LOCAL NEWS

GLOBAL STARS HEAD TO NORTHUMBERLAND Glastonbury, Leeds Festival, Coachella - now Northumberland has unveiled the line up for its own major music festival launching this summer.

T

he Libertines and Pet Shop Boys will headline Festival on the Wall which is pitching up in a stunning countryside location near Hadrian’s Wall just 12 miles from Newcastle/Gateshead, from Friday 04 August to Sunday 06 August 2017. Pete Doherty, who hails from Hexham, will headline the main stage with The Libertines on Saturday night, and the Pet Shop Boys are the main stage act on Friday night – a homecoming gig for North Shields-born lead vocalist Neil Tennant. Neil Tennant commented: “We are looking forward to bringing our futuristic show to a wonderful historic area in the North East.” Other confirmed artists playing over the weekend include Mark Ronson, Twin Atlantic, JP Cooper, MNEK, The Sherlocks, Calum Scott and North East rockers Maximo Park, with more acts to be announced. The new festival will take place across 350 acres of privately-owned farmland, where for three days and nights festival-goers will camp out and enjoy a variety of unrivalled moments of excitement, happiness, relaxation and community through music, dance, carnival, art and gastronomy. Festival on the Wall aims to be ‘the happiest festival in the UK’ by maintaining the quality enjoyed in everyday life and giving visitors every option possible for an enjoyable weekend, from really great food (and not having to wait too long in line to purchase it), to easy ways to charge your phone, straighten your hair, have a hot shower or camp in comfort with striking views. Live music will take place on a number of stages across the weekend, with The Thunderdome providing dance DJs and entertainment for late-night revellers in a Mad Max-esque area with a 360-degree, flaming stage and a central DJ booth shooting lightning bolts over the crowd. In addition to the live music, there’ll be a whole host of things to see and do, from roller disco in a field, Karavanoke, fine dining 100ft in the air with a bird’s eye view of the main stage, and even a hot tub chill-out zone. The experience will be fully immersive as it will embrace

10

virtual technologies, allowing festival-goers to view all music sets from the weekend in a unique VR zone. Camping will include everything from bringing your own tent to booking a pre-pitched tent, as well as options to stay in luxury yurts and sleep pods with views of the starry Northumberland skyline. Working for over two years to make it happen, festival founder and director Dale Mason from Northumberland, and business partner Richard Gillies, have lined up a skilled festivals team. Dale said: “Festival on the Wall is primarily a festival for the North East, created by the North East. I’ve thought for some time that this amazing region needs a music festival to be proud of and what better location than the stunning Northumberland countryside, just a few miles from our world-famous landmark Hadrian’s Wall? “When planning our line up for the first year we were keen to showcase talent which emerged here in the North East and are thrilled to have secured the likes of The Libertines and Pet Shop Boys, which we hope will excite people in the region as well as attract festival fans from further afield to visit Northumberland. “Our line up will have something for everyone, whatever their taste in music, and all will be revealed in full over the coming weeks and months – including our Sunday schedule which we are very excited about.” Additionally, up to £10 from each ticket sale will go to Unicef UK to help enable the world’s leading children’s organisation to continue their vital work ensuring children around the world can lead happy and healthy lives. Various camping options are available over the festival weekend, with early bird weekend camping tickets priced from £170, and discounted price points for teenagers and students. Children 12 and under are welcome accompanied by an adult for just £10. VIP packages are priced from £330 and luxury accommodation will also be available including yurts and tipis. Click and collect tents pitched ahead of arrival will soon be available too. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.festivalonthewall.com

NEW PAVILION OPENS AT BEDLINGTON PARK A new community pavilion has been opened at a popular park in Bedlington, as part of an ongoing programme of improvements. The new facility in Gallagher Park has been funded by Northumberland County Council along with a contribution from the Sports Lottery through Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund. The pavilion provides changing rooms for players and officials, a function room and kitchen, toilets (inside and outside), and a large store room for equipment. It will be available to use by the sports clubs that use Gallagher Park and will also be used by the Friends of Gallagher Park, and other community groups by arrangement. Current users of the pavilion include the Blyth and Wansbeck Sunday League senior footballers, Bedlington United Junior footballers and the Barnsbury Cycle Club, who train on the adjacent BMX track on a weekly basis. Councillor Ian Swithenbank, cabinet member for local services, said: “We think public health is very important. “We are investing in leisure facilities, park facilities and footpaths to encourage people to get out there, be fit and be healthy.” Ward Councillor Val Tyler is also cabinet member for

arts, leisure and culture at the council. She said: “The park is open twelve months of the year and it’s on the doorstep. “We now have this amazing facility in Gallagher Park which is available for all the community of Bedlington to use.” Bedlington Central Councillor Alyson Wallace added: “This is a great example of investment in the area. “The facility is great for the town, and especially for those who enjoy informal leisure.” The total cost of the development so far is £670,000, with the council investing £534,000 and Sport’s Lottery contributing £136,000 via Sport England. Further plans are also being draw up to enhance the park with improvements to the children’s play area and the development of new walking routes around the site later in the year.

FOCUS ON MORPETH

O

ver the last decade shopping habits have dramatically changed and, with the explosion of online shopping, town centres have had to evolve in order to ensure they remain an attractive alternative to the ease and comfort of shopping from home. Morpeth is certainly one of the local towns that have adapted to change and moved with the times, and the town centre has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Morpeth has always been a place to visit if you want a mix of stylish shopping and a rich history, and it’s willingness to move with the times has seen it continue to flourish, even in times of economic uncertainty. The town is awash with local independent businesses, national chains, acclaimed restaurants, popular coffee shops and stunning scenery. The town is well known as a fantastic shopping destination, with Bridge Street home to some major high street names, and the fantastic Rutherfords department store which has been trading in the town since 1846. This sumptuous premier lifestyle store has 35 different departments to transform and enhance every part of your home and life Newgate Street and Oldfield are the places to head to for unique independent retailers, here you will find an array of shops from The Sewing Box offering hundreds of fabrics and accessories to Tallantyre Gallery with exquisite home furnishings and art gallery. Sanderson Arcade was a very welcome addition to the town in 2009, playing host to both national and 20

independent stores, and the award winning Edwardian gallery and open air piazza is a great place to shop. But there is far more to Morpeth than shopping, and there is a good variety of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops catering to all needs. There are lots of great places to eat, whether it's a quick coffee, light lunch or more formal dining, Morpeth offers a wide range of places to eat from modern coffee shops and traditional tea rooms to contemporary bistros and atmospheric tapas bars. You can wander along woodland paths in the colourful Carlisle Park, which boasts river boating, tennis courts, bowling, play areas, picnic space, mini golf and much more. The park also plays host to the wonderful Turner Garden, celebrating the life of William Turner, the father of English botany who was born and educated in Morpeth. Once an issue for the town, free car parking was introduced in Council-run car parks in 2014. There are time controls on the car parks, some designated for up to three hours (with no return within four hours) and some designated as all day car parks. These time controls are managed with a simple parking disk system. Any standard clock-dial parking disks from anywhere in the country are valid for use. Disks are available at a cost of ÂŁ1 from the Library, the Town Hall (not County Hall) and a limited number of town shops displaying a poster. With easy parking, shops aplenty, a wonderful array of coffee shops and restaurants, and beautiful scenic walks, Morpeth really does have it all.

MORPETH MARKETS Morpeth has had a market in the town for almost as long as records go back. The town received its Market Charter from King John in 1199, and so celebrated the 800th anniversary of the market in 1999.

U

p until the 1950’s it was a major livestock market. Infact, at one stage, it was the largest livestock market in the North East, and the local Morpeth dialect still has a number of words deriving from Romany reflecting this history. Through the 1970’s and 1980’s, it became a very successful street market run by the local council. However, towards the end of the ‘80’s and in the early ‘90’s, it suffered from competition with private sector markets springing up in neighbouring towns. By the mid1990’s, it had dwindled to a dozen or so stalls ‘round the back of’ the bus station. In 1999, alongside the 800th anniversary celebration of the Market Charter, the local council launched a monthly farmers’ market in Morpeth. Several of the producers who started up businesses selling at the farmers’ market are now also regulars at the

22

Wednesday Charter Market, giving it a real local feel. In 2002-3, the Market Place in Morpeth was refurbished and expanded. Then, in 2005, the market was relocated onto the Market Place, bringing it back into the heart of the town. Alongside this, Castle Morpeth Borough Council invested in new stalls and equipment to relaunch the market in its new location. On Saturday Sept 6th 2008 Morpeth experienced the worst flood in over a hundred years, with more than a thousand homes and businesses evacuated. The farmers’ market on the Sunday was cancelled, but the Charter Market on the following Wednesday, just four days after the flood, went ahead as usual. Since 2009 the markets have been managed by Northumberland County Council. In 2013 the council agreed an innovative public-private partnership with the Sanderson Arcade for resourcing, developing and promoting the markets. The partnership provided new stalls branded with the ‘More in Morpeth’ logo, and commissioned the installation of stall anchor points on the Market Place. Since 2013, the Morpeth Food & Drink Festival has been held to

coincide with the October farmers' market on the first Saturday in October. Morpeth Charter Market is held every Wednesday from 9am till 4pm on Morpeth Market Place. There are typically 16-20 stalls and more through the summer. As well as traditional market stalls, several local producers have joined the weekly market from the monthly farmers’ market creating a special local identity Morpeth Farmers’ Markets are held on the Market Place on the first Saturday of each month running from 9am – 3pm. The next farmers' market in Saturday 1st April followed by Saturday 6th May. Although farmers’ markets are not restricted to farmers, traders must be local – and in Morpeth (up to 50 miles away), only sell their own produce, and must be involved in the actual production of what they are selling. Morpeth Market is managed by Northumberland County Council and Sanderson Arcade, working in partnership with Morpeth Town Council, Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and other local organisations through the Morpeth market working group.

ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS WITH YOUR DENTURE OR NEED A NEW ONE? Then can we introduce Alan Forrest, our Clinical Dental Technician If you are having problems with your denture it is best to visit your dentist or clinical dental technician who will be able to check your mouth is clean and healthy and ensure your denture fits properly. Sometimes dentures need to be adjusted or replaced.

COMMON PROBLEMS THAT DENTURES CAUSE: • Problems speaking and eating • Mouth ulcers and sores • Infection (thrush) caused by poor fitting dentures and poor denture cleanliness • Embarrassment from dentures moving

At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are very fortunate to offer a denture service provided by Alan Forrest, a Clinical Dental Technician. A clinical dental technician is a dental technician who has extended their training to gain an additional qualification which allows them to be part of a dental team as a clinician, working directly with the patient to provide and make dentures.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ALAN, A CLINICAL DENTAL TECHNICIAN, MAKING A DENTURE FOR YOU

Alan would be involved in every stage of making a denture for you; he would do the clinical part in the surgery that your dentist would normally do, however he would also make the denture for you too! Before Alan provides a denture, he would assess your facial

32

features and how you smile and talk. He would discuss your needs and requirements and keep you informed throughout all the stages of making your denture. Alan would be able to fulfil your wishes by providing you with a functional, naturally looking bespoke denture tailored to your needs. Alan’s motto is “arrive as a patient and leave as a friend.”

EXAMPLES OF THE SERVICES ALAN CAN OFFER: Complete upper and lower dentures

If you have no teeth remaining in the upper and/or lower jaw Alan can give you back your confidence with complete dentures: • Improving the clarity of your speech • Helping you to feel more secure about eating the foods you want • Supporting sagging facial muscles and sunken features that can make you appear older (especially around your mouth, lips and cheeks) • Removing the need for denture fixative

Partial dentures

If one or several of your teeth are missing, Alan can restore your smile with a Partial Denture. By replacing your missing teeth, he can give you back the look and function of a full set of healthy, natural teeth. (If you have any of your own natural teeth you must first be examined by a dentist to ensure these are healthy. We can arrange this for you if you do not have your own dentist). So, if you are having problems with your denture or would like a new one, with over 35 years of experience and skill, why not choose Alan? Contact Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402.

TOO SCARED TO GO TO THE DENTIST? We can help with Conscious Sedation Are you a nervous wreck when you have to go? Do you hate the sound, sight and smell of going to the dentist? Well, you are certainly not alone! From an adult dental survey1 just over a third of adults whom have ever been to the dentist have moderate anxiety, and a further 12 % have an extreme dental anxiety. This survey did not even include those of you that have never been to the dentist! It is not a surprise that being scared of the dentist is a huge barrier for some of you seeking dental care. However, not going to the dentist can have a huge impact on your oral health. Dental anxiety has been linked to feelings of low self esteem and found to have an effect on performance at work. It can also affect existing relationships as well as meeting new people2.

DO YOU WANT TO RECEIVE DENTAL CARE BUT FEEL TOO SCARED?

There are 2 types of conscious sedation offered at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice; inhalational or intravenous sedation. Inhalational sedation involves breathing oxygen and nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas or happy air) through a small mask just on your nose. You breathe the happy air in and out through your nose and it makes you feel more relaxed, calm and able to cope with the dental treatment. At the end of treatment you simply breathe the happy air out and you feel fully recovered after about 10 minutes. Intravenous sedation involves an injection either in the back of your hand or arm with a drug called midazolam. Generally midazolam creates a slightly greater level of sedation than nitrous oxide. It may also make you forget what has happened during the first part of your sedation appointment. The drug is in your system much longer than with happy air and therefore you need someone to look after you, and are not allowed to drive or go to work until the affects have worn off after 24 hours.

We can help you. At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice, our experienced team are used to helping frightened patients embark on their dental journey. You should never feel embarrassed about your dental fear or the state of your teeth: we absolutely understand and will never judge anyone who has the courage to reach out for dental help. We have learned to listen to our nervous patients and understand their concerns. We take it slowly until you are ready to accept dental treatment.

"BUT I'M TOO SCARED AND JUST WANT TO BE KNOCKED OUT."

You will not be fully knocked out or put to sleep, (a general anaesthetic) in a dental practice, however conscious sedation is a good alternative. The sedation team at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice is lead by Joanne Duggan the principal dentist whom has an additional qualification, a postgraduate diploma in conscious sedation in dentistry, from Newcastle University. Joanne is supported by dental nurse Ally, who also has an additional qualification in conscious sedation.

If you are scared of the dentist but know you need some dental help, then go on. You can do it. Pick up the phone! Contact us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402 to arrange a chat. The longer you delay, the harder it becomes.

WOULD YOU LIKE

STRAIGHT TEETH?

Did you once spend years undergoing orthodontic treatment and unsightly braces only to see your teeth slowly slip back to their former wonky ways? Are you one of many who are generally unhappy with the alignment of your teeth and longing for a beautiful, straight smile? At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are able to offer a range of orthodontic treatments for those of you who would like straight teeth, including Invisalign, Inman and Quick Straight Teeth. All these systems are cosmetic braces and not designed to correct more severe malaligned teeth, when ideally you should see a specialised orthodontist.

1

INVISALIGN® can give you the beautiful straight teeth you've always wanted. It works through a series of almost invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners or clear braces so no one can really tell you're wearing them. The Invisalign Process: • Invisalign uses digital 3-D technology to plan the movement of your teeth. • The position of your teeth at the beginning of treatment is recorded using a normal impression, from this we can create a digital image of your teeth as they are now. • Invisalign are then able to create your new smile on the computer and this animation shows the movement of your teeth from start to finish. • You are then able to comment on your finished result, making fine adjustments if required and when you are happy, and only when you are happy, the final invisible braces are made for you.

"How many aligners will I need?" This varies depending on the degree to which your teeth need to be moved. Typically you will wear each aligner for two weeks and then replace it with a new one. A typical treatment will require around 25 aligners, although this really does depend upon your individual case.

2

QUICK STRAIGHT TEETH is a great option for uneven front teeth. It won't correct major tooth misalignments or crooked back teeth.

One of the great advantages about this treatment is its simplicity. Your teeth are again assessed with computer technology and depending on your individual case you are provided with either clear aligners or a white fixed brace. These virtually invisible braces are an alternative to wearing regular metal braces. The average time you may need to wear the quick straight teeth brace is usually less than 6 months. Many people go through life with crooked teeth, wishing they had straighter teeth. Having a nice even smile boosts your confidence and self-esteem yet many people miss out on this opportunity. RECIPE

FRYING-PAN SPINACH SOUFFLÉ The word soufflé seems to strike fear into the hearts of even competent cooks, but this version is simple and accommodating. All you’re looking for is to get the eggs to rise slightly, then crisp a little on top, like a puffy omelette. You need a smallish frying pan which can go in the oven – 21–23cm in diameter. The two things to get right with any form of soufflé are to whisk your egg whites until you can tip the bowl over your head without them falling out (really!) and to fold them in gently to keep as much air in the mixture as possible.

SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS

300g spinach, washed, leaves stripped from their stalks * 4 eggs * ¼ tsp ground nutmeg * 1 good tsp wholegrain mustard * 75g grated Cheddar * Sunflower or light olive oil, for frying * Salt and pepper

METHOD

* Heat your oven to 210˚C/Gas 6. * Cook the spinach in a pan of boiling water for 1–2 minutes, until wilted. Drain and refresh in a bowl of cold water, then drain again. Wring it out with your hands to remove excess water, then roughly chop the leaves. * Separate the egg whites and yolks into 2 bowls. Whisk

the egg whites until they form firm but soft peaks – an electric whisk makes life easier. Lightly beat the egg yolks together. * Add the spinach to the yolks, then add the nutmeg, mustard and three quarters of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. * Take a spoonful of the egg white and stir it into the egg yolk mixture, then very gently fold in the rest. * Pour 1 tablespoon of oil into a 21–23cm frying pan. Wipe the base and sides with kitchen paper to coat it. Heat the oil gently, then tip in the egg mix and tip the pan from side to side to cover it. * Sprinkle over the remaining cheese. Transfer the pan to the oven for 10 minutes, until the mixture has risen and is fluffy and slightly golden from the melted cheese on top. * Cut in half or wedges to serve.

LOCAL TEAMS ARE A HATTRICK OF TALENT We all know that the North East is a hotbed of sport, especially football, and the area is home to some of the best amateur teams in the country. The fact that seven of the last eight FA Vase winners (The FA Cup for the lower leagues) have come from the reason is testament to that! Here in Northumberland, we have some of the most famous, and successful amateur clubs, and the region has been a production line of talent for decades. With ticket prices for Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough at an all-time high, why not stay closer to home and go along to watch one of our local teams. Here is a brief look at three of the top clubs in the area..

LOCAL SPORT

ASHINGTON A.F.C

Mention Ashington to any football follower, and the chances are they will have heard of the birthplace of World Cup winning brothers Bobby and Jackie Charlton. Jackie Milburn, a legend at Newcastle United also played for the town’s team, known unsurprisingly as the Colliers.

A

shington AFC was formed in 1883, making it one of the oldest Clubs in Northumberland. Despite its minor status it entered the FA Cup as early as 1887. In1921, the Colliers were elected to join the Football League Third Division North, with fellow North Eastern League sides Darlington, Durham City and Hartlepools United. In the same year Portland Park was upgraded from a typical Non-League venue to a stadium designed for 20,000. It had a re-laid pitch, new pavilion, tearoom and large press box added. The attendance at Portland Park was regularly over 10,000, and the Colliers remained amongst the Country’s elite until the 1928/29 season when a disastrous campaign saw the Colliers finish bottom and become one of the first clubs to miss out on re-election. A struggling team and the miner’s strike, hit the Colliers hard as crowds dropped dramatically to under 1,000 for the final few home games in the Football League.
After losing League status, the Colliers returned to the North Eastern League and after struggling with finances joined the Northern League in 1970.
Ashington were relegated to the Northern League Second Division in 1984/85. The worst period in the Club’s history followed and as Ashington struggled, the club hit

rock bottom in 1994 when they were unable to raise a team against Crook Town resulting in the whole committee resigning. A public meeting saw a new committee formed and to celebrate, a group of supporters launched the highly acclaimed fanzine ‘The Pit Pony Express’.
Success soon switched to the team, with the Colliers picking up a number of trophies over the next few years. On Friday 15th February 2008 Ashington played their final game at Portland Park against Seaham Red Star. A bumper crowd of 1,954 - the biggest attendance at a Northern League game in over 25 years saw Seaham spoil the party with a 3-2 win.
In the summer of 2008 a new executive board took control of the club led by National Union of Mineworkers President Ian Lavery. In early August 2008 the new ground Woodhorn Lane was opened and on Saturday 30th August 2008, Ashington played their first game at the new ground defeating UniBond League side Ossett Albion 2-1 in the FA Cup with a crowd of 341. Striker Gareth Bainbridge, scorer in the last match at Portland Park against Seaham Red Star, had the honour of being the first goal scorer at Woodhorn Lane.
A number of ex-Ashington players have gone on to make a name for themselves, not only nationally but internationally. Patrick O'Connell, an Irish international centre-half signed from Dumbarton during Ashington's Football League days went on to manage Real Betis, Sevilla and FC Barcelona! More recently, in 1981 Tony Lowery was sold to West Bromwich Albion. Another player Dave Walton joined Sheffield United before joining

The attendance at Portland Park was regularly over 10,000, and the Colliers remained amongst the Country’s elite until the 1928/29 season Crewe, Shrewsbury and Derby County. Another England International also emerged from the clubs ranks – at cricket. Steve Harmison, ranked as the World’s best fast bowler after demolishing the West Indies as he took 7 wickets for only 12 runs at Sabina Park, played central defence for Ashington until 1996 before giving up to concentrate on cricket. However, now retired from Cricket, ‘Harmy’ is back at the colliers, this time as manager and hoping to build a successful team over the coming few seasons.

MORPETH TOWN Morpeth Town Football Club was established in 1894, and through more than a century of football have continued the tradition of carrying Amber and Black as their team colours.

T

he club was formed after an amalgamation between Morpeth United and Morpeth FC, playing at Stobhill Cricket Field. In 1954 the club moved to Storey Park, and in the 1980’s enjoyed a successful time in the Northern Alliance, winning the title and finishing runners-up on two other occasions, as well as lifting both the Challenge Cup and Benevolent Bowl in 1986. The club spent half a century in the Northern Football Alliance before stepping up to the Northern League on their one hundredth anniversary, winning the Division Two title in their first season and finishing sixth in Division One and Northumberland Senior Cup runners-up in their second. In 1998-99 they made it to the final qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing 1-0 at home to Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion. The club moved to a purpose built stadium in 1994, which co-incided with a League and Cup double, and with it, promotion to the Northern League. Craik Park was named after the father and son W and R Craik who had served as secretary between 1920 and 1985. Current President 42

Ken Beattie was the man behind the stadium and since 1992 he has revived the club’s fortunes. Disaster struck in 2009/10 as Morpeth Town were relegated to the second division and things got even worse a season later as Morpeth Town finished bottom of the Northern League’s second tier. The club was in dire straits, with President Ken Beattie and Chairman Jim Smith trying their best to keep the club running by bringing the ground up to Northern League standards whilst being forced to ground share with local rivals Bedlington Terriers. The club was within weeks of folding at one point. The Highwaymen began their revival in 2011/12 under the stewardship of Nick Gray who moved to the club from Seaton Delaval and brought a number of players. In his first season Morpeth narrowly avoided promotion back to the top tier, finishing fourth and a one point won fourteen consecutive home games. They have since gone from strength to strength, culminating in their famous FA Vase triumph last season.

The club moved to a purpose built stadium in 1994, which co-incided with a League and Cup double, and with it, promotion to the Northern League.

LOCAL SPORT

BEDLINGTON TERRIERS Football teams have been around in Bedlington since the early 1900`s. The present club was formed in 1949 under the name of Bedlington Mechanics, joining the Northern Combination league.

T

he first honour for the new era was the Northumberland Minor Cup in season 1953/54, and they followed this up with their only Northern Combination title in 1954/55. During these years they changed their name from Mechanics to Colliery Town and then as Bedlington Colliery Welfare, joining the Northern Alliance League in 1955/56. At the end of the 1970/71 season the Terriers had to leave the Northern Alliance and played in a number of minor local leagues until 1979/80. They joined the Tyneside Amateur League under the name of Bedlington United and in 1980/81 were readmitted to the Northern Alliance League. They won their fourth Northern Alliance League Cup in 1981/82 and, in the next season, were elected as founder members of the Northern League Second Division, winning promotion to the First Division in 1984/85 as runners-up. They finished runners-up in their first year, but were soon relegated in the next. Then followed a period of ups and downs and, early in 1993, the club faced the real prospect of going out of business, bottom of the division and having their fixtures suspended for a month. Bedlington stalwart Billy Ward, with almost 40 years at the helm,

approached local businessmen, Dave and Keith Perry, and asked them to mount a rescue operation. Their fortunes gradually turned around, and the 1998/99 was Bedlingtons 50th year since the club was formed, and what a season it was! It started by winning the Cleator Cup, and continued with a march to the second round proper of the F.A. Cup, after defeating Colchester United of the Football League Division two 4 -1 in round one before finally falling away at Scunthorpe. The league title capped a wonderful season, as they won it with ease, by 26 points, scoring 128 goals in the process and amassing 101 points. The other story of the season was the march of the Terriers to Wembley Stadium for the final of the F.A. Carlsberg Vase, a day in the clubs history never to be forgotten. The Terriers took on Tiverton Town in the F.A. Vase final, only to succumb to a last minute defeat, but with an open top bus ride to follow, on their return, 1998/99 was definitely the year that the Terriers put themselves firmly on the footballing map. The coming seasons saw the success continue with five consecutive Northern League titles, a League Cup and two Northumberland Senior Cup wins.

They won their fourth Northern Alliance League Cup in 1981/82 and, in the next season, were elected as founder members of the Northern League Second Division They have again suffered a few ups and downs since this purple patch, including the well publicised 2010 sponsorship by Robert Rich, a wealthy American tycoon who had discovered ancestral roots in the town. However this association, along with The Terriers stay in Division 1 ended last season. Now under the chairmanship of local businessman Ronan Liddane, a former player at Blyth Spartans and Blue Star and manager at Crook Town, despite a poor start to this season, the team have picked up some good results recently and are looking to finish the season strongly.

NEW SPORTS FACILITY OPENS IN ASHINGTON A new £560,000 community changing facility and fitness suite was officially opened in Ashington last month. The modern facility comprises changing rooms, showers and toilets and an adjacent fitness room containing a range of running machines, gym equipment and weights. It has been built in the grounds of Ashington High School which is situated next to the popular Peoples Park. The changing facility will be used by pupils attending the school during the daytime and will be available for use by community groups in the evenings and weekends, including local Sunday league football teams, that use the park. Northumberland County Council contributed £460,000 to the scheme with Ashington Leisure Partnership, a charitable trust that develops sports initiatives for the young people in the town, contributing £100,000. Gary Douglas, Principal at Ashington High School said:“ This development has greatly improved the PE and sports facilities for the students at our school and we are delighted that the local community will

46

also benefit. Our thanks go to the Ashington Leisure Partnership and Northumberland County Council for their support of this project. ” Colin Redpath is vice-chair of the Ashington Leisure Partnership. He said: “I am delighted that we have been able to award a grant to enable this much needed community facility to be built.” The project has been delivered by a partnership between Northumberland County Council, Ashington Leisure Partnership and Ashington High School. The school will be managing and maintaining the facilities on behalf of the partnership.

HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN

In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care. 48

What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.

What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.

For more information, please contact Eothen’s Head Office on 0191 281 9100 or email enquiries@eothenhomes.org.uk

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 52

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR AHEAD FOR CHOIR 2016 was an exceptional year for Ashington & District Male Voice Choir when members celebrated its Centenary. There was an extensive programme of events which included a number of new ventures and this was helped by a growth in the membership and a huge improvement in the choir’s performance at the concerts. This success is now helping the choir continue in its development with repeat invitations being received to perform and new venues appearing in the diary. The next scheduled concert is in St. Lawrence’s Church Warkworth, a first visit for the choir. This is a memorial celebration on Friday 28th April at 7-00pm and the choir will have some special guests. The ladies of the ‘Pipers Fancy’ with their Northumbrian Pipes. This will be followed on Saturday 13th May with the choir’s own Annual Concert in Holy Sepulchre Church Ashington at 7-0pm. The choir’s guest artist will be a return visit of Newbiggin’s much loved Susan Robertson who featured so prominently in the Lord Mayor of London’s New Year’s Day Celebration Parade. Later the gentlemen will be gearing up for a return visit to Alnwick Gardens to perform at the Lord Lieutenant’s (the Duchess of Northumberland) Garden Party and another day performing in the Pit

PARLEZ - VOUS FRANÇAIS? If you fancy learning a new language, Barbara from Lingua Forme is on hand to help. By Margery Wilson

D

o you set off on holiday to sunnier climes hoping that the hotel staff, waiters, shop assistants, bar staff, etc. all speak English? I always promise myself that I'll learn a few words, even if it's just 'please' and 'thank you', but I never seem to get round to it (and anyway I'm too old to go back to school I tell myself!) Yes, I'm one of the vast army of tourists who use the excuses 'learning a language is too hard; learning a language will take too long; everyone speaks English don't they' to justify my lack of positive action! Learning a new language can be a very fulfilling experience, whether it is something you want to do as a family, are a regular traveller looking to increase your language range, a mature couple retiring abroad, or if you are simply keen to learn. Another myth is that everyone speaks English - I had a comical experience whilst on holiday abroad trying to buy an ankle support in a pharmacy. Believe me, there is only so much you can indicate with hand gestures!! If you like to visit destinations which are somewhat off the beaten track, you may discover few or no English speakers. With this in mind, let us introduce you to Barbara, owner of Lingua Forme, a French conversation classes for Adults business. Barbara is a fully qualified teacher of French with has several years' experience. She has lived and taught in France, in Metz situated in the beautiful Lorraine region. There are about 220 million French-speakers world-wide, so French really can be a 'Lingua Franca'. If you were taught French at school, you may remember it as a less than enjoyable time, sitting in rows chanting phrases and declining verbs on end. If you have been away from school for a number of years you may feel embarrassed to be back in a learning situation and unwilling to take the first step.

62

It can take a lot of courage to go through the door for the first time but the effort will be well worth while. For these reasons, let her explain how she runs her sessions. "We sit round a table in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and share knowledge, chat and exchange news. Learning is not confined to any one method but encompasses books, handouts, videos and CD's. We also play games and learn in a supportive atmosphere where NO question is a stupid question (often the question YOU ask is what other people wanted to know but couldn't pluck up the courage to ask.) So, all you need to become a proficient French speaker is dedication, hard work and a willingness to learn (and with a lot of laughs sprinkled through the sessions)" Barbara also runs extra classes for A level, GCSE and one-to-one tuition, just call her to discuss availability and times. Barbara is presently running classes in Seaton Sluice,Whitley Bay and Morpeth, covering all levels from beginners to advanced, so please get in touch if you are interested. At the classes you watch videos, listen to CDs and play games, all aimed at making learning fun. The classes are all aimed at putting you at ease and making you want to learn. At Linga Forma no question is a stupid question - it really is a great environment to learn the language. So, why not impress your friends, family and the hotel and restaurant staff on your next visit to the country, and learn a new language – it is never too late to learn French! For more information contact Barbara on: 07946 115 256 or barbara@linguaforme.co.uk www.linguaforme.co.uk
