KNOTS, NETS & NAUTICAL ADVENTURES This Summer At Old Low Light Heritage Centre
Dig the Festival of Archaeology with guided walks, talks and discover what might be under your feet; or discover a hidden talent with our Mouth of the Tyne Traditional Skills Fringe Festival. A full programme of events for adults and small fry awaits visitors to the Old Low Light Heritage Centre this summer. 6
The Shipyard Painters Exhibition July 22nd – September 18 ‘The Shipyard Painters Exhibition’ will highlight the huge amount of artist talent which existed amongst its thousands of employees from draughtspeople to riveters. Co-produced and curated by Old Low Light volunteers and Tynemouth Fine Art, the exhibition will draw on private and public collections to explore the works of art created by employees of the Tyne’s famous shipyards. Swan Hunter is synonymous today with shipbuilding, but amid the company’s sometimes turbulent past the yard produced lots of creative innovations. From July 22nd – September 18, visitors
COMMUNITY
to the Old Low Light will be able to discover that ships were not the only crafts produced at the Swan Hunter yard. The shipyards of the Tyne, such as Swan Hunter and Hawthorn Leslie, are renowned for the technical expertise involved in designing and building some of the world’s largest and most famous ships - including RMS Mauretania, HMS Newcastle, HMS Ark Royal, Atlantic Conveyor and Esso Northumbria. As a relief from the meticulous detail of the drawing office and the precision engineering of ship fabrication, a wealth of original art was created in their leisure time by some of the artistically talented men and women who worked in the shipyards. Paintings by employees of the yards were shown at occasional exhibitions organised by an informal Swan Hunter Artists Group in the 1970s and 1980s, but most of their work is little known outside the local area. Our ‘Alpha Omega: Beginning and End’ Exhibition’ by local photographers The Swan Snappers will be complementing The Shipyard Painters with twenty four images creatively documenting the beginning and end of Swan Hunter’s hey days To accompany the exhibition there will be lots of hands-on family activities, talks and outreach events throughout the summer.
‘Docks and Robbers’ a lighthearted interpretation of life on North Shields Fish Quay will be on display throughout the summer in our Heritage Gallery. The exhibition which will be curated by volunteers and retired members of the maritime police, will illustrate some of the hidden stories of life on the Fish Quay and river. Local historian and author Charlie Steel will be giving a talk on Tynemouth’s House of Correction as part of this exhibition at 11:00 on 16 July. Dig It: Celebrating Festival of Archaeology 15 – 16 July Join us during the Festival of Archaeology, and dig for treasure. Archaeology gives us that tangible link to the past, showing us how our ancestors lived, and what everyday life was like for the communities who lived along the river. Bring the family along and learn how to did, identify and clean and catalogue artefacts. Let’s see if the sea has left any treasure on the beach and discover the secrets of Clifford’s Fort. We will also be joined by Dr David Petts from Durham University on 23 July at 11:00 who will be talking about recent coastal discoveries which are being unearthed along the coast. David will also be encouraging you to pick up a trowel and get involved in some of the community digs happening around the region.
Mouth of the Tyne Fringe Event: Traditional Skills and Music Festival 09 July The Festival is in collaboration with North of England Civic Trust, whom for several years held a similar event at Tynemouth Station. The day will be shared with lots of local musicians including the Mouth of The Tyne Choir. The festival begins on Friday 08 July with Kirsty Bromley and Lucy Wise and their ‘Two Hemispheres Tour. This concert of two travelling songstresses from Australia and Sheffield has its roots in Celtic, American and English Folk music and we are pleased they have chosen Old Low Light to give their only ‘Up Close and Personal’ gig of the tour. Tickets are available from Old Low Light and cost £10 A fantastic opportunity to discover the skills and crafts used to develop and maintain North Shields’ Fish Quay. The festival is in collaboration with North of England Civic Trust, and will be shared with lots of local musicians including the fabulous Mouth of the Tyne Choir. Local artisans will be sharing and demonstrating a huge range of traditional skills from rug and leather making, to wood turning and knot splicing. www.oldlowlight.co.uk 7

THINGS ARE
CHANGING AT NORHAM HIGH SCHOOL
Norham pupils wow employers at their recent careers event
Pupils ‘Wow’ Local Employers Norham High School pupils have received glowing praise from employers, following a careers showcase at their school. The ‘World of Work’ (WoW) event gave Year 10 pupils the chance to meet local and national employers and grill them about their jobs. Organisations taking part included Tyne North Training, Barnardos, the RAF, Northumbria Police, Northumbrian Water, Durasic, Capita, Wolf IT, HMRC, VODA, Kirkley Hall, Sunderland University and many more.
Becky Rowe from the Phoenix Detached Youth Project said: “We thought the students were excellent ambassadors for Norham High School as they were polite and well prepared. Many of them were confident to ask questions that weren't ones they'd previously planned to ask. The morning was well organised and the students appeared to get a lot out of it.” And employers who came along from Kirkley Hall added: “The students were very polite and made us feel very welcome. It is an excellent idea to give students the chance to speak to people about different careers available when they move on from full time education and also to discuss some of the courses and apprenticeships on offer that could help them to realise their dreams.” The showcase was such a success that Norham High School is planning another event later this year, which will be jointly held with Churchill Community College at The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields and involve even more students and employers.
Pupils Are First Class When It Comes To Attendance Norham High School pupils simply love coming to school - which is why the school’s attendance rates 14
Bethany Saint, Megan Towns and Louise Robertson receive their IGCSE certificates from KS4 Progress Leader Darin Lamb
Almost two thirds of "pupils achieved A*- C grades, putting them above the national average.
"
are well above the national average By the end of this year’s fourth half term, the school achieved overall 96 percent attendance, with 91 individual pupils achieving 100 percent attendance. Executive Headteacher David Baldwin said: “This is a great achievement for pupils and they should all be very proud of their dedication and commitment to learning. Each and every school day is valuable and we work hard to make sure that pupils look forward to coming to school and want to work hard. These latest attendance figures are a testament to this.”
GCSEs Are In The Bag Year 11 pupils at Norham High School sat their IGCSE (International GCSE) English Language exams early this year, with a fantastic success rate. A total of 22 pupils took the exam, with 83 percent achieving their target grade and 44 percent exceeding their target. And almost two thirds (64 percent) of the pupils achieved A*-C grades, putting them above the national average. It is the first time in the history of the school that pupils have had this success with this qualification, and it has given them hunger for even
greater achievements. Ten pupils have also gained a GCSE-equivalent qualification in IT, with above-target performances in their European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) exams. David Baldwin, Executive Headteacher at Norham High School, said: “We are extremely proud of our pupils' GCSE achievements already. Our staff and pupils put a great deal of time and dedication into the early entry and as a consequence the pupils have made exceptional progress and attained some excellent results. “With these results already under their belts, the sky’s the limit for Year 11 in their GCSE exams and everyone at the school is right behind them.” Bethany Saint, one of the students who sat her IGCSE English exam early, said “I’m really pleased with my result because I have achieved three grades higher than my target grade. It proves that all that hard work is worth it and I feel confident in being able to achieve high grades in my other subjects.” The pupils were supported towards their success through extra revision classes, holiday sessions and staying back in school for an additional hour each day. All Year 11 pupils at Norham High School were offered extra support in the run up to this summer’s GCSE exams, including ‘exam survival kits’ containing treats, tools and motivational tips. 15

NEW CHOIR FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T SING Yes you read it correctly a brand new Social Singing project is about to be launched and it’s aimed at all those people who love to sing BUT who have been told by others or who believe themselves that they can’t sing.
WHY START A CHOIR FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN’T SING?
Firstly Irene Anderson and Paul MacDermott, who will be running the choir believe that EVERYONE can sing given some basic skills, practise and a lot of encouragement. Singing is SO good for you. It helps with breathing, posture, confidence, makes you feel happier and singing in a group helps develop friendship and camaraderie. Singing is not just for the chosen few who can read music or who have had their voice trained, everyone should feel the joy that belting out a great song can bring.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM THE CHOIR?
A very warm, friendly environment with no judgement, no auditions and no expectations of any previous knowledge of music. Learning great, toe tapping, popular songs taught in a way that anyone will be able to quickly learn. Lots of laughter, fun, encouragement and support. Nobody giving a hoot how your voice sounds because everyone is in the same boat .
ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?
Irene and Paul already run Linskill Community Choir consisting mainly of people who had never sung before, and have held several workshops for ‘non-singers’ They know how nervous people can feel but also have seen the real difference singing in a choir can make to all they have worked with. You will be in safe hands!
NOW is the time to make a change, join us in the choir that can’t sing and let’s see what we can achieve together. So are you ready? Maybe you can’t sing but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t sing.

HEALTH
TOP TIPS FOR FEELING
HAPPIER Happiness, something we are all striving for, but which often seems to elude our daily lives and we can often be left feeling that we are just ” getting by” day to day rather than feeling a real sense of happiness and joy. Is there a way to change that? Can we be happier whilst still dealing with all that life throws at us? Irene Anderson explains a few small changes that she found helpful in bringing about a greater sense of happiness in her life
BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE GOT
YES, may sound crazy if you are feeling frustrated by your life at the moment BUT, taking time every day to be really grateful for what you already have, makes a HUGE difference in how you feel about your life. Start with the smallest of things. You have a comfortable bed to sleep in, food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over your head. What else are you grateful for in your life? Try keeping a gratitude diary for a few weeks and see how you feel. Acknowledging and being grateful for what you have already is the first step in feeling happier.
STOP WAITING TILL EVERYTHING IS PERFECT
So many of us use the phrase, “I'll be happy when “as in, I`ll be happy when I have lost weight, got a new job, when the kids are older, when I`ve retired, when I'm making more money. Each phase and time in life has its own problems and, if we look for them, its own joys. Accept that nothing is ever perfect and enjoy what you have in the moment. Here`s the truth, there will never be a” perfect time “so you may as well decide to enjoy the point you are at. There is a wise saying, “happiness is a journey, not a destination.” Make the most of the journey.
DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS
There will always be someone cleverer than us, richer than us , better looking than us, but constantly comparing yourself to others and envying their life is a sure fire way to make yourself feel down in the dumps. We never really know what is going on in the lives of other people and even those who may appear to have a perfect life will undoubtedly have their own 22
struggles. That is what being human all is about. SO, instead of comparing yourself unfavourably with others, make a list of what is special and unique about YOU and what you bring to the world. Are you a great friend, wife, husband, parent? What is it about you that others appreciate, enjoy and love? Become your own cheer leader.
MOVE ON
Don’t become a hostage to your past by always reviewing and reliving your mistakes. Don`t remind yourself of what should have, could have or would have been. Release it and let it go, we all make mistakes, learn from it and MOVE ON.
CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY
Make a decision each morning to be happy. (This one may take a bit of practise) BUT our thoughts about things are what determines how happy we are. Look for the lovely things each day brings, try and make someone else`s day better by paying them a compliment or doing something for them. Practise being the one who has something positive to say. Challenge yourself to find the good in the world. Start your day spending a few moments breathing deeply and visualising yourself being able to deal with everything that comes your way. If you make a mistake forgive yourself and move on and do the same for others. Small things done regularly make big changes. Try out these tips and catch yourself feeling happier for no reason.
Linskill Community Choir presents

NORHAM PUPILS PROVE AGE IS NO BARRIER TO FRIENDSHIP
F
riendship has blossomed between pupils from Norham High School and older residents from North Shields, thanks to special event. The ‘Young at Heart Club’ involves around 30 older people who visit Norham High School each month to spend quality time with pupils. They all meet to enjoy a lunchtime meal, great conversation and fun activities including bingo sessions and a quiz. As well as being a social event, the pupils help their older friends with IT skills, and in return the young people are taught more traditional skills such as knitting and crochet. The Young at Heart Club was the idea of Norham’s School Council, following a really successful Christmas lunch with St Peter’s Church in North Shields. Year 10 pupil Jodie Tuffin, said: “The Young at Heart Club is a fantastic opportunity for our school and our local community to strengthen our links. It’s also a chance for our local older residents to really get to know some of our amazing pupils and break down some of the barriers that older people and young people can sometimes have. “It has been really lovely to see the relationships between us all blossom and strengthen each time the
group meets, we all really look forward to organising it and taking part.” David Baldwin, Executive Headteacher at Norham High School, added: “We’re extremely proud of our pupils and the work they’ve done to reach out to members of our community and build these great friendships. It’s wonderful to welcome our local residents into Norham High School and to know they really enjoy their time spent with us.” Norham High School council members have recently secured £450 from North Tyneside Council’s Young Mayor’s Community Fund to support the club. Young Mayor Kieran Archer said: “Young at Heart has my respect and my congratulations. It’s important that young people contribute to our community and it’s admirable that this group is helping older people and, by doing so, strengthening the bond between young and old.”

TIME FOR TEE?
Living in Northumberland and North Tyneside, we are blessed with a diverse range of good quality golf courses. The region is home to a huge number of courses, including challenging links settings, courses filled with hazards and water features – even venues on the PGA EuroPro Tour list! Here we have selected just a few local courses you may wish to try, courses that are challenging for the experienced golfer, whilst being playable for beginners at the same time:
LEISURE
from Tee to Green, and the 15th which is played over a cove with the Sea from Tee to Green. The Club was founded in 1913 and was originally a 9 hole course until its upgrade to a full 18 holes in 1976. Seahouses has hosted many Northumberland Golf County competition events over the years – testimony to the quality of the course and the facilities. Tel: 01665 720294 Green Fees Starting From: £20.00
BEDLINGTONSHIRE
Bedlingtonshire Golf Club was founded in 1972 by Bedlingtonshire Urban District Council. The Council saw the need for additional sporting facilities in the town, and purchased 127 acres of land (100 acres of which had been opencast mined) from the National Coal Board who restored, landscaped and fenced the site. The course was designed by Frank Penninck. In 2001 the members took over the running of the Club from Wansbeck District Council, and in 2008 purchased the Club outright from the Council. In the last 10 years the Club has invested some £400,000 on course and clubhouse improvements. In 2011 the Club hosted the Northumberland County Championship which is a measure of the progress made by the Club. The course is parkland measuring 6813 yards, par 73, and can prove a real test of golf, particularly in windy conditions. All but three holes were part of the former opencast coal site. A large number of conifer and deciduous trees and shrubs have been planted which have now matured giving beautiful tree lined fairways. The course demands good straight drives and accurate iron play into
tight and bunkered greens. The facilities include generous practice areas for putting, chipping and bunker shots, and a separate practice area for general irons and woods practice. Experienced pro shop staff, excellent catering and a warm welcome awaits you. Tel: 01670 822457 Green Fees Starting From: £13.00
SEAHOUSES
Seahouses Golf Course is one of the traditional Northumberland Golf Courses, with a standard scratch of 68 which, given the links conditions and undulating landscape, is seldom bettered. The course has spectacular views from many tees and greens, and boasts two of the most prestigious par threes in the North of England. The 10th, over a Loch that stretches
WHITLEY BAY
The golf club is situated at the North East Corner of the town, and the course is surrounded to the North and West by rolling fields, with views to the east of the coast and Whitley Bay Lighthouse and visitor centre. The course is widely regarded as one of the finest and often challenging courses of the North East Area due to its undulating fairways, with a dene running through that requires a good drive and carry to successfully negotiate it on several of the holes. The pleasant Clubhouse with welcoming staff and good food ensures visitors will have an enjoyable visit. Tel: 0191 2520180 Green Fees Starting From: £25.00

ALNWICK CASTLE Alnwick Castle Golf Course is a medium size but quite challenging Par 70 parkland course, stretching over 6,200 yards. The course incorporates 4 par three’s, 12 par four’s and 2 par five’s, giving golfers of all abilities an enjoyable round. On top of the stunning views the course offers, the signature hole is affectionately known as the ‘Lang Whang’, where golfers who are willing to take a risk with a huge drive will be rewarded. The course prides in its layout, with the 18 holes stretching over 6,250 yards, and this undulating parkland golf course is ideal for golfers of all abilities. There are many natural hazards, including grasslands and gorse, providing a fantastic test of golf with a mix of
par threes, fours and fives. To add to the spectacular views, Alnwick is also home to a variety of wildlife including Deer, Pheasant, and Northumberland’s specialist, the Red Squirrel. Tel: 01665 602632 Green Fees Starting From: £27.00 PARKLANDS Parklands Golf Club is set on the grounds of the beautiful High Gosforth Park and has seen many changes since it was established in 1966, originally known as the John Jacobs Golf Centre. At the time of opening there was just a driving range, until 1971 when a 9 hole course was opened. The
club and facilities have constantly evolved from this day, and the course is now 18 holes, with the club itself now a complete golfing facility. The club offers a range of golfing facilities which caters for golfers of any age and ability. With a 28 bay driving range, an 18 hole golf course and an 18 hole mini-golf course, Parklands Golf Club has it all. So, whether you fancy brushing up on your teeing off skills at the range, playing a few rounds on the course with friends, or enjoying time with the family for mini-golf fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re looking to take up the game, but don’t know where to start, the club also has qualified instructors on hand for coaching and tuition, plus during the school summer holidays their Junior Academy can prove invaluable. Open to members and nonmembers all year round, and with Newcastle Racecourse set within the High Gosforth Park grounds too, a day out at Parklands Golf Club can make the ideal corporate event too! The American Meat Board
NEW MENU HUGE PORTIONS EXCELLENT QUALITY
Richard Wilson samples the brand new menu at The Hastings in Seaton Deleval
Crispy Breaded Camembert
36
I
t has been just over a year since I last had the pleasure of reviewing the Hastings in Seaton Delaval, which had just been taken over by new owners at the time. Well, having been in charge of the pub for over 12 months, they have really stamped their mark on the venue. The Hastings has quickly gained a reputation for high quality, traditional pub food, and for having an excellent quality and selection of cask ales, real ales, spirits and wines. The new owners have implemented their own ideas, as well as listening to their knowledgeable customer base, and that is good news for food and beverage lovers alike! Foodies will be pleased to know they have just launched their new menu, which has a range of new dishes sprinkled amongst their traditional favourites, whilst their drinks range has been extended to include even more real ales, a good selection of premium spirits, as well as a doubling of the wine list! Hearing they had recently launched their new menu, I thought that was a good enough excuse to pay another visit to the pub, and take an extended leisurely lunch break! The pub is situated on Wheatridge Row, the main road in to Seaton Delaval, meaning it is easy to find, and there is plenty parking right on the doorstep.
FOOD
"...the new menu is a delightful mix of the favourites from the old menu, and a collection of new and exciting additions"
Once inside, we were both very impressed by what is a modern yet homely local pub. The venue is airy with a relaxed laid-back atmosphere, and there is plenty of room for diners and drinkers to mix. The new menu is a delightful mix of the classics and favourites from the old menu, and a collection of new and exciting additions. I was also informed that most dishes are made, where possible, from locally sourced ingredients, which is always nice to see. For my starter I chose the Crispy Breaded Camembert, which was accompanied by a raspberry, chilli jam. The two components were a perfect fusion of flavours, and the jam especially left me wanting more. The Camembert, although strong and surprisingly filling, provided a gorgeously gooey texture which lingered long after the plates had been removed. My wife chose the Grilled Halloumi Bruschetta, served with a lemon and lime hummus and garnish. This dish was a lot more subtle in flavour than mine, but equally tasty. The one thing we both noted about all the dishes at the Hastings, is that the accompaniments and garnishes are very much part of the dish and not, as you will find in many restaurants, an after-thought plonked on the side of the plate. For my main dish I just could not look past the American Meat Board – and boy what a choice I
made! My wife was a little more reserved however, and plumped for the Asian Shredded Chicken Wrap. The chips, as we stated in our first review, certainly were chunky and homemade, and almost stole the show again for both of us! However, as soon as I laid eyes on my main course, I knew I had made the right decision! Alongside the aforementioned chunky chips, the meat platter consists of one HUGE slow roasted barbecue beef rib, hog roast sausages, a generous helping of pulled pork, 4 onion rings and a side of ‘slaw’. I don’t have enough words to sum up the quality of the meat, suffice to say my empty plate, even though the portion size was quite something, was testimony to my thoughts on the dish. My wife thought she had opted for a light lunch, but her portion size was slightly larger than she had anticipated also! But this certainly was not a case of quantity over quality, as I can testify for myself having snuck a bite while she was photographing my dish (my secret is now out!). The wrap was deliciously fresh, and the Asian flavour was subtle with a real depth to it. Chatting to the staff as we let our food digest, they explained the new range of drinks available, and also shared the good news that they have recently achieved the cask marque award. The cask marque scheme is designed to test the quality of the beers and ensure they meet the highest standards. The fact that the Hastings passed with flying colours is not surprising really given the owners passion for serving only the best quality beverages. I was also told that the range of spirits on offer has hugely increased so, as well as the usual branded spirits, they now offer a range of premium spirits – oh, their wine list has also doubled in size! VERDICT – New menu, even better quality! The American Meat Board was the real star of the show and is a must try! HEALTH
Infant Summer Safety By Jill Santonastaso
As the countdown to the summer holidays begins, the warm weather and sunshine bring a buzz of excitement for the imminent BBQ’s, adventures and trips to the seaside that we've all been craving after the long, wet winter! Summer is the perfect time of year for many alfresco family activities, it's also the time of year doctors and medical staff see an increase in the number of patients affected by the heat and sun. Wearing sunscreen and drinking water are a good start but Jill Santonastaso from Daisy First Aid fills us in on what else you can be aware of to help protect your family this summer.
44
Sunburn
Sunburn is probably the first thing we worry about when taking our little ones out on a hot day so of course we slather on the factor 50 and pop their sun hat on! But this is not just restricted to really hot and sunny days. It is often on cloudy days with a slight breeze that we underestimate the strength of the sun while we are outside. Sunburn is often a superficial burn to the outer layer of skin, it will be red, sore and swollen. If it looks raw and blistered, this indicates a partial thickness burn that's damaged 2 or 3 layers of skin. For babies and children, we should seek medical advice for any burn to their delicate skin, as should anyone where the burn covers a large area. This could range from a call to your GP or 111 to visiting a minor injuries unit or emergency department. Any burns to the face, hands, feet, genitals or a circumference burn need hospital treatment. With advice, mild sunburn can
most likely be treat at home. Move the child indoors or to a shaded area and cool the skin with a cool shower or a cool, wet compress or sponge. Never cool the skin with ice. Have the child drink plenty of fluids, ice pops and lollies come in handy here! Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be taken if safe to do so. Gently applying a water based lotion or petroleum jelly will help keep the skin cool and moist. Until the skin has healed, keep it covered and out of direct sunlight. If at any point your child becomes unwell or you have any other concerns, seek medical advice. Severe sunburn can include blistering, swelling, fever and chills. Never burst the blisters, cool as before and cover with cling film. Headaches, vomiting and dizziness could also indicate heatstroke, sunstroke or heat exhaustion so a medical assessment will be required. Severe sunburn can occasionally need hospital treatment with medications and dressings. Of course the easiest way to treat sunburn is to prevent it. Babies under six months should always be kept shaded and out the way of direct sunlight. Children should wear suitable clothing, a hat, a minimum SPF of 15 which includes both UVA and UVB protection and ideally play in the shade from 11am to 3pm. Personally, I always go for a factor 50 on my two. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going out and reapplied regularly. No sunscreen is truly waterproof so where splashing, paddling and swimming are involved, reapply every 1 ½ - 2 hours.
Heat Stroke
Heat Stroke is less common but a very serious condition where the body is no longer able to cool down, the temperature control part of the brain fails along with the ability to sweat. This leads to fevers rising dangerously high above 40°C and requires immediate emergency treatment. Symptoms include a throbbing headache, feeling dizzy, nauseous and vomiting similar to heat exhaustion but may also include fainting, confusion, disorientation, low levels of consciousness and the possibility of a seizure. Skin will looked flushed and will be hot and dry to touch. Move the child to a cool shaded area and call 999/112 for help. Remove clothing and wrap in a cool wet sheet until the temperature returns to normal. Take care not to over cool the child too quickly. As with sunburn, the easiest way to treat heat exhaustion and heat stroke would be prevention. Along with sunscreen, light clothing and shade between 11am and 3pm remember to stay hydrated throughout the day, plenty of cool food and drinks, salads, fruit, ice lollies and a cheeky ice cream will all help! Cooling your skin with a damp cloth or a sprinkle of water is a good idea too. Don't forget to take a peek in the toilet after a wee, if it's darker than normal or you're going less often, it's time to top up your water bottle!
Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion is more likely to affect babies and children. This is the body's reaction to loss of water and salts through excessive sweating and the core body temperate rises above 38*C. Symptoms often occur in the late afternoon or early evening and if left untreated, can quickly lead to heat stroke. Symptoms to look out for include tiredness, weakness, feeling dizzy or faint. Pale clammy skin that feels hot to touch although the child may say they feel cold. Intense thirst, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. As well as racing pulse, headache and decreased urine output. Respond to these symptoms by moving the child to a cool, shaded area. Let them lie down and remove any excessive clothing. Cool skin as mentioned above and offer water or fruit juice to rehydrate. Ideally oral rehydration solutions and isotonic drinks are best as they also replace the lost body salts and aid recovery. Always read the instructions and gain parental consent if treating a child in your care. Always obtain medical advice, even if the child recovers quickly.

DOMESTIC ABUSE THERE IS A WAY OUT
Hindle Campbell can help you
D
omestic Abuse is a hideous crime which shatters lives, often in secret, leaving people feeling vulnerable and trapped. You do not have to be trapped; there is a way out. Shock new figures released by the Crown Prosecution Service show that offences of violence against women and girls continue to increase. The number of convictions for domestic abuse offences is at a record high. Whatever your perception of domestic abuse is, it does not respect geographical lines, gender or social class. It affects men and women and is spread across the full spectrum of society. Many people tend to think domestic abuse is limited to the use of violence and intimidation but it is much more far reaching. The Government definition of domestic abuse is: Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional 50
It is not just violence. Abusive behaviour can involve damaging someone’s self worth, controlling finances, manipulation, preventing someone from having friendships or hobbies, humiliation, making someone feel guilty about what they’re wearing and what they eat. The list goes on. The Government have consulted on creating a new offence of domestic abuse, criminalising coercive and controlling behaviour. Other protective measures have been introduced and the police have additional powers. Most people don’t know where to start and are in fear of contacting agencies and the police for fear of repercussions. Then of course you worry about the practical things: Where will you live? Can you stay in the home? Can you be protected by court orders? How you will receive an income? What about the children? How do I pay for help?
Speaking with a lawyer in complete confidence is the place to start. We can provide all of the answers and information you need so that you can make informed choices without your abusive partner knowing anything about it. You do have options. We can assist you to obtain the necessary orders to protect you and/or your children without your abusive partner knowing in advance if the abuse is particularly serious and we can assist you to plan for all of the practical things in advance of any action being taken. If things are particularly serious, court orders can be obtained the same day. Legal Aid can still be available to assist you regardless of your income We offer a free, no obligation initial appointment for up to 30 minutes where you can receive practical information about all other questions you may have, so get in touch today to make a free appointment with a specialist local lawyer and know your options.
If this affects you and you need to talk to someone in confidence about what you can do to stop the abuse please contact Clare Usher or Amir Assadi now by phone on 0191 296 1777 or by confidential e-mail to lawyer@hindle-campbell. co.uk to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss how we can help you.

8 TIPS FOR CREATING A STRONG PASSWORD P
assword management firm SplashData released their list of the 25 worst passwords of 2015 and in the process, illustrated how many online users share the same or similar, weak passwords. This frightening data shed light on how many people still use out-dated and obvious techniques to protect their details on many websites. With this in mind, and considering the extreme importance of some passwords we use online (banking in particular), One I.T. Support have compiled some handy hints and tips for making your passwords slightly more difficult to hack than '123456' or the old favourite, 'password'. 1 - Length is an advantage, the longer your password, the more difficult it will be to guess, so don't be afraid to choose a lengthy one. Experts advise between 12 and 14 characters, but many sites don't have a maximum character limit so by all means go longer. 2 - If the website requires a number within the password, steer clear of birthdays, addresses, mobile numbers and other such numbers that could be discovered elsewhere. Pick something that you can remember but isn't instantly obvious, the number of houses you've lived in or number of times you've been to a certain holiday destination, whatever number you know that someone else can't guess. 3 - Don't allow your browser to remember your password for you. Although it's easier and more convenient, and constantly requested, should your computer be stolen, every password you have is instantly useless and whoever has the computer now has free access to everything. 4 - Stay away from words on their own. Also avoid obvious substitutions, 'passw0rd' also made it onto the 58
25 Worst Password list even though it combines words and numbers. 5 - Use a different password for each major account, emails, banking, credit cards etc. Again this is insuring yourself from losing everything in one go. 6 - Constructing a password from a sentence can aid your memory recall and yet be nigh impossible to guess, for example the sentence 'I like my tea with two sugars and lots of milk' would become 'Ilmtw2salom', a nice combination of letters, with a number and a capital letter yet nonsense to an outside observer. 7 - Similar to number 6, don't be afraid to create nonsense words or squash bits of several words that make sense to you, together. The first two letters of every month with 31 days would give you the password 'JaMaMaJuAuOcDe' for example. 8 - Or if all else seems impossible, use a Password manager, although you'll still need to remember your password for that! A password manager will store your login information for all the websites you use and help you log into them automatically. They encrypt your password database with a master password – so the master password is the only one you have to remember, and now of course you have tips to help you create a good one! So, hopefully this list will aid you online. Whether you use some of our tips or all of them, your safety and the safety of your data online is the key, so good luck and remember, Cypw&ywgw! (Choose your passwords wisely and you won't go wrong!) If you have any more queries or questions, please get in touch with One I.T. Support Ltd by calling 0191 2960111 or visiting www.oneits.co.uk
