gravy. 'WOR DINNERS' consist of 1 x pie, 2 x scoops of homemade mash, home-cooked mushy peas or beans and gravy. For those of you with BIG appetites you can order an extra-large helping entitled "IF YA CLAMMIN". However, for smaller options you can go for the "NOT THAT HUNGRY" or the uniquely named "IF YA A BAIRN".

The owners have spent a lot of time sourcing the very best pies from a variety of local suppliers, and the criteria they use are taste and quality. The tasty, creamy mash is freshly made on the premises, and the mushy peas are prepared in a tried and tested way (like Grandma used to do!). They are prepared using the 'steepy pea' method where they are part-boiled, left overnight and the cooking is completed the next day. The hard work and excellent products resulted in The Pie Shop getting into the final seven of the Newcastle Councils Small Business Award from a list of hundreds of nominations. They were also recently voted into the top three 'Best Places' to buy pies by the readers of the Newcastle Evening Chronicle – a fantastic achievement having bested some well-established and bigger companies. For those who don't feel like queueing, simply phone in your order, then you can collect and enjoy back at home. This is a very welcome addition to the town, and something that bit different to the other eateries in North Shields. The Pie Shop pride themselves on delivering high quality food at affordable prices, a combination they have mastered over the last few years, and one that is sure to be a hit in North Shields too! The shop is open 9.30am – 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Pie Shop, 63 - 65 West Percy Street, North Shields, NE29 0DJ. Tel: 07597134259

NORHAM DONATIONS BRING SOME WARMTH TO WINTER

S

taff and pupils at Norham High School in North Shields rose to the challenge when they heard about vulnerable people in need of help over winter. After learning about the North Tyneside Winter Support Network at a recent assembly, the school pledged to collect donations of food and items to help keep people safe and warm during the colder months. The Winter Support Network is a group of five North Tyneside charities who have been working together to make winter safer for the borough’s older and most vulnerable residents, by providing advice and practical support as well as equipment and food to people in need. Reaching out to the local community to help, the Network was delighted to receive support from Norham High School and its pupils, who donated a range of items including hot water bottles, packet soup, thermal blankets, scarves and thermal socks. Ian Dougall form North Tyneside VODA, who collected the donations on behalf of the Winter Support Network, said: “Norham High School’s collection will make a real difference to vulnerable local people in the cold weather. The people we work with are so grateful for the practical support and ‘Keep Warm’ packs they receive – it really does make a positive difference to people’s lives. We are really keen to involve the wider community in helping the Network to be effective. This can range from people pledging to be a good neighbour and telling people who might benefit

30

about it, to helping us purchase essential items – the support from Norham is a perfect example of how local people can get involved.” David Baldwin, Executive Headteacher at Norham High School, added: “Norham High School was proud to be involved in such a worthy cause. Our pupils were especially motivated by the fact that their efforts would go directly to help people in their local community, and that really inspired them to do the very best they could. It is great to know how much of a difference our students have made locally.” One recent recipient of a Keep Warm pack was Mrs Todd from Battle Hill who said: “I’m over the moon with my pack – getting it was like getting a late Christmas present.” The organisations making up the Network are North Tyneside VODA, Tyne Gateway Trust, Key Enterprises, Meadow Well Connected and Age UK North Tyneside. Supported by North Tyneside’s Clinical Commissioning Group, the Winter Support Network aims to tackle some of the causes of ill health and physical injuries that occur more frequently in winter, as well as alleviate loneliness and isolation that can occur at this time of year. For more information contact VODA on 0191 643 2626 or visit www.voda.org.uk.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY … BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT

Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

Mister Woods Coffee in North Shields has recently undergone another very fine refurbishment. Owner Steven Smallwood said “We thought it was the right time to bring all of our coffee shops up to the WOODS COFFEE brand and standard our customers have come to expect. This meant closing our North Shields branch for one week, in order to do a speedy seven day renovation to ensure minimum disruption while the branch had it’s makeover.” “We are very happy with the outcome” Steven continued. “We have introduced our standard rustic industrial look, including recycled goods such as old lights, wood, and old wooden crates.” The old bright office style lighting has been replaced with custom made industrial style fittings, with warm vintage style bulbs giving off an ambient glow of warmth and cosiness. The menu board has been made bigger, and lit with old warehouse floodlights, bordered with brick style white tiles to give a bright fresh look. Nothing has changed on the menu though, the coffee house will still serve all your favourite cakes, sandwiches, soup, hot chocolate and their own unique blend of Woods Coffee. Also still on offer are their breakfast deals on bacon/sausage stotties with tea or coffee, and the popular daily soup/sandwich deals, as well as the afternoon specials on cake n’ coffee. “We are already receiving amazing feedback from our customers,” Steven said, “Everyone seems to love it, even though it takes a bit of getting used to after the old look.” If you haven’t already been, you must call in when next visiting North Shields, we are sure you’ll love it too!

HIGHEST QUALITY CARE: Judy Mattison is the home manager for the new Wallsend development

40

The Latest Innovation In Dementia Care A dementia diagnosis can be a worrying time for all concerned but now a new £6.2 million specialist facility is opening in Wallsend to provide the highest quality care.

E

othen Homes is a Christian charity with a proven track record in providing excellent residential care for the elderly. Its new ground breaking development aims to provide a ‘family home’ environment offering all sorts of engaging activities, including a sensory garden and aviary, as well as independent living apartments. A different model of care Eothen’s new Wallsend development offers a groundbreaking model of care, in which each person’s quality of life is the over-riding priority, taking precedence over structured processes and schedules. The focus is on independence and wellbeing through a relationshipcentred style of support involving the person with dementia, their family and friends. At Wallsend, daily life is not made up of routine and tasks but is just like home, where residents can get up when they want, eat where and when they want, and make drinks and snacks at leisure, with staff interacting and on hand as necessary. Developed with specialist training organisation Dementia Care Matters, this type of care is known as the ‘butterfly approach’ because it constantly adapts to what the individual needs, just as a butterfly adapts to changing circumstances throughout its life. Designed to make living pleasurable The planning behind Eothen’s new home shows why it is the first of its kind here in the North East and beyond. A key component of this is freedom, security and space. Designed using the latest research into the needs of elderly residents and people living with dementia, this innovative home is inspired by the pioneering Hogewey Village concept in The Netherlands, which has been hugely successful and attracts global recognition for the care provided. In Wallsend, four households provide accommodation for 13 people and each one has its own kitchen, dining and lounge area to encourage everyone to live a life as close as possible to the one they did before. Bedrooms are large and open plan.

GROUND BREAKING DEVELOPMENT: Artists impression of the new home in Wallsend

Reminiscence areas include an external space featuring an old-style touring caravan to evoke memories of holidays and fun times. A sensory garden will soon feature birds, animals and plants for residents to enjoy. All of Eothen’s homes have strong relationships with churches in the community, allowing them to cater for all denominations. Wallsend has its own chapel on site for residents and their families to use whenever they wish. Independent living This new development from Eothen Homes also offers one bedroom flats which are available to rent for people over 65 who wish to live independently. These apartments are open to all but particularly ideal for spouses who have family members living in the home. Eothen is different Eothen was established in 1950 to provide Christian care for the elderly and, as a charity, it is governed by a board of Trustees who ensure each home creates a nurturing environment in which residents come first. The majority of Eothen’s business comes from personal recommendation thanks to the quality and consistency of care and its focus on ensuring that all residents are

settled, healthy and happy.

Eothen’s new Wallsend home opens in April 2016. If you’d like to find out more or book a visit, please call 0191 281 9100 or email enquiries@eothenhomes.org.uk. 41

RECIPE

Cauliflower Cheese & Smoked Bacon Tart In this dish the classic combination of cauliflower and cheese is taken up a notch with the addition of smoky bacon and a pastry crust.

Serves: 6 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes Ingredients: • Plain flour, for dusting • 1 pack readymade short crust pastry greaseproof paper • 1 small cauliflower, broken into small florets • 4 rashers smoked bacon, roughly chopped • 1 onion, diced • 3 eggs, beaten • 500ml crème fraiche • Small bunch chives, chopped • 100g grated Cheddar • Salt and pepper • Dried beans or ceramic beans to weigh down the pastry 44

Method: 1. Preheat to oven to 170°C, 325°F or gas mark 3. 2. On a floured surface roll the pastry to the thickness of a pound coin and line a 23cm loose bottomed flan tin, gently pushing the pastry into the corners and trimming off the excess. 3. Line the pastry with greaseproof paper and weight it down with dried beans or ceramic beans, cook for 15 minutes then remove the beans and greaseproof and cook for a further 8 minutes or until the pastry is pale golden. 4. In a pan of boiling water simmer the cauliflower for 5 minutes until it starts to soften, then drain and set aside.

5.

6. 7. 8. 9.

10.

In a frying pan cook the bacon until brown and crisp, remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Turn the heat down and gently cook the onion in the same pan for 3 to 4 minutes until soft. Tip the cauliflower, bacon and onion into the pastry shell so they are fairly evenly distributed. In a bowl combine the eggs, crème fraiche, chives and half the cheese and season to taste. Pour the egg mixture into the pastry case and top with the remaining cheese. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and it’s cooked through with just a slight wobble in the centre. Serve warm or cold.

VISIT OLD LOW LIGHT HERITAGE CENTRE TIME AFTER TIME

W

hether its Cops and Robbers or model trawlers, or wildlife and war stories; Old Low Light within Clifford’s Fort is the perfect place for a family visit to North Shields Fish Quay.

With a packed programme of spring and summer events including walk, talks, music, new classes, exhibitions and events, as well as River Tyne Cruises and visits to the majestic Tall Ships in Blyth to look forward to, there are plenty of reasons to visit the Old Low Light Heritage Centre this coming spring and summer. Family fun doesn’t have to mean lunch boxes and wet weekends, the treasures of the North East coast can be explored with our complimentary trails. Regular walks such as our ‘Shipwrecks and Survivors’ mean the whole family can enjoy the heritage of the Fish Quay whatever their age. For time-travellers aged up to 4 years, we have a new ‘Kiddies pre-school’ Yoga Class starting in April. The Old Low Light’s unique setting over-looking the mouth of the Tyne means our enclosed space is perfect for when your small fry are keen to run around or spooky monster crime scene. Organised craft activities are on offer throughout school holidays including drawing, story-telling, craft and hands-on workshops such as during Saint George’s Day and National Archaeology Week happening in July. Fisher-girls and heroic rescuers are invited to open up our dressing-up box and wander our Heritage Gallery looking for adventure. There is always some salty seadog on hand to tell of their fascinating stories about life at sea. When the sun comes out we have lots of out-door events planned. Shipmates can dress up their pooch and put their best paw forward for our very first Family Fun Dog Show on 05 June. We will also providing our own Mouth of the Tyne Fringe Event with traditional skills, crafts and music. And finally, we have some great exhibitions, and live music events lined up. The Old Low Road by local artist Jack Shotton opens 25 March until 17 April, and there is also a new temporary heritage gallery exhibition ‘The Stag Line – A History’ opening in time for Easter. For more information to discover what’s on please visit our website www.oldlowlight.co.uk or call in and say hello over a cup of our delicious Hadaway Harry coffee special roasted for us by Tynemouth Coffee Company. 46

TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR

Dream Kitchen

T

he kitchen is the heart of the home, so it's really no wonder that choosing new cabinetry for your dream cook space can be a highly stressful business. Nowadays, there are so many different styles of doors to choose from that you're likely to find yourself with the c 'lemma of whether to go for an on-trend, modern high-gloss finish or to invest in a timeless Shaker design. When it comes to remodelling your kitchen, cabinets tend to be the biggest expense, taking up to 40% of your overall budget, so you want to make sure you get it right. Careful planning is the key to guaranteeing a kitchen that you'll love. `The final design of your units is one, that you will most likely be living with for many years to come. With a bit of consideration, you'll be well on your way to transforming that kitchen from drab to divine. The most exciting parts of designing’ your new kitchen is choosing the finish and colour palette that you are going to go for. Start off by assessing the size of your room and now much natural light it gets. For bijoux kitchens, cabinetry with a high gloss finish is a great choice as it will reflect light around the room, making the space feel instantly bigger. Try to avoid dark tones, too, as this can cause your kitchen to feel closed in. The latest trend is to mix and match your doors for an eye-catching contemporary look. Alternatively, you could try combining wood-effect and high gloss finishes for a striking individual two-tone effect. Once you’ve decided on the units you want to go for, it’s time for the tricky part of measuring up. If you’ve chosen to do this yourself, make sure you are meticulous with every centimetre as this will ensure that your cabinetry fits perfectly in the space you have. It’s worth using a kitchen planning tool to help you to visualise your area. 48

they come in a wide variety of colours, so you can be as inventive as you like. Alternatively, if you’re looking to go for a more classic, Shaker or country-style kitchen, you can’t beat timbers such as oak or walnut. Although wooden cabinets can be pricey, the biggest benefit is that it can be colour washed, stained or waxed, and if you get bored you can always sand your doors down and repaint them for an instant update. Wood veneers are also great as they’re generally less expensive and more resistant to heat and damp than solid wood, while offering the same appearance. If you’re after the look of timber but don’t want to break the bank, there are lots of fantastic woodeffect laminate styles out there. Laminates come in a wide range of colours and can be made to replicate almost any type of wood plus they are surprisingly durable and long-lasting if you keep them clean and dry. You could try downloading an app such as EZ Kitchen to explore as many layouts as possible, however it is best to leave it to a professional kitchen company. Selecting the most suitable storage solutions and positioning them correctly is also crucial for a kitchen that caters to your individual needs. Think about how frequently you use certain items, such as pans, cutlery and china, and plot their storage in the most convenient spaces in the kitchen. For hard-working kitchens, plastic Iaminates and high-gloss lacquers are hardy and easy to clean, plus

NATIONAL ‘INSPIRATION’ AWARD FOR NORTH TYNESIDE’S EMMA

N

orth Tyneside’s Emma Ramshaw has been announced as the winner of a national award for her work as a team leader on a youth volunteering programme. Emma has been named as the National Citizen Service’s (NCS) Most Inspirational Leader for her role with North Tyneside VODA (Voluntary Organisations Development Agency), where she has been a volunteer mentor since the NCS scheme began in 2011. National Citizen Service (NCS) is a youth volunteering programme that gives 16 and 17-year-olds the chance to build skills and help their community while taking on new challenges and adventures, building confidence and making friends for life. As a Team Leader, Emma has supported, inspired and supported 11 teams, a total of 165 young people. VODA’s Volunteer Centre Manager, Robin Fry, who made the nomination said: “Emma Ramshaw is an inspiration, a role model and a gift. She is the embodiment of the NCS ethos - always up for a challenge, always inspiring others, encouraging people to mix outside of their usual social groups, take on responsibility, impact on the community and understand the difference they have made.” 56

And Emma has done all of this whilst facing challenges of her own. Robin continues: “As a young adult Emma faces a daily battle with her health and well-being. What keeps her going is finding new ways to help others. Whilst overcoming her own fear of heights Emma challenges young people to identify and conquer their own fears - whether physical or mental. Through NCS Emma has become stronger, more confident and more resilient to the challenges she faces.” Delighted to receive the news, Emma said “Being involved in NCS has been an amazing adventure, one that has shaped me into the person I am now. I don't think people will ever truly understand how much volunteering means to me –it saved my life. The best part of supporting young people on NCS is seeing them grow; to see them overcome huge challenges they never believed they could; to see them develop new skills and of course seeing them succeed.” As part of her award, Emma and Robin were invited as special guests to the NCS Yes Live awards ceremony and concert in London in March. For more information about VODA’s NCS programme, contact Robin Fry on 0191 643 2626.

GARDENING

Starting your own Vegetable Patch If you fancy becoming self sufficient and producing your own tasty homegrown vegetables, then here are ten tips for starting your own vegetable patch: Firstly, what do your family eat?

It’s all very well having a beautiful array of beetroot but if you can’t stand eating it, it’ll all go to waste. Always have a think about what your household would utilise best and start from there!

Consider what is likely to thrive best

depending on the month. For example, with the risk of frost being low, more tender vegetables such as courgettes and tomatoes have a better chance to thrive in June.

Involve the family, if your children/partner or housemates have a vested interest in what may end up on their plates, it will always help to have an extra pair of eyes or hands. Do your research! There are several various diseases that can affect your plants and for each one, a quick Google search will bring up several forums of people having the same problem and the things they’ve tried/cures they’ve found. Official websites are great for learning your craft but on a forum you will likely discover a neat trick using common household items. Weed, weed, weed! It’s the most important job, it will give your vegetables space to grow and will ensure there’s no pesky weed taking your crops food, light or water! Having said that, make sure you know the difference between the weeds and the flowering plants. Start small, you don’t need a jungle of potential

dinners the first time you start growing your own vegetables. Start out growing easy to tend vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage or peas. They require minimal effort and once you’ve got the hang of the basics; you’ll be more confident when you come to planting other items.

Don’t have a big garden? Not a problem!

There’s a misconception that you need a huge space 58

to be able to have a vegetable patch. There are several techniques you can learn to make the most out of a small space and even high rise flat dwellers can grow things in a container or pot. And not just herbs; carrots, beetroot, beans and cauliflower are just four examples of foods that can be grown in pots or containers.

Ask your local garden centre for advice.

Internet searching is very handy but sometimes it is nice to chat to someone directly and your local garden centre will have a wealth of information just waiting to be tapped into by talking to the staff.

Keep going. There are things you can grow all throughout the year and many people find once they’ve grown and tasted their own produce, it’s a difficult habit to give up! Summer is not the only time you can benefit from your own hard work and all year gardening is a relaxing, fun and rewarding hobby. Relax! Remember that you can do everything you’re supposed to do and some bad weather, or a lack of abundant growth can be disheartening. But it isn’t your fault and you shouldn’t give up after one bad harvest. Every gardener will tell you that sometimes, for whatever reason, your efforts just don’t bear fruit (or vegetables!).
